Blake Lively on the Set of “Gossip Girl”

Posted on March 07, 2012

Question, since scarves seem to be the topic du jour around here…

Is this … over-scarfing?

Because we really love this look from tip to toe…

Jimmy Choo Lara Woven Shoulder Bag

Marc by Marc Jacobs Dreamy Logo Laptop Case

Repetto ZiZi Oxford Flat

… But we can’t help thinking she looks like she dashed off in a hurry and literally clotheslined herself, running off with someone’s damp blouse wrapped around her neck.

But we have to admit, the coat’s sharp and the rest of the accessories are divine. Love the bags and LOVE the Oxfords (even if they do call to mind nun shoes when worn with black tights).

How long is that thing?! She’s got it looped around twice, tied, and it’s still hanging down so long. I love the pattern but it does look a bit much.

    • JosephLamour

it looks like the flag of maryland. serena, why are you wearing the maryland flag?

  • Anathema_Device

Yay for oxfords and colorful scarves! (See my comment in the Heigl post today…)

She has kind of overscarfed, but I think with a few minor adjustments this would work. I love the graphic pattern and burst of color. I sometimes wear pretty big scarves. They double as shoulder wraps in a restaurant or movie theater should I be between needing my outerwear and going jacketless.

  • I like the scarf, but I suspect she handed it to her colourist and said “do this to my hair”.

    • amywinns

      I saw those similarities too!

    • Sunshine16

I was just mumbling about her cray-cray hair color, hysterical!

  • janetjb

    That’s a lot of scarf!

I really like the whole look.
    (Her hair doesn’t count here)

  • cam_lo

i dislike blake a lot but when i saw this photo i had to admit i loved the scarf. i love big scarfs in general and i feel like the fact that all of her garments are in a neutral make it okay to wear a big, colorful one.

i do not, however, forgive her for murdering that bag by stuffing her laptop/laptop case in it.

  • Sarah A. Maguire

It looks like the Maryland flag.

    • That’s what I thought!  But I’m a proud Marylander, so I think it’s great (people from other states tell me it hurts their eyes).

  • Maybe, but the effect is so awesome that I don’t care. And she’s tall enough – and the background outfit plain enough – that she’s carrying it off.

    • Beardslee

I agree, she can get away with it because she is tall enough.  It doesn’t look like it’s choking her or wearing her.

  • Kate4queen

    ‘clotheslined herself’-LOL!! Love it.

  • DeborahLipp

I really love mega-scarfing and I think she’s doing it in a chic way. I don’t understand why you have a shoulder bag that size and still need a separate laptop bag.

  • I am on board with this look.  The fact that the rest of her outfit is black, and quietly tailored, makes the abundance of the scarf look great. Add in another color, or a pattern, besides her bag and, well, not so much.

  • Laurie Bergman

Wow….at first glance I thought that was a woven bag with a blue Dreamy Logo flap.  And I sorta liked it that way.
Re the scarf….while I love scarves, this one just makes her neck look like it’s on fire.  “Overscarfed” is a great way to put it.

  • Maybe she wants to be the next Doctor Who…

All kidding aside I like the outfit and hooray for comfy walking shoes.

  • Ben

Putting the Marc in the Jimmy Choo really makes one fucking killer bag.

    • BrooklynBomber

Funny – at first I didn’t get it. I thought, I really like the red bag with the blue flap, and figured the editorial picture below was just a different style in the same line. Totally agree with you: that’s the bag I like — the one that doesn’t actually exist!

  • Judy_J

The dark roots in her hair accessorize perfectly with the pattern of the scarf.

  • twocee

I really dislike scarves as an indoor accessory.  This is fine as she’s wearing it outside with a coat, but if she keeps in on indoors as an accessory, it’s an immediate Out for me.

  • NatalieD28

I haven’t gotten past how those leggings/tights turn her ankles to cankles…

    • tabatha rose

She’s wearing longjohns underneath. You can see the cuffs in some pics. She’s done it before, but they were more noticeable because she was in heels.

    • ballerinawithagun

Yes, I was delighted to see that flaw!

  • Wouldn’t change a thing. I think she gets away with the big scarf because the coat, tights, and shoes are all black and relatively simple.

