NAACP Image Awards Red Carpet

Posted on February 20, 2012

Darlings, we’re trying to come up with a play on the word “color” simply because this red carpet was awash in it, but alas, there is no way to do it without sounding stupid. Suffice it to say, the looks were classic and colorful – and (almost) everyone turned it OUT.

Adepero Oduye

We liked her hair better when she was rocking the ‘fro at Fashion Week. Nice dress, but nothing earth-shattering.

Alfre Woodard

Fabulous color on her.

Amber Riley in Theia

Oh Miss Amber, you make us so proud.

Anika Noni Rose in Toujouri

Sweetie, your dress is a little cray, but we think it works on you. It’s your hair that’s making you look like a topiary.

Anthony Mackie

Ohhhhhhh, you could have been PERFECT if you’d just buttoned your jacket. You must be overcome with regret now, Anthony.

Archie Panjabi in Hervé L. Leroux

Also a great color. The gowns here tended toward these sleek, classic looks rendered in fabulous colors. That’s not a bad way for a red carpet to go.

Corey Reynolds

Nothing fits and your tie is crooked.

Damon Wayans Jr.

He’s adorable, but it’s disconcerting how much he looks like his father, who’s a lot closer to our age. Could’ve used a fitting on that jacket.

Garcelle Beauvais

From this angle, the top doesn’t look that flattering but we love this look. We love the idea of stripes on the RC.

Jill Scott

WOW. You are WERQing what god gave you, girl.

Kenny Lattimore

No man wearing this is going to look like anything but a parking valet.

Lenny Kravitz

At some point, it’s all going to hit him at once. He’ll wake up one day, try to put an outfit like this on, and the universe will finally smack him down and say, “Enough. You’re like 60.”

Michelle Williams

Simple but pretty.

KILLA look. LOVE this. But the pants need a slight hem.

Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji

She looks adorable.

Regina King in Romona Keveza

Clearly working on those arms in preparation for the inevitable portrayal of Michelle Obama.

Sandra Oh

Hate the hair and the shoes look a little dominatrix-y paired with that dress.

Tamera Mowry-Housley in Nicole Miller and Tia Mowry Hardrict in BCBG Max Azria

Every time we happen to land on their awful  reality show, we always stop and stare in silence. After a few minutes, one of us will inevitably say “Why?”

We feel the same about their dresses.

Taraji P. Henson in Randi Rahm

Vanessa Williams

Miss Lady is serving it UP and all you other ladies can just clear the red carpet, now.

  • I love Taraji and Ms Jill Scott is working me out.

    • Yes! Those two were my favorites, but I have to admit, there was a lot to love on this RC.

      • Judih1

Those were my two favorite and I will also add Vanessa Williams. Miss Jill Scott is shows us that you don’t have to be a size 2 to look fab on the red carpet

  • MK03

Does Tamera’s dress have HOLES in it??

    • Looks like the bottom was mauled by a dog.

    • Kayceed

I don’t think “distressed” is ever a good red carpet look.

    • Looks like she got in a girl fight on the way there and someone repeatedly stabbed her dress with stilettos. BAD.

  • Zaftiguana

All I can think of when I look at that picture of Jill Scott is, “No excuse, Christina!”

Amber Riley wins this round, though. And so glad to see Octavia looking a bit happier at these events.

  • I am particularly struck by the interesting stylishness of the men on the RC. Apart from some fitting issues, most of them look mi-tee-fine. Ne-Yo, gimme that jacket, like, NOW.

    • Sobaika Mirza

I have to say it: Men of color are much more open to appearing stylish.

      •  They certainly are. Except for the openly gay contingent of the male pop.

        • Which is good until you get to over-styled gays like Adam Lambert, ehh

          •  Oh so true, Amelia. I live and work in the Castro district in San Francisco, and you couldn’t possibly be more right.  I see a lot of very stylish men, and a lot of people who seem to have no off switch when it comes to their piling the stuff on and accessorizing to death.  Mr. Glambert, is a prime case in point.

          •  Awww, I think the overly styled gays should be in their own completely separate category, but I still love it!  They’re like the Dolly Parton/Cher male equivalent–how can you NOT love it???

