In or Out: Zoe Saldana in Alexis Mabille Couture

Posted on March 16, 2012

We’re always falling all over Zoe with praise, but we’re aware not every Precious Unborn Fawn in our readership agrees with us.

Zoe Saldana attends “25 Most Powerful Stylists” Luncheon in an Alexis Mabille Couture dress paired with clutch and shoes by Jimmy Choo.

Alexis Mabille Spring 2012 Couture Collection

Jimmy Choo Jasmine Hand-Painted Python Clutch

Jimmy Choo Cosmic Patent Platform Pump

God, can you imagine what a hellish bitchfest the “25 Most Powerful Stylists” luncheon must be?

As for this look, we like the dress, but that’s about it. We’re disappointed in her. That bag is way too much for the look and the shoes don’t do anything for it. A pair of sandals would have looked sassier and a bag color from the opposite side of the color wheel would have looked sharper. We’re calling this one an OUT but you kittens have been known to surprise us.

Vote Now!

IN! Shut up, nitpicky bitches! She looks fabulous!

OUT! That shit looks thrown together. Tsk.

Almost every PUF agreed that Lucy Liu is far too fabulous for that oil slick dress she wore, voting the look OUT.

  • JasmineAM

    I really hate those shoes.

    • And the bag… count this as an OUT

  • sarahofalessergod

Fabulous dress, fabulous bag.  Unfortunately, the types of fabulous-ness of each item clashes when combined.  Still giving it an IN.

    • Derek_anny

I like atonal music, so I guess the fact that I think the clashing is another type of fabulous shouldn’t come as a surprise.

  • Anathema_Device

How weird that she would fall flat at a stylist luncheon (and WTF? A stylists celebration? Really?).

I can’t give this an Out, but I don’t feel it is an In either. I like the dress on her, and she is radiant, as always. But it is kind of meh to me.

    • Oh hunny, they have full on red carpet launches for calendars and sunglasses.  This should not be shocking in the least.

      • Anathema_Device

You’re absolutely right, of course. I should know better. These events just seem to get sillier and sillier.

      • And ice cream commercials. Remember that one?

      • Yes, and may I refer you to that time the “A List” bitchy bunch threw a “wig” party and a “t-shirt with my face on it” launch and a “tanning lotion” PERFORMANCE…

(FYI I’m not proud of myself for remembering all this)

  • Sara__B

I expect more from Zoe. She looks great in that busy little dress, but her styling (especially that draggly hair style she’s been wearing lately) is wrong. OUT.

    • ampg

This exactly.  It looks like she just woke up from a nap and grabbed the wrong purse and shoes by mistake.  Shame, because she really does make that dress work.  OUT.

  • Out, I kind of hate it all

  • MilaXX

Small IN Overall I like this, but I wish she had gone for a blue shoe instead. I don’t mind the bag and hair/makeup are good.

    • I say In as well, love the dress, not all that crazy about those shoes.  The hair needs work and I didn’t notice the bag so I feel like it blends in with the dress rather than fights it.  I reiterate, this is an In.

  • Hold please, I’m still getting over the fact that the model’s face has been spray painted RED.

Ok, I’m back. Zoe just made a dress out of her grandmother’s vintage table cloth.  OUT.

  • lrhoff

I agree with you boys.  Given the event, especially!

  • piecesofconfetti

IN. It’s not her best, but not a total loss.

  • maggiemaybe

I think she looks great but that clutch is kind of fighting with that dress. There’s a little too much going on with both to make them a good match, y’know? The shoes are fine by me.

  • serenitynow02

Out. She’s wearing a Victorian tablecloth with a weird boudoir lamp flounce at the bottom. And she’s carrying a bag I would hate with or without the outfit.

    • Pennymac

X2. That is my exact comment as well.

