Cathy Cambridge in Emilio Pucci

Posted on March 16, 2012

T Lo Editorial Meeting:

Lo: Do you want to do another Cathy Cambridge post?

T: Oh God, I can’t look at another sweet dress in a demure color.

Lo: Take a look … at THIS. *dramatic laptop spin*

T: Gasp!

*T & Lo jump in the air and high-five in slow motion, like something out of a Mentos commercial*

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge meets the GB HockeyTeam at the Riverside Arena in the Olympic Park in London. Catherine wore an Emilio Pucci Pre-Spring 2012 blazer paired with J Brand jeans and L. K. Bennett shoes.

Emilio Pucci Punto Milano Blazer

Why, Mrs. Cathy! Don’t you look utterly adorable! What a snappy little jacket! What a kicky little scarf! What tight little pants!

Actually, we’re not entirely sold on that last item, Mrs. Cathy. Although we sympathize if you ran out of razors at the palace that morning and couldn’t get to a touchup on the legs. These things happen. But big ups to you, Duchess, for choosing such a chic little getup and still looking approachable. Save that demure pleated-skirt shit for when you’re working a double bill with Gramma Betty.

I think she’s always nearly perfect in her clothing choices, but those pants look too tight.

    • mountainFashionista

And flats would’ve been a much chicer footwear choice with Audrey-length pants (not to mention more appropriate for the venue…)

      • piecesofconfetti

Agree, flats would have looked much better!

        • Adriana_Paula

          Flats or cool boots…

        • Judih1

Yes flats is what this look needed.

      • She was basically doing a gym-to-photo-op look here, so at one point she was wearing cute flats with those pants, even if they did come in the form of trainers.

    • octopol

I agree that flats would have looked better, but I think her pants are tight because she is wearing colored jeggings – she knew that she was going to be running around playing hockey, so this way all she had to do was take off her jacket and change her shoes instead of wearing full-on hockey kit.  Trying to really run and play in regular fitted jeans is nigh impossible.

    • rketeckt

Yep…girl’s got a killer figure but they are just a scosh tight.  And as mountainFashionista mentioned, some flats (or a kitten heel) would seem more appropriate.  And as Danielle Shaw mentioned, is it about time for an eyeliner intervention?

    • racrobin

Yes,but that should squash any bump rumors for a while, hey?

      •  Well, at least we know she has thighs here, I was concerned she was too thin, but glad to see some meat on her legs.

  • Danielle Shaw

I thought this was such an odd outfit – the jacket, scarf, and pumps came off as very aging and “yacht club” and the cropped coral jeans read “tween who shops at Old Navy.”

    And SO. MUCH. MAKE-UP.

    • melizer

      Girl loves her eyeliner.

    • MissAnnieRN

The scarf is the official scarf of the 2012 British Olympic Team or some such nonsense.  I agree it comes off as Yacht-clubby, but I guess when you’re the Duchess of Cambridge you can pull that shit off at age 30.  The pink jeans have a very Breton Red feel to them in an updated and modern/youthful shape.  Agree with the rest of the world that the heels look dumb and flats are the choice for this look.

  • serenitynow02

Look, I love Cathy and I support any effort to move a little beyond the dictates of the royal uniform. But those are godawful ugly pants. And the length of the jacket is making her look weirdly elongated. But I do love the jacket and from the waist up, I give her an “A” for effort.

    • Sara__B

According to the UK Daily News, “The Kate effect strikes again: Sales of coral-coloured jeans soar after Duchess wore pair to play hockey”.  Sales increased 88% in a matter of hours, ugly or not.

      • serenitynow02

        Oh I believe it!

  • mommyca

oh come on! and you are not going to include the pictures when she changed to a sweatshirt and sneakers and was playing hockey with the Olympians?  She looked awesome!

    •  Exactly!  She wore that so she could play field hockey without the blazer and pumps.

  • Kate4queen

that looks like a London 2012 Olympics scarf or British team scarf, so she probably had to wear it. 🙂

  • headhunter2

Why is Tilden Swinton playing goalie for GB’s field hockey team? Is that research for a role?

    • girliecue

You would have to be Swinton to totally rock those knee pad boots!

  • I’d love this outfit if it weren’t for the scarf. Did you see the pictures were she changed her heels for trainers and her smart blazer for a hoodie? She’s just like us!! (nearly.)

    • melizer

      “ran out of razors” *pshaw*

    • Sarah Dickerson

Apparently the scarf is the official “supporters” scarf, so I doubt she had a choice.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

I can’t quite get over the feeling that the combination of scarf and blazer makes her look as though she’s BA Cabin Crew…  Other than that she can do no wrong in my book.

  • She is absolutely exquisite. I love everything she wears!

  • BarbaraNovak

The scarf is an official Olympics scarf, so it was probably close to mandatory for her.  There are some casual snaps of her playing field hockey, and the pants look great when she’s playing!

