Chloë Moretz for Vanity Fair Italia

Posted on March 23, 2012

Tiny little fashion sprite Chloë Moretz is  featured in the latest issue of Vanity Fair Italia, darlings.

And she looks adorable.

Just a kid playing dressup and posing with a giant key. Can’t we all relate?

Those silver shoes are KILLA.

she comes dangerously close to duckface a couple times.

    • ccm800

her lips have always been that way

  • JasmineAM

    I just can’t with the duck mouth/lips.

Also, I could have sworn she was 14(?) ? The crotch shot is disgusting

    • Glammie

Yep, since the only thing I’ve seen her in is Hugo and that was only a month ago that shot was a little disturbing.

      • Pablo Ulloa

well, you need to see Kick Ass

    • EcstaticEgg

It’s not a “crotch shot”! She’s wearing very masculine pants. Its not at all sexual. That pose is authoratitive if anything. Why is everyone trying to see sexual imagery where there is none?

      • Denny Li

“authoratitive” [sic]?! She’s leaning back so her pelvis is pushed forward and framed at the front and center of the photograph. I’m just thankful the pants are loose.

    • angryparsnip

I so agree, I am so tired of all the crotch shots.

    • Sara Munoz

Normally, I tend to agree about these things, but this time I’m with Ecstatic Egg. She’s wearing masculine clothes, mimicking a masculine pose. It’s a body language thing. Men sit with their legs spread, to assert dominance, whereas women tend to sit in a manner that takes up as little space as possible.
In a different outfit and setting, I would feel much differently. The only thing remotely sexual in the whole shoot is the silver shoes, and she’s not even wearing them in the “crotch shot”.

    • Megan Patterson

I think she is 15 now.

  • Alyson Lamble

Love the silver shoes and the coats, but not wild about either of the trouser outfits.

  • NinaBoo

The open leg post kind of skeeves me out, but that child has a fierce set of eyebrows.

  • Kevin VanOrd

Love it all except for the legs-splayed military look. They played a bit with gender expectations, which I like; that one went a bit too far for me though.

  • reddhouston

    Love this!

  • Anna Maria Diamanti

I have to laugh: in that pic of her close up with the brown suspenders, she looks like an American Girl Doll.

    • kimmeister

      Croc-print suspenders, no less!

  • Frank_821

Actually the spread has a subtle steampunk flavor it. Just enough to make it interesting without detracting

    • Leah Elzinga

just watched Hugo and it definitely feels like they referenced her role there.  This could be straight out of that movie’s costume dept.

      • siriuslover

        I agree.

  • sleepycat

maybe she is a borrower in relation to the key 😛

  • Ennovi_R

the only bad one is the close up.. she looks strange. The rest are beautiful!

  • foodycatAlicia

Something about this reminds me of Bugsy Malone-era Jody Foster.

    • lundibleu

That, and also there’s a couple where she’s looking really quite like Carey Mulligan. Strange, as normally they look absolutely nothing alike, but … yeah.

  • choco

Her lips look botoxed. She’s styled up to look 30 something. She’s attempting to smize like some seductive strumpet. Maybe this could have worked if she weren’t trying so hard to look like some big a-list actress and just acted her age.

  • crash1212

I want a big key and large pliers…and that striped top. Please.

  • Shelf Afterlife

My first thought: Those silver shoes are TDF!  Glad you guys agree :)

  • Cortney Dean

OOh, I see hints of Victoria Beckham in some of these shots. She looks fantastic.

  • ivypoison

Love these pics!! They’re definitely playing with gender roles; which is why the “crotch shot”(as some of you are calling it) did not bother me. It’s trying to simulate the way a guy sits, not being seductive/inappropriate IMHO. If she was wearing an itty-bitty dress, on the other hand, it would be a different story……

    • Rei Carter

I felt the same way. It read more as 1940’s tough tomboy rather than anything else.

  • Dr Skylaser

    Crotchshot.  Duckface.  No good.

You’re right on the silver shoes, though.

