Emmy Rossum in YSL

Posted on March 27, 2012

Miss LADY. We want to give you a little “Brava” here.

Emmy Rossum attends the premiere of Jules Massenet’s Manon at The Metropolitan Opera House in NYC in an YSL gown.

Because you are serving up some “opening night at the opera” realness.

But girl, we can’t give you snaps up on this because chokers are the work of the devil; because truth be told, we don’t really love this color; and because we hate to be bitches about it but if you’re going to wear those shoes, a pedi was in order.

But the hair and makeup are FLAWLESS.

Mkay. Thanks for letting us give you our opinion. Have fun!

Beautiful face.  What’s with the fug satin gowns?  This material just always looks like cheap bridesmaid.

  • I’m with the bitches on this one. Two snaps to TLo!

  • Competition for the diva!

  • why no to chokers?  At least she’s wearing jewelry.

    • JosephLamour

Google “Kim Richards Choker” and thats what comes to mind when most people think of them. It’s hard to get the image of them being old hat out of one’s head.

  • TheOriginalLulu

    I think she looks fierce.
The color is good on her and while I don’t agree with your opinion that chokers are the work of the devil, I do think that this particular one is. She definitely needed a pedi with those shoes.
    Still fierce, though.

  • serenitynow02

I’m just surprised there isn’t a leash attached to the back.

    Hair and makeup are A+

  • Be honest, TLo. You LOVE to be bitches about it. (Because you’re right, never go without some polish on those toenails and for godssake get rid of that choker.)

I do actually love this color, and I think it’s a gorgeous dress. Can you imagine if she had some sort of fabulous diamond necklace on instead, how amazing this outfit would be?!

  • Summer On The Beach

It looks like her fingernails are painted an odd shade of taupe, and I think her toes might be painted to match.  It’s just an unfortunate choice of color – it looks like unhealthy nails, not like nail polish.

Since I have a weird allergy to nail polish, I’d prefer to think that healthy-looking, well-kept toenails and feet are stilleto-sandal-worthy!

  • famousamy

Disagree on the makeup. Something about her eyes always throw me off. Needs more definition.

  • Whever

Have to disagree with you, Papa Lorenzo and Daddy Tom. I’ve always had a sneaking fondness for chokers, so I kinda love this.
Plus the dress is the shade of some of the flowers that have been blooming around here, so spring fever makes me like it. She looks elegant but interesting- though I agree about the pedicure.
Now, if only she didn’t look so uncomfortable with how high that slit is.

  • I like the choker. I think it looks divine with this outfit.

  • Judy_J

Hair and makeup, great.  Love the color of the dress, but not the dress itself.  It looks like it needs a belt or some kind of embellishment at the waist.  And yes, if you’re wearing the sexy sandals, please go all the way and get a pedicure.  Thank you.

    • makeityourself

Take off the choker, make it into a belt, get a good mani/pedi, and then she is home free.

  • RebeccaKW

That color would be beautiful on Viola Davis.  As soon as I saw the choker in the thumbnail, I knew I would hate whatever else went with it.

  • MilaXX

I’m with you guys on this. Hair and makeup are on point, but that dress is a bit wrinkled. Also? Monkey toes.

  • sarahofalessergod

A choker?  Really, Emmy?  I look at your lovely neck in that thing and all I can think of is a dog wearing a collar.  I really like the dress, especially the color, but that choker needs to be burned in a cathartic bonfire, a la Waiting To Exhale.

  • Kayceed

I’ll grant you the pedi but chokers are awesome if you have a beautiful swan-like neck. A bit demimondaine. And the fuschia is wonderful with her coloring.

  • StrandedFashionista

Chokers work if the outfit is on the S&M side of things… But here, it doesn’t. Everything else, I agree.

  • DCSheehan

What’s going on with the bottom of the dress? It looks like it snagged a thread and got pulled all wonky. The bustline looks poorly constructed.

I’m with the boys, chokers are dog collars. Die please.

    • Lori

I think it looks like she has static cling. Forget chokers, it’s satin that’s the work of the devil

      • kath0722

It’s not static cling (thank goodness), there was a wind blowing right then.
And wearing a choker should be punishable by law. Why Emmy – why?!

  • marilyn

Beautiful.  She can carry off the color.  The choker was a good choice because it filled the space but did not compete with the dress.  An older woman would have wanted something different.  She can carry it off because she is young.  The sandals however, are too casual, and she needed a pedi.  Younger women wear satin, even though it is not something older people like.  They also wear bolder colors.  Shades of Chloe Dao!

  • Cathy S

I disagree. Except for the shoes, which I think are too busy, I think she looks great. I love the choker. So there.

  • sagecreek

    Weird waistline, no?

