In or Out: Mena Suvari in Christian Siriano

Posted on March 20, 2012

Didja ever notice that Mena Suvari, who wears a lot of Christian Siriano and attends his shows, actually looks like him a little bit? Seriously, mentally dye the hair black and put a pair of glasses on her.

Mena Suvari attends premiere of “American Reunion” in LA in a Christian Siriano dress.

Christian Siriano Fall 2011 Collection

Sutra Agate Quartz Earrings with Rose Cut Diamonds

Anyway, we like-but-not love this on her. It’s a cute dress and a decent twist on the standard LBD. We don’t know if she’s too short for it or what, but it all seems quite a bit fussier on her than it does on the model, especially that shoulder treatment. The hair looks good, the makeup looks extremely good, but the accessories are once again where the outfit fails for us. We try not to pass ourselves off as arbiters of style but really, if we had to instruct ladies on dressing themselves, we’d return to the one rule that always applies: It’s All About The Detailing. And when you wear neutrals or blacks, that rule becomes even more important. We’re not saying she needed a pop of color. Silver and sparkly are perfectly fine choices here. But those shoes are halfway to ugly and that clutch is too plain to do anything for the look. The earrings are gorgeous but they tend to blend in with her hair color a bit much. If you’re gonna wear the big danglies, why pick something that camouflages itself?

Vote Now!

IN! You shut your whore mouths. She looks practically perfect in every way.

OUT! Disco napkin.

Diane Kruger’s embroidered appliance cover received a near-unanimous OUT from the PUFs.

  • Pants_are_a_must

She is definitely too short for this dress. It’s not that much of a mess, though, and I’m giving her an IN for the above-the-shoulders look alone.

    •  I agree, IN. I love the dress on the model. It looks just okay on her, but her makeup is gorgeous (and I don’t usually even pay attention). Fierce but not over the top, with a nice soft edge.

  • IN

  • tonibaloney

OUT. Don’t like the dress and don’t like it on her. The length is very awkward.

  • I don’t know if she has the acting chops for it, but visually she’d be my choice for a marilyn. Heart-shaped face, very hooded eyes, and a certain magnetism. Meh idk.

    • Helen C

      See her in “American Beauty”.

  • RebeccaKW

Actually, I think she kinda looks like Fergie.

The dress is cute, but needs to be tailored for her shorter frame.  The shoes need to be burned.  The earrings are beautiful, but they are definitely ‘hair up’ earrings.

ETA: In. I like most of it.

  • guestela

I agree that she’s too short for the dress, but I still think she looks sharp. In.

  • Susan Crawford

She actually DOES resemble Siriano! Leave it to the eagle-eyed duo to discover the resemblance.

I am going for an IN, despite agreeing that the intricacies of the ruffling and pleating could have been altered a bit to fit her petite frame. Overall, I really liked this dress a lot when I saw it in Siriano’s collection. It has his signature detailing, but is also VERY wearable and more modern than those over-the-top fluff gowns (which I also adore).

I wish, too, that the accessories were a bit more colorful, and although I lovelovelove those earrings, I agree they were lost. (I would have gone with coral and diamond chandeliers or drops, myself.) But Ms. Suvari was werqing that look, she seemed perfectly confident and at ease, and was giving top-notch beyotch-face. What more IS there in life, dahlings?

  • MilaXX

IN but I agree with you on the accessories

  • DinaSews

IN.  The dress needs to be re-proportioned for her frame or at least make the length of the skirt (under the overlay) a little longer.  It’s hitting her in an unattractive place and the overlay takes over the dress here because the dress isn’t long enough.  She still looks good though.

  • Lori

She definitely needed to have the dress better tailored to the fact that she’s short. As is, it’s way too fussy looking on her. It’s not the worst thing ever, but combined with those awful shoes I say it’s an OUT.

  • Out – the accessories bring this whole look way down.

  • SewingSiren

I think she look like a humanoid version of Kristin Chenoweth. But when I her name I expect to see Mira Sorvino and she doesn’t look like her at all.

