Rihanna Sends a Message

Posted on February 29, 2012

It’s kind of refreshing that all our celebrity fashion today is off the red carpet, isn’t it? Not a gown or a couple mil worth of borrowed diamonds in sight. We do so love the drag revue known as the Oscars, but we find ourselves craving some street clothes to look at once awards season ends.

To that end, we ask that Miss Rihanna kindly step forward for judging.

Prediction: Now that she’s dead, Liz is going to become the patron saint of bad girl celebrities, just you watch. And we can’t help thinking she would have LOVED that. She’ll be the iconic face that says “Fuck the Haters” as opposed to fellow icon Marilyn, whose image tends to send the message “Please love me.”

Also, we’re seriously jealous of anyone who can wear those shades. Love the shoes, too. Hate the necklace.

  • Funny you should mention Liz being the patron saint of bad girl celebrities since it’s rumoured Lindsay Lohan wants to star in a biopic about her.

    • Oh no, she IS. It’s a Lifetime movie.

      • dress_up_doll

        She is sooooo unworthy.

      • Gayer_Than_Thou

“Liz Taylor” and “Lifetime movie” should never be mentioned together.  That’s the first problem.

        • ShivaDiva

Knowing Lifetime the TV movie will focus exclusively on some obscure case in 1983 when some stalker kept casing her mansion or something.

  • Christine Marie

I’m all for Liz as an icon, but in regards to the actual outfit, what the fuhhhh happened here?

    • Allison Woods

Uhhh, YEAH,,,,, nice idea, but major potato sackage.

  • Paigealicious

    Seriously hating the hair.

  • Laurie Bergman

Now *there* is a true cat-eyed pair of sunglasses!

  • Gayer_Than_Thou

That’s a whole lotta look.  The skirt is the part I like least — I think this would be more fabulous with pants, or maybe black pedal pushers (with different shoes, obviously).

    • But then she’d be viewed as “normal” and we just can’t have that.

      • Little_Olive

      • bitchybitchybitchy

You got that right-“normal” and Rihanna cannot be in the same sentence or dimension.

  •  I get that she’s trying to ‘dress up’ the sweatshirt but I don’t like the necklace or the skirt. I think this would look way better with some black skinny jeans. However, I am 100% behind her saying fuck the haters. And those sunglasses.

  • DeborahLipp

I am ready to buy those sunglasses RIGHT NOW.

  • I guess she chose the necklace to coordinate with Liz as Cleopatra?

  • Don’t care for the sweatshirt with skirt combo.  Would have seemed more fun with a pair of jeans maybe.

  • I am not jealous of anything she has on. She looks ridiculous.

  • Judy_J

Gotta admit, I love those sunglasses.

  • the skirt by itself is to die, though. Love the slit at the back.

  • tired_mommy

    Hate the shades.

  • yulaffin

I took one look at those glasses and thought “Batgirl!”

  • This looks to me precisely like a great street look, i.e. not a celebrity’s look at all. If I saw her, I wouldn’t say, “who IS she?” but “How great to see a beautiful woman wearing crazy clothes like that.”

  • SpcilK

    That B*%$# KRAZY!!!!!

  • Jasmine Moten

I like all of the pieces, minus the skirt. But not together.

  • Mariah J

Ehh…I think the sweatshirt looks frumpy and odd and the glasses are pure alien. Not working for me.

  • Emanuel Iuhas

    She’s so hypocrate!

  • Something seems clumsy about that skirt. Maybe the length is off? Or is it just the Wack camera angles?

  • sleepycat

NEED that sweater and I am upset they don’t have a men’s version (or a much bigger women’s)

  • twocee

The only thing that comes to mind when looking at those sunglasses is the old black cat clock with the eyes that moved back and forth.  I’m blanking on the name of that cat.  But the glasses’ silhouette reminds me of that shape.

Felix the Cat?  Was that it?

    • krelnick

      Kit Kat Clock

    • kimmeister

      Yes, it was Felix!

  • BookishBren

I actually hate the shades. I think she looks ridiculous.

  • NasserShaheen

She looks like a bag lady.

  • Stubenville

Message? The sunglasses say “I am from planet Excelon Five”.

  • queeniethebold

Elizabeth Taylor reportedly hated being called “Liz.”

Rhianna looks ridick. And yikes, what is UP with that hair. Yikes.

  • Monabel

    That is one ridiculous skirt.

  • mmgk

I fear she better get used to wearing sunglasses.

    • possibly the funniest comment i’ve ever read…

      • TheOtherChristina

ikr, domestic abuse is so lol

  • Thathoodwink

    Dopey sunglasses, love the shoes.

  • Lilithcat

The skirt, shirt, glasses and jewelry are all utterly ridiculous.  If she weren’t famous, people would laugh and point.

