Oscars In or Out: Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen

Posted on February 27, 2012

We’ve been really hard on Jessica throughout awards season. We have a reason for that. It’s because she’s normally very, very bad at dressing herself.

But we gay-gasped at the sight of her last night. Admittedly, we do think the dress might be wearing her, but it’s so much better than the ill-fitting getups in colors that don’t suit her. In fact, we’re thinking a black-and-gold combo might just be the best for her coloring. She should consider making this her thing. The black works well against her skin and the gold picks up on her hair color. And for once, we have no issues with the hair and makeup. No, girl did alright for herself here. It’s not perfect, but it’s as close to it as she’s ever gotten. We say IN.

But if there’s one thing the Bitter Kittens like to do, it’s to call us crazy, so we’re turning the final say over to y’all.

Vote Now!

IN! Oh, sweetie! We KNEW you could do it!

OUT! You’re crazy! That’s too much dress for her!

Voting on Michelle William’s lampshade and Rooney Mara’s corpse bride dress is still open and waiting for opinions to be loudly expressed, darlings.

Oh bravo Jessica, this is a stunning look!  IN.  The dress is fitted quite well and her hair and make-up aren’t fighting for attention.  It all just works!

  • Faberge Egg meets Rorschach testing. OUT!

    • slightlybitterkitten

      That’s a bad thing?  IN!  😉

    • Yes, I guess we’re in the minority of folks who think this is bordello fabulous, and therefore NOT appropriate for the Oscars.  Also, titshelf.  OUT.

Hair looks better soft, but it’s limp.  Makeup is excellent for once though.

  • Maria Rosenfire

Hella IN. Even if her face looks slightly scary in that first picture. I’m impressed that she’s managing to pull off Mcqueen, even something relatively tame like this dress.

  • SRQkitten

Progress in the right direction, although I agree, the dress is more wearing her than the other way around.

  • VicksieDo

    IN! Regal.

  • Melanie Harrison

  • In in in!  She looks amazing!

  • ampg

This is beautiful – not too much dress at all.  IN!

  • sarahofalessergod

Gigantic IN.  This was one of the best of the night.  I can’t find fault with anything in her look last night.  Although she should have been nominated for “The Tree of Life” but that’s neither here nor there.

  • I would have actually given her a WERQ.  IN, obviously

  • IN. For sure.

  • Judy_J

IN, but I think I’d like it better if her hair was less messy.

    • nellcote

      dump the bump-it

  • IN, might be my favorite of the night.

  • sleepycat

Um…In, but like you said the dress is wearing her.

  • Dhammadina

  • MzzPants

  • siriuslover

The black in the middle makes the dress seem a little wonky to me, but I still think she looks stunning. IN

  • I love this dress, so for that alone it gets an IN from me.

  • So very IN! She looked wonderful last night.

  • Paigealicious

I feel like she’s doing that beautiful gown a disservice by wearing it with such lank hair and boring makeup.

  • Ms_Flyover

    I think she looks spectacular.

  • I like the dress very much, and her make-up is good, but that bump-it lump is not attractive.  Still, a qualified IN.

  • SO SO IN…she looked amazing last night and her interview with Seacrest was adorable.  LOVE that she brought her Nana with her.

  • luluransom

IN! I did the gay gasp too when it crossed my screen, and I’m not even gay 😉 The stills don’t do it justice, I thought it was stunning in motion.

  • SewingSiren

This was another stand out gown of the night. Easy IN.

  • The dress is a little fussy, but the colors look amazing on her. IN

  • Victoria Perry

IN and I love her earrings.

  • Beardslee

  • EditKitten

I don’t think it fits her the best on top, but I did love her hair and makeup, because it looks done but natural at the same time — the whole thing suddenly strikes me as “not trying too hard for once.” The colors were quite fab, though. She was striking.

  • Super-IN. Probably my favorite of the night, along with Octavia Spencer.

  • fireontiger

    She looks great. IN!

  • Patricia Gillett

Out as a dress. Possibly In as a bedspread or drapes in the Park Avenue apartment of a NY socialite.

  • Hilary Sullivan

    You’re crazy…IN!

  • jw_ny

This dress works great for her and her coloring.  Hair and makeup are very soft and pretty…doesn’t compete with the dress.  She ranks in my top 5 best dressed of the evening.

  • CQAussie beat me to the word I wanted to use:  Stunning. The gold detail is to die for.

  • Jessi03

    IN IN IN!

    I gay-gasped too.

  • I think she looks gorgeous! One of the best dresses of the night. I would have chosen black earrings, what with all the golden hair and skin coloring around, but that’s just me. I say IN.

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

No, she looks fabulous. IN. Don’t love the hair, but it works well enough.

  • Linda Ellington

OUT.  The dress looks too heavy and ornate.

  • LeBarron

IN.  Love her and everything about this look.

  • I say IN, although watching that bodice cut into her armpits as she moved around made me wince last night.

    •  This! It was a fantastic dress, but the bodice needed to be fitted better. It was cutting into her armpits, and giving her weird back-boob when she was being interviewed on ABC last night.

