Diane von Furstenberg Fall 2012 Bags

Posted on March 21, 2012

Ladies, pour yourself a cuppa whatever you need to get through your day and sit down. We’re gonna talk bags. Actually, you’re gonna talk bags because as much as we love these witty, whimsical, highly structured pieces, we’re not the ones who are going to sport them. Then again, since when do we refrain from opining about things that don’t concern us? Since never, darlings.

We think these are really fun and if we were gals with cash to throw around, we’d love to own a whole bunch of them, just so we could walk down the street every day, carrying a big pair of lips, or a domino, or a telephone. But that’s us. Some people take their fashion very seriously and even we have to admit, there’s a rather juvenile feel to a lot of these. We’re not sure any of them would ever work with a formal outfit, but we do think it would be hella fun to take one out for a night on the town.

So, once again, kittens, our question to you is:

DVF’s whimsical fall bags: YEA or NAY?

And please tell the class which ones you’d kill to own.

    • MoHub

      Definite YEA! DVF rules!

    • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

Sign me up for the domino, rotary dial, and puzzle piece. Please and thank you.

      • Jill_3

Exactly. Those three would be much appreciated around this neck of the woods. I’d take the clock, though, you were out. And I think if you’re young enough (like about to turn 21, like me, which- if you’re listening, world, this would be an ideal present) you could totally rock one of these at a formal event.

    • http://profiles.google.com/amanda.leigh.albert Amanda Albert

      • BayTampaBay

        I agree….NO!

    • P M

Yea – Just for the Schiaparelli (yes, I had to look up how to spell it) vibe. I’d love the last row, middle, please! And that pink heart one in the top row (cuteness!)

      • ballerinawithagun

Thank you for the spelling! I was thinking about posting something about Schiaparelli (was just going to go with her nickname Schiap to make it easy) but I hesitated. Must be the influence of knowing that the exhibit was coming up. Accessories are great with surrealism, dresses with hands at a few designers, not so much.

    • theblondette

Would love the phone and clock ones! I feel like the lips are kind of tacky. The puzzle piece looks tacked on at the last minute! Would be much more awesome if the bag were in the shape of a puzzle piece. I would love that.

      • P M

I have a feeling an actual puzzle piece shape would be pretty hard to make. And way to easy to lose things in there.

        • theblondette

Pfft, for the price these things go for I want a more exciting shape than a basic clutch! :D

      • AthenaJ

I’d be afraid those lip bags were going to eat my hand.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I love the contemporary take on Surrealism.  It harkens to the great collaboration between Dali and Schiapirelli in the 30’s.

      • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

I love the whole Dali/Schiaparelli thing, but these are missing the mark for me.  They look just . . . juvenile, I guess?  Now I’m left wondering what I wish they would look like!

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

True, they are a far more youthful take on the surrealist thing. But I do love the sharp ess, and clean lines of the bags. Ialsoved the “hands” dress.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6RS6NLL44AED3E4QWIYTDQGU6I Psy_Chick

Yes! The bags are awesome, but what I really want is that dress!

            • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

              Kinda scary fabulous, isn’t it?

    • MeganT

    • http://twitter.com/sk888888 Cele Deemer

      Pretty darn cute!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

ooooo, either top left, 1st row or  far right, 3rd row.  They’re basically the same bag, and one of the more “serious” ones, just in different color/texture treatments.  I LOVE that chunky bracelet aspect.

      Overall, YEA.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

I am looking at the pictures again, and now I’m not sure if the bracelet is part of the bag, or just a bracelet.  The very last row, far right, the bracelet is clearly attached to the bag.  However, for the ones I like best, it appears that the bracelet might just be a bracelet.  I thought it was attached.

So now … just ‘yea’ (no caps)

    • kcarb1025

    • DeborahLipp

I love. Many of these are perfectly appropriate with formal wear, and spice up an outfit with some FUN.

As you know, whenever I comment about bags, I comment about practicality. I know a lot of people think of them as merely an accessory, but to me that’s like wearing a watch that doesn’t tell time.

I love that these wristlets and extra-large clutches could actually contain a cell phone and some keys and a lipstick & mirror and a few bucks. Traditional tiny clutches often can’t. I love that they’re dressy AND fun AND useful.

