In or Out: Florence Welch in Erdem

Posted on February 14, 2012

On the last episode of T Lo & Flo, her kind but fabulous gay uncles sat Flo down and told her that she needed to step away from the Grande Dame couture looks because they were a bit aging and starting to make her look stuffy. She responded by dressing like a backup singer for Prince. Hilarity and hijinks ensued.

But we’re torn on this latest attempt.

Florence Welch attends the ELLE Style 2012 Awards in London in an Erdem dress.

Erdem Spring 2012 Collection/Model: Linnea Regnander

Because we really love this dress. More importantly, we love it on her. And it’s certainly not grandiose. The thing is, it’s not really the direction we were thinking of the last time we visited this topic. It’s not quite as young and rock and roll as we think she should be right now. But it’s hard to say that she looks bad here. Well. The hair looks bad but that’s a story for another day. Or at least another episode of T Lo & Flo.

Voting on Christina Hendrick’s salute to L.A. Law is still open, darlings.

I do like the dress, but why does she look so haggard?! Is it a combination of the hair and bad lighting? Exhaustion?

      • Anonymous

Really. The dress is good for her, I think (not crazy about the matching shoes) , but her hair/makeup is off. Still gets an IN.

        • Anonymous

I mean, I know she’s going for some sort of Pre-Raphaelite model/Aesthetic Movement woman shtick in general, but she doesn’t need to look like she actually *has* typhoid fever…

          • Anonymous

             more like post-raphaelite tranny

            • Anonymous

Sorry, but can we avoid using that kind of slur here? It’s kind of jarring running across them in a place I’d hope most of us consider safe.

      • http://twitter.com/NC_Meg Megan

Seriously, she looks totally exhausted. Take a rest, girl. It’ll be ok.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=580241410 Iyad Hilal

She needs better make up and hair, she naturally looks old and she does herself no favors with her style choices.

        • Anonymous

She looks so pretty in her music videos though, so it must be possible to make her look younger than 45 *somehow*…

      • Anonymous

Her features look more masculine than normal, somehow, too.  Like the shadows are exaggerating the lines of her cheekbones to her chin and the proportion of her cheekbones to her jawline.  Which is odd because she doesn’t look like that in other photos or in video.  One of the awesome striking things about her beauty is how her bone structure falls outside the secondary sex characteristic bell curve, but this photo is way off from what I’m used to seeing her look like.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PVIY3NBCZJAJNFWDBCWG2DMKL4 Jen R

She has an odd-looking face to begin with – reminds me of Patrick Swayze in To Wong Foo… Her jaw is so square and the hair makes it look really heavy.

Seriously, though, I think it’s hair, lighting, makeup and a lack of airbrushing. Sorry, but the pictures of her that don’t have this kind of a haggard appearance all look like they’ve been airbrushed.

    • Anonymous

That is a really pretty dress, and the shoes are fine, too. It’s her hair that’s awful!  I would give the dress an IN, though, if we were voting.

    • Anonymous

OUT.  I don’t think the dress works for her at all.

    • Anonymous

Nice dress, but still is too old for this young thing.

    • http://twitter.com/yessveee Sarah Veenstra

love the shoes, but that’s it. My Grandmother’s curtains in dress form + plus the hair + makeup? OUT from the calves up.

      • Anonymous

Yes! I wish designers would get the ugly upholstery fabric choices out of their systems, and quick.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1084733830 Kate Andrews

I think her hair needs a trim, and I’m not wild about her shoes.

    • Anonymous

I think with better hair and one good, edgy accessory (bracelet?) all of her problems would be solved. It really is a kickass dress for her.

      • Anonymous

        Oh, and marginally IN.

      • Anonymous

My thoughts exactly. As it stands, OUT.

    • Anonymous

This is very hard to look at, but maybe it would have been better with some black fuck me pumps? I hope she is taking her vitamins.

    • Anonymous

You’re totally right: the dress is lovely and it looks lovely on her, but the hair is a hot mess which is making her look terrible, when she should look fabulous. The shoes barely manage to cover half of her toes and she’s wearing at least one too many rings. But I’ll vote IN because that is truly a lovely dress which suits her.