  • Lizzyisi

  • IN, though black and gold as a signature look seems a bit excessive to me.

  • Its a whole lotta dress but she did it justice.  Loved it.

  • Stunning. IN.

  • Totally IN! Loving the eye makeup in particular, and while black & gold (especially this intricate!) can often be Too Much or Too Versailles, this is shockingly well-suited to her. I’m not sure it flatters her awesome body as much as it could, but it was such a good (and daring!) choice that I don’t really care.

  • IN IN IN!!!!!!

  • Very nice dress, but she doesn’t do anything for me. Find her to bland for such a powerful dress.

  • IN!  I love this.  I wasn’t sure the first time I saw her – I only saw her from the waist up and I feared it was going to be very heavy at the bottom, but no the gold is less at the bottom. Everything really works.

  • IN – I don’t see how this is up for debate. I don’t even think that the dress is wearing her.

  • IN IN IN! This was my favorite look of the night.

  • We need to give her some encouragement, so IN…

  • was baffled when i saw that you were putting this as an in-or-out instead of a WERQ, but hey. IN FOREVER. posted this to my blog last night saying that i didnt know who it was but by god they were killin’ it.

  • Anathema_Device

In! Absolutely gorgeous. The dress is fierce and delicate at the same time. The hair looks a bit too casual in these pics, but it worked well last night. It was soft and feminine, which I thought offset the boldness of the dress nicely.

  • LOOOOVE this. IN.

  • chloemerchant

Totally in! I thought this was one of the best looks of the night.

  • BayTampaBay

IN because it is the best I have ever seen her look. However, the dress is wearing her.

  • Is this even a question?! IN, IN, IN, IN. It was my favorite look of the night.

  • evelina lundmark

IN, though the dress is very much wearing her.

  • marilyn

Out.  That is a dress for a much older woman.  The gold on the torso makes her look thick through the middle, even though she is not.  I did not like the hair.  It was too schoolgirl-ish for this evening look.  The gold and black of the dress overpowered her fair and delicate coloring.

    • grouchywif

      I agree on all points.
This dress looks heavy and like it is dragging her down. All that detail-work on the hips makes it look like she’s too short for the dress or something…it makes her look short and a little dumpy. I love her hair and make-up, but I feel that it is not the hair and make-up for this dress. This dress is regal and she’s got flowy “chiffon ballgown” hair. Fairy outfit hair, not evil queen hair. This is an evil queen dress.

I don’t like the black and gold with her coloring, either. The yellow in the gold trim fights with her coloring, I think. And that bust…the bust on this dress is not flattering at all. I’m not sure if it is the fit or just the way it is cut, but it doesn’t do a thing for her figure.

I’m pretty surprised so many people like this on her. It isn’t a disaster, but I don’t feel like this is the right kind of look for her at all. Maybe the whole demure, chin down thing is distracting me, too. Anyone wearing this dress needs to put her hand on her hip, raise her chin up, pull her hair up and sell the shit out of it.

  • lrhoff

Definite “in” from here — lovely!!

  • MK03

    IN. LOVE IT.

  • Yulie29

The dress is indeed wearing her, but it’s impressive nonetheless. An IN, but it was close. The fit decided it.

  • IN. My fave

  • IN. One of my favorites of the night. I gasped when she first came on-screen and cheered that she FINALLY pulled it all together for the Oscars.

  • The hair could use a little more volume, but she is stunning. IN

  • ChristinaRi

    Oh, I think IN.

Her hair is a bit messy for that dress though.  I don’t think “bed hair” goes with such a regal dress.   Maybe they were going for contrasts or something, but it didn’t work for me.

But showing up in such a fabulous dress rates a definite IN.

  • newleaf1

One of the best of the night.  Very beautiful.  Hair is a bit prom but definitely IN!

  • In.
I don’t necessarily like the dress, but I can admit she looks great and it suits her.

  • Jessica Mann Gutteridge

Love the dress, the makeup is pretty, but her hair is horrible. It looks limp and tangled and like she threw in a clip to pull it back before running out to get the newspaper.

  • And can I say? I covet those earrings.

  • kentiesgirl

The dress is wearing her, but IN! Perfect coloring, makeup is magnifico..her eyes are really popping and I so heart the hair. Love the train, and the detail at the bust is much better up close than at first glance.

  • In. She looks terrific.

  • dress_up_doll

I totally straight-girl gasped when I saw this last night. She looks phenomenal!

  • UNABASHED IN. I said the other week that the McQueen she wore just wasn’t HER McQueen. This is. 100%. She looked GLORIOUS.

  • homespunner

    In. Simply beautiful.

  • RroseSelavy

A giant butterfly has swallowed her hips. OUT.

  • Aly Light

I think the hair’s all wrong, but otherwise I call it a clear IN.

  • zelavie

    IN – she looks lovely!

  • Lori

In.  WERQ.  And this is another one of those looks that when you see it on the RC and inside the theatre it reminds you how little justice still photos do to many of the looks.

