Cover Girl: Dakota Fanning for Wonderland Magazine

Posted on March 28, 2012

All right, Dakota! Now THIS is what we’re talking about!

Dakota Fanning covers the April/May 2012 issue of Wonderland magazine photographed by Cedric Buchet in Emporio Armani.

We bitch at her sometimes for making some rather odd style choices now and then. And while we wouldn’t suggest she doll herself up like a shopgirl in 1910 and shove a rat in her hair, there’s something so adorable here, so “can’t take your eyes off her” that we kinda wish she’d take a page from Helena Bonham Carter’s book. Try to cultivate a look a little off the beaten path of normal starlet looks, ‘koty. You can go from bland to unique with just a little effort.

We never noticed it before, but she’s really made for this sort of period look. She’s got the huge round eyes and tiny lips that Ur-Hollywood found so devastating in actresses like Mary Pickford and the Gishes.

Dakota, you’ve got money. If you had half a brain you’d option a Gish sister biopic pronto. We’re just sayin’, is all. It’s not like you ever listen to your gay uncles when they have excellent advice for you or anything.

 Really cute look too.

I didn’t realize there was an ACTUAL mouse in her hair until I scrolled back up for a second look–thought you were just referring to her rat’s nest. LOL!

    She is adorable, though.

    • BerlinerNYC

Hilarious—I thought the exact same thing. I only scrolled back up because of your comment! :-)

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZBFH32YG44LIIZYLSQPMBXMYCU Sarah

Yeah that mouse is weirdly non-prominent. I was just going back up to check on the “tiny lips” comment, and whoa! A rodent! You’ve got an amazing pic if there’s a mouse on your head and all people can see is your pretty face!

        • ballerinawithagun

I was so distracted by her gorgeous eyes that I missed the rat also! How could that happen???

          • http://twitter.com/sanja_ramic sanja_ramic

Same here, didn’t notice it until I scrolled back up, which I think speaks volumes about how beautiful and interesting her face is.

    • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

Yeah, they used to refer to the use of pads that built up a woman’s hairstyle as “ratting,” so I assumed that was a reference. I mean, maybe the ACTUAL rat is, in which case: well done, stylist! I always appreciate a clever literal pun.

      • http://twitter.com/AbbottRabbit AbbottRabbit

I thought the same thing — I learned that from reading the Betsy-Tacy books when I was a wee young thing, and wondered if the boys had picked it up from the same place.

        • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

Heh, I got it from Louisa May Alcott’s An Old-Fashioned Girl – and found the text online to double-check my facts. :D

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=564839755 Jillian Liszewski

Me too!!!  I love Betsy-Tacy.  LOVE.

And how cute must your face look when I fail to notice a mouse on it?

  • dress_up_doll

I love it! But when did rats become fashionable? Is this a “thing” now?

    • calimon

oh, please let’s not say that out loud; someone’s gonna take that and run with it >.<

  • TheOriginalLulu

She really does look striking when she’s all done up. I agree that she should be a little more bold with her style. Leave the generic blonde look for more generic-looking blondes.

  • Pants_are_a_must

The make up is almost Adele-esque, but she’s werqing it. Nice cover!

    • http://heartprintandstyle.blogspot.com Vivi N

Exactly! I’m really getting an Adele vibe with the makeup.

I love me some Fanning sisters!

  • Eclectic Mayhem

Is there a third Fanning sister?  If they don’t fancy playing Lillian and Dorothy they could always option the story of the Talmadges.  Norma and Constance were huge, HUGE stars back in the day but now it’s their “lowly, comic” brother-in-law Joseph Frank “Buster” Keaton) who is remembered and celebrated.

    Great cover btw.

  • siriuslover

She has beautiful eyes. I could do without the rat.

  • hmariec19

The makeup is TO. DIE.  She looks really great here.

  • EliseC

    Wow.  This is gorgeous.

  • http://twitter.com/MandySCG MandyJane

Now I’ve got Bette Davis Eyes stuck in my head!

  • serenitynow02

I’ve been really tired of seeing her, but I like her in this new light. I’m thinking she could make an interesting Eliza Dolittle.

    • kimmeister

Ha, yeah a straw hat with bric-a-brac attached does lend itself to thoughts of Eliza Doolittle!

  • http://twitter.com/wonderdivaEtsy wonderdivaEtsy

You guys so nailed it.  I’m a silent movie freak and the first thing that came to mind was the pre-flapper Pickford/Gish look.

  • http://twitter.com/wonderdivaEtsy wonderdivaEtsy

And a biopic of the innocent-looking but naughty Gish sisters would be tasty.

  • Anathema_Device

Cute shot. It catches the eye so much more than the celebrity magazine covers you usually post here. I really like that hat in the runway shot and need to see whether I can afford it or whether I should start scouting for a knock-off.

  • Judy_J

She really does look like Lillian Gish in that cover shot.

  • mjude

little girl you are adorable, please listen to your gay uncles

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZMU2QQUTAUEPU23MUTZBQ5W2PI Peter

I’m sorry… I think she looks really sweet, but all I can see is Honey Boo Boo Child from Toddlers and Tiaras.

I don’t know what that says about my life, but it can’t be good.

    • alyce1213

I was really liking this until I read that — you are so right.
      I still like it.
But I’m still laughing from your keen observation.

