In or Out: Lucy Liu in Chadwick Bell

Posted on March 15, 2012

We just don’t know what to think about this look. Walk with us while we work it out.

Lucy Liu attends the premiere “Detachment” in NYC in a Chadwick Bell dress paired with a Roger Vivier clutch and Giuseppe Zanotti shoes.

Chadwick Bell Fall 2012 Collection

It’s one of those dresses that we like, but we can’t really say why we like it and we’re not really sure if it’s working on Lucy. That’s kind of odd, because Lucy has a history of working the shit out of severe blacks or B&Ws. But this looks a bit too severe to us. It looks like she swam through an oil spill to get there. The dominatrix hair isn’t helping. She’s got a gorgeous head of hair on her and we think this dress would have been better served with something softer. We also think those shoes are a crime against style and it hurts our hearts to look at them on someone with as stylish a rep as Lucy. The clutch is fine, but it doesn’t really accentuate or punctuate the outfit. It’s just kinda there, looking like an afterthought. We guess what bothers us most about the look is that it just doesn’t feel put together. It’s like she made the freshman mistake of thinking one serious dress is all she needs.

IN! It’s different and eye-catching!

OUT! Girl looks a MESS.

The Hunger Games-obsessed kittens did not agree with our complaints about Jennifer Lawrence’s golden puddle of a dress, voting it IN. Loudly.

  • The addition of some killah shoes would have helped her here.

  • fembots have feelings too!

    • Pants_are_a_must

I beg your pardon, Robyn doesn’t deserve to have her lyrics in relation to this fail.

  • DeborahLipp

Prisoner of a Goth Shower Curtain.

    • Clueless_Jock

      LOL you nailed it.

    • Cathy S

I agree, you nailed it. Out.

      • Yes – Goth Shower Curtain with silly putty shoes. Which is must definitely and OUT. Her hair and purse only make it worse.

    • Totally sums up my “WTF” thoughts

  • SewingSiren

A very odd dress. I can’t imagine why anyone would pick it The way the darts have been converted to tucks looks sloppy to me. And the way the opaque rose appliqué covers one breast but the other is left partially bare reads  like a wardrobe malfunction. The double layer of chiffon on Lucy’s bodice causing  a weird heat mirage effect.

    • AthenaJ

Agreed, I love Lucy Liu, but I think we’re seeing a bit too much of her in this dress. I’m cool with dressing in a provocative or daring manner, but you’re right in that it just looks like a wardrobe malfunction… not sexy if it’s an oops.

      • BazoDee

is it a malfunction? It looks like her entire left breast is sheer.

        • AthenaJ

Yeah, from the pic of the model, I think the whole thing is supposed to be sheer… but it just looks awkward, which (at least to me) makes it have the appearance of an oops.

        • If all the sheer parts were solid and the sleeves were to the wrist, I think I would love this dress from the waist up. Still not sure about the skirt.

          • I WISH all the sheer parts were solid! I didn’t need to see Licy Liu’s nipple. OUT.

  • It reminds me of something catwoman would wear. She needs boots and a whip (lol)

  • kentiesgirl

Out. Thought dominatrix at first glance and the shoes offend me. I like the clutch, though. Lets ship it over to Betty Banks for her yellow dress and see what happens.

  • Smashed boob is never a good look. OUT

    • Mexxoo

Smashed boob with a missing nipple is even worse.  The runway look wasn’t lined, but the lining on Lucy’s look is just… freakish.  The boob is clearly there, just no nipple.  OUT!

      • Celandine1

Agree! The left boob is freaking me out. The shoes are awful. The dress looks like a scifi movie costume. It pains me to give Lucy an OUT.

        • DinaSews

The smashed partially invisible boob is killing me too.  OUT.

  • MilaXX

OUT! I’m surprised since I would expect Lucy to work this. I think her hair should be out and it needs a fierce pair of shoes to compliment it as well.

  • TheLaurenJean

Out. It just kinda looks messy? Not really sure what it is, but it’s just wrong. Maybe if she had more of a bright white lining, instead of the skin tone to let those flowers POP a bit more?

