Oscars In or Out: Rooney Mara in Givenchy Couture

Posted on February 26, 2012

We feel like this requires discussion.

Givenchy Spring 2009 Couture Collection

Sure, it’s weird and head-turning and eminently discussable and we would expect no less from the Audreybot at the Oscars. Two things, though.

1: The detail in the lower back looks like some sort of brace or bandage; and

2: Her tits look like they’re crying.

But the hair and makeup are stunning, we must say.

Kittens make the call:

IN! Dramatic and weirdly gorgeous!

OUT! Creepy bride!

Oh, and Katy Perry’s Violet Beauregarde getup got a semi-enthusiastic IN from the minions.

  • IN. Only she could wear this.

    • Tom Shea

For the purpose of this discussion, I agree. IN.

  • Libby Rhoman

So, so, In.  I really love her version of the gown and it suits her perfectly.  Her tits look far more comfortable than a few other pairs on the red carpet (coughViolaDaviscough).

    • Libby Rhoman

Wait, do you mean they look like they are weeping? Or that they look uncomfortable?  I think I just now got that.

But it is so dramatic and evocative.  Not  unexpected from the Bot.

      • Vodeeodoe

I think they mean that the cut of the fabric over her boobs look like frowns, or sad faces.

    • Agreed – In

  • I vote in. It wasn’t your standard gown and it fit with her Abudreybot persona. Yes, her boobs look like they are crying, but I think she (and maybe only she) can pull it off.

  • In! It’s delicate and interesting, and is more so the closer you look.

    • Yes, the detailing doesn’t really pop, but the overall effect is still lovely – bandages, odd boob area and all.
Girlfriend sure loves her cutouts.  Glad she wore the bangs tonight.

  • So IN. I love how she plays with a particular persona and I think she looks fierce as shit, despite the crying tits.

  • I give her an IN.  But she is the only one who could work this look.

    • luciaphile

       I agree. In

  • 1. That aspect of the design is interesting, and I feel injects some of the “disturbing and unconventional” qualities of the Givenchy label into an otherwise standard dress.

    2. Tits don’t always have to look “happy”, haha. I love when designers play with busts, especially on gowns.

  • It just looks weird.  I was really hoping she would show up in a WERQ-worthy ensemble (and with bangs swept to the side).  I can’t.  OUT.

  • Sobaika Mirza

I’m not necessarily a fan of her look, but for what she does, there’s no denying she did it right for the Oscars. In.

  • Claudia Fernandes

IN, it’s rooney mara oscar night mode

  • Carrie L. Boram

    Gak! No. Hate the boobflaps.

    • Celandine1

Yeah it’s OUT. The boobflabs, yuck. But it looks so much better on Rooney than the model.

  • Fabulously dramatic, show stopper and its not generic 🙂

  • Carla Williams

OUT. She was lifeless on the red carpet.

  • Yosa Addiss

It looks a lot better in the photos than it did on the red carpet.  I have been thinking about it, and I know I will talk about the dress- so in that way it is a winner.  But, I still vote out.  She could have picked a talk-about dress that was lovely, but she didn’t.

  • It washes her out and is ugly. OUT

  • jenno1013

Out.  For exactly the reasons you specify:  crying tits and bandage back.  If it were hiked up an inch and a half in the front, maybe that would have saved it.

  • Cousin_Rose

Didn’t like it but on seeing the runway version it’s an IN. On looking a fifth time, maybe I love it. It certainly isn’t ordinary

  • How can this be anything but IN?

  • In. It’s consistent and head-turning. The dress is a progression of everything else she’s worn this awards season.  Even though it’s not unexpected, she looks like a star (albeit in her weird, chilly way).

  • Rachel Moss

IN, because it it strange and ethereal and she looks like a glamorous alien which is what you want. But really, I will cry if I have to see many more unsupported boobs on the red carpet. Small-breasted ladies, even you need to think about this, trust me!  I know the design of the dress is partly responsible for how saggy they look, but I agree with TLo that they look like they’re crying. Sad Pandas.

  • VioletFem

  • TieDye64

IN. But only on her. Looks better on tv than the pics, I think.

  • Elaine Rodriguez

    In!  Gorgeous!

  • It works for her, but not the rest of the world. IN

  • IN.

  • rumcg66

IN. Some minor tit issues but they don’t really detract from the overall look, which is fabulous.

  • Shoelover1512

I have to say OUT even though it pains me to do so. It just seems off.

  • Translates better in stills than on camera for film.  That being said, weird is a good word for it.  I just think the entire dress looks sad.  OUT.

  • In, because I saw her moving in it. Pictures just don’t do it justice.

    • Alisa Rivera

I agree on the IN, this was much better on TV than it is in these photos.

  • Oooh, in! I even like the crying boobs detail. Go figure.

  • Amy Ellinger

  • soooo IN. there is no questioning this, she looks way better than that model too

  • IN. But only on her; the runway model looks cray-cray.

  • Hate the bang-helmet.  Love the red lips.  Initially hated the dress, but the more I look at it, the more inspired I think it is.  In.

  • Sara__B

  • Nanaia

She’s too pale for this. She needs something for  a splash of color. OUT

  • I want to love it, but something about the fit on top bothers me. I have to say Out.

  • MK03

    UGH. So over her.

  • serenitynow02

Too much white; it’s blinding. No wonder her boobies are sad. Out from me.

  • I don’t understand the comments about her boobs crying. They don’t look smooshed or uncomfortable to me.