  • I like chokers – when properly deployed they are dramatic and sexy. Perhaps the trouble with this one is that black offered too much of a contrast to her skin tone and the dress. A metallic or sparkly choker might have worked better here. Plus I think the ribbon effect made this too heavy looking.

  • Paigealicious

I actually quite like the choker, especially with the sleek hair.

  • Sara__B

Lovely hair and makeup, but the gown looks like something I could sew myself (did it need a jewelled belt to cover the waistband seam?) except I’d do a better job on the hem. I don’t hate chokers, but this one is very heavy for such a delicate woman.

  • EditKitten

At any other event, no way. But it screams “opera,” so I kinda dig it. There something to be said for event appropriateness.

  • lizajane1776

Maybe on the pedi, ok, probably on the pedi. But I like the rest of it. You wouldn’t want a dangly necklace ruining the line of the dress, would you?

  • twocee

This particular choker, this once, works really well.

Agree about the pedicure.  I hate getting them, but I also don’t get paid bazillions to stand in front of photographers and stick my strappy shoed feet in their faces.

    • aristida_girl

      Wow, for me, pedicure=Heaven 🙂

  • That choker takes the whole look from WERQ to Moulin Rouge. Remove that and we’d be in business.

  • Bridesmaid gown indeed.  I wore this color in 1974 when my oldest brother got married – I was 17. However I do think she looks lovely – the choker might be deadly to TLo but I think it suits the whole look.  I think it would be nicer if the choker was half that width, however.

  • poggi

I like how she looks in the second picture so I guess I am okay with the color (next to her face) and even the choker (although it should come with a warning not to try this at home) and I actually think the bodice is pretty on her, but the waist and the slit and the color against her legs and the shoes and the un-pedicured toes all detract from the look.    As I often write on papers, it’s a good start…

  • Susan Crawford

Yes! Finally! Emmy’s make-up is perfection, and the hair is great. I know this dress probably cost about the same as a car, but the material still looks flimsy and cheap and discount-bridal shop to me. But I do like the color on her.

No to the choker. Just no.

  • Tatiana Luján

I hate chokers and ankle straps, they make things that should look long – like your neck or your legs – look shorter.

  • Moisturizer on the legs will get rid of the static that is making the dress stick to her in weird ways.

  • Scarlet39

I guess she’s IN from the chin up?

  • allj

I think you’re overgeneralizing on chokers… In this instance, this choker is the work of the devil. But, like everything else, they have their time and place.

  • Love it all except for the choker (which I can never get behind) and the lack of pedicure.  I think the color is fantastic!  It maybe could have used a belt as well.  It looks like an accident that you can see that gathering at the waist.

  • jw_ny

I think she looks pretty amazing.  I’ll go against the grain and admit that I like the choker and like them in general too. I’m ok with the color of the gown, but not crazy about the fabric, love the shoes, and really can’t tell if a pedicure is needed or not.  I was expecting this to be a werq…

  • LesYeuxHiboux

My, what a classy whorehouse madame.

  • kimmeister

I think this particular choker is better than most, but she’d be better suited by a lighter-colored one.  I also have no issues with the color of the dress, just the height of its slit and the static cling/wrinkliness.

But 100% agree on the pedi.

  • Pants_are_a_must

I’m not against chokers, but this one is not great. I like the dress, but I don’t like the lipstick hue clashing with it. And if she wore all those things last night, she probably caught a cold, is all I’m saying. Bitter Kittens can be concerned too!

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

The dress looks like it needs a belt to finish off the look.  I just hate the fabric, though, and I despise chokers.   But hair and makeup are flawless.

  • Yves must be rolling in his grave

    • alyce1213

      But he’s not dead.

      • ballerinawithagun

        Yes, he is dead.

        • alyce1213

OMG I forgot — sorry, he did die a few years ago.
          I just don’t won’t to face it.

  • I’ll take it, with the choker and all. It kinda just works together when it shouldn’t.

  • Scott Isaacs

    The contrarian strikes again!

Nice enough dress. Love the color. Makeup by Miss Clinique Counter herself. Hair a bit too severe. (Read: not impressed on both counts.) But agreed with TLo on two points: the shoes required a pedicure, and this choker is awful.

  • carolynmo

    Want the shoes!!! Want.

  • Sunshine16

Posts like this just tear me apart boys…I love me some T-Lo, but I also LOVE me a good choker!  She looks more fabulous than a girl in a super shiny, bright pink dress has a right to.

  • Agree about the choker, but otherwise I think she looks great. I love the color in contrast to her skin and hair.

  • Anathema_Device

I love that color and I love it on her. (My coloring is similar to hers and I get tons of compliments whenever I wear any kind of berry color.)

