In or Out: Jennifer Lawrence in Prabal Gurung

Posted on March 13, 2012

We so wanted to give this a WERQ.

Jennifer Lawrence attends the premiere of “The Hunger Games” in LA in a Prabal Gurung dress paired with Jimmy Choo shoes and Jacob & Co. diamond earrings.

Prabal Gurung Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Toni Gam

It’s true. We were totally prepared to give snaps up to a gold metallic gown with side cut-outs. And no, we’re not sleep-deprived. At first glance, we think she looks amazing. At second glance, it starts to fall apart. For one, this dress doesn’t fit her correctly; for another, we don’t think it’s possible for this dress to fit anyone correctly. The weight of that skirt and the relative lack of structural support in the bodice (because there’s only half a bodice) is causing things to pull and buckle that shouldn’t pull and buckle. So we were all prepared to make this a “Girl That’s Not Your Dress” instead. Except we looked at the runway picture and realized that even on the model the skirt looks like it’s weighing down the bodice terribly. It’s a shame, because she’s got a slammin’ bod and could easily work a skin-tight gold metallic gown, but we don’t think this one’s doing it. As striking as she is at first glance, we’re comfortable declaring this one an OUT.

Vote Now!

IN! You bitches don’t know shit!

OUT! You are so right, TLo! Can I touch your hair?

Michelle Trachtenberg’s poor attempt at the “pop of color” was voted OUT, but Nina Dobrev’s semi-twee look was voted IN.

it is the dress. she is beautiful and has a great shape. that back construction is awful. eek.

  • clatie

Am I the only one who thinks this dress looks kind of cheap?  Perhaps it’s the fit issues TLo mentions.  Plus the netting.  Yeesh.

    Love her.  She deserved better.

    • AthenaJ

Yeah, it looks more Vegas than Hollywood. Too bad, she’s got a figure that could rock almost anything!

    • No, it looks like a cheap game show hostess halloween costume. She makes it look as good as it can, but the fit is a major problem.

    • kcarb1025

It looks like a bunch of Willy Wonka golden tickets were sewn together to make it.

I take that back. It looks most like my mother’s foil Christmas decorations from the 60s.

    • fallen_ikon

That’s part of the problem with super shiny gold fabric like that. If it doesn’t fit perfectly, it really does end up looking cheap.

    • miwome

Cosign. Also, the hair is really bugging me.

  • VicksieDo

The hair and makeup are great, so it’s soooo close to an IN for me.  If only it fit~~

  • Love her hair, and love how it’s almost definitely an intentional reference to the books. But I hate the dress. She’s gorgeous and this is just not really doing anything for her. It looks like it’s made out of cooking foil rather than anything a person should actually be wearing.

    • Farthingale

      “baked potato coture”

    • I’m glad I’m not the only one who immediately thought “girl on fire!”

  • TheLaurenJean

In! It looks great, and so what that it has a tiny buckling in the back? She looks great!

  • shirab

That is one busy gold dress, but at least she looks better in it than the model. I wonder if that black belt on the runway was an attempt to keep the whole thing from falling apart. She should have borrowed the less-fussy gold gown Stacy Whatshername, Clooney’s gal, wore to the Oscars.
So, I guess OUT. But it’s not her fault.

    • Spicytomato1

Ooh, I was thinking the model looked better in it, I think because of the edgier styling. The (mostly) “girl next door” hair and makeup don’t quite work with this for me.

      • I actually liked it on the model! I felt the styling gave it depth and thought the futuristic makeup really set it off.

  • Out. It’s probably just the material but it looks really really tight in the hips/butt area. She has a great body but this dress makes it look like she has “problem areas” which she clearly doesn’t.

  • Farthingale

This is a “stealth out” because at first glance, as you mentioned, it is a total “in”. The “out” sneaks up on you. The shot from the rear could be Esther Williams in a gold mermaid themed bathing suit, the cut across her back is so high and, er, widening.

I love the hair, even though the front could have been worked on just a touch more, the color, the fresh updo/braids (braids are a nod to the Hunger Games hairdos) are well conceived. I love the texture and touchability. JL could have used Cinna for this look.