  • I love all the elements here, but just not together.
    That dress is fabulous, though.
I can’t decide if it’s an In or an Out. I’ll just go with ehhhhhhhh

  • Stefanos Mantyla

IN. I love the dress and the clutch separately, and do not mind them together. Zoe looks radiant, giving that “I am happy with what I am wearing” glow. I don’t get what you are going on about!

  • Beardslee

I’ll give her an IN because that dress is great and looks great on her so I’ll overlook that dumb clutch and the shoes that go with it.

  • AlexisPayne

She get’s graded at a higher level then most because she generally displays a sharp sense of style. Love the dress and that’s all, out.

  • Cathy S

I agree. I like the dress, but nothing else. Hard to give her an out though, but okay. Out.

  • Yeah, she could’ve accessorized better…but the dress is so amazing that it’s an IN anyway! (Plus she is just too cool to criticize.)

  • Zi Jie Tan

Out. Switch out the accessories, then we’ll talk.

  • golden_valley

I’m so glad she isn’t wearing that red thing on her head…but that whole get up is an OUT.

    • That red thing made me laugh out loud. When I imagined Zoe wearing it, I laughed even harder.

    • That red thing made me laugh out loud. When I imagined Zoe wearing it, I laughed even harder.

  • If she had painted her face orange and put that big…THING on her head, maybe I would’ve forgiven the ugly shoes. OUT

  • karena10

Out.  I’m not wild about the dress, but if it was styled differently, it could be part of an IN look.  The bag and the dress are horrible together and just clash.

  • AC

Like the dress, like the bag, like the shoes, but I can’t deal with any of them being paired together. OUT

  • Jill_3

You picky bitches. This is totally an IN.

(though there are issues with the styling)

    • kirkyo

Agreed. She looks amazing, poor clutch choice or not.

  • TheOriginalLulu

I’m just glad she didn’t wear the red laundry bag on her head.

  • newleaf1

No.  And give her a sandwich, she’s really looking peaked.

  • DeborahLipp

    I am disappoint.

  • Out. Not liking anything here. I’m not crazy about that dress on her, the bag is pretty fugly, and if I never see another pair of nude heels or platforms again in this life, I will be one happy kilt wearing faggyman.

  • IN. I like it all together, though I am not that crazy about the individual bits. I like the clash of bag and dress, with the simple shoe.

  • Out. That bag is a disaster with this dress, and the belt and shoes are wrong too.

  • siriuslover

I didn’t mind anything except the bag. Even the shoes aren’t THAT bad. But that bag. Up against that dress, all I could say was “my eyes! my eyes!”

  • howdoilook

IN. But she should’ve gone with the hat.

  • Pants_are_a_must

So very badly accessorized, and it ruins the whole look. OUT.

  • hmariec19

I gotta give this an IN. Love that dress.

  • MzzPants

OUT.  Has she been in a slump lately?  She usually knocks it out of the park, but this is the second photo you’ve posted where she looks less than fab.

  • LeBarron

I’m on the fence, but I love her and that dress, so I’ll give her a nudge to the IN side.  I’m not crazy about the shoes either, but they don’t ruin it for me.  That bag, though, has GOT. TO. GO.

  • TheDivineMissAnn

I’d like the dress better if the lining extended all the way to the bottom of the dress and that fringe (is that tulle?) wasn’t on the bottom of the dress.  The shoes she has on look like a more copper color than the putty color in the pic showing the shoes only.  I like the copper color better.  The purse is fab but not with that dress.

  • IN.

  • carolynmo

Yikes, out! The bottom of the dress is the big problem for me. And the shoes. Ok, maybe the whole thing.

  • annamiklo

She looks pretty fabulous to me.  There’s nothing about the outfit that looks wrong here.  Love the belt with the dress.  IN.

  • sagecreek

The dress is in, that clutch is tragic.

I’m going to lean IN, simply because I’ve been mean to her in the past.

