Elizabeth Olsen Celebrates 30 Years in Show Business

Posted on March 08, 2012

What is it with the Olsen girls and their apparent burning need to look like senior citizens? With the twins we can almost kindasorta explain it as a byproduct of growing up in the public eye since they were infants, but what’s Elizabeth’s excuse?

Elizabeth Olsen attends the Atlantic Theater Company Spring Gala in NYC. She wore a Chanel jacket, a The Row dress, and Chanel shoes.

Chanel Pre-Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Sigrid Agren (ELITE)

Sure, it’s Chanel and it’s pretty damn fabulous, but it’d be difficult to make this look youthful, especially when you’re just wearing the jacket. The suit can have a retro/mod feel if it’s styled right – like the runway look, for instance – but if you’re breaking out the jacket to wear over a simple black dress, there’s no way it’s going to look anything but mature. Fabulous and even stylish, but not particularly the best look for a lady in her early 20s. It looks like something Barbara Bush would wear, for shit’s sake.

But if we thought this was bad, we cried to the heavens in anguish* when we got a load of this next look.

*Not really.

Elizabeth Olsen attends the ‘Silent House’ premiere in NYC in a Balmain Jacket paired with a The Row clutch and Cesare Paciotti shoes.

  • Or perhaps this is part of a plan to make us all believe her as a “Serious Actor”.

    • bēst friend’s sister brought in $15696 a month ago. she is making cash on the internet and moved in a $548700 home. All she did was get luċky and put to worḱ the clues explained on this web site..MakeCash2.com

    • VanessaDK

Maybe it is a body image problem–older women wear black under bright jackets to make their (lumpy) bodies disappear.  Sad to hide such a gorgeous one.

      •  Could be so. I hope not, since she is clearly, young, trim and lovely.  But such things can strike any one of us. And I suppose those for whom appearance is such a huge part of their professional life must feel it far more acutely.

      • AuntieAnonny

I think her mentality is more along the lines of “Honestly, I’d rather be wearing a snuggie right now.”

Sure she’s not looking 100% amazing, or her age, but she still looks damned good (and comfortable), which is a huge improvement from how she was dressing a few months ago. And at least she’s not flashing her vagina like half of the other girls her age.

        • VanessaDK

That would be nice–If so, I’m with her on that!

  • The title of this post provided my first real laughter of the day. Yes, it’s still early but still…thanks.

    • Spicytomato1

I know, me too! I needed it.

  • GorgeousThings

Oh Jesus, she’s developing the “Olsen Pout”

  • TLo, she is NOT LIKE her sisters.  Don’t you remember?  She’s independent of them and has her own life.  Obviously.

  • I die for that Balmain jacket but get your point. I never know: is she younger or older sister to the twins?

    • Jessi03

    • tsid2012

It is super gorgeous, just not so much over an all black, longsleeve base.  On the model, over white with that belt, stunning and youthful.

    • KaileeM

Yes, me too. It’s my favorite color: SPARKLY!

    • Cathy S

It’s an amazing jacket. And I don’t even like sparkly.

  • RzYoung

I actually prefer the 2nd look, i find it elegant.

  • Very funny!!  All you say is true – especially about the first look.  But, I do think that 2nd look is really gorgeous and classy.  Old ladies make stuff like this look dowdy, but she really does look sort of adult and beautiful in it.  Like the way Ivanka Trump can do business-y suits and still look amazing.  Sure, she looks older than her years, but I kind of love that 2nd look.

  • MilaXX

In both cases she took a fairly young looking runway outfit and granny’d it up.

  • IAmJ

Posts like these are a bright spot in my otherwise dreary workdays. Love.

  • poggi

Maybe they all have some gene where they make anything they wear look older.   Quick put her in one of Katie Perry’s crazy get ups or Zooey Deschanel’s little girl ensembles and see if she can make it look like something a Gold Girl would wear.