  • I don’t like the shoes. They’re too flat, and do in fact make me think of nuns, which is not something I need to be reminded of. I really love the scarf, though, and everything else. It all works together in a great way.

Girl needs to get her hair done.

    • mountainFashionista

Remember in 1983 (or so) when Footloose came out and everyone called these “jazz shoes”?  I HAD to get a pair.  But they are not cute, and never really were… except on Kevin Bacon…

  • serenitynow02

The bag is the too-much part for me. I love the shoes, but they are doing her legs no favor. Still, it’s such a relief to see her look relatively classy, I’m giving it all a thumbs up.

  • CQAussie

I hate the shoes.  I LOVE the bags, both of them.  I love the scarf, I think it works.  But I have a thing for big flow-y scarves =D

  • Love!!  I wish those shoes weren’t almost $300 when you could get an identical pair at payless for $14.

    • Or your local dance supply store.  Those remind me of the shoes we used to wear in jazz dance class!

  • I love me a good pair of classic Oxfords.  The scarf looks good to me, and I like the way it picks up a couple of colors in the bag.

  • Jennifer Coleman

Bad move on the Repettos. Blake Lively has cankles and those shoes prove it. Best to keep her in a heel.
I don’t mind the big-assed scarf (how long is that badboy anyway?) as it pairs with the coat nicely and even all the hair doesn’t offend (maybe it’s the coordinating colors that work). Anyway, I wish I could learn to do such a complicated scarf arrangement.

    • Anathema_Device

Google “how to tie a scarf.” You’ll get loads of results: pictures, youtube videos, etc. Some are dorky, some are cool.

    • tabatha rose

She doesn’t have “cankles.” She’s wearing long underwear under her tights.

      • Jennifer Coleman

Nope. She has cankles. Seen ’em in other pictures. Harder to spot because she’s slender and mostly wears heels.

  • Love the whole thing.

  • Pants_are_a_must

I love oxfords, but these ones make her look oddly stumpy.

  • Qitkat

I think she must have a long neck, because if I wore that thing, it would be close to a burka.

    • random_poster

      Yes!! LOL!!!

  • I firmly believe there is no such thing as over-scarfing.  I like the oxfords, but with the black tights it looks like she has cankles, which I’m sure she doesn’t.

  • One scarf is fine, but it looks like she has 3 or four wrapped around there.
It looks ridiculous.Love the shoes. Happy to see more and more flats showing up.

  • Michelle Y

dashed off in a hurry and literally clotheslined herself” Agree! And, I must take a moment to gush about my fabulously gay imaginary uncles.  I ADORE you both.  Discovered you about two months ago and am completely addicted. Your parlance has even seeped into my inner dialogue..i.e., getting dressed for a dinner out last weekend in a dress that wasn’t the proper length “Girl, that’s not your dress…” or in response to friend doing her daily crazy “What the shit is wrong with her today?” SO THANK YOU… You keep this moderately (and hopefully, appropriately) fashionable working mother of 3 riveted, educated, entertained and oftentimes too distracted from her task at hand.  LOVE.

  • I ADORE this scarf. I always think my scarves are far too short, maybe I should find and invest in this one!

  • Eclectic Mayhem

I kinda like the Charlie Brown tribute scarf, Ms Lively appears to be carrying it off.

  • Cheri Lee

MY only critic is the shoes with tights otherwise I covet this look.

  • I like the scarf. My problem with it is that it clashes horribly with that lovely bag that she’s sporting. That is not a complimentary pairing in the least. Yikes.

  • She looks great. Yes, I just said that about Blake Lively. Obviously someone else dressed her.

  • NCDFan

Love! And I don’t think it’s too long. On the other hand I had a 12 foot Dr. Who scarf I knitted in the 80s.

  • hate the bag, love the scarf.

  • hate the bag, love the scarf.

  • GenXcellent

The Oxfords are giving me flashbacks.

  • altalinda

Not overscarfing, but overbagging.  That Jimmy Choo is the size of luggage.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

I think you can do this much scarf because it’s light-weight and worn with a wool coat. However, the overall look would be much better balanced with booties instead of flats.