    • Anonymous

UGH. When I look at her, all I see is Hipster Golden Girl.

      • Anonymous

        Ha!

    • http://twitter.com/GaraStJames Gara St. James

Love the shoes and dress, but the hair isn’t working. Did they just wake her up and push her out on the red carpet?

    • http://twitter.com/amndad amanda lynn

      if she washed her hair…

    • Anonymous

Hate the matchy shoes. If the Dog Days are over, why resort to Grranimal clothing choices?

    • Anonymous

I don’t like the way this looks on her at all. It does nothing for her shape and I agree that she needs to stick to more rock n roll looks. Also, she is in dire need of help in the hair and makeup department. She’s definitely not as unattractive as she looks in these photos. OUT

    • http://twitter.com/GiverOfCheese DKBB

Oh, that hair is just sad….but the dress is quite nice. :)

    • Anonymous

i cannot believe that is the face of a 25 yr old…the hair and makeup have got to go…

      • Anonymous

She’s 25?! I had no idea of her age and that is shocking.  Holy schnikes. Yeah, she kinda needs to ditch the Tim Burton hair/make-up team she’s using.

The dress is so lovely, but she’s not working it. Out like Kelly Ripa’s bellybutton.

      • Anonymous

Right? I thought I was looking a bit rough at 25, but suddenly I feel so young! Better hair & makeup stat Ms. Florence, it can be done!

    • Anonymous

OUT.  She might have flipped it to an IN with, I don’t know, a smile?  Have we ever seen one from Flo? Seems like she always looks like someone just asked her to work the weekend.

    • Anonymous

She desperately needs a makeup consultation. It would make a world of difference for all of her outfits.

    • Anonymous

What’s with her hair….it just looks dirty and greasy and stringy.  What a shame to do that to such a gorgeous garment!

    • Anonymous

      OUT.

    • Anonymous

I am thrilled that we are seeing more prints on everyone these days. This one is very pretty.

And yet, I vote Out because I don’t think this is her dress. She needs a cuter, sassier, shorter dress, maybe with a flirty skirt. You know who could make that? Kenley! This style here is almost matronly, too conservative for Miss Flo. And why does she look so much older than 25? I’m pretty sure there is a beautiful woman hiding somewhere in there. Lookit those amazing cheekbones. And gorgeous hair color.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MBZQXGWCTBDTAZMEM4S2EJUNUQ Katie

I think she looks wonderful except for her head. :( I’ll give her an IN because I love it from the neck down. I don’t think she needs to do rock and roll, because her music is a little bit different anyway – I think a different style suits her.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=506473106 Mori Clark

dress is great but by god, she looks ill. go home and rest, honey.

    • Isana Leshchinskaya

if not for that thing on her head. OUT by a hair.

    • Anonymous

In for her. And yes, I meant to be damning with faint praise. The girl likes what the girl likes, and I can’t fault her or anyone for that. Unfortunately, she seems to like looking prematurely aged. High collars tend to have that effect is one isn’t careful, as does long, overgrown hair, red lipstick and an apparent disdain for moisturizing regularly.  She looks fine here, but she could look great with a little more effort.

    • Anonymous

OUT – I LOVE the dress, but her hair really is for shit.

    • Anonymous

I like the dress and it suits her pretty well, but the makeup and hair are not good at all. The lipstick is so harsh and severe, and maybe that’s not the best shade of red for her?

I’m on the fence with my vote.

    • Anonymous

So, this is the second time I’ve seen RC shoes where the toe of the shoe is apparently only meant to cover the big toe and second toe. Is this a thing? Because… no.

    • Joyce VG

Love it!  Yeah her hair looks limp but she’s edgy!  IN.

    • Anonymous

Very lady. And it’s fine. But.
In my day (oh, boy, do I sound like grandpa, or what?) pop stars didn’t wear designer clothes, at least not in a way that put DESIGNERS above a musician’s personal identity. People had their own looks (or lack thereof), and things were a lot more interesting.  Now it’s just a parade of singers dressed and coifed to look like the women who escort Academy Award winners off stage. Who needs it?  Florence Welch strikes me as exactly the kind of pop singer that should have her own look, and stay as far as she can from fashion shows and labels and stylists.

