Heidi Klum for UK InStyle

Posted on March 22, 2012

The Kluminator scrubs her face, straightens her hair, and works some fabulous dresses for InStyle UK.

Heidi Klum featured in the March 2012 issue of UK InStyle photographed by Rankin and styled by Amanda Bellan.

You have to admit, the lady’s still got it. She can work a camera and work those dresses. We appreciate the clean face, but we have to admit, we like her better made up for pictures. She’s got the old-school glam down and it’s what she’s known for; what can we say? And aren’t we all tired of the pin-straight center part? Didn’t the stylists get the memo?

Maybe it’s her light coloring, or that we’re so used to makeup, but a little eyeliner wouldn’t hurt.

    • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

Yeah. This really shows off how remarkable her face is, but also her eyes kind of disappear.

      • Sobaika Mirza

Right?? She doesn’t need blush or lip product or anything – her face is so very striking – but, you know. Eyeyliner. A little would go a long way.

        • P M

(Auntie voice) I KNOW darling!! So simple, noo?

    • jcolli69

I love the bare eyes/clean face! She hasn’t looked this young in a while!

  • miagain

And aren’t we all tired of the stupid, gimmicky shoes??

    close your mouth, heidi.

  • MitchellGilburne

I think she looks like a corpse

      Word.

    • gsk241

Or an addict.  I thought maybe “heroin chic” was making a comeback.

      • Andrea Rossillon

I think she just looks sad. Which, you know, is to be expected. Kind of surprised she was interested/willing to do a shoot like this–If I were going through what she’s going through now, I either wouldn’t work, or I would want to be made up to the nines so that the clothes and makeup would do most of the work for me.

        • gsk241

I absolutely agree.  If I were in the process of getting a divorce, the last thing I would ever do is show my face outside (much less at a photo shoot) looking like I had just stopped crying.  That said, girl can still rock those beautiful clothes!

      • j_anson

        YES.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=21413366 Evan Hart

Am I missing something? She just looks high to me…

  • TheDivineMissAnn

Love the Alberta Ferretti dress!  Seeing the Kluminator without make-up is unsettling, for some weird reason….

  • Sara__B

SO tired of the pin straight center part. And if Heidi Klum looks less than fabulous with it, we ordinary mortals need to avoid it at all costs.

  • schadenfreudelicious

props for being beautiful enough to actually work a clean face, but a little  bit of makeup could have gone a long way here..

  • mommyca

i don’t know, there is something surprising about the clean face, so I appreciate it… also, notice that in one picture the “Seal” tattoo in her arm was gone, but it appears in other pictures… funny… really, who does the editing in these fancy magazines? no attention to detail or what?

    • Sarah Dickerson

Where is it edited out?  I think her arm is just turned.

    • Sarah Dickerson

      • shirab

Ah, Seal. Reminds me of when Eminem was on Letterman and the Top 10 list was his advice for kids, the best of which was “No one has ever regretted a tattoo.”

      • jessieroset

In the first inside pic it looks like there was definitely some altering done.  Her arm is turned a bit but you should still be able to see some of the “Seal” part of the tattoo.

  • AlexisPayne

Between the lighting and the clean face she looks like she’s getting over the flu.
Anyway, she’s working the hell out of those dresses, really love the 2nd from the top.

    • Ms_Flyover

Getting over the flu with 6 bottles of Nyquil and a little prozac mixed in for fun.

  • ballerinawithagun

All of us Northern European types need a little bit of make-up. I wish there would have been full body and movement for those fabulous clothes!

What’s up with the tag line “seal knows how to handle me”????

    • http://twitter.com/floretbroccoli Florrie Brafman

       Exactly what I was wondering.

And, more than the straight hair, what I’m tired of is the blond-with-dark-roots look.  When will THAT go away?

    • http://twitter.com/starlounging Ann M. Erickson

I want to read about it, dang it.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

I was going to ask the same question. Really strange. Is it possible they had this ready to go to the press before they got the news?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5WKLKGER4FZ7MJX43OSYDBDPOE Maggie

I think she looks amazing. Look at that body! This woman has been pregnant 4 times! So, she looks better with make up. Who doesn’t? I think it’s a nice change from all those women looking like their faces were puttied on.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_64HSRZWCSJ5RBFGCWDLFQOICYM G

Seal knows how to handle her.  No memo there either.

  • Anathema_Device

I don’t know why exactly, but this editorial seems so lifeless to me, which is weird b/c Klum is so dynamic. Her eyes are kind of dead here, and I don’t think it is just the lack of makeup.

