Sarah Jessica Parker in Oscar de la Renta and Theory

Posted on February 09, 2012

This is kind of adorably loopy:

Sarah Jessica Parker attends the amfAR New York Gala To Kick Off Fall 2012 Fashion Week in  New York City in an Oscar de la Renta gown. Bracelets by Fenton. Earring by Fred Leighton. Shoes by Manolo Blahnik.

Oscar de la Renta Pre-Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Kate King

She’s Biker Barbie! But still ever the lady with her white gloves.

The gal doesn’t always get it right – then again, who does? – but when she wants to have fun with her fashion, she’s top of the class among celebrities.

Also, Leighton Meester? You just got OWNED. Haha! Point and laugh!

Oh, and Sarah, if you got a new hair and makeup queen in your life – because it looks like you did – GIVE HIM A SIGNING BONUS. Trust on this.

hmph. except for the tiara, I like the princess at the museum better than biker barbie. this just makes me think of the eighties. yea, the dress is way fancier, but it looks like early Madonna redux.

    • Anonymous

Maybe even late Madonna, cuz of the gloves.

  • Anonymous

I admire anyone for whom that dress and those shoes do not equal a visit to the ER.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, sorry, even with the white jacket, Leighton did it better. And those gloves are just gross.

    •ía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

I agree, and those gloves are pure Minnie Mouse.

      • Anonymous

Why do they look so huge?

        • Anonymous

Because SJP is so tiny she needs to shop in the children’s section.

  • Alexis Peñafuerte Wenceslao

I LOVE.  She is so chic.

  • Anonymous

Ew. Although I’m not a fan of either look, I’d give the win to Meester, whose pieces at least look plausibly paired.

SJP’s jacket ruins a gorgeous dress, which in turn ruins a jacket that would be pretty bitchin’ if combined with something, almost anything, else.

    And the gloves…WTF?

Hair and makeup do look good, though.

  • Anonymous

Yes about the hair & makeup. In spades.

  • Anonymous

Yes. I like it a lot. Most people would look ridiculous, but she’s not most people.
The hair looks healthy and her make-up looks fresh and pretty. Looks like there’s less black eyeliner and you can actually see her pretty blue eyes.

  • Anonymous

beautiful dress..I bet she looks great in it once the jacket comes off.

  • Iyad Hilal

  • Anonymous

I have to disagree here. At least Leighton Meester’s getup had some sort of context. SJP looks like there was a fire in her house and she just grabbed everything within reach and put it on. None of this works together. They’re all lovely pieces though.

    • Anonymous

Thank You, I was trying to figure out why this didn’t work for me and you nailed it.

    • Anonymous

I don’t usually rant, but I am distressed by this look.  That is one of the most gorgeous dresses (among many gorgeous dresses) in the OdlR pre-Fall collection.  Just breathtakingly stunning.  And she utterly trashed it.   The dress’s fabric is so luxe, beautifully proportioned, flowing. It deserves so much better than being paired with a leather biker jacket, ridiculous white gloves and a floppy gray shoulder bag squeezed under her arm.  Shoes are ok.  It just deserved such better treatment than what she did to it.   OdlR must be cringing.  Her hair looks great though.

      • Angela

So glad you posted this pic! I felt sure she must have just been cold and grabbed her “go-to” jacket on the way out the door. She could have done much better with a wrap. If she had really wanted this to be her “look” for the evening, I doubt she would have taken it all off!

      • Nancy Abrams

Sorry, but that huge necklace is just continuing the desecration of that beautiful dress. Too big and too heavy for such a delicate fabric and color.

  • Anonymous

Put her in a bag and critics would love it. THis is not bad, but if you had any other person wear it…It would be getting talked about terribly.

  • Robert Sanchez

Just hair and makeup? I think she might have (as Kathy Griffin says mockingly) been recently “to the dentist.”

  • Anonymous

If you’d have told me this dress was going to be on the RC, I would’ve guessed it would be SJP who would wear it. But I would never guess she’d wear it like she did.  I’m not quite sure how I feel about this, but I don’t think I like it.

  • Amy Ellinger

This is such a tiny detail, but I love how her shoes always look like they fit.  She has beautiful taste in shoes and its so nice to not see toes hanging out, and huge gaps at the heel.

    • Anonymous

      True that.

  • Anonymous

i LOVE pairing frilly girly with badass.  LOVE IT.  it’s a huge part of my own wardrobe.  this is awesome, and so is ms SJP.

  • Anonymous

I think she looks fabulicious–and I’m not a huge fan.  Love her hair, love that shade of pink, love it with the black leather, love the white gloves. She does, however, need to get someone to hold her…shoulder bag????  WTF?????

