In or Out: Carrie Underwood in Oscar de la Renta

Posted on March 01, 2012

Color us SHOCKED, darlings.

Carrie Underwood attends the Nordstrom Symphony fashion show at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville in an Oscar de la Renta dress.

Oscar de la Renta Spring 2012 Collection/Model: Constance Jablonski

Because we normally hate what she wears in public and we really love this look. Like, REALLY love it; possible personal best for her. You see, like so many starlets, Carrie Underwood is allergic to color and has a tendency to only go out in gowns that are white, silver, or some beigey neutral. For a relatively pale-skinned blonde, it made for a succession of looks that were either boring or unflattering, washing her out and making her look, at best, like a glamorous bride wearing too much makeup and jewelry.

But THIS, darlings. This is the kind of thing that makes T & Lo so very happy after literally years of bitching about the same thing. We really enjoy the pretense that these little attention whores actually listen to us, but the fact of the matter is, there’s a “color moment” happening on the red carpet right now and like all red carpet “moments,” (or, in fact all moments, period), this will be short-lived. We give this one an unreserved IN but we have to give the Bitter Kittens something to do or else they’ll destroy the furniture, so we’re turning this over to you, darlings.

Vote Now!

IN! Gorgeous and colorful!

OUT! Enh.

On the Oscars red carpet, Meryl’s gold gown was voted IN, Michelle Williams super-twee red gown was voted OUT, and Rooney Mara’s corpse bride dress was vehemently argued for and against, with the final vote coming down to OUT.

Hate the hair, but I guess I’ll side with you on this one.  She looks great.

(Still, start trying to convince her to do something different with her hair.)

In, but I’m still looking for some color. All I see is black. As far as I’m concerned, black is not a color.

  • DebbieLovesShoes

LOVE.  So much better with her skin and hair.   She looks gorgeous!  Much more classy dame and much less Grand Ole Opry.

  • IN.  A pretty dress and a big improvement for her.

  • I’ll give Carrie an in. Though switching from pale non colors to a dark non color doesn’t seem that huge a leap. Sure it’s got interesting hints of deep blue in there, but the overall effect is black. Still, she looks good and the darker tones suit her well.

  • mhleta

I wasn’t sure about it until I saw the runway shot. The dress looks great on the model but the neckline is all fakakta on Carrie. What happened? Not enough cowboy to fill the hat?

    • Snorting into my hand! I will have to remember this one.

    •  bonus points for use of “fakakta” !

    • Joyce VG

I agree the neckline on Carrie is fakakta. Woah. Great word.  And she doesn’t have enough cowboy to fill the hat either.  Wow. Great zinger!  But an IN because look! she’s wearing color.

    • quiltrx

I think it’s the lack of an appropriate undergarment that’s causing the problem here.  She’s not overly busty, but she generally fills her bodices much better than this.  Looks like her boobs aren’t speaking to each other.

  • The fit on the bodice seems a bit off, doesn’t it? It looks a little more drapey than it does on the model.

She does look great, though. IN.

    • SapphoPoet

      I like the drapey, though.

      • ampg

Me, too.  It gives the top more visual interest. I say IN.

      • I don’t hate it, but having seen the way it sits on the model, I think I prefer it that way.

  • kingderella

dig the ‘oil on water’ effect, and the drape around her bust, which looks even better than on the model. not loving the belt. its an IN for me, although i probably dont love it as fiercly as you guys seem to. its a good look, not more and not less.
gotta say, though, isnt it strange that youre pointing at a mostly black look as an example for colour?

  • It’s draping over her cleavage kind of oddly and the belt seems askew (or is that a thing now?), but otherwise she looks lovely. IN

  • Ennovi_R

  • Anathema_Device

In. She looks very pretty, fashionable, and elegant here. (Even though that fabric reminds me a little bit of the glitzy table coverings you get at the discount party store).

  • In!  Love the color and the dress in general.

  • dress_up_doll

It’s a striking dress and the girl is workin’ it.

  • Scarlet39

    In.  Full stop.

  • TheLaurenJean

Going with out. She looks so messy!

  • howdoilook

  • I’m on the fence about the hair and belt, but I can’t deny this is IN.

  • IN.  She looks great.