I’m gonna say in just because it’s quite striking on the Audreybot…

  • If you don’t study it at length it’s a beauty

  • It’s an IN!

Disappointing year, no? You know when Judy Greer looks like the hottest piece of ass walking the Oscars red carpet something’s not quite right…

  • in but I thought she’d be better

  • zelavie

    Out.  Sad boobies.

  • Cynica

At least the dress looks better than it did on the runway. I give it a meh.

  • out.  Is this girl frigging allergic to goddamn jewelry? wtf?  She looks like she got TP’d.

  • I totally thought “sad boobies” when I saw this. Your take on it is completely accurate, but hair and makeup are insufficient to save it. OUT.

  • Weepy boobs make it creep just into OUT territory, which is a shame because I love everything else about it.

  • leah besson

out.  i love the dress in general, but it doesn’t fit her and it’s so predictable.

  • velomango

My favorite part – she’s wearing a gown from 2009. Rock on sister – way to avoid the pressure to wear the latest couture. In.

  • Pennymac

OUT Too pale and bridal for the Oscars. And the fit is weird. And the hair reminds me of Sumo wrestler hair.

  • Hillary Matlin

  • I’m down with crying tits. I mean, not for just anyone, but Audrey, yes. IN.

  • butterflysunita

IN.  She looks lovely, though on the model that dress is absolutely hideous.  Looks like a ripped shower curtain liner.

    • That thing the model is wearing can’t even be called a dress. “Ripped shower curtain liner” indeed.

Anyway, I think Rooney looks fab. Totally IN.

  • OhSayNow

OUT. She looks like a moody, washed out mermaid.

  • andi56

Eh. Comparing her to Audrey should be a crime punishable by death.

  • WritingWonder

Torn on this one. It’s Givenchy.  Dress is very beautiful.  But, darlings, it DOES NOT FIT HER IN THE CHEST. It looks at least a size too large.  In one of her red carpet interviews, she said she only chose this dress THIS MORNING.  Clearly, there was no time to alter it to actually fit her.  Bad fit doesn’t show so much in these photos, but in the videos, it’s so clear the bodice just is way too loose and sloppy on her.  It was gapping all over the place, and just looked ill-fitting and sloppy.

Because of crappy fit issues…an OUT.

  • Elizabetta1022

In. But you’re right about her boobs.

  • mommyca

    I love the back….. Disappointed at the boob effect….. I’m torn…..

  • cindybeeintex

IN! It’s floaty and gorgeous, and not a sequin in sight.

  • JuliaInBlack

IN! At first glance it’s smooth and elegant then it turns to wait,WTF am I looking at? I like this combination.

  • Out. She’s getting exhausting. And I hate the bodice.

  • Anathema_Device

Not loving the pleating on the bodice, but I like the overall look on her.

In, but I can totally see why people wouldn’t care for it.

  • IN!

TLo, you guys can raise your eyebrows at her all you want, she’s proving she can pull off ANYTHING.

  • lalahartma

She could have done better.  Out.

  • Lauren Maier

IN.  She’s making it work better than the model.

  • I’ve noticed I never like what she’s wearing when she goes for the severe hair.  But bless her stylist for the lining. Nevertheless – OUT.

  • Kate McCain

Out. When your first thought upon seeing this is how her boobies look sad, Out!

  • I don’t like the dress, and I honestly don’t think she’s making it work. Of course her skin, makeup and hair are perfection, but the dress just isn’t doing it for me. OUT.

  • JenXer

Even though I can’t stop seeing little nurses’ caps on her boobs I’m giving her an IN because she’s pulling it off

  • out!!!

  • Raaid_22

  • mjude

  • Kristy Evans

Yeah, the tit-wings are weird, but she looks pretty great. IN.

  • sagecreek

Very in. Completely in. You can’t be much inner.

  • LAjane81

Why can’t I vote? J’confuse. I vote out, for the record

    • Anathema_Device

There isn’t anything to click on, you just vote in the comments section.

  • Crying tits are goth! IN!

  • Pam Winters

In in in. One of the nicest dresses on the fuchsia carpet.

  • In!

  • crash1212

  • StelledelMare

It’s all Fifth Element in the back and yes the boobs are terrible. But I’ll still give her an In.

  • IN!

  • OUT. Hate it.

  • siriuslover

out. I can’t get past the hanging boobs.

  • At first I was on the fence. Then I saw the original dress. This take is an improvement, and the hair and makeup are KILLER. In.

  • Tam Duong

    IN. stunning as always

  • kagrrakid

I guess IN… her tits do indeed look like they’re crying.. but I guess overall she’s workin’ it.

  • S R

    OUT. Her boobs look awful.

  • unbornfawn

She looks stunning from the neck up. The color works on her. The cut of the dress is a little weird. It is not doing her tits any favors. The back looks like something added at the end to keep it on her body. Based on the dress –  OUT

  • I think it’s both dramatic and weirdly gorgeous AND creepy bride. I don’t really like the colour, but it still suits her. So IN I guess.

  • Joyce VG

    YAWN. OUT.

  • saanrio

    IN.  Totally and completely IN.

  • In. She looks stunning.

  • pawtley

  • Zippypie

Her body looks like it’s melting.  Neck up, looks great.

  • Haley Buchanan

IN.  It suits her. It has just the right balance of traditional, red carpet glamour and Audreybot, sci-fi weirdness.  Definite in.

  • Brenna McClellan

OUT. Don’t like it. Face gorgeous, dress not interesting enough.