          •  I think perhaps, you must be right!

          •  Awww, I think the overly styled gays should be in their own completely separate category, but I still love it!  They’re like the Dolly Parton/Cher male equivalent–how can you NOT love it???

      • My husband sometimes regrets not being a man of colour – he’d love to be able to rock a purple velvet jacket without looking like Liberace.

      • MilaXX

YES! I’m watching Wendy Williams as I type this and Taye Diggs is on looking all kinds of fine!

      • MilaXX

YES! I’m watching Wendy Williams as I type this and Taye Diggs is on looking all kinds of fine!

  • Cathy S

I love Vanessa Williams but today, Taraji P. Henson wins the internet. Fantastic!

    • Terrie_S

Her dress makes me think of Spiderman, but in a good way. Sort of “Of course I look awesome. I’m a superhero!”

  • Tamera’s dress looks like it ripped in places getting out of the limo.

  • Patricia Gillett

Feeling sorry for all these other ladies because Amber Riley SHUT. IT. DOWN. Love her look.  And Archie Panjabi looks regal, that’s the only word for it.

I adore Regina King but she’s going to need to borrow Sandra Oh’s shoes if she hopes to play Shelley O. Regina is what, 5’5″?

    • Google says, 5’3″ so she’ll need something like Hobbit technology reversed 🙂

      • That’s what they did for Gandalf. 🙂

Actually it’s quite common for short actors to stand on boxes out of shot.

        • She can stand on five boxes but she wont’ be able to pull off being Shelly O. Garcelle has a better chance than Regina.

          • MilaXX

She hasn’t done much lately but Angela Bassett is still in good form and could pull off portraying Shelly O.

          •  Viola Davis has the arms to pull it off as well.

          •  Viola Davis has the arms to pull it off as well.

          • MilaXX

She hasn’t done much lately but Angela Bassett is still in good form and could pull off portraying Shelly O.

    • NC_Meg

      Agreed. Amber never looked better.

    • megohd

      Hi Pattie. 🙂

And had the same thought about Regina King!

  • Carleenml

just look at Vanessa’s face. Perfection.

  • BazoDee

OMG -nailed it with the Regina King working towards Mrs. O arms!!
Everyone looks fun and fresh. The color is so refreshing after what seems like eons of flesh toned neutrals.
I’ve read that red carpet fashions (from length, to color to skirt fullness) reflect the current economic trending. OR maybe they are just on the same cycle -whatever it is – I am happy to have the return of such vibrant colors.

    • You *know* neutrals are done on the RC cuz they just showed up at Macy’s here in fly-over country.

      • lol I’m waiting for the cute 60s inspired styles to show up in 2 years. 🙂

  • Vaniljekjeks

Jill Scott proves that you CAN fit a bra and a dress to huge boobs.  Just find the right size!!!!

    • She looks terrific. Hair looks great too.

  • Judy_J

Maybe it’s the lighting, but Tia Mowry’s dress looks like it’s stained at the hemline.  And the hem of her siste’s gown looks like it got caught in the car door.

  • Pants_are_a_must

But I wanted Viola Davis to play Michelle Obama. 🙁

    • DinaSews

SHE does have the arms, doesn’t she?

    •  I guess I should have read down further before I made the same comment. 🙂

  • crash1212

    Taraji P. FTW. Just….WOW!

    • SRQkitten

I agree! In a room fulla fierce, she really brought it!

  • Pants_are_a_must

The ladies mostly look stunning, though. The men are marred by the presence of Lenny Kravitz and whatever the hell he thinks he’s dressed as.

    •  Gotta say, his look is getting mighty old for me now.  He needs to move it along a bit.

      • I guess it’s his schtick now, but part of me wishes he could have tried to dress it up a little at least. Even Johnny Depp, RDJ, Helena Bonham-Carter all do formal, they just put their spin on it.

      •  I know you’re right, but such is the power of the Kravitz:  he never looks wrong or bad or hackneyed to me.

    • I usually love his crazy unisex outfits, but I wish he’d rustled up some crazy unisex formal wear.  He needs to call SWINTON for pointers.