  • Laurie Bergman

I will admit to a long-standing “irrational dislike” of her.  This dress does not help change that.  I see a used black coffee filter that smacked the dress sideways and stayed plastered upon it. OUT.

    • Black coffee filter, yep. Held to the dress with a black corsage. Seriously, what is with that weird corsage brooch thing?

  • Out. The dress is wearing her.

    • butterflysunita

I agree–it’s a lovely dress, but it’s wrong for her.  When you look all you see is that big ruffle, while she fades into the background.  So In for Christian, OUT for Mena.

  • lrhoff

She looks good here — not a WERQ, by any means.  However, good enough!

  • IAmJ

I love Christian Siriano as much as the next PUF, but this dress looks cheap and somewhat unflattering to me.

    • ballerinawithagun

Yes, it might be silk but it looks like polyester to me.

  • k op

Gosh, I’m on the fence.  There are flaws in this look.  Still, the neckline frames her face beautifully, even with the fussy tulle.  It looks like Mena did have the hemline altered for her short stature, but it didn’t solve the problem of making her legs look stubby – which they aren’t really, she has a tight little bod.

    The shoes are hideous.

The breaking point is that ugly assed tattoo.  Jesus Pete!  The placement isn’t bad but what a horrible graphic!  Does this count against the outfit as a whole?  It seems like Mena wants to show off the tat with this dress, so yes, I’m counting it as part of the whole ensemble.

    In that case OUT!

    • look at the halfassed ‘lion’ tattoo above the text.  good lord!

    • Yeah, what shitty tattoos to show off. I was going to say IN, but I’ve changed my mind. OUT.

      • Glammie

Yeah, IN for the dress, but OUT for that awful tat.  It’s crying out for a laser.

        • missinmass

What does the tat mean?   word sound pewer…?

          • Glammie

    • AthenaJ

Agreed… Not to mention that tattoo would make a lot more sense on a rocker chick, but it does NOT work for lil’ Mena – no matter how much bitchface she serves.

  • ringthing

It kind of looks like the ruffle thingy is trying to eat her face. Out.

  • Judy_J

Meh.  I’m bored by this look.

  • “We try not to pass ourselves off as arbiters of style…” um, is that not why we are here?  Do what you do.
As for Mena – Out just so I can go into the Disco Napkin camp.

    • No, we’ve always been adamant about that. We’re not here to tell people how to dress. We’re here to talk about how celebrities dress and to have some fun doing it. We are NOT fashion “experts” and don’t want to be seen that way.

      • AthenaJ

Ok fine, but I (and I’m sure quite a few other PUF’s) reserve the right to have a running TLo commentary in my head whenever trying on clothing or choosing outfits.  Makes the process so much more fun – and helpful 🙂

      • ampg

Oh, guys, that’s like Jon Stewart saying he’s “just a comedian.” It might be the primary goal, but there’s no denying the ripple effect.  I mean, you’ve practically made Appropriate Pant Length for Red Carpet Appearances into an academic sub-field.  And there’s nothing wrong with that.

        • People can take what we say here however they like; we have no control over that. But the goal has always been to be entertaining, not to pass ourselves off as experts.

          • Perhaps, but I have learned a lot as I’ve been entertained. I do find myself often wondering, What would TLo think?”

  • Stefanos Mantyla

I actually thought she looked like Patricia Kaas, but less so here than on that other post about that Spring 2012 Ad Campaign.

I am thinking IN on this one, but barely. Fantastic earrings.

  • Something funny going on with the makeup around her eyes in the profile/back shot.  Also, kind of a meh dress styled with definited meh-itude.  Can I vote MEH?

  • In. Love Mena and Christian!

  • NCDFan

I think the problem with the dress is that she’s had to move in it, sit in it and the beautiful arrangement has been mussed. Still the hair and makeup are great and the dress still looks okay. And it’s still a tasteful LBD – so in.

  • I’m going with an OUT, because the proportions are just not working.

  • snarkykitten

all I can focus on is the tattoo. If you’re going to get that much of your neck/upper back covered, at least go to someone who will give you a body conscious tat and wtf does it even mean?