    • Sara__B

Apparently she’s a decent player, too!

      • SapphoPoet

I read somewhere (maybe here?) that she lead her women’s field hockey team in college.

  • L.

Love it except for the heels… silly looking with that outfit in that setting.

  • janetjb

I don’t like the combination of shoes and pants.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Hmm, I don’t know. I prefer the other lady’s shoes.

  • Amy Ellinger

pants are a skosh too tight, and I would have preferred flats & less eyeliner, but overall, adorbs!!

  • granddelusion

I know it’s the style, but those clothes just look too small. The pants are too tight, and everything else looks too small.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Oh My God Becky, I did not read the headline, and my first thought was, SWINTON pulled a WERQ, but I didn’t realize she was so short.

  • marilyn

She still looks great even though the pants are too tight.  She has a great shape, and let’s face it:  She is at  a hockey game.  I think the pants would be okay at a hockey game, and the rest is rather formal.  But, she is stuck with that.  No one is ever going to see her in flipflops, shorts and little top, even though she has the figure for it.

  • splix71

MJN Air hired a new steward! She and Arthur are going to rock GERTI.

No, she looks cute. Except for the shoes. Should be flats.

  • There are shots of her in this same ensemble actually playing hockey with the team.  She needed to be able to run around.  Looks happy as can be in those shots, too.

  • Leo Anthony

    …There is no such thing as a “Pre-Spring” collection… Resort/cruise or pre-fall?

  • And seriously, since she was posing against those eye-searing shin-guards, I like that she chose something that would pop against them, not look ridiculous, and underscore that she was meeting with athletes.  I just love her.

  • I don’t know that you guys could ever post too much Cathy Cambridge.

  • piecesofconfetti

Yikes, those pants are too tight. Knowing that she’s thin as a rail, they must be size 000.

  • PhillipWilde

FAB. U. LOUS.  And she’s not wearing a British designer. *gasp*

  • siriuslover

My first thought was flight attendant. But I still think it’s absolutely adorable in a chic, British way that only the Brits can truly pull off. Love her!

  • formerlyAnon

At least in that photo, those pants are not flattering. Fortunately, she doesn’t *need* flattering.

I like the cuteness of it all, but the pants are perhaps a bit too close to leggings & I’d like to see what it looked like with flats.

    But, cute. Definitely, definitely, cute.

  • GTrain

I think it’s a very cute outfit and she looks great in it.

  • Maybe she borrowed Pippa’s pants? She does look cute, though.

  • uprightcitizen

She always looks pretty, and she has apparently stolen Kate Jackson’s body from the mid-70’s … very thin with the super-long torso. But her head always looks WAY too big for the rest of her, and even moreso here. Seriously, if you look at that first photo, it looks like someone has cut out her head from another photo and pasted it onto this pic, without bothering to resize it to normal human proportions. She makes those Bratz dolls look anatomically correct.

  • nannypoo

She’s like Queen Betty for me – she can wear anything she wants and look adorable. She has singlehandedly brought the horrible British royalty into the 21st century and made them cool.

  • I love those pants. I’ve been trying to find an affordable pair of colored jeans for myself for a while now, but they’re so often that same cropped length, which (I think, anyway) just makes it look like I outgrew my pants. I also adore that jacket. Buttons!

  • alyce1213

Adorable, but the pants are too tight and too short.  I’m surprised “they” let her go out like that.

  • The whole getup seems one number too small. Plus, she goes to meet the GB Hockey Team wearing tight pants and a cropped jacket. We all know where the audience’s eyes will be stuck.

  • a_liking

I like it all except the shoes. I think they are what’s making the pants look weird. Different shoes and her proportions would look much better!

  • Anathema_Device

Agree with the other kittens that the pants could be a size larger and the shoes should be flats. Otherwise, I think this is a great casual look for her. Love the colored jeans. I searched for the news stories related to this event. She even looks fabulous when playing field hockey.

Her hair even knows how to pose!!! How is that humanly possible?

  • The whole getup seems one size too small. Plus, she goes to meet the GB Hockey Team wearing tight pants and a cropped jacket. We all know where the audience’s eyes will be stuck.

  • I never, ever like that length on pants, but she looks so good in the last picture that I’m willing to forgive the length.

  • She should have worn flats rather than those grandma heels.  Otherwise, well played.

  • I like it, even the pants, but that’s probably nostalgia on my part since I believe I owned a similar pair of brightly color capri jeans in 1986.

  • Love the pants! She can pull them off and they are awesome, picking up the red in the scarf. Agree flats would be better but with this outfit they probably would have read too laid back, her being who she is.

  • VermillionSky

meh.  Looks like she’s ready to host the shuffleboard tourney on deck 4.

  • elzatelzabelz

Those look exactly like the pair I have from Zara, so I’m just going to pretend they are. That way, I’ll have something Princess Cathy wore before it became “Big.”

