Leighton Meester in Oscar de la Renta

Posted on February 08, 2012

Look, we don’t watch Gossip Girl, mainly because we’re not teenage girls, but for those of you who are or who like to pretend you are, just tell us:

Penn Badgley and Leighton Meester filming “Gossip Girl” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Oscar de la Renta Resort 2012 Collection/Model: Ajak Deng

Is her character supposed to be crazy? Or blind? Or does she just have an overwhelming need to do terrible things to beautiful dresses, like pairing them with items that shouldn’t be hanging in the same closet?

She just married the prince of Monaco. I watch GG for the crazy-ass clothes (same reason I watched SATC).

    • Anonymous

Wait, isn’t she supposed to be in high school?

      • Anonymous

She was when the show started. They’re in the fifth season now I think. She has gone to and dropped out of both NYU and Columbia (though they never really said she dropped out of Columbia, the university just sort of dropped off the face of GG Earth). She has also been pregnant and lost the baby. It’s quite the soap opera. I leave it on Netflix while I’m working and read the hilarious recaps at Television Without Pity later. Vice.

        • Anonymous

Meh. Not such a vice. At least you’re not watching American Idol :)

          • Anonymous

To be fair, it was very well-written for a time. Had an arch tone and a mix of literary influences (Emily Brontë, Austen, Molière).

          • Anonymous

I completely agree, the first and second(ish?) seasons were actually really smart and well-written. Recently, however it’s become straight-up soap opera.

          • irielle

I agree too. I really liked it at first, but it really went downhill.

        • Anonymous

Hey, thanks for the intel on the show. She’s been quite a busy character. As for vices, I love the cop shows, which I usually watch while working. Can’t get enough of those men in uniform.

Have you seen Luther yet on BBC?  So intense, you’re sitting on the edge of your seat the entire time.

          • Anonymous

I heard that was good, but I wasn’t able to find it on my cable carrier. Addicted to “Southland.”

          • Anonymous

             Ben McKenzie (sp?)…yum.

        • Helen C

She transferred from NYU to Columbia.

  • Anonymous

    I’m guessing it’s a prom episode. That’s the only excuse…

  • Anonymous

Is she wearing a CROWN?  Wha?

    • http://twitter.com/drnels Nels P. Highberg

      Well, she’s now royalty.

Your User Name might be my new favorite thing…huzzah to you BWGP! :)

  • Judy_J

What a horrible thing to do to that beautiful dress.

    • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

And the hat on the model is better?

  • Isana Leshchinskaya

she’s jist trying her best duchess kate on top and failing; the bottom is textbook blair. eric daman is amazing, and although the show is beyond juvenile, his styling of everyone makes me salivate on a weekly basis, mostly due to blair’s closet, which unfortunately as of late consists of terrible, matchy suit’n'fascinator atrocities. best show styling since sex and the city hands down, and leighton is gorgeous and talented and i really can’t wait for serena (queen of physical and dramatic mediocrity, blake lively) to be in some kind of botched plastic surgery and written off the show.  leighton is today’s 25 yo joan collins <3 her! this rant is unwarranted, but you've never mentioned the show before, which is sad because the fashion is almost always (not here) mind-blowing! i.e.: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JPw33VrQZ-g/TanKcWD_PII/AAAAAAAAAIY/_99_MHskWXk/s1600/gossip-girl-marchesa.jpg

That link was the prom episode. Gorgeousness. They should switch the outfits.

    • Mariah Warnock-Graham

Agreed, although for a time, Chuck’s wardrobe was the one to watch. Those pocket squares! Those well-mismatched scarves! Lust!

  • Anonymous

It looks like the TV version of Enchanted…I must believe they broke out into “How Will I Know” while walking/running/dancing down those steps

  • marilyn

If they are filming, then how horrible.  If they are between takes and she is just keeping warm, no harm no foul.  Obviously the suit jacket does not work with the ball gown.  If she did not have the god-awful jacket on, I bet she looked pretty fancy!!

    • Isana Leshchinskaya

there’s a giant brooch on that jacket. it HAS to be for filming.

  • Anonymous

Yes, she is now the reluctant princess of Monaco, hence the tiara and crazy dress. I can’t figure out the weird jacket pairing though. Really, she normally looks stunning and impeccable on the show (as opposed to Blake/Serena who wears sequined tops with shoulder pads to bed), but Tom and Lorenzo always manage to highlight some of the odder ensembles. The show is FANTASTIC. Don’t knock it.

    • Anonymous

I watch it to see what Lily (mother of Blake Lively’s character) is wearing….

      • Helen C

Lily has been the one consistently well-dressed character on this show.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1540233153 Malve Lyborg

        There’s a blog about Lily’s Style:

  • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

The tiara is just ridiculous. What could this scene possibly be about?

  • Allison Fisseler

She just married the Prince of Monaco, Charlene Wittstock-style, meaning right after the ceremony the prince was like “I do not love you. This marriage is a contract and you better keep up appearances.” Apparently the faux Monegasque royal family on the show doesn’t want international embarassment…so maybe this is her way of dressing a fool and embarassing them sartorially? Everyone knows princesses send secret messages with their clothes…

  • Anonymous

I couldn’t possibly guess what this show is about. I care about it as much as the guy in the background of the first picture.
But way to ruin a dress.