  • cmb92191

The Balmain jacket is gorgeous.   If she only paired it with white or even dare I say *tan family*, it would have been an improvement.  The black just makes he look so old.  I giggled at the Barbara Bush comment– I liked the jacket until I read that.. (not a political statement, just I’m not elderly!)

  • cmb92191

She looks like Rosanna Arquette (back in the 90’s) in the second picture.

  • she needs to know that tasteful and youthful are not mutually exclusive.

    • Just like SJP needs to know that age-appropriate and sexy are also not mutually exclusive.

  • That second coat/jacket/whatever is so fucking fantastic!  However, it seriously needs to be paired with something else…or she can just ship it to me.  I’ll take it off her hands.

  • CPK1

I need both those jackets in my closet (not to be styled a la Elizabeth Olsen, of course). But they are gorgeous

  • JaneDC

This title ranks up there with Jennifer Lopez Airs It Out. Laugh out loud funny! About the jackets, though, I’m wondering if this is anorexic dressing: lots of clothes to disguise the absence of body mass.

    • Spicytomato1

I used to think that about the twins, they seem/ed a bit consumptive so that makes sense. Not sure about this sister, haven’t given it any thought. And I probably won’t 🙂

    • xmixiex

very true about ‘anorexic dressing’… but she doesn’t look particularly unhealthy in the skin or face.

  • bluefish

The two jackets are super gorgeous though.  The Balmain is divine.

  • Anathema_Device

That Balmain jacket is so fabulous, especially as worn in the runway photo.  Why did she do that to it?

  • The Chanel actually looks youthful the way it was originally shown, but not here. Here she looks like the character Amanda Bynes played in that movie where her father was Lord Dashwood, running for office, and she had to start behaving & dressing like a titled old fart. And that Balmain jacket is fabulous but what has she done with it?

But I think the worst development here is that she’s started to become infected by that Olsen Red Carpet lemonade-face that inflicts her sisters.–GothamTomato

    • kentiesgirl

Olsen Red Carpet Lemonade Face. I think Lea Michele caught it as well. They must have mingled at some NYC event a while back and she forgot to hand sanitize. Poor little starlets. Is there no cure?

  • I like both looks, it doesn’t bother me that much the fact that she looks much older. And it’s more difficult and original to do that instead of dressing like most of stars her age: short, tight and tacky.

  • SignLadyB

Ooh dear–what happened to her in the last 6 months. I remember seeing her looking so un-Olsen. Cute young fashion and styling. No puppy dog eyes and sunken cheeks. Do the evil Olsen twins have powers to take a sister hostage?
Either of these looks could have gone to these events straight from the runway and knocked my socks off, especially the Balmain, instead the evil twins opened their closet and worked their tragic magic.

  • I kind of like the Balmain look on her–she looks supremely confident.

    • Scarlet39

I agree.  I adore that jacket!

  • Kayceed

I find these choices very interesting – not the usual body-concious starlet schtick. Actually rebellious, given the standard expectations. I like the spirit of it.

    • blixtme

I agree. I think both are cute, in a “normal girl wearing expensive clothes” kind of way. I know I didn’t have the confidence at that age to bare my rack or anything else, so I can’t really blame her if she feels the same some days…

  • that Balmain jacket must be MINE.  /drool

  • I LOVE the second one–you boys be cray.

  • bloggertobenamedlater

Maybe she’s lobbying for Gloria Swanson’s role in Sunset Boulevard.

  • theblondette

I bet she and her sisters know all the rules to bridge.

    • Spicytomato1

And, unlike Cathy Cambridge’s claims, how to pour tea.

  • ASK26

I have to say it might be the influence of her sisters.   My younger sister (for a while) emulated some of how I dressed (heck she constantly stole my clothes and I am sizeS bigger)

  • kentiesgirl

I’m all about ankle straps for practical purposes, but what is going on with those Chanel shoes? I’m literally amazed her feet aren’t purple (bet they were by the end of night). Why did you dig those straps into your flesh like that young lady?

