Maroquinaris Zoologicae by Billie Achilleos

Posted on February 02, 2012

Darlings, here’s your pretty AND your whimsy for the day. Louis Vuitton commissioned British artist Billie Achilleos to create a series of animals titled “Maroquinaris Zoologicae” using leather accessories to celebrate their 100th anniversary.

J’ADORABLE. We want an LV kitty!

    Attack of the Louis Crabs!!!

Coming to a theater near you.

    • Anonymous

That one looks a little creepy doesn’t it. Also the scorpion looking one.

I want the person from this video to be given the Owl one:

        I think it’s a beetle.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Cortney-Dean/100002491593625 Cortney Dean

Oh I adore this. What a great blend of fashion and art… I want them all!

  • P M

The owl’s cute, there’;s a lot of real fur, I think :(, but that chameleon: WANT!!!

  • Christine Harding Hart

Are these the same ones that were in the LV window in NYC last year?

  • Vaniljekjeks

I love the crab and chameleon!  And I am a crazy cat lady, I know, but I would totally carry around the cat one.  I want one customized to look like my cats.

    Best zoo ever.

  • Anonymous

    Amazing :)

Back in the old  days  when you could walk across the international bridge to Matamoros , Mexico , they used to sell purses made out of Armadillo’s at the tourist mercado. I think they cost about $5 US.

    • Anonymous

Thanks for the instant trip down memory lane! The serious beer drinkers always wanted to drive across in order to bring back cheap Corona, the tequila fans and the dilettante drinkers always advocated for walking, which was so much simpler.

  • Susana Reyes

So creative. I love them all.

  • Anonymous

Creative and beautiful. I love them all.

  • Anonymous

Oh, these are so fun! The kitty really is the best, with the gecko, roosters, and cobra not far behind.

    • Anonymous

      Rooster is great!!

  • J Dreesen

Man, i hope the rabbit wasn’t made with rabbit fur (a case of the “too soon?”s indeed!).

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=49702581 Susan Bullard Mayer

    Awesome!

  • Anonymous

WOW, love love love it. The concept might be good for a sculpture challenge on Work of Art.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Deborah-Jozayt/100002949685297 Deborah Jozayt

      Or even project accessory!

  • Anonymous

Oh, I find the kitty horrifying!

  • http://twitter.com/lenabena_ Elena

    Wow, so creative! Awesome.

  • Anonymous

WANT WANT WANT!!!  And I don’t even like LV usually.  I gasped with delight each time I scrolled down.

  • Anonymous

I like whimsy.  The doggie – which would be my go-to –  is tres boring, though

  • Anonymous

Actually for me the frog and the owl were the most clever and useful. Several (including, sadly the cat) for me appeared to be nothing more than sculptures (not that that’s a bad thing necessarily) with little or utility.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1253053236 Belle Burnett

    I want it ALL!

  • Anonymous

    That frog is darling!

  • Sarah Asarnow

I love the hedgehog! He just looks so EVIL.

  • http://twitter.com/MandySCG MandyJane

    The rooster is awesome.

  • Anonymous

All the ones with fur on ‘em freak me the fuck out for some reason–maybe too real in some horrible mutant alien way, I dunno–but I LOVE the rest. The frog is my favorite, because I love the expression on its “face,” but the iguana is amazingly beautiful.

  • Emily Myers

Love, love, love them all!  The coin purse for the snake head was clever.

  • Anonymous

    Porcupine!!!!!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WKSM57KFWUGRMKPDUW4SPL3GDM Kathryn

    Wait.  Now what?

  • Stephen Bornstein

…..and I thought turning my vintage LV suitcase into a side-table was cute

  • Anonymous

Is the iguana one actually based off of a real LV design? If it’s not I’d love to see them use those scales on everything.

  • MilaXX

LOL Glad to hear this is just a display and not some hideous bag line.

  • Anonymous

i definitely want all of these!

  • tylka5

    Beautiful and fun!

  • Anonymous

j’adorable.  the frog with the zipper mouth is kind of scary.  i want the little boston bull terrier.

