In or Out: Scarlett Johansson in Calvin Klein

Posted on February 09, 2012

From our perspective, Scarlett hasn’t been having an easy time of it lately, style-wise. We figured we’d link to an example or two, but then we realized you might as well read the last half-dozen entries to get the gist of it. She was sporting weirdly unflattering hairstyles and dresses for at least 6 months there and we can’t help thinking it was a divorce-induced period of style dysfunction; one of the those periods of your life all your good friends silently agree to forget and all your not-so-good friends hold over your head for years.

Scarlett Johansson attends the Golden Camera Awards 2012 in Calvin Klein Collection.

We suppose that makes us good friends to Scar, because we think this is a major step in the right direction. We have some issues, which we will gleefully get to in a moment, but for now, we would like to point out that her hair looks kind of pretty (it’s at least the right shape this time), and that this is a good time to remind her that simple, body conscious silhouettes like this are her very best friends of all. This is a fairly decent example of the kind of low-key, elegant, and somehow savvy sexy she can be devastatingly good at it.

However.

The winged eyeliner, girl. Since we’re now friends, we can tell you that you look like a streetwalker in 1965.  Also, the dress is – and we can’t believe we’re about to say this about something with a Calvin Klein label on it – a bit too complicated for such a simple dress, if that makes any sense. And finally, she’s got the kind of coloring that really begs for more color. This silhouette in practically any color would look even better on her than simple black. Still, a step in the right direction, so we can’t get too upset. Except maybe about the eyeliner.

That’s our take, anyway. If you disagree, we’ll sulk and call you “big face” for the rest of the day, just to annoy you.

IN! She’s looking FIERCE and HOT, jealous bitches!

OUT! Kind of half-assed, if you ask me. Which you did.

Meryl Streep’s dressing gown (with accompanying conjunctivitis courtesy of Max Factor) got a loud and sorrowful OUT from the commentariat.

Out. I agree this is a step in the right direction, but it’s the tiniest of baby steps. She still looks sad and bedraggled and droopy, like she needs a vacation with people who truly love and care about her.

      • Anonymous

I just wish the dress fit better. I’ve noticed that she tends to have a lot of fit issues, especially in really form-fitting clothes. Not that she is by any stretch of the imagination large, but she does have a lot more va va voom to her figure than most other starlets. I just don’t think she gets good advice on how to dress her figure (if she gets any), and she definitely isn’t getting clothes that fit her body…

        • Anonymous

Agreed…she’s not picking the right silhouettes and it’s unfortunate because she has a banging body. However, looking at the pics again, I will say that wagon she’s draggin’ looks good.  However, I love and appreciate all juicy booty, so it may just be me

          • http://robot-heart.tumblr.com heartbot

No. I’d kill to have her body, so it’s not just you. I’d just love to see her make the most of it.

          • http://robot-heart.tumblr.com heartbot

No. I’d kill to have her body, so it’s not just you. I’d just love to see her make the most of it.

        • Anonymous

I agree.  I think she’s seriously gorgeous, and this dress isn’t doing what it should for her.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Amanda-Miller/1124460923 Amanda Miller

Ugh, do not like. And I disagree, that hair is terrible.

      • Anonymous

OUT.  This dress is doing her no favors.  No favors at all.  Neither is her stylist, hairdresser or makeup artist.

    • Anonymous

OUT.  The color and the weird thing where it’s kind of minimalist but with too many little details going on reminds me of a middle of the road Project Runway entry that I won’t remember for more than a few fleeting seconds.

    • Anonymous

Out for me, tho i am somewhat biased since i have never got her appeal…the dress looks way too much like”boudoir wear by Calvin Klein” i keep expecting to see a marabou mule peeking out from the hem….

    • Anonymous

Hmmm.  Not a fan of the dress at all on her.  I’m afraid she’s “out” from my perspective, but she’s definitely better than her recent attempts!

    • Anonymous

I don’t think the dress is too complicated, necessarily.  The problem is that it looks like it’s made out of really cheap material, which gives it a really casual feel that is at odds with the detailing.

    • Anonymous

Out. She looks undressed; this looks like a nightie, and her makeup is blah (her face looks bare except for the liner), and her hair looks out-of-the-shower.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=21413366 Evan Hart

Perhaps I’m way out of fashion or am much too big a fan of vintage styling, but what is wrong with the winged eyeliner? (I ask this as I self-consciously remember the winged liner on my own lids.)