The Balmain shrug is so fab..but now all I see is Barbara Walters. In both looks. But her skirt/dress would’ve been shorter. Lady likes her legs, and I say go on with yourself sister. This one..meh. At least she doesn’t look like she’s threw on every knit blanket she could get her hands on like the other one.

  • Mariah J

I don’t know, the first look she could swap the dull dress for a shorter tighter one and the jacket would still look really cute and I kinda like the second if you need to be covered up (ie it’s cold) but the bag is hiddy.

  • marilyn

Love the Chanel shoes in the first look.  Maybe she thinks she is fat.  That is why most women put colored jackets over solid black.  Since she is wafer thin like her sisters, this is not necessary.  She does not go for the heavy eye makeup like her sisters, so she looks much younger than they do.  They look scary.  She does not.  She is young, so if she continues with this, she will be the cute one.

    • dress_up_doll

“Maybe she thinks she is fat.”

This is exactly what I thought. She’s crazy if she does. I think she looks fine in both sets of pics, but these looks are a bit mature and prematurely dowageresque. I think if she’d worn the Balmain as the runway model does, it wouldn’t look as dowdy and mature.

  • Scott Isaacs

Look the first: I disagree. Yeah, it makes her look more mature, but not by much. And her figure can pull it off more than that model can; it makes the model look boxy and swallowed up. I give her a thumbs-up.
Look the second: I agree more. It makes the model look mature, even. The white shirt works well with it, but I think it also complements the model’s skin; EO would fade away with her lighter complexion. And I’m not a fan of the black. What to do?  What to do? What to do?

  • fiestyfashionfem

Y’all crack me up!  Love it that in this shitty world TLo and their PUFs make me laugh at least ten times a day.  And yes, that sweet little girl is rocking a look that would be fierce . . . on my mama.

  • Bozhi

It looks like she is going through some personal issues and maybe gained a little weight.

  • aimee_parrott

What she needs is to stop looking to her sisters for styling advice.  No 20-something should be walking around looking like Bea Arthur.  I love that Chanel jacket, but the styling is all wrong.  And that second picture?  Oy.  I can’t even.

  • Laylalola

I have this sneaking suspicion that the appeal is all in the price — if the jacket is priced at $15,000-$75,000 then an Olsen will probably wear it (but if the exact same thing were priced so that it were widely accesible to the public, no way it would appeal to them).

  • Ellie Rowe

I agree with the first one – she does look a bit old, but the second? Really? I think she looks fabulous. Bohemian chic sort of thing. Shame on you, TLo, for condemning a girl who covers up. They can’t all be Blake Lively or Lea Michele – and besides, it’s cold.

    • So, she looks a bit old in the first picture but shame on us for saying she looks too old in the second?

      Alrighty, then.

  • Sara__B

I adore those outfits. I’m 60. At least she dresses like an elegant older woman instead of a rich bag lady like her big sisters.

  • MissAnnieRN

The Fug Girls featured this and I voted yay on it over there.  I love this.  I would wear both outfits.  That Balmain jacket is fab and would go with so many different things.  The first look is a bit office-y.  Not the kind of thing one would expect to wear to a Theater Spring Gala, unless said Gala was held in a law library.  But I still love it.  I could never wear those shoes.  How she manages to not have ankle fat in them is beyond me.  They look like the kind of thing even Angelina Jolie could wear and have ankle fat in them.

  • Kirsten Henry

I don’t know why, but I absolutely love these outfits.

  • I think this is an example of taking some beautiful pieces and making them look frumpy. The jacket on top – pair that with a black micro mini, tights and killa boots, and that would have been fab! The second look – the runway model is working that one. I think she has a feel for unique pieces, but then doesn’t know how to make them work appropriately for her age.

  • HengRu

I think the only thing wrong with the Chanel jacket is that it doesn’t fit her. It’s a fitted style and it looks a couple of sizes too big. The Balmain jacket, on the other hand, is more of a loose wrap style and fits her fine.

