In or Out: Naya Rivera in Moschino

Posted on March 26, 2012

If we were going solely by first impressions, we would have shouted “OUT!” and be done with it.

Naya Rivera attends the 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York City in a Moschino dress.

Moschino Fall 2011 Collection

Because our first impression was that it was a little “I want to be in America” with the red shininess and the ruffles. But the more we look at it, the more we kind of like what’s going on here.  We really love the way the dress looks from the back and that neckline’s really growing on us. The one aspect of the dress we could’ve done without (besides the shiny) is the ruffle along the hem. Everything else suits her quite well. The hair and makeup’s a little downplayed, but we suppose that’s for the best when you’re wearing a shiny red dress with ruffles. You don’t want to wind up looking like a fortune teller, after all. What really tips this over to the OUT column for us are the shoes. Those things are tacky as hell.

Vote Now!

IN! If any gal could pull off a shiny red ruffled dress, it’s Naya!

OUT! I can’t with those ruffles.

The minions liked Malin Akerman’s science textbook cover of a dress, but though the rest of the package looked a little messy, voting the look OUT.

Out. I had the opposite reaction: I wanted to like it on her, but upon closer inspection, I noticed that the fit is terrible. She looks lumpy in all the wrong places, and that girl has a slamming body. The shoes are awful.

    •  Out.  What she said.

    • Exactly this. I just can’t get over how lumpy and poorly-fitted the whole thing looks. OUT.

    • tired_mommy

    • ballerinawithagun

Out! I agree with everything, where did the beautiful draping go?

      • introspective

I would actually say that the original dress was lacking to begin with. I dont see the draping as beautiful. its sort of a messy hybrid of ruffles and what seems to be almost but not quite ruching on the model. and then it gets even worse when it goes from the model’s body to Naya’s which petite as it is apparently has more curves to make the almost ruching just look like unflattering bunching. that, the plastic shoes and the neckline are making this a no. But her hair and makeup are really pretty. just not pretty enough to make up for this tragedy tof a dress.OUT

    • Ditto. It’s like she has two boob shelves. Bad, bad dress making Ms. Rivera look less than the perfection she is.

    • JosephLamour

agreed. those ruffled flaps on the back are too strangely fluffy. i like the neckline, but shes not only wearing a neckline. OUT.

    • Out, what she said exactly!  Hate the dress on the model too.

    • Yep, this. OUT.

    • Pinup Ghoul

The shoes look like torture devices.

    •  Anathema Device! I love Good Omens!

  • belfebe

OUT. That dress looks sort of Chiquita Banana.  Beautiful woman.  Tacky dress.

  • Jenna Kuhmann

I don’t like it.  She looks droopy all over.  OUT.

  • serenitynow02

I like the neckline as well, and in another fabric, might have liked the dress very much. But, as is, that red satin is way too bordello for me. Anyway, I’d give her an automatic out just for the horrible shoes with toe cleavage.

  • Cautiously Pessimistic

OUT.  If you’re going to wear red satin, it better fit.  There are way too many wrinkles across her midsection and she looks like she has no chest.  Frankly, it looks awful on the model too.

  • If it fit like it did on the model this would have been a full IN For me.  But it just fits like shit on her, and with those shoes I just can’t.  And a ruffle slit? It looks like ruffle poop to me.

    • drdirection

do those shoes have clear plastic on them?  How does she keep them on?  They barely cover her toes?   I don’t understand!!

      • Oh yes, they are clear plastic.  Don’t people know you simply cannot own a pair of clear plastic shoes and someone not think “stripper shoes” regardless of what they look like.

  • The only thing I like is the color.  The back looks like she took a round ruffled tablecloth, wrapped it around herself, and pinned it together.  The less said about the shoes, the better.

    • emeazul

Get OUT of my head, Kilt!!! I was going to post the EXACT same thing…I kept thinking I could make myself a pretty little dress with the flowered tablecloth my mom has from 1994!! (…maybe I would need two tablecloths though)

      •  Sorry, sometimes I just pick things up from the aether without thinking. I really need to work on blocking out stray thoughts better.  lol

    • Louise Bryan

Tablecloth, that’s what it is.  Out.

  • I like it on the model, but it’s a badly fitted mess on Naya. And the back is just tacky, OUT.

  • sarahofalessergod

The more I look at it, the more I like the ruffle detail, and the color is fabulous on her.  I’ll go against the grain and say IN.

  • Greg Yoder

It makes her look like her tits are pregnant.  OUT.

