In or Out: Ashley Greene in DKNY

Posted on March 30, 2012

We like this. But do we like-like it or just like it? Walk with us.

Ashley Greene visits Macy’s Herald Square in New York City.

DKNY Pre-Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Johanna Gronholm

Around these parts, we talk a lot about how clothes change when they’re photographed; how going from 3 dimensions to 2 sometimes radically changes the way we perceive a look. We bring this up now because we’d really love to have seen what this looks like in person. We can’t quite trust the colors. We love a tone-on-tone look but either these colors are too close together or not close together enough, if that makes any sense – and going by these pictures, of course.

Aside from those reservations, we quite like it. It’s got a slight late ’70s vibe to it (except for the skirt length) and we can’t help but love it when a gal can rock a leather skirt.

There’s no excuse for the matchy shoes, though. We’re still bitches about that.

Vote Now!

IN! She looks like she works at the same office as Dolly, Lily, and Jane – and that’s FABULOUS.

OUT! The colors make my eyes hurt and leather skirts are the work of Satan.

Mireille Enos’ ’70s bathroom wallpaper was voted OUT. Also, no one plans on watching The Killing.

I like this a lot for some reason. The skirt looks better on AG than it does on the model, and AG’s hair really works with this look.  The matchy shoes aren’t the best choice, but they’re acceptable.

    • mandy rees

Agreed!  Can’t figure out what it is, but the skirt looks fantastic on AG and just meh on the model.
Oh yeah and the matchy shoes are no good, but nevertheless…

  • PastryGoddess

I like the outfit. The matchy shoes are no good.  And for god’s sake Ashley, stand up straight and show some sass!  You are pretty, rich, thin, and wearing thousands of dollars of free clothes.

  • NurseEllen

Leather is NOT the work of Satan but she does not look good.  OUT.

  • Out. This is the textbook definition of borrrringggg.

    • Lilak

Gotta agree.  Plus a corollary: If I can easily arrange a reasonable facsimile of an outfit at one of my little regional department stores, then the celebrity/designer hasn’t impressed me much.

    • That’s what I don’t like about it. Although the blouse is fab and I do love a leather skirt, ultimately it’s just a skirt and a blouse. It looks unfinished, and she needs something else, e.g., tights in a complementary would help to pull everything together.

The skirt is maybe hitting a little high on her, which makes her look short-waisted. And, as much as I love that blouse, the color is doing her no favors. Her skin looks grey.  I like the shoes, and don’t mind that they’re matchy. And, my god, she has gorgeous hair.

All in all, she looks like a receptionist in a high-end hair salon. OUT

  • Alisa Rivera

I love this like a big lovey thing and if I were even ten years younger I’d blow out the credit card and buy it. IN.

  • You guys are my new fav website. I think I love you.. lol

  • LOVE the skirt. Of course, I’m really into leather skirts, velvet pants, and turtlenecks right now (it seems so cold today!).

  • I wish she had stuck with the model’s shoes–those are fabulous.

  • It’s alright…borderline meh. It needs some SERIOUS accessories to oomph the look.

  • Skirt up she looks great, but from the skirt down, NO…she could have done a kicky sandal with no hosiery and been an in…it makes it look heavy..OUT

  • sarahofalessergod

I really don’t like the top.  Love the skirt, but the top is throwing it off for me.  If the color was different — maybe black or ivory or even yellow — I could stomach it, but I feel like these colors and items belong to separate outfits.  OUT.

  • It looks great, the colors, ruffle and leather skirt, except for the matchy shoes exactly the color of her skirt, which is horrible ! Still an IN for me, I’ll just ignore her feet.

  • In, but in small letters. Its safe, sane, and inoffensive.  Nothing to get riled about in any way.

  • Paigealicious

Eesh, I don’t even like it.

  • Isadora Paiva

Ugh, don’t like it. I think my problem with it is that similar colors of blouse and skirt would be helped if there was more contrast between her skirt and legs, but they look practically the same color! And then there are those shoes… OUT.

  • I liked it until I saw the shoes. Between the skirt, her legs, and those pumps, the only thing I had going through my head was “It puts the lotion on its skin…”

  • estella_nyc

    In!  Better than the model!

  • CozyCat

For me, the problem is not the colors, but the style of the blouse.  The skirt is a really kicky little mini.  The blouse is pretty conservative workwear.  Just think of that blouse as a long sleeve crewneck and it already looks better.

