Cathy Cambridge Steps Out With Gramma Betty

Posted on March 13, 2012

This is so freaking adorable we could just scream:

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge joins Queen Elizabeth II for the Diamond Jubilee tour of the UK. Catherine wore jacket and dress by L. K. Bennett.

That skinny little commoner is turning us into full-on Anglophiles, it seems. We’ll get to her in a second. We just wanted to take a moment to tell Betty that we dig her crazy hat and beat-up, sensible shoes.

Jude Jacket by L.K. Bennett

Davina Dress by L. K. Bennett

We think that’s a great dress and a great jacket, but the combination of the two makes the area around her neck and shoulders look awfully fussy. Aside from that, no other complaints. The color’s great on her and we like that the jacket has full-length sleeves that flare out a tiny bit at the wrist. That’s an unexpected little touch that raises this above being merely another all-one-color suit.

That gal’s got some major stems on her; that’s for sure. It must kill her that she can’t wear a mini every now and then just to show them off.

EEEEEEEEEE! (That’s me screaming because they’re so freaking adorable.)

  • Kyle Crawford

We can hope , since hubby is off for a couple of months, that the two of them have already done their duty for Queen and Country and we will see our Miss Cate in some maternity soon!

    • Jase37206

Calm down, let them enjoy life  a tad before a baby comes.

      • sagecreek

While I agree, they are not exactly a normal couple; I’m sure there is pressure to ensure the line or something.

      • mochajava13

Agree, but I think they got married to produce a kid.   He’s a royal and she’s now 30. (I started trying at 31, and found to my dismay that fertility sinks like a stone in the early 30s, and had to go through treatments.)

    • TheDivineMissAnn

Maybe they’re giving Charles and Camilla a chance to produce offspring first

      • crackineggs

Camilla in maternity wear.  TLo better get ready with some WERQ posts….

Cheers for the hilarious night cap.

    • annieanne

They’re not going to do anything about a baby til after Grandma Betty’s Jubilee is over. They don’t want to take the spotlight away from her.

  • NC_Meg

I love this outfit so much. I thought the Queen looked great too. Everyone is worried about Kate outshining the Queen then Betty goes and wears hot pink as if to say, “Now who did you say would steal my thunder?”

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Liz has been at this Queen business for 60 years-ain’t nobody gonna steal the show from her!
As  a recovering Anglophile I do  get a kick out of seeing the Queen and Cathy together. They look as if they actually like each other!

      • Andrea Rossillon

Yes, that is the impression that I’ve been getting, too– I bet Betty is glad the way it all worked out, that Wills got to marry the woman he wanted. It’s much easier to like your granddaughter-in-law when your grandson likes her.

      • miwome

“Recovering Anglophile”! A term I didn’t even know I needed. Do you have meetings? Where can I sign up?

        • I don’t need meetings. I can quit anytime I want. Anyway, I do it socially.

          • emeazul

i am actually laughing…not LOLing, for computer’s sake!

  • G

And that omnipresent ring.  She’s got stems and that ring, and she knows how to show it off.  In every picture.

    • Sorry, I don’t meant to jump up your ass about this, but so many people get all up in arms about the ring and apparently today is the day I feel the need to comment: It’s on her finger. Is she supposed to keep her hand behind her back any time a camera might be nearby, just in case it looks like she’s showing off?

      • SapphoPoet

Yes, THIS. Also, I would add that in the second photo, her ring hand is facing downward and the other hand is more visible to the camera. And it’s not her fault that everyone takes a million pictures of her hands with The Ring.

      • Elizabeth Norris

Yeah, I’ve never understood the thing about “showing off” the ring. Here, she’s holding a vase of flowers. Yes, you can clearly see the ring. But that’s only because you can clearly see her hand. Because she’s holding a vase. And in her first solo photo, her right hand is draped over and far more visible than her left, meaning that the ring isn’t nearly as visible as it could be.

I’m just not sure I get it.

        • kcliff

Thank you all for saying this. I am sick of people saying she’s “showing off” too. It’s on her hand. She was engaged, and is now married. The ring symbolizes that. She should be wearing it at all times, and I can only imagine the shitstorm if she stepped out without it! How is she supposed to hide it? Ditto, her legs. Should she wear loose pants and one loose glove?

  • JosephLamour

Wow, she has some muscular calves.

  • rawrgrowlrawr

She is a great palate cleanser after the craptastic looks seen on various red carpets. So lovely and refined.