  • Isana Leshchinskaya

and does this mean B and Lonely Boy are hooking up?? Finally!

    • http://twitter.com/drnels Nels P. Highberg

Well, no Dair, yet.  And after Blair finds out Dan sent the video to GG, Dair probably won’t happen.

      • Helen C

Meh, she has forgiven Chuck for much worse things numerous times before.  She has forgiven Nate for worse things.  Maybe Dan being a douche would finally make him attractive to Blair, who seems to only be attracted to douches.

  • http://twitter.com/erinrileyau Erin Riley

She’s married to the prince of Monaco, but on their wedding night, he told her he didn’t love her and the marriage was one of convenience.  Lonely Boy up there is in love with her, and they frequently make getaways, only for Blair to recant and go back to Chuck and/or The Prince.

So in short: yes, she’s crazy, but there’s a good chance it’s just that that was the only coat available as she rant to meet up with Dan and tell him she does/doesn’t love him.

    • http://eclectictsunami.blogspot.com/ Cassie

      Poor Lonely Boy. :(

  • http://twitter.com/drnels Nels P. Highberg

Well, I’m not a teenage girl, but I watch.

She’s wearing mismatched clothes because of her attempts to get out of her marriage, which keep failing. She escapes, puts on whatever she finds or that Dan can get for her, and then gets pulled back in.  Yeah, there’s more to it, but that’s basically it.

  • Anonymous

I know nothing about this Gossip show, but if it involves teenagers who get to wear runway to their proms, I’m glad I’m out of that loop.
Also if that gorgeous runway model would just smile, it would make that pretty pink dress look amazing.

  • Mariah J

I am SO glad I don’t watch this

  • Jill Roberts

OMG, that dress.  Why did they pair that exquisite dress with accessories from Claire’s and Forever 21?

  • Anonymous

Wait – isn’t this a show that takes place in New York high school? And she’s married? To the Prince of Monaco?

That dress is gorgeous on the model, by the way.

    • Nicole Jackson

They finished high school back in 2008!

      • Anonymous

        Oh, thanks.

  • Anonymous

Is it fair to say that the jacket is less tragic than the runway hat?   That hat is god awful.

    • Anonymous

Ha. That is bad. Come to think of it, the model’s expression could be interpreted as, “Why am I the only one who had to wear this stupid old hat?”

  • Anonymous

Meester always manages to make everything she wears look like a mess. She is such a pretty girl. I don’t get it.

    • Helen C

Uhm, have you watched early seasons of Gossip Girl?  Because the character is always carefully dressed.  In the recent episodes she lost a baby and is trying to run away from her husband, not to mention she has lingering feelings for an abusive ex-boyfriend…  So yeah the character is probably crazy now.

      • Anonymous

Uhm, no. I think she looks a mess when I see her in photos in general, not on TV. She just never seems to carry off a look well to me.

  • Anonymous

thanks to some of the bitter kittens for explaining this show, had no idea

  • Anonymous

In a way it’s cute. I mean if the dress came from a thrift shop, this would be a legitimate way to accessorize it. Except the tiara, which is too much even in my world (although a rhinestone headband..).

  • Anonymous

methinks this was inspired by Emma Watson’s brilliant pairing of that dress with the white jacket at the UK premiere of the final HP film, no?

  • Anonymous

i’m confused, she’s married to the faux Prince of Monaco, one that is neither paunchy nor bald?…does this one have various baby momma’s scattered around too??…:)

  • Anonymous

I don’t watch either, so could someone tell me why she’s wearing a tiara and a pink princess dress and her date is in black jeans, a flannel and scuffed shoes? Is she trying to pull a Sybil and run off with the help?

  • Anonymous

You know, when this show first came out, she had the best clothes. She was a complete preppy princess. This season she got royally screwed (hah) and it makes no sense at all. Her hair has been terrible, her clothes = terrible, everything = terrible.

It was so funny seeing Blake’s bride’s maid dress next to the wedding dress. Blake’s was this awesome couture looking gown and then there’s Leighton wearing ruffles and a very tacky veil with some crumpled up tinfoil tiara.

This season’s fashion does not relate to her character at. all.

    • Helen C

Well, Blake is actually the top billing actress of this show, and her entire positive reputation is based upon her Gossip Girl fashion styles.  Although anyone who watched the show can tell the other casts carried the show and she’s the deadweight.

  • Anonymous

Not to mention the fact that she’s letting that gorgeous gown drag on a New York City sidewalk!

  • Anonymous

Oh please tell me the jacket is just to keep warm between takes!?

  • Anonymous

I’m thinking she looks really cold. Maybe the jacket was the best they could come up with. (The glass is half full:-)

  • Anonymous

I know this isn’t the point…but why is she kissing Dan?! Go away Dan, and let Blair and chuck live happily ever after. Once she is done being the basically slave princess of Monaco, that is.