    • gabbilevy

Seriously, I can’t figure out what is making the dress bulge like that!

  • In, despite the shoes.  She looks lovely; great color for her.  I’m not digging the hair, but I’m not sure what I’d suggest as an alternative.  The back of the dress is vavoom!

Kinda surprised that I dig the hose on the model… Hope that’s not a sign of an upcoming trend.  I can remember the days when “power hose” were color coordinated with your shoes and suit.  (shudder)

  • RebeccaKW

The shoes are terrible.  I like the hair and makeup.  I like the back and the color and don’t even mind the two ruffles so much.  But the fit is awful.  She looks like she has 2 rows of boobs and it’s pulling at her hips.  Also, matchy clutch.

  • VioletFem

IN. The color is gorgeous on her. Although this dress has way more ruffles than I usually prefer, the overall affect is still very pretty. Could have done without the ruffly helm and a different pair of shoes though.

  • siriuslover

Out. I can’t even deal with it this morning.

  • formerlyAnon

Out. But I’m biased because I trend against ruffles.

  • Mmmm, it’s sadly an OUT. She’s pulling it off, but the dress is a mess ( the ruffles, honey, no…) and the color pattern and hair are indeed saying “hot latina stereotype”.

  • Out. It doesn’t even fit her, and her hair is all wrong. And sorry, but it looks like what That One Aunt wore to your quincenera in the hopes that some of your dad’s coworkers are single.

  • OUT. She looks like an inflamed vulva.

  • R. L.

I wish I could like it.  The fit on this tacky dress is not good.  Sigh.  Out.

  • Pupioso

Out. The fit on the dress is odd. It’s like she’s all scrunched into it and it looks a bit disheveled. The shoes are fug.

  • In for the Anita reference.

  • ccm800

    IN and then some.

  • I hate the shoes. The rest looks good though. Scrolldown fug, but IN.

  • guestela

Front looks terrible, back looks great, shoes are laughably bad. Out.

  • nannypoo

    Trust your first impression.

  • miagain

There’s just too much happening with this dress… capelet, ruffles and shine shine shine… My system has overloaded!

  • mhleta

Out. It looks like there’s and alien trying to escape from her solar plexus. Lady’s, take a flash snap shot of you in your dress before you go out. The flash does nasty things to shiny clothing. The combo of the color and ruffles with her Latina-ness definitely takes it into Rita Moreno territory for me.

    • This. It makes her look like a caricature. The Anita reference is not a good thing.

  • Martova

    out. full stop.

  • LeBarron

I’m going to have to go with OUT.  Too shiny, wrinkly, and ruffly.  Not digging the shoes or bag either.  She does looks great from the neck up though.

  • saanrio

OUT.  The ruffles… all I see is Little Red Riding Hood personified…

  • alyce1213

Out, completely.  Girl needs some better undergarments, or maybe better tailoring, or both.
Red satin can be deadly, and this is.

    Plus – Kourtney Kardashian hair?

  • Out. Maybe this is just the tendency of the fabric, but the fabric is pulling across her weird.

  • nancymae

  • Pants_are_a_must

OUT. This is a badly made dress that looks awful on both Rivera and the model.

  • Out.

  • lalahartma

Out, something is up with the fit and those shoes!

  • fireontiger

Maybe it’s good on paper (minus those terrible shoes), but it just doesn’t look like it’s fitting her well. She looks lumpy, and Naya Rivera is NOT lumpy. OUT.

  • It’s a little cha-cha. IN-ish.

  • LongTall_Sally

OUT — she could do so much better.  Lumpy is never a good look.

  • MilaXX

Sadly it’s an easy OUT. Very rarely did satin dresses work and this wrinkly mess is no exception. The only thing I do like is the hair and makeup.

  • mellbell

My feelings on the dress are just the opposite (love the neckline unconditionally, hate the back, think the ruffle adds balance), but I’m with y’all on the shoes. OUT.

  • I feel enormously gratified that on first glance, I thought, “Hi Rita Moreno!” Here’s where we differ: love it from the front, hate it from the back. Out.

  • OUT. Don’t like how it fits across the torso with all the folds and wrinkles. Don’t like the neckline. Love the back, though.

  • OUT. Ruffles I don’t mind but the shiny and the shoes, ugh.

  • MzzPants

Let me shout it for you:  OOOuuuuuTTTT!  The way it’s shaped in the back makes it look like she’s wrapped in a red satin bed skirt.

Other items:  dress too tight, terrible shoes, matchy purse, yard-work hair, too much eye make up.

