No loud snaps or neck rolls here.
Just a congratulations and a “Brava” on a job well done. She looks spectacular.

My vote for Best Dressed. Beautiful.
I love her. Didn’t care for the Help at all, but I was thrilled for her when she won.
Same here. Overrated movie, but I adore her.
I did see The Help, and I was actually pulling for Jessica Chastain. This was Olivia’s award season.
Yes, yes and yes! This dress is right everywhere. The sleeve is capped perfectly, the waist amazing and the train is divine. Love it.
Deceptively simple, no? Yet there are key details that make it so beautiful.
Also, the house of Shoji may have just found a new audience in the real people’s market ;).
They’d be fools to drop the ball after dressing Ms. Spencer so beautifully.
You’re right, it does seem deceptively simple. All the details work together and it looks fantastic on her. Would have loved some color on her lips and/or the earrings and bag.
They already do make “regular people” stuff. It’s not like, you can buy it at Target regular, but I own one of his dresses that I bought from Bluefly and it didn’t break my bank or anything. He really does do great with designing for regular lady bodies.
Tadashi is all over Loehmann’s.
I’ve bought a few of their items on ideeli. Totally reasonable on price (not GOOD but within reason given my budget).
And, like Ms. Spencer, I am plus-sized so finding a decent evening dress is damn difficult. Tadashi Shoji is totally dependable for this.
Perfection. She looks lovely.
her eye makeup and hair were stunning! The dress is a lil colorless but the beading is gorge.
I think women of color are where these “colorless” gowns work best because they contrast against their skin. I don’t think this dress would look nearly so nice on a woman with white/pale skin.
YES. If you have a rich, deep skintone, you can support the look of a pale gown. If you are a pale slip of cream yourself, you need some color in your dress to do the work for you.
I’m white (my complexion matches undercooked chicken perfectly) and I can’t wear beige, yellow or cream. I’m always happy to see people with different complexions rocking the shit out of something beautiful that I can’t wear.
She looked stunning. She is proof that you can look amazing no matter what your size is!
Classic elegance. She looks great. Love the hair.
Just stunning–that is so her dress. She looks gorgeous.. And congratulations to her!
I loved listing to the “E” girls try to talk around it. Yes, she is not a size 2, she is not a size 10 either (and neither am I, for that matter)
BUT SHE LOOKS GREAT! Way to go, honey!
She does look fabulous, and that is a very figure-flattering gown for her, but I don’t think you would admit it if she didn’t. You never insult the fat girls.
Not true. I don’t think there’s ever been a hesitation on the part of TLo or any commenters to lament a dress that doesn’t flatter a larger woman’s figure.
Have you seen their comments on Melissa McCarthy?
This dress is everything that Melissa’s was not. Miss McCarthy needs to recognize this and have a long talk with Octavia’s stylist.
Better yet, she needs to hire Octavia’s stylist. 😀
I think that’s often true. But not always (and of course, not in this case). With a darker lipstick this would be the best look of the night.
Oh yeah, I would love to see Octavia in a bold lipcolor.
The thing is, she looks gorgeous here so I’m not sure why you’re trying to bring the drama about something not even happening.
And I’m sure there will be plenty said about Melissa McCarthy’s look
That’s ridiculous. TLo don’t like bashing a woman for her figure, but whenever a woman of any size wears a gown that is wrong for her shape they’ll point it out. There’s plenty of evidence of that in the archives.
TLo never insult anyone, in my opinion; they’re just honest about when something doesn’t work on someone.
It’s great that she found the right designer to help her look so wonderful on so many red carpets.
Best she’s looked all awards season!
My favorite of the night. WERQ! Perfect. Period.
Very elegant. Love the earrings.
Best dressed. The end.
Best dress of the night.
Where is her lipstick?? But she does look wonderful! She is killing that dress!
She is just gorgeous.
Love the strategic deployment of the cocktail ring. Superb!
So glad to see this as a WERQ!
That dress screams “I came her for my Oscar!”
She looks fabulous in this!
II think I only have seen one photo of her with a smile on her face. I would have given her a WERQ if she had cracked a smile. If you don’t smile on Oscar day, when do you smile?
She seemed to be smiling all the damn time. Maybe the still photos didn’t capture it? And she was just totally overwhelmed and adorable at her win.