    • luciaphile

And elegant. It really is a breath of fresh air.

  • basilbasil

This is not pedantry – I’m sure no-one minds what she’s called but, just in case there is some mad royal nitpicker out there – it’s not ‘Catherine, Duchess of York’, it’s just ‘The Duchess of Cambridge’. You’d use just her first name and then the title if she were widowed or divoreced from the Duke. That’s why it’s ‘Sarah, Duchess of York’ rather than ‘The Duchess of York’. Complicated and archaic rules but there you are.

    • Basil Von Broccoli

I’d think a mad royal nitpicker would be more concerned with the title of the post, personally.

    • sagecreek

“Cathy Cambridge” is kind of supposed to violate the rules, I’m pretty sure.

      • luciaphile

I think the comment was in reference to the caption on the photo.

      • While the “Cathy” bit does, it’s an old custom for peers and non-reigning royals to go by their first name and title informally, hence  the princes going by “Henry Wales” and “William Wales” in school and in the RAF. If William had been elevated to the Duke of Cambridge while still in school, he could have gone by William Cambridge.

    • I find it fascinating.  It’s almost impossible for my American mind to keep track of proper titling, but I’m glad when someone points it out.

      • I still think it’s weird that we call former presidents Mr. President too.

        • NC_Meg

I always thought that was weird, too.

  • wildemoose

I don’t want to fuel any pregnancy rumors, because her body=her business, but I can’t help but notice that her hands are blocking the view of her abdomen in every photo…also I love the dress and I love that she’s wearing something that someone like me could just go buy online.

    • NC_Meg

Well in two of them she’s holding a bouquet. But there are several other photos from that day where her arms are by her side.

  • gdougs

I WANT HER LEGS. that is all.

    • schadenfreudelicious

      ditto, and her hair…..

  • jmoss1

She’s so BORING. LK Bennett? Gimme a break. Love Queenie.

  • I am such a fan of a little bit of flare in sleeves. I’m not sure I would have noticed it here without TLo’s eagle eye, though.

Love the combo of the jacket and dress. I’m not finding it too fussy, myself. More like another version of origami in clothes. The hat, on the other hand, is a bit fussy for me. But then again, I’m an American!

    • The jacket hides the ruching on the dress and just makes the skirt look oddly puckered. That dress needs to stand on its on to get the full design.

      • Oh, I don’t disagree. It’d be great to see the dress on its own. I just didn’t think it was that bad as is.

  • Jase37206

Perfect, Perfect, PErfect! I love it. I do kinda agree about the fussy around the neck/shoulder thing. Otherwise, flawless. And the Queen always looks like a grandmotherly Queen should, in my opinion.

    • AudreysMom

and that COLOR on Betty. I don’t know too many 80 somethings sporting that color of pink. Wowsa!

      • Beardslee

I read somewhere that the Queen wears bright colors in public so the crowds can see her.  She looks great in it, too!

  • MilaXX

Cate looks great a usual, but I have to give props to the Queen. I’m digging the hat/coat combo.

  • schadenfreudelicious

i love that they both have such genuine smiles in each others company, it must be a daunting task to do walk-abouts with Her Majesty, The Duchess of Cambridge appears to be more than up to the task.

    • siriuslover

Yeah, I liked that too. Like they’re just HAPPY!

  • MikeW_PHX

Betty seems to having a royal good time here.  Love the hot pink coat.  Nobody’s calling her “dowdy” anytime soon!!

  • butterflysunita

Catherine looks great but I think the Queen outshines her.  Love the hat and the bright pink color!

  • SapphoPoet

I think Catherine is looking a wee bit rumpled in the front; agree with TLo that there’s a bit much going on for everything to lie flat nicely. But it’s a great color on her and I love the view from the back with the peplum (is that the correct term?).

And look at the Queen in hot pink! LOVE the hat.

(Small editorial note: the caption reads: Catherine wore jacket and dress by K.L. Bennett; should be “L.K. Bennett.”)

  • I love the hats! I wish hats would come back in fashion.

  • Chickadeep

H.R.H. Gramma Betty is rocking the Hell out of that hat. It’s full-on New Wave Beefeater! I’m hoping she inherited at least some of her Mother’s crazy Technicolor feather explosion hats and is saving those for extra-special Diamond Jubilee occasions.

  • Cousin_Rose

How DOES she manage to always look like she is having a good time?  Adorable but the flowers are doing a lot of the work in that look.