  • jw_ny

Back and forth on this one, but ultimately OUT

Good color on her, I like the top ruffle/collar and also like the dropped back.  Hair and makeup are pretty.

I am bothered by the fit, perhaps too tight, and how she appears to have a bulge under her breasts.  Maybe it’s an illusion due to the sheen and the way the folds are spaced…idk.  If the dress were looser and had more folds, as on the model, I think it’d have worked.   I don’t like the bottom ruffle and the way it slits up at the rear, also don’t like the sheen nor the shoes.

  • Out. That’s a hot mess of a dress, it doesn’t come close to fitting & it isn’t even seamed properly, you can see the puckering. Did she learn nothing from that satin Vera Wang that had exactly the same problems? And the hair & shoes are a disaster. Plus WTF is with the matchy satin bag? That’s so junior high.

  • Scarlet39

OUT.  There’s just too much going on and the seams look tortured.    And it makes her look like she has an upper *and* lower gut, which she certainly does not!

I do think she looks great from the neck up, however.

  • AlexisPayne

    Out, too shiny

  • lifetime_student

Out. The dress is interesting in theory, but that cheap looking material makes it look like a bridesmaids dress from the clearance rack at Penney’s. And those shoes are just tragic.

  • poggi

I also like the back too, but if your dress requires you to back into a room, stand facing the wall, and coyly glance over your shoulder the entire night it’s probably an out.

  • janetjb

The color is beautiful on Naya.

  • altalinda

  • MoHub

Out. And can we please see an end to the just-below-the-knee hemlines? They make lower legs look like stumps. So much nicer when the hem hits at mid-knee or just above, where a natural break in the body occurs.

  • Terence Ng

I hate the fabric, but I like her in it. There’s something I enjoy about it. IN.

  • Out. It’s horribly wrong on so many accounts… And those pale lips do nothing for her. And clear plastic shoes are the devil.

  • Ick. Out.

That level of rufflage makes me shudder.

  • kirble

It’s too blah for me to decide either way, but it kinda looks like there’s a little bit of puckering (as well as the bunching, which I guess is intentional) on the runway, too. Seems like there’s no way she could have made this work for still photos even if the fit had been better.

Also, the collar is wilted, spoiling the one aspect of the dress that worked for me in the runway version. It’s like what happened to Laura Bennet when she had to bring her couture maid’s outfit back from Paris.

IN for Naya, OUT for the dress.

  • Verascity

OUT. The fit is horrible, and I can’t get past the neckline or the shoes.

  • NurseEllen

Out.  That dress is yust rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrong.

  • prettybigkitty

    Out.  Shiny red bed skirt.

  • This is horrific.  She looks like she has two regular breasts and then a lower one between them.

  • BazoDee

OUT – the ruffle at the bottom tipped it for me.

  • marilyn

OUt.  Too tight, and she is too short to wear it. The shiny and ruffles don’t help.

  • benjamin478

Yeah that’s an OUT. Look at what it does to her body shape.

  • TLo – stick with your first impression, that was right on the money. Love this lady, but the dress is wearing her! And if you have to decompose a look to appreciate the parts, then it just isn’t working as a whole.

  • Lizzyisi

Out. Hair & makeup are good. Color is gorgeous on her. Neckline is lovely; back of the dress (as noted by others) is T-A-C-K-Y. Hem ruffle lays better on the runway and is (in theory) a nice counterpoint to the neckline and important to the overall shape, but it’s too much. Shoes are awful; bag looks nice, maybe?

  • Out, it looks terrible even on the model.

  • TheLaurenJean

    Out. Tacky….

  • OhDoogs

Out. This is reading very “Kardashian” to me.

  • If I have to stare at a dress for fifteen minutes to see if it’s going to grow on me, it’s OUT.

  • DaringMiss

I don’t like the fact that you can see her undergarments (a common trend among actresses these days).  The Spanx line at mid-thigh is just tacky.  Her stylist should have gotten her a bigger size so that the drape was fluid and elegant.

“Love the girl, hate the look.”

  • CQAussie

No sorry OUT.  I can’t even with those ruffles but her shoes were the worst.  Are those freaking clear shoes?  Oh hell no.  OUT.

  • sagecreek

I love her, and it looks good from the back, but the front is a mess, and that hem ruffle went out with Lil Abner. OUT.

  • Bunchily, shine-ily, droopily, oh so sadly OUT.

  • marywv

    Yeah. 100% OUT

  • TheOriginalLulu

I don’t know. Looks like one big tacky feast from where I’m sitting.
Eva Longoria would kill for this dress.