  • crackineggs

In.  Although she seems to look just a tad uncomfortable – maybe she’s not used to the plunging necklines?  She should consult with JLo on that.  But then again, maybe not.

    • Judih1

Totally agree with everything you said! In and she should consult with JLO for plunging neckline tips

  • FashionShowAtLunch

Maybe it’s her pose, but the neckline seems way off.

Regardless, she looks great and I love the dress.  Kudos for changing the look up.

  • fireontiger

This is fantastic. Consider that an emphatic IN!

  • lalahartma

  • improvement? yes. in? NO.

  • Out for the mere fit on the chest.  Stop being such a prude.  You look more ridiculous trying to cover up what little you got. Hair looks like shit too.  Overall it’s more than an “Enh”…its a full on OUT: fuggly.

  • Little_Olive

    Great color.

The fabric looks highly flammable (I bet it’s not).

  • DinaSews

IN.  But would have loved a pop of color with the purse!  (That’s toooo much leap from where she was, huh?)

  • EC

    Think she looks hot.

Wondering if you’ve seen Hulu’s Fashion Fund and what you think of it. It’s been my fashion competition fix in a boring PR year. But how do I really know what to think if you’re not blogging it?1?1?

  • ChaquitaPhilly

Love the dress, but not the belt even if it IS the original model.
But it’s still an IN! Great dress.

  • Mariah J

Wow this is not something I would normally like but somehow it just works. Definitely IN

  • Patricia Hoffman

I would like it, if it didn’t look like she was trying to cover herself up in the photos. I think she looks massively uncomfortable in it.

  • In.  I love the color on her.

  • Seems like she’s playing dress-up; the dress and pose don’t quite fit with the face and hair, although that could be just my pre-conceived notions of Carrie Underwood coloring my view.  Anyway, got to go with IN.

  • SewingSiren

Well, I thought the Corpse Bride was the best looking girl at the Oscars. This one is in too. The dress is pretty and so is she, but she always looks a little uncomfortable in the skin she’s in.

  • BrooklynBomber

Not only in, but bonus points for not wearing the terrible shoes shown on the model.

  • schadenfreudelicious

interesting color, tho i agree with the kittens about the wonky neckline…now if she would just do something about her prom hair…a conservative IN

  • Cheri Lee

Her accessories are a bit weak for me and her posture is killing me. The dress is beautiful though and I am giving it the IN rather than her.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I still hate her hair, but otherwise, IN.  That is one gorgeous gown, and I like the shoes.

  • Vickiefantastico

    Love it! In!

  • Amy Ellinger

IN, but my word, she looks uncomfortable.

  • Sunshine16

  • TieDye64

IN, but not quite sharing your enthusiasm. While it’s leaps and bounds above what she normally wears, and it’s a relief the dress isn’t a pale non-color, but this isn’t exactly bursting with color. Dark and dramatic is definitely more striking, though.

  • Pannyx

I’m all for color (Yay color!), but I just really hate this dress. A big old OUT from me.

  • Aly Light

I particularly like the belt on the dress- it lends some cowgirl style to a princess dress that suits her image. IN.

  • Bo Bice was robbed.

  • True, the hair is still a bit honky tonk prom-ish, but I agree that this is possibly a personal best.  IN!

  • AnaRoW

OUT. I like the dress but not on her. It’s like she decided the dress was too sexy so styled it to keep her as far away from that as possible. And she looks stiff and uncomfortable.  I’ll admit that the color (or absence of color, actually) does look good on her.

  • Kayceed

Love the oil-slick color, and love the hair (it could go even bigger for me, as I love me some big hair on country singers). The bodice is problematic. The deep-v on the model is very nice – it has turned into a weird elongated-u on Miss Carrie, and it looks like she has pulled on the tulle to cover up her decolletage. Coupled with the caved-in chest posture, she is giving herself away as very uncomfortable in this lovely frock. Poor dear. Out.

  • LOVE it on her, though she looks uncomfortable.

  • VioletFem

I don’t love it, but I can’t find much wrong with it either. She looks good. IN

  • I would like this dress so much better if they actually fit the bodice to her, like on the model. As it is, it just looks like a mess, and that she is wearing a dress too big. So while the addition of color does give her points, it’s still an OUT for me.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

IN, she looks fabulous, definitely the best I’ve seen on her. Love that the big blingy belt still has that “buckle bunny” vibe.