Pink & gold lips or teal puzzle piece for me, please.

      • SewingSiren

You really must purchase that Lip bag. It was made for you.

        • DeborahLipp

All of a sudden this year there are lips everywhere. I don’t actually want to become a weird Name Thing Person, but they’re DAMN cute.

    • annrr

Yay. They are all fun to look at, but the ones I LOVE LOVE LOVE are the blue suede circle and the black on in the bottom row middle with the chain wrist strap.

    • http://www.facebook.com/charlotte.horseman Charlotte Horseman

Oh… I’m going to say Yay because they ARE fun (I’d pick the lips and eye 3rd row) but to actually buy with real money?  Nay.  Sadly nay.

    • SewingSiren

I initially didn’t notice how many are little nods to Salvador Dali and Elsa Schiaparelli. I would like to have as many as I can carry, starting with the domino, lips, clock, heart, and sun king.
      Many happy returns.

      • Susan Crawford

I just posted the same comment before I scrolled down and read yours. Everything old is new again in fashion, eh?

    • NurseEllen

Major YEA.  The black/gold lips, the domino, and the teal colored round one do it for me.  and I LOVE the model’s dress and gloves, too…….could I add those to the tab?

    • http://twitter.com/algaechick algaechick

Could do without the lip and face bags. Will cut down a horde of society bitches so I can have a whole set of domino bags-I’ll give them to friends as they come over for a party-it’ll be a modern key game. If you can make a match with the end(s!) of your domino bag…

    • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

I think they’re adorable and I would definitely consider purchasing one when they’re available. YEA!

    • Sara S Rummell

YEA!  As for which ones I need, the domino, the puzzle piece and the clock…thank you

    • http://viridianpostcard.blogspot.com/ viridian61

nay – they look dopey – to use an old-fashioned term.  I wouldn’t buy one, even at a reasonable price.

    • StelledelMare

Aside from the ones with the lips, a very big YEA

    • AwesomeMargie

They look like fun and I think I could rock out a Domino handbag.  :)

    • EiEiOh

Nay for most of them. With a few exceptions (1 and 2 for example) they are too juvenile for anyone old enough to afford them. And you could really only carry them once or twice before the novelty wore off.

    • http://twitter.com/lenabena_ Elena

Yea. I would love to own all of them, with the exception of the clock one.

      • Snailstsichr

Oh goody – then I’ll take the clock off your hands!

      • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

The clock is the only one I like! And I like it a lot, like, a lot a lot.

    • BrooklynBomber

I like a few of them. The keyhole, the domino, the phone dial. That’s about it.

    • Kate4queen

I love me a nice handbag and have a closet full of them, but these don’t really do it for me. If I’m going whimsical I’d rather get a Lulu Guinness one.

    • Beardslee

I like the phone and the clock and the blue suede circular one.  I particulary like the ones with straps. They look so much more natural to carry and that makes them more chic to me.

    • charlotte

Nice bags, but I can’t get over that tacky hands-on-boobs shirt/dress/whatever in the first picture. Are they serious?

    • http://twitter.com/Athenabast Athena Bast

These look so cheap. There will be knock offs in the matter hours.

    • fashionzombie

YEA. Kill to own: keyhole, domino, telephone.

    • marco5ny

Glad I’m not a woman who’d have to deal with these.  My hand would cramp after carrying some of those thick, hard cases all night.  Just realized that my trendy girlfriends must have mucho more grip strength than I do.

    • unbornfawn

These are really fun. But I wouldn’t spend the big bucks for a novelty purse. I’d buy a couple if they were $20 at Target.

    • Shoelover1512

Yea! And if I had to pick a favorite…this is hard….the rotary dial pink one.

    • http://twitter.com/taijuuuh Taija HU!

One of each, please. Provided I don’t have to pay the hefty price tag ;)

    • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

YEA – whimsical and fun. I like that it isn’t the same ol’ same ol’.

    • marilyn

NAY.  The purses are junky and juvenile.  They are the trendy purses you will find in second hand stores next year.  However, that dress is GREAT!!!!!

      • LittleKarnak

Totally agree: Nay to the bags, Yea to the dress!!

    • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

Nay.  I’m not killing to own, just killing them, period.