    • Lizzyisi

I give it a stealth IN. First look is a WOW–In. Then you start to think about it and you notice the buckling of the back strap, and you start to wonder if it’s really an out, especially with the apparently casual hair. But then you bother to glance at the bun and then you notice how fluid and beautiful the skirt is across her hips and down into the train. The fit and construction of the bodice under her arms and around her shoulders (from the side generally) is gorgeous–half superheroine, half 30’s Hollywood dancing club. Add in the complicated hair (now that you’ve actually looked at it) and dark make-up/nails, and the minimalist jewelry so you’re not competing with the dress and you’ve sneaked back to IN.

I like the fabric better under the blue lights on the model, but it’s IN

  • No complaints about how she clearly rolled around on the floor of the limo and messed up her hair and makeup before coming out?

  • The designer should have done some modifications for her – I agree that even on the runway, this dress looks like it has issues.

I also think the hair is ruining the look.

  • drdirection

I am excited to watch her grow into an adult beauty.  She is in the Halle Berry dept of beauty for me.

  • She’s the girl on fire! She’s the Cornucopia! She’s Katniss…
IN. Simply because I am pumped for the movie and she is obviously playing to some book references.

    • Jessica Rowe

I’m glad you caught it!  The girl on fire!  I’m so excited.  I think it’s an IN.

    • StelledelMare

I thought this as well when I first saw the look. So much of it is just calling back to the book

    • AnaRoW

Yes that was my thinking as well. It’s an IN for me too.  The problems with the dress aren’t enough to make it an out for me especially since you have to keep staring at it to find them.

  • Out. A dress that over the top in fabrication doesn’t need the added zip of cut outs, razor back, and illusion netting. She ends up looking like a very high priced call girl. It’s an out for me, because the garment itself is flawed in its design, as the honorable T and Lo so wisely opined.

  • Covering my ears!!! Not listening to TLo!!! Lalalalala!

I like it. The dress pulls and tugs a bit, but it makes her look like a Goddess. On top of that, she looks sweet in some pics, but fierce as all get out in other pics. Her confidence makes all the flaws melt away.

  • sweetlilvoice

In….because she looks great despite the flaws. Makeup looks good too.

  • Agree, Cutie JLaw can totally pull off skintight gold lame, but this dress isn’t the right one for her bcuz of the craycray design.  Love the rest of her look (except I just want to push that one longer piece of escaping tendril back into the updo).

  • poggi

I like it, but I am having a similar reaction to TLo’s.  The more I look at it the more problematic it is.  It probably looks best when positioned carefully and worse when it has to move on  the runway or in real life.   But she seems to be working it, and if I stop looking at it now she’s still an IN.

  • J D

Yeah, her face looks stunning, but that dress reeks like my designer imposter perfume.

  • Laura Rizzo

i love the way the fabric looks on her….it moves in a pretty way and catches the light like one of the dresses in the book. plus her body, hair and makeup are fabulous. but the back (while sexy in shape) is so silly and messy that it ruins the dress for me.

  • Jennifer Hejtmánková

I think it would be fine if it didn’t have that train on it…otherwise I’d kill to look that good in a gold lamé dress….

  • Anathema_Device

You’re so right! It is very close, though. The fit ruins the dress, and her hair isn’t so great either. So, a baby Out. She’s working that dress as well as anyone could or should.

  • SapphoPoet

Yeah. Such a shame this dress doesn’t add up to the sum of its parts. As someone noted, the back construction is really problematic. The color–that sort of deep gold–is really good for her–she should look for a better dress in that color. Her makeup and hair are lovely and she has a wonderful figure–curvy in all the right places. Better luck next time.

  • Are you insane?? A total IN – that makeup is KILLING me, it’s so perfect. It was the WOW moment she needed for this big premiere.

  • DinaSews

OUT.  I’m sorry, but gold fabric always looks cheap to me.  Once again it looks like grown-up dress-up clothes.

    • halleygee

Agree – I was thinking it looks like a Barbie doll dress come to life.

  • Pennymac

This dress is a conundrum, no? Interesting, but also not. quite. right. I am willing to give it a pass on the fit issues, but am really thinking NASA LUNAR INSULATION re: the material. Love the make up and the almost too messy hair, though.

    in, lower case.