  • BazoDee

    IN. Nothing egregious here.

  • TheOriginalLulu

The dress probably is better suited for a taller girl, but I still think she looks great. Her hair looks super-shiny and pretty, if a little stiff. I’m giving her an IN even though the trashy tat is a terrible eyesore.

    • Agreed. IN.

  • DeborahLipp

She looks pretty darn good. I love the way the slightly fussy details draw attention to her face. I think it’s weird around her middle and the shoes are ugly, but she’s an IN.

  • Martha Deutsch

IN. You shut your whore mouths. The dress could be shortened to flatter her more, but I think the dress itself looks better on her than the model. On the runway it looks a little flat.

  • Louise Bryan

  • AlexisPayne

The embellishment is overwhelming her and aside from hair and face the rest is blah. Out.

  • Joyce VG

IN!  there’s a BUT- the length made her legs look stocky.   Not good.

  • I don’t love it, but I have no reason to dislike it (does that make sense?), so it’s a marginal “in” from me.

I’d kill for those earrings, though.

  • In–the shoes are bad and the proportions are off on the dress, but the good outweighs the bad.

  • out, because of the lame tattoo.

  • CPK1

In. Dress, hair, earrings (I agree on the color) IN (not resounding but an in nonetheless). Shoes OUT OUT OUT. yuck.  I never realized what an incredible color her eyes are.

  • StrandedFashionista

M to the E to the H. Looks tons better on the model. Makeup is good, but otherwise OUT.

  • TLo, I totally agree with you on those earrings. They just don’t suit her, which is why I think she should take them off and immediately send them to me!

  • gabbilevy

I dont have much of an opinion on her dress… It’s fine, but I love that the model is wearing Christian Siriano for Payless shoes. I saw them in the store… They were hawt. Too bad they weren’t in my size.

  • Astute observation on the resemblance. This look is more on the fence than any other I’ve voted on before so I’m gonna say PRESENT.

  • allisankelly

Face and hair are great. The shoes were interesting, but agree they could have been “bigger”. The dress is good, definitely seems too short for it when comparing to the model.

She gets an “IN” from me (despite [in spite of?] that tattoo on her back that I am not judging her for, I just don’t like big back tattoos on ladies).

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

  • Ceur

I don’t care about the outfit, I just have to show my approval of her face. She definitely brought it!

  • Bakerlooline

Unfortunate tattoo, though.  A little Dermablend would fix that right up.

    • sagecreek

Hee, we used the same word! It is, truly, a sad choice in tattooage.

  • Sara__B

Although she is obviously committed to the dress, I agree that she’s too short for it. I don’t like the shoes, but I do like her hair and makeup. Just barely In.

  • OUT.  And I’m sad to say that about our little Christian’s dress.

  • I don’t understand that strap. Why is it there?

  • sagecreek

IN, although I agree, it is busy. And oh, that’s an unfortunate tat.

  • serenitynow02

It’s a nice day; I’m feeling generous. I’m giving her a small in because this is the best I’ve seen her look in many a while. I loathe that tattoo and the shoes, though.

  • malvernite

i prefer the dress on mena than on the model. on the model it looks slightly banal. i agree the earrings could have been snappier.  IN

  • Amanda Russell

Out. The dress looks like it’s swallowing her and those shoes are hideous.

  • Sara Leigh Merrey

I can’t get past the ridiculous tattoos on her back. Seriously? They’ll detract from anything she wears that doesn’t cover them up. I thought it was okay until I saw the back view.

  • IN but hate the shoes. Also, now I can’t not see her as Christian Siriano’s blond, contact-wearing twin.

  • CQAussie

I don’t like how she’s looking here and maybe it’s the angle of the shots but I don’t think she looks that great in the dress.  The shoes are rather ugly, the earrings as you say is low impact.  I also think her make-up is a tad bland and then a tad harsh on her cheeks.  Love her hair though and the cut.  All of that to say….OUT.