    • From the waist up, he still looks good to me. (Can do without skinny legs on guys, esp skinny legs in skinny jeans TUCKED INTO boots.) But TLo are correct – he can maybe get a few more years out of this look, but one days he’s gonna wake up and it’s going to be, ‘enough already.’

Sorry, Lenny. Happens to all of us.

  • serenitynow02

Lenny looks so pretentiously silly compared with the other really hot, well-dressed dudes. I love that color on Octavia.

  • Candigirl1968

…..And narry a beige dress or nude shoe.

  • mshesterp

It’s been a while since I’ve seen such a well-dressed red carpet.  Finally!

I think that’s the best I’ve ever seen Amber look.I miss Jill Scott’s natural hair.  It was a lot more fun and sexy.  However, she is working her curves to maximum effect.  Taraji for the win…stunning indeed!

  • Aww, those twins look adorable. Don’t hate, celebrate!
Lenny, on the other hand…isn’t he like 60 already? He tires me, and you’d think he’d be tired too.

    • MilaXX

       nope Lenny’s in his 40’s

  • Amber Riley looks terrific. She is also dropping some serious weight the right way.

    • dress_up_doll

I don’t know what her goal is, but she looks all kinds of amazing at this weight.

  • Mariah J

    Amber Riley FTW!!

  • Y’know what? I’ve spent the last hour and a half working out trying desperately to lose what I feel is a terrible amount of weight. Every day I feel so horrible about myself because of my size, but then I come across something like this, where ladies of all sizes are celebrated for talent and still look stunning regardless of their figure.

TLo, thanks for posting this. Thanks for posting people of different shapes and sizes and showing what works and what doesn’t. Thanks for showing it’s not about how thin you are, but how you work what you have. Love you and thank you!

    • CrazyAuntie

Deborah, I totally agree!  I’m sick of seeing the same old boring people – most of whom are too skinny and plastic.  Print that picture of Jill Scott, hang it up and aspire to THAT!!!!!!!  Luv huh!!!!!

      • Thank you!

      • Rand Ortega

         Auntie ain’t so Crazy!
Kudos to you & your life affirming outlook!

        • CrazyAuntie

          Thanks honey!!

    • Kristen Williamson

This comment is all kinds of beautiful. <3

  • Lilithcat

No man wearing this is going to look like anything but a parking valet.

I disagree.  He could also be a cater waiter.

    • lovelyivy

Bartender, or selling popcorn at an olde tyme theater.

      • Kayceed

Or part of a barbershop quartet…

      • Rand Ortega

I was thinking ice cream parlor piano player.

  • gdougs

That’s the best Amber Riley has ever looked. Stunning! I love seeing women of color and women who have curves so this post was full of wins in my book.

  • DinaSews

Amber Riley for the win.  Vanessa Williams is beautiful and a class act.  You would never guess her age looking at her yet she is dressed so age appropriate.

  • imperfectlaura

Tamera’s dress didn’t get ripped.  It’s a purposeful “distressed” detail.  Yeah that’s right, instead of distressed jeans it’s a distressed dress.  I pray this doesn’t become an RC trend.

    • Rand Ortega

No matter how you slice (or explain) that dress… EW.

      • imperfectlaura

I agree with that.  I’d actually would’ve been more okay if this was some kind of accident.  The fact that a dress was distressed to look like this is disturbing to me.

  • Love the pocket in Michelle Wiliams’ dress…but Octavia FTW!!

    • Octavia had to do something great to make up for that horrible BAFTA outfit.

  • newleaf1

Besides winning in the style department, Amber Riley wins the smile award as well – sweet girl lights up a room with that smile.

  • Candice Richardson

Vanessa Williams for the mother effing win.

  • Love these looks

  • miwome

Is it just me, or has something happened to Sandra Oh’s face?

    • Terrie_S

Personally, I’m hoping it’s simply the angle of the photo that makes her looks so… squeezed around the middle.

  • Stefanos Mantyla

Sorry, but Ne-Yo looks like a douche, and always will so long as he insists on the pretentiously “ajar” hat look. Someone please tell him to stop doing that!

