Rachel McAdams in Andrew Gn

Posted on February 02, 2012

We realize she’s only running 15 feet from her limo to a front door…

Rachel McAdams makes an appearance on “Good Morning America” in NY in an Andrew Gn dress.

But come on, honey. It’s New York in February. Global warming or not, that just strikes as tonally wrong for the time and place. But hey, your First Holy Communion dress still fits you!

Andrew Gn Spring 2012 Collection/Model: Vanessa Hegelmaier (IMG)

It’s a cute dress, but it’s maybe just a skosh too precious on her. And we don’t think the proportions are her best friend. That skirt’s too short and both the skirt and sleeves are too puffy for her. When the mood strikes us and we start making recommendations to improve an outfit, we’ve been known to haul out the black pumps when we think a dress needs something simple, but these patent black pumps with a slightly pointy toe are all wrong for this dress, we think. They kinda make the whole thing look a little … trashy, no? Little “walk of shame” action going on there? We tend to think this dress calls for sandals, but then we’d wind up yelling about that whole “New York in February” thing.

  • Such a pretty girl. Such an ugly dress. And shoes. And it’s February. And what you guys said. ugh.

    • Anonymous

Yes. An can we add, such bad hair? Too light, too dark roots, kind of overworked and dead in the front.

The head nun in the school would have told her she has more potential than that.

      • Anonymous

        LOL – well said!

  • Is the one on the model a light violet color, or is that just the photo? Because that, with the right shoes, in the right season, would work for her. Okay, I’ve described a whole different outfit. This fashion thing is hard.

  • Anonymous

That could work for a short bridal dress, but that’s pretty much it.  It it’s still a stupid dress.  It looks stupid on Rachel and on the model as well.  Perhaps a tween could pull it off, I can’t imagine any other grown up being able to wear it well

    • I don’t know if a tween could even pull it off. It looks like it fits weird and the waist and sleeves look odd. (But watch, Hailee Steinfeld or Ariel Winter will show up in this one day to prove us wrong. Ok, now I kind of want Ariel to wear it because it might actually look cute on her.)

  • Anonymous

judging by her expression when posing for the cameras, I’d say too precious is exactly what she’s going for. The only pic where she looks good is the one where she’s looking off to the left–and there she looks beautiful.

  • Anonymous

agreed, TLo. She looks awful and uncomfortable – like someone needs to massage something out of her shoulders. Maybe the hypothermia is a contributing factor.

    • MilaXX

To be fair it was over 60 yesterday so I doubt she was cold, just out of season.

      • And she’s Canadian. It probably felt like summer to her!

      • Over 60 is freezing for us California people. Besides, look at the dog walker in the background.

  • Anonymous

You all are crazy! Girl looks great.

    • Anonymous

      Thank you!

  • i miss her brown hair.  sadface.

  • Sobaika Mirza

She looks adorable, if inappropriate for the season. I don’t know her exact age, but she still looks youthful/cute/etc. enough to pull it off.

  • Anonymous

her hair and makeup are cute, but the proportions of the dress are all wrong on her, its hitting her at the widest part of the thigh and that in combination with the thickness of the hem area looks bulky and unflattering, if these were separates i could see them working with different pieces, as a dress it’s fussy and awkward looking…..

  • Anonymous

She admitted on Kelly show that the dress was too short for sitting.

    • Anonymous

That was good of her.  But as the photos clearly show, it’s also too short for walking.  Total gyno skirt.  And TLo are right: The black patent leather needletoe pumps add the final hookerish fillip.

      Just awful!

  • Anonymous

Also, that person in the background walking their dog all bundled up makes it worse.  She looks good in the face but that dress looks like a doilly.

    •  Good point about the dog walker in the back! Made me laugh.

I didn’t really *see* the shoes until TLo mentioned them and said “walk of shame,” and now that’s all I can see– how wrong those shoes are with that dress. And how wrong the dress is.

  • Anonymous

I kind of want to turn the dress into a shirt and put it with jeans.

    • Anonymous

      That would be so cute!

My favorite all-white blouse ever was fussy with pleats and lacy embroidery. It looked great with jeans.

  • That’s a dress length made for walking and being photographed, so I hope she isn’t planning on sitting down while on that talkshow.

  • It doesn’t actually “still” fit. Her bust has developed since First Communion days (besides her legs having gotten longer, as noted).

I am here in Florida clinging to my wools as the azaleas start popping.

  • MilaXX

The dress is too twee for her, the skirt needs at least another inch, the black shoes don’t go with the dress because it’s out of season and would look better with a sandal.