  • Lattis

Love love love love love. Thanks for this! :)

  • Anonymous

    HAHA

  • http://twitter.com/TigerLaverada TigerLaverada

How clever! I love the chameleon and the grasshopper.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Wow. That is so amazingly creative. My daughter and I were having so much fun identifying the various ‘pieces’ of the bags that they used for the animals. How fun!

  • Susan Crawford

O.M.G. The kitty looks SOOO much like my Little Rain – I must have this! And the rabbit is adorable, and the dear little wee mouse, and the chameleon, and . . . oh, hell’s bells, just ship me one of each. Just so wonderful to see creativity like this – thanks T and Lo! You guys made my day MUCH brighter.

  • Wrenaria

    Those are all so AMAZING!

  • http://twitter.com/rmcgrudiva RL McGruder

Ooooh, the rooster and the snake for me!

  • Anonymous

The rabbit is SO cute! And my sister would kill for that frog.

  • Anonymous

    Why?

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/NOZTQKBZ7M6WL2TFJZVPMH3AN4 Barbie

These are fantastic.  Absolutely.   Want the cat (unless that’s real fur).  The toad’s pretty damn cool, too.  Well, they all are.  Thanks so much for posting these, TLo; would have never seen them otherwise!

  • Anonymous

Brilliant!!  Thank you for sharing!  Being a shoe girl, I’d never have dreamed I could squeee like this over purse-parts.

  • Aaron Blair

That bunny is scary.  It wants to eat my soul.  Everything else is cute.

  • Anonymous

I’m not much of a fan of the brand but the rooster is fabulous!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1474713106 Katy Morris McDermott

Oh my god. Stop it right now! This is AMAZING!

BUN!! LOUIS VUITTON BUN!! MUST HAVE!!

  • Anonymous

    um. Okay. LOL

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1241487378 Lauren Lynch Fox

love the bunny :) and the frog too!

  • Anonymous

These all made me smile, especially the chameleon, mouse, and owl. (Although, WTH, no turtle?)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZBFH32YG44LIIZYLSQPMBXMYCU Sarah

My KYOOT meter has now officially malfunctioned. I worked it pretty hard watching the Nature wolverine special last night on PBS, but then come the LV animals…must have porcupine bag with mousie change purse!!!!

  • http://eclectictsunami.blogspot.com/ Cassie

Sorry boys, but I gotta disagree. These creep me the fuck out. Especially the ones with fur – eek!

  • Anonymous

That is one cool chameleon. The crows and the frog crack me up. The kitty is a little bit creepy.

  • Anonymous

    OMG!! so frickin cute!

  • Martha Anderson

    they are all wonderful!

I love whimsy like this.  The Owl looks so smug.  The crab is delightful and the eyes on the chameleon are perfect

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

    Strange and wonderful!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1234087433 Jen Freeman

    Love the squirrel and owl

  • Anonymous

    WOW!!

  • http://twitter.com/annaria Ria V

I need that owl in my life.

  • Anonymous

How fun!  Lots of creativity to make so many different creatures…it’s pretty entertaining to see the animal, then try to figure out what accessories are making it up.  Very clever idea.

  • Anonymous

Finally, a good use for Louis Vuitton’s hideous bags …

  • http://onionjam.tumblr.com SkipperJane

I’ve seen a video about the making of these before, but it’s neat to see the complete set.  The chameleon is still my favorite.

  • Anonymous

Until now I never wanted anything to do with LV.    From tacky and “look at me” to whimsical and fabulous!

    • Anonymous

I am right there with you! This is the first time I’ve ever seen something with that LV logo on it that I’ve actually thought was interesting and worth owning!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emily-Smith/12431153 Emily Smith

    ZOMG so much cute

  • http://twitter.com/LOfficielEbony TheVeryLivingEND

    Wow.

  • Brad and Anne White

    Adorbs. Totally fab!

  • Anonymous

Some good, some bad, some looks like “Work of Art”  scraps.

  • Anonymous

I love the doggie, and I like the grasshopper and the hedgehog. That cat! I thought it was a real cat when I first looked at the thumbnail.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sarah-Adams/1143985903 Sarah Adams

I want the chameleon! That cat is scary though and I say that as a confirmed cat lady.