      • Anonymous

Yes, yes, yes! In my day too! Well put BB.

      • Anonymous

Oh, also: OUT. Because I don’t see her; I see a dress.

    • http://www.facebook.com/vsticker Vera E Sticker

I like the dress, although it could use a belt on her, but she looks horrible from the neck up. CVS makeup?

    • Anonymous

Out, this just isn’t working, it’s not her dress.

    • Anonymous

I CANNOT believe this woman is 25.  It floored me when I found out.  I assumed she was in her 40s.  Not just in these photos, every time I see her.  TLO, you guys love pointing out when other ladies look older… why no mention of Flo here?

      • Anonymous

I think they have in the past. This actually looks YOUNG for her.

    • Sara__B

It IS a great dress for her, but everything else is wrong, from her hair and makeup to the rings and shoes. Styling is important. OUT. (I hope she’s taking care of herself, because she looks utterly haggard and exhausted.)

    • Anonymous

Neckline, sleeves and hemline, as well as the overall silhouette, are modest in a respectable middle-aged lady kind of way.  The print suggests something else.  It has a kind of dissonance that actually really works and so I give it an IN.

    • Anonymous

      She sure loves a print.

    • Anonymous

IN. one of my favourite brands on one of my favourite artists!

    • Anonymous

It’s hard to say she looks bad here?

Nope, it’s really not. Let me show you: She looks bad here.

      See? Piece o’ cake.

    • Anonymous

Why are we not talking about the awfully unfitting matchy shoes? OUT for those alone, overlords.

    • Anonymous

In. Maybe I’m stroking out lately and voting for all these buttoned-up, printy little dresses, but they’re just so against-the-grain. Love.

    • Greg Yoder

I don’t really like the print on that dress, though, to be fair, I would like it just fine as wallpaper for a powder room.

      Um, OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

      OUT – It’s zombie Welch!

    • Anonymous

I just don’t think she suits very feminine, ladylike clothes. They make her face look more masculine in contrast. Whereas more androgynous things bring out her femininity.

    • Anonymous

In but I love her so I am probably not seeing the flaws that I should.

    • nancy

I like it, that print doesn’t look wallpapery to me at all. But it seems like it should be on an older woman, not a young thing like her! She just looks older and tired.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/OQZLYZFARQRYTBEIJDYHMYUL6A Claire

All I want is to see this girl rock some leather pants and kick-ass shoes.

    • Anonymous

IN for the dress, OUT for everything else.

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

Hmmm. The red lipstick works on the model, but for some reason it makes Florence look like she’s in drag….  I do love the dress, however the shoes….  Gosh I’m torn, give me a minute….

Yeah, I think I’m going to have to go with OUT.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

The dress looks great. She looks bad. I feel like the mom in ‘Peggy Sue Got Married’ but come on Flo. Such a pretty girl, such a pretty face, why do you want to hide it under all that hair?
I understand mixing sweet with edgy but this is mixing ‘chic’ with ‘I couldn’t be bothered’ and that never works.  Just looks like she ran out of steam.

      • Sara__B

“Mixing chic with ‘I couldn’t be bothered’ ” is exactly how she looks. Wish I’d written that!

    • Anonymous

Cute dress- but why does she look like a haggard David Bowie (circa 1974)? This is a honorable mention OUT.

    • Anonymous

OUT .. I am tired of her looking like she is 45.

    • http://profiles.google.com/thekate Kate Musgrove

In, even though hair and makeup are not the best.

    • Andrea Weymouth

      yuck!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1253053236 Belle Burnett

The hair and makeup (and expression) make me think, “Hey, Florence IS A MAN. Cool!”
I really hate the way those shoes look on her feet, very uncomfortable.
      The dress? Meh.

    • Martha Deutsch

out. liking the dress and shoes, but can’t with the hair.

    • http://www.facebook.com/janet.selman Janet Selman

      In.

    • Anonymous

Lovely dress, don’t like it on her.

    • Anonymous

In because the dress is great, but she seriously looks like she needs a nap or something.

    • Anonymous

It looks like what Kenley would make for her in a challenge.