      • Anonymous

Mine is slightly winged today too . . .

        • http://twitter.com/ms_smartiepants Beth M.

Mine too…and ScarJo’s winged eyeliner here is my favorite part of this whole look, frankly.

      • Anonymous

I wear it all the time too. LOVE cat-eyes and I don’t care if anyone thinks I look like a retro hooker. :)
I actually think it looks really pretty on ScarJo, but you know, it’s all a matter of taste.

        • Elizabeth Davis

I proudly rock the cat-eyes. I love them because they’re retro. If they make me look like a retro hooker, then so be it. A retro hooker is still more ladylike than a lot of the starlets walking the red carpet these days.

    • http://theargiehome.blogspot.com/ Gus Casals

I agree with your comments, but still it’s an IN for me. This really accents her womanly shape while looking event-appropriate. The hair is pretty and the makeup, although deserving a bit of bitchy-ness, is not THAT bad.

    • Anonymous

As one of the people who makes a lot of comments around here about her big head – I think it looks normal here! That sounds like that’s damning with faint praise but I do think she looks pretty.

    • Anonymous

Out – I want to give her an in, but I’m afraid that is not happening because of all the little things that are wrong. I think the blue nail polish pushed me over the edge to Out-ness.  Between her and Beyonce’s blue nail polish I’m kinda over that trend already.

And has she always had that tat on her forearm or is that a new thing?

    • Anonymous

OUT.  The fit is odd in my opinion, and her makeup does her no favors.

    • http://frockpaperscissors.blogspot.com/ kvlm

Out.  It’s good to see her in something that doesn’t have a late 50’s silhouette but this dress only looks good on her from the rib cage down.  The top looks like a swim suit and is overworked.  She totally needs to ditch her makeup artist.  And would it kill her to smile?

    • Anonymous

OUT.  She looks rather ordinary in that dress.

    • marilyn

Sheis a beautiful woman, but this dress is uninspired.  Maybe she was going for something safe.  But there is something about the color and the cut that is more off th rack than designer.  I give her an IN and the dress an OUT.  You figure it out.

    • R. L.

I have to agree with you TLo!  She’s moving in the right direction but it is still half-assed.

    • Ann M. Erickson

Girl looks cranky. She’d probably cut me, so I’ll give her a tepid IN.

    • http://twitter.com/taijuuuh Taija HU!

This looks like a bad Project Runway entry on a “MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF CURTAINS” challenge. I don’t care for it.

    • Anonymous

First, I wouldn’t blame her style choices on her divorce. Word is that the marriage was a sham, and how often did you ever even see them together? Never. In fact, that was supposed to be the reason for the divorce. I think this is more of a situation where she is now in her late 20s and is trying to find her adult style. When she first came onto the scene, she was a teenager who could pull off the 1940s inspired looks and hairdos she used to wear and people thought it was charming. Nowadays, she’s not the ingenue anymore and people have higher expectations. Give her time. She’ll figure it out.
I like the dress, but not on her. I like the hair, but not with that dress, and the makeup is a disaster, so I guess that’s an out.

    • Anonymous

Just what every Calvin Klein dress needs:  a big old multicolored tat, blue nail polish, and an overdose of eyeliner.  And there are fit problems with the dress.  OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/arodenha Alli

I don’t mind the eyeliner and hair, but that dress looks like a home ec final project – is it just me or are those seams doing really weird puckery things?  Whatever, it’s the best she’s look in a while so I’ll say IN this one time….but barely.

    • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

Better than the last few attempts, maybe. But IN? I know because I have seen it in the past that ScarJo can sport cats-eye makeup and look great. So what is up with this? And the hair, again, is an improvement, but nothing to get excited about. But the really problem is that dress, which makes her tits look smaller than they are and pulls them out to either side of her chest in an incredibly offputting way. The rest of the dress makes her torso just look like one long tube without any particular curve, and we all know this girl has a nice waist. From my perspective, the biggest problem is that she really needs definition at her natural waist, and the way this dress fits her, it’s almost like an empire waist, which is all wrong for her shape. OUT.

      Out

I like her bracelet, but her hair is only okay, the eyeliner is ridiculous, and the dress is a nightgown.

    • Terence Ng

I just really don’t like the dress. I think i get the idea, but the execution isn’t making it happen. OUT.

    • Anonymous

A step in the right direction, but the wall-eyed boobs and the wrinkling and pulling in the front don’t work for me.

      I’m saying she’s ajar…not in or out.