  • NurseEllen

Those silver shoes may make me rethink my attitude toward ankle straps.  Not that I could ever wear them, but usually they make me groan in distaste.  The photos are wonderful with the B&W and sepia tones, save for the close up, which kind of blows the whole ethic of styling her to be much older than her years.  But mostly, molto bella!

  • Laura Schultz

Young lady knows how to werq it.

  • Gayer Than Thou

She is giving Hitler youth realness here.  It makes me uneasy.

  • nannypoo

I love this. She has an unusual but beautiful face and these pictures capture it. She has made some bad fashion choices on the red carpet, or bad fashion choices have been made for her, so it’s nice to see her in fabulous clothes. Well, maybe not the crotch shot.

  • Dejah_Thoris

I NEED those silver shoes. Those and a blood sacrifice should do the trick to turn me into Ginger Rogers, but I’ll take the rest of the clothes in consolation in the event that the sacrifice doesn’t work.

  • Ass Kicking Adviser

It’s probably just because it is Friday and I’m tired but I am feeling reticent that that child is wearing a coat (pic 1) that was clearly meant for me.
She’s very cute. Love the suspenders. blah, blah, blah…give me my frickin’ coat you impudent little tadpole!

  • rawrgrowlrawr

Is it wrong to have a child on my Irrational Hate list? Because she is definitely on mine. I fear it makes me a bad person.

    • serenitynow02

She’s not on my irrational hate list, but she’s definitely on my Tremendously Overexposed for a Fourteen Year Old list.

And the crotch shot above, I find both vulgar and inappropriate for a young girl her age, I don’t care how “sophisticated” or “grown-up” she might be…

      • Glammie

I have a pretty young daughter just a couple of years younger, so I’m having a real yuck reaction that way.  This girl is very young.

      • turtleemily

I worked for Sears Portrait Studio one holiday season, and the first thing my manager told me during training was NEVER have an open crotch shot straight-on to the camera, so I wince every time I see one from a “professional” photographer. Having it with a 14 year old just makes it worse.

    • Felicia

Bad person? Neah. Stupid? probably …

      • rawrgrowlrawr

I know you were aiming to be rude, but I don’t really mind that much. The internet is home to opinions and snark (myself being a frequent contributor as well). :)

        • RBinTexas

           Graciously handled, rgr.

    • nannypoo

      Yeah, it’s bad. She’s 14 for god’s sake.

      • Shelly H

Oh please. Being tired of an over-exposed celebrity to the point of dislike isn’t a crime. It isn’t personal, and “irrational hate” usually doesn’t mean literal hate. How could it; it’s not like anyone here actually knows her. Besides, Chloe strikes me as a very together 14 year old who probably doesn’t care that some random blog commentator doesn’t like her.

      • rawrgrowlrawr

Yeah, I’m feeling awful for saying I dislike a kid. She just reminds me so much of the girls at my little brother’s school. They drive me batty. So I will retract my feelings of hatred and replace it with annoyance, which I think is a fair reaction to a celebrity no matter what age.

        • nannypoo

Well, we can all relate to that.

        • accidental housewife

I get the annoyance at over-exposed celebrities, and, well, 14-year-olds can be kind of naturally irritating. I was feeling definitely some annoyance at Elle Fanning’s over-exposure a couple months ago, when she was popping up every single day, or it seemed like it anyway.

I just can’t bring myself to criticize them, especially the girls, who are under so much scrutiny over how they look, how they dress, how much they weigh, etc. Most of my irritation is aimed at the people behind the scenes – agents, managers, magazine editors, parents. I think about Drew Barrymore and Mackenzie Phillips, and how no one was paying attention, and how there were plenty of people willing to take them to clubs and let them drink and do drugs. Nobody took care of them. And I wish that everyone involved could be thrown in jail just for being complete assholes.

I suppose that’s something of an overreaction to a really good fashion editorial featuring a young actress who seems to have her head on straight. Rant over.

          • rawrgrowlrawr

That’s a really good point and one that I definitely didn’t consider. I’ve never really thought about just how many people have input into this girl’s life.

But this is what it comes down to for me: “14-year-olds can be kind of naturally irritating.” The other day when I went to pick my little brother up from school, he told me the girls were talking behind my back as if I were their competition. I am 22. I do not have any desire to compete with teenagers, yet they automatically cast me as an enemy because I’m female. I just wanted to tell them all to calm down and wait a few years before letting the claws out.