  • Agree about the bag and shoes, but I lovelovelove Zoe Saldana too much to call this “out”. She is worship-worthy. ~worship~

  • hape_dex

Don’t care about her clothes, I can’t stop looking at her skinny arms, they look like twigs. She should gain at least ten kilos, when will women realize that most men like women with a little bit more meat on their bodies, the bag of bones look is OUT! She’s such a beautiful woman when she’s not looking like she’s starving.

  • VioletFem

IN, despite the shoes. That dress looks really good on her.

  • DinaSews

OUT.  HAHAHA.  Who exactly votes for the 25 stylists?  As we’ve seen, just because they are styling big celebrities doesn’t mean they are any good.  Can we have a red carpet critique on the stylists themselves?  That would be fun. Just thinking about 25 stylists thinking they are powerful makes me laugh.

  • Scott Isaacs

In. She looks so summery. I would love to go shopping (outdoors, of course) with her. Yes, the shoes are a big mistake, but I’m not concerned about the bag. The whole is greater than the sum of each part here.

  • I wonder/worry that she is so thin. I think she would great with a few more lbs, but some women are naturally thin.

  • I am assuming (this outfit notwithstanding) that her stylist is one of the 25 honorees?

Anyway, I agree that the accessories aren’t the best, but in no way does she look close to bad. IN.

  • not a high point for her personally, but compared to some of the other stars ive seen lately, she’s still miles ahead even when she’s off. IN.

  • Sophie Collier

IN.  Even if you prefer bags to be complimentary-colored from the outfit, this one still works.  I agree sandals would have looked better, but the bronzish pumps work just fine.  Definitely an IN.

  • DCSheehan

Out. There’s an arrow pointing to her hoo-hoo. And did they hand paint that bag in the dark? Also extra points off for not wearing the hat.

  • EEKstl

OUT.  She looks a bit of a mess, I’m afraid.  Hate the dress and while I LOVE the purse she should have saved it for a starker, simpler outfit where the purse could have been more of a star.  Hate the hair and shoes too.  And darling, PLEASE eat something.

  • Candigirl1968

Don’t mind the shoes… if they didn’t match the belt.  I also don’t love whatever is going on with the undersheath, drapery fringe bit at the bottom of the dress – it’s too busy.  Jimmy Choo probably threw the bag in with the shoes, like an investment banker trying to sell you on a bad stock they otherwise can’t move.

  • She’s wearing gold shoes, to match the gold belt and trim on the purse.  The purse is God-awful.  Why would you get that pattern anywhere near that dress???? I like the dress, but not the rest.  Out.

  • I like the bag in shoes.  I think the bag looks like it goes with the dress without being matchy, and the Southwestern gila-skin feel of it goes with the Day of the Dead cutout-flag vibe of the dress.  The shoes don’t offend.  IN.

  • bag *and* shoes

  • kcarb1025

And god, her face looks awful.

  • I always forget what PUF stands for and think it’s some sort of derogatory term!

    • Precious Unborn Fawns. From the finale show of the first season of Work of Art, when that one girl showed a picture she had done of taxidermied animals. It was super weird, and spawned the term here for fans of TLo.

  • I love the dress…but styling it so badly for an event that’s all about stylists is what tipped it into OUT territory for me.

    • AthenaJ

I know, really… how ironic that she was styled so badly for a stylists luncheon?!

Poor girl has been looking tired and thinner lately, and I think that’s been translating into some off the mark looks. I just want to give her a comfy pair of sweats and a pint of Ben & Jerry’s and tell her to just chill at home for a day.

  • You’re crazy. IN.

  • BazoDee

  • samitee

Don’t care for the shoes but otherwise this is Fabulous with a capital F. IN.

  • FayeKat

Fabulous dress +really awful bag +the wrong shoes = OUT

  • greatscoutm

She is gorgeous and fabulous but OUT.  Like everything on its own, but hate the assembly here.  Also not digging the contextual vibe–a stylists luncheon? Please, that is code for BRING IT.  And that lobby area just looks mall-ish and tacky.  So, no.

