Emily Blunt for TIME Style and Design

Posted on March 20, 2012

Darlings, here’s your pretty for the day: Miss Emily, serving up vintage Vogue realness.

Balenciaga

Photographer Peter Hapak photographed Emily Blunt for the latest issue of TIME Style and Design styled by Ali Toth and Aniko Virag.

“I wanted to create something that didn’t feel earthy,” Hapak says. “So I asked her to imagine that she was in outer space, where she was experiencing different noises and light and trying to get along in this new space.”

Yves Saint Laurent and Alexis Bittar.

Stella McCartney

Prada

Jil Sander

Rick Owens

Dolce & Gabbana

Doesn’t get much more fabulous than that, bitches.

That Prada photo? Is, like, seriously creepy? With those ginormous man-hands?

Otherwise, I loved the modernity of this editorial, and that green YSL? Get out of my way because I need it NOW!

      • http://profiles.google.com/marteani Barbara Guttman

I don’t know how much of the problem with that photo is the hands and how much is that her arms look far too short.  Did they completely remove everything between her shoulder and elbow?

I will fight you for the YSL coat. And I cheat, I throw cats.

        • kimmeister

I catch cats with pleasure – I may just get that coat from you!

          • Susan Crawford

Sorry, all, but my little feline companion, La Petite Reine, is trained to run interference where couture is concerned. She may be only ten pounds, but it is ten pounds of ebony-coated terror!

        • Pterodactyl111

I think it might just be the sleeve length? 3/4 sleeves have a tendency to makes arms look short, I think.

      • TAGinMO

Cutting off her legs in the pic definitely gives it a “Russian nesting doll” feel. But that’s really the only pic in the editorial that didn’t do it for me. The rest? Amazing.

      • serenitynow02

I  have to say that in that one shot, she definitely looks like an alien life form, and a scary one at that.

      • turtleemily

The giant hand in the YSL coat weirded me out, too. And then it started bugging me that it appears to be the bracelet in focus in the first pic, so I had to stop looking at them.

        • Susan Crawford

Yes, that one was also kinda weird. I think, in the Prada picture, it was a combination of camera angle and lighting, focus and the basic cocoon-like design of the garment (and maybe some photo shopping to really define the shape of the design perfectly symmetrical) that created the disturbingly Alien Matryoshka Doll from Space effect. Still – this was a fabulous collection of pictures, and Ms. Blunt is – to put it bluntly – awesome!

      • http://twitter.com/beth_winegarner Beth Winegarner

        And where are her legs?

      • j_anson

Yeah, what is UP with that? Is it photoshopping (to what end?)? Is it weird perspective?

        • siriuslover

I agree. It’s so visually disruptive that I can’t even enjoy the artistry of it.

    • ballerinawithagun

I love it when the photography is fabulous, tells a story but still manages to show the clothing clearly!
Emily Blunt is gorgeous. Is her face really that symmetrical? Wow! That perfect portrait hat! Lots of exclamation points!!!

      • alyce1213

        !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
        is not even enough

    • ChaCha_70

Oh. my. god. Emily is serving. it. up!

      • AudreysMom

just like Woody Harrelson, modeling is just one more thing this artist can do. Very very well.

    • ChaCha_70

P.S. Wonder if those Stella McCartney shades would look as good on me? May I have a pair? Pretty please?!

    • MilaXX

Love the sunglasses and the Rick Owens jacket. Please do not let anyone think that Balenciaga Darth Vader looking hat is anything but editorial.

      • Renaissance_Man_ATL

Check out The Sartorialist re the Balenciaga hat.  Several fashionistas wore it during the recent Paris Fashion Week.

        • MilaXX

           sadly I’ve seen it

    • Sue_Asponte

Gorgeous! What on earth is Time Style & Design?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Cortney-Dean/100002491593625 Cortney Dean

LOVE her. And this is full on fabulosity.

    • mountainFashionista

Wow, Shelly O and Emily B in the same afternoon?  I’m suddenly having a great day!!

    • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

Anyone else inadvertently compare this to that Tilda Swinton desert alien shoot in their minds?

      • TheOtherChristina

        Me! Me!

This is definitely approaching Swinton levels of fabulosity.

      • filmcricket

Yes and this came up so, so short by comparison. Giant yawn from me, I’m afraid.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1043171034 Tadiana Walton Jones

For once a Stella McCartney outfit is not the strangest looking thing in the photo shoot!  Of course, that’s said without seeing the entire outfit.  I don’t think I’ll go searching, though; I want to preserve my illusions because the sunglasses are so fantasic.

    • giiiirrrr

      I live for this woman.

    • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Love the D&G and Balenciaga pix. Really stunning, and these are flattering shots of her. Also, she gets to wake up next John Krasinski, so I am totally jealous.

    • TheOtherChristina

Everything about this is perfect. Perfect, I say!

    • http://eclectictsunami.blogspot.com/ Cassie

      FABULOUS. Very Jean Shrimpton.

    • marilyn

It all looks like high fashion, except for the white swimming cap.

    • http://tigergray.blogspot.com/ Tiger Gray

      I want that orange bracelet.

    • cleep1000

She would look great with short hair.

    • AuntieAnonny

I might have to buy what ever magazine this is in. Does TIME really have a fashion mag or is this just a section?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OT3BT4G2LCAJUUINU5DDASERRQ Blake

I’m feeling the Dolce but child I am not at all sure about the Gabbana.