    • lizajane1776

       Bwahahaha! Lunar insulation! Good one!

I am also giving a small in. This isn’t her being in or out. This is her overcoming the flaws of the dress to bring it to the side of in. I see buckling on both the front and back, so that tells me the whole thing is supported by the shoulders and then the hips. That seems to be why it is so snug (yeah, right! Skin-tight) through the hips, in order to support the weight of the skirt.

Of course, Lunar Insulation is probably very light, so there goes that theory.

  • vanjar

One would think, that with the amount of panels used, it should’ve fitted better than it does. I blame the fabric/gold survival blanket. OUT!

    • CatherineRhodes

       That’s funny, survival blanket. Precisely!

  • SapphoPoet

BTW, TLo, how do you figure the IN vs OUT votes? Do you literally count through the posts to see how many votes there are? Or just get a general sense of how people feel? Just curious.

    • formerlyAnon

In the past they’ve said they literally read through and count.

      • random_poster

I wonder if they include the Likes in that count as well.  So, the post right below by Alli currently has 2 likes.  Does that mean 3 outs?

  • Oh Jenny, no. She has this great strong body shape that’s not really seen on the red carpet a lot these days and I haven’t really seen her in anything that does it justice – hopefully poledancing for this movie will turn up a WERQ or two.

  • StelledelMare

In for me. I think she looks great (though I’m a bit biased because I just adore her). The problem is in her eye makeup for me but that’s my only issue and it’s really a minor one. It’s just a tad too heavy, imo.

  • Scarlet39

    IN… Until she turned around.

  • gabbilevy

More bothered by the hair that looks like it’s falling out of its bun. But the dress is such an obvious “Girl on Fire” choice that I’m having a hard time faulting it… tepid IN, for chutzpah, and for outdoing the model.

    • MilaXX

heh! I guess this is her version of all those swan dress Natalie & Mila had to wear. They did feel the need to have a black carpet in honor of the movie.

  • Pants_are_a_must

It’s the dress. And the hair. And the fake tanning that makes her skin and hair exactly the same shade as the dress. OUT.

But hey, you’ve got 23948294289 more Hunger Games premieres to cover! She’ll surely get one of them right!

  • guestela

    Out. THat’s not *anyone’s* dress.

  • bluefish

How wonderful to see a pretty woman who is not starving herself.  The dress is dreadful front, side, and back.   Out.

  • BazoDee

OUT!! Bad color, makes her hair look bad, not a flattering shape. OUT

    • MilaXX

I wonder if the makeup/dress color would have looked better with her hair darker.

      • BazoDee

I think so! But I may be biased -I generally don’t like shiny gold dresses on blondes.

  • Spicytomato1

On the model, I think the dress looks very futuristic, which is perfect for THG. And I think the model’s funky eye makeup works because of that. On Jennifer, somehow the edgy vibe doesn’t translate. The makeup looks good but her hair is too soft-looking maybe?

  • serenitynow02

OUT. But I can use her dress on my windshield as a heat deflector this summer.

  • Sara__B

IN for the initial wow factor. I’ll bet when she hit that red carpet, with the flash bulbs blazing, everyone gasped. It’s definitely not perfect in fit and design, but it perfectly suits the Hunger Games premier.

    • random_poster

      Yes! This.

  • chelwi

I’m going to say IN, because I still think she looks beautiful. The eye makeup is a little heavy for my taste, but like you said, on first glance it works. So I’m not going to stare at it for too long and just say I like it.

  • I actually like it.

  • miagain

That is a stupid dress.  When your zipper needs a bridge between two worlds, something is very wrong!!  OUT

  • jw_ny

I must side with OUT, although at first glance of the front, I thought she was pulling it off.  I really don’t like the back…netting and the large cut out with the zipper strip down to the rear.  A side cutout would have been fine, but the back just looks so random as it is, in comparison to the sleekness of the front bodice.  I’m also not a fan of gold gowns in general…so ostentatious.  They must be done impeccably to look right…this misses the mark.

  • MzzPants

Cheap, tacky, and too tight.  OUT.  She’ll have to try again.