      • Anonymous

“Ajar…not in our out.”  Good one, AD!

    • Anonymous

What is with the blue nails?  Is this the in thing these days?  Because it looks ridiculous.

      • http://twitter.com/TheRedZavodnik Ginger

I ADORE funky colored nail polish, but ONLY on my toes…never on my fingers.

        • Anonymous

I have nothing against funky colored nail polish per se, but I think it looks off in this context.

          • Noelle Haland

I actually really like the blue nails, and I usually hate them. I think the shade is lovely here, but then again, I’m clearly in the minority in the commentariat since I think she looks smokin’ good here, even with the eyeliner.

      • Call me Bee

I wonder that myself.  I wore blue nails to a big black-tie event in about 1974–awoke the next morning and looked at my nails and almost ralphed.  Blue nails not good the morning after….

    • Anonymous

OUT.  She needs more support in the bust.

And what the heck is that blue thing on her arm?

    • Ruth Gottesman

Out. The hair is way too messy and doesn’t look deliberately so. And I totally agree about the dress; the various bits and pieces are not working for her. I agree it’s better but better isn’t necessarily good.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QP4RBTAZX6QTHZZSJ2YT7DGO7Q Brittany

Out. Half-assed is the exact word I was thinking of.

    • Anonymous

Out. I can’t get past the bodice on this getup.

    • Anonymous

She has a back boob and a tattoo that looks like the kind you wet and press on, so I say out with a capital OUT. And I hate these blue nails. They are excusable only if you have slammed your entire hand in the car door. Since it’s unlikely that every female celebrity recently photographed has done that, I’m guessing it’s another trend I can’t wait to see go.

    • Anonymous

      Blah that dress. Out.

    • lilibetp

Yeah, I know I’m terribly old-fashioned, but about the only thing I find less classy than a tattoo is a tattoo with a bunch of colors.

    • Anonymous

On the fence about this one.  I’ll give her an ‘IN’ because she doesn’t look horrible or offensive and she needs the confidence boost.

    • Anonymous

Some points for effort, but we have not crossed the finish line. She is sporting a kid’s birthday party tattoo and nails. And all that hoo-ha on the dress is giving me a nightie impression. All in all, too many thing not right for an in. Her hair does look pretty.

    • Ramona Boersma

In. First reaction is she looks great. The dress is a little weird, but still, she’s rocking it.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_K7VOQSAYZ7H2OBX6LOJNNIBSSE Amanda

Out. She’s too pretty to dress so ugly. I think she needs a hug and a new stylist.

    • Anonymous

Step in the right direction?  Are you guys sleep deprived?

She should know better than to try to put her body in Calvin Klein.   He designs for stick figures with no boobs.  She has breasts and hip curves.  This was never going to work.

      OUT.

    • Anonymous

A step in the right direction does not an “in” make.
Out. Bad make-up, pilates hair, and hate the nail polish color.

    • Anonymous

Oh, I say in. And is that black? Looks navy on my monitor.

    • http://profiles.google.com/adj.blair Adriana Blair

      Out. This dress is ugly.

    • Anonymous

      IN

my only real quibble with this look is really with her eye makeup…hate the liner.  I’m sooo glad to see her with a more subtle shade of lipstick…she often goes to the bright reds, which I loathe.  A more dramatic eye with the subtler lip, and some blush, would have done wonders for this overall look.

The dress…nice.  I don’t mind the “complicated”-ness of it, nor the color…she does look like she needs more color though…in accessories.   Also, her boobs look oddly wide.

    • Anonymous

I’m going with Fierce and Hot, jealous bitches.

half-assed, weird makeup, swimming in her dress, weird fit on the boobs
      sorry, ScarJo, you’re out

    • Call me Bee

Wow she looks so unhappy here.  Like “let’s just get this over with…”
I feel for the poor girl, so I say IN.  Cute dress and nice hair.  Weird cat-like eye make-up poorly done, but…maybe she was in a hurry….

    • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

Is she physically incapable of closing her mouth? I’ve been wondering.

    • http://www.facebook.com/charlotte.horseman Charlotte Horseman

In.  I don’t know if she’s “fierce” or “hot” here.  But, she looks like ScarJo again.  Naturally beautiful and sexy.

    • http://twitter.com/lenabena_ Elena

      Out. Just no.