  • Ennovi_R

  • again soo soo IN! best dressed for me

  • This was my favorite, I think. IN.

  • Kyle Perron

IN, IN, IN!  Definitely did the gay gasp as well, and then subjected everyone attending my party to a lecture on her unfortunate red carpet choices this season and why that made this look so wonderful!  Would have considered this a for-sure WERQ!

  • Harmony Scofield

I thought she looked gorgeous (and she was sweet and funny and endearing in every interview I saw her give — very down to earth). Such an improvement over her red carpet style all season, and a really stunning grown-up look without being aging. IN.

  • Loved this look.   Loved the hair style; I just wish it hadn’t been so wispy looking.  Makeup is great, and the dress is beauitful and regal.  Perfect for the Oscars.  I’d give her an IN, along with a comb.

  • littlelistmaker

This is a flawless dress, she looks amazing in it. I’ve never even seen her in a movie but I thought she was absolutely best dressed last night.

  • beebee10

  • Lauren Frankel

    IN! This dress is GORGEOUS.

  • There’s no way I put this dress down as anything but an IN. She’s not really contributing much, though.

  • Totally and completely IN! She looked beautiful last night.

  • IN. The Help ladies BROUGHT IT last night.

  • Shoelover1512

IN! Loved this on her. I thought she looked great. And she looked like she FELT great in it, and it’s that the most important part?

  • tvmovielover

IN-no matter if it is wearing her or she is wearing it.  The women of The Help that I saw last night did very well.

  • Daniel Hoerner

Girl has been sandbagging all season…which sounds a lot dirtier than it should/I intended. Regardless — IN.

  • Pupioso

I say IN on this one. She looks great in it. the overlay is a bit much around the waist area but it’s not a design killer. IN all the way.

  • lalahartma

It is too much dress for her, but it has grown on me and it is such an improvement that I must say: ‘in.’

  • NurseEllen

Love the dress, striking and different, even as it skirts close to the edge of resembling the brocade on a Napoleonic era couch.  What I dislike is the “bump it” in her hair–I know the idea is to give a look of volume to someone who has thin, fine hair, but it’s SO obvious.  Plus it makes her head look misshapen.  But overall, a great look.  Definitely IN.

  • guestela

    in, bien sur

  • Cathy S

    Agreed. She’s In.

  • Olggie

    GOR-GEOUS! In!

  • In!  Though I do love the comment about Faberge Egg meets Rorschach testing.  Too funny!

  • In, I LOVED it.

  • Gayer_Than_Thou

Dressing for the red carpet is not something they teach at Juilliard. And I don’t mean that sarcastically.  There are a number of things about being a movie star that you just have to learn the hard way.

  • I love McQueen but it looks so cheap on her.

  • Vaniljekjeks

    WERQ!  That dress is gorgeous!

And it’s nice to see someone who is not Angelina Jolie wear black on the red carpet.  (On a side note, I think Angelina  looked awful and manic and like she had a horrid cramp in her thigh).

  • ThaliaMenninger

Totally IN. I thought she looked lovely.

  • Sara__B

IN. I expected her to be one of the night’s worst dressed, so this was a lovely surprise. Yes, the dress is wearing her, but until she acquires some posing skill and brings energy and confidence her red carpet appearances, this will do.

  • In. Love!

  • Caaro3

  • AthenaJ

In for such a lovely dress. I just wish she were owning it a bit more to pull of such a regal looking garment. Chin UP, shoulders BACK, Jessica!!

  • I also say IN. The hair and makeup are better than she manages a lot of the time too!

  • fiestyfashionfem

    IN – She looks lovely.

  • DinaSews

    IN!  Love the detailing.

  • vmcdanie

In. She really looks stunning here and so happy. The dress doesn’t excite me but it looks good on her and does it’s job.

  • janetjb

One of the best last night.

  • EliseC

    Brava.  Totally IN.

  • Jennifer L.

The first thing my husband said is “It looks like she’s wearing drapes.”

  • mhleta

No. Rococo window dressing. But see that cobalt ditty over her right shoulder in the fourth photo? I’d like to see her in that.

  • bluefish

IN.  The gold embroidery on the black looks like the exquisite bead and thread work one sees in Kashmir.  She looked beautiful last night.  Just right around the bust and waist and the added benefit of both legs kept under skirt!  Beautiful hair and makeup too.

  • IN.

For all the rage Rooney Mara’s wet tissue dress inspired in me, Ms. Chastain gave me cause for a very happy sigh of relief, especially after all your recent posts about some of her past mistakes. The only issue I have with it is the way the boning of the bodice cuts into her boobs/chest/armpits/whatever that area is on a woman. I don’t know if there’s any helping it, but it was distracting to me and was the only thing that kept the overall look from being totally flawless.

  • BazoDee

IN!!! (even if she does look like she borrowed someone else’s dress)

  • Lauren Maier

    IN!  She looks lovely.  🙂

  • Kimbolina

IN!  Probably my favorite of the night.  Reminds me of damascene jewelry from Toledo, Spain.  Love it!