  • crash1212

Well, I’m glad she had it lined…under normal circumstances, that alone would be worthy of an IN. Ultimately, I must go with OUT. This is a difficult, but not awful dress, totally ruined by the details. If I’ve learned nothing else from Uncles T & Lo it’s DETAILS COUNT BITCHES! Also, those shoes? Could we just burn them?

  • S. B. Hadley Wilson

  • norseofcourse

High collar, applique flowers, and boring shoes… Lucy is far too fierce for this. OUT.

  • Smooshboob + shoes that look like tissue boxes = OUT

  • This woman is 43 years old. Look at that face. She can do whatever she wants.

  • Whimsique

I can’t get past the boob. What’s going on with that? The dress is sheer in the model version. In the top Lucy pic, is that nipple tape?

    • Vickiefantastico

I thought so too! It looks like an X over her nipple in the first pic. Her boobs look smushed in there. The shoes are moronic and the hair is a huge disappointment. Big out for me!

  • janedonuts

Girl seriously never ages. A better shoe would have made this happen.

  • Violina23

    Not even CLOSE… out!

  • belfebe

It’s the shoes.  Definitely the shoes.  And the hair.  Some dark red booties or something like that would have helped a lot.  As it is, OUT.

  • OUT. I agree, the styling is where she went wrong. I don’t think the hair is doing her any favors, and I would’ve gone with anything but nude pumps.

  • Evereything is random and odd.  Love Lucy.  Hate this look.  OUT.

  • BazoDee

IN -I can find 1000 things wrong with it -but still I’m left feeling she looks fantastic.

  • OUT. That looks like shit.

  • Major outtage. This is a girl that’s not your dress moment. Also I personally would appreciate it if every pair of. IDE platforms on earth would quietly turn to ash.

  • guestela

Out. Hate the sense that you should be seeing a nipple through that mesh but you aren’t.

    • Exactly.  If my first and primary thought about a dress is that I wonder where a nipple has gone, the look has to be an OUT…for more than one reason.

      • aristida_girl

I had to look for a long time to figure out if she was giving free nipple or not…

  • VicksieDo

    but she’s GORGEOUS

  • TLo, I feel your pain on this one. I like the dress, and I think it fits her very well. It’s different, and the material is fun and eye-catching. The clutch is nice, but you’re so right; it’s just kind of there. The shoes with this are tragic! However, I’m not really sure that softer hair would work with this dress; it’s kind of built for an in-control dominatrix type of vibe. Although I understand the desire to go without jewelry because it is a complicated dress, I’m thinking that some serious hoops might have worked here.

So – for daring to wear a difficult dress, I have to give this an “in.” But next time – some fierce shoes and earrings please!

  • ballerinawithagun

    Out, but she’s beautiful.

  • annieanne

Have to disagree. The dress is so unique and eyecatching that her hair needed to be out of the way. The clutch adds the requisite pop of colour. The only mistake is the nude platforms.

  • Whever

She looks like a member of the lesser-known Fabulous Borg division- but yes, those shoes are a crime. Bleagh.

  • howdoilook

IN for me, though the shoes make me sad and she looks a little Mission: Impossible-y. Still looks great overall.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

    this dress i love.

however, the shoes are so very wrong w/ it in all kinds of ways.

& that is what passes for domme hair these days? that? schoolmistress domme, maybe. i guess. then again, i’m nowhere near that scene any more, havent been in a  L O N G  time so what do i know about now.

i didnt even notice there was a purse & the makeup’s weak for the dress too. you know, still put me down on the plus side cos i love the dress just so much but it really is appointed wrongly.

  • Pants_are_a_must

MESS. BOOB-BARING MESS. Has Rihanna taught you NOTHING?

  • Out. It really seems all over the place and the shoes are horrible.

  • BayTampaBay

Love the dress but hate the shoes!  Therefore, In by a nose hair.

  • I’ve always kind of wondered what would happen when the see-through blouses hit the red carpet.  She’s totally got the body for it, but the dress looks like a rumpled up trash bag and the styling does nothing to save it.  Clichéd, but true.