    • Anonymous

Exactly, wtf is with the shoulder bag? It doesn’t go with any part of the outfit, especially not a gown! Hair and makeup are fab at least.

  • Anonymous

I don’t hate it.  It is fun, and at least it’s not the same ol’ thing.  I think maybe I would like it more without the gloves.  It’s maybe one too many things…princessy dress, biker coat, queen elizabeth gloves.

Hair is GREAT and makeup is so good.

  • Anonymous

Also, Leighton Meester? You just got OWNED.

I think they both look silly. At least Meester has the excuse that it was for a television show.

  • Anonymous

I feel like I saw another photo of her in this dress, sans biker jacket, with a gorgeous necklace–probably ditched the leather once she got indoors. Re: the gloves–perhaps she’s read enough comments about her hands.

  • Anonymous

I’m not sure I understand why her hair and makeup are so much better. She’s still sporting the cocker spaniel hair and the way dark eyeliner. Her hair color looks kind of nice, but other than that, no. Meh on the hair and makeup, and as for the rest of it. Oy. No. She looks like a doofus with those silly white gloves.

  • Anonymous

I dunno. That dress is just soooo beautiful and I feel like neither SJP or Leighton are bringing it what it deserves.

  • Anonymous

  • Anonymous

I love her shoes. I don’t really care about the rest.

  • Anonymous

Like the concept, don’t like the execution.

  • Anonymous

Agree on the hair but she’s still too heavy with the eyeliner. That much works on 30 YO eyes. Not on nearly 50 YO ones.

    • Vera

I think that’s the best I’ve seen her hair look. The eyeliner doesn’t suit her, though.

  • Anonymous

Sorry but ball gown with leather jacket has been done to death. The gloves are a cute touch, but not especially noteworthy. Hair and makeup are better than they’ve been of late, but nothing to gasp about. Didn’t someone get ripped for wearing this dress 2-3 months ago? I do like the dress, and I generally hate pink.

  • Anonymous

Eh, this isn’t coming together for me, and I usually like the leather jacket over something fancy thing. (I wore crinkly red dkny party dress with a leather jacket not all that long ago.) I wish she wore the jacket open, so we could see the bodice of the dress. it would make the look more pulled together for me.

The gloves look like she’s ready to ask the photographer to turn his head and cough.

  • Belle Burnett

I think she looks so much better than usual. Love the dress, love the jacket, and I’m glad she’s wearing gloves because her hands scare me. I have the same problem (so does Madonna) — my hands look 20 years older than my face, if I could get away with it, I’d wear gloves too.

  • DKBB

Huh…my first thought was “Grey Gardens.”

  • Patrick Cleary

God, no. Once again, SJP is praised (sort of) for something any other woman would be brought to the institution for. This isn’t an outfit, this is a woman so desperate to be photographed because her career stalled out about 10 years ago that she throws horrible shit together and pretends to be a character made up by a different stylist.

  • Edwina

Sorry, that’s just a ridiculous looking hodge-podge of garments thrown together.

  • Judy_J

Her hair and makeup are better than usual…if she would just not use the heavy eyeliner, or at least choose a lighter shade than black.

  • oohsparkley!

I keep forgetting I have a black leather motorcycle jacket that I could pair with something other than jeans.  Maybe not a fancy schmancy pink party dress, but I could wear it just for a change of pace.  I suppose it’s intentional, but the sleeves of the jacket look too short, esp. with the stupid white gloves.  Her hair and makeup does look great!  Makes her look like she might have had a little something, something done.

  • Lori

I get it that you don’t watch GG but why are you pretending LM’s outfit was her own and not a costume.  It should not be judged as if she selected it for herself as, say, SJP has done here with her ridiculous accessorizing.  Inside, minus the jacket and gloves and with her gorgeous necklace showing, the gown looked spectacular.
Hair and makeup, I don’t see any improvement.

  • Anonymous

She’s no longer allowed to choose her own outfits.

  • Edwina

Her hair color does look better but I would like it a skosh shorter.

  • Anonymous

Wretched thing to do to a beautiful dress. Terrible styling. Bad, bad, bad. And I’m usually a big advocate of hers.

  • Paola Thomas

Like the concept, would look better with an open jacket, hair is gorgeous (just parting it one inch to the side makes all the difference), don’t get the praise of the make up, she’s still drawing black raccoon lines round her eyes.  And if you’re intending to shove your bag under your armpit, don’t use one with a shoulder strap. That’s the sort of thing I do…

    • Anonymous

your shoulder bag comment was so funny and true… what she doesn’t have another bag ?  plus it matches her shoes… isn’t that the dreaded matchy matchy ? ? ?

  • Anonymous

Is something wrong with the bodices on Oscar de la Renta’s pink dresses? Cause…

  • Kyle Crawford

sometimes it would be all the fun to break the comments down by man / woman. I’m guessing ( generally ) all the gays are loving this, and all the ladies seem to not so much…..