  • Anonymous

I want to grab the hem and give a sharp tug down.  Then,

  • I kinda like her in “precious”, because to me, she is just adorable. I don’t love the sleeves-if they were just normal sleeves it would have been much better, or the shoes, but from the neck up she looks fresh and beautiful.  Which is more than we can say for most of the rest of the women in Hollywood these days.

  • Sorry Rachel, its not June, and its not LA.  And those black pumps are a fail regardless.

  • Anonymous

She doesn’t seem to be exactly “running” 15 feet. In the first picture she has stopped because she has to pee. She’s looking a little sheepish in the second picture. And in the third picture we can see the puddle in the street. Her relief is evident as she attempts to nonchalantly stroll away and pretend someone else did it. But we all know.

    • Anonymous

      nannypoo, that was hilarious.

    • O my goodness nannypoo you are SO RIGHT! Funniest thing I’ve read all year, esp. since I scrolled back through the photos and it’s all right there!

  • Anonymous

It’s about two sizes too small. And too short too. Otherwise very pretty.

  • That is just not her dress.  Too small, proportions are off.

  • Anonymous

This whole look would be ugly and overwrought even in August. I feel pretty confident saying this, since I don’t like it on the model, indoors, with tan legs and white shoes either. But it’s far worse on Rachel and in this whole seasonal context. Ugh!

  • Anonymous

Those sleeves are awful.  And I know her film is “The Vow” but that’s taking the bridal theme too literally.

  • Anonymous

What you said, plus it doesn’t fit her right across the bust.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, I defended JLo’s bare legs yesterday, but at least JLo was wearing a coat! This is ridiculous.
In addition, I think this could also have been a Girl That’s Not Your Dress post. That is definitely a younger girl’s dress. Rachel, you’re not old enough to start trying to look younger.

  • Anonymous

Bad fit.  Too short.  Ugly dress.  Wrong season.

Nothing good to see here.  Move it along!

  • Wrong season. Wrong color on her. Wrong hemline. Wrong.

    • Anonymous

Check, check, and check.  Plus wrong shoes.  And (same old, same old) wrong hair color for Miss Rachel.

  • Joanna Schuth

I’d just add three inches to the skirt, de-puff the sleeves, and give her hot pink pumps.

    • Anonymous

      Is that all? 😉

  • Celebreties take note, until it is actually spring stay the hell away from the SPRING collections. Winter has it’s own collections for a reason. Go pick out a cute skirt and a killer Sonya Rykel sweater and call it a day. Sheesh

  • Anonymous

    What a shame….

  • Brad and Anne White

I think she looks cute, minus the whole ill-fitting top. But it’s been in the 60’s and 70’s here all week, and I can’t wrap my head around the fact that it’s February!! So for my neck of the woods, she’s dressing appropriately. 😉

  • Rand Ortega

She’s about 2-3 months too early w/ this look. Come back in April or May & give us a twirl, honey.

  • Anonymous

Aww, I like Rachel, so pretty. Dress, so precious.

Someone please tell me how to pronounce Gn. ing? gin? gun?

    • Anonymous

I believe you just say the two letters, Gee Enn.  I saw a video on the Sartorialist of a woman who worked for him, and when she said his name I took note, ’cause I’ve wondered too.

      • Anonymous

Perhaps you’re right, but that seems so odd.

        • Anonymous

I don’t in the least disagree.  My ears pricked up like a schnauzer’s when I heard it.

  • Pennymac

Her makeup and hair are pretty, but everything else is just NO.

  • Anonymous

Don’t like the puffy sleeves but otherwise, I think she looks great. Don’t see anything wrong with dressing for the weather instead of what the weather is supposed to be either. If this were a super springy (or summery … or autumny) dress, then I’d understand the complaint. But I feel like this dress could work in most seasons, including winter, so I’m not bothered by it or the fact that she’s not wearing a coat.

  • Anonymous

Minority view: I think she looks fantastic, except for the shoes. They always fuck up the shoes, don’t they?

Also, as others have pointed out, it’s been freakishly warm lately, so I can’t ding her for not bundling up.

  • Anonymous

Too fussy for day, too short to be formal, too fancy to be sporty – this is one of those dresses that one buys on sale, then for the next three years pulls out of the closet, examines, sighs, and puts back in the closet until finally donating it to charity.

  • This dress belongs on a girl with sticks for legs, and Rachel has beautiful shapely legs.  I agree, the proportions just aren’t right.

    • Anonymous

Terrible. This is a dress for a 20 year old bride with–you nailed it–stick legs and no curves. Add one of those poofy little short veils, a bouquet of freshly-cut daffodils, and you’re good to go.