  • Jessi03

IN!  Worried she’s going to have a wardrobe malfunction, though.

  • jw_ny

I feel like destroying the furniture only because I must give Carrie Underwear an IN.  🙁

  • In, love the dress!

  • piecesofconfetti

    In. Very pretty.

  • butterflysunita

    Easy IN.

  • Judy_J

    Girl looks good.  IN.

  • It’s awfully shiny, but for her = IN

  • CQAussie

Gotta love it, she looks fab – IN.

  • BayTampaBay

  • How lovely! Definitely an “in.” I’ve always thought that she is a beautiful woman, this really makes her shine.

  • In. She looks pulled together and very pretty.

  • 3boysful

  • NasserShaheen

In to the in! She looks ravishing.

  • Jessica O’Connell

Her look is also not screaming out “Country Music Star,” for once. For that alone I would have given her an IN.

  • aristida_girl

    IN..she looks great!

  • kolokOlchik

    So IN!!

  • Larkin21

Not crazy about the sheer skirt but she looks really great. IN!

  • karena10

In.  Not really colorful, but definitely flattering and a step in the right direction.

  • NCDFan

  • alyce1213

I’m not fully understanding what’s going on on top (it looks kind of haphazard and the model’s top looks better) or her choice of necklace, but IN, because it’s really pretty overall.

  • Sara__B

On my monitor, this dress is an iridescent black, NOT a color. She looks pretty, but uncomfortable, which may explain the fakakta (my new word for the day) neckline. I’m not liking the hairdo, either, but IN anyway. She and the dress are both pretty.

  • I wonder what the fabric looked like in person — it photographs cheap, cheap, cheap. I have to give her an OUT for that.

  • saanrio

IN.  Hair not quite right, and her pose could use a little work, but it is nice to see her getting away from the more ‘virginal’ colors.

  • PeggyOC

In.  Love what she’s done with the bodice to make it scoop necked, but not a dip to Hootertown.

  • janetjb

  • formerlyAnon

But there’s nothing egregiously wrong with it, just no fireworks. And she looks pretty. So in. A rather underwhelmed in.

I’m a little sad about the Corpse Bride vote, but having seen the back of Michelle Williams’ dress since I voted, I’m very o.k. that that one went against me.

  • No enh here. IN.

  • kimmeister

Colorful?  It still looks like black to me.  I don’t like the way she switched up the draping around the bust, but overall I’ll give her an IN.

  • belfebe

IN, but the chest fits a little funky.  I like the more fitted version on the model.

  • Not a fan of hers, but she looks spectacular! IN!

  • Pretty good for her, but I hate that one Playboy Wife hairstyle she always has. Grudgingly IN, because she is a pretty girl in a pretty dress.

  • Definitely an IN!  I agree that it’s personally one of her best, if not THE best.  And look at the bright smile!  It’s like she knows that TLo are going to give her an unabashed ‘Huzzah’, and she’s ecstatic about that.

  • MarissaLG

    IN she looks great!

  • thebitterkitten

not a big fan of the sheer but she totally won me on this look!  IN!

  • NurseEllen

So very IN, she looks fab.  Congratulations, Carrie!

  • pottymouth_princess

I am as pleasantly shocked as TLo. She’s young, has a slammin’ bod, but I guess the Country image prescribes her to the boring side to keep her image sweet and pure. I’ve hated her musically since AI (the tapping on the mike drove me bonkers), but never denied she’s a lovely girl who finally looks like a grown-up here. Well done, Carrie.

  • MilaXX

IN, a little too much train, but definitely a step up.

  • Vaniljekjeks

In.  I don’t know who she is, but this dress is fantastic on her.  It’s almost a WERQ.  Almost.

  • lrhoff

Very nice — perfect for a symphony event, too.

  • IN. She looks great!

  • serenitynow02

Since this is indeed a personal best for the lady, I’ll vote her IN.

  • Snailstsichr

    pretty. IN.
And, when she’s done with the ring on her right hand, she can send it to me.

  • BeeBeauNYC

I’ll give the gal an IN.

  • malvernite

out. the footstance and scrunched in shoulders (to stop her boobs falling out?) makes me think she’s a bit afraid of the dress.