  • Sara__B

Adorably loopy is exactly right. I like the biker jacket worn as an overcoat, but not with white gloves. Her hair is looks glossy and pretty, but she needs to soften those rings of eyeliner.  (Later, when she takes off her jacket, she has a huge statement necklace underneath, and switches her shoulder bag for a clutch. I hope we get to discuss a photo of that as well!)

    • Anonymous

Thank you!  I was trying to like the makeup, but I still think the Rings of Kohl are way too heavy.

  • Anonymous

She’s wearing gloves because if you look at recent photos her hands are OLD….

  • Anonymous

My only problem is that this dress is SO fantastic that any covering of it is a fashion crime.  But it kind of works…in a crazy funky way…still would rather have seen her in just the dress, she’d look superb.

    • Sara__B has a good photo of her without the jacket, gloves, and shoulder bag. Those were apparently what she wore “on the street”.

      • Edwina

Thanks, the dress without the jacket is just divine.

      • Anonymous

Wow, that necklace is amazing!  Can’t even see the Fred Leighton earring though.

      • Anonymous

Thanks Sara!  Wow, that is a great dress and she looks great in it.

  • Edwina

The purse is killing me and not in a good way.

  • Anonymous

Say what you will, but the girl is not afraid to take chances.

  • voter1

I’m getting a little tired of the Carrie Bradshaw look.  Perhaps she develop her own style not based on a character she’s played.

  •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Brava to her hair & makeup queen!

I hear you on the adorably loopy thing, but I’m not sure this one works.  One false move with “I’m Playing Dress Up” and the next thing you know you’re at an Academy luncheon in a ickle raincloud dress.

  • Anonymous

    Nope, still too much eyeliner.

  • marilyn

How horrible.  I wish I could have seen the dress on SJP because it is gorgeous on the runway model.  To bad JSP had an attack of copyitis and took an idea from a teenager who already looked bad.  What a waste.

Maybe she did this deliberatelyto get attention, like Kelly Osbourne’s gray hair, and Katy Perry’s neon hair. My theory is that the best way to deal with attention w****s is to ignore them.

  • kvlm

    wow.  over accessorize much?

  • Anonymous

ok….. somehow i’m fine with everything, but why the gloves? I think they ruin the whole thing…. maybe because of the color? they just throw me off….

  • Laura Schultz

I’m sorry, I heart SJP and I forgive her quite a bit, I like what a lot of others don’t like about her, but… I HATE THIS!!! HOW CAN YOU COVER UP THAT BEAUTIFUL DRESS WITH THAT JACKET!? WTF? And the gloves and the bag. NNNNNOOOOO!

  • MilaXX

I love it as wacky as it may be. Sure she’s channeling Carrie Bradshaw, but the 2 have long since merged personas. Perhaps it’s in the attitude, I think shes WERQing it.

  • Maria McGarry

Hate.  Hate that the gloves make her hands look enormous, (like clown hands) hate the zipper jacket and want to use a brush on her hair.  And I often very much admire her look.

  • Cassie (C.M.W.)

I don’t know. I think she looks like she’s playing dress-up; I can’t reconcile the coat and the dress at all.

  • Anonymous

What happens to all these clothes after the celeb has worn them?

  • Stan

Agreed on the makeup.  The hair is still too much for my taste.

  • Emily

i do like the pink dress with gray shoes…she looks great and is pulling it off.

  • Lisa

I agree, the hair and makeup look wonderful. The rest is…. well, kinda cray-cray.

  • Anonymous

It was cold last night. I’d wear gloves and a jacket too. Great makeup and hair. Love the dress too.

  • Anonymous

jeeze louise. I dressed better when my mom let me dress myself when I was 5

  • Anonymous

Love it. Love her. That is all.

  • Cassie

It’s a Carrie Bradshaw costume, basically. I don’t love it, but in terms of branding, it’s smart. She may have lucked into the role of such an iconically stylish character, but she does seem to be pretty good at replicating it, generally.

Also, I postively ache for that jacket. The gloves are still stupid, though.

  • Anonymous

Adorable jacket, beautiful dress.  But I’m sorry, pairing them is not cute.  It is not fun.  It’s just offending my eye that she’s treating the dress that way.  Now I would give that Oscar de la Renta dress the love and respect it deserves.

  • R. L.

Ues!  I love it when SJP does it up right.

  • Anonymous

I kinda think she looks like a bag lady who got lucky dumpster diving…

  • Call me Bee

Really an adorable outfit that only SJP can pull off.  But geez lueez I wish she’d stop lining her tiny eyes in black.  It makes them look even teenier.  But her hair looks the best it has in months.  And I WANT her shoes.