  • Pupioso

Love most of the ladies. The guys need some work.

  • What?…No Tracey Edmonds?

  • Diva is the word that comes to mind. Very enjoyable set of pictures.

  • Best Amber Riley has ever looked tbh.

  • turtleemily

The bottom of Tamera’s dress looks like she let her cat play with it.

  • Tia and Tamera are both kind of scroll-down fug.

  • boweryboy

Lenny Kravitz will never give up his look and will follow in the footsteps of other creepy aging rockers who can not give up the ghost: Steven Tyler.  Mick Jagger.  Keith Richards.

    •  My 8-year old son has been watching American Idol a little bit this year and he couldn’t believe that Steven Tyler was a man.

  • jenno1013

I wish Taraji had gone for more dramatic hair with her stunning dress.  She’s got a 6:00-o’clock-newscaster coiffure.

    • EEKstl

I was just going to write something very akin to that!  Spec-tacular dress, yawnfest hair.

  • Kayceed

Best use of serious foundation garments in action that I’ve seen in a long time. Well done ladies.

  • kingderella

none of these looks are to my taste. but almost all of them look really good, my very subjective criticism aside.

  • PeggyOC

Jill Scott’s stylist needs to cold call Christina Hendricks. That’s how you dress a chest.

  • mayah1806

    YES AMBER!!! WERQ!!!!

  • colleenjanel

An evening full of WIN for the big girls. As a fellow big girl, I couldn’t be prouder. Thank you Amber, Jill and Octavia for doin’ us proud!

  • Jessica Goldstein

Archi Panjabi wore my favorite dress–love that neckline. Jill Scott put on a clinic for how to dress her shape. Just  perfect. And Lenny, Lenny, Lenny…. He’d look so much better if he’d keep the core items and materials traditional and then have fun with accessories, shirt colors, or unexpected prints. Right now he just looks under-dressed and sad.

  • Anathema_Device

Many fabulous looks here, but my vote is for Henson for the win. Silvery, slinky, and sexy without being vulgar in the least.

  • Sandra Oh looks tiny in that dress but really uncomfortable. I don’t know if it’s just the angle of the photo, but her head looks HUGE.

  • CQAussie

SOOOOOO FAB.  Loved them all but especially Amber Riley and Taraji P. Henson.  Vanessa Williams was clearly in her diva mood which added to all of the fab =D

  • Alisa Rivera

I want to know where Jill Scott buys her bras. I’m a D-DD right now and I’m willing to drop a lot of coin for a bra that can get my rack to look as gravity-defying as hers.

  • Eva_baby

Amber looks gorgeous.  I think this is the best I’ve seen her on the RC.

Jill Scott demnstrates that women of a certain size can look just as stunning as the more “traditional” RC sizes.  it is about fit, cut and support.

Taraji looks awesome.  I forgive her for her bad dress at the Grammy’s.

I have a girl crush on Archie Punjabi.  I think that color is great on her.

I LOVE Garcelle’s look because it feels very outre.  Not a typical RC look, imo.

I am bummed no picture of Tracee Ellis Ross, though.  I thought her dress was lovely.

  • PeaceBang

This is how it’s done, white people! That is one fantastic looking crowd, with a few exceptions (I’m dying to know who the gals with the reality show are … what show?).

    • julnyes

Tia and Tamera are actresses best known for their TV series “Sister, Sister” that starred them, Jackee and Tim Reid in the 1990’s. They are both working actresses – Tia is on “The Game” and Tamera is a co-host on “Access Hollywood” at the moment.

Their reality show is “Tia and Tamera” – a bit of a dull affair mainly because they aren’t insane.

  • ri_dic

    Curvy girls for the win(s)!

    • Absolutely. Clearly, it CAN be done!

  • P M

Token brownie comment here: seeing the first 4 pics (and Archie Panjabi), may I submit that the sari seems as appropriate on our Western sisters as it is fabulous on the South Asian sisters.
Observe the draping and the one-shoulder sleeve detail.
Ms. Spencer looks like the cat that got the cream AND the canary.