  • fringebenefit

In. It’s not perfect, and agree with the faults, but she’s still making it work.

  • Out, out, out. I think Jennifer Lawrence is awesome, but gosh, I hate this dress so much. It looks SO cheap. I hate the hair (the front – I like the back a lot, but the front ruins it) and make-up too. It’s probably because I like Jen so much that this is bothering me as much as it is. I really, really hate how she looks here.

  • brookeinmn

She gets an IN for me for the slamming bod and hair/makeup alone. It’s too bad the dress is made out of crap material with bad construction.

  • SewingSiren

Golden, fishtail, cut-outs, and sheer insets. Too much dress for anyone. Out.

  • Oh, this is tough. That dress is OUT, but her hair and makeup are IN. I think I just canceled myself out. :/

  • DinahR

IN!  Not just because I think we should cut a woman brave enough to wear this dress a little slack, but because she is working some book/movie references to excite her fans.  SMART girls always are IN.  Her character is the Girl on Fire and fashion was a large player in the book. I expect to see more golden and attention grabbing dresses from her while this movie rolls through the media.

I think this dress required a more finished hairstyle though?  That literally looks like my hair at 3pm when I’ve tried to create a bun or updo.

  • kolokOlchik

  • ChaquitaPhilly

OUT! Over-done dress and under-done hair!

  • julnyes

Despite the fit issues, I am going with an IN because I still think she looks gorgeous.

  • kentiesgirl

In. If any person at any event was gonna rock this it would be the girl on fire. I like that the hair is mussy too. She looks fierce.

  • MilaXX

OUT! It was fun watching so many of these kids have their first time on the RC and most of them got it right or at least okay. (BTW Miley Cyrus actually dressed her age!) This is a diva dress and regardless of how huge this movie makes Jennifer Lawrence, she just doesn’t give off diva vibes. I also hate the dark liner with this dress.

  • O Superman

    Totally IN.

  • I’m gonna go with “IN” because even though the dress is weird, it looks way better on her than on the model. Plus hair, makeup, and her overall look are great.

  • I think it’s fairly heavy, but she looks lovely, and that gold against her skin was a fabulous choice. I say IN.

  • crackineggs

Looks like wrapped up leftovers.  OUT. Her hair is pretty from the side view and the back though.

  • Sock McSockerson

IN.  The dress has problems but you can’t take your eyes off her.

  • Wow. She is a BEAUTIFUL girl! Stunning even. But you’re right. This dress just doesn’t work. Out.

  • Judy_J

From the waist up, she looks fabulous.  There is a wonky fit about the skirt, but it’s not bad enough to declare this an out.  So I say, IN with an asterisk.

  • elleg929

I just can’t do cutouts on dresses.  I think they are tacky/streetwalker.

  • Terence Ng

Out. Love her, but this needs polish. You’re so right about the fit, and it makes it all fall apart.

  • sagecreek

    Too Star Trek. Out.

  • I’m giving her an in, because she looks gorgeous… but the dress is bad.

  • Sobaika Mirza

I think she’s working the dress as best she can given its construction – it’s the hair I’m having issues with. From the back it’s beautiful (and a nice nod to the books) but it looks like bedhead from the front. With all the puckering in the fabric, the hair is making her look very sloppy indeed. OUT.

  • Sarah Tyrchniewicz

The back is awful! But the front is so fantastic I don’t mind it. Wish I could look that good in gold metallic!

  • Bozhi

Out.  And I just don’t know what to say.  I mean, what was she thinking?

  • I think she is rocking it. In!

  • PeggyOC

Out.  It’s mostly the dress.  But she gets a ding for trying to dress “thematically” to her movie (note how she matches the logo and the whole fire theme) and for that eye-liner.

  • Kayceed

In. A rare case in which the wearer’s charisma elevates the dress.

  • I’m going to have to go with Out. It needs the belt and her hair is a mess. It’s all about the detailing

  • RebeccaKW

I agree with the fit issues.  And the back construction is odd, as well as the netting.  But girl is working it.  I like the hair/makeup.  And the lack of jewelry works here, b/c the dress is so LOOK AT ME.  I guess I’m going with IN, b/c she looks good in spite of the dress’s flaws.