  • In.  i love the dress and he hair and makeup look lovely.  the purse is…you know, alright.  shoes, fug.  but she looks lovely and radiant.

  • fungstyle

by the way she’s holding it, she was given that bag but hates it. so she picked a “who cares” event to flash it at. i actually think the shoes are cute with this.

  • newtonGOTbeaned

I’m not in love with the shoes, but the dress and the bag are cute and I like them together. IN.

  • I don’t know. I do like the dress, but agree that the accessories aren’t working with it, really.  Overall, I’m going to give her an IN, especially since she looks all smiley and happy and I love her hair. She would have looked awesome with that giant flower thingy on her head though….

  • joe_tey83

It’s alright. Not IN, not OUT, just MEH. I’m one unborn fawn who just don’t get the obsession with her.

(Anyhoo, she’s really way too skinny.)

  • R. L.

It’s all too much!  She needed to lose the bag.  On first look I like the dress as it had a Navajo design feel to the top but the bottom is too lingerie-ish.  So OUT.  And I love Zoe.

  • Shoes are average but she looks great otherwise. IN

  • finnishmaria

Surprise – I like it. IN!

  • understateddiva

In.  Not super pulled-together but nothing sticks out as completely out of place.  Honestly, if I had that purse I’d bring it along to every event too.

  • StrandedFashionista

The bag IS a bit much, but I like the outfit. IN.

  • Joyce VG

    Meh. OUT.

  • BrooklynBomber

Well, obviously she needs a hat. I’m thinking something eye-catching, like a giant red rose or something.

Only problem is, and geez, I hate to say this, but the thing that’s not working with her lately isn’t a wrong handbag or blah shoes: it’s that main thing one sees is gauntness.  Her ability to fit into anything has lost its value.

  • I like her Farrah-esque hair. The dress looks like a bright orange doily. Out.

  • janetjb

The dress is okay, but that’s it. Her lack of makeup, drab hair and accessories aren’t working in her favor.

  • Elizabeth Wiggs Maas

She looks fantastic! I totes disagree with you guys. I love the shoe color and the bag. IN.

(This makes me wonder if I have no fashion sense…could I really doubt the word of T&L?!)

  • IN! It’s not flawless, but no where near being an out.

  • Louise Bryan

I like it.  IN.  So there.

  • jw_ny

Only the bag is out…the rest looks fab!

  • Is it fair to give an OUT to that damn runway styling?

  • butterflysunita

IN.  She looks so radiant and fabulous that quarrels with her bag and shoes seem like nitpicks.  I love the dress, too.

  • mjude

i really dont care for the dress….OUT

  • mozzer0906

OUT.  The hair is sad.  The bag and shoes are horrid.  The dress isn’t even up to typical Zoe standards.  Sigh.  So sad.

  • I cannot deal with that bag being superimposed against that dress, even though I like both. Sorry pumpkin, sometimes fashion is about restraint. OUT.

  • Pannyx

    Still an IN IMHO.

  • benjamin478

she gets an IN. she just…always does something right.

  • BeeBeauNYC

IN. Here’s the math: Drop dead gorgeous Zoe Saldana + dress made out of fuckingfantastica – Meh shoes – busy purse = A God Damn IN!

  • formerlyAnon

Oh, I agree. (ETA: meaning OUT) Bag & dress have completely different and not complementary ‘feels.’  And I think the colors clash.

And I (noted stylist which I am, natch) would not have used that metallic belt. I’d have gone with a solid color or with a non-reflective pattern in colors reminiscent of a Mexican fiesta palette.

  • tired_mommy

    In. Cute for a luncheon.

  • suzq

Nope.  You’re right.  Bad styling ruins an ok dress.  Great styling would have put the whole look over the top.

  • mswindy

in.  i am not wild about the purse (either with the outfit or on its own) but i like the rest of it.

  • PeggyOC

Out.  The elements just aren’t working, and I actively hate the doily-tablecloth hem on the dress.  Apparently we’ve found the line where fabulous can’t save you.