BTW, the dress under the Chanel looks to me more like an LND (navy) than an LBD.

  • janetjb

She could pull off the Balmain runway look if she were 5 years older.

  • nannypoo

I love the Barbara Walters outfit, just not on this girl. The Chanel jacket is too big for her, but if it were sized properly it could look great with something more youthful, like a different dress or some well-fitted pants.

  • TheOtherChristina

The first one is a hot mess but I am smitten with the second one. I don’t think it’s mature or stuffy or boring or anything like that. I think it is youthful, chic, sexy, and fabulous. Love it.

  • tired_mommy

At least she brushes her hair!

  • The Balmain look is TO DIE on the runway.

  • BrooklynBomber

Elizabeth Olsen Celebrates 30 Years in Show Business

I love it.  You’re right, but there’s a bright side. She’s not wearing something so short she won’t be able to sit down, so tight we can count her ribs, or so all around tacky we cringe with embarrassment. I give you: http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Hanna-Beth.jpg  Not that those are the only choices, of course; I’m just grateful when we don’t have to look at something like that. Or this (which would be Olsen-y if it had a Persian lamb coat over it): http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ne5L56Hh0kU/TcQPk98XAuI/AAAAAAACf08/VxiqseS5k-c/s1600/Caity%2BLotz.jpg

  • AgingWell

I need a mother-of-the-bride get-up and that second jacket has me panting.

    • Qitkat

So fabulous for MOB. Happy wedding!

  • merciblahblah

That Balmain is sick and WRONG (in a fabulous way), but it looks so much more fresh with the white than the black. Even that change would’ve made all the difference.

  • SewingSiren

She’s very supportive of her sister’s fashion line. You kind of have to admire that. I really do not like those tweedy Chanel jackets , but everything else looks good.

  • Qitkat

Actually I love both these jackets. The Chanel does appear to be a bit too large. Perhaps dark colors are not the friend to her that she thinks they are. I will assume these are a misstep for her rather than a lurch towards the dark side.

  • tsid2012

She ALWAYS looks decades older than her actual age.  And it seems to be on purpose, for some reason….

  • Pants_are_a_must

She never gets it right, does she.

  • Spicytomato1

Ooh, yeah, anguish is right with the second look, it says “great aunt attending her young niece’s baby shower.”

The first look says “suburban real estate agent at a career networking luncheon” to me. (Except the shoes, I think they’re cute.)

But I love, love the suit on the model. Like you said, it hits the perfect note of retro/mod.

  • Caaro3

As we used to say in grade school, “Pee U!”

  • Joyce VG

She’s very covered.  How refreshing for young ingenues.

  • This girl is only a year older than me, and if I had her resources and good looks, lord knows I would be wearing the cutest young frocks in Hollywood. Thus, it pains me to see her dressing like this.

    • Spicytomato1

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. I think she’s gravitating toward the wrong designers for this point in her life.

  • VanessaDK

I thought it was Faye Dunaway!

  • NCDFan

I like both looks. I would have liked both looks when I was in my early 20s. There’s something to be said for outfits which don’t require one to always be careful of how one sits, stands and walks. Warm is also a good thing. What’s wrong with modest and dignified?

  • Elana Friedman

She’s a fashion icon for all the religious orthodox girls out there.

  • I think she (and they) dress to show off their money. Sure she looks old, but she’s rocking like One Signature Money Piece, that says “Bitch, I will always have more money than you.”

  • bleh

  • alyce1213

Clearly, she does not want to represent herself as just another bimbo-looking starlet in tight, slit, too-short, very low cut clothes. She wants to be taken seriously.  That’s okay.
I think she’s insecure about what to wear to accomplish that and makes inappropriate choices.  Some people don’t have a naturally ability for that, so she must be schooled.
A weekend with Teen Vogue to start, and a full week with Elle.