  • In.  Love the clutch; wish she’d done something better for shoes.

  • CQAussie

OUT, it’s a glorified garbage bag.  The hair and shoes don’t help and the make-up is only so-so.

  • CalvinSmitty

I sat here for ten minutes trying to decide if I see nipple… still don’t know.

  • eclare

The dress is trying to walk the line between severe dominatrix (black leather/vinyl) and soft frilly innocent (floral pattern and girlish silhouette).  It’s a tough combination to pull off and its possible that the right styling could have gotten it there (the runway version isn’t bad), but Lucy’s hair, makeup, and accessories here, while pretty, are way to pedestrian for a look that needs a bit more help to define it.

Did any of that make sense?

  • AlexisPayne

Kind of love; and it reminds me of the scene in Charlie’s Angels where she comes in as a consultant/dominatrix.

  • MissMariRose

love her, hate that dress. OUT

  • mjude

  • rowsella

It’s the dress.  It’s fug.  Perhaps if the applique/leather? parts were not shiny it would not be so bad.  It is ugly when it shouldn’t be.  I hate the revers on the shoulder with the high neck, shiny skirt…. Lucy is a beautiful woman who could carry almost anything off.  I I bet she felt there was so much going on the dress, the hair had to be as plain/pulled back or it would just blend together.

The shoes, also…. again, I think she was going minimal with them d/t the dress which has too much muchness.  I like the bag ok.  She should have added a cuff and some button or hoop earrings, a fierce manicure, cocktail ring too maybe.  Maybe could have even gone a little OTT with some sheer black hose/textured hose on…. and some black leather shoes….

  • sagecreek

IN. But that’s all I got, so I guess it’s in by a hair.

  • TheOriginalLulu

    I don’t like it. OUT

  • formerlyAnon

OUT, but how  it looks on her is second to the dress itself. Maybe it’s different in person, but all of the weirdly over-elaborate detail (black dogwood flowers? or something like, plus applique-looking scales? leaves? abstract patchwork?) all over the dress is completely lost in these photos, it just looks oddly lumpy.

  • Synnamin

OUT. trashbags look good on no one

  • Joyce VG

Maybe if the sheer had color, like a red or a iridescent purple or I don’t know.  The clutch is nice of what I can see of it, but the shoes are just strange now.  I read the silly putty shoes were a thing because of its neutrality?? goodness.  I know this a no-no but I’m giving her an IN because I think her face looks absolutely stunning.

  • The good thing: her nipple is nowhere to be found. The bad thing: everything else, yikes. OUT.

  • Amy Ellinger

Oh honey, no… no no. head to (peep)toe fail.

  • CozyCat

On the whole she looks pretty good.  But it looks a little too much like the costumes she wore when she played a villian in some action movie (e.g., “Kill Bill”). So it really doesn’t work for me….

UNLESS that was what she wanted to accomplish (to show she can still play that kind of part?)  In which case, mission accomplished!

  • What is up with those shoes?! Ugh, that right there is OUT. I do like the dress, but maybe she and/or her stylist should have put more time into making it work. Weird boob action. OUT

  • Out. But Jesus, does she age? Her face is flawless.

  • Kate4queen

    IN for interesting 🙂

  • Farthingale

Out. The dress is too hokey, costume-like and armor-ish. She doesn’t need gimmicks. In if it were a jacket and skirt.

  • For me, it’s a titscrepency issue – I keep staring at her left boob waiting for something to happen.  It’s not right.  Yes, the detailing is bad too, but I keep going back to the boobless boob.

  • MzzPants

Watch the vinyl part to reveal my RIGHT BOOB!  This dress is the cousin of the ‘gateway to my vagi-magic’ dress.  OUT.

  • butterflysunita

IN.  Lucy Liu is so gorgeous she can rock the most ridiculous dresses.  This is almost an out for me mainly because of the weird now you see now it don’t effect around the nipple.  But she looks so beautiful I can overlook that.

