WERQ: Cate Blanchett in Alexander McQueen

Posted on February 01, 2012

We’re feeling giddy over the prospect of a Cate outfit that inspires snaps – it’s been far too long, kittens – and that has us wondering if she deserves a royal title, like Queen Helen of Fuckinfantastica. We could call her Empress Cate of Getthefuckoutofmyway but then we fear this will become a thing with us and we’ll be struggling to come up with many more titles down the road.

Whatever. The point is…

Cate Blanchett attends the 2012 AACTA awards in Australia in Alexander McQueen.

She made us gasp.

Alexander McQueen Spring 2012 Collection/Model: Marte Mei van Haaster (IMG)

Admittedly, the hair makes her look like Mia Wasikowska’s mom and the shoes are making us wince, but she’s so KILLING IT in that dress that any concerns are rendered pointless. You WERQ that gold McQueen, lady!

And thank you for removing the belt, too.  Thumbs up, girlfriend!

      • Anonymous

Removing the belt totally saved it.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I really hate that dress but she is totally WERQing it! How can anyone look good in something so hideous?

      • Cathy S

This is precisely how I feel. The only part of the look I like is the clutch (and sue me, I like her hair) but she’s WERQing the crap out of that ugly dress.

    • Anonymous

Sublime. Is she human? I think not. She really is an Elf Queen of Fabulous Serenity.

      • Anonymous

        Yes. Yes she is.

      • http://twitter.com/arodenha Alli

“Elf Queen of Fabulous Serenity.” I like it. TLo, your work is done for you.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1063532157 Jeanne Moran de Grasse

I like the dress and the changes from the original!  The fabric reminds me of McFadden fabric… I do so miss McFadden designs :)

    • Isana Leshchinskaya

i don’t know, maybe it’s the material, but it looks like it doesn’t fit her properly

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_L6FKGKUXWF6QSWWYAHJZYKKI3E Adrian

I had that same thought, but then I kept looking at it on her, and on the model…and I think that might be part of the “thing” of this dress. I mean, I think it’s intentionally supposed to ripple around her body like that. I’m thinking it came across in person more like rippling than like bunchy wrinkling.

    • Molly OBM

Yay! She had me from the homepage, didn’t even need to see the rest of the outfit

    • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

Oh, I just adore her. I want to be her when I grow up.

I have to go practice wearing awesome dresses, BRB.

    • Anonymous

Ah, those shoes!    But overall, this is a true WERQ.  She looks amazing!

    • MilaXX

I like everything but the shoes which for me makes this just a hair short of a WERQ. A Werq in my mind is 100% on point.

      • Anonymous

Yes MilaXX. This is not quite a Werq because of the shoes. She needed a much higher heel with less of a platform, in a lighter color. These peep toes make her legs look kinda stumpy. It hurts me to say that, btw, about our Cate.

    • Anonymous

Gorgeous, and the bracelet is perfect.

    • Presumptuous Insect

      I luvs her.

    • Anonymous

Totally agree on the hair and shoes.  She gets a werq! not a WERQ! from me!

    • Anonymous

Phenomenal – is that dress spun from gold?

      • Laurie Bergman

I know!  It’s like she had an army of fairies spin her a frothy concoction from wisps of gold!

        • Anonymous

That’s what Elrond and Arwen and the gang spend their time doing.

    • marcella peek

Really?  Even with the way the seams down the front pucker?  Hmmmm, I think the in is just because you like her so much.

      • Anonymous

T & Lo are professionally bitter and thus do not let their love of fantastic bitches affect their snaps.

    • Anonymous

I like the hair and makeup. It keeps the look from being too severe.

She is WERQing that dress like no one else could.

      Empress Cate the Great!

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I don’t like the dress.  It doesn’t fit properly, the seams are puckery, and, as a consequence, it looks cheap.  Also, terrible shoes.

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

Thank you for being the first to say it like it is. She looks like a fussy female Oscar (Oscaretta?).

      • Anonymous

Dress looks like it was made out of the drapery at Buckingham Palace.  Too heavy looking.  Not a WERQ.

    • Anonymous

I actually like the hair, but I agree the shoes are an oof.

    • Anonymous

I dunno.  the dress is all pucker-y and rumpled.  And I find the shoes distractingly hideous.

    • http://profiles.google.com/withano Loren S

The color and shape are amazing on her, but it’s shiny and puckering on Cate in a way that it isn’t on the runway model, which makes it look a bit fussy and poorly-fitted.