  • j_anson

OUT. I love – well, like – this dress on the model, whose perfect proportions help keep it sleek. But it’s not doing Naya any favors.

  • jjfg

I also like it on the model, but on her, it screams BRIDESMAID.  The only thing missing are DTM shoes.  OUT.

  • BrooklynBomber

I think this is like one of those cleavage OR thigh-high slit situations, only in this case it’s business in the front OR the back, not both. Plus it fits the model perfectly but it doesn’t fit NR well. Out.

  • Stubenville

    J’adore matador. OUT.

  • Joyce VG

OUT. Ill fitting and cheap looking.

  • P M

IN. Very cute. Please don’t eat me.

  • Feeling generous this morning. In.  Why not?

  • Aly Light

    The shoes are ignorable. IN.

  • unbornfawn

OUT. Are you kidding me? She’s got a ruffle in her butt crack. The dress is too tight, shiny and pulling all kinds of funny. The dress makes her boobs looked squished and is giving her a pot belly. Toe cleavage and bad posture!  OUT! OUT! OUT!

  • HobbitGirl

  • PhillipWilde

The dress is okay, but just too flouncy, and god, the TOE CLEAVAGE! I can’t. OUT.

  • HobbitGirl

Out! She looks lumpy and even like she has some midsection flab, which has to be because of the appalling fit and shininess of the satin. This does her no favors at all. Good color, though.

  • lrhoff

    Out all the way…..

  • FFS, it doesn’t fit, its completely the wrong size, & horror of horrors, you can see the line of her Spanx. Even they don’t fit her properly. Add in the Kardashian hair & shoes & the result is both she & her stylist are in need of a good smack of sense.

  • CatherineRhodes

    OUT. Tacky, tacky.

  • Out

  • sleah_in_norcal

IN.  because she plays my favorite little latina lesbian cheerleader, and just LOOK at that butt!

  • Out. I agree on “I want live in America.”

  • I’d be willing to give her a provisional IN if the front of the dress fit as well as the back.  But as it is, oh honey NO.  OUTOUTOUT (I actually really do like her makeup here, though.)

  • Ugh, THOSE shoes again?
    But IN nonetheless.

  • I can’t with the shiny. And those shoes just plain do not fit her. Out.

  • Aurumgirl

I had those shoes about 30 years ago, got them for a dollar at a clearance sale–back then, the Chanel pump and all it’s permutations were a big deal, and the shoes I had, like these ones, were pretty much 100% plastic.  I used them for a Gangster Girlfriend costume though–looks like that might have been the thinking here, too.

  • Judy_J

OUT.  This little red dress is too shiny, too ruffly and too tight.  And those shoes should be taken out and burned.

  • I read “maraschino” instead.. ’nuff said. So that’s an out for me.

  • meowing

Sorry, guys, but a giant OUT; any dress that gives a tiny little lady a bi-level tummy is all kinds of wrong.  And even then, the upper-level tummy looks to be the same size as her bustline.  All the ruffles makes it look like cheap shower curtains.  And really tragic shoes.  Not much redeeming here.

  • alyce1213

Looks like she got her dress stuck in her panties in the back when she went to the bathroom.

  • Too much froof. Out.

  • OUT. I just can’t with the shoulder ruffle.

  • IN. At least she’s not looking frumpy.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Well, hair and makeup are good, I don’t love the dress, but her ass looks spectacular.  And yeah, the shoes are bad.  Bad enough to push this over to an out?  I think so, unfortunately. OUT.

  • Larkin21

Not just a ruffle hem but ruffle hem going up the butt. If anyone could pull it off, it’d be Naya, yes. But … she’s still OUT.

  • Out. I can’t see how anyone can look past the tackiness of the back of the dress and then complain about the shows.

  • Janie22341

    Error always addresses the passions and prejudices;
truth scorns such mean intrigue, and only addresses the understanding
    and the conscience.

  • Didn’t even notice the shoes. Impressive dress. IN.

  • another_laura

oh no, OUT! OUTOUTOUTOUTOUT!  The dress is awful, and those shoes!  Clear plastic!  gaaaaaa!

  • OUT for not wearing a size that actually fits her. And those horrible shoes.

I’ll do it for you; OUT. Done with it.

  • DinahR

Her makeup is beautiful.  The dress is not flattering… and I assume that means it would not be flattering on anyone.

Also, her hair. It looks just like mine does when I go to pick up my son from school in the afternoon.  I didn’t know I was sporting a red carpet hair look.  Go me!  But I think this means we’re both OUT

  • IN for having color and being unique. This is a one time Get Out Of Critique Free card. Don’t waste it.