On the other hand, if the skirt were longer, the blouse would look better as it is.

    So, I say “out.”

    • sagecreek

Exactly! Tks, I was having  trouble articulating that.

    • suz72350

Yes, my thoughts exactly. It’s a split personality outfit. The top is business-like, the mini-skirt is not. I really don’t like the shirt, and I like it even less with her hair down. It’s interfering with the ruffle. OUT.

  • kelsita421

    Eh, no. OUT.

  • that CAN’T be nude hose, can it?!  But how else to explain weirdly beige legs that don’t match any other portion of exposed skin???  Out, based on the boxed hose alone.

  • In! The colors work for me, at least.

  • Cautiously Pessimistic

Out.  Those colors just aren’t working together.

  • IAmJ

I don’t have a problem with the colors (other than the matchy skirt+shoe+eyeshadow trio) but I think the way the skirt hits her legs is kind of unflattering. Still a generous IN.

  • mini_d

I’ll give her a reserved in. I think pulled-back hair and a smile would have helped the outfit quite a bit.

  • sagecreek

Wrong blouse for a leather skirt. OUT.

  • Judy_J

Out.  That leather skirt looks totally awkward and uncomfortable.

  • good lord she looks rough. early photo call? she needs a massage and a cup of coffee. and so do I after looking at her. cute skirt.

  • R. L.

OUT.  The colors are terrible.  I’d love the see the colors in person but I think the blouse and the skirt seem a little out of synch.

  • guestela

In. She looks good, though I do not like the split-ends look of her hair.

  • IN. She looks so much better than the model.

  • butterflysunita

I like it but don’t love it.  Definitely IN though.

  • vintagion

Feh. I’m bored but she is just hangin’ out at Macy’s anyhow. Totally wearable look compiled out of current trends. Definitely could use some accessories and better shoes, but I’ll give it to her.

  • drdirection

I don’t like it when you can see the shirt bottom under the skirt.  you can see the outline of the ruffles under the waistband.  I dislike like the whole thing.

  • PeggyOC

Out. The tones are too close together, and the skirt shade does nothing for her coloring.  Orangey browns like this are too matchy for her.  And most telling of all, she doesn’t LOOK like she thinks she looks good, which is really what it comes down to.

  • BrooklynBomber

I think the colors are fine but the proportions are off. The skirt & blouse are the same size horizontally; if the skirt was longer it’d look better.

  • Ruth Preston

Ow. Ow. Ow. Colors too close together. Eyes bleeding. Out.

  • girliecue

    In. It’s fine.

  • lalahartma

Out.  I like them separate, but not together.

  • PhillipWilde

That skirt is the color of vomit. OUT.

  • Jaspreet5

IN! She looks gorgeous and i love her hair!

  • mjude

OUT. not a fan of the colors

  • belfebe

IN.  Love, love, love.  Shoes could be more contrasting, but they don’t get in the way of the awesomeness.

  • Verascity

    IDK, I like it. IN.

  • Love it.

  • FayeKat

I think the colour of the blouse suits her perfectely but i totally hate the shoes. I  like that late seventys vibe and i love her hair!
    she is IN.

  • NCDFan

In. I like the shoes too. So there. 🙂

  • Sophie Collier

I’m with you on the color ambivalence, but this is a cute set.  Kind of nice to see the seventies coming back.  I don’t like the matchy shoes but they aren’t awful, just bland.  IN for this outfit.

  • Her coloring makes this work and pushes it into the “In” column for me.

  • AlexisPayne

In, if only for the 9 to 5 reference. Actually I like this look too.

  • piecesofconfetti

IN. And I don’t mind the matchy shoes in this instance. Don’t love them, but don’t mind them.

  • BayTampaBay

Out!  I do not like the colors.

  • deliadee

Love the skirt but the whole look is boring.  The shirt looks like something I wore in the early 80s.  Don’t like the matchy shoes.  Out.

  • Liz

I like it.  I am confused about the tip of her nose.

  • DeborahLipp

I do like it. I wish her hair wasn’t forward, tangling up in the ruffles. But In.

  • leah besson

tentatively in, but i hate the shoes and i wish the skirt was longer.  but theoretically, i like it.

  • OUT. There’s something about this that looks too limp to me. Not that everything has to have crisp, clean lines, but if you’re going to go with a looser look, at least be purposeful about it.  Also, matchy shoes are matchy. And it makes me itchy.

