Kristin Davis in Monique Lhuillier

Posted on February 06, 2012

As is almost always the case with Kristin and her going-out outfits:

Kristin Davis attends the premiere of “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” in Los Angeles in a Monique Lhuillier dress paired with House of Lavande earrings, a Judith Leiber clutch, and Salvatore Ferragamo pumps.

Monique Lhuillier Pre-Fall 2012 Collection

Our first thought is, “She looks cute.” Our second thought is, “She’s GOT to stop dressing like Charlotte.”

Granted, Sarah Jessica Parker has made a habit of dressing like Carrie Bradshaw in a lot of ways, but we tend to think SJP dresses how Carrie would dress in 2012, not how Carrie dressed in 2001. Kristin literally looks no different than she did ten or eleven years ago. EXACTLY the same, down to the style of dress and hair. That is truly good news for her, that she apparently has figured out how to slow her aging to a crawl – and to be clear, this is not at all an issue of her dressing age-appropriate. But as style ruts go, this one’s ready for the Guinness Book.

But the dress really is cute, we have to say.

She looks like she’s going to prom…it’s pretty, but it’s totally prom to me.  Also, be sure to not be so liberal with the barrier cream on the feet when you tan, Kristen.

      • Anonymous

I have that exact tan from years of Catholic school ankle socks: it never goes entirely away.

        • Anonymous

You must be very young, still, then.  :-)

    • http://twitter.com/democracydiva Democracy Diva

The dress is not cute enough to overcome the fact that the girl hasn’t even remotely switched up her style in a decade. I know you didn’t ask for IN/OUT, but it’s out!

    • http://twitter.com/VicksieDo VicksieDo

      If it ain’t broke….

      • Anonymous

J’agree.  She looks amazing.  I figure she’s got a few more years before she needs to try something different but until then you strip-mine the heck out of that look, girl!

    • Anonymous

I think she also dresses for her body type (she has that tiny waist and curvy hips and thighs).  Someone probably once told her that this style of dress suited her, and she’s never forgotten.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

How can we talk about Michelle William’s tweeitude when Kristin Davis walks amongst us? She looks so cute, but surely cute isn’t always appropriate?

      • margaret meyers

At least Michelle changes it up.  Kristin is always in this kind of dress.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

She’s so pretty, and it’s a good color on her, but the fit in the bust is not that flattering.

    • https://me.yahoo.com/a/O5zYg6EMmcahpFvPfpdCYLTSyBxqSWYJXena#f908b Kate

I’d gladly be stuck in her fashion rut!

    • Anonymous

As good as she does look here and usually, I agree that she’s in a rut and I’d love to see her move in other directions to switch things up.  Dislike the grape kool-aid lips.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

To be fair, Charlotte didn’t change a whole lot throughout the years either.

    • Anonymous

I wonder if it is really difficult for women at this age to dress for the read carpet. you go slinky, you are dressing too young, you pull a Meryl Streep, you are dressing too old. I also think this is the shape that works best for her. She’s slender up top, but probably has hips.

      • Anonymous

If she is considered curvy then I kind of want to punch myself in the face.  Hollywood’s version of everything is ridiculous and nauseating, but I don’t see how she could be lumped in with the Christina Hendricks/JLo crowd, but I could be way off.  This is a still from her in Couples Retreat and it doesn’t read curvy, but again, that’s my journey:
        http://moviecultists.com/2009/10/12/box-office-couples-retreat-huge-and-paranormal-activity-rising/kristen-davis-black-undressing-couples-retreat/

        • Anonymous

Agreed! Don’t consider her curvy, but have read a few articles where she “complained” about her “hips” making it difficult to find dresses.

          • Anonymous

Cheese and rice, that is both hilarious and sad.

        • Anonymous

curvy is not the same as plus sized.  it’s not a euphemism for plus sized.  trust me, i’ve been plenty overweight and still decidedly NOT curvy.  it’s a shape and a type rather than a judgement.