  • In…I love it, except black would have been better.

  • IN but it wasn’t my favorite or anything. I knew it was Givenchy as soon as I saw her and I am glad that she stuck with them since she has been wearing them so much and to great effect. I think it’s the color that I hate the most.

  • LittleKarnak

I say Out, I think I am just tired of her.

  • OUT.

  • R. L.

OUT.  Face and hair are great but the dress is boring and saggy.

  • OUT. Agree on hair and make-up, though

  • nosniveling

in- looks way better on her than the model

  • Judy_J

Out. Droopy fit in the bustline is unforgivable.

  • mozzer0906

Out. Her tits make me sad, sad tits are never in.

  • IAmJ

It’s an OUT for me after seeing it up close during her interview with Seacrest. The fit is really awful in the tit area.

  • Violina23

I want to say IN, but the boobs are so very, very sad…  so I’ll say IN, but because I feel like she needs a hug or something

  • understateddiva

OUT for being expected.  I was hoping she’d show up in a pink or blue Oscar de la Renta and a big smile, just to mess with our heads.

  • leave_Blake_alone

IN. This is not a look I would wear or one I would recommend for 99% of female stars but this is her thing, and the white makes a great contrast with her black hair and red lips. I actually kind of like the lower back thing.

  • Sad boobs. OUT!

  • guestela

  • butter nut

    IN! she looks fantastic.

  • quiltrx

IN.  The front looks very Art Deco-ish, and the tits always looked like they were crying in that era, anyway.

And the back is giving off a very LeeLoo Dallas vibe that I respond positively to. 🙂

  • In.
I really don’t see anything horrifically bad about it.
If anything, it’s a bit safe.
Imagine if she wore the sheer version.

  • elzatelzabelz

OUT- The bodice is terrible. Her chest looks like it is sinking. I hated it ont he red carpet and still hate it now hours later. I will give her a few points for branching out from black.

  • Amy Ethington

If her boobs are crying, they are tears of joy because she looks stunning!

  • Charmaine Cropper

  • IN. This dress on this woman in this style at this occasion is perfection.

  • snarkykitten

I really like this! I think it fits the Audreybot perfectly

  • Monabel

    Not good enough.

  • PhillyDeb

OUT.  The top does not look like it fits, I hate the droopyness of the boob area, do not like the zipper at all, and the color is too washed out on her.  The draping of the bottom is beautiful however.  I keep looking at it and trying to like it due to its originality, but I just cannot like it.

  • NCDFan

It looks like an old fashioned girdle. OUT

  • tressexpress3366

    Love it all…. IN ~ IN ~ IN ~ In ~ IN!!!!!

  • too creepy looking and weird def OUT

  • IN. (I want her bangs to grow out like yesterday).

  • jw_ny

This is really up for debate?!  Soooo IN!

  • TSkot

Yeah it’s weird, but she looks great.  IN

  • xmixiex

    IN.  so in.

  • xmixiex

  • littlelistmaker

Her makeup is beautiful but I HATE HATE HATE the boob flaps oh my god. Out.

  • elemspbee

    In. this rox.

  • ConstanceGrace

  • In. So long as she doesn’t turn around.

  • IN

  • Scarlet39

I love this on her  The boob flaps somehow suit her

  • IN

  • jilly_d

Her face is superhuman.  I want to love the dress because I love her so much, but I just can’t with the boobs.  OUT.

  • In. not great, but considering ‘her’ it could  have been so much worse (creepy, sad, awful, disturbing, goth, horrible, etc) that this is fine- sure it looks like a nightgown + bandages but….. we were spared worse.

  • NasserShaheen

    In. It works on her.

  • Jaspreet5

  • bitterk

Creepy old lady in a nursing home wandering the halls in her wedding dress from the 30s

    • Pennymac

Yes! Or the quintisential “lady in white” that haunts old houses!

  • Ana

IN. I had the opposite reaction.  I loved the dress and the structure but hated the severe makeup and tween bangs.

  • IN.. this year’s oscars is boring enough without Cate Blanchett & Tilda already… respect audreybot for doing something out of the box…

  • out. it all melty.

  • Judih1

Had it been in a different color, I might vote it in. Instead OUT cause it looks like a creepy bride

  • IN. I mean it’s Audreybot in Givenchy Couture for Christ’s sake!

  • Farthingale

Big win for the hair and makeup. Breast tears steal a few perfection points.

  • benjamin478

She’s an IN for sure. Thank god somebody brought style to the oscars

  • out. harsh and unpretty.

  • annaplurabelle

IN. It’s perfect for her and you can see how much she loves wearing it.

  • Rrroza

IN. Wish I could see it in real life. Can’t see the subtle details

  • AzulFashion

IN.  At first it looked too pale and frail, but after consideration, I think that is why it works. Such a beautiful contrast to her severe hair color and style.

  • CozyCat

In.  Risk taking on the red carpet should be encouraged–there’s too much safe reliance on stylists.  And in this case it fits her personal style and works.

But I will say that this only works because she is, well, let’s say it, small busted.  It actually enhances her figure for that reason.  Which is what clothes should do.

  • There is a face on the front of the dress, but I think it’s a pleased look, not crying eyes.
And the back represents the face mask on a football helmet, clearly an homage to the Giants-football-owning relatives for whom Rooney was named.
Odd dress. I’m torn. Hell, OUT.

  • SatelliteAlice

Out.  She has saggy unhappy boobs in this.  Who wants that?