I think my knee-jerk reaction to Ms. Moretz is that, much like my brother’s peers, she always looks like she is trying so damn hard to be sexy and sophisticated. I need to remind myself that it is simply a symptom of youth. I apologize if I offended anyone with my former child hate! ‘Twas a miscommunication.

          • accidental housewife

I hope it didn’t seem like I was laying into you. It’s just that the list of damaged child stars is too long to measure. It’s always made to look so pretty on the outside, you know? So, my apologies for coming on too strong.

RE: the girls at your brother’s school. Good lord, that’s crazy. Are teenagers just meaner than they used to be? Maybe I wasn’t paying attention when I was in high school, but I don’t remember that sort of behavior. I mean, there were cliques, but they weren’t so tight that there wasn’t any crossover. And the drama among the “stars”, as we called them, wasn’t something I had first hand knowledge of, even though I had a couple of friends in that group. (The First Rule of … well, you know)

Anyway, it seems like teenagers are worse now, or maybe they’re just more open about it.

          • rawrgrowlrawr

I asked my little brother if all of the girls in his grade were like that. His response: “Only the ones who have nothing else going for them besides being mildly pretty.” I love that boy.

  • Cassie

FABULOUS. Off the beaten path and showcases her unusual beauty, and she TOTALLY werqs the whole thing. This kid has a real future as a model/fashionista.

  • MandyJane

Love it, duck face and all!

  • MsOlympia

I am beginning to think that her special version of duck face is au naturel.  Even when her mouth is open she has it!  How can it be an affectation?  What is the world coming to?!

    • Cassie

Yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s just how her mouth is.

  •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I’m going to hell for stealing a pair of shoes from a 15 year old kid.  Je ne regrette rien!

  • kcarb1025

She just looks  like someone cloned Hayden Pantyteary.

  • ballerinawithagun

Must have the silver shoes. Since Mondo’s didn’t have heels.

  • Rand Ortega

Is it me or is Miss Chloe growing up to be Meg Ryan when MR was OMG- I -can’t- stand- it- baby- duck- adorable & I had to watch everything she did?

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Her “fashion” duckface cracks me up. I’d let you come over and play with my niece anytime, Moretz. I might even bake cookies.

  • Lisa

Androgynous but still feminine!  I like it.  And the silver shoes in the second picture are FABULOUS!

And at the risk of sounding like a total suck up, it’s always so nice to come home to this board.  I can view it at work, but the posting function doesn’t work on our work computers.  So I miss out on all the fun till I can get home!

  • Shelly H

She is adorable, duckface and all. Yes duckface is horrific, but she’s 14, and it’s refreshing to see her looking 14 and not an over-sexed and over-styled 35. Dress her up in sophisticated coats and to-die-for shoes, and she’s still a teenage girl thinking if she pouts she’ll look sexy.

  • MilaXX

I’m not a fan f her, but I think this is a good editorial for her. Besides she only did duck face and ‘O” mouth  once which is a step up for her. I also get the steam punk/HUGO vibe from this.

  • ccm800

    Gorgeous spread! NICE!

  • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

this is the best layout i have ever seen of someone so young.

  • rainwood1

If she’s fourteen, the crotch shot and open lips/come hither poses are totally inappropriate.  That goes for any other fourteen year models as well and if Terry Richardson shot this, I’d be even more skeeved out.  The silver shoes are a little too flamenco for me.

  • rumcg66

My first thought was “I want those shoes.”  They are, indeed, killa.

  • Anne Lucchesi

That first picture finally made my brain connect and now when she pouts her lips like that all I can see is Cher from “Clueless”. And I am completely saying that as a compliment.

  • eight_of_nine

Wow, little girlfriend is giving FACE.  Someday she will play Cate Blanchette in a biopic.

  • quiltrx

Her face is a little too tan-in-the-can, but otherwise nice pics.  Love the coats.

  • granddelusion

Ah, the spread for pedophiles. She’s how old and wearing come-fuck-me-shoes?