  • TheLaurenJean

    In!!! It’s so cute!!!

  • aimee_parrott

I like it — IN, though I agree that the matchy shoes have to go.

  • jw_ny

Skirt and blouse are cute and work well together.  I don’t mind the matchy shoes and stockings for some reason…usually dislike matchy matchy.

I really dislike her hair…especially pulled forward like she has.  The ruffle top requires that the hair to be pulled back in a pony or barrette…away from the ruffle.

  • ballerinawithagun

    Out. Boring.

  • giiiirrrr

Out because I really dislike these uber-trendy drape-y leather skirts.  They always look really limp and cheap.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

the colors look way better on the model. it’s either the way it’s photographed, the way it’s photoshopped, or the superiority of the shoes tying the whole thing together.

i like the outfit though–except for precisely what you said about the color, & i cant quite explain it either. more of a yes than a no for me, however. sort of.

  • Brown pantyhose. Having flashbacks of large plastic Eggs labeled “Suntan”. Nooooooooo……..

    •  Suntan L’Eggs pantyhose. Yikes! I think I wore those for a little while until I realized I’d probably look better with my whiter-than-the-Queen legs showing. I switched to nude, which is one of the few acceptable shades, IMO.

  • RebeccaKW

I really like this.  I wish her hair was either up or pushed over her shoulders so the ruffle didn’t get lost.  I hate the shoes, but I love the slight retro feel.  And I’m a sucker for a leather skirt.

  • marilyn

OUT.  They look like unmatched pieces from the bottom of the laundry basket.  You know-what is scraped together to wear to work on Friday, because she can’t find anything else clean.  The pieces really don’t go together, and the overall effect is blah. It looks very low end.

  • TheOtherChristina

I can’t get past the fact that she looks like she’s going to pop on a cute coat and go for a stroll to take in the autumn foliage. It’s March, for crying out loud.

  • Joyce VG

The matchy shoes make me cry but IN overall.

  • Out. I was on the fence on this one, but the matchy shoes and eye-makeup (seriously, was she going for a leather eyelids look?) killed it.

  • Jennifer Hejtmánková

What is with HER HAIR too??  She and Hilary should get together and share hair tips…

  • Laura Nugent

In!  I like it.  Although I agree about the matching shoes.  It’s close to not working, but I think she pulls it off.

  • Jessi03

IN!  Also loving the 9-5 reference!

  • Laura Valentine

I want that skirt RIGHT NOW.

  • TheOriginalLulu

I’m not sure I like the colors together either, but I do love the individual pieces. I can’t decide. *fence-sitter*

  • CatherineRhodes

    I really love it. IN.

  • formerlyAnon

OUT. I can only base it on the photo, and on my screen the colors don’t work. Also, I HATE almost all leather garments whose color is darker than a light, pale beige and lighter than a medium chocolate brown.  This is an irrational throwback to my youth when several male friends were irrationally fond of horrible, horrible jackets, all in a yellow-ish to orange-ish brown color that some deer-hunting relative had had made for them out of the skins of their kills.

    These things were hideous.

(really, I didn’t live in Dogpatch – deer hunting was just a very common sport, heavily promoted by the Fish & Wildlife Department in order to control the populations.)

    •  Deer hunting is so popular in Pennsylvania (where I’m from originally) that the schools are closed the Monday after Thanksgiving, which is the first day of deer season. Yep, we sure do like our huntin’ and our drinkin’, all at the same time.

I hear you on that awful range of colors. It’s amazing how the wrong shade can make leather look so cheap.

  • MilaXX

OUT – dull as dishwater. There’s no contrast or interest anywhere. I would either change the top or the shoes because if you are going to match the shoes exact, the top needs to *something*, and that sad ruffle ain’t it. In fact now that I think about it, even if the top was a print or had a more interesting design, this would still be a boring, dull look.

  • Sara__B

Out. She’s somehow made a leather skirt boring, and I love the leather skirts! She’s got those pesky details wrong, too. The blouse color isn’t working with the skirt, the shoes are invisible, and her hair is tangled up with the ruffle detail of the blouse. DETAILS!

  • MissMariRose

IN. it looks better on her than the model.

  • Well. I like it. Not enthusiastically, but I don’t mind the shoes, and I like it with tights better than the lookbook version. And she looks very well styled and turned out. Hair and make-up look great. IN.