  • Greg Yoder

I like JLaw a lot, but I just don’t think gold metallic gown with side cutouts works in any situation where taste is desirable.  So, OUT.

  • Jessica O’Connell

I will never get behind a dress with side cutouts. Besides, too much eyeliner. OUT.

  • StrandedFashionista

This is needlessly hard for me to decide if it’s an in or an out. The idea of it is stunning and it’s ALMOST completely right… and then the details as you rightly pointed out aren’t right. OHHHHHHH- I’ll give it an IN for good intensions.

  • SeriousStyle

I think she looks fabulous.  In!!

  • kelsita421

she looks fierce. but that dress is just… no. OUT. (though, yes, total “girl on fire” per the book. still out.)

  • Oh dear. From the front it’s a big ol’ in for me, but then she turns around and it’s problems, problems, problems. But I think I’ll still give her the IN.

  • R. L.

I like the idea of it but the dress doesn’t fit right.  OUT.

  • NCDFan

    It looks uncomfortable too. OUT

  • Srw27

I don’t like that “ass train” on the dress but she looks stunning.  IN

  • tired_mommy

OUT all around. Hate the make-up and hair in front too (the bun in the back is kinda cool).

  • Patsye Peebles

Oh, come on, girl is staying true to her character the very best she can.  So many actresses abandon the character after they walk off the set, and she is trying to please the fans with that look.  From the front the hair looked sloppy, but not when you see the “bigger picture”.  And the overall effect is so dramatic it just has to be IN!!

  • IN. The dress has some issues but she doesn’t. Love her whole look and she is making that complicated thing look better than anyone else could.

  • sleepycat

I really like the dress but like you said it is really not working, OUT

  • mozzer0906

I agree that the dress is an out, it makes her look bottom heavy and we all know girlfriend has a slamming bod.  The fit is terrible.  Love her hair and makeup though.

  • love this dress for this event — it is perfect for the character she plays in the movie.

  • YolandaHawkins

It looks like a Project Runway overnight project.  The material looks cheap and the back construction is horrible.  OUT!

  • Fucking fierce as shit. Her body looks fabulous and she’s working it like she’s late on rent. IN.

  • Its kind of “old bible movie” queen.

  • CatherineRhodes

Two things: 1) designers, if your dress does not look good on the model coming down the runway, you need to take it back to the drawing board. 2) hair stylists, no matter how interesting the hairdo in the back, if the front looks like yoga hair, that is how it reads.

My summary: poorly-designed dress, yoga hair.

    Oh, and… OUT

  • AlexisPayne

Love her, love the hair and make-up, it is too bad that the dress just doesn’t fit right.
Can’t wait to see The Hunger Games!

  • I give it an IN! I think she looks great!

  • Cathy S

Out. It’s definitely the dress. Just terrible. It’s a shame though because she could have been fabulous. The dress let her down.

  • granddelusion

    My eyes! My eyes!

  • fiestyfashionfem

IN – I like it – she looks young and lovely.

  • Candigirl1968

  • TheOriginalLulu

Nope, you guys are nuts. She’s way in!

  • JimMcC

OUT. She’s stunning, but that dress looks cheeeeeap!

  • For me, her hair ruins the look. But I’ll give it an IN.

  • KC

I disagree with you guys. It isn’t perfect, but I think this is the case of a girl making the dress work and not the other way round. She looks smokin and I love the hair and makeup. The dress isn’t so bad on her, I agree about the fit and the bottom…and the back is weird but with a few tweaks it would be in TOTAL WERQ territory, so I give her a WHISPER IN. Or something like that, lol.

  • IN, though you do know a lot of shit.

  • slightlybitterkitten

The dress is tacky and bunchy and all of these things.  And, still, I love it.

  • Pannyx

I’m having more of a problem with back of the dress than the fit. It just looks really cheap to me. Definite out.

  • Kristy Evans

Whatevs, she looks smoking hot. IN.

  • formerlyAnon

Oh yes. It’s out. That dress is not meant to be seen from a distance less than 25 feet.

But I kind of like the Almost-Goldie (Hawn) circa 1970 look she’s got going on with her hair (front view only) and make-up. Just a little more exuberance in the hair.

