Writers Guild Awards Red Carpet

Posted on February 21, 2012

Darlings, it was the Writers Guild of America West Coast Awards! Because the East Coast was starting to get a little snotty about it!

Ahna O’Reilly

Really cute dress, but the height of the hem makes her look a little cocktail waitress-y.

Amanda Peet

Oh sweetie. Live a little. It’s 2012. Flash a little shoulder or ankle or something.

Amy Poehler in David Meister

She always makes terrible red carpet choices and while the color here is awful and looks like her skin is hanging off in sheets, this dress otherwise suits and flatters her, which is a step in the right direction.

Kiernan Shipka

Because her performance was so good on Mad Men, her part  was never re-cast (like many child parts in serial drama would be), so it’s ironic that she’s playing a character at least a couple years older than her (last time we checked in) but she’s one of those young ladies who’s taking her time to mature. Sally Draper keeps getting older and little Kiernan looks largely the same. We’re dying to find out what year the new season takes place in and whether we’re supposed to buy her as a teenager.

Still, she looks adorable here.

Lisa Kudrow

Oh, honey. When your red carpet outfit is completely indistinguishable from what you’d wear to a funeral of a person you hardly knew, it’s time to turn around and go home.

Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji

We sound like a broken record, but the shape is fantastic. Tadashi worked that shit out.

Zooey Deschanel in vintage Shareen

It’s pretty and it suits her, even if it is a little “1975 JC Penneys catalogue.” The criss-crossing sashes are a bit much.

  • Is it bad that I want Kiernan’s dress. Adorable. There rest are pretty underwhelming.

    • Diane_G

Kiernan’s dress is adorable and I’d love it for my 3 year old niece, but everything else on here is about the same color of my dirty washcloths.

    • IAmJ

Is it bad that I’m 29 and I wore a very similar dress to a wedding last year?

      • mountainFashionista

It depends: How did you accessorize it?  And more importantly, how did you stand when you were wearing it?  🙂

        • Obviously the only way to stand is any pose from Lea Michelle on the red carpet.  No confusing me for a tween!  =P

    • Kiernan is the best dressed of this red carpet, hands down!

  • cmb92191

Kiernan Shipka looks so cute and age appropriate.  She was born in November 1999-  so she is in her 13th year but not 13 yet.   I don’t think Sally Draper was 13 during season 5.   I think Sally was 11-12- but I don’t think her age was glaringly stated.   She can look older, but I don’t think Sally Draper will 16!

    •  I agree, from references in the show, Sally Draper was born in 1954 or 1955.  Season 4 spans November 1964 to October 1965, so she is supposed to be around 10.  It was filmed in 2010, when Kiernan was also 10.  And when season 5 airs, if the timeline is 1966 or earlier, Kiernan will still be older than the character she plays.  We’re just not used to a character who’s 12 being played by a girl who’s actually 12.

  • Tadashi seems to be the go to for fatties.

    I’m jus’ sayin’.

    • Sobaika Mirza

    • j_anson

      Yeah, nice one.

    • FashionShowAtLunch

      You’re a douche.

      I’m jus’ sayin.’

    • Catiline

      You’re so edgy.

    • amywinns

Really? Who’s the go-to for douches? Tell us who you wear. I’m jus’ askin’.

      • Well at the moment some hipster shit, coz i’m edgy.

Anywhoo, alls i’m sayin’ is tadashi must make a killin’ on the hamburger lovin’ set. which is like totally awesome for the economy. ‘n stuff.

    • Diane_G

There are about a thousand and five better ways to say something like this. Obviously you say it in the trashiest way possible and to get the arm hairs rising on readers. Congratulations, you’re coming off as incredibly rude and tasteless! Yay!
I wish you an abundance of stores that never carry your size, boutiques that only cater towards every silhouette except yours, jeans that give you permanent wedgies and hems that stop at THE most unflattering parts of your body. Maybe then you’ll be in their shoes and give you a better understanding of why certain women flock to a certain designer.

  • NC_Meg

I just love Amy Poehler but can someone help her out? Tina Fey, maybe? They’re BFFs anyway. She struggled a lot with the RC but now she usually looks pretty good.

I don’t watch Mad Men so I don’t really know who Kiernan is but she looks adorable.

Octavia looks fab but I can’t with Zooey. I can’t.

    • Oh, but you must watch MAD MEN! You still have time to catch up before S5 starts. And make sure you read the recaps here after every episode; it REALLY enhances the experience!