          • Anonymous

Right and I wouldn’t imply that curvy = plus or vice-versa. Personally, I am a rectangle shape – no waist and my shoulders and hips are the same – but with a booty and not much going on boob-wise. I would consider my lower half curvy just due to butt, but not as a whole.  I interpret curvy as ample chest, cinched waist and wider (proportionally) hips.  Because Davis has a relatively small chest and not really a lot going on in the hips/booty area, I just find it odd that she identifies as curvy.

            • http://profiles.google.com/marteani Barbara Guttman

She’s actually pretty hippy in that picture you posted.  She’s definitely more pear-shaped than hour-glass, but I have no problem with her being thought of as somewhat curvy.

      • http://eclectictsunami.blogspot.com/ Cassie

I don’t think it’s a matter of size so much as proportions – I remember on SATC, she had that teeny waist and her hips were curvy in relation to the rest of her size. She’s very slender, obviously, but that doesn’t mean she can’t still technically be bottom-heavy.

    • Anonymous

Agree wholeheartedly on the major rut.  And also that this woman obviously has a strange painting in her attic…

That said, totally love the dress and hate the ill-fitting and awful shoes, the purple lipstick, and the cheesey grin in photo 1.

      • Anonymous

lol! That’s it! teh picture of Dorian grey, Kristin style – it ages while she stays the same. :-)

    • Ann M. Erickson

love the earrings. agree w/ you guys on everything else.

    • Anonymous

The dress is so cute.  BUT I hate the shoes.  And I’m so ready for her to have a new style.  She can keep it long and have a different style.  Bangs!  Highlights!  Something!  I do wish the hem was a bit shorter so it hit her at the knees.

      • Anonymous

Yes, the hem is…awkward. Still whatever the hell she is drinking/injecting, I’ll take two.

    • Anonymous

Pretty color dress on a pretty lady.  The length of the skirt makes her legs look stumpy. Maybe she should have gone with footwear that elongated her legs instead.

    • Anonymous

She’s like the Jen Aniston of the SATC bunch. She looks good but always the same…

    • Pennymac

      This isn’t a style rut. It’s a style trench!

    • Anonymous

What a rut. I mean it is hard to argue when she looks so good, but YAWN!!

    • Anonymous

You’re not wrong, but i’d still rather see someone dress boring & classy, than attention-grabbing and inappropriate. I still smile when I see her, and wish i could look that good!

    • Jasmine Moten

She looks like such a Stepford Wife type. I think she’s adorable though.

    • Anonymous

      Maybe Charlotte dressed like Kristin.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Fair play for finding a look that works for her, but surely this can’t be the ONLY look that works for her.  Evolve, darling!

    • Anonymous

Cute dress, but c’mon, how old is she? GROW UP ALREADY.

    • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

Out. Yes, I know, this isn’t that kind of post. Still. Out.

And I do kind of think it’s an age thing, since the dress is so bridesmaid/prom like and she’s lovely but not 18. It looks like the kind of dress a woman might wear to her twentieth reunion to remind everyone how she looked when she was homecoming queen. It’s not a good look.

      • Anonymous

        Peggy Sue got married?

    • Anonymous

Gorgeous color, but it’s bridesmaid-y to me. Still, she is beautiful and is one woman whose long, wavy hair doesn’t compel me to reach for scissors.

    • Anonymous

eh, she clearly likes how she looks and frankly, she still looks great. I can’t throw a stone. … yet.

    • Anonymous

She is in a rut, but she looks adorable.

    • Anonymous

It’s the YOGA.  Kristen is a devoted practitioner, and she looks youthful because of it.  Her dress and shoes are a bit bridesmaid for me, but she looks great.

    • Terence Ng

I would love to see her do a bit more of a modern working woman look, what i would expect a New York art curator to dress in this day and age. Pants, girl. Lots of pants. You can pull it all off.

    • http://profiles.google.com/marteani Barbara Guttman

I don’t mind it, she looks lovely.  She’s found a style that works very well with her figure and if she had to find it through a series of stylists on a hit tv show, so be it.  But I do not like the shoes or make up at all with this look.  Something about the makeup looks muddy to me, and I want to put some jewelry on her.