  • Amanda Entwistle

I’m going to give it a reluctant IN.  I think that she has both the body and the persona to pull off a look like this, but the fit is off enough that it is distracting.  That said, I think her hair and makeup look great and the subtle reference to the book in both dress and styling is appreciated.

  • Joyce VG

OUT.  Can I really touch your hair?

  • The details are so very in. Love her hair, love the makeup, love the dress color/fabric. The only problem is the construction of the dress. If it had been a different gold metallic dress I’d be all over it. But this, much as I hate to say it, is an out.

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

Can you give her a WERQ and the dress an OUT? 🙂

  • I think that the idea of this dress has a lot to do with the character she plays in the movie, who is known as “the girl on fire”. There’s an important scene in the book/movie where she is presented to the people in what is literally a dress on fire, so maybe this was her way of connecting to her character. That said, I think she could have done the same thing but with a better fitting dress.

  • Gold lame` is never a good choice for a young woman.  Out.

  • Aly Light

This is one of those cases where I had no clue what y’all thought was wrong with the look based on the pictures, and every single point you made left me thinking, “So what?”. I think she looks fab. I mean it. IN, and there’s no two ways about it.

  • marilyn

In.  Too tight in the stomach, but who cares?  It is stunning overall, and she can carry  it off.  On the verge of being a costume, but not quite there.   Vegas style glamour, and we need a little of it at times!

  • benjamin478

    IN. she’s a movie star.

  • I think she looks fab. The dress has problems, for sure, but I can’t stop looking at/admiring the photos. If she gets that reaction from me in gold lame, she’s IN.

edited because DISQUS had a hissy fit over the accent mark over the “e” in lame

  • She looks horribly uncomfortable in it and I hate her bangs, so OUT. Digging the ridiculous embellished Ren-Faire bun, though.

  • IAmJ

I love the front and hate the cheap-looking back, but her hair and makeup are gorgeous and I’m in a charitable mood today so I’ll give her a first-glance IN.

  • janetjb

    So out.

She deserved better, everyone with a movie premiering deserves better.

  • OUT.  the dress is a nice color on her, but the fit issues are a problem.  i must say that i hate her hair, though.  it reminds me of the curly tendrils i so tried to rock on prom night but were bedeaggled and straight before we even left the restaurant to go to the actual prom.

  • altalinda

Out.  She looks like she’s playing dress-up.

  • In which the bitchy Parsons gay explains construction to T Lo, part I’ve lost track.

The bottom half doesn’t need the top half to be holding it up–given the fit, and the point at which it hits (right around her natural waist) that skirt would stay up even if you hacked off the bodice.

No, the problem here is solely that center panel, which is just a tad too long for Ms. Lawrence’s body–if the skirt were weighing the dress down, the fabric would be pulling vertically, and the back would be riding up, but because it’s bulging horizontally at the front waist (and the back strap (?) is bulging out as well) it can just be derived that the dress’ proportioned were not altered to specifically address the differing length of her torso.  Plus, that abdominal panel needed a dart in the side to keep it from ballooning out.

  • sockandaphone

whatever, I ADORED this dress. It has some fitting issues but damn it makes a good first impression.  IN FOR ME.

  • SatelliteAlice

Out.  The fabric just doesn’t look right on her or the model.  Her hair and makeup look great though.

  • The gown looks fine, it’s the hair I don’t like. But still in.

  • belfebe

OUT.  The dress looks like a Project Runway reject.  Pity.  She’s beautiful.

  • Kyle Crawford

I comfortable declaring this one a crime against humanity.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I too thought she looked incredible until I noticed the cutouts. Her eyes are piercing with that makeup. Sadly, OUT.

  • Zaftiguana

IN. You bitches know shit, but I think there’s more right here than wrong (oy, the gym hair), and the stuff that’s right is very right.

  • JimiG

    God, no. Vegas stripper. Out.

  • I love the dress, but agree that the only way it’s going to look good on anyone is if they plan on standing still all night, posing. IN! because it’s not her fault.
Also, I still want to touch your hair.