  • Larkin21

I actually don’t *love* the dress but I can’t deny how flattering it looks on her. Love the hair and make-up too. IN!

  • IN. It was my favorite dress of the night. BUT I think the hair needed to be more va-va-voom. it looks a little limp.

  • funkypeanut

Doesn’t she look like prom! Buffy in the first pic? I could have sworn that that was Sarah Michelle Gellar ten years ago.

    • PeggyOC

Yes!  I thought the same thing.

  • PeggyOC

I can’t put my finger on what’s off about it. The dress is fabulous.  Perhaps I hate the yoga hair, with the little tendrils that are very close to cocker spaniel hair.  Or the very very low key makeup (I’m sure she’s wearing some, but it doesn’t look it).  Maybe it’s her posture.  Her posture tends to be a little slouch shouldered, which never sells the dress.  I can’t go so far as a full out, but it’s just not as awesome as it could be.

  • Stefanie Mackenzie

I hetero gasped when I saw this. IN as shit. I was on the phone with my daughter when she strolled by and I said it looks like someone stole one of QE1 dresses from the V&A and reworked it. No huge surprise to find out its an Alexander McQueen. LOVE IT.

  • IN

  • mhlmh

meh. I’m on the fence so I’ll be generous and say IN

  • aristida_girl

IN..I like this dress, and it suits her well…

  • IN, clearly! I thought she was top 3 for best-dressed last night.

  • sagecreek

    In. She looks wonderful.

  • CharmaineCropper

IN! One of my faves of the night!

  • ChaquitaPhilly

Super IN! Loved it when they first just showed to look above the waist and REALLY loved it when the finally got to a full-length view. It’s Spectacular, Spectacular!

  • j_anson

    IN. It’s lovely.

  • In! She looks great. One of my favorite looks of the evening.

  • Amanda Entwistle

    Definitely IN!

  • nannypoo

Are you kidding me? Why is this not a WERQ? She looked fabulous.

  • nancymae

    So IN.

  • IN. Gorgeous. Best dressed of the night. Hands down.

  • filmcricket

IN. Love it, head to toe.

  • howdoilook

It’s the Oscars. No dress is too big, or else where would they wear them? Total IN!

  • howdoilook

    too much* rather.

  • In in IN! Perfect amount of drama and gold for the Oscars. Compare this to Meryl – honestly, she was DRESSED like a female embodiment of the little gold man!

  • butterflysunita

IN.  The dress is a little busy, but she looks great–the best I’ve ever seen her look.

  • IN, and I want all of it.  That may even be my new hair color, we have the same skin/eyes.

  • GTrain

I didn’t love it when I saw it on TV last night but she looks really good here. IN.

  • Emily Roach

In, and there probably won’t be much of a contest on this one….

  • GorgeousThings

I have to vote OUT. It’s about 2 inches longer in the torso than she is – it looks like it’s slicing into her armpits.

  • brookeinmn

IN. She looks great. The soft hair and makeup work perfectly with the bold dress. My only tiny complaint is how the top of the bodice is poking her underarms. For once I want to yank the dress down a little bit.

  • SneakyKitty

In, but the dress is most certainly wearing her.

  • The fit isn’t perfect but it is a gasp-worthy dress. IN.

  • IN!! She was my best dressed for the night. Plus she’s nice and sweet and seemed genuinely grateful/excited to be there (only made the get up even more beautiful!).

  • Lilithcat

Love the dress, love the jewelry, love the make-up.

The hair, on the other hand, looks as though she stood too close to the wind machine.

  • IN, she was my pick for best dressed of the night as soon as I saw her, and I didn’t see anyone else who measured up.  She looked amazing in the dress, and it works so well with her body and coloring. Perfect.

  • Corsetmaker

Gorgeous. The goldwork on that is stunning. It’s a little long on the body for her, but I can live with it 🙂 And I like her hair being fairly casual in contrast.

    • Corsetmaker

Oh yea, and a resounding IN!

  • Pants_are_a_must

The dress IS wearing her, but she looks pretty all the same. I don’t expect fierce miracles from fashion newbies. IN.

  • suz72350

    Fabulous! IN

  • JMansm

IN. And I LOVE those earrings.

  • I thought she looked fantastic – probably the best ever.  IN!

  • Carrie L. Boram

    So gorgey so IN!

  • LAjane81

    IN times a million!

  • gabbilevy

What a joke! Of COURSE she’s IN! Best she’s looked on the RC, full stop.

  • Stunning. IN.

  • EEKstl

At first I had a bad flashback to some upholstery gown that Beyonce wore eons ago, but this really grew on me and I give her a resounding IN.  And her hair and makeup are perfection.

  • SpcilK

    J’adore! she looks lovely.

  • it’s a beautiful dress on a pretty girl so it’s an IN, but there’s something I don’t like and I can’t seem to put my finger on it. Maybe it’s the yellowish tone of gold – it’s too dark and ochre-like – looks garish next to her skin and in my view it actually clashes with the redness of her hair. And the hair itself – it looks like Fairy Godmother spent all her mojo on the dress and just magically washed gal’s hair for the ball.