  • RWtD

I don’t think it’s over-scarfing. I love this look. Except her shitty hair.

  • dress_up_doll

This is a very different look for Ms. Lively. Me likes! Love the scarf, coat and black tights. A bit boho with a little classic tailoring.

  • jw_ny

Nope…that scarf looks great.  I think it works because the rest of the look is so blank, aside from the bag.  I’m sort of not digging the shoes, but I realize the practicality of them when dashing about town.  Girl has some kankles too…;)

  • tabatha rose

There’s a million pics of Blake Lively in flats and she doesn’t have “cankles.” She’s wearing long underwear underneath her tights. It’s freezing cold in NY right now.

  • IAmJ

The scarf is the only thing I like about this look. The tight/shoe combo is killing me.

  • butterflysunita

    I love that coat.

  • R. L.

Wow, her hair is TERRIBLE.  Black and orange Halloween hair.  I don’t love the oxfords or the big scarf but overall it is an okay look.

I live in a cold place and I give her kudos for not wearing pants everywhere in the cold.  Even with 3 layers of tights I wouldn’t go out in a skirt.

    • sleah_in_norcal

seriously, could her roots look any worse?  it’s time for that fad to be over!  love the tote.

      • I think that the fad must end too. And then I look at my roots and I’m all “thank god it’s still a fad, I can wait a bit longer”….

      • I sported the bleached hair with roots look in the 80s, but man, they never looked that bad. Her hair’s about 3 different shades of blonde, all of them brassy.

  • kimmeister

Scarf is fine.  I like oxfords, just not those particular ones (too flat and boring).

  • Diane_Chambers

I think it’s fantastic!  The fashion on this show is so great, and they managed to maintain it even after Eric Daman left.

  • Emily Scott

It would take a lot for me to consider something as over-scarfed, and I think she is well within the limits here. She hasn’t reached Doctor Who levels yet. I think this look is amazing.

I am lusting after the shoes.

  • KaileeM

Maybe…but I like it! She’s totally pulling it off, and I sort of like a voluminous scarf myself. I’d love to know who makes it, but then I would be sad because I probably couldn’t afford it.

  • MilaXX

I don’t mind the scarf, but I wish the bag and scarf had more complimentary colors. To my eye they clash a bit. I do like that the look has a very real, city girl feel to it.

  • It’s a very Serena look. She and her co-star actually look so good in the show that anything they try to do in real life pale by comparison. No mortal can dress like Serena and Blair.

  • JMB_edits

Overscarfing?  I thought that meant too many trips to the buffet line!  Hee-hee! 😉

  • Vickiefantastico

Someone please explain something to me. Normally, fashion fads go away after a certain amount of time (for example, uggs, thank goodness), but the whole long-scarf-wrapped-around-the-neck-uber-dramatically-thing has not (and during all seasons and temperatures as well). It’s been around for at least seven or eight years. Why is that? Why has this phenomenon defied fashion evolution? I’m not saying I hate it, I’m just bored, and I simply don’t get it.

    • I think it’s because it’s an easy and relatively inexpensive way to add interest and drama to a look. For someone like me, who gets cold even in NC winters, it’s also a practical way to keep warm when it’s chilly, but not so dead-ass freezing that I need a heavy coat. I can wear a scarf wear a jacket, under which I’m wearing a sweater and a tank top or t-shirt, and I’m fine. That’s really common down here.

      That’s all I got. 🙂

      • Vickiefantastico

Thanks! It really has been driving me crazy! But can you explain the scarf in the dead of summer thing? 😉

        • No. No I cannot. 😉

          • Snailstsichr

I do it to cope with the extreme air conditioning at work.

  • formerlyAnon

I don’t think it’s over-scarfing. I love the look, except for the Jimmy Choo bag which I think is hideous.

But it only works because the rest of her is so sleek. Were she running late for work looking all harried clutching several more random items, wearing her tennis shoes and any-color-but-black gloves, it would be way, way too much.

  • Cathy S

She really looks fabulous, but yeah, that scarf could use some pruning before it takes over her entire body.

  • No, I LOVE the scarf here

  • i enjoy this quite thoroughly! the scarves work paired with the sleekness of that coat and leggings/tights and shoes.