  • NasserShaheen

Out. Quite possibly the stupidest dress I’ve seen anyone wear to their own premiere.

  • saanrio

OUT.  I am so over the cut-outs phase, and that much shiny gold is just too much.  Though I will concede that she could have managed it if the design had been better.

  • lesmaha

out. I don’t like anything about this look: Color, hair, shape of dress.

IN. Because I did the gay gasp for all of the photos before I put on my TLo second look goggles and noticed all the fit issues. I love her make-up and even the hair that I would usually hate, and I think the overall effect is IN. The fourth photo of her is sublime. And her butt looks glorious.

  • In! She looks amazing, I think the issues are small enough that they don’t really detract from how striking the look is.

  • Out. The dress is not good, but honestly, I’m not happy about her hair either.

  • Out.  Girl, that’s not your tinfoil.  Seriously, what the heck were they thinking at Prabal Gurung?  The fabric is too heavy for the dress structurally, and the seaming on the back side of the skirt is really suffering because it’s carrying the entire weight of the skirt. That “tether” thing down the back is misbehaving as well because again the fabric is too heavy and stiff.  It even looks bad on the model, another concept gown that barely works on the runway and not  at all IRL.  I agree that no one could wear this.

  • Love the hair & makeup, but the dress itself is making this out.

  • Julie Fountain

  • hair messy. cutouts weird. OUT.

  • Yeah, something really wrong with that dress. Poor dress.  OUT>

  • DeborahLipp

In. It’s not perfect but fuggit, it’s great anyway.

  • Theresa Carey

This is actually more of a dress for her character in the movie.  You’ll understand once you see the flick, or if you read the book.

    • birdhead

Yeah, the first thing I thought when I saw this was “the girl on fire”. I, uh, can’t wait to see what that is going to actually look like.

  • Out! The belt might have staved off the Bond girl mod flavor, but it’s really sort of a ticky-tack dress, period.

  • alyce1213

    OUT, totally OUT.
Huge movie, huge role, huge career prospects, and she blew the huge RC moment.

  • afabulous50

    Hideous.  Out.

  • megohd

She has the most beautiful eyes!

  • AnnPopovic

I love it, IN. Girl on Fire, and, she looks electric when she moves. If there’s a moment where it doesn’t look like it fits, it’s the photographer’s fault.

  • cleep1000

    She has beautiful eyes.

  • ccm800

OUT! If that body can’t wear the dress who the hell can?
I don’t see how this weighs down so much with that industrial strength support beam in the back – WTH?

  • I still think she looks amazing. So I’m giving her an in.

  • greatscoutm

Whatever the odds are of finding a gold dress that fits perfectly, they were not in her favor.

  • KathKo

Well, she did get the attention so, good job, Jenny.
I wonder how you are doing in that movie because I actually had to google her name to find who she plays in the game.
So, also good job to the costume makers, make up artists and hair dresser because I wasn’t able at all to tie her up with the few screenshots of Katniss we get from the previews.

  • howdoilook

I think it looks better on her than on the model. Snaps up from me! IN.

  • AllisonRae

The fit may not be great, but I still think she looks fabulous!!! IN!

  • Out. Jiffy Pop.

  • Mexxoo

It’s possible that the lower half might look better if she had been doing any pose other than “hands on hips.”  Still, I give it an IN.

  • librarygrrl64

    Sorry, but….IN!!!

  • holdmewhileimnaked

needs the belt. pulls the rumply business together & loses a lot of the sense of ill fitness. didnt necessarily have to be that belt, but needs one or another to make it fall properly. then again, the model really didnt need to be wearing that eyeshadow, which, unusual as it is, pulls all the focus from a gold lamé dress. so theres that.

did i mention i set my keyboard on fire? no cigarettes, no alcohol, no drugs. it’s been that kind of year. actually, no: it’s been way worse. anyway.

  • reddhouston

In….I think she still looks beautiful even with the problems

  • reddhouston

In….I think she still looks beautiful even with the problems

  • Vickiefantastico

In! She looks fantastic. Normally, I think all cut-outs are unflattering, but it looks great on her. And the buckling is not that bad.