  • megohd

Michelle Williams looks terribly skinny. Or skinny, terribly.

Amber Riley just makes me happy.

  • I swear the image you have labeled as Corey Reynolds is actually Deon Cole.

    • Lilia Beaman

You are correct.  I was going to say the same thing, but wanted to make sure someone else beat me to it.

  • KathKo

Corey Reynolds :Nothing fits and your tie is crooked. But at least, he buttoned his jacket !
    OK, I’m out.

  • PastryGoddess

Tamara’s dress was chewed on by rats… no?  Why else would there be holes in the bottom?

  • poggi

Alfre Woodward looks AMAZING (I had to look up the fact that she was 60, 60!!!).  Octavia Spencer looks beautiful and happy and comfortable.  Jill Scott looks gorgeous.  What a great red carpet and a great post.

  • greyhoundgirl

Amber, Archie, Jill, Octavia, Taraji–fabulous women, great actresses, and looking their best here. A beautiful red carpet full of women who look like they’re digging it.

  • amber riley clearly has her gays working overtime. they deserve a raise. she looks amazing.

  • MilaXX

This is how it’s done people. Nary a nude dress in the bunch.
Adepero Oduye – Love the dress, not a fan of the hair do.
Alfre Woodard – Gorgeous color. Love this look.
Amber Riley – I love how Amber embraces and dresses her shape. She looks drop dead gorgeous.
Anika Noni Rose – Like the dress, hate the hair.
Anthony Mackie – The more I see of this guy, the more I like him.
Archie Panjabi – I love this. Purple is one of my favorite color.
Corey Reynolds – Looks like he shopped off the rack at the tall and fat store.
Damon Wayans Jr. – Not only does he look just like his daddy, he acts just like him as well. He almost makes me want to what that sitcom he’s on.
Garcelle Beauvais – I think her jacket needed some adjusting before this picture was taken, but I like the look.
Jill Scott – So glad she stopped wearing the old lady wraps. This is a much more youthful look.
Kenny Lattimore – Dayum! What happened to Kenny? He used to be hot. Now he looks like a cater water.
Lenny Kravitz – I’m guessing Lenny is going to be like Mick Jagger & Steven Tyler. They settled on their looks early on and appear to be sticking with them.
Michelle Williams – Very pretty. She pretty thin so if this wasn’t fitted right, it could look like it’s just hanging on her. Somehow this works.
Ne-Yo – I saw him without a hat the other day. Let’s just say he needs to wear a hat all the time.
Octavia Spencer – She just looks so pretty. I’m glad she was a fast fashion learner.
Regina King – Smoking hot. I’m a bit annoyed with her storyline on Southland this season, but I still love her.Sandra Oh – Not like the hair or the shoe.
Tia & Tamara – Both look pretty tragic.
    Taraji P. Henson – Gorgeous.
Vanessa Williams – It’s amazing that both she and Taraji both have grown children. Well done ladies.

  • Markatha

Vanessa looks gorgeous.  Her face is beautiful.

  • Miss Amber has more than earned her new title. I refuse to refer to her as anything but from now on.

  • nannypoo

If there has ever been a more beautiful woman than Archie Panjabi I cannot think who it was. And Amber Riley has redeemed herself after a few less-than-perfect outings with this fabulous look. There are a lot of gorgeous women making great choices on this red carpet. Well done, Ladies.

  • marco5ny

Is it the angle or is Michelle Williams looking dangerously thin?

  • ThaliaMenninger

Vanessa Williams is the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen in person. Just stunning.

  • Amber Riley looks STUNNING. I love her hair like that – so sexy!

  • xmixiex

  • annrr

Best red carpet in ages. As an identical twin, Tia and Tamara’s looks are inexcusable. My twin and I would have made fun of each other until we both looked better. As in “take that ugly green dress off you are making me look fat”, “only if you put some make up and get rid of the hole-y sweat pants dress.”

  • BuffaloBarbara

I have a feeling all of these would be much more fabulous if they hadn’t been taken at a really weird angle, forcing me to re-imagine what they’d look like if everyone’s legs weren’t stubby and tilted backward…

  • FashionShowAtLunch

I would actually be grateful if Mr. Mackie up there would unbutton *more* of his buttons, if you catch my drift.