    • Anonymous

Not a fan of the dress, but DAMN she is WERQing the shit out of it. Good choice in removing the belt. Hate the shoes.

      She is exquisite.

    • Anonymous

She is WERQing the dress but the shoes ruin the whole look IMHO.

    • Anonymous

QUEEN CATE. Bow down, bitches. THAT is how you werq a McQueen.

    • Anonymous

      Oh I love that neckline!

    • Anonymous

oooo i LOVE this dress, and i’m so glad someone is wearing it!!! agreed on the hair and shoes.

    • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

Strangely, I do not care for the golden McQueen number, but Her face looks amazing. Absolutely gorgeous.

    • Anonymous

She is timeless and I love her. Also I saw her once and she glowed.

      • Anonymous

I believe it (the glow). Someone once told me most of the most celebrated of the acting celebrities do ‘glow’ in person and I didn’t believe it until I saw Julia Roberts in her private life as Mrs. Lyle Lovett and she did, indeed, have eerily lovely and glowing skin.  I don’t know if it’s skin care or makeup or star power.

      • jabes

That’s such a great way to describe her.  I remember seeing some video of her on the red carpet at the Golden Globes, I think it was, several years ago wearing a silver dress, and there was this split-second when there were all these flash bulbs going off and flickering on her skin, that she was so beautiful it shocked me, almost scared me (don’t ask me why, but that’s truly what I felt).

    • Joyce VG

Regal! Glorious! Magic!  Except for the shoes…

    • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

      Wow. She nailed it.

    • Sara__B

The seam puckers are terribly distracting. The dress was dry cleaned and not pressed properly? Kate has been sitting for a long time? The dress is meant for a much taller woman so it’s bunching up a bit? I need the seam puckers (and those sensible shoes) to go away!

    • Anonymous

Dress looks puckered on the model, too. And Getthefuckoutofmyway-fabulous on Cate.

    • Anonymous

She looks radiant!  I love the hair and the face and the smile.  I’ll just not scroll down far enough to see the shoes and then the look is perfect.

      • Anonymous

Yes! The best accessory is that radiant smile!

    • Anonymous

      Love the clutch.

    • marilyn

I like the understated sheen of the runway dress better than Cate’s.  The gold on Cate’s dress is too shiny.  I don’t know if the fabric in Cate’s dress is different than what was used on the runway dress, or if it’s the same fabric but Cate is wearing it under different lighting.  No matter.  The dress is too shiny and overworked for me.

      • Anonymous

I think the shininess comes from the flash cameras being used by the paparazzi.   I don’t think it would look so shiny/gold tone in person.

Those shoes are a crime though.

    • Mariah J

I like it so much better sans belt…that much gold shouldn’t work on anyone but somehow it does.

    • http://twitter.com/arodenha Alli

      PERFECTION. That is all.

    • Anonymous

      Love it!

    • Anonymous

THose are Christina Hendricks shoes if ever I’ve seen them.  But aside from that, lovely.

    • Anonymous

      Goddess.

    • Anonymous

Disagree. The collar/neck piece is gorgeous. I think it needed the belt. Shoes are awful, and she’s a bit of a rumpled mess.

    • Anonymous

She always looks gorgeous in gold. I like the bronze of the shoe, I think it was the germ of a good idea, but the shape is both blah and yuck. Want her bracelet.

    • http://wipgirl.wordpress.com/ kristel

      She looks luminous.

    • Anonymous

Wow, she makes that gaudy dress look so classy.

    • Anonymous

If I were to describe this dress it would sound something like:  shiny textured gold fitted dress with Christmas garland around the neckline and ruffles at the bottom.  That sounds hideous but somehow it looks great on her.  It does great things for her figure.  Definitely a WERK

    • http://tigergray.blogspot.com/ Tiger Gray

Really? I hate it. Well, except for the neck. I think the rest looks rumpled.

    • CQAussie

Fantastic!!  But yes, hate the shoes.  I love her hair and make-up too!

    • Anonymous

Needs the belt.  Way too much gold.

    • http://profiles.google.com/claudiaberry Claudia Berry

Damn damn damn, she looks awesome – and the dress looks better on her than on the model.

    • Anonymous

I just cannot get past the sensible shoes. Is there anything worse you can say about shoes? Especially shoes paired w/McQueen.