    • MilaXX

Doesn’t Zooey just make u=you want to smack her. It’s the head tilt that really pushes it over the edge.

      • Yes. I frequently find myself screaming at her pictures, “Quit being so damned precious!”

      • NC_Meg

It’s the head tilt plus the position of her hands.  You are 32. Stop it.

  • Diane_G

After seeing the beautiful colors of dresses from the NAACP post, this is one yawntastic group of ladies.

  • Sam Corbett

I’m 100% in the Amy Poehler camp, but that dress “suits and flatters her”? Her mid-section and I beg to disagree. The hemline does look great on her, though.

And Kiernan Shipka looks amazing. I know she’s younger, but I fully expect her to start grabbing for Chloe Moretz’s parts any day now.

    • twocee

Thank you!  I thought I was the only one who thought that dress did nothing for Amy P.

  • Sobaika Mirza

    Jewel tones, Poehler, jewel tones!!

  • nannypoo

Kiernan Shipka is a very young-looking 12 year old, isn’t she? Good for her. I always think it’s sad when these little girls show up on the red carpet looking like they’re probably carrying a fake ID so they can be served at the after-party when they aren’t even old enough to see the show they are performing in.

  • Lochery

Why is Zooey posing like that?

    • FashionShowAtLunch

Because she is so very twee and precious.

      • twee as fuck, right? 😉

      • twocee

I couldn’t help but say your comment in my head with my best Gollum voice.

        • FashionShowAtLunch

           HA! Awesome.

    • amywinns

Because it makes her look even more like a doll-child, which is what everyone loves about her, right??

    • Diane_G

She has a very..specific..box that she has to fit into. It’s a box that smells of your mom’s old dusty 1970’s couch cover, includes My Little Pony accessories and kitty cat toys, and has aprons from the 1940’s in every vintagey pattern on the planet.

      • colleenjanel

Diane, after reading your reply to the now deservedly deleted post, I want to kiss you. 😉

And thank you TLo (I assume it was them) for removing the comment!

        • Diane_G

T’aww, thanks doll. Lord knows we’ve all been there. For me, it’s the length..always the length. Sigh. Shirt sleeves will never be long enough and pants will never be quite reaching my ankles unless they have an $80 price tag stapled to it. 😛

      • Lori

I hope for her sake she’s investing wisely, because she does have a very specific box and it doesn’t age well. “Twee as fuck” is barely tolerable at her current age, so I would love to know what she thinks she’s going to be doing 10 years from now. Someone needs to point at Meg Ryan’s career and say, “Let it be a lesson to you”.

        • Reportedly she has a tidy sum in the bank and lives well below her means so I think she will be OK.

        • amywinns

New York mag did a whole issue on the celebrity economy, and one of the features was a breakdown of Zooey’s spending, revealed via her recent divorce papers (awkward… but informative!). She does live well below her means. So maybe she’s already taken that lesson.
          If you’re curious, checkit: http://nymag.com/arts/all/celebrity-economy/zooey-deschanel-2012-2/?imw=Y

    • colleenjanel

Because we’re doomed to being beat over the head with how “quirky” she is.

    • “Must… look… twee-er… than… adorable… child… actress…”

    • luciaphile

Because that is her schtick. Manic Pixie Dream Girl

      • MilaXX

She was kinda of a jerk on Jimmy Fallon last week.

    • Yeah, the curious-but-dumb cocker spaniel look is so very annoying.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Next time I hit a RC event I could care less about, I too will grab my mom’s oldest apron and try to give it shape by tying ribbons from pointe shoes around my ribcage and call it a dress.

  • Stubenville

Zooey Deschanel – perfect dress for shoplifting.

  • sagecreek

Can’t believe you guys didn’t blast Zooey’s dress. If you want to call that a dress.

  • BrooklynBomber

I’m betting the the crisscross sash was just added to ZD’s vintage dress.

  • janetjb

Ahna’s dress would be more flattering if it were a few inches longer.
Wrong color Amy, otherwise well done.
Kiernan looks very springy for February, cute.
Lisa’s basic black dress needs better accessories.

    • Lori

I agree that Lisa Kudrow needed better accessories. She looks like she’s attending the funeral of someone she didn’t know all that well.