The shoes, on the other hand, are fabulous.

  • SewingSiren

I always thought Elizabeth Taylor’s personal life was more entertaining than any of the movies she ever made. I can name all of the  designers of her various wedding dresses , but I think I only no the names of 2 of her films.

  • butterflysunita

Hate almost every element of this look, but somehow it works for her.  I don’t know why.

  • I want that sweatshirt. WANT IT NOW.

  • Stefanos Mantyla

I do quite hate this outfit, and that necklace is atrocious. It looks like she got dressed in the dark.

  • TheOtherChristina

The shoes are nice. The shades might be cute in the context of the right outfit. This is not that outfit. This outfit needs to be set on fire.

    • AthenaJ

      I’ll supply the matches

      • sagecreek

        I have lighter fluid.

  • alyce1213

Ick.  Elizabeth Taylor is rolling in her grave.
    Nice shoes, though.

  • Pants_are_a_must

No, no, no, no, yes for the shoes.

    Rihanna is a mess.

  • I can’t think of a more fitting tribute than for her to become the patron saint of bad girls everywhere.

    • formerlyAnon

But bad girls with a good heart & an optimistic streak. As my mother used to say “At least she *marries* her men.”

  • Sara__B

Hair – straw. Sunglasses – 60s camp super villainess. Necklace – cheap looking. Sweatshirt – needs jeans. Skirt – fabulous, with different separates. Heels – great with the skirt, but not with everything else. Add it all together and it doesn’t say “street” or “fashion” to me, just “awkward”.

  • kimmeister

I think everything is horrible but the shoes.

  • AthenaJ

Huge printed images look better on funky asymetric t-shirts rather than frumpy massive sweatshirts. A T with a belt to sinch it in would have worked better with the skirt. Though if the sweatshirt must stay, then at least pair it with a pair of skinny jeans or something. Her top half looks like it’s going to Atlantic City to play the slots, and her bottom half is off to a nice dinner somewhere.

  • finnishmaria

I feel like this would have looked better as a more casual look, with jeans or something like that.

    But I love the sweatshirt.

  • nannypoo

    Oh for god’s sake.

  • i would like it better if the sweater was a large instead of an extra large

  • NCDFan

Well, clearly anyone can wear that sweatshirt equally badly.

  • malvernite

    bodacious. love rihanna.

  • schadenfreudelicious

whatever Rihanna, can you please deal with your roots?..Liz would not approve….

  • leave_Blake_alone

The necklace (and the sunglasses too, really) is just too much for this look. The sweatshirt does so much on its own that it didn’t need to be gussied up with such unusual accessories. More standard sunglasses would have been better.

Love the sweatshirt, love the shoes.

  • GTrain

RiRi’s mouth says “F— the haters” but I think “Please love me” is much closer to the truth.

  • Laurie Schafer

    Lovely, feminine shoes!

  • fiestyfashionfem

    God, I’m old.

    • formerlyAnon

I laughed out loud, so many things elicit this thought as I go through the day!

      • kentiesgirl

My consistent “God, I’m old” moment is hearing what they play on the “oldies” station. Whoever came up with the phrase “oldies music” should be slapped. If it played when I was in HS, it will NEVER be oldies, no matter what you say Dick Biondi. 😛

  • julnyes

I would love that sweater with skinny jeans … but the styling here is not working for me.

  • HATE the sunglasses. Love the shoes.

    • Pennymac

Me too. Those shoes are fierce!

  • SapphoPoet

Yeah, this was clearly one of those outfits where you need to look in the mirror before you leave the house and remove one item. And that item should have been the necklace. Otherwise, a surprising, interesting outfit.

    • sagecreek

Oh, I think that item should have been the shirt.

  • formerlyAnon

Rich, fashionable celeb on laundry day?

The shoes are AWESOME.  As far as I can tell, an excellent skirt, as well.

    *DANGER* Will Robinson *DANGER AHEAD*

ONLY because the sweatshirt features Liz, looks brand spanking new, and is on a gorgeous woman is she not damned as “college girl running out of clothes” and a possible candidate for “What Not To Wear.”

Necklace looks cheap & tacky – really tacky over the sweatshirt. Hope it *was* cheap. (Ha.)

Whew! We’re back to relative safety. The glasses are a strong look, not for everybody, but they work great on her.

I’m thinking the shoes and the bald friend/minder/jacket carrier behind her are the takeaways, here.

  • She’s a cipher, there’s nothing there. More often than not, her outfits are horrible and her hair is consistently bad except for her original short cut. To borrow a turn of phrase from Sanda Bernhard:  Elizabeth Taylor and other “bad girl” female stars like Ava Gardner, Marilyn, Rita Hayworth and others CREATED the road. There was no road before those women. They did things that would break these little bitches in half.