“Seal Knows How to Handle Me.”  Hello.  Does InStyle not read the papers?

  • TAGinMO

I don’t mind the lack of makeup per se, but since we never see her without it anywhere else, it’s a little disconcerting.

Reminds me of the time that a gal I went to college with, who always, ALWAYS wore makeup and had perfectly painted-on bright-red lips, was ill and went to class with no makeup one day. Had she not been sitting next to her boyfriend, whom I also knew, I literally would not have recognized her. The effect is perhaps not so pronounced here, but if I weren’t looking at these shots in a blog post entitled “Heidi Klum for UK InStyle” and saw a couple of these pics in isolation, I may have had to study them for 10 seconds or so to decide whether they were her, or a lookalike.

Also, the lighting on these shots isn’t doing her any favors. In 3 of the 5 shots, her skin literally looks gray.

    • rawrgrowlrawr

If a woman is unrecognizable with a clean face, that means she is wearing too much makeup. Yikes.

I admit my knowledge of fashion modeling is limited to say the least, but I’m always taken aback when I see editorials like this one along with proclamations that the model’s “still got it.” Still got what- the flu? To be clear, I think Heidi is an unbelievably beautiful woman and knows how to work her face and body. I just don’t think this editorial displays that. All I can think is how I want her to lie down and drink some hot tea.

  • jilly_d

hate this editorial.  hate the clothes, hate Heidi’s dead eyes, hate hate hate.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I love that Bottega Venetta. Futuristic officewear.

Feel bad for the Klum, I know she and Seal are splitting up and this editorial looks as though she’s lost her spark.

  • DinahR

Gorgeous and fabulous.  I love these shots but you know…”Seal knows how to handle me”   What’s that about?  This is one of the few times in my history of magazines (which is a long history, I assure) where my curiosity is piqued by the teaser on the cover.  The Kluminator gives good sound byte too.

  • NoelleMB

Don’t get me wrong, she’s a beautiful woman, but she looks totally lit. Did she burn one on her way over to the photo shoot or something? Also, I hate the hair.

  • xmixiex

eeeeek.  the body is slammin as always, but… make up.  she just looks tired… she’s naturally exquisite of course, but man.  this just doesn’t work.

  • ThaliaMenninger

So we’re back to the Heroin Chic, are we? I think she looks rode hard and put away wet.

  • Dhammadina

What cheekbones  –they could have their own show!

  • Ms_Flyover

Is anyone else completely fed up with the hiking up the dress pose?  It is tacky, at a minimum, sleazy at worst, and sincerely makes me wonder what men think women want to see when they are looking at other women. Is this some Terry Richardson influence on the industry?  The fact that she looks stoned makes it worse.  ENOUGH ALREADY.  Just show me the damn clothes, and if you can be interesting about it, great.

And it really pisses me off because I think that Ferretti dress is amazing when it isn’t hiked up like she needs to pee or is looking to make $5 at a bar.

    • http://CallMeJane.com/ CallMeJane

I absolutely agree.  I hate the pose.  Then I saw the dress on the model and realized it had a story that wasn’t being told.  It’s a gorgeous gown.  Heidi did not work the dress in that shot, she worked her legs.  And in the tiredest way possible. Disappointing.

  • formerlyAnon

I may be in the extreme minority, but I like her ‘no-makeup’ makeup. (Because I am sure there’s plenty of makeup on that face, just not the same amounts in the same places as usual.)

I like the way it emphasizes her bone structure (I am a sucker for pronounced bone structure) and to me, it makes her look younger. Or maybe not look younger, but it makes her younger self more evident in her mature self. (That’s clear as I can make that, sorry.)

    • Sweetpea176

I like it too, and I also think it makes her look younger.  Or youthful.  Or something like that.

    • muzan-e

I don’t ascribe to the “cosmetics hide your true self away!” school of thought, but….

Those last two pictures are the most compelling shots of her that I’ve ever seen. You can find pretty faces in any weekend glossy, but those showed me a face with some character to it, a face with some vulnerability. It’s a real person. I can’t help but like that.

    • alyce1213

      I get it.

  • MilaXX

Girlfriend can work it and in a few of these shots, like the last one, she looks better than the model. Hate pin straight, middle part hair and I think a touch of color on the lips and eye would have looked better.

  • michelle shields

The girl is looking tired and stressed

  • kingderella

never quite understood why she was such a big deal as a model* but this is not bad at all.