  • kentiesgirl

Believe it or not, the British press is all about complaining that she IS wearing miniskirts. Just read a bitch-piece about it a week or so ago. They are not so fond of their “Duchess of Dolittle” = commentator’s nicname, not the writers. I like this a lot better than the coat-off with Cammie the other week, HRM Queen Elizabeth II ftw. Because she rocks her look and I love her for it.

That’s the one on this “daring” dress, it’s actually pretty nice about it; can’t find the hatchet job (I think it was about the blue coat, though-actually I’m pretty sure), but it’s all about how they can see her thighs when she gets in and out of cars, and her occasional lack of hosiery.

    • sagecreek

Well, the British press IS noticeably bitchy, isn’t it?

I think she’s pretty much perfect, and I’m ANTI-royal, so that’s saying something.

      • kentiesgirl

Dude, they are scary. Seriously. If you are anti-royalty, they’re your one stop slop shop on everyone but the queen. If you’re anti-celebrity…they gotch you from all angles.

    • Sara__B

Thank you, thank you, for the link. Tons of fabulous photos, and a video!

  • TieDye64

Love this! They look so adorable together and I just love how the Queen looks.

  • I just love them both. Such class. I want that hat (?) – Kate’s, not the Queen’s. 😉

  • The Duchess looks great, but the Queen’s hat is kinda badass.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I’m all about the queen and her Mad Hatter look in the first pic. Adorbs.

  • Jessica Goldstein

That the British press is giving her trouble just goes to show how impossible this job is! Her job is basically PR for a very conservative family firm. And here she is, always nicely turned out but not too flashy, trying to look good while not overshadowing other members of the royal family on their special days (Zara at her wedding; Elizabeth II on her jubilee). She always looks happy to be wherever she is; she never looks tired or crabby. She even looks like she gets along well with her in-laws. And yet, she’s still either too flashy or too boring or too common for someone. I don’t think there’s a woman on the planet who could do this job and not have the UK tabloids after her.

    •  I agree–the UK press doesn’t care who it is, they’ll tear them down. She could be a bloody saint and they’d still find fault.

  • serenitynow02

Maybe it’s just wishful thinking on my part, but those two look like they actually like each other when they are together. It gives me a happy for some inexplicable reason.

    • formerlyAnon

I grew up (in the States) thinking of Queen Elizabeth as a cold parent, overly correct and trained for a world that was more emotionally repressed than ours. This had to have something to do with how she & her children were portrayed in the U.S. press at the time, it’s not as if I or anyone else in my family’s circle cared about the Royals or actually knew a damn thing about them. (and it was 15 to 20-ish years before the Diana Spencer & Sarah Ferguson kerfuffles.)

Now that she’s old, there’s cognitive dissonance in seeing her as a smiley old dear.  But if she’s gotten a grand-daughter-in-law that sets her mind at ease about the family’s future in a way none of her daughters-in-law have done, I hope they can sincerely enjoy each other.

  • TheDivineMissAnn

Not being a person who gushes over “celebrities”, I am embarrassed to admit that this woman can do no wrong in my eyes.  She just seems like a very nice, genuine person.

  • PeaceBang

I don’t like that color on her, and I think the belt is too heavy. But she’s a beautiful, elegant, lovely young lady and always a pleasure to see. The Queen is just precious, and I love how Cathy seems to be tempted to take her royal Grandmum-in-law by the arm lest she topple, but knows that wouldn’t be the right decorum.

  • lucasuk82

Your mini comment makes laugh, because another (more royal oriented) blog I read had comments full of people shrieking about the length of this skirt being too short.  I believe the Cambridges have publicly commented we should not expect any baby announcements until after the London Olympics and the Queen’s Jubilee year.

    • luciaphile

I think I read that same blog as you because I was stunned. To my American eyes, it looks like she’s wearing a very tasteful, chic outfit of suitable length. Apparently some people think she flashes too much leg when she gets out of cars?

    • Elmwood_Neighbor

There is a small, but very emphatic, group of Kate haters.  It’s doesn’t matter what she does, it is wrong.

  • jenno1013

People magazine did a montage of the queen’s hats, one for every year of her reign, and I loved how the recent ones all have that mad hatter shape.  Her dresses may all have essentially the same cut (what Joan Rivers called “a bathrobe,” and that was in the eighties), but her hats have always been of-the-moment.  Adorable!

  • 3boysful

How cute is it that Betty is rocking that hat and simultaneously wearing the shoes she walks the corgis in?