She seemed to be working very hard to hold it together. Pretty emotional night for her. (It’s a long, long way from Montgomery, AL to the Oscars.
Please look at her whole face. She’s smiling in every picture. She smiles wirh her mouth closed. Why must she show her teeth? She smiles; she does not grin!
Perfect. Every detail is perfect.
This is how a woman with curves should dress. Christina Hendricks take note, Love.
Best look of the night. Stunning!
She looks totally gorgeous — and I love the draping detail around the booty. She should give the name of her stylist to Melissa McCarthy…..
Absolutely stunning. The beading followed the draping, her hair and make up are spot on!
I wish her face looked happier, but regardless, Octavia is my new idol.
Was just noticing that. Most shots I’ve seen she seems bored or uncomfortable. I’m sure the red carpet isn’t as fun and glamorous as we might imagine, though.
She looks so beautiful. Total WERQ.
She needs to lend her stylist to Melissa McCarthy.
And her makeup is too simple, yet again. Much better than before, but still on the plain side. A winged eyeliner and a pinker lipgloss would have been nice. But everything else is WOW.
She looks great! Her speech made me love her even more.
She looks fab!
Mondo is on the local LA ABC affiliate after-Oscar show doing commentary. He thought Cameron Diaz’s dress was meh and her hair was terrible. Melissa McMarthy’s has too much going on. He’s nervous but doing well. The anchors aren’t used to honesty; they love everything on everybody.
Gorgeous. Now I need some Tadashi Shoji hand-me-downs.
Stunning. Everything except her makeup is perfect. Her face just seems to blah for the glamor of everything else. Just a bit of color on the lips and this would be absolutely perfect.
(Well, and some slightly different eye makeup. That’s mostly just a personal pet peeve, though – I think it looks weird when eyeliner etc. starts at the middle of the eye, not near the inner corner. It makes the eyes look really far apart, pulls them outwards visually, and makes them look strangely shaped. And on someone like Octavia Spencer, whose eyes are large and not close-set, it almost makes her look a bit bug-eyed. Which is a shame ’cause she has beautiful eyes. But I know it’s a style that’s popular at the moment….)
this is some timeless elegance right here.
Not digging the makeup at all but everything else is perfection.
Plus sized ladies who know how to dress…represent!
I read an article that she wears multiple spanx under her clothes for red carpet events, all actresses do, even the skinny ones. At a recent red carpet she was discussing with another actress that the spanx were so uncomfortable. that is why she looks so unhappy. Some spanx are hot & uncomfortable.
A smile is the best accessory.
This is an amazing dress on her. Absolutely WERQing it.
Perfection – this is what Micheal was talking about in the Project Runway Black and White challenge, the color is fantastic on her. The fit is just right, and the beading and jewelry takes it up to gala. Hair and make up are a bit standard for her, but they’re also impeccable and flattering. The bag is a bit boring, although totally appropriate. A little touch of muted color might have been nice.
More of this kind of woman in Hollywood, please – polished and healthy.
How elegant, splendid, graceful and lovely. Brava indeed on the win and the perfect look.
I’ll get booed for this but…due to an unfortunate sleeve length and high neckline, this dress makes your eyes go straight to the widest part of her arms, which is not her best feature. I was disappointed because she had been killin it up until tonight. *shrugs*
Who is her stylist? She BROUGHT IT.
LLOVED this dress. It moved beautifully, too. WERQ
She looked the best she’s ever looked, and won a freaking Oscar. I was so happy for her. Way to go!
Stunning. I want her stylist to write a book.
Wow. Just wow. Beautiful. Agreed: best dressed. Is it awful for me to think she could have gone just a skosh more dramatic with her makeup?
Wow. Attagirl. And please give Melissa McCarthy the number of your stylist posthaste.
Wow! Perfect dress and perfect styling. Very happy for Miss Spencer for her big win and for looking so fabulous!
Girl, that is SO your dress! Well done!
Tadashi done her good and her hair/makeup is great.
See people? This is what a gorgeous dress in the right shape and size can do for you. She looks so tiny compared to some of her not-so-good choices, and curvy and beautiful. Love her. And she was so damn adorable when she won.
The lines of this dress come in at angles and join at a point below the bust line. It’s a great design element when done correctly. OS looks fab!