  • Little_Olive

I know they are his signature but CS need to STOP RUFFLING.

As per Mena, I thought it was Carmindy from What Not To Wear hen I saw the thumbnail.

  • bailey debruynkops

she is too short for that dress, not to mention the dress is ugly. owwwt.

  • benjamin478

The look comes together just enough in my opinion IN

  • 3boysful

I j’adore the earrings, but her hair needs to be up or pulled back.

Dress too fussy, shoes too ugly.

  • kirkyo

I think she looks amazing, actually. Especially in pics 2-4.

  • The dress is fine, but it definitely isn’t quite working on her. Shoes and clutch are pretty bad, but you definitely can’t say she doesn’t look nice. Her face is doing most of the work, but what the hell. I say IN.

  • AWStevens

    Too boxy on her.  OUT.

  • kimmeister

The shoes look cheap, but overall I can’t say she looks bad.  A halfhearted in.

  • formerlyAnon

I wonder if this is just the power of an unflattering photo angle at work, but the dress doesn’t do anything for her, indeed it makes her look shorter and heavier than I imagine she is. Or at least than she can be camouflaged to appear.

    A possibly not-really-deserved out.

  • schadenfreudelicious

One of the worst tattoos ever, it’s tainted any possibility of an in, so OUT you go

  • Ann

The dress is an odd length on her, but overall, I think she looks nice. What is up with the styling of that model though? Her hair looks AWFUL! I think this is the first time I’ve ever thought the celeb looks significantly better than the model in one of your posts.

  • Ann

Forgot to mention that horrible tattoo! What was she thinking with that?  It definitely brings her class down a notch. I’m still counting her as an “IN” from the front, but I’m trying to forget the tattoo.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Disco napkin. The only thing I like is the earrings and ya can’t see ’em.

  • marilyn

OUT.  The fault is with the dress. What is with the fabric flower thrown onto the bodice?  That looks junky and distracting.  She is a gorgeous girl, but the dress is too fussy for ANYBODY.

  • Presumptuous Insect

OUT. Does she ever do any acting?

  • AthenaJ

While those black see-thru ruffles are slightly alarming in that they seem to be slowly creeping around poor Mena and might strangle her at any minute, I am actually giving this dress an in. It’s nice to see something different that is not crazy/skanky/twee.
My issues are mostly with the accessories. Clutch and shoes are boring, and those gorgeous earrings belong with an updo in order to be properly shown off. But let’s talk about the uglaphant in the room – that tattoo! Now, I am pro-tattoo (have one myself), but Mena, next time you really need to make a better decision regarding WHAT and WHERE!

  • maggiemaybe

That tattoo is making my eye twitch.

  • ampg

I agree she’s too short for it, but I still like it overall, so IN.

  • demidaemon

OUT. I feel like this makes her look a little thick, and, as Siriano dresses go, this one is not great.

  • NurseEllen

Boy, this is a rough call………above the neck she is definitely IN, since her hair & makeup are divine.  Below, well, not so much.  I think this makes her look big in the hips, which undoubtedly she is not.  Plus the length is making me twitch.  Maybe this is one of those dresses you really need to be 5″10″ and weigh 100 pounds to bring off.  I guess all that makes my final vote an OUT.

  • miagain

wonder if she regrets that tattoo?

  • kolokOlchik

I think she’s IN.  It’s not perfect, but she looks great and the makeup is amazing too

  • Wrenaria

Actually I think it looks better on her than on the model by a long shot. In.

  • alyce1213

This dress is a fussy mess. Not good for anyone.
I am so sick of tramp stamps.

    • MilaXX

That’s not a tramp stamp. Tramp stamps are on the lower back.

      • alyce1213

Yeah I know.  But I’m not nitpicking.  It’s on her back and it’s trashy.

  • girliecue

In. Although she is a tiny thing and the dress would of course look bigger on her, I think she let Princess Puffysleeves talk her into pumping up the ruffle volume. But her hair and makeup are possibly the best I’ve ever seen on her and bring out her beauty. So shut your whore mouths.

