Lady Gaga Goes to Harvard

Posted on March 01, 2012

Steffi takes a snow day.

Lady Gaga stops by Harvard Yard before launching her “Born This Way” Foundation in a Prabal Gurung coat and Sally LaPointe dress.

Sally LaPointe Fall 2012 Collection

Prabal Gurung Fall 2012 Collection

That’s one way to keep the snow out of your eyes.

We joke because we love. She looks amazing. Love the coat, love the dress, love the headwear, love the shades. Love pretty much every single thing about this look. It’s chic and relatively subdued, but still totally Gaga. She tried her best to keep those sleeves pushed up – and we wish she could have, because it changed the look just enough to make it her own – but obvously the sleeves had ideas of their own. It’s nice to see she doesn’t have control over everything and even Lady Gaga sometimes can’t get her clothes to do what she wants them to.

Hello, Ginger. We see you there.

She looks nice in an Mob Wife widow meets Martian sort of way. Love the gloves actually.

  • Jessica Rowe

Oh, he is hot.  I love that coat.  Hate those shades, sorry.

    • kingderella

hes totally ‘frank’ from revenge, isnt he?

  • Pupioso

the shades look great and only because they are on Gaga. Love the dress.

  • MissAnnieRN

I like this.  And that surprises me.  I mean I wouldn’t wear it, but it works.

  • SapphoPoet

I LOVE this coat–those sleeves are beautiful. She does look amazing.

(I always wonder, though, what she’d look like in just a regular pair of jeans, sneakers, and a tshirt.)

  • CharCrop

    Awesome sleeves on the coat.

  • Laura Wisneski

kind of an updated Peggy Guggenheim look.  like it.

  • schadenfreudelicious

it shouldn’t really work yet somehow does, happy to see HGH back in the picture 🙂

  • Have you guys seen her Terry Richardson Book? There is a photo of Gaga and Hot Ginger Body Guard. I believe she is giving him a birthday cake back stages. It’s totally adorable.

  • Little Miss Attention Whore does it again!

  • Shows what a horrendous mess Phi Phi’s impersonation was.

  • serenitynow02

Look at Ginger Handler all dressed up!

Whoever else might be thinking of wearing this coat had better just throw in the towel.

  • FashionShowAtLunch

She looks amazing.  And I am so thrilled she’s wearing a skirt, rather than the jacket and some hot pants. I suppose we have this Boston weather to thank for that.

    • FashionShowAtLunch

As well as the fact that she’s going to Harvard.

  • Judy_J

That is one gorgeous coat.  She does look amazing.  Very well put together.

  • sarahofalessergod

She looks pretty great, I have to say.

  • BeeBeauNYC

Hot Ginger Handler is looking good! I missed him, actually. Oh, and I agree – Steffi looks great!

    •  me too, BeeBeau, I have missed getting fleeting glimpses of the Ginger hotness.

      • I wonder if he realized that he has his own following?
I just googled to see if anyone else on the internet has taken an interest in him, and found this guy that claims he was assaulted by him!
No one else seems to appreciate his ginger hotness!

        •  Interesting. Though I would doubt that its true that he assaulted someone.  You don’t get to be a handler at that level if you can’t hold your temper in check mighty well.

  • Mefein

I can’t help but think that coat looks so much sharper over legs than a long skirt, and it could have been paired with some pretty great shoes or boots.  The long black gown also just seems kind of silly and a bit much for daytime, and not in the usual Gaga way.

    • Yeah, I agree. The skirt, even though it’s rather light, is too much with the coat. Cigarette pants and boot would be better.

Love that crazy hat though. And she’s wearing the hell out of the coat.

  • She looks totally awesome, in a “not from around here” kinda way.  Loving on her today, for this.

  • That coat is amazing – the sleeves look like gasoline puddles (or is that just me?).

    • Call me Bee

No not just you.  They have that luminous look of oil or gas on water.  Love it.

  • guestela

    LOVE the coat.

  • From the thumbnail, she looked like Dame Edna.
But with the whole look, she is pretty fab. And the picture makes me wish it was snowing here in TX.

  • She looks amazing!  And I love playing Spot the Ginger 🙂

    • I’m sure he’s always professional, but to me it looks like HGH is checking out Ms. Gaga’s, ehem, assets, in the last picture.

  • Laylalola

I think she’ll cringe in 10, 20 years at her fashion today, very much like we do now when we think of those trendsetters a Flock of Seagulls.

    • charlotte

Or she’ll keep dressing that way and the people will cringe.

    • GorgeousThings

Or she’ll evolve and adapt and look back fondly on her early days.

      • formerlyAnon

Don’t you just hope so? She started this game so very young and she does seem to be on an arc, though too soon to tell. I must be getting ancient, I sometimes just ache for young celebrities to mature gracefully and to avoid the whole VH1 crash-and-burn bio roller coaster.

    • Elaine Lang

In 5 years she may cringe, in 10 years she’ll laugh, and in 20 it will all be new again.