    • Anonymous

The dress is gorgeous but not on her. I’m not sure whose dress it is, but I love the print. How can she go out looking so haggard? Has she never heard of makeup? And that hair – good lord. I think she is talented and has a great body for clothes, but she needs to put in a little effort.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

The fit on that dress is amazing, but without something to give the floral an edge it still feels kind of matronly.  However – she’s never boring, it’s an improvement, and at least she didn’t go with an expected shoe.

I’m giving her an encouraging IN!

    • Anonymous

      IN. Love. Gorgeous. Love her.

    • Anonymous

What?  Is this ‘Gingers that Look Like Shit’ Day?  Girl needs a makeover, an intervention, a month at the spa, SOMEthing.  ‘Cuz, Good God, she looks raggedy.  Everything south of the neck is fine.  The overall impression is OUT.

And I’d like to vote ‘out’ again on Christina Hendricks, please.

    • Anonymous

The print is too much on her. Out.

    • Anonymous

I love the dress, but that’s not her dress. Why oh why does this very young woman always insist on looking like she’s on the wrong side of 40?

    • http://twitter.com/IamDaBee Antonija Mitt

The dress is..ok.  And it looks ok on Flo, but with her annoying hair adn dour face here, I have to say OUT.  And I still cant quite believe she’s around 25 years old.  She must have an old soul….which is ok, but it shows.

    • Anonymous

I guess the dress is beautiful. But she reminds me of those guys from the Hasty Pudding Club at Harvard. . . Sorry luv, I’m gonna say OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/karenrubyleo Karen

I think the dress is beautiful and its the kind of thing that florence could usually work the hell out of but she looks so dull and drained that its taking away from the dress.

    • Anonymous

Since I don’t think it’s fair to penalize her for looking really ugly from the neck up, I’ll go with a tentative IN. But God, from the neck up she looks busted.

      • Anonymous

Yikes! There are ways of phrasing things, y’know? Just promise me you’ll never go for a career in international diplomacy.

Truth is, though, she does look exhausted and pale.

    • Anonymous

It is not young and rock and roll, but it looks good on her.  Not the perfect look for every occasion, but In.

    • http://www.facebook.com/sorana.tarmu Sorana Tarmu

What’s wrong with these fab ladies dressing like octogenarians?? Girl, this is not your dress. OUT!!!

    • Anonymous

i really don’t get her.  at all.  and i think the dress is fug.

    • Anonymous

Jeezus, she looks like Keith Richards twin sister, and in 2012 that is not a compliment. Can’t place why, but she just looks awful. Maybe a better haircut and a smile? Some time spent by a sunny bay window?

      Sorry, but I’m an OUT.

    • Anonymous

In on the dress.  With regard to her hair, she looks much better with the bangs than when she grew them out – beyond that I have no expertise.

    • Anonymous

I say “In.”  It’s definitely an improvement!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=610791985 Aniela Marie Perry

Out. All I can think is that she should maybe at least smile a little. The disaffected super model facial expression she’s always wearing makes her face look like a 60 year old chain smoker.

      • Anonymous

        You got it.
Seriously, that hair!  Even a smile would have trouble breaking through that ratty mess.

    • Lisa

MUCH better!  I was going to make a “sofa” joke, but she really does look lovely.

    • Sophie Collier

Wow, she looks about twenty years older than she is.  I’m going to blame the lighting this time….

    • Anonymous

In.. I’m on the Florence Welch love train.

    • Anonymous

Not just her hair, her face looks like she’s been on a bender. Maybe she just got off a long flight or something. I’ll grant her that much. The dress does look gorgeous on her.

    • Anonymous

I really like this dress!  I think it’s time for her to get a different hairstyle…shorter, maybe (which she could totally do with the whole Art Deco/20s thing she’s been going for…fingerwaves would be fab).  This is starting to look lank, and dragging her down a bit.

      Still, she’s Flo, who I worship…so she’s still IN.

    • Anonymous

I love this dress – and I love it on her – IN! Go girl.

    • Anna Tree

The makeup is way harsh. But I can’t out an Erdem dress. IN.

    • Anonymous

From the neck down, fabulous. From the neck up, poorly executed drag Florence Welch in a terrible wig. I… guess I lean IN? Barely?