  • Vickiefantastico

I think I’m in the minority here, but when I first saw this on her, I did NOT gasp for joy. I think the color’s way too dark on her and the top of the dress doesn’t fit. Side boob spilling out of a dress never looks good. So…OUT

  • Noelle Haland

    In! Dramatic and lovely.

  • Sasha Jamison

I think she looks amazing! IN! Finally!

  • MilaXX

    IN she looks very pretty

  • In.

  • chelwi

IN. She looks amazing. Especially in that back angle. LOVE the hair too.

  • WritingWonder

I agree. IN.  I’m not raving over it the way the commentators were last night because it does seem to be wearing her. But it’s a very pretty look and her hair, makeup and earrings were just right.  VERY pretty.

  • deathandthestrawberry

Love it. One of the best dressed of the night. IN!

  • An enthusiastic In! I love this look.

  • IN!  Love it!!

  • Joyce VG

    She looks wonderful. IN.

  • Love, love, love.

  • lucasuk82

In. Beautiful. I think a lot of people are scarred from ’80s sweaters, but black with gold beading is so lux and elegant.

  • VioletFem

IN. She looks amazing. Love how dramatic the dress looks from the back.

  • So IN!

  • sweetestsith

In! The hair looks a little droopy from straight on, but when you see the other angles it works. The back shot is fucking beautiful. Love.

  • KaileeM

IN for me! I think she looks gorgeous. I really love the hair. So, so pretty.

  • elleg929

I had her as one of my best dressed of the night.  IN!

  • IN! One of the best dressed at the Oscars!

  • TheOriginalLulu

This is definitely a personal best for her. IN!

  • I’ve been waiting all day for you to comment on this because she was my favorite all time person on the red carpet last night.  I gasped myself when I saw her.  Definitely IN!

  • Diego!

This is a WERQ it girl! MEGA IN.
    She looks stunning!

  • carpediva

Way IN.  Hair & makeup look flawless, and while that IS  a lot of dress, the overall effect is stunning.  Best she’s ever looked.

  • peggylarner

She looks amazing! Like a delicious art deco lady. One of my favorites of the night.

  • mozzer0906

    IN, she looks great.

  • kcarb1025

  • altalinda

    Agree, that’s in.  Beautiful dress.

  • BuffaloBarbara

This is a GREAT look.    Wish she’d done something as fabulous with her hair, but the dress is too awesome to give anything but an IN.

  • annaplurabelle

    I’m IN for this.

  • DinahR

IN!  I think she looks great and totally agree about the coloring.

  • IN.  Just glorious.

  • O.U.T.

I love the dress, but the dress was wearing her. Her hair was too casual for the look and her makeup too soft. She needed more of a polished hairdo, like a side bun or something. Also, a more dramatic lip would have served her nicely in that dress.

Now, had Cate Blanchett been wearing that dress, she would have WERQed the hell out of it

  • IN. The hair should’ve been pinned up, but everything else is working pretty well here.

  • Haley Buchanan

IN.  It’s unique and dramatic.  Not a dress for every occasion, but surely one for an Academy Award nominee at the Academy Awards.  Plus the bodice fits well and the gold/black combo is great on her.

  • crash1212

IN. IN. IN. Stunning. Full stop.

  • OUT! This would have been good on Penelope Cruz.  It’s ridiculous on her.

  • CatherineRhodes

IN. (She got robbed of a WERQ.)

  • ringthing

In. She finally pulled it together and not a minute too soon.

  • another_laura

    IN.  Nothing more to say.

  • DominoEstella

    IN!  Gorgeous!

  • IN. Interesting, stunning…she looks lovely.

  • In. She was my favorite of the night.

  • IN.

  • Gene Hult

She looks beautiful.  IN.  And I think she and Christina Hendricks should play sisters at some point.

  • Spicytomato1

IN. I’d say the dress is teetering on the brink of wearing her, but not quite. She pulled it off. Makeup is beautiful and although the center part in her hair bugs me a bit her hair looks pretty, too.

I agree that these are her colors, however, if she sticks with them I fear people will then accuse her of getting stuck in an Oscar-style rut.

  • deliadee

She looks wonderful, the colors really suit her.  IN!

  • Pterodactyl111

  • SapphoPoet

    IN. Simply stunning.

  • Louise Bryan

I think she looked great everytime I saw her.  IN!

  • IN.  loved it from the moment I saw it!

  • My favourite look of the night bar none! I love it. IN!

  • LongTall_Sally

IN, and possibly the best look of the night.

  • StrandedFashionista

Mot my favorite look on her. She looked better in that blue Calvin  Klein. As a redhead, I think black washes us out as a whole. OUT.

  • fnarf

Of COURSE it’s an in. The only better dress last night was Ellie Kemper’s.

  • kimmeister

    An unequivocal IN!

  • Spectacular! In!