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

What is that fabric? It’s exquisite!

    • Anonymous

I don’t mind the Fonzie hair but I hate the shoes. The dress is also hideous but she looks hot in it. I love her looks.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LDLNDAFFRCIWNXZFYTIE46OJWI Linda

The seaming on the skirt looks bunchy.

    • Anonymous

She looks great in a dress I really dislike. It’s like one enormous bunch of Christmas tinsel. And the puckering makes it look a little chip. Not my favorite McQueen.

      • Anonymous

That’s it, thank you! I knew something was bothering me. She looks gorgeous, because from the neck up she’s glowing, and from the neck down she has a killing figure which, I admit, the dress shows off nicely.  But still. That dress. Not just chip, but in a chip way.

    • Anonymous

Love it, love her – hoping shoulder pads make it down the clothing chain because I need them.

    • Anonymous

Her skin!  I am surprised that her coloring/hair works so well in this color that on many would just be godawful.

    • Anonymous

from the waist up it’s a great dress. below that it’s either a little bit too long or, probably more accurately, the seam that’s giving it its mermaidiness should not be there. or at least it shouldve been less constricting. one gather too many, it is, at the very least. also the shoes are pretty awful &, together w/ that seam & the awkward length, bring it down to a level below where it coulda been.

      • Anonymous

totally agree with your entire comment

    • http://twitter.com/anairbb Briana Blanchard

Love love love love love love love her! All hail, Empress Cate of Getthefuckoutofmyway

    • Anonymous

Well, someone’s bound to say it, so today it’s me.

I like it better on the runway model. It’s perfectly aligned, the color is more elegant, the dress requires the extra height and slenderness, the shoes are killer, and I like the styling with the crocheted hair snood, and the belt.

That said, Cate’s face is gorgeous here (love the lip color), as is that clutch, but her footwear was chosen by a pre-schooler reaching into a paper bag full of shoes from the thrift store.

    • butter nut

im not as in love as you guys are, but she looks better than she has in a good while.  is it wrong that i kind of wish this was in a color?  if this was a deep red, she’d be shutting it down forever.

    • http://www.facebook.com/chloe.stabler Chloe Stabler

That collar looks SOO GOOD on her!

    • Anonymous

And she looks radiant and happy! That’s a huge part of a WERQ for me.

I think it could have been two inches shorter. But in all, I LOVE IT!

    • Anonymous

That dress seems like the color shouldn’t work with her hair and skin tone, but it totally does. I think it was the right call to skip a belt, too, since the model has no chest, so the collar hangs differently than it does on Cate.

    • Anonymous

Whenever she wears a McQueen I always gasp.  They go together so incredibly well, each elevating the other to a whole other level.  I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else wear McQueen like she does.

Damn….I need to get my hands on some SKII.  The woman is GLOWING!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1248212910 Jessie Melcher Brown

Don’t like the puckery seams.  Looks wrinkly.

    • Anonymous

Lovely. I’ll be having a gold moment in a couple of months . I will keep this in mind.

    • http://twitter.com/anacedillo Ana Cedillo

its so shiny wtf, and those shoes are not cute, and when i saw past the bracelet i thought she was holding her keys. but yeah i guess she does look good

    • Susan Crawford

Love. Her. Snaptastic (except for the shoes and the bracelet). Blanchett + McQueen = Fabboo.

    • http://twitter.com/wednesdaydreams Natalie

The moment i saw this I was like, QUEEN CATE, QUEEN CATE, GO JOIN QUEEN HELENA AND EMPRESS TILDA.

    • http://twitter.com/aStudiobytheSea Jody Lee

Nah, my first thought was prickly gold organza and shredded tinsel, and how uncomfortable that dress looks.

    • Anonymous

It’s a bit too shiny for my taste, but other than that, she looks great in it. I love McQueen’s shoulders.

    • Anonymous

      She’s back!  Yaaaay!

    • Anonymous

      ohmiogodohmigodohmigod

    • Aly Light

Is it just me, or does she suddenly look ten years younger?

    • Anonymous

gorgeous!  she has such a waist she don’t need no stinking belt.  i like the styling just fine (except for the hair, of course.  what is it with hollywood hair these days anyways?)  and i think the shoes were a good choice-they’re dark red, aren’t they?  i would have liked to see earrings- not huge showy ones, but something to distract from that hair.