    • Anathema_Device

I don’t think she’ll ever cringe. Every outfit is so calculated, and it isn’t like she is reacting to the times but rather fashion is reacting to her. She is creating a character every time she steps out the door. I’m not even a fan and didn’t find her past looks all that interesting b/c it was obviously theater and much of it had been done decades earlier. But I do like her more recent looks.

    • SteveKl

I actually have never stopped liking Flock of Seagull couture, and I wish I still had hair.

  • brora

Do you think she pays for those clothes?

I am only asking because I am interested, not trying to make some political or moral point.

    •  Very likely she doesn’t.  What desinger on Earth wouldn’t jump at the chance to see their stuff photographed on Lady Gaga?  Instant world access.

      • I believe you’re right, but I’ve always wondered about that. I mean, how many people can actually afford those clothes? And it seems to me that the people who can afford them, and would wear them, probably already know about them.

Just speculating, of course. Why and how people buy and sell things has always been a mystery to me.

  • Scarlet39

I love this!  I so want that coat!

  • nannypoo

I love this. And the little see-through gloves are adorable.

    • formerlyAnon

You just know Madonna is cheering every time she sees another prominent celeb wearing gloves.

  • I can’t help but create a narrative from juxtaposition of those last two photos in which LG happily palms someone’s camera and pockets it, cackling in delight.

  • I love the shape of the coat, that’s about it.  The coat would have been just as interesting without that crazy shit on the sleeves and back. Even on the runway it looks like something was pinned on top of the coat as if to say “THERE, NOW it’s interesting”.

  • But who made the hat?  It’s fabulous!

    •  Looks mighty like something Phillip Treacy would do, though I’m not certain.

  • halleygee

I’m kind of neutral on this, but those glasses make her look like she’s wearing a fake nose.

    • kimmeister

Yes, my thoughts exactly!  Looks like those noses attached to gag glasses.

  • funkypeanut

Want want want that coat. The glasses are interesting, but I don’t think that they flatter her facial shape. I wish that we could see the shoes.

  • Call me Bee

Surprizingly low-key for Miss Gaga, I think.  It’s a fabulous outfit and totally appropriate for aa foundation-lunching.
I heard there were some protestors there angry about…I don’t know.  I wonder….

    • Leslie Kim

it was a protest for harvard to give degrees to people who’d been expelled (and some who committed suicide) in the 1920s during a witch hunt because they were perceived as gay.  they weren’t angry about gaga (i think).

      • Terence Ng

In fact, I think they chose that day specifically because of the coinciding issues.

  • snarkykitten

if nothing else, she always seem to be genuinely enjoying her life, which is refreshing. She looks somehow approachable, despite all the kooky fashion. Unlike, say, Mrs Beckham who always looks like she’s just eaten a shit sandwich.

    • kimmeister

She was just in my neck of the woods last weekend (Sonoma County), and everyone said she was dressed pretty normally (other than the 6″ stilettos) and was quite sweet.

  • cclaussen3

The day she’s scheduled to come to Harvard, that’s when winter decides to kick back in. We’ve had the craziest mild winter here in the Boston area. The amount of snowfall is actually quite beautiful against the black outfit and car. The quintessential conservative Gaga look.

  • GorgeousThings

Love it, and she was quite the hit at Harvard. Luv huh.

  • Anathema_Device

This might be my favorite outfit of hers ever.

  • TheOriginalLulu

    Love it. She looks amazing.
Her head adornments always crack me up, but she wouldn’t be Gaga without them.

  • Ozski

I live right up the street from Harvard U and the weather was crap yesterday. I’m just happy to see she wasn’t pantsless.

  • Love everything about her.  Can’t wait to see what she has on.  “Ginger”.  tee hee.  And just think, in real life, he’s probably a machine!  trained to act instinctively against threats, with a rock hard, sinewy body!

  • Cathy S

I love everything except the sunglasses. That coat’s amazing.

  • Gorgeous. I love the direction she’s been going – crazy in a beautiful way, instead of crazy in a WTF-is-that-a-meat-dress way.

  • Jecca2244

She was super sweet to everyone….stopped to talk with a lot of people. that is always appreciated.

  • HengRu

So good to see you again, Edith Prickley!

    •  OMG. Love that reference.  Perhaps we can get la Gaga to do an all leopard outfit.

  • I’d kill for that coat.

  • Peri7473

Don’t you wonder how long she takes to get dressed in the morning?  And how far in advance does she plan her outfits?  And how much of her day is spent just thinking about them?  Anyone know of an interview where she talks about this?

    • Diane_G

She’s done hundreds of interviews, I’m sure it could be found somewhere. There’s a huge, hour-long interview she did a while back with Google found here:
She starts talking about her style at 17 minute mark, but it doesn’t say how long she takes to get dressed. Hope that helped!

  • I love the whole thing, particularly the coat and the hat! Beautiful!

  • She looks fabulous – want that coat so badly.