  • unbornfawn

Too much money. Not enough taste.

  • RroseSelavy

Love the sweatshirt, love the shoes, hate the hair, hate the necklace, hate the celebrity.

  • Saoirse Lee

Can I be a graphic design nerd and point out that, at least from these pictures, that doesn’t appear to be a pixelated image of Elizabeth Taylor, but a halftone screen. *pushes glasses up nose with pencil*

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

The shades look like wee kitty cat ears.

    • kentiesgirl

They DO; and I’m super jealous of them….I had about twenty pairs of (cheap-think Claires) sunglasses in the younger years going for that look and never quite getting it right. I think they look great with the bangs, but better with a ponytail as well.

  • boweryboy

It’s a fun look – largely in part to the awesome sweatshirt.  I hate the sunglasses and the necklace.

If she put on a different pair of sunglasses, pulled her hair back in a ponytail and replaced the shoes (although I do think they’re fierce) with a pair of black lowtop Chucks or white 14 eye Docs (as cliched as that may be) she would rock a cute young urban girl look.

Then later in the day she pops on those fierce heels, lets down her hair, replaces the sweatshirt with a black Swarwoski studded bustier and cream colored cropped leather jacket she could go from day to night in an instant.

  • ccm800

I hate that these women ESP musicians – cant go to the damn convenience store without a stylist. how do you ever connect with an audience when nothing about you is authentic?

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Have you seen how vicious people get when somebody famous runs a quick errand in sweats, a ballcap, and no makeup?

      • ccm800

Yessum. But Joan Jett wouldn’t give one rat’s ass what SOME people thought or said. 🙂

        • holdmewhileimnaked

but she does. cos everyone who’s ever known her knows what everyone else thinks is true is true &, even at this late date, she wont say. which is weird.

      • ccm800

Yessum. But Joan Jett wouldn’t give one rat’s ass what SOME people thought or said. 🙂

  • enchanted216

I love it….so 80’s;) And I love the shoes, too. Hate the necklace….LOL!

  • I kind of hate everything she’s wearing except the shoes. And her hair is tragic.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I love the top, but I don’t like it with the skirt at all. Better with leggings or black jeans or something.

  • This is genius, I love the way the Liz Top looks so flat like a billboard

  • patticake1601

    oh those shoes….swooooon

  • quiltrx

I’ll take the sweatshirt, please.  It’s huge on her, so it just might be my size.

  • Cute shirt, but I could do without everything else in the picture, celebrity included. I think she has pushed domestic violence issues back thirty years in the past two weeks. Just my two cents.

  • Are we just not gonna talk about fit and proportion with that sweatshirt?  MESS.  she looks like a buffoon…GURL.

    • Well… no. It’s a sweatshirt.

      • kentiesgirl

HA! Spit out a bit of coffee on that one 🙂

  • RzYoung

Aw, I’m so glad the dude got the autograph. I don’t like anything she’s wearing, soz.

  • Call me Bee

Love the shirt–hate the skirt, necklace and ugly sunglasses.  They are just silly.

  • Mary Stansbury

Aside from the clothes, look at the autograph hound in the first couple of pictures. He has the pen in his mouth to uncap it and then hands it over to Rhianna. Ewwwww! Instead of free clothes from designers, celebrities should ask for free bottles of Purell.

  • The sunglasses have an appropriate name, and they are something I’d want to have seen Julie Newmar wearing.

  • MilaXX

I would kill for those sunglasses. I like a lot of Rhi Rhi’s street style and I like this look.

  • TheOriginalLulu

LOVE the shades. The necklace has kind of a Flava Flav vibe to it, and I just can’t get behind that.
The sweatshirt is kind of awesome. Because Liz was all kinds of awesome. *sniff*

  • BazoDee

    OH those shoes!! Drool!

  • Love the shoes. SO pretty. So not platforms.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Although part of me finds that sweatshirt uber-tacky, somehow it’s working in this look…or am I just having a bad style day?

  • glennethph

I want her to go away. She got beaten up by Chris Brown and now, they’re together again. If she gets hurt or worse, dies, then it’s all on her now. I’m done with her.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I love the sweater and the shoes, but HATE the sunglasses.  Different strokes, I guess…  🙂

  • Must have those SHADES!!!!

  • Hate on Arrival!!

  • Lisa

I WANT THAT SWEATSHIRT!!!  AND I WANT IT NOOOOWWWW!!!!  (Yes, I *am* willing to have a tantrum of Veruca Salt-level proportions over this).

  • BrightsideSusan

    Oh!  The shoes.

  • bitterk

I am thrilled she ditched the cartoonish red hair.  She earned a pass for at least a year.

  • samo_samo

Love, love, love the shoes! The skirt could have a wonderful life with a different top, but with the baggy sweatshirt not so much.