  • Olggie

    In. Striking.

  • tired_mommy

Now that I saw Viola and Michelle, Rooney is IN.

  • Elena

    Very in.

  • Out. It’s not weird, it’s just predictable and ugly.

  • lucasuk82

Out. She looks like melting ice cream.  I had really high hopes for her after all the strange and wonderful things she’s pulled out during the “dancing for Grandma” for GWTDT. Sadness.

  • I can overlook the sad nipples. IN.

  • brookeinmn

I’ll give her an IN barely. It was probably gorgeous in person…not so great on camera.

  • Sarafina Angstadt-Leto

IN. I really like it on her

  • crackineggs

In. Out. No, in.  I can’t decide -wish I’d seen it in motion.  Och, I’ll give her an In. Sort of.

  • Glynis Fediuk

    Undoubtedly in.

  • CassandraMortmain

The bodice looked better on tv.  IN.  She’s an original.

  • Nariya

This is effing weird. I love it.

  • Pupioso

Out. It just doesn’t fit her well, looks droopy and what’s with all the dresses looking so washed out.

  • sarahofalessergod

IN.  This is perfect for her.

  • granddelusion

She’s too young to have saggy boobs with eyebrows.

  • OUT…it is not a flattering dress, at all.

  • OUT for posture, but IN for being called “The Roons” from the stage!

  • Sweetpea176

  • In, it’s perfect for the Audreybot.

  • Love little Swedish Batman. IN!

  • out

  • Zyxomma

IN! The detail on the lower back does not look like a brace/bandage, unless you’re referring to the thermal bandages costume Milla Jovovich wore in The Fifth Element (it was Gaultier, as were all the costumes in that fun film). Rooney Mara looked spectacular, and should have won the Oscar. Who cares about Meryl Streep’s performance as Ronald Raygun in a dress? No one liked the movie, and most of us won’t see it until it’s on the small screen.

  • Pterodactyl111

  • Meh. The back is weird. It makes it look like the bra she clearly is not wearing is showing.  The color seems in danger of fading away.  But, she is wearing the hell out of it, and she’s got her stylist working overtime.  Personally I’ll be glad for her when this GWTDT publicity tour is done and she could, for example, find a hair color that doesn’t make her look ill.

  • IN!

  • IN.  This suits Rooney Mara’s carefully crafted weird public persona, and hair and makeup are indeed excellent.  Karlie Kloss looks like a consumptive wearing the runway version with the awful greige eye makeup.

  • Lynn Landry

out. the tit thing was was just redonk

  • ThaliaMenninger

OUT. She looks like she’s in the running for Mummy of the Year.

  • IN.  IN.

  • Anna Tree

Doesn’t seem to fit in the bodice or butt. OUT

  • ccm800

    In – love it

  • MissMariRose

    OUT. Sad boobs.

  • PastryGoddess

IN and stand up girl..you are at the Oscars

  • I thought she looked smashing. IN.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Big In, one of the looks of the night for me.  Her bangs are finally growing out enough that she can wear more than just severe or avant-garde fashions.  This is a nice transition from extreme to feminine.  But I still love most everything she’s worn this season and I really love how she’s made the most of her role’s severe haircut, fashion wise.

  • dharmabum8

In, in, in. By far the most interesting starlet in a sea of blah, fashion wise.

  • PeaceBang

She looks like she’s being dragged into a pool of sparkly white quicksand. And I love that. IN.

  • Not my favorite, but she looks beautiful. I wish she had worn color, but she’s Rooney, she’s got a look and she’s working it. In.

  • OUT. Her tits look really sad and her hair pisses me off.

  • I have to give it an “out.” I like it except for that weird top. The see-through lace wide straps and the flapped bodice pieces look weird, and take away from the dress’s overall appearance.

  • nannypoo

I don’t like anything about this. Her makeup looks harsh and the dress is droopy.

  • MzzPants

  • Filing_and_giving_things_names

From the front, an in, but I was not a fan of the back.

  • MilaXX

IN, but I was hoping she would bust out a color that wasn’t black, white or red.

  • sk8tfan

Out. It’s pouchy in the tummy and she’s too young for that, and it doesn’t fit across the chest. And buy/ borrow some damn jewelry already.

  • BookishBren

I vote out. I don’t care for it and her hair is ridiculous.

  • OUT.

  • IN.  and i love the way she looks in it SOOOOOOOOOOO much more than on the model!

  • Toto Maya

    Out. Hate the boob hanglets.

  • OUT. The front just doesn’t look like it fits very well. But even the E! talking heads were drawing Audrey comparisons when she walked out in Givenchy.

  • in, much prettier than the runway version

  • L.

    IN!  The back is pretty.

  • DeborahLipp

Tit spoilers. Like two Trans-Ams strapped to her chest.

She’s WERQing the SHIT out of it, and I’m close to letting her pass. Out by an inch.

  • Daenyx

    Very, very IN.

  • “2: Her tits look like they’re crying.” omg dying. I thought something similar but not nearly as awesome. I vote OUT.

  • leilah

IN.  The back bracing is interesting (a fully-acceptable term — think of it as clever reinforcement), tho’ it looks a little bathing suit-like; but without it, the sides might’ve hung like Michael Costello’s last dress on PR…and it’, too.  The bodice is a little droopy for sure, but when paired with the lacy detail, hair and makeup it has a vintage look.

  • StrandedFashionista

    I, I can’t. I’m sorry, but OUT.

  • OUT. The fit is terrible and she looks like a walking corpse.