  • SewingSiren

I love Zooey’s dress , to me it has a strong Claire McCardell vibe and it suits  Zooey and her image very well.
I also like Octavia Spencer. I think she needs to play in a film with Sarah Hyland  of Modern Family. Can anybody else see how much their faces (eyes especially) resemble one another?
I kinda also love the Amanda Peet.  It’s a Florence Welch type dress and it looks good on her. I find it refreshing to see less skin on these starlets.
Ahna O’Reilly’s Looks like a cut of Christmas dress from the 1980’s ,  I’m all for up-cycling and re-cycling but at least use a sharp pair of scissors.

    • janetjb

Ha! Now that you’ve said it I see the same thing in Ahna’s dress.

      • mountainFashionista

Yeah, the big puffy shoulders, the shape of the skirt, the hemline, the fabric… blech.

I didn’t like most ’80s fashions when I was wearing them — in the ’80s — and am dismayed that they’re trying to make a comeback now (but heartened to see clearance racks full of them.  Maybe designers/buyers will take note.)

  • colleenjanel

OCTAVIA SPENCER IS SMILING!!!!!!! She was smiling on the Image Awards RC!

Okay, it’s kind of a half smile, but she doesn’t look miserable! C’mon Octavia … a smile is the most beautiful accessory!

  • JDreesen

i didn’t realize Amanda Peet was on Sister Wives.  interesting career move.

  • Beth G

I think Zooey is wearing Ellen’s Prom Dress.

  • … a little “1975 JC Penneys catalogue” Bwahahaha! Twee as fuck shit.

  • Ceur –

I don’t watch Mad Men, but after a decade or two of 30 year old actors creepingly playing 16 year old characters in all the popular teen series, I don’t mind a slight deviation towards the opposite. She definitely looks adorable!

    • Diane_G

Your comment is a huge reason why I hated Grease. I know it’s a movie, but still.

  • PeggyOC

I know Zooey is working the “cute and twee” thing in all her looks, but she’s got to stop cocking her head to the side in every picture.  She looks like one of my dogs hearing the can opener.

  • TheOtherChristina

Octavia Spencer is KILLING IT. I was lamenting some of the poorly chosen Tadashi dresses on recent red carpets, but this one is great.

I think Zooey Deschanel’s dress is amazing but her hair has taken a dramatic turn for the worse. (I know T & Lo dislike her usual hair but I’m smitten with it.)

  • understateddiva

Lisa Kudrow is wearing exactly what I would wear to a dressy event – which is odd since she’s a star, but it feels comforting, somehow.

    • judybrowni

She couldn’t thrown on a piece of jewelry?

      Especially since it’s free?

      • amywinns

Maybe she’s not on the schwag wagon on the time and she actually owns what she wears, especially for a lower-profile event like this?
That being said, a piece of costume jewelry or artisan accessories wouldn’t kill her.

        • NC_Meg

It’s Lisa Kudrow. I don’t know that she’s getting swag thrown at her. (But still, she has to own some jewelry of her own.)

  •  Kiernan looks great and Octavia Spencer looks fabulous. And like she knows it!

  • Paigealicious

    Ugh, Zooey…go away.

  • serenitynow02

    I made Zoey’s dress in home-ec class in 1975.

Kiernan looks adorable and just what a young lady her age should look like. I love Octavia’s dress and it looks great on her, but her gorgeous skin deserves a more interesting color dress set against it.

  • kingderella

its the perfect gown for deschanel!

  • Zippypie

God, I can’t stand Zoey’s precious deer-in-headlights bs any longer!  Be gone, wench!

Kiernan is adorable and Octavia is rocking it.

Just chucking a congrats out there to Vince Gilligan and George Mastras for winning for “Breaking Bad”.  Sorry all – BB is heads above Mad Men.

    • judybrowni

      You speak blaspheme.

  • schadenfreudelicious

apparently Amanda has made her escape from the compound for a night out on the town….

    • sagecreek

No kidding! I remember when I used to be envious of her…This one photo  put that to rest, and right smartly.

    • sagecreek

No kidding! I remember when I used to be envious of her…This one photo  put that to rest, and right smartly.

  • Again–Octavia FTW!  She looks gorgeous!

    • judybrowni

      And she’s almost smiling!

  • Again–Octavia FTW!  She looks gorgeous!

  • Vickiefantastico

Oh, I want that dress on Octavia Spencer! I want! I want! (Although perhaps in a color like lavender…)

  • Kiernan Shipka is 12 and looks 12, which is so refreshing. I don’t think she could play much older than 13, so I hope they don’t try. She looks really cute here. Can’t wait for Mad Men.