  • Anonymous

I think she looks great (winter season ignored unless in Florida) except for the shoes.  Do not like the black pumps but I’m not sure what sandals I would wear.

  • Anonymous

It’s too white. If it was a winter white instead of a white-out white it would be better.

  • Anonymous

As you say… Walk of Shame… I feel like she should be holding her shoes in her hands and one of the heels should be broken off… dress is interesting if it was about 3 inches longer though… Aniston’s future wedding dress perhaps?

  • Anonymous

“But hey, your First Holy Communion dress still fits you!”

LOL. Btw, how do you pronounce “Gn”?

  • iCouture

Folks, I think we have to agree here, being a celebrity allows you to have a totally different wardrobe than normal people.  She is in a warm SUV, and getting out, and walking inside a warm building.  Why would she need to hassle with a coat??  She is also getting photographed, so why have a coat atop a dress your trying to show off?   I still don’t think people get celebrities.
That being said, the proportions seem off here, and i don’t like how the skirt balloons her hips.

  • I saw the first few minutes of her segment, and I laughed and thought of T Lo because she mentioned her dress was too short and she was pulling it down as she was sitting.

  • She’s so gorgeous.  The dress is too short for her and a coat would have been in order.

She doesn’t disagree with you T Lo.  Even she thinks it’s too short.

  • Anonymous

I think she’s adorable. Didn’t even notice the shoes on the first run-through.

  • Anonymous

I dislike the proportions of this dress.  A longer skirt would created some balance harmony.

HATE the shoes.  I feel bunions growing at the mere sight of them.  And, since I’m at it, I detest blonde her.

    Crabbing done.  Back to work.

    • Anonymous

I agree about the proportions: they’re strange on the model too.  I love bell skirts but when the skirt of a dress is shorter than the torso it always makes me squint with a confused expression on my face until I get a migraine.

  • Anonymous

Ha!  First communion dress reference sends me right back to being 7 years old and my mother hemming the dress to ensure that when I was kneeling, it would hit the floor.  That was the rule.

    • Anonymous

This.  Plus, I wonder where this dress hit her as she was sitting down, being interviewed.

  • Its a pretty dress and I applaud her for not being orange, but it doesn’t fit!

  • Well, except for the fit over the chest and the toe cleavage, I have to say, I like it. Love her hair.

  • No. Silly dress on a grown woman.  And I also don’t understand why stylists put women in dresses that hit them directly across the widest part of their thighs.  Rachel doesn’t have big thighs, but it isn’t a flattering length for her, and/or, it just looks very awkward and boxy with the odd scrunched top.  There are some lengths that really only look good on models — keeping in mind that we want to be accepting of everyone’s body shape, to look your best I think you have to be realistic about your body, including the muscle definition and shape of your legs. Rachel should have asked herself, do I really look good in a micro mini?  Or is that only for Heidi (albeit 5 years ago …)>    Or would my legs look killer if the hem were a few inches longer?  Just because a look or length is in, doesn’t mean it works for everyone.

    OK.  Off soapbox.

  • Laurie Bergman

She barely got that damask and lace tablecloth to cover the Good China!

  • your First Holy Communion dress still fits you!

    I totally LOL’d.

  • Was it yesterday? It was over 60 yesterday. I think a lot of people only kep their jackets on because it was easier thanb carrying them (at least I did).

  • Anonymous

Agree with your issues with this on her, T Lo. I don’t like the puffy sleeves hitting at the same length as the waist detail. Too much business around the midsection. And the bodice doesn’t seem to fit her right.

  • If this is a First Holy Communion dress, there’s an old nun someplace with her chopped off hair on fire.  This is not a girl on the street look in the first place.  It’s a girl going to an important meeting look, who happened to get photographed on her way into the building.

  • the dress is adorable, I LOVE IT. She looked adorable on the show too, Daniel Radcliffe and Kelly Ripa were fawning all over the dress.

  • Alloy Jane

Jesus woman, you are rich!  Get your fucking roots done.

  • Sarah Thomas

I’d wear a high heeled boot in oxblood or tobacco leather. And a Burberry trench. And then you’d all love me.

  • Anonymous

Something nice. . .something nice.  I like her silver clutch!

  • Anonymous

It doesn’t look like it fits. The top is pulling and/or bunching in weird ways.

  • Anonymous

Wow, that “dress” is gynecologically short on the model.

  • Not working.  Skirt too short and shoes are wrong for sure.

  • Anonymous

Make it sleeveless, add an inch or two to the hem plus some kicky sandals, dye her hair brown and wait until June and: Presto! Great look.

  • I love the woman walking her dog in the background of the last picture… Honey, put a coat on.

  • Anonymous

I get it. She’s going out dancing. And it’s 1983. Perfect.