  • AWStevens

She should have just put a wife-beater tank top on a white skirt.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

love it other than the boobbrows.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

It’s weird but still pretty, just like Rooney herself. Plus, it looked lovely in all her closeups during the ceremony. IN.

  • Sarah Lynnae

I almost like it, but the top whispers “swimsuit” to me, so… not in.

  • k op

     In!  Love it!

  • j_anson

IN. Man, I feel exactly the same way with this as I do about the Michelle Williams dress. It’s not a home run, but it suits her and it’s getting the job done.

  • berkeleygirl

From the neck up, the best look of the night… Below the neck, it did not live up to its possibilities.  On the red carpet, she fessed up to only picking the dress that morning.  Maybe could have worked with a good fitting, but it didn’t totally work for me.

  • sleepycat

    In looks great on her.

  • I give it an IN though I agree the tit area is problematic. I also wish she’d ditch the harsh bangs.

  • AudreysMom

I’m going with an IN here.

  • IN, but only just. She’s worn better.

  • Sara-Ann Collins

    Cry tits are always OUT

  • miwome

  • I would’ve preferred one of the dresses from a collection a few posts back, but she looks great. IN.

  • littlemissstrange

In. I love her style… strange and sexy.

  • Completely IN!She looks absolutely gorgeous.

  • IN.

  • NurseEllen

OUT.  This does absolutely zero for her, or me.

  • Again, also not what I’d anticipated, but I think this was the right choice for our Audreybot here (and folks were especially making the compare/contrasts tonight!). I will say, this is too much dress for such a slip of a guhl, all half-naked waist-up and spilling out about the legs, and I want to hike it up at the bodice, but overall, it was a smart move. IN.

  • prettybigkitty

IN.  Among the best of the night.  Which isn’t saying very much.

  • Vaniljekjeks

  •  Those sad tits ruin everything. OUT.

  • OUT. Ill-fitting and totally boring — especially considering all her white and black outfits during the seemingly endless Girl with the Dragon Tattoo promo tour.

  • Evelina Chang

    IN. It’s stunning!

  • In! Like Odette and Odile fused together!

  • In!

  • demidaemon

OUT. The weird seaming in the bodice and around her nether regions is not pretty. Also, this is a far cry from the runway dress, and its toned down version is no better. It’s a runway only dress, not a red carpet dress.

  • I’ll give her an in, I think she looks amazing.

  • I think she looks stunning. IN.

  • laurenoodle

I love her and she looks stunning, but I hate the boob flaps 🙁

  • alyce1213

Out. Nightgown with sad boobs.  SO TIRED of those flat bangs already.

    • marco5ny

Double out!  This dress moves her flat bangs to her chest which are equally tiresome.

  • greatscoutm

Out.  I was disappointed in this look. I have been loving her RC looks of the last few months, but this (which looks better in the still photos than it did on our TV) made her look washed out and seemed a little ill fitting in the bodice.  I agree about the bandaged back.
    Makeup–big IN.

  • IN. Dramatic enough for the Oscars, weird enough for Miss Mara. Adapted the original gown for the occasion perfectly.

  • brora

A cleavage baring dress surely only works if you’ve actually got boobs?

  • maria foulquie garcia

in anybody else this would’ve been a mess… but in her, it’s amazing. IN.

  • IN. Stunning. Weird, for sure, but she is working it like a 13 hour shift.

  • Esz

Oh my gosh she is amazing! LOVE her – Fantastic dress – 100% in!

  • FayeKat

From the neck up she looks gorgeous, but i hate the rest of it…”Her tits look like they’re crying”… so OYT

  • RzYoung

Just about an IN from me. This Audreybot style is growing on me now.

  • Heath Sledge

  • stunning, and a perfect culmination for the warpath she’s been making through fashion in the past months.

  • tvmovielover

In because it did look better on tv despite the weird bust (it really does need to be hiked up) and better than the model and was an appropriate finish to her award and movie premiere looks this season.

  • PrincessSlaya

Her sternum is too “starvation victim” to be on display.

  • KathKo

    She looks stunning.

  • Vodeeodoe

She’s hot as always. I would love to see her tone down the heavy contrast every now and then. Maybe a lighter wig and lipstick. That being said, I love that she wears COLOR on her lips!!! I am so over the nude to light lips on the ladies. Contrast and severe is kind of Rooney’s fashion thing right? I love that weird back brace design to contrast with the feminine front. I wish I’d seen more of it.

  • In.

  • out, the first thing i thought when i saw this actually was “it looks like her tits are crying” i like the back though

  • Vodeeodoe

Her dress and the runway dress are like second cousins. Hers looks very little like the sheath-y, Star Trek hot girl alien, see-through thang on the carpet. I think hers is much more wearable and feminine. Although Joanna Coles would still be upset that you’d have to wear it without a bra.

  • JustJenn142

I wish they had fixed the top of the dress or did something so it didn’t look so droopy/odd. The bottom half looks stunning and from the clavicle up, she looks stunning…it is just the breast section that looks weird.  I’ll still give her an in.

  • tylka5

In because it is SO her.  I wish she had worn a color though, it would have been beautiful.

  • OUT. One of my least favourite looks from last night.

  • Out.  It does nothing for her figure, and reminds me of a ripped up bed sheet from an asylum.

  • SewingSiren

IN>IN>IN>! this was easily the best gown in the whole auditorium. Weirdly gorgeous indeed. Perfect for the role too.