  • Lizzyisi

It’s hard when you’re young and have no interest in wearing !!SEXY!! clothes or something super trendy to not look like you’re dressing too old or dressing too much like you’re going to work. I think she comes closer with the second look than the first. The Chanel really needs both pieces to look youthful (I think her shift is navy, not black, because I think she wouldn’t make that mistake, especially since her shoes are also navy). It also reads “funky and stylish” when closed so you can see the fasteners, but just boxy and  grown-up when open.

Love the ring on the second look, but the necklace is all wrong. The clutch was a nice idea, but that shade of blue adds to the matronly feel.

  • kimmeister

Those Chanel shoes in the first look are HORRIBLE.  Her poor ankles!

I love the Balmain jacket, but deployed differently.

  • If she had worn the Balmain jacket more similarly to the runway look, it would have been great.

  • If she had worn the Balmain jacket more similarly to the runway look, it would have been great.

  • formerlyAnon

She looks lovely (I like the shoes in the first picture a lot) but she would be perfectly appropriate as the Newest Hire at the senior partner’s uber-fancy semi-annual entertainment for the professional staff and the firm’s best clients.  So, a little too safe.

  • giiiirrrr

OMG, that Chanel suit is HEAVEN.  Apparently being a big meanie is really working well for Kommandant Karl these days.

  • Love that jacket – it went from edgy to geriatric on her though…dang girl.

  • macostacruz

I kinda admire how they buck the media pressures to be hyper-sexualized young things.

  • Stubenville

Well, at least her hair looks combed and she’s not cringing in terror of the lens…

  • guest2visits

My biggest complaint about the twins is constant bad posture. Stand up straight, put your shoulders back and stop hunching-over.
Elizabeth has just a tiny trace of that bad habit.

  • Susan Crawford

Personally – as a woman of a certain age – I feel validated when I see any of the Olsen gals rocking a look I would happily wear. Granny chic? Works for me!

In this case, the photo of Elizabeth in the Chanel jacket reveals that she is wearing something three sizes too large for her! Whenever you wear a “boxy” cut, it has to be fitted perfectly, or you will look dowdy, and dowdy is never chic!  And I LOVE the Balmain top, but the styling does echo Baba Wawa at a charity event.

She seems to be a very charming, bright, outgoing young lady, but she (and her sisters) need to remember they are still young. Celebrate it, Olsens! It passes faster than you might imagine!

  • I didn’t know who Elizabeth Olsen was at first, so I totally believed you when I read your headline. In her twenties???  I don’t think so…

  • You do need to give her props for good makeup and hair in the Balmain jacket shot. And I agree with some of the other kittens, I’d rather see a young woman err on the side of conservative than sear my eyeballs with tacky, tacky, tacky.

  • Toto Maya

Yeesh, that second look would be too old on Helen Mirren.

  • I love the suit on the first (but not for her) and I think she looks smart in the 2nd look.  And yes, youthful, except the hair.

  • LordZoe

i like! very demure and chic – some women just like that octogenarian look!

  • howdoilook

Guess I’m alone here, but I kind of love the second one. I’m sick of seeing everyone’s spray-tanned thighs and baby heads. I think she looks demure and professional, and her hair and makeup are beautiful.

  • Diego!

How old is she? 56 and she is abusing botox? My Gosh, she looks older, but not because of her clothes, but due to her face and/or make up. She looks like a mom of two or three getting back to work after a while. Dreadful.

  • xmixiex

not to be, i don’t know, the judge of female beauty, but she really is like a more beautiful version of her sisters.  gorgeous face.  but the clothes, beautiful, but no fun at all.

  • CatherineRhodes

Your comments are all dead-on. Very funny! The strange thing is that in the Martha May movie she looks young and pretty, and has a terrific figure.

My advice: She and Jennifer Lopez should do one of those magical body-swapping bumps, and each take half of the other’s look.

  • I’m into the Olsens’ look. All 3 of them. Not youthful, but beautiful and unique nonetheless.

  • butter nut

wtf is wrong with these girls?  they are young & beautiful & richer than god – FFS lighten up!