  • Anonymous

I just hate her hair, I can’t get past that.

  • Anonymous

Ack! This is making my teeth hurt. It’s sickeningly twee and the proportions are very, very bad. The shoes. No.

  • It’s been around the mid-fifties all week in NYC.

  • butter nut

i actually like this better on her than that dress from the other day.  that said, i feel like it needs to be yanked down about 4 inches.

  • kimberlini

I’m glad the ability to sit (or lack thereof) was addressed.  And a silver clutch isn’t my bag of choice for 8 am unless I’m just arriving home.

  • Anonymous

She is too interesting for this dress and that hair. There are a gazillion blonde meh actresses in Hollywood but not nearly enough smart, pretty brunettes. Rachel Adams needs to fulfill her destiny. I hate that dress, yes, hate. Grrr.

  • Judy_J

This dress looks like something I would have worn to a semi-formal back in 1969 when I was 15. And I do so wish she’d go back to her natural brunette hair color. Blonde does nothing for her.

  • Anonymous

The bust point on that dress is about 2 inches higher than her bust point. I think it’s a candidate for “Girl, that is not your dress” more than “Girl on the street”

  • Nicole Chubb

Only you guys would point out how a dress can look First Holy Communion/Walk of Shame at the same time. Genius.

  • I think it would have worked if it only FIT her! so annoying all the bunching up top, which is making the skirt even shorter

  • Gunne Sax

  • I don’t know, maybe it’s my non-sexual crush on her but I think she looks gorgeous. And it was really warm yesterday in Philly as well-but not enough for short short and no coat.

  • Anonymous

    This dress belongs on Olsen.

  • What day was this taken though?  Cuz the temperature has been pretty spring-like every two or three days….

  • Anonymous

Agreed – a dress for a kid, not an adult.  When do they wear the designer winter clothes?  In the summer?

  • Anonymous

I really wish she’d go back to a soft brunette or, at the very least, tone down the blonde.  McAdams has such lovely features and, with the hair so light, they lose something.  Same goes for Clare Danes…

  • I love it.

  • Anonymous

    It’s too damn short.

  • Anonymous

why do these women keep wearing dresses too short to sit in?  did her publicist not inform her she was going to the Kelly & Whoever show and that they always do the interviews in tall director chairs so that your who-haw is eye level with the camera?  she looked uncomfortable thru the entire interview and was annoying.  please make it stop.  the best part was Dan Radcliffe being so bubbly talking about stage & screen.

  • Cute dress, but the fit is bad.  I’d do an intervention on the hair too.

  • Anonymous

Hate the dress, but girlfriend’s hair, makeup, and legs are fabulous.

  • R. L.

Yeah, hair and makeup are fab.  I’m not feeling the dress.

  • Anonymous

I like the juxtaposition in that last picture of the light and airy white dress in the foreground with the sweatshirt/sweatpants in the background.

That said, I think of the puffyness as a winter thing.  If this was longer, it’d be perfect.  Besides, it hasn’t been that cold yet this winter, and I’m further north than you.

  • Anonymous

Oh man, you just found something worse than a look going “bridal.” Going “first Communion.”

  • Totes inappropes

  • It’s for a TV appearance on a morning show. The mood is light and positive. She is promoting a movie called “the vow.” She looks perfect!!

  • Anonymous

Starlets, just because you CAN wear a mini doesn’t mean you SHOULD. This skirt length is so unflattering on Rachel, even giving the illusion of thick thighs (I’m sure that woman doesn’t have an ounce of bodyfat). The last thing you want is your dress sabotaging all those faithful hours in the gym.

Also, as a viewer, I am really tired of women on talk shows wearing gyno skirts that they spend the whole interview tugging down. They’re obviously uncomfortable, and oddly, so is the audience.

  • The fabric of the dress doesn’t work well with its shape. A softer fabric wouldn’t have gotten so rumply looking above the waist. The only way you can make that dress look nice is if you stand around like a mannequin the whole time you have it on. Oh, wait….

  • Your first communion dress still fits, but it doesn’t fit well.  What’s up with all the bunching around the boobages?

  • Anonymous

    Oh, God, it’s Simplicity #8453.

  • Anonymous

Horrible fit!  Wrong for NYC in Feb!

  • vmcdanie

Too short, too padded, too twee. Pretty girl though.

  • High heeled mj’s would make it awesomely pervy trashy.

  • Anonymous

Love the person in the parka in the background. A cue that she is waaaay underdressed, and that dress was not made for her. Pretty face and hair, thumbs down to everything else.

  • Tatiana Luján

If it were a different color and she had wore i with tights, it would have been better.