  • GorgeousThings

Neck up, IN. Neck down, not as much, but still way more IN than the negligee look on the runway. If Rooney’s tits look sad, the poor model’s tits are sobbing.

  • OUT. I was hoping for so much more.

  • estella_nyc

    ::cringes:: creepy bride – OUT.

  • lilyofbp

    IN–in fact, WERQ!

  • lilyofbp

    IN–in fact, WERQ!

  • I don’t like giving her an OUT but I will, just because my first glimpse of her involved a gasp of dismay and these pictures (and your commentary) convince me that it was justified.

  • It’s a gorgeous dress, but I do wish that new actresses didn’t have to show off 90% of their bodies under sheer getups in order to be noticed. Or that actors would have to wear sheer tuxes to events. Either way would work for me.

  • IN. She changed up the black and she’s pulling off what imo is a very difficult dress. And I am dying for her hair.

  • samitee

IN IN IN. This is perfection on her.

  • polishpauper

In! She is the only one who could pull this look off and she did!

  • Pants_are_a_must

Audreybot is wearing lingerie, essentially. Audrey would not have been pleased. OUT.

  • Aly Light

  • kaycem

“…her tits look like they’re crying.”

exactly!  my first reaction was “why are her boobies so sad?” LOL.  no bueno:  OUT.

  • Unbelievable.  She had her choice of any dress in the world, and this is what she picked?  I expected her to be striking and unusual, but I also expected her to be stunning.  So disappointing.  OUT.

  • In. Couldn’t tell you why, but it looks perfect on her, crying tits and all.

  • IN! I love it! Haters to the left!

  • Cathy S

I have to go with dramatic and weirdly gorgeous. I don’t think it would look good on anyone else though. It’s all hers.

  • In. Absolutely.

  • SapphoPoet

    IN. The bangs are back!

  • OUT.  Merely because of whatever is going on around her chest and ribs.  This is the Oscars, get it together. I think this is the one day of year you shouldn’t’ get a pass for fucking it up on any level.

  • piecesofconfetti

    IN. It’s perfectly her.

  • DinaSews

OUT.  All of the beautiful looks that you had posted from NYFW that we all pegged for her and she shows up in gauze?  Yuck.  OUT again, just for good measure.

  • Out! Her boobs especially and her in general look like they are melting like an ice sculpture at a tacky wedding

  • tallgirl1204

    1930s screen goddess fabulous.  In.

  • Out, because you could see in other photos that the zipper and stitching wasn’t pure white like the rest of the dress and it looked sloppy and dingy. I read somewhere this morning that she picked it out last minute so that’s the reason for the (relatively) crap finish?

  • sid123

In. She and this dress together. In.

  • sid123

In. She and this dress together. In.

  • Out. I’m so dissapointing for her wearing this shitty dress.

  • Susan Crawford

OUT. A droop-fest above the waist, a puddle at the feet, and a back full of ace bandages? Not good.

  • In.

  • Weird and unflattering on the model, and not much better on Rooney.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

IN!  A Thousands times IN!!!  FABULOUS COUTURE FASHION.  My best dressed.

  • Brittany Lozano

So much IN I shouted at my tv screen when she was spotted for the first time.

  • In, in a medical fetishwear kind of way.

  • LongTall_Sally

IN — definitely the right girl, right dress for the occasion.

  • Larkin21

    She looks good. IN.

  • Allyson Wells

I’d say she’s an IN because the overall look is working here, but I certainly wouldn’t call the little poof on the back of her head “stunning.”

  • BeeBeauNYC

IN. Not sure white is the best color for her, but she’s working it and she does look amazing.

  • mznormann

    So definitely IN!

  • sweetestsith

I love the back. In despite the crazy boob flaps. She looks bizarrely fantastic.

  • bringbackbeatles

IN…she’s the only one who can rock this.

  • Susan683

I love Rooney but was disappointed.  I thought it didn’t fit properly and some accessorizing (small, delicate earrings or a delicate bracelet, perhaps) wouldn’t have killed her.  But she didn’t look like anyone else and her makeup and hair were perfect.  In.

  • McSpanky

Out. It looks like what a ’50s bride would wear on the first night of her honeymoon. And anorexia is never attractive, sorry Anna Wintour.

  • DominoEstella

  • fungstyle

out. this was her moment to stun everyone, and instead she just looks like she’s a bit uncomfortable.

  • AthenaJ

IN! Rooney Mara is the only person who can pull this dress off. SOOO much better than the see-thru version on the scary granny-panty-wearing zombie model!

  • OUT. I actually like the back, and the extra interest there *almost* saves the look, but her drooping bustline just makes me too sad.

  • out – looks ridiculous

  • Creepy bride, but In!

  • Mostly gorgeous, except that her boobs look sad.

  • zmayhem

I’m gonna split my vote: Creepy Bride – IN. Love the weird floaty decaying purity elegance of it, handwaving away the less-than-perfect fit since (a) she picked it out that morning, and (b) she still looks better than the model), and don’t mind the lack of jewelry — her hair, eyes, brows and lips are so dramatic and arresting that I don’t mind. I actually kind of love that everything from the neck down is filmy and insubstantial. She looks like Miss Havisham in the Val Lewton adaptation of “Great Expectations” that sadly exists only in my mind (or possibly the Oscar Wilde/Aubrey Beardsley stage production).