  • leave_Blake_alone

    For sure IN. Werq-worthy, even.

  • Dress is alright but her hair looks a mess to me. I give it a half-hearted IN.

  • Amy Ellinger

IN!  She was in my top 5 best-Dressed

  • Embroidery detail on the bodice works really well.  On the train it looks muddled from a distance, which reads more as good intentions rather than a workable choice.  Is it practical to follow her around closely enough to see if it’s embroidery or ill-planned beading?

  • I thought she was THE best dressed woman there last night. In.

  • alyce1213

It’s a lot of dress.  Maybe a bit too much for Jessica, but I really love it, so IN.

I know she’d never go strapless, but I wish Meryl Streep had worn something embellished and a bit over-the-top like this because she has the “weight” (not in lbs) to carry it.

  • IN. Love. Perfection. So glad she pulled it together for Oscar night.

  • Tracy_Flick

IN! My only complaint is the black line that the design forms seems to be hitting about an inch too high on the bust.

  • Zippypie

It is definitely wearing her.  I’m gasping at the dress, not her.  Not a good thing for Oscar night.  I should be paying attention to the woman looking fab in the dress, not the dress looking fab on the woman.

  • in!!

  • DeborahLipp

In! This is a WERQ for me; one of my 3 or 4 favorites of the night.

  • Very good, probably the best of the lot.  I think the shape of the beading on the front hip is a bit heavy, but it’s absolutely perfect in the back.  The eye is so drawn to the bodice that she should have worn more dramatic jewelry to lead it back to her face.  It’s a very Aubrey Beardsley gown.

  • cindybeeintex

IN! Manages to be elegant and pretty at the same time.

  • In!

  • SVLynn

In, my favorite of the night.

  • mstzilla

IN! This is a gorgeous dress (wish I could wear it!) and she looks wonderful in it. I never thought she was that attractive until I saw her in this dress – she can look gorgeous!

  • There’s something about the gold design on the front of the dress that seems a bit off, the back design is gorgeous.  But overall, it’s so striking, IN.

  • IN. I just don’t like how she keeps tucking her chin in photos. She has a gorgeous face, serve it to the camera!

  • AlexisPayne

    Brava, she looks stunning. IN!

  • Not just IN – PERSONAL BEST.

    • 3boysful

Absolutely!!  I also gasped when I realized it was her.  And I kinda wanted her to win.

  • I gasped when I saw her. She looked spectacular. IN!

  • Of course IN ! Dress is gorgeous, I love that black and rich gold embroidery, plus hair and make-up look fresh. You did it Jessica !

  • In!

  • demidaemon

I like this dress in theory, but the way the trim around her waist seems to emphasize her vagina is distracting me. OUT.

  • Emmyllou

    STUNNING. So very In.

  • Elizabeth Wiggs Maas

Le sigh…I thought you would feature this as a WERQ. I love it. One thing that makes me sad is her hair – I thought it looked amazing last night on t.v., but the style doesn’t seem to photograph so well. It doesn’t look bad in photos, just not as wonderful as it did in motion. And how cute was she when she nuzzled her grandma as they read her name for Best Supporting Actress nominee?

  • Michael_Jones

    Absolute IN.  I love this.

  • Lauren Thomas

IN! She looks gorgeous, total movie star.

  • Lilak

Gee, TLo … I thought she was probably the best of the night!

And “the dress wore her”??  She looked like a lovely, happy young woman feeling particularly beautiful and at ease in a gorgeous McQueen.

Just dreamy. (I’m still smiling over this today.)

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

IN.  One of my fave looks of the night.

  • in!  I think it’s wonderful. The dress is a tad long for her, but I can overlook that on something so fab!

  • msdamselfly

    In She looked great

  • annieanne

IN. She finally got it right.

  • IN! she looks stunning.

  • amian3

I don’t understand how this isn’t a WERQ. She looks amazing head to toe.

  • I love it!!!

  • formerlyAnon

That is a glorious dress (especially from the back) so she gets an IN for being the ambulatory dress form.

From the back it’s a definite IN, front view I am more hesitant (both the dress & the hair look better to me from the back) but still in.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

gorgeous dress. top fits a little weird but the dress is so fabulous it’s beyond easy to forget that.

  • TSkot

IN, but the fit has some problems where boob meets armpit.

  • PhillipWilde

I don’t love the hair, but the dress is fabulous. IN.

  • oohsparkley!

    In. She look stunningly beautiful.

  • Maddie_Faddenoid

If ever a werq was deserved it’s right here. Big fat IN.

  • In.  Just.  Now she needs to channel her inner Tilda and WORK that shit.

  • NasserShaheen

In. I’d rather see some werqing from her as this dress is begging her to be more fierce but damn, that dress is gorge and she looks beautiful here, well done.

  • R. L.

    Gorgeous!  Definitely IN.

  • benjamin478

that can’t be anything but an IN, although the dress does seem like its wearing her somewhat

  • KathKo

    Definitely an In.
    She looks regal.
Yes, she might let the dress do all the work, but at least she doesn’t stand in the way !