    • Anonymous

I’m giving it an IN just because it’s SO close. I love the hair and make-up (guess you’ll be calling me “big face” all day because I don’t hate the swoopy eyeliner) and this dress is so much better than some of the others she’s been sportin’ of late. Also, I’m in a good mood today.

    • Cathy S

Well I was just going to avoid posting because I think she’s In and now all of you will point and laugh at me. But I think she looks really great. I love her hair and I think the dress is just complicated enough to be interesting. So point and laugh. I can take it.

    • http://twitter.com/jennawaterford Jennifer Ford

I think she looks great in spite of the minor issues. In!

    • Anonymous

I guess if we’re grading on the curve it’s in an in, but if we’re not, it’s a big old OUT.

Yes, the hair is better than in the picture you linked to, but it just looks like she raked it back with her fingers and clamped it in a barrette (or, for all we know, there’s a scrunchie back there!). The eyeliner looks like a 6 year old did it; maybe the same 6 year old who chose the blue nail polish. The dress and jewelry are fine, but not fine enough to overcome everything else.

    • http://twitter.com/ms_smartiepants Beth M.

Well, sign me up for the 1965 streetwalker look: I just love that winged eyeliner! Overall, the look is meh. The dress silhouette is good, but needs some major fit adjustments; and the hair is pretty, but too casual. I’d give her a lower-case “in” just for being so much improved. She looks lovely, but our memories are long, and we know she CAN look amazing!

    • Lexie

I agree that the bust area could be a bit simpler, but I have to giver her and IN for this being such a huge improvement from some of her more recent RC endeavors. I don’t mind the makeup, and I love the jewelry/nail color.

    • http://twitter.com/ohmybears48 Michelle Argento

I cant put my finger on why I dont like this. I just dont. I’m leaning towards her eye makeup.

    • Anonymous

I’m no makeup expert (as every photo supports), but it kind of looks like the eyeliner was done wrong.  Isn’t the winged eyeliner supposed to go up (kind of from the corner of the eye towards the outer point of the brow)?  Maybe I’m trying to being too detailed (’cause I really want to be able to do my own right), but is that what’s making her makeup look so amateurish?  Because it looks like she drew two lines coming out of her eyes…

    • Anonymous

OUT, but mainly due to fit issues, because i know i have seen her body looking smashing recently.

Also, please close your mouth, dear…do you have a retainer in that you are constantly tonguing?

    • Anonymous

You guys are generous today for giving her any props at all.  I can’t find a thing about this look that I like, plus I will get on my soapbox again about tattoos: they are just awful.  Absolutely no redeeming qualities at all.  She has gorgeous arms and flawless skin, and that….that….THING on there, it just ruins it.  OUT.

    • Anonymous

it’s a great dress, under most any other circumstances i would agree that its crown moulding would be too much but right here right now & on this person i think it is actually accentuating, creates form where would elsewise just be stasis. above the moulding i actually like the collar. only problem is the fit. still, more good than bad i think. didnt notice the eyeliner, wore it in its mark ii iteration.

    • Judy_J

I don’t like her hair, and that dress is cutting into her back and giving the impression of backfat, which she probably doesn’t have.  It would appear she needs some sort of foundation garment…her boobs are heading off in opposite directions.

    • Anonymous

You’re being way too easy on her.
You like her hair? That’s what I do with my hair to clean the bathroom.
Are her nails blue or black? Either way, bad choice.
The dress is (forgive me Calvin) overworked and ill-fitting on her — her bust looks too high, likes it’s trying to escape from the dress.

      A resounding OUT.

    • Anonymous

I love her, but wow this dress is unflattering! Quite like the hair, even if it is low-key, the earrings and the lipstick. Maybe some blotting paper would leave her slightly less shiny? Don’t mind the eyeliner. That dress, though… *cringes* Fit is terrible! It makes her look twice as wide as I am sure she is.

      So…OUT. I’M SORRY SCARJO!

    • Rand Ortega

It’s funny. When I 1st looked at the photo I thought, “It’s a black, form fitting gown. How could she f**K that up”. Then I looked closer. She’s 1 step a way from really looking put together. It’s neither effortless nor polished. It’s just… blah. It’s uninspired.

    • http://profiles.google.com/claudiaberry Claudia Berry

OUT – She really needs to pay attention to fit.  It looks like her boobs are running away from her torso and the neckline sort of cups away from the body.  She is barrel-chested, curvy as well, and with better tailoring she can look kick-ass, but not in this thing.  The hair is DIY, the makeup not polished enough, and the dress merits an “eh” at best.