Considering the fit and everything it should be an out. *sigh*

  • Jessica O’Connell

OUT. I don’t like the dress, I don’t like the shoes, and I don’t like that the dress somehow makes her look like she has to hold in her stomach all night, when we all know that her body is incredible. It’s just not flattering on her at all.

  • Ksagun13

OUT.  Hate the ruffled hem, hate the shiny fabric, hate the shoes.  Naya, what were you thinking??

  • msftmargarita

Out- I don’t like the dress at all.

  • sleepycat

    OUT!! distaster!

  • TheOtherChristina

This is so close. I’m in complete agreement with all of your suggested edits — silk (or pretty much any other fabric) instead of satin, lose the ruffle on the hem, burn the shoes and salt the earth. With those changes this would be phenomenal, but that’s too many changes to give it an in. So, OUT.

  • Out.  Love the front, but hate the back.

  • oatmealpie

Out. Bridesmaid in a wedding with a “Fiesta!” theme.

  • BrightsideSusan

    No, no, no.

  • butterflysunita

OUT.  Girl, that’s not anyone’s dress.

  • There are aspects of this that aren’t terrible, but out.

  • Lisa

Oh, wow, OUT.  So bad, so lumpy, ill-fitting and cheap looking.

  • MarissaLG

Oh no no no no. OUT.

  • PeaceBang

Good lord, no. OUT in every way.

  • OUT. It’s really not flattering to her body and her shoes are beyond awful.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

were i to only wear contemporary designers my wardrobe would be chock full of moschino [whenever i buy something new, cheap & chic tends to be very high on the list]. but this dress, oy, it really needs it to lay out the way it does w/ the wrinkles on the front in the manner of the model. elsewise it loses its everlovin oomph, if you will. & theres nothing to it but the collar & the ruffled butt-train, though a very nice ruffled butt-train it may be. i think it looks like a shiny red bag w/ fancy appointments on the starlet. so no.

as an aside, i had those shoes several decades ago. clear w/ black heels & toes? only they were ankle boots, only i was about six years old. they were my favorite shoes at the time, but they dont go here. they might go better on someone under the age of nine. by ten yr almost a woman [or at least i was, probably through a combination of height & family responsibility & skipped grades & all sorts of the various nonsensii that comes w/ the abovenoted], so thats probably a bit too old.

  •   Out, but I love the dress!

  • OUT! I can’t with the lumpy fit.

  • miatamam

Out.  It says “i wanna be a tablecloth” to me.

  • Awful. It would be more flattering in the back without that weird ruffle, I think. OUT.

  • Cautia

  • littlemac8

  • I had those exact shoes 15 years ago! Exact! That’s why they look so bad – they’re 15 years out of style!

  • Julia McLean

Lumpy torso syndrome, this looks like a cheap Halloween costume. Plus SO HEAVY on the makeup foundation! Lighten up, girl! OUT

  • fashionablylate

  • Sophie Collier

No.  It’s an interesting cut, but the cheezy red satin and those Shoes of the Devil (Shoe-cifer?) pretty solidly set this as an OUT.  This dress in a different fabric?  Possibly.

  • SatelliteAlice

Out… the shiny is bad the dust ruffley bit is worse and it puckers in some odd places.

  • OUT. she looks like a divan from a whorehouse trying to be expensive.

  • Out. That is just fugly.

  • Love the head. The head is good. Everything else, except the person wearing it, is out. I love Naya, but even she can’t work this. OUT.

  • DCSheehan

In. I like the dress on her. I can see I’m in the minority though…

  • I’m distracted by  what appears to be 3 boobs. out

  • OUT, onaccounta fit mostly.

  • GTrain

  • IN! It’s an updated classic.

  • AngelaGreen

Out.  It makes her lumpy up front and she’s not lumpy.  Girlfriend is hot, and this dress is not.

  • TieDye64

OUT. It’s looking worse the longer I look at it. I can’t with the ruffles, the fit’s not great and it’s just too damn shiny.

  • butter nut

tight, wrinkled, deflated & too shiny.  OUT!

  • Linderella

My eyes, my eyes!  Out.  Way out.  Out even on the model, whom it at least semi-flatters.

  • ThaliaMenninger

    I can’t with those ruffles.

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

Out. Aside from the ruffles and the shiny, it puckers in all the wrong places.

  • frankystein123

The backside is gorgeous (why of course), but the front is kinda hideous.