  • mjude

  • LOVE THIS DRESS. Definitely IN (but would a vibrant color kill you, girl?)

  • finnishmaria

I’m not convinced about the necklace or the shoes, but I also think she looks really nice. I really like the belt. IN!

  • MoHub

The titscrepancy is making me nuts!

  • IN.  She usually looks hiddy, but I dunno, she’s kinda … hot in that blue dress.  I feel unclean.

  • reddhouston

In…nothing much else to say good or bad about it

  • In.  I don’t love it as much as T-Lo do, but IN.

  • Patricia Gillett

In, but stand up straight, young lady!

  • She looks great, but I’m shocked.  I had no idea there was an actual red carpet event at the Schermerhorn.

  • AlexisPayne

Hate the hair, make-up is ok, I’m not liking how the neckline sits on her. The dress looks navy or black to me.
Improved but not wowing me. Out.

  • MzzPants

    Perfect.  IN.

  • unbornfawn

This bitter kitten gets up, stretches, glances over, mews, IN, curls up and goes back to sleep.

    • Qitkat

Can I snuggle IN with you? Surely two bitter kittens are better curled up than one.

      • unbornfawn

Absolutely. Bitter kittens are always better in pairs!

        • Qitkat

My husband and I are thinking of adopting a pair of kittens from the shelter where we got our last kitty, who went to the great sandbox in the sky over a year ago. We’ve had to come to terms with his loss as we had him for 19½ years, so it’s taken a while, but I think we’re ready. Now for the hard part, coming up with names. Well, the really hard part will be choosing the right kittens 🙂

          • unbornfawn

That is so sweet. I hope you find a terrific pair of kittens. Once you meet them. It will be much easier to figure out their names!

          • Qitkat

I think one of their nicknames must be the Bitter Kitten Twins. We always have lots of nicknames for our cats. Stay tuned…

          • unbornfawn

            Love it. Keep us posted!

  • holdmewhileimnaked

it’s OdlR, it’s gorgeous. it looks better in the rarefied reality of being photographed, worn by something of a person person on a red carpet rather than in the rarefied atmosphere of a runway worn by a model. very good.

btw, i think sometimes they do listen to you. i’m not sure. but this is a big big website now. the one that startled me was the hair of viola davis. although, sadly, i have to temper this comment by noting that i dont read any other celeb stuff anywhere [other than infrequently on jezebel] so i dont know if any- & everyone else has also been saying ditch the wig. but i wouldnt doubt she heard it here first.

  • S R

    In. She looks gorgeous.

  • IN. Hate the shoes, but the rest of the look is killer. It’s finally something other than “country starlet”.

  • Ann M. Erickson

the neckline is weird. It makes her look concave? otherwise, in.

  • newtonGOTbeaned

    I want it

  • In_Stitches

With the soccer mom hair and beauty pageant smile, I’m thinking this is a “girl, this isn’t your dress” moment.  It’s a great dress, but it has a dark sultriness to it that just doesn’t work on her.  I’m not gonna give her an out for it, but I don’t love it.  She’s squeezes by with an “IN”.

  • blixtme

    Color! Resounding IN!

  • Lauren Maier

Swanky.  Not really invested in the dress or the starlet, so it’s not a very enthusiastic IN, but and IN nonetheless.

    Definitely swanky.

  • cleep1000

That neckline makes it an  OUT.

  • Noelle Haland

So I guess the color is a very navy blue…?  It almost looks black. Either way, she looks great. IN.

  • Lisa

OUT.  It’s just so weird and bunchy looking.  I can’t give her an in just because it’s a radical departure for her.

  • warontara

    Oooh. Love it! IN!!

  • altalinda

    Yes, in.

  • amanda crow

I’ll say IN, but I feel like she looks uncomfortable in it.

  • marilyn

Out.  Boring.  She looks like Miss Kitty on Gunsmoke.  Where are the feathers sticking out of her hair?  Too bad this is an improvement.  She has a nice face and a good figure.

  • IN… it’s a step in the right direction and I’m encouraging it even if the dress looks like it was made out of shiny trash bags.

  • Pterodactyl111

  • Her hair is a mess (that’s saying something coming from me. I’m a big fan of messy hair), but everything else is fabulous. A big IN

I’d kill to have that dress.

  • ThatPeterG

    IN. Definitely IN.