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

Huh. Just not feeling these. I think the word “juvenile” captures it for me. I love to have fun with fashion, but these just seem like something that has been done before – perhaps when I was in the sixth grade.

    • JasmineAM

I would like one of each, please!

    • http://profiles.google.com/anplica Anplica Fiore

    • Susan Crawford

How VERY, VERY Schiaparelli! The hands, the lips, the clock faces. Done in the ’40’s by Schiap. And VERY nicely reinvented by DVF. Me want!

    • SapphoPoet

Totally YEA! Such fun. I love the big keyhole, the domino, and the puzzle piece.

    • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

I usually can’t stand DVF, but all of these are really cute. I think the clock face is my favourite.

Who cares if they aren’t formal enough for black tie-type events? I’d bring one along anyway, just for the hell of it.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_B53PQYXSJR4YJBV3J6BWYSICRQ Jamie

Yea – I’ll take the 1st row please. Everyone else can fight over the others

    • CQAussie

Yea even if I do find them slightly hilarious.  I would love the pink one with the gold lips.

    • http://opinionandamovie.blogspot.com/ Deitra S.

A YEA for sure!  I think I’d like the circular bags if the zipper went around the circumference of the bag rather than across the center, but I still adore them.  I would cut a whole line of bitches for that domino bag & I love the clock-face bag and the heart-shaped lock clutch.  Gorg!

    • lalahartma

    • Judy_J

I like them (especially the domino), but I’m a “one bag” kinda gal, so even if I had the $$$, I still wouldn’t purchase one.  But they are awfully cute, so I’ll vote YEA for that reason alone.

    • amywinns

      LOVING. Absolutely seething with covetousness.

    • LongTall_Sally

      Definite YEA!  I want!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Yea.  Girls just wanna have fun.  (And I’m a whore for anything DVF)

    • ringthing

Cute, fun, and while I’d like to observe these carried in the wild, I wouldn’t want one myself. Just not me.

    • emily mcginnis

love (although they are way too tiny for me)!

    • http://twitter.com/mirrormirrorxx Paola Thomas

If we’re doing lips I prefer the Lulu Guinness version…these all look a bit like novelty chocolate boxes…

    • IAmJ

      Yea! I want the domino.

    • MissMariRose

I’d love the square keyhole on the top row and the domino.

    • Gener1c

I love them!  I just wish I had a need for a clutch (and the $$ to buy one, let’s be honest)

    • prettybigkitty

Nay.   Silly bags are for kids.

    • Laylalola

Nay. It’s not the whimsy that’s an issue. They look so damn cheap and tacky.

    • sherrietee

mostly yea.  I would not want to carry any purse with a pair of giant lips on them, though.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Claudia-Gilbert/875055316 Claudia Gilbert

I like the lips and eye bag…and the green circle, though it does look a bit like the tube map symbol…

    • TheOtherChristina

I never thought I’d say this about DVF, but I see that domino in the hands of Katy Perry.

I like the keyhole, too, because the whimsy is tempered with sophistication. I agree with various PUFs before me who find the majority of there to be juvenile rather than joyous.

    • Pannyx

I don’t dislike them and some I like quite a bit, notably the clockface and the domino. But overall they look a little tacky to me. Especially the ones with the cheap looking eyes and lips glued on.

    • Jecca2244

love the lips. def a novelty piece for a jeans and fun blazer nite. but i heard they might not be making a ton of them?

    • Pants_are_a_must

YEA! SO MUCH YEA! Whimsy bags should not just be HBC’s territory, and these are perfect for non-HBC women!

    • lrhoff

      I love them ALL!!!!

    • Sunshine16

Yea on any of the round bags, love them!  Nay on the big lips.  Feh on the rest of them, they’d be cute once & then be done.

    • formerlyAnon

YEA, selectively. As stated, these are for those whose handbag collection is counted by the dozen. And that woman I shall never be. But were I here I’d go for the domino, the rotary dial, the clock face or the relatively unembellished ones.  Dislike the lips.

    • sleepycat

yea and I want the hot pink lips one.

    • mmc2315

NAY.  I’m not opposed to whimsical bags, but these are a miss. Close, but still a miss.