    * needless to say, i live her as the host of PR

  • beebee10

God, she really gives good face!
But it’s weird to see her in these poses because she is such a powerhouse of a woman. Why pose her (or any female) in these ways: bent over or pulling her dress up and looking daft. Jeez. Just weird and not sexy.

  • BayTampaBay

Does anyone have any dirt on why her marriage broke up?

I cannot find any dirt anywhere on the Kluminator and Seal

    • formerlyAnon

While I shame-facedly confess to mild curiousity, I admire how they’ve (so far) kept their private business private. The lack of public dirty laundry-airing seems consistent with the practical way Klum has created a successful business life from the foundations of a modeling career. She and Seal may be among the celebrity couples that use their money & knowledge of how the publicity machine works to protect their family/kids.

  • mshesterp

Really??  I think she looks absolutely terrible.  And I feel like she’s done something to her face, and I don’t like it.  The hands on the knees pose is so incredibly awkward.  I’ve seen her give much better face than this.  Mm, no.

  • JDreesen

“Seal knows how to handle me.”

um…is this…in reference to how to sign divorce papers?

  • Lilithcat

The only shot I really like is the one with her face half in shadow.

  • Judy_J

I appreciate the fresh-scrubbed look, and good for her that she feels confident enough to do that.  BUT….when people are used to seeing you all dolled-up, you risk having people think you look tired, as she does in these photos.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3KCDEX4FOTCFHZP6WLKSOOKUVM Danielle

I didn’t notice the clothes, I was too distracted by how darn tired she looks.  In the pic where you only see half her face, she looks like Willam.

  • lonepear

She is stunningly lovely, but even though she still has a model’s body, those poses look beyond ridiculous for a mature woman (and even a little silly for a 17-year-old runway model). It would have been much better if they made the most of her adult looks and manner.

  • http://www.tumblr.com/tumblelog/lastbutnotleast janinedm

I don’t know. She looks great, but the poses are more actress than model to me.

  • serenitynow02

She is naturally very beautiful, but she looks wan in these shots, instead of naturally gorgeous.

And I have to say, I hate every single pose.

  • gabbilevy

The ONLY shot of these I like is the one where she’s half in darkness. The rest just look awkward.

  • turtleemily

She’s lovely, but I wish they went with different tinting if they were going to have her not wearing makeup. The overall tone makes her look like a corpse.

  • http://needtherapy.tumblr.com/ skadi1

That third picture is pretty spectacular.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

Hmmmm, she’s popped out how many spawn, is not in her 20s any more, continues to be annoying on PR and still looks like this?  I knew I hated this Teutonic beyotch for a reason.  She can’t keep it up forever.  Or can she?

  • marilyn

I am shocked at how young she looks without makeup.  Wow.  Every picture was spectacular, the photographer made the dresses look fantastic, even if it was a dud when shown in full.  Heidi still has it.

  • http://twitter.com/herong Heron

The lighting does nothing for her or the dresses.  Everything ends up looking cheaper than I know it is.

  • cluecat

Wow, she has strabismus (pupils not aligned) – I never noticed!

She is wearing foundation and color on her cheeks, and a very pale, neutral lip.  But she doesn’t have the kind of complexion which looks good “bare” (who does?)

I expected more out of her as a model – the same derrrr mouth open look is kind of ridiculous on someone her age.   But she has a beautiful body and looks great in everything she wears!

  • JimiG

I hate when stylists do this to anyone with straight hair: gunk it up with product. The dirty, lank hair just makes poor Heidi look like she’s at the end of a three-day bender. And the make-up isn’t helping. She is working the clothes though.

  • snarkalicious

Am I the only one who thinks she looks like a long-lost Fanning sister here?

  • Thathoodwink

All I did was look at the pictures without reading any of T&L’s comments. Heidi is beautiful but when you look in her eyes she looks very sad. Without so much makeup on, she looks younger. She is an amazing gal.

  • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Wow, that’s an unfortunate cover line: “Seal knows how to handle me”

    • holdmewhileimnaked

      agreed.
also agree w/ everyone who says she looks sad. even if these were taken before the whole thing was announced, even maybe before the actual decision was made, you know, theres always the build up. & lots of times the build up is even worse.
the only thing i have to add about the rest of this is that, surprisingly, she seems to look like a bunch of other people in some of these: a little gwyneth paltrow, a lot of jennifer anniston. odd.

the only thing i have to add that is unrelated is that i do hope you are feeling a bit better. i still get heavy twinges of the faux-TN, especially when i, & my teeth, are stressed. this past month it’s been pretty bad. i surely hope you are doing better than me. i know how it is.

      edited for grammar & exhaustion.