  • Anonymous

I want to like it more than I actually do.  I hate the gloves, the bag is wrong, and the black eyeliner is not doing her any favors.

  • Elias Pineda

    hellen mirren did it first

  • Anonymous

Sorry, guys, but this minion must disagree. I think she looks awful. That getup is ridiculous, she looks like a little girl playing in mommy’s closet. C’mon SJP, you’re old enough to be a grandmother, you know better. I’m usually against dismissing clothes as “too young” but in this case, this look could only be carried by a teenager.

  • Alloy Jane

O U T ! ! !  1) Way to ruin that dress.  2) Way to ruin that jacket.  But yes, nice hair & make-up.  Shoes?  Meh.

  • victoria rodeno

Whats with the gloves? She looks nasty.

  • butter nut

so are gloves going to be a thing now?  madonna, lagerfeld, and now sjp?

  • Anonymous

Ok, so yesterday, Leighton Meester and her Oscar de La Renta gown/weird ass jacket combo, I was going to comment that it was so Carrie Bradshaw. I refrained because I thought it was so bloody obvious. I now smugly rest my case.

p.s. Do we have a fashion face-off on our hands?

    • Anonymous

Thank you. That’s what I thought too!

  • Anne Rinaldi

I kinda wish she’d worn some scuffed biker boots and opened the jacket a little.

  • Anonymous

Looks like Madge sent her the memo about gloves LMAO.

  • Anonymous

The purse is a misstep and the gloves should be fitted, but overall I’m digging this.

  • Fatima Siddique

I wonder if Oscar wanted to kill her a little bit for putting that biker jacket over his gown. I know I would.

  • Anonymous

Love everything but the white gloves. Also, I think you boys were right about the pointy shoe making a comeback. Not sure how I feel about that.

  • Anonymous

I get the concept but I don’t think it works. I think she looks atrocious.

    • Jane Dough

      Me too.

      • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

        Me Three.

  • Anonymous

luv huh. she can do no wrong in my book.

  • Anonymous

The title of this post says it all about why I love SJP – Oscar de la Renta AND Theory – she doesn’t dress head to toe in one designer and call it good.  Runway shows are for picking out pieces, not entire looks!!

  • Anonymous

agreed – LM looked like Carrie in the last season when she wore nothing but humongous couture gowns.

  • Aisling O’Connor

What’s going on with the day shoulder bag? The oddness knows no bounds.

  • Anonymous

It’s ok, i was convinced it was one of those over sized Halston dresses when I first saw it.

  • Anonymous

She’s covering the best part of the dress… weird. But she doesn’t look bad, so I can’t complain too much

  • Danielle

Holy cow, a woman is wearing a jacket in February in New York?  The heck you say.

  • Judy S

If this were in or out… I would say out. I liked the Gossip Girl jacket better, which is not saying much.

  • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Oh yea, she just did that to an Oscar de la Renta. This woman really thinks she is Carrie Bradshaw.

  • Anonymous

I’m not sure if I like it, but there’s definitely a certain charm to the look. Her hair does look fantastic, but she has got to stop it with the black eyeliner on the lower lash line. It just doesn’t suit her.

  • Anonymous

I was just about to say, “…and THAT’s how you rock ODLR with a jacket, Leighton!” Love her :)

  • Anonymous

Please. She looks like she is on her way to becoming a crazy cat lady. A rich one, to be sure, but loopy just the same.

  • Anonymous

I recently saw a fantastic OdlR opera coat online – full length, silk taffeta, with a voluminous hood in a crazy spring green. Something like that would have brought the drama appropriately. I think this pairing is just trying to be edgy for edgy’s sake – ho hum.

  • Anonymous

she spoiled the dress. and looks stupid in the process.

  • Anonymous

Looks to me the makeup was applied with a trowel, but what do I know?

  • Anonymous

Do you think she was humming “My Boyfriend’s Back” all night?  Because this is totally prom queen dating the bad boy walk of shame.  And I love it.

  • Anonymous

Too old for princess in motorcycle jacket. The white gloves confuse. Bad bad bad.

  • Sarah Winningham

    Team Blair.

  • Sophie Collier

No.  Just, no. Nothing about this look works.  And is there even anything in that purse or is she just carrying around an empty bag?  Looks mighty flat.

  • Anonymous

I dunno, I love the dress but not on SJP.  It’s too much.

  • vmcdanie

I don’t understand the gloves. Maybe if they weren’t so baggy on her.

  • Anonymous

BUT Leighton Meester wore hers for a television episode. SJP actually chose to wear this shit. I’ve seen her look worse, though. I agree there’s quite an improvement in hair and makeup.

  • Michael Owens

    Two-thumbs up. Fun killer look.