Probably wouldn’t be anything near an in for any other wearer, and probably not an in for any viewer who doesn’t already love that aesthetic, but for this woman in this aesthetic at this moment, IN IN IN oh dear me yes IN. Now I’m going to retire to my decrepit fainting couch and contemplate her look and slip into an absinthe-infused fever dream.

  • aimee_parrott

I give it a marginal IN.  I don’t know if anyone else could pull off this look.  I really don’t like the boob-embellishment, but the rest of it works.

  • I wish she’d worn a color, and the boobs are way too sad. Out.

  • Amanda Entwistle

OUT – The detailing on the skirt is pretty amazing, but I just cannot get behind the frowny boob covers.

  • deathandthestrawberry

Unusual dress, but it looks stunning on her. It looks very art deco and almost reminds me of the robot from Metropolis. Not a bad reference in my view. IN.

  • fiestyfashionfem

It’s an IN – because she is lovely and well-styled and many parts of the gown are gorgeous – but you can absolutely tell she picked it the morning of and had very little time to modify/fix the bodice.

  • belfebe

IN.  I love it.  Weird but beautiful and eminently Rooney.

  • BazoDee

The crying boobs are too distracting -OUT

  • I also thought it made her boobs look sad…literally. Like they were frowning. Out. Only she can werq it, but I don’t like the dress, so I can’t vote in.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • In!  Love the Audreybot in white with the severe hair.

  • Out – back to the cra cra bangs that almost make her look like she has a unibrow because her brows follow the same straight cut across her head.  Don’t love the dress and feel like we’ve seen her in this kind of thing throughout the movie promo red carpets.  I was disappointed….

  • In! Creepybride is good!

  • Her hair is darling and the makeup perfect–too bad her dress is kinda droopy.  Not a creepy bride, but a sad one.  OUT.

  • It’s the kind of dress that looks really bizarre when the camera finds her sitting in the audience.  It was like her boobs had eyebrows.

  • EEKstl

IN, she looks great, but how much more striking would she have been if she took this RC opportunity to do something different with her hair – I’m really getting over the dye job and the short bangs.  Still love her but time to evolve a bit, darling!

  • Saggy boobs should never be a fashion feature. OUT

  • Geno Boggiatto

IN! She looked gorgeous, and I loved that at first glance the gown didn’t seem like much, but on a second look you started to see all the detail.

  • minnye

IN.  The first photo reminds me of a squid.  Love her odd style.

  • She looks fab. Easily my favorite RC look. IN!!!

  • CQAussie

Love the back, hate the front, loved the hair and make-up.  So just by majority voting – this is an IN??  Yes, IN.

  • mhlmh

out. even though I think it looks better on her than the transparent version on the model, the part at the boobs is just too much. She’s not wearing a stitch of jewelry. . . isn’t that the fun part of oscar night?

  • OUT. She needs to start dressing like Rooney Mara and stop dressing like Lisbeth Salander.

    • alyce1213

      Yes please.

  • marilyn

Out.  The dress just emphasizes how flat she is.

  • MoHub

Mostly In, although I too reacted to the “eyelids” over her tits.

And a vast improvement over the runway version.

  • RroseSelavy

IN. It’s lovely and dramatic and the simplicity of the white against the black hair is lovely. On the other hand, the length of it shortens her. Perhaps if the train were more proportional?

  • OUT. Dear Lord why are her boobies melting? STOP GLOBAL WARMING!

  • oohsparkley!

In. It suits her.  But I wish she’d wear some color and change her hairstyle.  I’m tired of her dressing as her character.

  • MightyMarshal

Out. I’m so over it. She looks ridic.

  • Melanie Harrison

IN! Love her make-up, bangs, and the dress really is her style.

  • nancylee61

Out. Hate the droopy dress, looks like an old fashioned slip. Hate the top. It is a sad dress. Makes me sad.

  • kentiesgirl

This one is so close it’s giving me a headache. I like the back detail, and it is ‘her’ dress, but anything that makes a girl that young and fit look like her boobs are falling off, especially at the Oscars, gives me pause. I say in. But it could’ve been IN. This is why we need to be able to wear bras designers.

Love the hair and makeup as well. Anything other than sleek would’ve outed this one, IMHO.

  • fireontiger

In, but barely, because those boobs? No.

  • In. I have a feeling in 20 years or so this will be looked back on as an iconic moment for her. It’s so very unusual and unique to her, but still pretty and feminine.

  • kimmeister

OUT. Don’t like the droopy boobs or the straitjacket back.

  • mhleta

Out. I love the bottom 1/3 and I love her hair and makeup, but everything in between is looking disturbingly “Post-op” to me, like at any moment her stitches could open up and she could start bleeding from the nipples.

  • No. No no no no.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

IN! Creepy Bride, yes but it’s still IN!

  • In but she should never do interviews she’s awkward as shit.

  • Out, but not by much.  I’m just glad she did not do a black dress.  The bondage thing is getting real old, real fast.

  • aristida_girl

Out…although I like her a lot, the dress looks strange on her and the details are lost against the whiteness of her skin..not good

  • sockandaphone

it looks better on pictures because on tv all i could see was those sad boob windows. the cutouts were just weird. out.

  • RoxieRider

I guess on balance I don’t especially like it, but she looks beautiful and interesting and striking. In.

  • SpcilK

    IN, Love her in this!

  • SneakyKitty

In.  It’s strange and interesting without being over the top.

  • Ennovi_R

  • Mostly In.  I’m glad she had some lining under it, and although the bodice reminds me of sleepy eyes, it actually gives her a bosom.  She’s small and delicate enough to pull off this enchanted look. Hair and makeup are lovely.