  • Andrea Moore

In! This was absolutely my favorite dress of the night. That everyone was cooing over that bewildering thing Michelle Williams was wearing and forgetting Jessica after she left the screen distresses me greatly.

  • Gorgeous dress, but it was definitely giving her some fat rolls around her armpits and back. She doesn’t look like a girl who could muster a fat roll, but they were there. Also, the hair was a little half-assed. Overall, though, it was one of the most striking looks from the Oscars and she looked gorgeous and confident. IN.

  • random_poster

  • pdquick

The hair is OUT. This dress really called for a soft, elegant up-do. But the dress is so spectacular on its own merits, and it’s so right for her, that it’s IN. By a country mile. Even with the hair.

  • SatelliteAlice

The hair is kind of sad but the rest is lovely. In.

  • Candigirl1968

In. Amazing dress.  Needs stronger makeup though. Not getting her and Viola with the statement dresses and nearly nude faces.

  • charlotte

Amazing dress! Totally in. Hair is a bit flimsy though.

  • k op

Yes!  So very IN!  She still needs to learn how to pose on the carpet, but what a remarkable improvement!   It looks like she gets it, too – much more comfortable in this dress and knows she looks smashing.

  • greyhoundgirl

Beautiful and romantic without carrying her away–she’s wearing it, on someone else it would be wearing her.  In.

  • S R

IN. So much IN, this is a WERQ for me.

  • IN!!!! It’s stunning – my favorite look of the night!

  • girliecue

IN! Yay! Pitch-perfect from head to toe.

  • Love the dress, but too too much for the wearer. Out. Sadly. It needs a woman with more presence and, maybe, even a few more years on her.

  • I LOVE that dress. She may not be WERQing it to perfection, but she’s still IN in my book.

  • IN.

  • berkeleygirl

Incredible! Totally disagree that the dress was wearing her… E! had a shot of her greeting fans in the bleachers.  She was so loose, open and natural, she could have been meeting friends in a t-shirt and jeans. Absolutely zero pretension – made me think, along with her talent, no wonder everyone wants to work with her…

That she brought her grannie to the Oscars – from whom she clearly got her red hair – spoke volumes…

  • I really love her hair and make up this time.

  • turtleemily

This is the youngest I think I’ve seen her look with her hair and face all soft and pretty.

  • Pinup Ghoul

Look at her lovely complexion! She must have stock in Coppertone, because she looks flawless!

The dress is very pretty, but maybe a tad overstated for her age. Even so, she looks so gorgeous! ABSOLUTE IN.

  • kolokOlchik

She’s definitely IN.  Another dress that Nina and Tim really liked yesterday

  • jmw1122

IN. She’s my pick for best dressed of the night, she looks positively stunning. Particularly her hair.

  • Brava, darling!! IN, a thousand times in!

  • One of my favorites of the night (along with Octavia and Milla).  IN!

  • joything

I think it’s kinda perfect. IN.

  • BeeBeauNYC

I give her an IN just because that dress is crazy fucking fantastic! I don’t love her hair here, and as a fellow ginger I’m not sure this dress is the right color on her, especially with the gold. Still, that dress is so amazing.

  • IN

  • Elias Pineda

january jones in golden globes last year

  • ccm800

    IN especially for her.

  • Thathoodwink

I think she looks beautiful; the only problem I have with the dress is that the top portion, with the way the motif is arranged, kind of looks like a ribcage with lungs….you get what I mean.

  • IN

  • thebitterkitten

She was totally cute when talking to Ryan Seacrest with her Nana…I think she looks great. IN!

  • eruannalle

IN as hell. Gorgeous dress that looks stunning on her, and I think this is the prettiest I’ve ever seen her hair & makeup.  Love everything about this look.

  • Geno Boggiatto

    Oh so oh so IN!!!!!!

  • Totally IN!  Loved this look on her.  Would love to see it in person to see if looks equally good IRL.

  • CherBearBlue

NO IDEA why this is up for debate. WERQ GURL! IN!

  • LittleKarnak

Out!!! I thought her mom date looked better than she did!!

  • Lisa

IN!!!  The brocade was a teeeeensy bit on the heavy side, just by the slightest, but not enough to really quibble over.  She looked amazing!~

  • Totally in – one of my favorite dresses this year.

  • margaret meyers

In.  She looked good and she got noticed.  That’s the end game.  It doesn’t matter if the dress is wearing her a little bit.

  • IN. She looks uncharacteristically great. 🙂

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

IN! Praise be, she’s been listening.

  • Maluca

STUNNING. I am in intense love with this dress. And it’s the best she’s ever looked. RESOUNDING IN!

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

IN IN IN.  She turned it around and she really turned it out, and she very nearly pulled of a really adventurous McQueen.  She gets a solid A- even without a grading curve for effort.

  • In, the design on the dress is so beautiful and she wears it well.

  • bringbackbeatles

IN…I love everything about this! She looked amazing!