    • Anonymous

IN. The hair sucks, but her hair always does. I love it on her – glad she left the twee hat to the model. Love the shoes.

    • Judy_J

The dress is pretty, but she again looks way older than her years. She needs to hire a really good hair & makeup person.

    • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

Someone should just shave her head already.  She clearly has no respect for her hair.  Also, OUT OUT OUT!  Ridiculous shoes, really, plus I don’t think the dress works on her at all.  And the make-up.  Do I really need to say anything about it?

    • Anonymous

Great dress, especially since it draws focus away from her hair.

      Cut your bangs!

    • butter nut

i like the dress, but she looks a mess.  she didn’t even act like she tried doing anything with that hair.  and as nice as the dress is, on that background, she looks like a test pattern & it’s twitching out my eyes!  i call laziness – OUT!

    • Susan Crawford

The dress fits her beautifully – not at all sure I like the print. It looks like some bathroom wallpaper my aunt had that was based on Raoul Dufy Parisian street scenes back in the 1950’s. Now I understand this Florence Welch is spposed to be in her twenties, amirite? Because if she IS in that age group, she looks as though she has really packed a whole lotta hard livin’ into a cople decades. Please, Miss Welch: you really DO need to do something with your hair and make-up. Please!

I’m going to have to go with an OUT here for the hair, make-up and . . . what ARE those shoes doing? Your dress is interesting and you are wearing it well – but please work on those all-important finishing touches the way Uncles T and Lo advised you. You’ll thank them and their Bitter Kittens in the end.

      • http://twitter.com/carelessriver Cassie (C.M.W.)

Eff me blind. According to Wikipedia, she is younger than I am by five months.

I thought, “Wow, that’s a woman in her thirties who really needs to learn how to play down the wrinkles.”

This is as mindboggling as finding out that Norda Mullen is actually in her fifties. Woman looks younger than I do (to say nothing of Miss Welch). Seriously, Google her. She’s the Moody Blues’ new(ish) flautist.

        • Susan Crawford

Wow! Obviously, Norda Mullen has some unbelievable genes – or else she has found some miracle creme gathered by elves at midnight under a full moon. Yes – THERE is a woman who looks incredibly young. Florence, have your people call her people, OK? I actually love the strong features of Florence Welch, and being a redhead myself, I do love her hair color – but there are SO many wonderful ways to play up those assets.

          • http://twitter.com/carelessriver Cassie (C.M.W.)

Okay, I about died at the miracle creme line. And then considered it must be true. ;)

    • Anonymous

She gets an IN but only because the dress looks so good on her.

Flo please stop acting as a hangar for looks off the runway. Some styling would not kill you

    • MilaXX

It’s a pretty dress, but it’s not her dress. This is a dress for a woman in her 40’s. SJP would look fab in this. If Flo wants to keep the hippy hair she needs to dress in a ay that doesn’t fight that look because right now the two are clashing.

    • http://twitter.com/carelessriver Cassie (C.M.W.)

For once, I am split right down the middle. I sort of like the dress, but dear Lord, who does her hair and makeup and can we fire that person by fiat? IN because, well, she’s freaking Florence Welch, but IN with a caution.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jane-Morris/1076502799 Jane Morris

If she’s going to tea IN. If she’s going to anything else OUT>

    • Anonymous

I don’t know, I still don’t like it…she needs a lower neckline and something that gives her some curves, and also more vivid colors (maybe jewel-tones, not sure there), but somehow I fell this outfit looks washed-out and stuffy at the same time, and the poor dear needs some qualified gays to help her with her hair and make up, pronto..her type of face calls for some long layers to soften it, the bangs give  her a harsh look…

    • Anonymous

She looks like a for real transvestite. Every time.

    • Toto Maya

She just looks so deflated, like a popped balloon, or a toy that needs winding or something. I don’t know, I’m out of metaphors.

    • http://twitter.com/ennisamy Amy Ennis

I just don’t get her physical appeal. I don’t think she’s very attractive, and I’ve yet to see her in anything I remotely like.

    • Anonymous

I don’t think she should have just pallette swapped the shoes from the runway version, but there is no denying this is a fabulous dress on the right woman. IN.