  • CQAussie

Oh freaking hell, gotta love QEII!!  She’s all “Screw this, I’m the bloody Queen, I don’t have to wear shoes that bloody well pinch!”  Loving Kate, she seems to be doing well in the royal life, good for her!

  • rainwood1

The Queen looks cute as a button.  The Duchess looks fabulous too.  And they look like they’re having a good time which is always the best fashion accessory.

  • Lilithcat

Her Majesty has it all over the commoner.  Color over drab any day!

And may I just say here that I am more than twice the commoner’s age and have better legs.  So there.

  • guest2visits

That color teal and that dress/jacket combo is much too severe and aging for the young and beautiful duchess.
    Lovely smiles all around.

  • girliecue

Ooooh, I just want to scoop QEII up and put her in my pocket so I can look at her and squeal with delight whenever I want! She just keeps getting cuter and cuter!!

  • Love Cathy Cambridge!  She has amazing legs but I think she’d (and they’d) look better with about 10 lbs. on.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

These pictures are downright heartwarming. Nice to see smiles all ’round.

  • Pennymac

    LOVE. That is all.

  • “major stems”… lol, i love you guys!

  • quiltrx

BETTY FTW!!! Hat and coat are completely fabulous.  I think HBC must have rubbed off on her a little bit in their recent get-together!

  • formerlyAnon

I don’t know how that woman (the Duchess) always manages to look as if she’s sincerely enjoying her public appearances. Genius at her job.

At 86(? something like that) I tend to think the Queen may sometimes choose a sensible favorite shoe for stability. But perhaps I underestimate her powers.

    •  She still seems to be able to walk steadily, albeit slowly, without assistance. If she needs a frumpier sensible shoe to do it, I’m all for it. It’s nice to see she’s still quite mobile!

  • AuntieAnonny

Gurl’s been bodybuilding, look at those muscles.

  • ccm800

The Queen and her brights. Almost cartoonish –  love it.

  • another_laura

It’s a great scene, this Cathy and Betty duo, but I really do not like the Duchess’s outfit. It looks chipply made and that color is yuck.

Is it just that I’ve had a bad day? (smiley face)

  • Lattis

If I just saw a picture of the Queen’s hat sitting on a shelf, I’d say it came off the set of Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” – something the Mad Hatter wore. Which I love – I would gladly bow down before her just for the hat alone.

  • OneTwoThreeFashion

They both look LOVELY! Love the Queen’s outfit in fuchsia!

  • mjude

omg, betty!  its taken me a life time to like the old gal but now at her age how can i not.  the photo of the 2 of them…adorable!

  • Jecca2244

     I just love them. Adorable.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Stems. You guys crack me up.
She looks great, as usual. Love that jacket. LOVE. It’s great how she manages to look appropriate yet still young and modern.
Her Majesty looks simply adorable in that pink coat. That hat is wacky, but hell, she’s the queen and she’s like 300 years old. She can do whatever she damn well pleases.

    • meowing

Also love that the “damn well pleases” includes those beat-up, sensible shoes.  Let’s hear it for us old ladies of comfort!

  • nannypoo

Cathy is either the sweetest, friendliest person in the world or a great actress. She always seems genuinely happy to meet whoever she’s meeting. She’s adorable here with the queen, who is looking pretty adorable herself.

  • Judy_J

QEII seems to have settled into her golden years quite nicely.  She’s the queen and can wear whatever she bloody well pleases.  I love that fuschia pink coat, and the hat is beyond fabulous.  The Duchess looks lovely, as always.  You get the feeling that these two genuinely like each other, and that’s heartwarming to see.

  • Screw Cathy – I want Betty’s coat and hat! It’s disgustingly cute, and I am so pleased to see the QoE loosening up and having some fun with her fashion!

  • twocee

WANT Cathy’s wardrobe.  All of it.

Also, I love the look on the bishop’s face in the first picture.

  • Cathy S

Queen Betty is rocking that bright coat and hat. Maybe she can get Cathy C. to color it up a bit. Although I have to say she looks fabulous, but as you say, a bit bunched up in the top. Damn, her legs are amazing.

  • elfbrick

She looks like origami. I like.

  • I would KILL for her getaway sticks!!  Her gams, her pins, her stems-whatever you call them, I’ve dreamed of having legs like that since I was 10 yo!

  • moja31

i wish we lived in a world where having thighs as thin as your calves wasn’t considered enviable. aside from the shoulder area issues, i like this look.