  • Anathema_Device

Out. Terrible colors on her, especially that orange next to her face.  The individual pieces are okay, but I don’t like them together. Not even on the model.

  • No to the shoes, but yes yes yes yes yes to everything else. I want that skirt. IN.

  • Anna Garces

The color of the skirt matches the color of her legs…making her legs look leathery…ewww….OUT

  • Kate4queen

It looks better on her than it does on the model so IN but I’m not a fan of that tan leather look on clothes or in cars

  • demidaemon

OUT. My first was reaction was, “NO.” I do admit it looks like it fits her better than it fits the model, but the matchy shoes are a big no, and it still has a shapeless quality.

  • CQAussie

Love the top, love the skirt but I don’t think it works together.  Love the shoes, matchy yes, but I still love it.  Why do her legs look so odd?  They are really tan…..or is she wearing hose? It kinda ruins the look for me…..because now the skirt is kinda blending into her legs… based that weird aesthetic….OUT.

  • sashaychante

OUT Agree that the shoes are boring.  I like the shoe choice on the model much better.  It’s out for me because I simply think the whole outfit is ugly.

  • carolynmo

In, I guess. Not wild about the skirt length.

  • OUT.  Blouse is nice, but pairing it with this dull-o skirt is just…meh.

  • Aly Light

  • StrandedFashionista

In. I like it. Even the hair and makeup looks good. BUT, I HATE the shoes.

  • in.  i dont know why…

  • mom2ab

I lived through the 70s and no matter how ironic you try to be the color combinations are still gag worthy.

  • OUT. Satanic leather skirt.

  • nancymae

OUT for sheer dullness. Those colors are hiddy together.

  • crash1212

IN. Love the skirt and the blouse…giving them together a break as sometimes pictures don’t do colors justice. Great hair and

  • marciekr

OUT.  Those colors are hurting my eyes.

  • 3boysful

In.  Looks better on her than on the model.

  • allj

I’m usually way more forgiving about matchy shoes than you guys are, but they are driving me crazy here. Also, I wish the skirt were 2 inches longer. Overall it’s cute and I’ll give it an IN, but only because I assume she brought a more fabulous pair of shoes to change into.

  • Martha Deutsch

    sum>parts. IN.

  • In.
    Totally adorable.

  • ringthing

  • lizajane1776

This is a first for me. I am going negative on the hose. I think it would have been oodles better with bare legs, or, I suppose, black hose, but those “suntan” things are yuck!
Lack of contrast between the colors (all of them) makes this an OUT. That hurts, because just a few tweaks and it could have been OK.

    • gabbilevy

Those look like bare legs to me… just a bad spray tan?

  • Out, which makes me sad because I normally really like her style. She looks like a pissed off secretary about to slap her boss for sexual harassment.

I’m having a hard time with this one. She’s naturally very pretty, and she still looks pretty here, but I can’t help thinking that she looks like a Thanksgiving Day decoration. And those shoes, ugh. I guess OUT, but not by much.

  • MarissaLG

I like this a lot, it’s youthful and professional and is really cute on her. IN.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I dunno – her skirt, legs and shoes are all the same color, which kind of freaks me out.  Her hair is really dragging down the look.  Straggly and in need of a good brushing.  I like the top.  I guess I’d give her an out, if I had to choose.

  • OUT. She even looks like she hates it.

  • In! She looks really great.

  • Might just be the photograph, but the color of the skirt is clashing oddly with the color of her legs.

  • Samantha Irene

  • Out. I took one look at those shoes and knew why this was up for elimination. Also – so, so tired of cocker spaniel hair.

  • Out, because leather skirts really are the work of Satan. Ew.

  • cleep1000

OUT. This is color clashing, not color blocking. And I still don’t know who this girl is.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

OUT!  The proportions are wrong and the colors don’t work together.

  • I vote In! I hate the shoes, but the outfit looks interesting and like something I could potentially pull off at work. Therefore, awesome!

  • Monabel

Hair hides the ruffle, just a cluttered mess. And, not colors for a white girl.

  • altalinda

Out.  I don’t like the color combination, don’t like the shoes matching the skirt, don’t like the high waist of the skirt.

  • Susan683

    Blah.  OUT

  • kittenwithaquip

I’m afraid I’m a voice of dissent when it comes to her hair– it looks heavy and loaded with product. I can’t seem to get beyond that, so I think the outfit is inoffensive, but not particularly interesting.