JLo’s dress also does the same thing with the lines and joining, but the lack of beading and the fabric doesn’t give the same effect. http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2012/02/oscars-jennifer-lopez-in-zuhair-murad.html (V neck plunge also kills the look for JLo.)
So excited for her win tonite! I cried with her…. she has been in a LOT of shows/movies. I think the dress is beautiful but everything else was just meh. No Makeup. Didnt love the hairstyle and she need a fresh relaxer….it’s freakin Oscar nite!
Look of the night, as far as I’m concerned. I covet that dress.
The lines of the beading embrace her shape so well, it’s lovely! What a way to really love the body you have rather than trying to disguise it.
No dissents from the Midwest contingent. She looked GREAT.
She looks so so beautiful and I could not be happier about her win, she was amazing in that movie.
And that is how you do THAT. Tadashi Shoji needs an award and a cuddle for not running away from a bigger lady and showing what a real designer can do.
One of my faves. She looks amazing.
The dress is perfect on her. Next time. I’d like to see some better work on the hair.
But BRAVA indeed, she’s gorgeous.
Octavia, we love you and you look gorgeous, so SMILE! Or, as my father would say as he whacked us kids on the backs of the heads during awkward family photos, “SMILE, DAMMIT!”
Sing it with me! “You’re never fully dressed without a SMIIIIIIIILE!”
She looks miserable in the first three photos.
She’s looked miserable all award season. Poor O. She really wanted the Oscar but not the press to go along with it.
And it goes well with an Oscar.
Lovely dress. Make up is a little flat for me.
Well, she had to wear something to pick up her Guilt Oscar.
She looks gorgeous. Only complaint: she doesn’t seem to have practiced walking up the stairs to the stage in it–I got the impression it was a bit long for that.
I thought the dress was beautiful, the cut was perfect for her…I just wish she’d maybe gone with a colour? There was a LOT of bridal on the carpet last night.
I don’t like the sleeve length, other than that it’s perfect for her.
My complaint is the makeup. She looks washed out.
Beautiful and flattering. She just needs some make-up gays.
Her collaboration with Tadashi Shoji is the best one I’ve seen in a long while, all throughout her Oscar campaign. MULTIPLE WERQ SNAPS. And love.
Spectacular indeed. What a flattering dress on her body.
Shutting it down, yet again. That’s my girl.
The PERFECT dress for her. LOVE LOVE.
She looks gorgeous.
Very, very flattering style, but I would have liked to have seen a color.
Is it just me or does she wear the same style of dress in a different color with more or less rhinestones? Don’t get me wrong, she does look really great, but I think designers can do better when it comes to plus sized women. Don’t even get me started on Melissa McCarthy’s dress…..
That’s a WERQ and a half if I’ve ever seen one. Tadashi Shoji is the Givenchy to her Audrey. Never let him/her go!
very very nice. perfect.
Tadashi Shoji: the curvy woman’s truest friend. He gets what we love, and he nailed it for Octavia. She looked elegant and chic and simply beautiful. Kissies, Tadashi!
Yes! It’s so fabulous to see a designer who knows what to do with a woman who is larger than a size 6! Loved this look on her, loved her acceptance speech, Ms. Octavia has reason to smile for sure now!
he gets all real shaped women with curves. I love his clothes,
She looked great!!!
I love the dress and I loved her acceptance speech. But why does the third picture look like she’s posing for the DMV? I understand not wanting to deal with people, but Octavia, you’re at the Oscars! Smile!
Beautiful and finally a smile in the last photo
She look great!! Very proud of her!! I have been seeing her work for many years and I am glad that she has been recognized.
So proud of my fellow BamaGal. She brought it, she used it and she throwed it down. Good on ya, Octavia!
Love – she looks absolutely beautiful and the gown is cut so perfectly for her shape.
The dress is perfect on her, but oh how I wish there was more color in the makeup and accessories! Also the hair is really not fabulous enough. Such a shame, this coulda been a WERQ if there were more effort put into it. Plus she just doesn’t look happy
Yes, she does.
She looks gorgeous!
Its like the Oscars appropiate version of J-Lo’s gown, she looks fantastic.
I thought the shape and fit was perfection, but I wanted it to be a bold color.
A perfect silhouette. I wish she had a little adventurousness with the color of the accessories (maybe a forest green clutch or something. I hope she can now address the grillage issues that she feels she has so we see more full smiles now that awards season is over.