  • Amelia Harvey

Am I the only one who didn’t think this spread was an attempt to sexualize a 14 year old?  The “crotch shot” is clearly a play on the fact that she is dressed in a more masculine outfit so she is sitting more like a man would.  It isn’t like she’s in a miniskirt and almost flashing.  And those silver shoes, while lovely, are most definitely not CFM pumps.

    • Celandine1

No you’re not the only one. I don’t see anything sexually provocative about the “crotch shot” or any of the other pictures. It is as you clearly stated, a play on the masculine clothes and attitude. I also get a bit of an Amelia Earhart vibe from that shot and could see her hanging out with Katherine Hepburn on the set Christopher Strong (LUV HUH her and that movie). The shoes are fantastic and not even close to CFM shoes (and they sure look FABULOUS with the coat in the second picture!). The comparisons to Terry Richardson photos and pedophile porn is utter nonsense.

I also want that telephone in that first picture! I guess I will be spending the weekend scouring antique shops and flea markets now, damn.

    • Molly

No! I was thinking the same thing, these commentors are a bunch of perves for seeing something sexual in these shots. When I was 14 I sat like that “crotch shot” all. the. time. Why? Not because I was trying to turn someone on, but because at the time it was just a comfortable laid back way to sit and I was sort of a tomboy. Ick, I hate to think people are seeing this as overtly sexual or disturbing in any way. Clean up your dirty minds, folks!

      • nancylee61

I find the photo a sexualization of a young girl, and find it offensive that you assume we who are more sensitive to this are perverts and have dirty minds. They could have posed her a thousand other ways without putting her crotch to the camera, so I tend to think those who don’t see this as offensive as insensitive to sexualization of young girls. Like being mischaracterized???

        • Ripley4

With the pants she’s wearing she was not going to be crossing her legs.

I’d suggest you are looking for something that isn’t there.

    • EcstaticEgg

Thank you! There’s nothing sexual about that pose. It’s more like a pose of authority. I think the real “disgusting” thing isn’t that picture but that fact people go looking for sexual imagery in a photo of a child where there is none.

      • nancylee61

Yes, we who think that a young girl with her crotch facing the camera is inappropriate are perverts. Yup. Got you. Maybe you should take off those rose-colored glasses?

        • EcstaticEgg

Maybe I don’t see someone in a relaxed position as sexual? I don’t think people who see a sexual vibe here are perverts. I think you’re being alarmist. It’s understandable since child photo shoots in Hollywood are often disgustingly sexual. This isnt one of those cases. I think you’re jaded.

  • beebee10

she takes  great pic! fresh and interesting actor .

  • mhleta

Oh dear. I thought it was a different actress who resembled the kid from Kick Ass. Then I went to a file of images and realized it was her. She definitely had some filler injected into the top lip. Why? She already has the most perfect bee stung lips and now she looks artificial. I also strenuously object to the crotch shot; because of the color of the fabric and the placement of the thick shadow on the seam it looks like her actual vagina is showing. It doesn’t get much more vulgar than that, especially when the subject is a juvenile. A real shame, because otherwise it’s a pretty killer shoot. For images of what she actually looks like go here:

  • Kristinoten

I love it! She still looks young without having done her up in all girly pinks and ruffles.  I’m living for that last outfit, so fun!!

  • Vaniljekjeks

She’s adorable.  She had me at her KickAss performance.

  • Rei Carter

Yeah, I don’t even understand how this could be seen as sexualized at all in expression, pose or dress. I just get a 1930’s-1940’s adventure girl.  I thought it was refreshingly age appropriate.

    • nancylee61

The first thing I thought with the legs spread wide open was “Why???”

  • Pants_are_a_must

Well, she’s only spending 25% of the time blue steeling and smizing, so I call it a victory.

  • Susan Crawford

What a great editorial! Trust the French to bring out the gamine in Chloe! I love the subtle sixties vibe here, and the way classic pieces such as the double-breasted walking coat, the striped poor-boy sweater and traditional sailor pants have been updated and tweaked just a little. Chloe looks . . . well, totally adorable, as always. Thanks for the dose of pretty, TLo!