  • MilaXX

She small enough to rock a skinny jean, I think this was a smart look since it still reads royal, but allowed her to interact with the game. Well played Cathy.

  • I am SO sold on those pants! She looks *amazing*.

  • Wendi126

I just love the phrase “snappy little jacket”.. Not sure why but it’s amusing me. Thanks guys. Love your posts. Only page I make sure I get to daily. Xx

  • PeaceBang

So cute up top. And with a few inches of breathing room in the pants, it would be a knock out.

  • NCDFan

I think the pants are stretchy. In the videos of her shooting field hockey she looks comfortable.

    • Caroline2

I’m not sure if those are skinny jeans or “jeggings” (abominable word), but I think she looks fab.  Definitely need to see the pics after she swaps the heels for trainers and the jacket for a GB Olympic hoodie and goes ahead and shoots an (unattended) goal.  Not to say she couldn’t have made it anyway, she apparently was captain of the HS hockey team.  And yeah, count me in on “no such thing as too much Kate”.  Kate, Shelley-O, I always want to see them.

  • I am so in love with her, it’s ridic.

  • quiltrx

Come on, guys…she PLAYED field hockey with these gals!  She wasn’t going to do that in a prissy little skirt.  The jeans are a little tight, but the look is otherwise pretty appropriate IMO.

  • Hetha Innis

She’s so freaking cute. I can’t even remember her real name and title anymore, it’s Cathy Cambridge for ever.

  • eight_of_nine

I like the pants, just because they’re unexpected.  We almost never see her in pants.

  • lifetime_student

Have you seen the pictures where she changed the jacket for a hoodie and the pumps for trainers and played a bit of field hockey with the team? Adorable!

  • Stubenville

How nice to see her dressing her age. I assume she can’t cut loose when granny is along with her.

  • SapphoPoet

Cute outfit, but the pants look too tight and I think flats would have been a better choice. Still–nice to see that she can look somewhat casual on occasion.

  • *T & Lo jump in the air and high-five in slow motion, like something out of a Mentos commercial*I am filing this image away for a rainy day, because it just made this one.

  • howdoilook

She ended up putting on trainers and taking some shots on goal, so I don’t really fault her for wearing the pants.

  • R. L.

She is awesome.  I just saw a gallery of her memorable outfits on another website.  I’d add this one to balance out all the lady-like dresses and coats.

  • Jacqueline Wessel

In additional pictures I saw in the Huffington Post the color of the pants coordinated nicely with the uniforms of the Olympic team she was visiting.

  • boweryboy

To be fair shortly after she took those photos she swapped out the blazer, scarf and pumps for a sweatshirt and a pair of trainers and then played hockey.

It becomes an outfit that’s more functional than fashionable if placed in context with the event and the fact she knew she was going to play hockey.

  • I’m playing catch up this week so might too late for this info but….part of the reason Cathy wore the jeans is because at the field, she changed into sneakers, tossed off her jacket and scarf and actually played field hockey with the team for a bit…or for photos…you decide. Anyway, the red jeans were part of an outfit she was trying to get double-duty from.

  • I thought it was hilarious (and practical) that she was wearing those pants with some trainers and a different top to play hockey then just swapped the top and trainers for heels and a blazer for the photo ops. Princesses: Just like us!

  • Lisa

  • OneTwoThreeFashion

    She’s great.

  • PrunellaV

Just one question: When is the Duchess of Cambridge doll coming out? And there’d better be a lot of outfits.

  • ErinSara5

Love the look, especially the jeans! I even like the heels. The angle is odd in the first pic, but in others, they looked really cute and streamlined the whole look.

    • SignLadyB

Yes, in the first pick she almost looks like she has saddle bags–impossible, of course. As always, I think she’s adollable. And, Nancylee61 see toriadoria’s comment–she’s super slim, she is not disappearing and she doesn’t need an intervention.

  • knitnorth

Yaaay! I love your Cathy posts. I agree with the minons who have suggested flats vs pumps – cute little ballet flats would have sold it

  • toriadoria

No. It makes her proportions look craaaaazy. She’s obviously a super-slim person, but her upper half looks HUGE tottering around on top of those legs. Could be fixed, maybe, with slightly looser pants. Or full-length pants. Or maybe just taking off that scarf?

  • As the flectcher whittles and makes straight his arrows, so the master directs his straying thoughts.

  • nancylee61

Pants – too tight. I love her, but she looks like she is disappearing. She needs an intervention. Now I will shut up.

  • Wish she would have worn softer eye makeup and tied her hair back, it would have been cute and appropriate for the setting.

I’ve been trying on some pants in that style and it’s almost impossible to find a pair that don’t either look too baggy or bunch up and cling.  Of course, that’s me trying on off-the-rack stuff, but I looked at her pants and thought, uh-huh…

  • afabulous50

I thought the goalie behind her was Tilda…