And thanks for giving me an opportunity to use that phrase!

  • greyhoundgirl

Out.  The dress is wearing her.

  • lesmaha

I’m voting out just because I love the phrase “disco napkin.”

  • MmmmmmmmK

Makes her look like she’s got big, thick piano legs. The rest of her, well, except for the atrocious tattoo, look very pretty. American Horror Story and the bangs nudge her over to a lukewarm in.

  • A hesitant in.

  • I like this dress enormously, which is how I describe that ruffle. You know, the ruffle on Suvari’s dress covers the front entirely, where on the model, it’s just a flourish. I think that’s why it’s reading as too big for her. Which it is. Out. Sorry, Christian!

  • Too Marchesa-y for me. OUT.

  • IN. Something about the way the dress sits on her body is really working for her. I agree re the details, but she looks gorgeous overall.

  • AuntieAnonny

  • In.  She looks gorgeous.  Makeup is perfection.

  • Lisa

It’s not a disaster, but you have a good point about the earrings.  In the straight-on facing forward pictures, you can’t even see them.   And the shoes are very, “I have a meeting with the marketing department at 2:00”.  Other than that, it’s fine.

  • jw_ny

I like the dress…think the proportions work on her.  Hair looks good too…especially like the way her bang replicates the angle of the bodice.

The flaws are in the details.  Wrong earring, needs a blinging bangle, and her makeup needs to be amped up a bit. No opinion one way or the other on shoes and clutch.

  • Maybe it looks cute and fun now, but this is the kind of dress that will bring on a red face later. Disco napkin indeed, it is out.

  • DCSheehan

Out. It makes her look wide. Also because of the tattoo.

  • Her makeup is amazing.

  • renad

Out. Disco napkin in craft class.

  • megohd

IN. I think it’s better on her than the model.

  • definitely IN!!

  • patticake1601

Too much of that fan effect fabric for her tiny body. It’s not proportional to her size.

  • quiltrx

IN, she looks pretty and polished.

  • ccm800

They look alike because they come from the same gnome village. This poofadoof detail is to big for her.

  • abigail3

What an ugly, stupid tattoo on an otherwise pretty girl. When will this hideous curse stop?!

  • fashionablylate

IN, despite the shoes and the off proportions.

  • Sophie Collier

IN, because in spite of the quibbles, even you boys thought she looked good.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

IN!  I agree with T-Lo re the earrings but not the shoes and clutch.  Overall, I thinks she looks pretty lovely.

  • In. She’s on the short side for the dress, but she still seems put together and I kind of like the heels.

  • gubblebumm

Pewer?  what the heck is that, thats one awful tatoo….why oh why

  • Candigirl1968

Out. She is too short for the dress.

  • unbornfawn

It is a bit fussy for her proportions. Still, she looks cute. IN

  • aristida_girl

    Out  disco napkin for sure…

  • She’s a bit short but it’s okay if you ignore the way the dress was on the model.  There’s a lot going on but the overall effect is nice. I love the earrings and make-up, hate the tatoo. IN

  • Lilithcat

    I love the earrings.

That’s about it.  The dress is a typical Siriano hot mess.  Pity, because for a brief moment there it looked as though he learned how to edit.  Apparently not.

  • Lilithcat

    I love the earrings.

That’s about it.  The dress is a typical Siriano hot mess.  Pity, because for a brief moment there it looked as though he learned how to edit.  Apparently not.

  • Beardslee

OUT, if only because “disco napkin” is so witty and apt.

  • Pennymac

Its such a pretty dress on the model. On Mina, it makes her look stumpy. OUT

  • GTrain

I love the earrings but that’s all so OUT

  • CatherineRhodes

  • piecesofconfetti

OUT. I like her face, but the dress looks too fussy.

  • another_laura

    A half-hearted In.

  • sleah_in_norcal

IN.  and a big thank you for promoting our princess.  agreed, the shoes are boring and here would be a great spot for one of those dvf purses.  the look is just young and perky enough to support it.

  • OUT, just for that stupid tattoo.