    • lalahartma

–Doesn’t get much more fabulous than that, bitches.  So true!!

    • hughman

Gorge. Lots of Isabella Rossellini, some Veruschka. I might quibble about the flats in the last pic but otherwise it’s brill.

    • Lisa

She is so gorgeous!  She looks amazing!

    • http://profiles.google.com/phyllis.craine Phyllis Craine

Sorry I’m really sick of seeing the Darth Vader hat (which is based in CB’s 1967 bridal gown)

      • fallen_ikon

ha! yes! When I saw it I thought “She ought to be force-choking someone in that thing..”

    • Kathleen B

jesus she looks hot. I want that green coat so bad

    • alyce1213

You’re so right – editorials don’t get much better than this:  Simple, pure, inspired beauty.
Bravo to photographer Peter Hapak and the stylists — and of course the Magnificent Emily Blunt.

The Balenciaga hat and the green YSL coat are killing me!!  The D&G photo is out of this world.  Art!
Aw heck, everything is brilliant; she even makes the dubious print of Stella McCartney (my living room curtains ca 1974) look good.

    • FashionShowAtLunch

Holy effing shit. Bitch can MODEL.  And the styling is incredible.

    • malvernite

      sophistimacated

    • RWtD

I’m not sure the photograph of the Rick Owens, um, cape thing (?) is showcasing it very well. It looks wrinkled or… something. Not quite sure. And the Prada picture is just a stupid choice. I’m amused because some chick from ANTM last week (cannot remember which one) chose a photo of herself where her legs were cut off in the photo and got dinged for it. And this one is a thousand times more awkward and weird than that one!

    • holdmewhileimnaked

no it does not, especially the D+G. yowsa to that resin plastic matching oversuit, yowsa.

    • jhedman

Why is Jill Sander hawking bathing caps? ;)

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3JSTXMWWVZN2QNP2UEKJMTWD7U Isabel

      Re- The Stella McC look. I like the fabric but not the netting. I went to her collection to see the entire dress and now I am not sure whether I like the dress or not. See look 36. http://www.stellamccartney.com/default/shop-products/collections/looks/summer2012#!{“scrollableid”:”coll_s12rtw_36″}

      I will say it’s innovative.

    • granddelusion

Are you kidding me? A swim cap with a visor? Get outta here!

    • Emily D.

There is no sound in space

      • SewingSiren

In space, no one can hear you scream.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OSYAJATXUH3QX7ZDDF52GXG4PU Janie R

      Beautimous.

    • SewingSiren

      Beyond beyond.

    • ccm800

      now THAT is an editorial!

    • miatamam

aBsolutely love it.  Those glama eyes.  Thanks for the photographer’s direction context.  Made it way more fun to discover.

    • Judy_J

      Gorgeous.

    • Pants_are_a_must

Damn, is she serving some modelling actor realness. When it’s someone as good as her, I’d always prefer an actor to a model.

    • msdamselfly

      Really good—You go, Emily.

    • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

LOVE IT.  It really doesn’t get better than that.  Really.

    • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

She really is a fantastic model, isn’t she? Love it!!!

    • berkeleygirl

She puts pro models to shame.

    • kingderella

      wow, shes bringin’ it!

    • http://twitter.com/yankeefoxtrot Alex McGeagh

First thing I thought of here? Margaret Atwood’s “the Handmaid’s Tale”. I’m not sure why (and it’s not a criticism at all). Beautiful woman, beautiful clothing, beautifully shot.

    • http://twitter.com/ShelfAfterlife Shelf Afterlife

      Gorgeous.  Those sunglasses…TO DIE!

    • http://shootingshoes.wordpress.com Amanda Gun

Wow, that’s gorgeous! She’s always so beautiful, and this editorial really brings out her best looks.

    • BeeBeauNYC

      That YSL coat is gasp-worthy.

    • miagain

She’s wearing my mother’s bathing cap from 1964!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=601016544 Amy J Albin

I love that last back lit one!

    • tsid2012

Dear lord, she is pretty!  I have even overcome my intense jealousy that she gets to bed down with my secret straight husband, the adorable John.  I’m not over crazy about some of the peices here but she makes them all look great.

    • mjude

      agree!

    • VicksieDo

Surely her hands are not that large??? (pics 2&4)

    • kolokOlchik

      truly fab!

    • PeaceBang

*squealing and clapping* I DO believe in Tinkerbell, I do, I do!! Thanks, TLo, this is delicious!

    • jcolli69

Bitch is selling those clothes like the rent was due yesterday. J’adore!

    • leave_Blake_alone

The Prada pic is creepy and the Jil Sander one is  downright unsettling. The rest are fab though!

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Fabulous is right!  She is absolutely stunning in every picture.  Especially love the first one with the big hat.  Gorgeous!

    • TheOriginalLulu

      FABULOUS

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Oh my. Gasp! So very pretty…

    • Adriana_Paula

That D&G shot is the most perfect thing I’ve seen in a long time.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

Julie Andrews biopic, anyone? Because, wow.

    • formerlyAnon

First two photos (Balenciaga and YSL & Alexis Bittar) are my faves.

I don’t care what remarkably silly things Hapak & Blunt had running through their heads, (like method acting we groundlings don’t need to know), we judge on results and these are impressive. That green coat photographed fabulously.
