Gwen Stefani, Working Girl

Posted on March 12, 2012

Smart celebrities know that they’re never really off the clock. Every minute of every day can be spent promoting oneself, so long as one is clever and committed to the idea.

Gwennie? Show them how it’s done.

Gwen Stefani running errands in L.A.

L.A.M.B. Fall 2012 Collection

L.A.M.B. Spring 2012 Collection

You see, Gwen had to “run errands,” which could mean practically anything to a celebrity but for the purposes of this post we’ll pretend that she had to pick up her drycleaning and some ladygoods. Now, you or I may just dash out the door, grabbing keys and various accoutrements along the way, but Gwen is a celebrity, which means at any moment she could be called upon to promote herself and her interests, even if she’s standing in a drugstore line with a basket full of cuticle remover and tampons. Lucky for her, she’s got her own fashion line and self-promotion is as easy as grabbing a couple of L.A.M.B. bags as she heads out. Are they both way too gigantic and don’t really go together? Yes. Does this matter to Gwen as she gets her picture taken yet again? Not at all. Do we love both bags separately? Very much so. Does the nectarine have special meaning? Possibly, but we’re not going to tell you.

She looks like a stylish young woman doing some errands, which in this case means, Job Well Done, Gwennie!

    • http://twitter.com/susanpcollier Susan Collier

You can fit a lot of ladygoods in that yellow bag.

    • Lauren Maier

Why does anyone need two huge bags for anything but overnight travel.  Color me confused.

      • NC_Meg

I was wondering the same thing. What does she have in there?

      • MilaXX

I’m pretending the black is one of those oversized handbags and the yellow is being used as a shopping tote.

        • Cathy S

           Exactly what I was pretending.

      • formerlyAnon

I can think of several scenarios.

Of course, I routinely carry a (large) purse and a tote, so I’m one of “them” – the women you see on the bus who appear to be practicing for either an impromptu evacuation or a spontaneous getaway that’s going to happen without notice at 10:45 on SOME Wednesday.

        • LesYeuxHiboux

As a tutor working in-home I often run around with a giant purse full of planners and personal items, and a giant tote stuffed with picture books and construction paper.

      • tired_mommy

She still has young kids–the yellow one could be a diaper bag?

      • random_poster

Many cities in California have banned plastic bags.  That means we shoppers have to bring bags with us to the grocery store, department store, mall, etc.  Some stores give you the option to buy a paper bag for a dime, but many do not.

Gwen’s yellow-plastic-bag-replacement tote is much, much nicer than my reusable bags.

    • SpcilK

Like her outfit! The bags… not so much.

    • http://twitter.com/arodenha Alli

I cannot believe she’s 42. She must have a supply of virgins’ blood or something because she does. not. age.

      • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Serioulsy, that is what I was thinking. Bags, schmags – how is it that she looks like that? Does she have a professional make-up person in her mud-room, just waiting to prep her while she grabs her keys? Or is she really just that natuarally beautiful and resistant to age?

        • mountainFashionista

Once upon a time (I think in the late ’90s when No Doubt was really blowing up), I read that she does her own makeup.  I’ve wondered now and then if that’s still true — or if it ever really was…

          • BerlinerNYC

I think she’s for reals, or at least was. My favorite thing she said was on some MTV/VH1 special where she talked about how she would go to a mall somewhere when she was on tour, and she’d see some girl in an outfit and think, “Oh, that’s cute, I would wear that. Wait, I did wear that exact outfit!” And that’s when and how she realized she had become a style icon. Cute, right?

      • AwwwTrouble

Her hands are starting, though – it’s almost claw-like the way she’s holding that nectarine.

      • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

I read that she eats a lot of raw fruits and vegetables. She is pretty pale, I think she stays out of the sun… that helps. She also eats organic and loves working out. She claims that she’s always been on a diet.

    • deathandthestrawberry

I like the yellow bag quite a bit.

    • CQAussie

The nectarine is to make her look like the common woman, out on the weekend running errands and grabbing a quick bite to eat.  The bags are gorgeous and she’s promoting them well =D  I love the black one way more than the tote.