  • butter nut

amazing.  but also horribly horribly disturbing.

  • Sarafina Angstadt-Leto

    Adore the hedgehog.

  • Anonymous

    There’s a clever video here: http://trendland.net/louis-vuittons-maroquinaris-zoologicae/
showing the artist working on some of the pieces. Also a few more designs in this series.
    Fun and fabulous!

  • Anonymous

    OMG the owl!! LOVE!

  • Anonymous

I like the dog and the cockerel and I love and want the robin. But the cat, rabbit and hedgehog look like scary reanimated roadkill!

  • Anonymous

I want the chameleon. The ones with fur (except the squirrel) look kinda creepy though. But all the others are so cute

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3KCDEX4FOTCFHZP6WLKSOOKUVM Danielle

I’m not anti-fur, but the furry ones kinda creep me out.   Maybe they just look like an actual dead thing.

Some of these are really clever though – the scarab, frog, gecko, grasshopper, and chicken…and I think the crab could actually be legit, real-world clutch.

  • Anonymous

    smile…

  • Anonymous

Really clever!!..and so cute!!..I wanna LV kitty too!!!..bet I won’t have to scoop HIS poop every day…guess I’d have to get him a Prada litter pan?

  • Anonymous

Um, just too… weird. Count me out on this one.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Oh I just love me an artistic mind. I would have never come up with such things. Brilliant.

  • Anonymous

It’s original, yes, but it creeps me out for the most part.

  • Anonymous

The ones with the fur look a bit like a real animal is trapped in their, but I really like some of these (like the cobra and the chameleon).

  • http://profiles.google.com/laura.jane.ogorman Laura O’Gorman

    I. WANT. ALL OF THESE. So cute!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

    WANT

  • Anonymous

OOOO! Want Them Now! Can’t even choose. I WANT THEM ALL!

  • Anonymous

I’m a little weirded out by the fur.  I know it’s not rational, but I have this thing that if I eat the cow, then it is actually common sense to wear leather because it uses more of the cow.  I do not however eat any of the animals that typically provide fur, so somehow that seems different.  That and it is easier to distance yourself from what leather and steak used to be.  Fur just makes it too real I think.  Anyway, I think the cat is the creapiest of all, since it looks like they actually tortured a real cat by putting the leather armor on it!  On the other hand, I think there would be a market for a real bag based off the owl…

  • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

    OMG the rooster.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ahad-Zaki-Abdul/100000663410831 Ahad Zaki Abdul

I don’t know, in my mind there is something grotesque about using leather and fur to create sculptures of animals.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-Charlotte-Siewierkiewicz/503556621 Jessica Charlotte Siewierkiewi

You can get me to buy nearly everything if it features an owl.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IHWCJIMARF4OOW6PQZQS3RFOOA JillK

These are amazing. I want the frog, the cobra and the armadillo, please.

Oh, and the grasshopper and the owl, too. Thank you.

  • Anonymous

These are wonderful! Love the frog, chameleon, the two birds, porcupine, cobra, and most especially the cat. What fun and whimsy. :)

  • Lisa

I love these!  Wow, how incredible – what a huge amount of work to create something so fanciful!  I do admit, I’m not crazy about the ones with the fur, just because they look like some kind of semi-taxidermy thing; they’re a tad creepy.  The rest are wonderful!

  • Anonymous

    I’ll take the owl, please.

But I do think someone has a bit too much time on their hands!!

  • http://twitter.com/ennisamy Amy Ennis

The cat is too creepy so I was prepared not to like the collection. I like the ones that look less like actual animals and more like fashionable interpretations. Love the cobra and the birds.

  • Anonymous

It’s stuff like this that remind me again that we’re all just basically marking time until death.

  • ElitheMonkey

I want puppy so bad! It’s probably the only dog I could have, since I’m allergic to them all.

  • Kristina Toma

I absolutely adore whimsy (probably more than the average person) but there’s a gross disconnect for me (both literally and figuratively) when leather is used to create animal sculptures. It’s just…like fashioned taxidermy.

But I do adore that owl!
