WERQ: Diane Kruger in Giambattista Valli

Posted on February 10, 2012

Darlings, we don’t know about y’all, but we’re being fueled entirely by coffee and fabulosity at this point – and we’ve still got 5 full days of Fashion Week ahead of us. The important thing is that we go through it feeling pretty and we assure you, that won’t be a problem, but energy is getting harder and harder to come by.

You know what’ll pick us right up? A fabulous bitch in a fabulous gown, looking fabulous.

Diane Kruger attends the premiere of “Farewell, My Queen” in Berlin in a Giambattista Valli couture gown.

Ahh. That’ll do nicely.

We just had a discussion yesterday where we agreed that we never really felt like true fashion bloggers until we could spell Giambattista Valli’s name without looking it up and we never felt like true celebrity bloggers until we could do the same with Scarlett Johansson. Those double-consonant names are tricky bitches.

Anyway.

We’re always whining about dresses that look too complicated, but we’re always impressed by a designer who can put together a lot of elements on one garment and still make it feel sleek, without any of the elements fighting each other. There’s a whole hell of a lot going on here, but for some reason, it just all comes together without looking overdone. It helps to have a world class dress-wearer serving it up for you too. Diane, we don’t love the pinhead, but you are serving up Teutonic Dietrich realness and WERQing the shit out of it. Stand and snap, girl. Stand and snap.

That dress is KILLAH but the hair is ruining it for me. :(

      • Anonymous

        Agreed.. hate the hair!

      • Anonymous

My first thought also! It needed some oomph to balance the dress. Her head looks tiny.

        • Anonymous

          My sentiments exactly

I dunno. Usually hate the top knot, but anything more complicated would be too much and this dress demands to be on full view.

        • http://twitter.com/TheRedZavodnik Ginger

I agree that the dress practically requires sleek hair, but that top knot is not the hairstyle in my personal opinion.  A low bun or ponytail would’ve worked MUCH better.

And this is how its done!

    • Sioux Fuego

I wish her stylist(s) had bothered to spray her neck poof.  It would have really brought the drama.

I am not feeling that belt.  It looks like bottlecaps from far away.

At first, I thought that was Evan Rachel Wood (just looking at the photo).  She and Diane are both stunners who can wear outrageous stuff and have that certain something to pull it off flawlessly.

      • Anonymous

I just found out on this post -she doesn’t have a stylist!
The belt was better on the runway -I’m assuming it is the red carpet lighting.

I assumed she wore the bow “limp” in order to show off the face. On the model, it’s all about the dress (who cares who that girl is?), but on a movie star, face can’t just take a backseat to the gown.

    • http://magnetgirl.tumblr.com Anika

That second picture of Diane, she KNOWS she’s the queen.

    • http://twitter.com/arodenha Alli

She is fabulous – I love how she always takes risks with her red carpet style but still never looks like she’s wearing a costume. I read somewhere that she doesn’t use a stylist, which is mind-boggling to me.

      • Anonymous

        Really? No stylist? Dang!

        • http://twitter.com/arodenha Alli

          Looks like it! http://www.vogue.co.uk/news/2011/02/16/diane-kruger-on-having-no-stylist-and-her-first-fashion
I mean, she did start off as a muse to Karl, so she’s obviously got the hook-up in the fashion world….

          • Anonymous

She obviously has the “touch” -I always love seeing what she comes out with -even when she misses it is usually has elements that work. She is always so fashion forward and fearless with her choices -it makes sense that she picks it herself.

    • http://pleasewelcomeyourjudges.com/ Brian @ PWYJudges

The perfect way to start the day. Thanks, Didi!

    • Anonymous

The dress is phenomenal, but I’m not sure about her deployment of it. Her bow is looking pretty forlorn and that is yoga hair for reals.

    • Anonymous

To me I would not call the dress strictly beautiful, but this is one of the rare dresses that made me seriously take a LONG gander at it and admire all the different elements going on.  It looks like she copied the model right down to the ‘do…but she is owning the shit out of it, so nicely done for her.

    • Anonymous

Thatt is freakking fabbulous. And with the boww a little flattenned, she looks better in it than the moddel. Gorrgeouss!

      • Anonymous

        Niccely ddone :)

        • Anonymous

          Thannks.

    • Anonymous

By the way, fellers, snow expected (and quite cold Sunday), so you should be able to pull out those new winter togs.

      • Anonymous

One hopes they will tweet pictures.

    • Anonymous

Now, that’s a red carpet dress!  Spectacular. Total love!  And I actually like the extremely simple hair with a gown that is one sequin and pinstripe away from overdone.

Thanks for posting this first this morning, guys, and washing away the bitter taste of last night’s cracktastic challenge setup and judging.

      • Anonymous

The thing that shocked me when I looked closely-those aren’t pinstripes! They are polka-dots! And they look so bloody good!

    • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

Amazing. I love the photo where she’s doing the little wave. Like a goddess scratching her nose.

    • Anonymous

I thought she was Evan Rachel Wood when I first glanced. Or in other words: Girl, you are killing it and you look ten years too young. Werk.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_R34D3TG5XAEKM6C2KWJG73V27M Laura

Evan Rachel Wood and Diane Kruger could be sisters.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_R34D3TG5XAEKM6C2KWJG73V27M Laura

      PS that gown is incredible.

    • http://twitter.com/democracydiva Democracy Diva

That gown is all kinds of amazing.

And it took me a year and a half of fashion blogging to spell Scarlett Johansson correctly.

    • Anonymous

      J’adore.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1253053236 Belle Burnett

Yeah, that hair. Maybe she thought it would push more attention to the dress?

    • Anonymous

It’s a striking dress, not sure that I love it. Those bows really need the dramatic poof and I really hate the belt.

Also, that’s what my hair looks like when I have to run out to the grocery and I haven’t washed my hair. She gets props from me, but not a werq.

    • Anonymous

God that is some Friday morning pretty.

    • Anonymous

we never really felt like true fashion bloggers until we could spell Giambattista Valli’s name without looking it up

Hey!  I thought Lorenzo was Italian.

About the dress, I like it, but on her it suffers from “bow collapse”  (rather like Laura Bennett’s Paris dress suffered from collar collapse).  I must say that when I saw the top, I thought “Rami Kashou”!

      • Anonymous

Me too!!! I thought “Rami” when I saw the top. I think I have been watching Project Runway for way to long since I see PR designer outfits or similarities wherever I look!

    • Call me Bee

Beautiful garment and she looks great, but isn’t this a bit…formal and OTT for a movie premier?  In Germany?  Looks completely Oscar-worthy to me…

      • Anonymous

Plus it looks like she is wearing platform peep-toes, so the gown is really long.

    • Anonymous

      Beautiful

    • Anonymous

She looks fabulous standing still. But as you can see in the photo of her waving, the shrug/shoulder thing limits your movement, makes you look as if you are crouching. As a designer, over the years, I’ve had many women asking for styles that I have to explain will limit your arm movement. Not good for hugging (wedding) or waving…perhaps that is where the”royal wave” originated.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

Gasp-worthy.  I think only Diane and Zoe could pull that one off, though. And MAYBE Evan Rachel.

    • Anonymous

      Yes!  This is a WERQ!!

    • Anonymous

      Amazing.

    • Anonymous

Agree with the “WERQ” assessment but I really HATE the printed shrug, or whatever, on the top of this gown.  Take that off, make it a strapless sheath top, and then you’d have WOW along with the WERQ.

    • Anonymous

Now that’s what I’m talking about bitches. Fabulosity to the nth degree!

    • Anonymous

      Wow, gorge!

    • Anonymous

       I’m so jealous right now…
I’m not crazy about the hair either, but it takes some skill to walk down in a dress like that and make it look completelly effortless…

    • Anonymous

WERQ!! I do wish she hadn’t copied the runway style 100% – but that’s just nitpicking. I think she looks amaze-tastic.

    • Anonymous

This is one hell of a MOVIE STAR look! Sparkles! It is tragically overlong though. Too bad it couldn’t be significantly hemmed, but I guess she couldn’t return it then, could she?
Though I usually don’t encourage women to wear heavier makeup, this dress plus this hair requires a stronger statement on the face. Especially if she’s going with the tiny earrings. Smokier eye? More contoured cheeks? Then the neutral lip is OK. Or with this eye scheme, then a nice red lipstick would be classic.

    • Anonymous

Someone please please tell me what is going on on her right ear??
Here it is up close http://www.fabsugar.com/Diane-Kruger-Giambattista-Valli-Berlin-Film-Festival-21695304

      PS -I love that ring!

      • Anonymous

BlueTooth implant? Hands free all the time, baby!

      • Sara__B

I originally thought I liked everything but her hair. I hadn’t noticed that ear jewelry/cell phone signal enhancer. I really don’t like that!

    • Allyson Wells

Is that a snow leopard she’s holding?

    • Anonymous

That woman really knows how to wear clothes.  This look is not my cup of tea but she looks great.

    • Anonymous

The top of this dress is odd but I like it. The skirt is really beautiful. I never like this tiny hairdo look on anyone. It looks like no effort was put into styling it and it makes her forehead look huge.

    • http://twitter.com/TheRealSandraOh Sandra Oh

There’s not too many women in the world that can wear this dress.  It’s a whole lot of dress.

    • Anonymous

I’m not a fan of the top of the dress, but I agree the whole thing works, somehow. I could see Kate Middleton wearing this, too.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

If the attached caplet thing wasn’t there, this dress would be gorgeous.

    • Anonymous

That is one hell of a gorgeous dress, perfectly suited for her. WERQ.