  • It needed to be taken in at the sides slightly but she looks great.  Whoever did the makeup and hair beat the hell out of her — flawless!

  • Laylalola

In. No way it’s an out — but I am so tired of her heavy eyebrows and harsh makeup knowing what a stunner she is/was before Dragon.

  • BuffaloBarbara

  • altalinda

Out.  I don’t mind the back (it’s kind of interesting) but the lack of color detracts, and the eyelids for her breasts are a miss.  Yawn.

  • Vickiefantastico

    Out. Too weird.

  • carpediva

IN. It’s so Rooney. Which is kind of amazing to say/think given how short a time that she’s been in our fashion consciousness.  But unlike Blake Lively or Chloe Sevigny or other starlets they try to shove down our throats as fashionistas, I find myself always wondering how Rooney plans to turn it out on a given night.

  • ringthing

Out. She’s worn so many sharp and edgy looks since her movie came out that it’s extra disappointing that this looks so lacklustre.

  • No thanks.

  • Louise Bryan

In.  I’m glad it got lined between the runway and the red carpet.

  • PhoebePowers

As IN as it gets. The look of the night, no question about it. Stunning.

  • chitowndg

  • Reminds me of one of those toilet paper dresses you make at bridal showers. So, OUT.

  • AlexisPayne

  • Emmyllou

Out. It’s a beautiful piece, and I love her looks, but it actually seems as if the dress is too big for her. It’s just (dot, dot, dot) HANGING there.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

IN.  I love the back.  Agree about the sad boobs, though.

  • annieanne

    It’s totally her.

  • Jessica Mann Gutteridge

The whole dress is dragging her down. I wish it fit better, then it would be stunning.

Love her shiny hair and the severity of it, but I don’t care for the length of the bangs. The makeup is perfection, and her eyes are just gorgeous. I do really love the white gown/shiny dark hair/red lips kind of glamour.

  • formerlyAnon

IN. Big in. The front bodice is very reminiscent to me of the ’20s/30s but just reminiscent – not a period piece, and she has the look (meaning, lack of giant boobs and a small frame) for that reference.

If I have a criticism it’s that a skosh (or two skoshes) less fullness at the hem/train would have been more appropriate as well as harmonizing better with the brace-y look of the lower back.

  • ArchaicSmile

I’m not overly fond of the gown, but from the neck up she looks lovely. Even though she looks like Spock’s little sister.

  • PhillipWilde

It’s just weird enough to be perfect for her. IN.

  • Out. She looks too Amelie. But not in a good way.

  • IN.  A perfect capper for her Audreybot season.

  • Candigirl1968

In.  She is owning that dress.

  • greyhoundgirl

I love the detail in the back and how she changed it from the runway look.  But the front is a little…hangie.  I still give her an IN though.

  • Stefanos Mantyla

  • IN

  • mustard_stain

IN. She might be a robot with no feelings whatsoever, but it works on her.

  • melizer

  • thebitterkitten

eh I guess I vote whatever the majority is voting.  I don’t really have an opinion either way.

  • Lisa

IN!  See, when I hate on her, it’s for her tired Marilyn Manson schtick.  Her Audrey schtick, on the other hand, doesn’t bother me one bit – if the girl can work it, more power to her.  I thought she looked fantastic!

  • Her face looks fab, but the bodice of that dress looks like a mistake, sort of like lapels gone wrong. Still, IN, because she’s wearing the shit out of it.

  • Shannon Maxham

She’d look even better if someone inflated her chest cavity. Not necessarily her boobs, but she looks awful….concave.

  • Out.  Color is awful on her; hair and makeup are what she always wears.

  • IN.  I really expected to see her in the black J. Mendel that Nina Dobrev wore to EJ’s party.  This is almost ethereal for her.  I could also see this dress being an ‘IN’ on Cate Blanchett, but she’s probably the only other person who could wear this.

  • BrightsideSusan

I thought it looked like they have little hoodies.

     She looked beautiful!  IN.

  • Meh, the back is very pretty. But that’s about all I can say.

  • up with pod people

Out. Too much titscrepancy! Three titlayers!

  • Emily Scott

Love this. IN. The modifications from the runway version are terrific.

  • malvernite

  • marywv

Oooh… it pains me but OUT.

  • CCDilg

  • hearkentoit

I love it. It’s just the right nod to Oscars glamour without losing her signature style. It’s like a beautiful classic gown, but made of cobwebs and hospital gauze. Perfect for this girl. IN.

  • Grace Ritt

  • IN

  • Northern_Light_27

    IN. Just stunning.

  • Anonymoth

Gorgeous. This dress suits her perfectly. IN.

  • SO IN.

  • Kristen Wirick

She looks a bit ghostly, yet seductive and beautiful. I love it. In.

  • I really really love it, and she’s making me love her. She has powers beyond that of normal humankind.

  • MissAnnieRN

  • elizonthelam

Perfect hair and make-up do not make up for the weepy tragedy that is the bodice. OUT!

  • Sophie Collier

    IN.  It’s just weird enough.

  • mike__tv

NO argument, IN! Now discus the leg!

  • creepy bride OUT! why? because A. she doesn’t look pretty (though she does look eye catching) B. she doesn’t look attractive (just thin and tall) C. she doesn’t look snow white pale, but sickly instead. not the right shade of white for her apparently

  • sleah_in_norcal

INININ.  the audreybot is forever.  but if i see another white dress on anyone but her….