  • Anthony Mackie or Damon Wayons Jnr?

And I thought my last choice was difficult…

    – Sophie Zawistowski

  • Tom Shea

    Taraji. Vanessa.
    Say it like a mantra.
    Good God, y’all.

  • Linderella

Am I the only one who thinks Adepero Oduye’s dress is completely unflattering?  It literally looks like her ass has migrated to her front side!

    • NasserShaheen

No, I think it makes her look ass-backwards, and she clearly isn’t!

  • quiltrx

I’m sorry, uncles, but I’m going to have to disagree with you about Lenny.  As long as we ALL want to screw him within an inch of his life, he WILL keep dressing like this.  Even if he’s 70.

So glad to see Amber, Jill and Octavia REPRESENT for us big girls SO well!

And I WANT that skirt Garcelle has on!

    • holdmewhileimnaked

oy, mr kravitz. & yep you are right. about the dressing ’til seventy, anyway. me too, i think, also anyone else who can or is willing to get away w/ it. why not.

      • NasserShaheen

J’agree totally. He’s still got it and it looks good! He’s only late 40s…plenty of time left for this look I suspect.

  • Derek_anny

I was very confused when you said Damon Wayans looked like his father.  Then I noticed the Jr, and yes he does.

  • Caaro3

Vanessa Williams:  Now that is how you serve up baby heads!

  • holdmewhileimnaked

this post is a real palate cleanser after marni for h&m & even, somewhat shockingly & equally sadly, quite a bit of that most recent of oscar de la renta. i am only surprised it is not even more of one. too much similarity in shapes, maybe, for a symbolic rendering of fancy grapefruit ice.

amber riley ftw, w/ the skirt of garcelle beauvais knocking hard on that first place door. as an aside, up until maybe the last two years i thought ftw still meant fuck the world, a sentiment i kind of like better anyway. although it & its cleaned up homoacronym scarcely resemble one another overtly they perhaps have more common subtexts than one might ordinarily imagine, or at least than one might ordinarily being willing to admit.

  • jeeves22

    “Damon Wayans Jr.

He’s adorable, but it’s disconcerting how much he looks like his father, who’s a lot closer to our age.”

He makes me feel old, and I’m only in my 30s! I had a crush on Damon Sr. when I was a teen.

Lenny Kravitz always looks the same/wears the same clothes. Why?

And I hate Ne-Yo’s outfit with the weird-looking satin (?) piping. I prefer classic-looking suits and tuxes. Except when it’s Alan Cumming in blue plaid.

Taraji looks stunning. If only her hair was like that on Person of Interest!

  • someone may have already caught this, but that’s not Corey Reynolds; it’s Deon Cole, a comedian and writer for the Conan O’Brien show.

  • kimmeister

Jill Scott does look good, but that dress is not meant to be worn with a visible bra, right?  Especially not a bra whose straps appear to be digging painfully into her shoulder.

  • CatherineRhodes

Lenny Kravitz is the world’s biggest douche.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Is Vanessa Williams ever going to age like the rest of us?  Because this is REALLY unfair.

  • adnama79

Agree on Sandra Oh, but do love her necklace.

  • pdquick

The pose says, “I’ve Vanessa Williams and this is my rack.”

  • tsid2012

All hail Ms. Jill Scott!  Wowzaa, she looks amazing and love that hair.  Amber looks fantastic as well.  I’m going to risk sounding stereotyping here but I think women of color really have a strong advantage at owning a larger size, WERQing it and looking throw down fantastic.  So often caucasian woman of size seem to dress in an almost apologetic manner, trying to cover & disguise.  Wouldn’t it be great to see every woman, regradless of size, skin color or nationality, OWN her body and serve it up fashion fabulous?

  • Srw27

Love, love, LOVE Taraji!  “Person of Interest” is the BEST show!

  • bitterk

Lenny Lenny Lenny, you’d look insanely good in a suit and would lose none of your rocker cred.  I promise.  Please don’t turn into the creepy old guy at the bar.