    • http://twitter.com/vintagesewing VFL Miss Helenes

Sorry, but if that dress was on Project Runway, someone would get eaten alive by Nina for all the puckering.

    • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

Wow. So much better on her than the model.

    • Anonymous

The first impression is it’s waaay too tight — but on closer look it’s probably very comfortable. Anyway. Looks too tight and shiny. She’s got a fantastic glow to her face so I don’t mind the hair, I think it’s helping.

    • Anonymous

The dress is awesome and she wears it well. Much better without the belt.

I think the bracelet & shoes strike the wrong note(s).

      • Pennymac

I like the bracelet, but those shoes take it down  notch for me. I love the ones on the model.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

I love Cate, and maybe it’s the light, but the dress looks wrinkled, needs a belt, and the shoes don’t work. She is WERQing that color, though.

      • Anonymous

Just so . . . (your comment is *exactly* what I was prepared to write).
And wha??  Wondering why the vertical seams on the front of CB’s skirt are puckered when the model’s certainly aren’t.

        • Anonymous

It looks like poor construction on those seams. For that she gets an OUT from me.

    • Anonymous

The hair, she went wrong with the hair.

    • Anonymous

I don’t think she needs a title.  Is she not just “The Blanchett”?

    • http://theargiehome.blogspot.com/ Gus Casals

Cate can rock the McQueen’s like nobody’s business.
As for her being Mia’s mother, I hope some casting director is reading this and puts something together ASAP

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Oh dear oh dear oh dear. A wrinkely, puckery McQueen on our dear Cate. With bad shoes, and not so great hair. Sorry, not even a lower case werq here.  McQueen and Cate both know better.

    • Anonymous

actually love this on her..this is HER color…awkward length I think…

    • Anonymous

I love the dress, but I think it makes her look a little short with a too-big head.

    • Anonymous

I think she has such a stunning body or work in acting, dressing and being CateBlanchett, that there’s your title for her… she is once and for always….CateBlanchett…

    • http://twitter.com/VicksieDo VicksieDo

From the ankles up, that’s fantastic!  Go Cate!!

    • Kristy Evans

I hate to disagree with my beloved T-Lo, but that fabric looks really cheap. It’s looks like it’s made from the discarded remnants of a Christmas bow factory. I like the cut of it – that collar is to die – but the fabric is too shiny and looks tortured.

    • Anonymous

    • Anonymous

      LOVE IT!

    • Anonymous

      Gorgeous. WERQ

    • Judy_J

Hair and shoes are a bit of an issue with me, but she looks so happy it doesn’t matter.  She looks great and she knows it.  Love her!

    • Anonymous

The dress is gorgeous, but on her it is just.there.  It needs some real styling… her hair is pitiful and those shoes are awful and that bracelet thingy is just odd.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

Love love love love LOVE hate the shoes

    • Anonymous

She definitely could have done better with the shoes, but I like the hair and I particularly love the makeup. Just a little drama around the eyes and otherwise very fresh.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/GTG3A5BVL3JGIFT5M4MSPWYNCM Mathilde

Head turning and gorgeous. I love this gold. It’s so much better than on the model, and her face is pretty while still letting her personnality out. Just beautiful !

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jane-Morris/1076502799 Jane Morris

      How about Cate of Madeyasuckalltheairoutoftheroom.

    • nancy

Just Queen Cate, that will do. I like that she didn’t wear a belt.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

Wow.  I love it.  Surprised by the gold – she’s rocking it for sure.

    • Anonymous

I disagree that this is a WERQ. Her make-up is great but this dress REALLY needed something dramatic like a hat or a hair-do.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

      Looks better with the belt.

    • Anonymous

even with the minus points for hair and shoes, she is WERQing it. And she is “wearing” that dress instead of the dress wearing her because she is Cate, Queen of Fantastic

    • Anonymous

She is a source of inspiration, for me and hopefully for many young starlets out there…I feel some type of title would be fun, like Lady of Snaptopia or something   :)

    • Anonymous

The closeups allow one to see that the rippling is intentional.  You can
see stitches along the valleys of the fabric.  Whether it’s fit or
construction, I like it on Cate with more ripples than on the model with
      less.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

If you want to give her a title, I think it should be something less than Queen Helen — a lower ranking royal.  She has to wait for Helen to vacate the throne, not start a competing nation!

    • frankystein123

      DAAAAAAAAAAMN.

    • http://www.facebook.com/bert.keeter Bert Keeter

      N better without belt!