  • rainwood1

Heidi has a great face and body, but I’m not so sure she’s working those dresses.

  • http://twitter.com/jessicapippin Jessica Pippin

I’m surprised they didn’t change the subhead under her name.

  • cleep1000

Some of these look badly photo-shopped. Maybe it’s just me.

  • fringebenefit

Gee, I think she’s stunning without makeup. Except for that novelty, this photo shoot is pretty lame and her come-hither expressions unconvincing.

  • Aarjullor

Heidi looks like death warmed over. I hate all the dresses, especially the Cavalli on the cover, ew.

  • elleg929

    She looks drunk and/or stoned.

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

I love the ridiculous heel-less shoes–it’s like a way back machine to the Renaissance, right there.

    • sleah_in_norcal

i always wonder what it feels like to walk in them.

      • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

         I know, right?

  • ccm800

She looks gaunt and severe here – not stylishly so – wellness so. Although it is due a lot to the styling. I do not care for it at all. You can make a chica look edgy without sickly

    • sleah_in_norcal

i agree,  she doesn’t look in the peak of health.  it feels a bit desperate.

  • ccm800

She looks gaunt and severe here – not stylishly so – wellness so. Although it is due a lot to the styling. I do not care for it at all. You can make a chica look edgy without sickly

  • AuntieAnonny

    Yikes.

  • quiltrx

WTF on the “Seal knows how to handle me” headline?  Obviously not!

    • sagecreek

Yeah, did that go to press before the split?

    • sleah_in_norcal

that distracted me from the pictures.  kind of ominous, thinking of him “handling” her.

  • StelledelMare

She looks a bit sick but somehow younger. Some people can pull off the fresh face better than others. The dresses aren’t all that great.

  • RWtD

This could have been done better. She looks so depressed. Better lighting + a light in her eyes (a smize!) and this would be great.

  • butter nut

i hate that they left her hair so dry.  it ages her inappropriately.

  • emily mcginnis

I don’t think she looks great here. the third (close-up) image is the only one i think is flattering.

  • tinyredlocks

Center parts are flattering on no one. Even Heidi.

  • TieDye64

It’s not that she doesn’t look good, but if you’re going to severely mute the colors (of the clothing and the woman herself) wouldn’t it be better to do some bold makeup on that awesome face?

  • rawrgrowlrawr

I am a bit of a makeup whore, but I love seeing her natural beauty emphasized. Women don’t have to be done up to be beautiful. Yes, she looks a bit tired, but mainly she looks like a real (albeit gorgeous) person.

  • SewingSiren

She is more beautiful with less make-up , as in these pictures.

  • TheOriginalLulu

YES, we ARE tired of the pin-straight center-part. Especially when there’s a mile of roots showing.

Having said that, this bitch looks amazing even with the makeup that looks like no makeup look.
Question: Is this the ugly dress editorial? Those Cavalli pieces in particular are quite possibly the ugliest dresses I have ever seen.

  • lordandtaylor

This person does not even look like our Heidi. Very plain. Looks like Samantha from Sex in the City.

  • Lisa

I hesitate to criticize her, because I’d have to throw myself at the mercy of everyone at the Estee Lauder counter for three days straight in order to even look that good, but yeah, she needs makeup.  She’s still pretty, but she looks really tired and exhausted (maybe from all the divorce stress).  And you’re right, she does have that old school glamour, which means makeup.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sarah-Adams/1143985903 Sarah Adams

They’re trying to make her look like Elle Fanning! Which is absurd and demeaning to both of them.

  • KathKo

I guess I’m too used to see her all dolled up but she doesn’t look like herself. She has that alien vibe about her in every picture, like she’s litterally disconnected from herself. Nice editorial. I’d have do without the constant half opened mouth, though. She looks like she has flu and can’t breath through her nose.

  • http://rockiinboxxe.blogspot.com/ KUR COL DE DAAB E NUBA

She looks very blank and tired. Esp around the eyes.

  • PeaceBang

It all looks like someone had a CONCEPT and it didn’t come off. Her poses are cheezy, and she just looks old and tired and doing her dog-and-pony show before picking up the kids at school.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=713709401 Randy Noak

Is it just me, or does she look like Willam from RPDR?