  • k op

Such a great outfit!  Perfect (in a Gaga way) for the occasion.

How does she manage to make these runway clothes her own?  It takes a certain kind of genius to transform runway into everyday – but them on a normal body and make it work.  I couldn’t do it in a million years.

  • unbornfawn

Doesn’t the model wearing the coat look like a Barbie doll? Love the look. Want the coat!

  • mjude

  • Stubenville

Does the headgear pick up FM extraterrestrial radio?

  • granddelusion

The hat! Who made the hat?

  • She looks fantastic.  I love the coat and the hat.

  • tinyredlocks

    Want coat. Want coat bad…

  • Hey it’s Edie Sedgewick! (who went the Radclife btw)

  • I think on her the skirt (of the dress we can’t see) looks sack like? It moves beautifully on the runway. Maybe she’s too short. I would have liked a more nipped in skirt vs. a straight to the floor look. But the coat is fabulous.

  • PeaceBang

Oh my, so fabulous. I don’t like the shades or the red lippy but everything else is divoon. I am apparently not the only person here who would commit a heinous crime for that coat. And I wish we could see the dress underneath ’cause that looks likes Gaga perfection. Also, Go Crimson! Ra Ra Ra! HDS ’97!

  • Very well done, weird but quite elegant!

  • Pants_are_a_must

    That coat is fab.

  • Julian Betkowski

I wish she was as smart with her music as she is with her clothes. Her songs don’t have half the wit of her outfits.

    • Diane_G

I agree, sadly..and she’s a very intelligent person. She needs to catch her lyrics up with her intellect, instead of recording a song that took five minutes for her to write.

  • DinaSews

    Love, love, love that coat.

  • The glasses make her look like Tori Spelling

  • Joyce VG

    The coat is glorious!

  • MilaXX

Love the dress, love the coat and of course love the hot Ginger.

  • I adore it. She looks amazing.

  • Anna James

I adore the hat but I am the only one who thinks those sunglasses make her nose look like a fake nose attached to the glasses? I genuinely thought it was a fake nose when I saw the first photo.

  • Anna James

I adore the hat but I am the only one who thinks those sunglasses make her nose look like a fake nose attached to the glasses? I genuinely thought it was a fake nose when I saw the first photo.

  • Caroline Harper

it may be just me, but i secretly wish gaga and ginger handler are having a secret, torrid love affair a la the late whitney houston and kevin costner in the bodyguard.

    • formerlyAnon

Whereas I always imagine he’s married to an ordinary person much prettier than Gaga (if it’s a she) and the marriage is rather precarious because of his ridiculous travel schedule.

Not, I suppose, incompatible with your scenario!

  • formerlyAnon

Great ensemble. Especially the coat, hat & handler.

Not in love with the shades, but they keep the Gaga going.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I LOVE that coat – gorgeous!  Also the headpiece.  Fabulous!  Wish we could see what boots/shoes she was wearing.

  • amywinns

Dynamite AND weather- and venue-appropriate! Well done.

  • jannanna

wonder if she and Rhianna had a cat fight over the kitten glasses Rhianna wore yesterday.  I thought those would be much better suited to Gaga, and darn if they wouldn’t have gone nicely with this little getup.

    • TheOtherChristina

My thought precisely! I think the glasses are the only weak link here. RiRi’s shades would have been perfect in their place.

  • greyhoundgirl

Tuesday eve–girlfriend and I having dinner at restaurant upstairs in Charles Hotel.  Leaving through lobby.  I notice a luggage cart piled with suitcases and a big trunk.  I looked to see who it could belong to–it was a LOT of luggage.  She was standing next to it–casual, no entourage, though I’m sure they were there.  White coat nipped in at the waist, legs in dark stockings, black stiletto heels.  Hair in a long blonde swish.  Lovely. I was going fast but I noticed her because, though she looked more “regular” than she usually looks, she was very dressed up for laid back Cambridge.  It wasn’t until I went out the door that it hit me–it really was her.  I kicked myself for not saying something–her foundation is wonderful and I want to apply for a job there.  I would have thanked her for her work for lgbtq kids, especially.

  • CMS

I love the hat – a spirograph come to life!

  • That is a pretty amazing piece of headgear.  I like.

  • See, now that is how you wear a peplum! The whole look is just so cohesive and perfect.

  • Lisa

It’s a beautiful look!  Very chic, streamlined, and yet still very Gaga.

  • quiltrx

She looks fantastic!  And I would cut SEVERAL bitches for that fabulous coat!

  • PhillipWilde

I like the idea of the glasses, but the effect is something like the Groucho glasses.  Overall, she looks amazing.

  • bitterk

I’m thrilled she donated her old wardrobe to Nicki Minaj.  I love this Gaga so much better.   I just pray the meat suit has been given to the hungry.

  • ElitheMonkey

AHHH!!! I was there that day, how could I have missed Lady Gaga?!?!?!

  • Amazing. Pure love for this woman.