    • Anathema_Device

Well, maybe the black one is her purse and the yellow one is the equivalent of my Trader Joe’s bag I bring into stores so I don’t get plastic store bags. I’ll just assume she’s stylish AND environmentally aware.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

That’s where I was going with this.  Black bag: money, phone, keys and other essentials. Yellow bag: purchases.

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Maybe assuming a lot here, but I thought so too. Gotta love her for that.

      • DinahR

This is what I automatically thought as well for the same reason — it’s what I do.  It seems practical.  A purse and a shopping bag for all her loot.  The yellow is a perfect size for groceries.  I love her look here.

      • Judy_J

Seems we’re all on the same page re: plastic bags.  I live in Austin TX and our city coucil is voting to ban them, so I’ve gotten used to carrying a tote to the grocery store.

        • Peeve

Uh-oh. Hope they don’t ban them here. What would I pick up the dog poop with??? That IS a recyclable bag!

      • BookishBren

Yep, we have loads of those bags that are made from recycled plastic that you can just use over and over and over at the grocery store, etc. I love them!

      • NC_Meg

I thought about that but my cloth grocery bags are not that chic. (But then, I’m not Gwen Stefani.)

        • TheDivineMissAnn

Hear!  Hear!  Mine have a big blue Kroger logo plastered across them. And dare I say I’ve had them so long the logo is starting to rub off?  Definitely not chic!

        • Anathema_Device

Ah, but using reusable bags is hip and therefore inherently chic.

          • NC_Meg

Yessss. That means my rag tag group of two Target bags, three handmade bags, and one blue bag from an air force base in Texas actually ARE cool.

      • ballerinawithagun

Exactly! I love my TJ bags very stylish for re-usables.

    • Judy_J

I think she looks great…casual, but not too casual.  I love the oversized yellow bag…just right for shopping if you want to go green and forgo the plastic bags at the grocery check-out.  Well, done, Gwen!

    • Laura Rizzo

i love the bags (separately), especially the neon one!
but i don’t buy bags that big because then i fill them with unnecessary junk and develop a crick in the neck.

    • miwome

I like both those bags–the yellow more, predictably for me–and I also really like that jacket on her. I’m not sure I’d like it if I saw it on a hanger, or on myself, but it’s working for her quite well.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

I wish that her top was a tad bit longer (Leggings Are Not Pants), but otherwise, she is working it very well.

    • ccm800

I prefer her on the street then on the red carpet – I think its the makeup. She always looks SO over-done at RC events. She looks so young and fresh and chic out-and-about.

    • MilaXX

LOL I kinda like the neon yellow for the summer.

    • dress_up_doll

I’ll take one of each, thank you very much!

    • nannypoo

She often wears this red lipstick and I hate it on her. With her coloring it looks harsh and severe. She’s much prettier with a softer color. I like her hair and outfit here, but I don’t like the bags.

    • janetjb

Her grocery bag put mine to shame.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Maybe so, But I’d wager yours isn’t worth several hundred dollars.  Neither is mine, can you say “old Safeway recyclable bag”?

        • janetjb

As long as no one is photographing me while I’m out shopping my mended Trader Joe’s bags are just fine

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Yeah, if I had to face the fact that at any second someone would be snapping a shot of me for publication somewhere, I wouldn’t leave the house, ever, without looking totally pulled together, including shopping tote.

          • Anathema_Device

Heh, I earned total cred with the Whole Foods baggers when I brought out my duct-taped WFs bag.

    • Zippypie

Maybe she was at Costco.  The boxes of ladygoods are pretty effin huge from Costco, hence the giant tote.

And she could get a magic nectarine at Costco too.

    • girliecue

The nectarine clearly means she’s signed on as spokesmodel for the Council of International Nectarine Growers Of The World. Fashionable AND nutrition-minded!

Gwen looks great and I’m thrilled I can substitute doing those tiresome bicep curls with running around all day toting two oversized and bulky handbags. Such an improvement.

    • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

One day purse and one bag to put her newly cleaned laundry in. Seems legit.

    • sagecreek

Clearly, no room in the bags for that little tiny nectarine…

She looks good! Heigl should take note of the scarflessness.