    • http://twitter.com/c3p0_II Aerwyn

Maybe it’s the hair, but I’m picking up a Borg queen vibe from the waist up…

    • Anonymous

The dress is gorgeous, but I keep wanting her to take off the shrug to see the rest of it.

    • Anonymous

There is much I could dislike about this, but I love it. That’s the mark of a great design. She is wearing the hell out of it. So many women would look like fashion victims in this, but she looks chic as hell. She even looks comfortable and somehow effortless.

    • Anonymous

      Gorgeous….

    • Judy_J

      Love it.

    • lilibetp

I used to wear my hair that way for ballet class.  When I was 15.  And despite putting it up sans hairbrush during my walk from school to ballet class in very windy Duncan, Oklahoma, mine usually looked better than hers does.

    • Yosa Addiss

My goodness, but her posture is perfection!

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Fantastic gown, but her hair is disappointing.  The gown deserves better.

    • Sara__B

She got everything right but the hair.

    • Anonymous

ooooh yes. another look to covet if I were thin, pretty, and rich

    • http://www.kittenmasks.com/ kittenmasks

I hate the bag. She should’ve just left without it.

She looks extremely confident about the way she looks, though.

    • Anonymous

Girl knows how to wear clothes and it was all going fine until the final shot – those black platform peeptoes take it out of WERQ territory and into a mere all-caps IN.

    • MilaXX

Agreed. Love the dress, hate the hair.

    • Anonymous

      Gurl you look good!

Can I just ask how is Jessica Biel his muse when he has The Modern Dietrich looking like THIS in his clothes?

    • Anonymous

      FIERCE!

    • Anonymous

Pace yourselves boys. It’s going to be a long week, and we don’t want you to miss a minute of fabulosity! Enjoy!

    • Anonymous

Sorry, guys, but I hate the dress. :–(

    • Anonymous

Love the dress, but OMG what is up with the hair? SO BAD.

    • Anonymous

OT – but I hear rumors she and Josh J have broken up. She’s been alone a lot lately.

    • Toto Maya

Damn, I want that shit NOW. I rarely actually want a dress but I want this one it is fucking fantastic.

    • Anonymous

GORGEOUS dress, bad ‘do, needs stronger makeup.  Diane’s rockin’ it.

    • Anonymous

      Yup.

There is No. Way. No. way. AT. ALL. you could describe this ensemble to someone and have them believe that it looks fabulous. But, it does.

    • Anonymous

That gingham shrung thing has got to go. Yuck.

    • Anonymous

I can’t imagine a mere mortal wearing this, but she really pulls it off. And I covet her bag. And not just because it is the only piece of her ensemble I could wear.  :)

    • Anonymous

The dress is CRAZY — it looks like she’s playing the Licorice Queen in “The Nutcracker Suite.” However, she is so owning it with regal fierceness that I have to bow down and say, “Well played, Teutonic Ice Princess.” Oof on the Frau Bleucher bun.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

      Fabulous.  Full stop.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

Team Hate the Hair and … I know this is nitpicking … but her bow’s too flat and floppy.  I like it better on the model.

    • Anonymous

so right. that dress has a lot going on, and it really doesn’t seem like it should work–but she looks amazing.

    • Anonymous

Sensational. Someone really needs to manufacture some tabloid rivalry between her and Evan Rachel Wood. Bitches won’t be able to resist  upping the fashion ante as an implicit response. Guaranteed. And then we can all just sit back and marvel.

    • leilah

There’s a helluva lot going on with that dress, and it take a gorgeous woman with a regal mien to pull it off — which DK is…and does.  It would have gone stratospheric with a lovely chignon, but then no one could have spoken to her for a month (or at least not if it was me)….

    • Anonymous

      Gorge.

    • Anonymous

      Wunderbar!
(I’d have changed up the hair just a tad, but she’s got SO much of the right stuff right, I do not care.)

    • Anonymous

An updo was the right idea with a busy neckline, but I’ve never been one for the “my ponytail is too tight” look.

And speaking of the neckline, it’s styled much better on the model.  Diane needed some tissue paper in there or something. :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1540233153 Malve Lyborg

HA, JUST LIKE ME! Walked that same red carpet only 12 hours ago!

Just w/o someone making a photo of me. AND w/o being a famous actress. AND w/o being superior beautiful. AND w/o wearing a high priced sleeveless gown but a thick kneelong goosedown coat.

OK, not THAT just like me…

    • Anonymous

OK but her “neck bow”could use a little fluffing up. It’s much better on the runway model!

    • Anonymous

Achtung! Fraulein Kruger is in the HAUS!

      So glamorous!

    • http://twitter.com/connectinglines Me Again

She looks frickin fantastic.  LOOOOVE the dress.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Fabulous. Always jealous of Mrs. Pacey!

    • Anonymous

would a chignon kill a bitch?