Hate that choker, though. Ugh. Kind of ruins what otherwise is a fabulous look.

  • ballerinawithagun

I like all of the parts but they don’t make a whole. She does need a pedi.
I love the gown. This satin looks like silk and I love the color. The choker does not work with this dress.
At least she isn’t doing the “Angelina” pose.

  • alyce1213

What is with the puckering seams and hem at the bottom?  Static electricity or bad tailoring?
    Nice color, though.
(I’m guessing she had the sense to get a pedi before being photographed in strappy sandals, but chose a natural color which doesn’t read well.)

    • I second the pedi guess.  Contrary to what many people think (especially for the upcoming warm weather), having a pedi doesn’t mean a girl’s toes have to scream neon color.

    • TheOtherChristina

Thirding. I have a similar color on my fingers right now and it’s nice, but I think a nail color with a bit more presence would have made this look more, well, polished (forgive the pun.)

  • CQAussie

Agree, make-up was fabulous.  Not sure about the hair, a tad severe but maybe it’s because it’s paired with the awful choker.  Love the shoes and agree, pedi needed for sure.  Love that colour but the satin looks like it’s wrinkled….just not the easiest fabric to wear.

  • I think she looks great, but I just looked at J Law so maybe I’m in recovery mode.

  • Attention Kristen Wiig, now THAT’S how you wear a choker.  Agree that they are typically the work of the devil, but I like the overall presentation here, so even the choker work IMHO.

  • Gorgeous makeup, but I may have emitted a Damon Wayans Jr. shriek when I saw the choker.

  • Lisa

Really, really pretty – the dress is a tad rumpled below the knee, but aside from that, she looks beautiful!

  • BrightsideSusan

Agree on chokers.  I really don’t like them when they are fabric.

    • AthenaJ

Yeah, when they’re fabric they remind me of dog collars…

  • She’s very pretty, and the choker works.

  • Guys, I like the chocker, and I hate it when people have elaborate shoes with a pedi. Maybe some clear polish, but no color please. Love this look!

  • funkypeanut

Dog collars are for priests. This dress needed statement earrings to balance it out… and a good steaming.

  • quiltrx

Well, I love the color (though wish it wasn’t shiny), like the choker on her (they work sometimes), and I love her hair/makeup.  I would have said a big NO if you had asked me if someone with hair as lovely as hers should go with this look–but it REALLY works here.

  • She has the neck for chokers. Not everyone can pull them off, but she’s lucky to have old-fashioned prettiness and a TINY NECK.

The gown is fug though. Seriously, that material.

  • Sophie Collier

Move the choker down to your waist ‘cuz that dress needs a belt.

  • girliecue

I like a good choker, but this one doesn’t fall into that category. The overall look just seems lacking. The devil is in the details, Missy. Pay attention to them!

  • I don’t think chokers are that awful, but no one should wear one that looks like a tourniquet. And while I like the dress color, why does the fabric look so cheap? Surely YSL doesn’t traffic in bargain basement fabrics.

  • lrhoff

Love the color (sorry, boys) and am fine with the choker on a slender neck.  I like it.

  • ccm800

I light scarf and better shoes would have bought her up.

  • RzYoung

I don’t think i’ve ever seen a choker look good…maybe on Michelle Pfeiffer in Age of Innocence?

  • lilazander

    A sash, perhaps? Cover your toes–>”un-pretty”  feet…

  • HobbitGirl

Meh. Looks like a prom dress. And CHOKERS ARE EVIL.

  • EEKstl

On close inspection I think she DOES have a pedi going on, it’s just a really bad metallic neutral or something equally washed out.   I’d have forgive her the color of the gown (which actually suits her) if it weren’t for that damned choker.

  • GorgeousThings

Emmy Rossum seems to pop up at the opening of a door, but I can’t recall anything that she’s been in since “Phantom of the Opera”. What is she up to career-wise, these days?

Regards the dress, meh. I like the bodice, not so much the skirt. I agree about the choker. It does fit in with the “Manon” mileu, however.

    • sleah_in_norcal

i see you do not spend much time watching premium cables dramas.  she is the hottest ever oldest sister fiona gallagher on
SHAMELESS!  and she is. shameless, that is.  i can never remember HBO or SHO, once it’s DVR’d.  anyway, she’s delicious and i love her.

      • GorgeousThings

Ah! You’re right – I don’t watch much TV. We do have premium cable, but with two kids and only one TV in the house I only get to watch what they have on. I’ll have to check out Shameless on my iPad. Thanks!

  • xmixiex

i doubt that she didn’t get a pedicure.  it’s impossible to tell here anyway.

  • Angelina’s right leg, meet Emmy’s left leg.