  • OUT. Ugh. I hate that dress. For reasons of boob confusions, as noted by others.

  • OUT. Ugh. I hate that dress. For reasons of boob confusions, as noted by others.

  • Sara__B

The lining is essential but has messed up the look of the bodice, the sleeves are an awkward length (no wonder the model wore long gloves), and those shoes are beyond hideous. OUT.

  • Sara__B

The lining is essential but has messed up the look of the bodice, the sleeves are an awkward length (no wonder the model wore long gloves), and those shoes are beyond hideous. OUT.

  • out. the dress looks somewhat oddly shaped on her and the styling is sub-par.

  • out. the dress looks somewhat oddly shaped on her and the styling is sub-par.

  • Stefanos Mantyla

IN. Aside from the shoes, I think she looks great.

Why does Lucy have such a strange track record for IN/OUT? She has mostly scored OUTs for all the talk of how stylish she is, AND she scored an IN with what I think is her worst look. Weird, no?

  • shes all whips and chains on top and generic starlett on bottom. color me confused.

  • saanrio

OUT.  It just is not working.

  • lizajane1776

She is just looking too NICE for this to work. Need some power here!

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Out.  I just don’t like the dress at all.  And I hate the shoes.

  • Dress – In. Shoes and hair – Out and Out. The Outs win. She is a beautiful woman, though.

  • demidaemon

Like the dress on her, hate the shoes with a vengeance. OUT for missing on the details.

  • Realism…has no more to do with reality than anything else.

  • Pannyx

I’m a big fan but this is an out. I do disagree about the clutch. I think the purple against the black works well, although granted we don’t get a very good look at it in these pics.

  • alyce1213

Glad ForceFlex 30 Gallon Trash Bag.

  • Eeeee, does that model have leprosy? What’s going on with those legs?

  • NCDFan

Looks like it was made from used trash bags. OUT.

  • TSkot

A silly-looking dress that would look silly on anyone.  OUT

  • Anathema_Device

No. Out. I keep looking at her boobs trying to figure out if she just has nipple covers on or what. They have “tits on the glass” effect in that dress.

I like the concept of the dress, but I’m not digging it on her. Not sure I just want it to be lined better or whether it just needs to be on someone else. Ms. Mara, perhaps?

    • Sophie Collier

Someone no bigger than a modest B-cup, I think.

      • Anathema_Device

Yes, I agree. And for the record, I’m not usually a boob-obsessed minion, either.

    Oh GOD no. OUT.

  • TAGinMO

The shoes wound me, but everything above the ankles is killa. And I think severe hair was the only option here.

  • chitowndg

In (although I agree that the shoes are not the best).

  • greyhoundgirl

    Dress is very overstyled–out.

  • She looks like a Super Villianess whose powers are kind of lame. Like, Hoseria – she puts runs in women’s stockings so they’re always late to meetings.

  • OUT! Needs earrings, and maybe a black bra to play up the peek-a-boob dress.

  • Out.  The black blob is growing on her torso and trying to eat through her clothing to her skin.  I’m surprised she’s still smiling.

  • Haley Buchanan

No no no no no.  Looks like a Project runway garbage bag / leather car upholstery dress – the one that get’s schmaufed because the model’s boobies are showing.  OUT.

  • siriuslover

Sorry, don’t need to see a cyborg boob, now matter how attractive the wearer. Out.

  • fiestyfashionfem

Out, primarily because I can’t stop staring at the boob that has no nipple.

  • unbornfawn

OUT. Because what everyone else said and nipples should be in, thank you very much.

  • Sophie Collier

It’s doing something weird to her boob and that’s all I can notice.  It actually worked better on the model because her nipple accents that strange empty area.
OUT because it’s just not comfortable to look at.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • butter nut

looks like part of it blew off in a radiation accident.  probably looks killer in person, just photographs terribly.  but she’s an old pro & should know better, so OUT!

  • PeaceBang

The dress confuses me but ultimately I think it had a lot of potential. But not with peche clodhoppers and a random purple clutch.Weird. OUT.

  • Yuck.