  • msdamselfly

Look is good but facial expression weird

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mary-Stone/100001328135240 Mary Stone

wowzers, a LITERAL rat in her hair…thank jeebus I had just swallowed the mouthful of coffee I had or I’d have a lot of ‘splainin’ to do to our IT guy about why I’d shorted out the second keyboard in as many months…gotta stop looking at TLo at work…

  • BrooklynBomber

Wouldn’t that be something! The Fanning sisters as the Gish sisters. Let’s see, who to play Mary Pickford, D.W. Griffith, Douglas Fairbanks. . . ??

    • Eclectic Mayhem

      Ooooh, oooh – fun game!

Pickford…  I was trying to avoid her since she’s so prominent in the public eye right now but Jennifer Lawrence has the same kind of sweet face as Ms P.

Doug Sr – tricky… but I’m going to go with Mark Strong.  I think he can buckle his swash judging by the excellent fight choreography in Stardust.

      Griffith – James Cromwell

By the way – the first, and probably the BEST, film book on my groaning film bookcase is Adventures with DW Griffith by Karl Brown.  He was DoP Billy Bitzer’s assistant on Birth of a Nation and Intolerance and it is astonishingly good.  Oh to have been there right at the birth of the motion picture industry!  The story of how Kevin Brownlow tracked Brown down is also pretty interesting.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

Ah – it seems that one can no longer hot/hyper what-ever-it’s called link in a post anymore – sorry TLo!

My post that’s lost somewhere in moderation land said:

      Oooh, oooh – fun game!

Mary Pickford – Scarlett Johansson has the same kind of sweet, pointy chinned face and (though I was trying to avoid her because she’s everywhere right now) so does Jennifer Lawrence.

Doug Sr. – tricky but I’m going with Mark Strong.  He’ll need a toupe but he can definitely buckle his swash, if the fight choreography in Stardust is anything to go by.

      Griffith – James Cromwell.

      • BrooklynBomber

Very nice. Though maybe SJ is too old; Lillian Gish & Mary Pickford were born a year apart, so it probably has to be someone closer in age to Dakota. Abigail Breslin perhaps.  Here’s a nice picture of Pickford: http://www.marypickford.com/library/about-mary-pickford/136

  • SpcilK

I love her face she looks like a young Betty Davis.

    • Chaiaiai

      Agreed!  Amazing eyes.

  • MilaXX

It’s nice because it’s a different look for her, but I’d be more impressed if she cut her hair into a shaggy bob like the model.

  • AthenaJ

Dakota’s rat makes me think of Carrie’s wedding headpiece from the SATC movie – “I put a BIRD on my head!!”

  • ASK26

In a close up look I see a little Adele

  • http://angryfemur.tumblr.com Andrea Lane

She should really consider this kind of hair in a more permanent fashion; her stick straight part-down-the-center is just not doing it anymore.

  • VicksieDo

I adore this girl, I think she’ll be a major actress for many many years to come.

  • KaileeM

Uh, you guys should pitch a Gish sister biopic ASAP. I would LOVE to see that!

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

    That hat! I DIE.

  • pawtley

Wow, what a difference some eyeliner makes.

  • Susan Crawford

LOVE THIS! She is adorabilina – and by going a bit bizarre, she ups the ante considerably. And about that Gish picture? What a FABULOUS idea.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Fierce as shit.  She really should consider having her hair done like that, it totally suits her.

  • granddelusion

    WTF?

  • judybrowni

I could rock that hat, here’s to it coming to Forever 21 like soon.

  • NurseEllen

I think they used to call them “bee stung” lips, and yes, she does indeed have that look.  I could do without the rat, though.

    • Adriana_Paula

      Cupid’s bow?

  • rawrgrowlrawr

This is probably one of my favorite covers ever posted here. This look suits her so well, I love the hat and blouse and THOSE EYES. Gorgeous.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

    Best she’s ever looked!

  • formerlyAnon

She is beautiful here. Listen to your gay uncles, dear.

  • http://cinerarium.wordpress.com/ VickyVengeance

Is it just me or does she not look eerily similar to Tammie Brown from RPDR Season 1?

  • Sophie Collier

Reminds me of Twiggy a bit too.  Big, big eyes, little bitty nose.

    • Lisa

True, but not so similar that it doesn’t work for her, I think.

  • http://twitter.com/Eovaai Eovaai

She looks fantastic here. Definitely her look (minus the mouse)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Her face is so beautiful I didn’t even notice the rat until TLo mentioned it.  Love it.

    • j_anson

Agreed, I was like, “Rat? Do they mean the pompoms on the hat? Oh, hey, an actual rat.”

      • a_liking

I did the same…. -__- had quite a few moments of confusion before I spotted it.

  • PrunellaV

If you had half a brain you’d option a Gish sister biopic pronto.

    Brilliant, TLo. Hope she listens.

  • elemspbee

    ugh rat.
She’s looks a lit’l bit like Bette Davis here, no?

  • elemspbee

    ugh rat.
She’s looks a lit’l bit like Bette Davis here, no?

  • PeaceBang

    J’adore the whole thing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=555593309 Alexis Peñafuerte Wenceslao

Tammie Brown gracing the cover of Wonderland magazine?  LOVE!

  • TieDye64

Effing adorable! Though I’d never have seen the little mouse if I hadn’t done a full read-through.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I did not even see the mouse/rat thing.  Her face was too compelling for me to notice anything else.

  • PhillipWilde

Gorgeous.  Dakota should do stuff like this much more often.

  • http://twitter.com/carelessriver Cassie (C.M.W.)

There are rats and there are rats. I thought TLo were referring to the sort that were made of human hair and stuffed into hairdos to make them pouf out–very popular in that era. Then I saw the rodent.

    Which is cuuuuuuute!