  • Um T & Lo…. sorry m’dears, but she looks fabulous… just like 99.5% of the time. And I want that dress stat…. as in my closet right now. *sigh* IN w/o a doubt.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • Greg Yoder

I think she looks great.  IN.

  • Ms_Flyover

    Count me with the outs.

  • JackieOBlue

When I first scrolled down my initial reaction was IN, but the as I scrolled down further, I had to change it to out.  Hate the white under the dress and could the nude platform pump please go away forever.  I can’t believe that is the best shoe she had to choose from.

  • JackieOBlue

When I first scrolled down my initial reaction was IN, but the as I scrolled down further, I had to change it to out.  Hate the white under the dress and could the nude platform pump please go away forever.  I can’t believe that is the best shoe she had to choose from.

  • I’m one of the PUFs who don’t agree with you regarding Zoe. Oddly, I think she makes the dress look better than it would if someone else were wearing it. I mean, red lace ain’t easy to get away with, but somehow she manages. As for the accessories, love the shoes, hate the bag. Also, her hair looks like hell. I give her a small IN for improving the hell out of the dress.

  • rainwood1

Just barely IN.  The bag serves to cover up much of that godawful detail at the hem.  It was otherwise a cute dress.  The nude platform shoe as a species needs to die an immediate and painful death.

  • prettybigkitty

OUT.   I expect more from Zoe.  The bag does not go with the outfit.  And the ice skater ruffle at the bottom of the dress is . . . .unnecessary (to say the least).

  • Not that bad.Barely IN, but IN, nevertheless.

  • alyce1213

IN, she look fantastic, but I agree the clutch is a problem that might have worked if it were much smaller.

The shoe detail you pictured is not the same color as what she’s wearing, which looks like a coppery color, not nude.
I hate nude platforms, but copper works for me.

Why are people disliking her hair?  I think it looks very pretty and shiny.
I want that red hat thing on the runway model.

    • Sara__B

About disliking her hair — yes, it’s pretty and shiny, but to me it’s not a very flattering style for the shape of her face.

  • elemspbee

No vote here. kinda blah. Funny timing. I just saw her shopping at Gelson’s. I have to say she has transformation powers. She really looks unremarkable in person.

    • alyce1213

It’s surprising how unremarkable looking some celebrities and models look in person.  I was on a supermarket line with James King and the last thing you’d ever think is that she was a model. Same with Susan Sarandon, who lived in my neighborhood and could be seen frequently without makeup and styling.
      Very unremarkable indeed.
Let’s hear it for the makeup artists and stylists who take a blank canvas and make pretty.

      • elemspbee

Most def! Here here to stylists, hair and make up artists, posing coaches, and a whole team of artists! Power of transformation is a team effort.
I’ve seen Susan Sarandon in civilian clothes/get up and I still found her quite striking. She stood out in the crowd, for me at least, even wout all the props.

  • annieanne

Love the bag. Hate the shoes.
    Dress iz gorg.

  • Jessi03

    IN!  She’s fabulous!

  • Monabel

Dressed in dyed vintage lace curtain scraps? Out.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

now i woulda liked it better if she’d worn the flower on her head.

otoh, she’s just like the princess across the way: so thin that every single thing is gonna look something like reasonable. if not better. in my miserable misspent youth these people were called, i believe, clothes hangers by the profession. i, sadly, could never quite starve myself into being one. nevermind drinking baking soda to make me grow. upwards not outwards, etc & ect. that was the ticket.

anyway, it’s all a bit too busy & the shoes are dull but the dress is a beauty.

edited cos disqus is sometimes irrerepressible [or, rather, its opposite] w/ linebreaks.

  • GTrain

OUT and looking scary thin to me.

  • IN just for rocking that dress. Fabulous color.

  • aristida_girl

I can’t say this look is all bad, even though I agree with TLo about the details, and I think it sort of looks like a doilie or tablecloth, but dang, she is workin it anyway, so reluctant IN from me

  • Joy

I’m with T & Lo, tsk, tsk.  Out, Zoe.