  • Out. Maybe it’s the lighting but the color pair isn’t working for me. Maybe the skirt and another top.

  • IN but only because I can’t find something I hate enough to push it into OUT. I don’t like the shoes but this is fairly inoffensive

  • In, my only critique is that the skirt is kind of close to the tan of her legs. It looks better on the model because she has paler legs so the brown looks richer and more saturated, where it just blends in on ashley greene, dont really love the shoes but thats not enough for me

  • I’d be closer to like-like if her legs were a different shade.  The spray tan/bad hose thing is giving her leather legs, and the matchy shoe & skirt combo only add distressingly to that effect.

  • PeaceBang

Too many innocent naugas had to die to provide the hides to make that skirt. It’s hideous. OUT.

  • fringebenefit

OUT! The colors make my eyes hurt and leather skirts are the work of Satan…as you so succinctly put it.

  • Lisa

It’s okay – I don’t love it or hate it, I’m just neutral.

  • Proportions here between top and bottome are too bla. OUT.

  • DominoEstella

ew.. the shoes are a no and dear lord, is she wearing hose?  I loathe hose.  I don’t give a rat’s ass if they are coming back.  They are torture.

    • AthenaJ

I’m with you, Domino – I can’t even look at a pair without hearing my mother’s voice screeching in my head: “A LADY always wears pantyhose!!”

  • I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt and say, in.

  • ziarah

The color of her skirt is too close to the color of her legs. It looks almost like she’s wearing a skirt made of her own skin.

    • AthenaJ

Ick, now I’m having Silence of the Lambs flashbacks…

  • IN, though I’m not sure why you’re having us debate an outfit that’s frankly a little boring. Leather skirts are on trend right now, they’re not as big of a risk as you’d think.

  • margaret meyers

OUT.  The colors make my eyes hurt…

  • AWStevens

This seems a little Halloweeny.  But me like!  IN

  • AthenaJ

That skirt would look better as a chair.

  • fashionablylate

OUT!!! This is awful, all of it!

  • You like it?? That shit is tragic. OUT.

  • Haley Buchanan

It’s not terrible, but I’m just not crazy about that color palate, especially in the spring.  Sorry, dear.  OUT.

  • guest2visits

I think the color palette is fine. Shoes too.  I just hate the shape/style of the leather skirt, – not flattering.
Maybe if it were tulip or pencil, and an inch or so longer.

  • bluefish

I’m old school on the leather skirt score — should always be a pencil skirt.  Suprises me to see this is DKNY — it looks so … I dunno
     — mediocre?  Floppy.

  • I don’t care for the skirt, but that blouse is super-cute on her!  I like that she went with 3/4 sleeves.

  • janetjb

I don’t like any of it together.

  • bailey debruynkops

leather/suede skirts are absolutely NOT the work of satan, but that color red is so grating & the shoes so predictable that yee is OUT

  • Louise Bryan

Leather skirts are the work of Satan, but I still give her an IN because she looks good.  She’s working, not creating, so the shame is all on Donna K. and her minions.

  • In, because the first thing I thought of was 9 to 5. It begs the question- is it an inherently gay thought, or have you bitches developed telepathic powers? Maybe there’s A GAY HIVE MIND. Like in Dead Space. I just got the chills.

  • THe pictures have clearly skewed the color scheme. The overall look is totally cute! I vote In.

  • too bad her legs are the same color as the skirt

  • TieDye64

As you say, this might look better in person. I’ll give her an IN but she should’ve ditched the shoes and hose.

  • aristida_girl

In, I would totally wear that

  • Vic

Sometimes matchy matchy shoes work. The model’s shoes are better, but she looks great. In.

  • ThaliaMenninger

    I think she looks great.

  • leave_Blake_alone

This is definitely IN for me. I kind of love the “yeah bitches I know I’m hot” look on her face too!

  • OUT!  The leather looks like pleather and those sleeves need to make up their minds if their 3/4 length or long.  Oh, and I am not a fan of that calf-poop brown matched with that tomato red.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

NO.  Wrong.  It’s just wrong.  It reminds me of something from a 1972 Playboy ad for cigarettes or something.

  • DinahR

OUT  I see Satan’s handiwork here.

  • Candigirl1968

In – but it is a bit matchy, and it seems more of a fall than a spring outfit.

  • miwome

  • bitterk

OUT. That length works on no one.