    • http://twitter.com/wednesdaydreams Natalie

great dress, but she needs color in her entire face, not just a swab of lipstick. IN still..

    • Anonymous

She cheapens everything she touches. The slouchy posture and the stringy hair are totally consistent with the screechy, pitch-poor voice.

    • Anonymous

I don’t get the ‘shoes’ (manacles?) but in, fab dress, hard to wear but she looks great.

    • Anonymous

From the neck up, i can’t even look at her. From the neck down it’s love!!! I’give her an IN but she really must consider doing something for her hair…

    • Anonymous

That is so NOT her dress.

    • Stefanos Mantyla

Guys! You forgot the IN/OUT prompts!

Not that I need them to say IN, though. Just saying.

    • Aly Light

The dress is cute. I typically hate her style. Her face looks awful here (bad make-up?) but I’ll give it an IN.

    • Anonymous

An IN, but only from the neck down. Her hair is tragic.

IN. But I think she looks great in anything.

    • Anonymous

      Eh. Innish.

    • Anonymous

The dress does look good on her, but the shoes are tragic.  Not only ugly, but they look uncomfortable-like she’s only got 2 or 3 toes in them.  She could have made this a bit more rock ‘n roll with the right accessories.  The hair needs a good washing, maybe a hot oil treatment.  The makeup is not doing her any favors.  I hate to say Out b/c she looks good in the dress, but the rest of it is falling flat.  So Out.

    • Anonymous

I keep having to remind myself that this chick is only 25!!!  She’s younger than my baby… the dress is in, her hair is out..

    • Anonymous

TLo & Flo……you are too funny.  I rather like this dress and its length, even the 3/4 sleeves (although I could do without that pink poppy plastered right in the middle).  I hate her hair & bangs but that does seem to be her signature look so she gets points for sticking with it even when, I imagine, stylists are begging her to change.  I’ll give her an IN, but it’s not enthusiastic.

She looks like Joey Ramone in drag.

      Great dress and shoes!

I like that she’s switching it up with the dress, but I really wish she’d done something with the face and hair – would some lipstick and an updo kill her?

I’m not crazy about the shoes or hair, but in.

I don’t like the dress. It looks like something Julie Andrews should be wearing.

BTW I clicked on the link to see the Prince back-up dancer outfit and, seriously?!  Have you never seen Prince?  That’s way too covered up.  Maybe she could be a Neil Diamond back-up dancer.

Haha, OUT. That print is definitely interesting, but her hair/makeup is a wreck and the matchy shoes were a terrible choice. Hard to make the argument that the dress suits her when she looks so godawful in it.

that poor dear; she looks so bad.  the dress is wonderful!!  but she just needs a nap?  a shower?

      I think she’s a drag queen

I love the hat on the model.  Florence REALLY needs a visit to the hair salon.

OUT. Wearing the whole runway look head-to-toe (sans the hat)? Out.

      IN!

I think a different neckline would have done wonders for this dress on her. It just looks too buttoned up and stuffy this way. A gentle ‘in’ from me. She’s almost there.

She really needs to fire whoever has been styling her for public appearances and hire whoever styled her for her album cover. As for this look, it’s a big OUT.

She’s back to looking 50 years old in the face again.

      In

IN, from the neck down.  Love the dress and the shoes.  The hair and makeup leave a lot to be desired.  Still, comparatively speaking, this is IN.

This is the wrong direction.  It makes me wish she’d go back to the Chanel etc.  Her face doesn’t go with these flowery things.  and/or–maybe she needs to think more like our other space oddity, Tilda Swinton.  Seems like they have similarly striking looks and ways of being that are just not going to go with these flowery dresses.

      Much improved!

Out.  Not her dress if she wants to maintain her indie rock cred.  And the poor thing looks like she is 25 going on 60.   I want the “Stevie Nicks Flo” back!

IN from the next down.  I wish she would do something with that hair.

    • Noelle Haland

The dress is nice, the hair is boring, and the shoes are hideous. Still, I say IN.

why does this 25 year old always end up looking twice her age and bored with it? do love that dress though.

No bueno, sister, no bueno.  That is not your dress, or your color, or your shoe.

Why is her hair always so terrible?