  •árez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

She’s lovely. Does she have her lips that way naturally or is she constantly pouting and duck-facing? Anyway, I like this editorial.

my best friend’s mother brought in $21675 a week ago. she is getting paid on the computer and bought a $550500 condo. All she did was get blessed and put to use the steps exposed on that link top of this comment

  • Julie Chase

She’s a gorgeous girl, but lately with some of her editorials and her appearance on 30 Rock I worry about “trying hard to grow up too fast” syndrome.

  • CatherineRhodes

Well said, mhleta.  I had exactly the same two complaints: she appears to have had fillers injected into both lips (so pathetic) and the open crotch shot is absolutely vulgar.

  • Dhammadina

    Boots are great too.

  • lordandtaylor

She looks like a next-gen Susan Dey…who also looked a bit “duck lipped” every so often. Is the Bob Dylan hat coming back yet again?

  • Ripley4

You people are hysterical. She hasn’t had anything injected. She’s had full lips for years.

  • plinkiedoodle

I love the atmospheric nature of these photographs.  She’s lovely, the clothes are perfection, the lighting is etherial.   Can’t ask for much more…

  • Shelly H

I honestly don’t get the objection to this photo at all. If they wanted to sexualize her, they could have gone so much further. It’s not like she’s spread-legged — she’s sitting with her knees apart in loose-fitting slacks. The pearl-clutching over this image is bordering on Victorian hysteria.

And 2 things: 1) a vagina is an internal organ — you’re thinking of the vulva, and 2) that you’ve examined this photo so closely so as to see an exposed vulva in it makes me question where YOUR mind is at. I see a 14 year old tomboy. You see exposed vulva… just, wow.

ETA: as far as the lips go, she’s always had full lips. You can’t judge cosmetic work from an editorial, because between make-up and lighting and Photoshopping, there’s no way to tell what’s real and what’s been manipulated.

    • accidental housewife

I’ve noticed over the past couple of years that some people (and I’m not talking specifically about my fellow kittens/poodles/PUFs, although it happens here too) are obsessed with seeing “lady bits” in everything. Maybe I’m the one without an imagination, but it seems to me that if there’s any kind of pattern on a piece of clothing, someone will visualize a “vagina”, or something pointing to a vagina, or something highlighting a vagina. I’m not even shocked anymore. It’s gotten tiresome.

As for the photo, people are going to interpret that differently (says the Queen of the Obvious). I’m inclined to go with the “tomboy” interpretation, but I can see why it might bother some folks, considering how eager photographers/editors etc are to sexualize young girls.

    • nancylee61

I, too, find that shot off-putting. You attack the messenger, because they think differently than you do. Very non-TLo. We Victorian hysterics are not perverts when a young girl is photographed with open legs, crotch to camera. It is suggestive. They could have photographed her a thousand other ways, but they chose this shot. And…just, wow, your insults assure that people will not want to respond freely here, and that is a shame.

  • Natalie

I really love those silver shoes, and that coat is to DIE FOR. I love this editorial. Not creepy, very chic.

  • Pterodactyl111

She’s so hilarious in 30 Rock.

  • formerlyAnon

    I’ll take coat #2.

Silver shoes are cute. As is she.

  • Emily

Love the silver shoes and the giant key!

  • RzYoung

….hmm, no, the pouty face is doing my head in now.

  • lilazander

as you said., gents, “Those silver shoes are KILLA,” and I want them NOW (at least in my dreams).

  • nancylee61

Adorable girl, don’t know who she is, but she is beautiful. Don’t like that picture of this young girl with her legs spread open. It gives me a bad feeling.

  • nancylee61

I agree with you – on everything but the lips, because I don’t even know who this kid is, so I don’t know what she looked like before.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Enh, I think she’d look a lot more adorable if she’d only stop making ducklips at the camera.
    The clothes are fabulous.

  • Daniel Wheeler

that girl couldn’t be any cuter if she tried

  • Sunshine16

A little ducky in the first few pics, but I’ll let that slide…this is the best she’s ever looked!

  • guest2visits

love the coats, the hats, think she very pretty and unique looking. I like the way they chose to style her pics 1-5.