    • http://twitter.com/mcglory13 mcglory13

    • sleah_in_norcal

YES YES YES!  too bad cinderella didn’t have the clock to carry to the ball.  would also work on the red carpet for an alice in wonderland reference.  love it.  and the abstracted faces are cute and edgy. also love those red striped gloves!

    • mjude

YEA. domino & clock bag please.

    • MilaXX

I love nearly all of these, but a few cross the line into kitschy for me.
      I guess that’s a YAY! for me.

      • Monabel

        Kitsch as wit….

    • kolokOlchik

      An enthusiastic YAY!

    • http://twitter.com/A_SmallFry AC

That Picasso looking one kinda creeps me out. Overall though, Yea. I really like the clock, the rotary phone, the domino and the keyhole ones.

    • ccm800

      Hell Yea

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1567631327 Midge Andrews

Very Lulu Guiness. I’d take the clock one — a little Alice in Wonderland, but cute.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

I’m going to be a buzzkill and call tacky.

    • altalinda

Yay, as long as we’re spending fantasy money.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

YEA! J’adore! Except that if they open down the middle (as it looks like most of them do), they aren’t very practical as carriers of things. The first time I dumped my stuff all over the sidewalk I would put a pox on all these bags!

    • http://twitter.com/keljokob Kel of the Pop Tarts

Yea for sure! I’d kill to own the blue bag with the puzzle piece on it. Fierce!

    • Anathema_Device

Kinda yea? As in, if I saw someone with one, I’d think it was kind of fun, but I’d probably not buy one, even if I could afford it.

However, looking again, I would carry the blue round one in the second to last row, and the black round one in the last row. The rest are a little too cartoonish for me. I’ll leave them for Katy Perry.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MNMVM2GPVUEIOJXBOSLCXKAW4U judy brown

Clutches are a pain in the ass for daily use, in my opinion.

However…these are fun, especially for evening.

    • howdoilook

Total YAY, in every sense of the world. So playful and colorful yet chic!

    • TheAutisticStepmom

Nay.  Too childish.  Like when I was in high school and carried a metal lunch box instead of a purse.

    • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

      YES! Oh god yes!

    • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986?hl=en&tab=h Judy S

Actually these remind me of those Valentino bags for men from last month. Small, bright, and a little awkward to carry…. I don’t see why you guys couldn’t carry one of these.

    • AthenaJ

Whimsical is right, these bags are very fun and playful. The ones with the lips freak me out, but I totally dig the domino and locket.

    • TheOriginalLulu

They’ve definitely got a young feel to them, but hey. A little whimsy never hurt nobody, right? The only one I give a NAY to is the clock one. Anything with massive clocks always reminds me of Flava Flav and that’s never a good thing.

That dress with the hands is so awesome. I want.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1264609232 Samantha Ritchie

      YEA. LOVE. WANT.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Nay – I just don’t care for any of them.  Just my opinion, of course. Now that black and white “hands” dress – I want that soooo much!!

    • StrandedFashionista

Yay to the Heart, Lips, and Keyhole.

    • fallen_ikon

I really, really love the clock bag. Love it. If I had the money, I’d buy that in a heartbeat.

    • cheesebomb

I love the one with the teal ring on it, but I would try and set it down vertically like a regular purse instead of on the flat side and it would roll away.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1077090078 Megan Sullivan

So fun. Would love to own a couple.

    • Monabel

It was great when Schiap. did it, it’s great now.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

i also like the clock one the best. i wish some of these had shoulder straps or even semi-shoulder straps, those short straps that arent supposed to be shoulder straps but make life much easier when one breaks down & uses them that way.

very vintage ysl, this collection, the whole of it, not just the bags. one of her better, lately & one of her least like herself, oddly. as an aside re: the bags, i’ve had one or another of some similar before. one or another of some similar, in fact, might still be in the garage. as an aside re: everything else, crazyspouse is in open heart surgery right now. or at least he was when they took him in at noon. my guess is he isnt out yet but i will call again soon. what a day.

      • Chaiaiai

whoo girl, hope everything is okay over there!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

I would disembowel for the domino bag.

    • http://twitter.com/BeBeWhy BeBeWhy

      The domino bag is MINE.

    • kimmeister

Mostly yea.  The lips, dice, and hearts are too much.  I love the keyhole and the clock though.