    • MilaXX

Small IN for me. The fit of the dress looks slightly off, but overall I think it’s a good look. Also cat’s eye/winged liner is making a comeback like the bold red lip, so expect to see more of it on the RC.

I think she looks great. And I kind of hate her. So… IN.

    • Anonymous

One has to grade her on a curve.  She small in.

    • Anonymous

IN. I agree she could do better but this is so much an improvement.  Her hair and makeup (besides the cat eyeliner) looks pretty.

    • Anonymous

I’ll give it an In since she’s getting back on the right track.

    • Lisa

I’ll give it an in (note, that’s lower-case!) – doesn’t look like she’s put in much effort with anything.  Not the hair, the makeup or the dress.  But she doesn’t look scary or anything, you know?

OUT.  Better than before, but still not there.

    • Anonymous

Other that the eyeliner I think she looks great. IN

      In!

OUT- Half assed sums it up. She’s phoning it in-“Look, I have a sexy body. And…that’s about it.” Meh

    • butter nut

IN, cause it’s not atrocious.  but it looks like the lining to a much more interesting dress.

    • AWStevens

From waist to neck it looks like a swimsuit and from the waist down it looks too long.  However, boobs upward (and I don’t mind the winged eyeliner), she looks very My Week with Marilyn.

Winged eyeliner is minor quibble BECAUSE SHE’S HOT HOT HOT and so INNNN.

    • Anonymous

sympathetic in: tough six months; step in right direction; hopeful that this continues to trend positively.

    • Anonymous

The eyeliner is not quite right, but I love the rest of her makeup – her skin looks fresh and dewy and I love the soft pink lip color. But everything from the neck down is not really working for me – OUT.

Is it just me or does this dress not fit her quite right? In that last picture, she looks like she’s got a little bit of the skin on her back hanging over the fabric.

OUT. Half-assed is right. And I have no issues with winged eyeliner – could be totally fab http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2012/01/werq-dita-von-teese-in-alexis-mabille-couture.html. it’s winged eyeliner on her…

      IN.

To me, this look shortens her proportions. She looks tiny and squat here. OUT.

    • Anonymous

OUT. She looks like she is in an ill fitting slip with her hair pulled back, getting ready to do her make-up and then put her dress on.

    • CQAussie

Hot.  IN.  Even with the winged eyeliner and the weird rope-y things on her neckline.

    • Anonymous

I’m giving it an In although the dress reminds me of a slip I once owned. I can’t vote out on the winged eyeliner because once upon a time (or two, or three) I wore it myself. Me and all the other streetwalkers of 1968 Washington DC, if by streetwalker you mean regular women walking down the street :-p

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

I like the dress, but it fits her poorly. Sad because she is so stunning. OUT, but getting better.

    • Anonymous

Hmm, i was going to go with ‘out’ but i think she needs the encouragement so ‘in’ as a favour.

    • Anonymous

      OUT is all i’gona say.

    • Anonymous

She looks high in these pics

    • Anonymous

Def. improving … so an IN to encourage the upward trajectory.
I like the soft/subtle hair and makeup a lot (eyeliner wings notwithstanding – quibbly).  Keep that stylist on retainer, Miss Scarlett, and pump up the clothing guy.

      O.U.T.

Bitch has money and slammin’ body to do something far better than this. No excuse.

The dress seems ill-fitted, and she looks sort of…unfresh. Like she pulled a Gaga and slept in her hair, makeup and outfit. OUT.

    • Anonymous

almost in, but out in the end.   i hate tattoos.  hate hate hate.  she needs more color in her face, and she needs NO color on that arm.  can’t she cover that thing?  and i am still waiting for a real hairstyle.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

IN.  she doesn’t look bad, she just doesn’t look great.  And I agree with Sara_B, she looks sad and droopy.

    • Anonymous

Tepid IN. Only because this such and improvement. Like the hair and I don’t have a problem with the eyeliner. I don’t love the dress and it doesn’t appear to fit properly in the bust, but I don’t hate it.

    • Anonymous

dear scarlett:  i love your beautiful face and especially your big sensuous lips, but girl- lose the cat eyeliner.  and do something with your hair (not feeling the love with t-lo).  your dress looks a little like a nightgown, which is not all bad, but if i see another black dress…i guess i have to give you an out,  but buck up, honey.  no man is worth a fashion depression.  and you are faabulous, no matter what.

Out. She looks like she is wearing a slip under a nightie.