    • Anonymous

Yes, she and Jennifer Aniston need to go halfsies on a new stylist.

      • Anonymous

Hahaha…for me, though, the difference is that Kristin doesn’t scream “validate me” when she dresses.  Aniston, however, reminds me of that woman who just went through a terrible break-up and then has to go out and get attention for validation…you know, the peeps who have sex for self-esteem. Good God, I’m serving up too much bitchiness today

    • Anonymous

True, although SJP was known for being “fashion-y” way before SATC.
This style of dress does work well for Kristen’s shape, but I’m sure there’s something else that will also work.
Make-up is bad. Harsh and aging.

    • Anonymous

She looks like a bridesmaid. Not cute.

    • http://tigergray.blogspot.com/ Tiger Gray

As far as aging goes I actually though the opposite; she looks so much older in that dress precisely because the dress is so twee.

      • MilaXX

THIS.  The look is far too cutesy

    • Anonymous

i sometimes question the difference between being in a “style rut” and finding a style that works for you and your body type and going with it because it’s just so YOU… i’m not saying kristin should pull a charlotte every single time, but maybe she really loves the charlotte style, so why mess with a good thing? but i’d love to see how T and Lo would update kristin’s look, given the chance!

      • Anonymous

Seems a TLo “If We Were Her Gays” post may be due…hmmmm?  ;)

        • Anonymous

I want to like this 100 times

        • Anonymous

I really liked the few posts of those they did.

    • Anonymous

That’s a lovely color on her and a very cute dress.  Charlotte liked to dress in classic styles and there’s no reason Kristin shouldn’t be able to do the same.  There’s nothing wrong with classic.

    • Judy_J

Cute dress, love the color.  But she does look exactly like she did 10 years ago.  Updating is good…she should try it.  Oh, and again my pet peeve rears its ugly head….her shoes appear to be a size too big.  Sigh.

    • oohsparkley!

She looks great.  I don’t think the dress is too “twee”.  Maybe a non-matching belt?

    • MilaXX

I find the  dress a bit prom-y. A if she’s a soccer mom who’s proud that she kept her figure trim enough to still wear her prom dress.

    • Anonymous

I would love to see her in a different haircut. Anything.

    • Anonymous

Well, I don’t think that’s a shade of lipstick Charlotte would wear so I guess that’s a plus.   I would love for her do something – ANYTHING – different with her hair.   I know there are celebs who have a signature look or style, but this shouldn’t be one.

    • Rand Ortega

I would love to see Kristin in a funky asymmetrical  bob w/ a long bang in a monochrome suit/ preferably silver, w/ either wide leg, long pants or a maxi. She doesn’t have to go cutesy anymore. That face is ageless, timeless & would work w/ a myriad of styles. I remember a photo spread she did some years ago where she did rock & roll, punk, etc. Now she’s starting to bug the shit out me like J. Aniston.

    • Anonymous

looking at her reminds me I haven’t changed my “go to” lipstick in a very long time

    • Anonymous

Perhaps she was cast as Charlotte because she is a Charlotte-like person. Audrey Hepburn (and Katharine Hepburn for that matter) worked the same basic silhouettes their entire lives. I can’t fault her for not being trendy, especially when those trends would look like crap on the sands of her hourglass.

    • Anonymous

She looks adorable, but it’s true that this photo could have been taken 10 years ago.  It’s eerie.

    • Anonymous

I think Kristen is afraid of fashion and everyone praised her look as Charlotte, so she stuck to it. Also, she does have a difficult body type to dress – not that she doesn’t have a fantastic bod, but she is short and pear shaped with a long torso and great shoulders, so once a stylist told her a certain style worked for her I think she breathed a sigh of relief and went with it to a fault.

She always looks pretty and sort of generic and I wish she would switch it up a bit. She’s too pretty to dress this dull.

    • Anonymous

The dress looks so dated. But not enough to be vintage.

    • Anonymous

I like her and like this okay but I think maybe if she were wearing a trendier, more modern shoe the entire look would feel fresher.

      • Anonymous

Maybe different hair too.  Her hair is pretty but it doesn’t seem modern.