  • I love the coat. I’ll stop there.

  • TheOtherChristina

The scarf is amazing. Are you sure that’s a laptop case inside her handbag, though? Who puts a laptop into a bag and then puts that bag into another bag?

I’m thinking it might be an iPad case, since I have that selfsame case for my iPad.

  • sid123

    head to toe…including the roots?

  • meowing

I’m in the market for nun shoes ’cause of the follies of my youth:  rad looking shoes, but poor construction, poor materials, and poor fit.  But, dang, they looked good.  Now:  comfort reigns.  Doubt, tho’, that I could ever afford these.

    • Lisa

Oh, honey, me too!  My dogs are killing me from the good old days.  I’m always on the hunt for low-heeled yet hopefully pretty shoes.

  • prettybigkitty

The nun shoes give her cankles.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

not at all [for the overscarfing]. then again, it’s me answering.
i think it’s the best she ever looked, other than the nun shoes. in fact, the nun shoes are scary cos this woman is maybe six feet tall & they make her look like she has the stumpy version of what was once called piano legs. i think. even still, she has finally stopped looking stupid & desperate, apologies, which were her constant companions. probably will be again in the future, sadly. it’s what the world seems to want.

    • I still call them piano legs, and yes, the shoes, and the apparent long johns under her tights, have given her a case of said piano legs.

This is a great change for her. “Stupid and desperate” is on the money re: how she’s looked in the past. I hope this new look is a permanent change for the better.

  • marywv

HATE the soft-soled dance shoes. Ick.

  • margaret meyers

Touch up those roots.  What is hair and makeup for?

  • I love scarves in general and I want that one. Stat.

  • Lisa

LOVE the whole comfortable yet stylish casual look.  Yes, it’s a whole lotta scarf, but somehow it works.

  • Lilak

Hair and scarf sure are variations on a theme, way too much going on in each, and way too much of a unit.  Just a big ol’ mess that no amount of height can help.

And where did her ankles go?  (Ah, the perils of dark tights and flat lace-ups!)

  • kat89

The shoes look like jazz dancing shoes.

  • SapphoPoet

You can never have enough scarf!

  • mozzer0906

I love it, but then again I’m from Maryland and so I’m biased against some chic NY lady wearing our flag around her neck.

  • MissAnnieRN

I love scarves.  I have an addiction with them.  That being said, this is over scarfing.  The Jimmy Choo bag is TO DIE FOR.  The oxfords remind me of my jazz shoes from 1985 before capezio et al started making split soled jazz shoes.

  • miwome

I don’t think she has, but I’m biased. I live in Cairo, so all the women are half-covered in giant, colorful scarves. This looks totally normal to me. (I wear mine almost exactly like this, in fact, the better to obscure my figure.)

Were I wearing a full-length coat, though, I would wear it inside the coat, so you’d probably see about half as much scarf? It’s not cold enough for that here, but when I was back in Boston that was the uniform.

  • I love this WHOLE look. My kinda style.

  • Larkin21

Love it all! Except maybe the black tights. But the scarf looks great and I want that shoulder bag.

  • I love a big bright scarf on a tall woman wearing all black (or another neutral), but I don’t like the color scheme of her scarf. I also don’t like the extremely messy knotting of the scarf. It billows too much. A little less would be better. And the shoes would work with a skinny pant or trousers, but not with tights.

  • Louise Bryan

I really like the scarf, the color, and fullness.  No complaints here.  I’m not sure where to find a 60″ square scarf, but I do think it’s fabulous.

  • Allison Woods

I hate the bag, despise the laptop case, and CANNOT ABIdE by the shoes, not even a little bit.

I do, however, quite like the scarf. I also happen to be of the stature that can pull such things off.

  • SHE’S GOT A LAPTOP BAG! That means she must have taken Georgina’s package seriously. But she’s carrying it in public? Hmmm, to the Spectator offices?  To show someone what’s on it? OMG, OMG, OMG.

  • How to do flats and stay chic. Comfort AND style?! *head spins like Linda Blair*

  • frankystein123

I love the outfit… except for the scarf AND the shoes.

  • Coralie Legister

Why’s she always pulling that confused-and-slack-jawed face?