  • PrunellaV

I wonder what Zooey looks like when she squints. We’ll probably never find out.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Re: Zooey Deschanel – I can put up with the dress (barely), hair and makeup are fine, but that slight cock of the head just drives me crazy, like she’s some little girl still.  Jeez, grow up!  You’re a beautiful woman, not a girl any longer.  Learn how to stand and pose on the red carpet, fer cryin out loud!

  • Amy Ellinger

huh…I would swear I saw Ms. Deschanel’s dress in the clearance bedding section at Bed, Bath and Beyond…..

  • kimberlini

If I was a photographer, I’d use this event as an excuse to take the night off.  Everyone looks “sad” as Nina would say.

  • Monabel

Not getting the love for Octavia’s dress, the folds/gathers across the chest and shoulders look wonky.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

just a note about “vintage shareen.”

i think it’s actually shareen vintage & ZD, above, must personally know old shareen, there, cos elsewise there would be just no reason to purchase, um, that. i cant tell from looking at either ZD or at the shareen vintage website whether the dress actually is from penneys circa 1975 but it might be. seems most of what shareen does in the present [if not in the past, she’s probably not old enough] is, how you say, upcycle old dresses w/ things like the abovenoted crisscross sashes. those are leather, btw, & seem to be full of about as much thought as shareen puts into her work. what else the dress is full of, beyond ZD, i’m too full of, say, propriety myself to mention.

checked it out cos i had never heard of shareen. turns out that yes, this was correct & neither had most people. nor will they, i dont think.

although if you go to her website & try to find something out about her brand you might instead & by accident be treated to all manner of stuff you dont want to know, stuff you never wanted to know, about shareen’s impending divorce.

    tired, here.

  • janetjb

I think Zooey is “acting” all of the time.  The way she annoys so many here makes me laugh.

  • vmcdanie

Amanda Peet. Sigh. I really respect her for being a vocal opponent of that anti-vax business. This dress though looks like a sister wife’s first night off the compound.

I don’t know if I really care for Zooey’s dress but I love Zooey. We both play the ukulele and that’s pretty much all it takes.

I don’t know Kiernan Shipka but she’s more than a little reminiscent of Chloe Moretz.

  • MilaXX

Amanda Peet looks like a sister wife and all Zoey is missing is a garland of daisies in her hair.

  • granddelusion

Who cares about actors at a show honoring writers? I see them EVERYwhere. Show me some writers! And children don’t belong on any red carpet.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

dont mind kids on the red carpet. kids working are kids working. if they do a good job they should be honored too.
otoh, i also would much much much much much rather see some writers. book more than film but i’ll takes what i can gets.

  • BrightsideSusan

    Are the 1970″s vintage now?

Is Tadashi making plus size clothes available for all of us?

    • holdmewhileimnaked

oh heavens, the 1990s are vintage.
the 1970s, break my heart, are somewhere between thirty three & forty two years ago. cos antique has been somewhat bizarrely redefined as fifty years ago, you know, the 1970s & most of us here are nearly that–not just vintage.

      • formerlyAnon

Yes, this moving target of ‘antique’ & ‘vintage’ is something I muse upon too often, primarily at yard sales but also, sometimes, in front of the mirror.

  • Lisa

    Dear Zooey –

Laurie Partridge called.  She wants her prom gown back.

  • Zooey is wearing a belted picnic rug.

  • H & J Barnes & de Grasse

Mostly meh, but Amanda’s dress is a little not enough Downton Abbey, more than enough sister-wifey.  Is she usually this conservative?

  • quiltrx

Zooey looks so cute!  A really different choice in a red carpet world of old-bra colors.

  • Where are the writers????

  • Kiernan looks wonderful. Zooey needs to grow up. And stop cocking her head to the side.

  • bluefish

Kiernan FTW.  Best dressed by an avalanche!

  • formerlyAnon

Spencer & Shipka FTW. Close runners-up in Deschanel and, yes, Kudrow. Boring is better than unflattering or awkward for me. (Reason #1,347 why I am neither a fashionista nor a noted fashion blogger.)

  • Seriously, Amanda Peet is forever dressing like an effing Puritan.  What is up with that?  I am so confused…….

  • hate zoeys picnic dress, but I LOVE Kierna Shipka’s outfit!! sooo appropriate, chloe whats her face shoudl take some pointers