    • Anonymous

I dunno, guys.   Put Rooney Mara in that dress and we’d all be drooling.

For me,  it’s not the dress and not the styling; it’s what she exuding.

    • Laurie Bergman

Wow…before scrolling down, my immediate thought was that the mighty reptilian tail was part of the dress!  I could see such a creation on Lady Gaga.  (Post scroll-down: JCrew bridesmaid.)

    • Anonymous

How old is she?? What is her secret? Does she have kids? Amazed at her youthful figure and face,

    • Stefanos Mantyla

The dress is really beautiful on the model. It looks more fresh and more designed on the model.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Yeah, I’m gonna’ chime in with the few others and say if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. I do get what TLo means about a rut but I guess it doesn’t bother me because I think her ‘rut’ works for her.

    • margaret meyers

She’s a cute girl, but she’s how old?  She’s gotta stop this “nicest girl in middle school” act.

      • Lisa

I know!  She even has the “Barbie Circa 1992 Head Tilt” going on!

    • Anonymous

Personally I’d have removed the bow, which makes it look a little bridesmaid-ish.  Ditto the “if I buy these in a neutral color I’ll be able to wear them again after the wedding” shoes.  But the color is GORGEOUS, and I love her earrings.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jane-Morris/1076502799 Jane Morris

How does she not walk right out of those big shoes?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

Love the color, but the style is so charlotte.

    • http://twitter.com/SuzanneCitere SuzanneCitere

      Bridal party.

    • butter nut

she looks pretty, but the bodice is too tight on her.  i agree though, she needs to get with the times.

    • Anonymous

I love the color on her and the classic, albeit youngish, silhouette.
She needs stockings and no-peep-toe elegant shoes for this dress, like the model’s (but not necessarily black) — not clunky satin platforms.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/LE-Bruce/546942723 L.E. Bruce

I morne the loss of my panty hose.  I have NEVER, ever, ever, ever, never, approved of bare legs.  I know I am old…can’t help it…but you never had to worry about what color your legs were!  She looks beautiful, and believe me, this is NOT a prom dress.

    • Kyle Crawford

say what you will… BUT, this could be a still from any season of SATC… the woman is NOT aging

    • Anonymous

Way too cutesy. I’m over it.

    • Anonymous

It’s tough me and by boyf have a very special place for Charlotte in our hearts (well his pace is of a slightly different nature to mine!) so I can’t bring myself to criticise her, cos she does look good. But she does need to change it up now. I think just taking 4 inches off her hair would freshen things up without making her look too different.

    • Anonymous

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Do something different, honey. Anything. The hair maybe?

The overly perky, phony smile isn’t helping, dear.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HREPOWNBVUBRIVPQCF3ST2IKDM Euphory

She does look cute.  And she apparently doesn’t age.

    • http://frockpaperscissors.blogspot.com/ kvlm

She does not know how to dress for her body type at all.  She has broad shoulders and her torso is a little disproportionate to her legs and hips.  There are sooooooooooooo many people who could help her with that.  Plus, it is totally prom circa 1989.

    • Anonymous

I would like to see Rooney Mara in this dress (different shoes, though). On Kristin, it looks like 1985 prom. Lost all its edge.

    • Anonymous

I guess since “Charlotte” still probably pays the bills from residuals, ect, she is going to stick with it.  As you said, she doesn’t look bad, just the same.

    • http://twitter.com/stopENtalk Brittany Johnstone

Honey, I love you, but NO. Shiny, bad spray tan and a dress that wouldn’t work on a 14 year old! o-u-t, out.

    • Anonymous

Eyebrows and makeup are a big old ICK.  But she is so pretty and seems like a genuinely nice person so she always looks good to me.

    • Anonymous

I would have liked a necklace or something.  Don’t they make dresses with some sleeves anymore?

    • Anonymous

I think she realized that this cut and shape of dress work on her pear-shape-ish figure and build (and she’s correct), which is why she defaults to it. Perhaps if she changed her hair style and if the dress color wasn’t so Easter-eggy, this would work better.