One of my favorite looks of the night – she looks amazing!! Really like what the dress does to her figure.
Perfect dress to suit her figure as well as a great contrast with her skin tone. Love the earrings and the bag. She knocked it out of the park. her acceptance speech was so moving too. This was HER night!!!
Missing the color….lipstick, at least?
That is just the prettiest, most flattering, most effortless looking dress of the night.
I was so happy to see her in this. She gets the WIN for me. Absolutely love the hair–a nod to the 60s without looking too bee hive-y. (I will be stealing this look the next tim ei go to a formal event for sure!)
Loved loved loved her in this dress. One of the best of the night IMO.
This is absolutely SPECTACULAR. She’ looks incredibly GORGEOUS. One of the best looks of the night–definitely in the top 3 and a contender for #1!
I love this dress, and I love her in the dress. Maybe the dress would be not as spectacular without her in it.
It’s that same “sunburst” design that JLo wore, but this one is tasteful while still being glamorous. Plus it’s also flattering to her figure while JLo’s dress made her look wider than she really is.
Makes me glad she won when she dressed so well.
She never looks happy in photos…smile honey!!
It is indeed lovely but she had to manhandle it to get all that drippiness at the hemline up the steps to the podium. That’s the problem with drippy dresses. They look lovely while standing but they can be awkward to move in.
She looks amazing, but the neckline is a bit too high for my taste. When you’re rocking that bosom, it’s good to give it just a little bit of air, nothing vulgar, mind you. This gives off a whiff of T-shirt.
love her… she looked spectacular – just really classy and beautiful. i loved her humble thank you speech and i’m so glad she won. she was definitely one of my highlights of the night….
THAT’s how you do larger size. Classy, beautiful, hair is perfect, accessories are off the chart. WINNER!
Beautiful, and I bet she didn’t mind wrestling the skirt up those steps to get the Oscar!
Melissa McCarthy totally needs Octavia’s stylist number, stat. Octavia looked amazing.
A star is born. She’s adorable, I’m so glad she won.
I didn’t care for The Help (as a book; I didn’t see the movie), but this woman is fast becoming my fashion idol. She knows how to dress her shape. Please, TLo, pictures in casual clothes so the rest of us can steal her tips! 😀
Shazam! That is how you do it.
Proof that those old rules about ‘don’t dress large women in light colors’ are made to be broken. Compare this look to what Melissa Macarthy wore (which hovered in ‘couch cover’ territory). It isn’t the color value necessarily, but it IS the amount of yardage and what you do with it.
Gorgeous. She could teach a class on picking glamorous dresses that are well-fitted and flattering.
She really does look great. She needs to do Melissa McCarthy a solid and introduce her to Mr. Shoji.
My word, TS did right by her here. Stunning, full stop.
I want her gays.
Now that’s glamour. Her face is so pretty in motion but at rest it often looks either grumpy or tired. God, genes are so inconvenient. Glad they captured a good expression in the last picture.
I always think that too. She always looks like she has a toothache and doesn’t want any air to get into her mouth. Just really down in the dumps.
Octavia has definitely found her designer and has been WERQing the hell out of some Tadashi.
I gasped out loud when I first saw her on the carpet. What a great night for her!
She looks great in the dress, but I thought her make up could have been better.
almost look of the night for me. She looks equal parts all things good served up like delish sundae.
Beautiful. She has a relaxed and happy expression on her face — which means the dress is perfect.
I squeeed LOUDLY when she appeared on the red carpet, I was so excited for how pretty she looked!
I love that dress.
I loved her reaction to winning.
This was one of my faves of the night. Truly a case where the dress was for the woman rather than the woman sacrificed to the dress.
You go and get it, girl.
The nanosecond someone knocks this off I will buy it and get married in it. The groom is secondary and can be imported from overseas if necessary.
I love her in this look, and I want to own that dress but… why does girlfriend never smile for these pictures? She always looks mildly irritated.
Just flawless, I love everything about this look on her!
She looks so great! And she won!
Beautiful. But when she stands like that (last photo) it makes her look like she’s doing the bun-in-the-oven belly hold. Ladies, don’t stand like that unless you want everyone to think you’re pregnant.
Octavia and TS are the best couple of the night! A match made in fashion heaven.
For one thing, it makes a huge difference that she is actually *smiling*, at least in the last pic.