      • RebeccaKW

Heigl should take note of it all.

    • SewingSiren

She looks good, but more like she’s getting ready for a a two week trip.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kim-Elmore/1308422874 Kim Elmore

I think it’s due to her sun avoidance; I mean, she’s a CA girl, but she has never been tan. So, she looks like that & I look like a 40-some yo who grew up in FL & was ALWAYS tan!! Jealous.

    • EEKstl

I’m pretty much obsessed with that neon yellow tote…

    • BookishBren

Can I just say that 42-year-old celebs who look much younger and don’t appear to be botoxed, etc really do make me think those expensive skin care products work.

That or what someone else said about the virgin blood.

      • sweetestsith

Perhaps a combination of multi-hundred dollar products, lack of sun (she doesn’t seem to be a oil & bake girl), and virgin blood? Not many make it work for them, so it must be a delicate balance.

      • Anathema_Device

Lots of sunscreen helps. Also, having a good dermatologist and lots of money can do so much for your skin without doing anything too invasive. I did Botox twice, but I insisted that my doc use a small amount.  I didn’t mind having lines, I just wanted them less pronounced. It looked really, really good and I could totally use my eyebrows. (I told her scowling was a crucial part of my parenting repertoire.) Unfortunately, I have an autoimmune disease and my body reacted badly to the botox, so I can’t do it anymore. And i can’t afford to do all the peels and products I’d like…so I kinda look my age Oh the horror! ;-)

    • Call me Bee

Love her always.  She looks like a stylish woman running errnds.  Love that yellow bag, which gives her neutral outfit a little kick.  The balck bag is just redundant.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=506473106 Mori Clark

oh me oh my do i like those bags.

    • http://theondioline.wordpress.com/ Ondioline

Perhaps the nectarine is an homage to her “Don’t Speak” days.

    • Farthingale

She is totally modeling that nectarine. Her fingers are arranged just so…

    • AwwwTrouble

      Those boots!  LOVE!

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/ORTOU5MPKWMXZZL2IDXVJWFNCI Tina

Me too! Where to find them?

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I’ve always wished I could pull off the platinum hair/red lips- how she makes it look fresh and adorable is beyond me.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Love the black bag.  She always looks good.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

This is the most comfortable I have ever seen her looking just running about (and the most “walkable” heel she’s sported in ages). This also marks the first time I have loved a L.A.M.B. bag. I will be saving my pennies for the leather and houndstooth!

    • another_laura

You left out the part where her publicist calls the papparazzi so they can be there when she enters/leaves the store.

    • suzq

      Ahh…the nectarine….Don’t speak.  I know what you’re saying…

    • PeaceBang

She’s the coolest girl ever. Love it all, just not for me.

    • http://heartprintandstyle.blogspot.com Vivi N

Gwen can do no wrong in my eyes.

And I want those bags, too.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

Holy damn – I have those boots!  Suddenly I feel so stylish…

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/ORTOU5MPKWMXZZL2IDXVJWFNCI Tina

Details re: boots please. Must. Have. Them.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

fake punks in bands make me want to beat them up. for real, doesnt matter how old i get. it’s in the blood.
she signed off on the bags so why not carry them.

    • piecesofconfetti

      Fab

    • NurseEllen

What’s the deal with the white strip thingies flapping in the breeze?  Are they some kind of quasi-suspenders?

Love the black bag, hate the yellow.  Thank God she wasn’t holding a banana.

    • http://twitter.com/myblackfriend myblackfriendsays

      well played, gwen.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1077090078 Megan Sullivan

      Love the black bag.

    • alyce1213

To me, Gwen on the street is always the epitome of cool, effortless chic.

How cute is it that she has a “G” keyring?

    • quiltrx

LOVE the big houndstooth bag.  If I were a rich ladystar, I’d get one in a heartbeat.

    • kim i

okay, name-dropping moment here:  i worked with her father, dennis, at yamaha back in the day.  gwennie was a little brunette thing that came to our softball games and hugged my knees and followed me around and told me she wanted to be just like me when she grew up.  oh, gwennie.  if only i was just like you instead.

    • bitterk

I almost bought a LAMB bag today.