  • It’s Glad-bag ugly and does nothing for her.  I could say the same for dress on the model.

  • SorayaS

WHY WOULDN’T SHE WEAR BLACK SHOES??! Ahem sorry about that but ugh they’re hideous. An easy IN if only she’d worn better shoes and some earrings. I like the hair, makeup and the clutch. I think she just manages to pulls the dress off but those shoes make it soo OUT.

  • Grace Ritt

OUT. The hair would have definitely been better down.

  • PastryGoddess

I kinda sorta get where she was going, I just wish she had used a GPS to get there instead of poorly written directions

  • ZnSD

Dress: Out on her. Lucy Liu: FOREVER IN.

    • BigShamu

I’m with you, Lucy Liu FOREVER IN.

  • sleepycat

Out, the dress is just weird.

  • bailey debruynkops

    i love her but NOOOOOO

  • Sally Brownson

She’s IN. Despite the horrid shoes, the dominatrix look is working for her, IMO.

  • another_laura

With a dress like this it pains me to give it a ‘meh’ (a painful meh?  discuss). but there it is.  Neither in nor out.

  • bitterk

Those shoes don’t belong in the same zip code as that dress.  OUT.

  • Pennymac

Chadwick Bell does an unconventional materials challenge?

  • we like it ONLY on Ms. Liu. IN.

  • R. L.

Out.  One stylish dress does not a look make.

  • aristida_girl

Out…sheer fabric with plastic flower applique’s and the shoes make her feet look odd

  • pokokpuding

    Oh Miss Lucy.

    Oh Miss Lucy.

    *wrings hands*

  • kcarb1025

Anything dominatrix-y gets an automatic OUT.

  • IN, but would be improved by a pair of shiny silver pointy pumps. The clutch is fine.

  • marywv

  • TheOtherChristina

I like the dress quite a bit, and I think that given the context of appropriate shoes and better hair, the clutch would prove to be a great choice. So, I’m going to call this IN. It could be much, much better, but it stil looks pretty good.

Is her version lined or does she have pasties on? I can’t tell.

  • Actually I don’t think it’s severe enough.  The shoes should be fiercer and the pouf to the skirt softens the impact of the dress too much.  All the elements are fighting each other.  Out.

  • tsid2012

All of it gets an IN from me until I get to the shoes.  GODFUCKINAWFUL!  But I still love you Lucy….

  • random_poster

Out.  I hate the dress and shoes.

  • The plain white bra beneath the see-through top is a bit distracting (and it looks like it’s smashing “the goils” into the bargain), perhaps a black bra would have worked better, or a black bra with pretty detailing?  I’m afraid the black leather detail appliques are just not photographing well, and I agree on the hair, this needs something softer to tone down the severity.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I keep trying to figure out her left boob.  Do I see nipplage?  Does she have a nipple or is she like a Bratz Doll?  Etc.  OUT.

  • Jessi03

    OUT.  What happened to her?

  • Out. Unless I’m peering at it, it looks a mess, which is not a good thing when one is walking a red carpet (i.e. nobody to look THAT closely).

  • Louise Bryan

She looks a bit matronly.  The shoes are sad; talk about an afterthought.  Her clutch is a nice pop of color.  -2 + 1 = OUT

  • Brendan Schulze

Well, I think that Lucy was doing great until she got to hair, shoes, and accessories. This outfit calls for some great shoes, maybe a pop of color to break up the sheer amount of black and gray. The blue clutch was a good idea… but it’s just not as obvious as if she’d used the color on, say, a pair of shoes, or maybe a silver bracelet of some sort. Her makeup’s good, but the hair needs to be let down out of that rather severe Asian Granny bun. And… well, I think only people with darker skin tones should wear ‘nude’ pumps. And peeptoe… ugh. I don’t even want to go there.

  • Rrroza

enough with these miserable shoessss already!!!

  • agree the shoes are awful (beige pumps seem to be the default color these days i.e. very dull) The dress works on the runway because of mentioned details like softer hair. Plus the model is wearing gloves to hide those hideous 3/4 sleeves.