  • I like the dress, and I like the bag.  I’m indifferent to the shoes.  I don’t like her hair.  I don’t know why, but that’s the first thing that jumped out at me.

  • I say in. She looks cute.

  • I feel like given the standard she’s set for herself, this should be an OUT for the lazy accessorizing, but she still looks damn good and that dress is killer. So she’s still IN, in my book.

  • Not her best look, but she’s still Zoe Saldana. IN

  • Judih1

Out for all the reasons you stated. Plus she looks malnourished – can someone please give her some carbs to eat!

  • Jessica O’Connell

Not a fan of the shoe color at all…but I really like the dress…not sure…

  • She gets an overall IN for the dress, but the accessories aren’t well chosen.

  • IN

  • the styling is almost too much but as always she is werqing it…IN

  • quiltrx

OUT.  She is TOO THIN these days, making all these clothes just HANG on her.

And her hair is stringy too often as well.  Ick on the shoes, meh on the clutch.  Come on girl, you can do better than this.

  • butter nut

love the dress, hate the shoes & bag.

  • kingderella

IN for overall fabulosity. lots of nitpicking to be done, though.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Dress is fine, everything else is wrong. She’s OUT for me.

  • OUT. The dress is ok, but all the elements here look like they are at war.

  • TieDye64

Cannot tell  you how much I hate the clutch and shoes. Not wild about the dress, but somehow she’s kind of rocking it.

  • Ezmartin

  • ccm800

    IN for certain

  • Meh, OUT.

  • cleep1000

  • RedRaven617

    In. Love the bag.

  • Everything is a little un-matchy, but for some reason it’s all working for me. I have serious dress envy. Her hair and makeup look beautiful, and she’s working it! IN.

  • demidaemon

I actually like the shoes with this, love the dress, and have no particular feelings about the bag. So 2 out of 3 equals IN.

  • BayTampaBay

    OUT!  The shoes are awful.

  • another_laura

Out. Like TLo says, this is a disappointment from a gal who has raised expectations. Looking like this at a stylist luncheon? Shudder

  • Dhammadina

    In in in.

  • jcolli69

IN. I like the choice of a wild print purse with the print (crochet?) of the dress. And I support the shoes bc of said prints.

  • In. I love the dress and bag. The shoes can bite me, but I like the look.

  • That dress is hella ugly…

  • Lisa

“God, can you imagine what a hellish bitchfest the ’25 Most Powerful Stylists’ luncheon must be?”
    Haaaah!!  I know, right?

I’ll take that fabulous clutch!  She can keep the rest of that hideous outfit.

  • Emily Roach

Oh, IN. She looks great. She makes everyone rethink fashion and pairing. And she looks so pleased. Like, she has a JBF look to her!

  • OUT – other than the woman herself (who is awesome) I hate everything about this look, from the tablecloth frock to the tacky python bag to the dull shoes.

  • Eva_baby

    IN.  She looks good.

  • tsid2012

Interesting dress, FAB clutch, boring as s**t shoes all add up to a confused look.  Sorry, OUT form me.

  • adnama79

Her hair, makeup and the dress carry her to an “in.”  Different bag would have been better; the shoes aren’t perfect but don’t take away much from the look.

  • AWStevens

TLo get more caffeinated.  She’s an IN…

  • nancylee61

I like that she takes chances, and wears unusual clothes. I don’t like the lining on the dress – that it is shorter than the dress itself, it looks like Saldana didn’t have a long enough slip in her linen drawer, very 1970s, 1980s. I used to wear slips, and this reminds me of a slip faux pas.

  • Yuck – out

  • Out. Looks like she dyed my grandma’s lace tablecloth.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

OUT.  I can’t believe I’m voting out a Jimmy Choo bag, but that is one uuuugly bag.  And the dress isn’t fabulous enough to make up for it.