  • Vickiefantastico

In! She looks fantastic. Normally, I think all cut-outs are unflattering, but it looks great on her. And the buckling is not that bad.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

    I still say IN.

  • NBC presents an all new revamp of an all time favorite…. SOLID GOLD!:THE HUNGER GAMES EDITION

  • Can I say IN from the front only?

  • I think she looks great – she is 21 or whatever, she has the bod, and it’s her movie, she can get away with it.

  • Pterodactyl111

    IN. She looks fabulous.

  • ballerinawithagun

  • Louise Bryan

I think it makes her look sort of buff and warrior-like.  Like when she’s being paraded around the capital before the games begin.  So I will give it an IN, since it’s in character.

  • RoxieRider

In for a killer first impression.

  • ThaliaMenninger

If it were silver, she would look like a baked potato. So she’s a gold-foil potato instead of aluminum. A potato is still a potato.

  • TSkot

Just plain ugly, anyway you look at that dress.  OUT.
(Her hairstyle isn’t doing her any favors, either.)

  • Also, hairdo is too disheveled. OUT.

  • S R

OUT.  That dress would be amazing if it weren’t for the awful cut-outs.

  • giiiirrrr

It looks like a dress that doesn’t photograph well because it moves around on her body, giving the appearance of pulling and gapping but actually falling back in to place as she moves.  I am guessing that in person it is stunning (can’t prove it, tho’).  Also, while I don’t like illusion netting, the purpose of the netting here is to visually and subtly widen her shoulders and it does that perfectly.  Her hair and makeup are a nice combination of dramatic and relaxed.  I love that it’s all so not Katniss, just the way Emma Watson is so not Hermoine on the red carpet.

    (In case anyone doubted, IN.)

  • Allison Woods

It’s…’s not her fault. The dress is way overdesigned, and then also in a way, underdesigned. You follow me?

  • bitterk

    I miss the belt.  OUT.

  • demidaemon

In addition to everything mentioned here, the dress color also seems more muted (if you can say that about a glittery gold gown) than it was on the runway. The dress is an OUT, no doubt, for any woman.

  • i can’t help thinking a black belt similar to the runway look and more defined hair would have helped; it certainly would make the overall look less sloppy.

  • aristida_girl

IN, I think the dress is fantastic, all pulling and buckling aside, and she is wearing the hell out of it.

  • IN!!

    she’s the girl on fire

  • I think she looks as good as it’s possible to look in that dress. Not that that’s saying much.

    Ehhh. IN because she’s trying?

  • lrhoff

    Good call, boys.

  • Sophie Collier

IN.  She’s werkin’ it and looks fabulous.  Heather, LOOK AT HER BUTT.

  • Gorengirl

In. I love it and she looks beautiful!

  • AWStevens

She looks like a Barbie in a gold dress!  LOVE IT!  INNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!

  • SVLynn

I agree, I think the gold was intended to get fans excited to see Katniss on the screen. She is such a beautiful girl, it just has such a poor fit with that stiff fabric.. With all the insane attention this movie is getting, seems pretty dumb her stylists wouldn’t have noticed how weird it fits and hangs on her.

  • I also think that the choice to go with metallic gold with her blonde hair was probably not the best choice. She’s so blindingly yellow it kind of hurts my eyes. A darker metallic might have been more complementary.

  • IN. She looks amazing.

  • nancymae

In. Remember, she’s Katniss, the Girl on Fire!

  • Judih1

  • The fit is awful but she still werks the shit out of it. Props to her. She looks stunning and way more put together than La Cyrus

  • RzYoung

Hmm, i appreciate your concerns, but I still think she looks fierce as fuff so I’m giving it an IN

  • VioletFlame

IN. She looks amazing, and as long as she keeps posing and moving, Jennifer will get oohs and aahs and snaps with very few noticing the details TLo so accurately pointed out. (OUT for the designer, for designing a fabulous only on paper dress no one can wear!)

  • oohsparkley!

The dress has issues.  But she’s still IN.

  • in! hard to dress to pull of but i think she looks good in it, wish she would have kept the belt though

  • Grace Ritt

  • For me IN!

  • cheesepuff74

  • Nicole

I absolutely loved the colors, hair, everything except atleast change the dress structure.