    • Anonymous

ha ha ha! That’s exactly what I thought – gotta catch up on my dvr’ing.  Love that dress though.

    • Anonymous

im almost cetain thats a dream, it must be!

  • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

The story is about her impending marriage to a prince, while getting lots of cold feet, and being attracted to two other men, too. So I’d say the outfit reflects the persona at this point.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OSYAJATXUH3QX7ZDDF52GXG4PU Janie R

Maybe it’s a dream sequence, you know like when you dream your naked, but instead of that she dreamed she was horribly styled.

  • Anonymous

This must be a difficult dress to accessorize. The model looks even sillier than Leighton.

  • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

I like it. hah i said it.

  • glennethph

OMG, before you judge, learn the frigging context to what you’re looking at.  Then you can be as bitter as you want. Jeebus.

  • MilaXX

lol, I don’t watch but I’d love to know the context for this outfit. I thought they all dressed really well on that show.

  • Anonymous

From reading these comments I can tell there are a lot of Gossip Girl haters out there. Well, it is a little silly and drawn out, and I haven’t watched for a couple of years, but it is one of life’s guilty pleasures. Lots of fun.

  • Pennymac

Good Lord! Folded and pleated and seamed and ombred in ghastly pink; and a passable jacket that makes her top half look like a “schlump”. In the fifth picture it looks like she wrapped the canopy from her French Provincial bed around her waist!

Context, Shmontext, that is a fugly ensemble!

  • Anonymous

I’m of the opinion that every man with hair like this is a douchebag. Experience is yet to prove me wrong.

  • Anonymous

i kinda love it.  except the tiara (?)

  • http://twitter.com/lenabena_ Elena

That is such a travesty with that gorgeous, gorgeous dress.
I thought the stylist on GG was supposed to be good.

  • Anonymous

My only comment is that this guy is really working my “John Mayer is a douche” nerve.  The rest of this is too foolish-looking to discuss, and not worthy of John-Mayer-level hatred.

  • Anonymous

I’m not sure what’s worse–the crown on Leighton or the ten gallon on the model.

  • glennethph

I love that people love to rip on stuff they don’t know nothing about.

  • Anonymous

haha! My thought exactly, that dress is so pretty, and I know it’s cold, but its a shame to cover it up…if you must wear a coat, make that a focus on its own…

  • Anonymous

she’s wearing a crown cuz she just married a prince, she’s wearing a coat cuz its cold, im sure she’ll take it off once she gets to the ball/party/dinner/whatever event thats in the upcoming episode. i <3 gossip girl and im 23!!! cant help my guilty pleasure :P

  • Anonymous

I haven’t watched GG since season 1. I did glimpse a little of the royal wedding ep while I was doing something else though, it reminded me how cringeworthy the show was. (Also cringeworthy: Blair’s wedding hair!)

However I do love seeing pics of their clothing during filming. Even when I don’t like it, it’s still fun to ogle.

  • Anonymous

When I saw the headline “Leighton Mester in Oscar de la Renta,” all I could think of was what a waste.

  • Anonymous

Lover the dress!  Love the jacket! Love the tiara!  Love the brooch! Hate them all together

  • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

GG is not a blip on my radar, and I am far from teenhood…. but I suspect that a TV plot allows for a broader range of characterizations than “blind or crazy” for a character wearing a really expensive designer dress (and even a crown) but managing to look a bit like an ordinary girl on a prom date. Unless the character is supposed to be a fashion model on a shoot or an over-the-top narcissist, this look makes perfect sense to me in context. She just looks like a very very very rich girl on a prom date.

  • Anonymous

Apart from the sins here is having that beautiful dress gets smeared up by filthy pavement.  It looks so much better on the model because she is tall to avoid the dress puddling into the ground.  This little girl is playing dress up and she looks ridiculous.

  • Anonymous

whatever do you mean, gentlemen? my 4 year old niece wears her princess dress and tiara to the diner. everyone thinks she looks lovely. Oh, wait, that’s because she’s only 4.

    • Helen C

Because the actress is actually playing a Princess right now?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QP4RBTAZX6QTHZZSJ2YT7DGO7Q Brittany

I watch the show, and from a purely practical perspective, this makes sense. Blair is a Princess on the show (yup) and this is probably an exterior closing shot to some sort of interior activity. She can’t wear a long coat with THAT dress, and it’s probably only for a fleeting portion of the show. I agree with the other commenters – the show has great fashion. The eye candy is one of the few reasons left for me to watch it.

  • Cathy S

I have no idea what’s going on here, but I like that guy’s coat.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, the jacket and brooch really ruin the look.

Meanwhile, I want to steal Penn Badgley’s coat.  And force him to get a haircut.

  • Anonymous

I’m a huge Dair fan (Dan/Blair), so I can barely look at the dress because I’m so focused on the fact that it looks like Dan and Blair almost share a kiss. The dress on the model is beautiful. If the jacket and crown were gone it would look lovely on Blair. The stylists on GG have a tendency to go a little overboard with their styling.