  • loverungay

    She looks great!

  • giiiirrrr

That fabric looks suspiciously like shiny, velvet upholstery, but I like the way CW’s wearing it.  IN.

  • harleydear

  • mhlmh

    IN. Very pretty.

  • Definitely in.

  • Definitely in.

  • benjamin478

but what about jessica chastain’s in or out?
    carrie’s in. she looks great.

  • Out out out out out out!  That fabric is the tackiest, shiniest pile of ugly!  Ugh!  That’s the stuff you buy in the flatfold area at Jo-Ann to make curtains for your first apartment – polyester crystal organza.  I have no doubt it’s some sort of high end silk, but if it photographs as polyester crystal organza?  That’s an out!  How embarrassing for her.

  • TheOtherChristina

I actually think she is one of the few who successfully works the hell out of the white/gold/champagne looks. I’m not against her shaking it up, but I think I hate this dress.

  • quiltrx

I think she’s SO beautiful anyway, and she’s really serving up some sophistication here.  IN.

  • In, she looks fabulous!

  • PeaceBang

    She looks lovely. In.

  • pokokpuding

In! And I would not have thought that she of all people could pull off this dress.

  • snarkykitten

are you blind? it’s pooling around her lack of boobs making her chest look weird

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

  • Kirsten Henry

    YES in so many ways

  • tinyredlocks

In. But what I really love and covet are the shoes on the model. Love. Want. Love.

  • Much better than the” Kountry Kutie” look she normally goes for. IN.

  • It doesn’t fit correctly, and it’s a weird length: OUT

  • Bozhi

IN.  I’m no Carrie fan, but this looks really great.

  • StrandedFashionista

Looks better on the model, but this is the best she’s ever looked. IN.

  • In. That said, the neckline on Underwood is weird compared to the neckline on the model.

  • allisankelly

Best I’ve seen her look…including the horrid shit they dress her in for that music award show she co-hosts seemingly every year. Plus her husband is kicking ass on my fantasy hockey team!

  • Just doesn’t suit her as well as it suited the model. Color is not enough. That neckline is just weird on her. OUT.

  • JaneDC

A gorgeous dress! Love how it moves on the runway shot. It doesn’t look as good on Underwood, but it’s still an IN.

  • in

  • SapphoPoet

IN. But I wouldn’t call this a color. I would have left off the necklace; it looks rather insignificant next to all that wonderful fabric. I think she should have just let the neckline be the ornament. LOVE the belt detail.

  • sagecreek

    In. She looks lovely.

  • tsid2012

I’ll give it an IN just because it is a HUGE improvment on her usual blandness.  But what is going on with the neckline on her?  It is a simple deep vee on the model but seems rather askew on her.  And hate the necklace, this dress really should have a great pair of earrings like the runway model and no necklace.

  • Can we turn over the furniture anyway?  Oh, and IN.

  • sid123

    ewwww  shiny….like cheap curtain sheers.

  • miwome

I’m really bothered by the way the bodice is lying, or falling, whatever, on her. It’s very different, and far less flattering, than the way it lies on the model. Is she not broad-shouldered enough? What happened there?

It’s bothering me enough that I’ll say OUT. I like the color and the textile, but somehow the overall effect is really messy to me.

  • MissFern

  • Eva_baby

IN.  But only because the dress is pretty, not because she is wearing it well or anything.  As a matter of fact, she doesn’t do the dress justice at all.

  • TheOriginalLulu

I can’t believe it! Usually she looks either ridiculously tacky or completely washed out. Not loving the hair, but this is definitely an improvement.

  • Is this how Carrie does edgy? If so, I’ll give it a pass for something different. IN.

  • random_poster

IN.  Love the look on her.

  • PhillipWilde

    Very much IN.

  • In!

  • Sophie Collier

It doesn’t seem to fit right.  Maybe because she’s slumping or something but it doesn’t look like the same dress the model is wearing.  And sorry to say, I kind of hate the skirt.

  • bitterk

    Gorgeous and Colorful

  • Fab. IN

  • Hate the hair. And it’s like she’s drowning in oil. Enh.

  • R. L.

    Love it!

  • In, but I’m not nuts about how the neckline is sagging. Pretty dress though. If I didn’t see it on the model, the neckline probably wouldn’t have bothered me.