    • VioletFem

Hell YEA! Love every single piece, especially the lips, domino, and puzzle clutches.

    • hellkell

I’d commit a minor felony for either the domino or clock face bag.

      • Sally Brownson

         Those are the one’s I’m after too…

    • michelle shields

Very cute and I love DVF but too small for me. I carry too much crap.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=610879738 Kira Lewallen

I just fell even more in love with you guys because you used the word “hella.”
Additionally, I love the puzzle piece bag!

    • gabbilevy

Ooh! Yay! And Yea! Domino, clock and green circle. AdORBs.

    • Lynn Landry

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1094686382 Elizabeth Monroe Baker

      Dice bag FTW.

    • http://shootingshoes.wordpress.com Amanda Gun

I do think that the lips bags would work with a formal outfit though! There’s a slightly 80’s feel to some of these, but not the manic neon 80’s that mostly comes to mind. The bag in the third row with one eye and a pair of lips especially reminds me of some artist (no idea of the name so I can’t be more specific than that) who I know my mother liked when I was tiny (so early 90’s, perhaps). I love at least 90% of these bags and I’d definitely get them if I wasn’t poor! The only ones I’d leave are the phone, the cloud bag and that mint green round thing; all the rest are super cute.

    • http://blue-again.myopenid.com/ blue

The red and blue circle bags are ok. The rest look like novelty items from a tacky tourist shop.

    • Kirsten Kirsten

They look fabulous, but those round and rectangular ox shaped ones look as though they split in half to open. Totally impractical. Keys, phone, tampons, tissues, lipstick flying everywhere!

    • http://twitter.com/Eovaai Eovaai

YEA. I need to own the clock one!

    • Lola67

Yea!  I’m partial to the hot pink one with gold lips.

    • CatherineRhodes

It’s all a bit too childish and gimmicky.

    • AuntieAnonny

      Love the Great Gatsby one.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I love them all. Please send the clock and the keyhole — okay, the two keyholes — over to my house ASAP.

    • another_laura

I’ve gotta go with Nay on whimsical bags. “Juvenile” is the right word. I will say that at least these look as though you could actually get a lipstick and credit cards into them, which is a deviation from many collections of whimsical bags. Still, Nay.

    • crash1212

OH MY GOD! I love every one of them. Every one. A structured, whimsical bag makes me giddy. Can’t help it. I also covet that ‘handsy’ dress in the first panel…also those shoes. DVF is a doll and I’d love to have lunch with her.

    • DominoEstella

      Very Lulu Guinness.

    • quiltrx

A big ol’ YEA!  The clock is my favorite, followed by the telephone.  But they’re all awesome.

    • xmixiex

love the clock. and betsey j has been making clutches with lips like that …forever.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SEQSTTROV2O3U5WCMP5GUI2CTA Laura

YEA!  Oh how I love the DIAL!

    • Pterodactyl111

      YEAAAAA I want the clock.

    • http://twitter.com/BeantownMrs Praggya R. Barretto

Yea! Love the rotary dial, the clock, and the heart.

    • girliecue

A big YAY to all but the hearts and lips. YAY rather than Yea because this collection is so fun and delightful! Whimsical, yes, but also chic and gorgeous.

    • siriuslover

I love the clock. And I think Helena Bonham Carter may very well use some of these!

    • librarygrrl64

Nay. In my 20s (in the 80s) they would have been a big YAY for me, but now? Too kitschy.

    • Dagney

Did DVF hire a bunch of craft store groupies?

    • http://twitter.com/moodring54 Rachel

    • http://www.facebook.com/carrie.l.boram Carrie L. Boram

They look sort of awkward and clunky, even amateurish to me. How are these DVF? The mind boggles…

    • kingderella

      good god they are fab!

    • aristida_girl

Yea! I love the circular ones, especially the ones in the solid colors, but the others are fun too…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Annie-Moore/100001926969049 Annie Moore

      So much YEA!

    • Truly_Outrageous

YEA!!! 100% YEA. If I was a women with money to spend I would get the one that looks like a giant lock, the green circular one, the rotary phone, the clock and (of course) the domino. I think I made a comment on that one a while back. Basically I would get all the really silly and fun pieces.

    • http://twitter.com/pag_baj Paige Boerman