  • saanrio

     IN.  Absolutely stunning.

  • TieDye64

    IN. Finally.

  • In.  I especially think her hair was gorgeous.

  • Elena

    Completely, completely IN.

  • quiltrx

IN.  How did I not see this last night?  Gorgeous dress, and she looks great in it.

  • Brenna McClellan

IN IN IN IN. This and Emma Stone are tied for my favorite.

  • Donna Schmidt

  • loverungay

I agree – she looks FABULOUS!

  • up with pod people

In, glorious in. I recognized the McQueen fantasy forest embroidery on sight and I will never stop loving it.

  • I love the dress!  I’m not sure if I’m digging the hair with it, but I think she looks gorgeous.  IN.

  • Emily Scott

IN! She looks terrific and you could tell she loved wearing it.

  • Evelina Chang

In! The dress is amazing, and she is working it.

  • She looks great. IN.

  • So very much IN! In fact, this was my favorite dress of all from that night.

  • mila_8

I’d say filigrees with her:) In!

  • marywv

  • Stunning gown– beautiful and incredibly flattering to her coloring.  I think her hair product failed her, though– it doesn’t look too bad in the last pic (I’m guessing that was taken earlier?), but in the others it’s a straggly mess.

  • Fellas. I don’t get it. This is one of the best dresses I ever saw.

  • NCDFan

    Definitely IN. Very striking.

  • pokokpuding

Minor issues with the snake-like tendrils of the hair, but otherwise IN.

  • IN. she looked stunning on television

  • crackineggs

My favorite look of the night.  Totally IN.

  • PeaceBang

  • DebbieLovesShoes

    LOVE.  So very, very IN.

  • AWStevens

TLo crazy?  No freaking way!  Word to yer mutha!

  • amanda crow

IN! One of my favorites of the night! T and Lo, I’m only calling you crazy for not giving this girl a WERQ!

  • jane_bloggs

IN IN IN IN IN IN IN!!!!!!  Are explanations really necessary?

  • Not WERQing it because the dress IS wearing her. But she’s looking good. IN.

  • warontara

In! I can’t decide if stronger makeup (a nice smokey eye or bright lip) would add some of the needed POW to her look or been too much.

  • Grace Ritt

IN IN IN IN IN IN IN. The hair really helps out. She’s never looked better.

  • DesertDweller79

The dress is indeed wearing her, but she looks great, so I vote IN.  Cate Blanchett can seemingly wear McQueen with little effort.  But, on most people the McQueen dresses seem to be wearing them.

  • fashionablylate

    IN. Fabulous dress!

  • IN.

  • IN. I have some quibbles, though. I feel like it’s a bit too much dress for her – not a lot too much, mind. Just *slightly* too much. I just got so excited that her head looked so good that not it doesn’t bother me so much, though. Great color combo for her, and she needs to keep these hair & makeup gays.

  • hearkentoit

No idea who this girl is, but she looks cute as hell. Love the hair and makeup. IN.

  • Anonymoth

Absolutely beautiful. No critiques here. IN.

  • Anonymoth

Absolutely beautiful. No critiques here. IN.

    Best she’s ever looked. IN.

  • tsid2012

Definitely a huge improvment so i will give her an IN.  But yes, that dress is wearing her…..

  • IN.  She looks great!

  • Susan Crawford

Definitely an IN, and let’s hope this is the start of Jessica’s New Look! (I do agree that McQueen is so powerful that it takes a fashion pro to handle the drama, and Jessica isn’t QUITE there yet, but this is a really good, bold step.) Go, Jessica!

  • Yoga hair, y’all. I’m disappointed in you both.

  • mrssage

LOVE this dress. and good for her for finally wearing something exciting.

  • MissAnnieRN

IN without question my best dressed of the night.

  • IN. So gorgeous.

  • amywinns

MOVIE STAR. In. I just wish she looked more confident and proud. She seems a wee bit intimidated by her dress. Maybe it’s just humility… a virtue anywhere but Hollywood.

  • Jessica O’Connell

It’s like she’s a whole different person! IN!

  • Snailstsichr

She really brought it! Love it.

  • Thought this was one of the WORST looks of the night. The pattern is just too overwhelming. It looks like repurposed fabric from one of Adrienne Malouf’s living room chairs. But the worst grievance is the extremely poor fit. It was pulling up oddly at the bodice. She just looked very uncomfortable.

  • IN, she looks amazing! What a stunning dress!

  • kmc1138

This was BY FAR my favorite dress of the night.  With all due respect to the folks who don’t like it – to me not liking this dress is like telling me you’ve invented a new number.  I simply do not get it.  I think when I saw her on screen I actually did an “oooooooooh, look at thaaaaaaat . . . ”  Love it!

  • Sophie Collier

IN, especially for that last photo.  LOVE….

  • Patricia Clements

  • lisarati

As soon as I saw this dress on screen, I commented that the design is basically pointing an arrow to her crotch. OUT!

  • AnimalsAreTheBest

In retrospect, this probably should have been a WERQ.
