Girl, That’s Not Your Dress: Alison Brie

Posted on February 24, 2012

Oh, Miss ALISON. Just WHAT are we going to do with you, dear?

Alison Brie attends the Global Green USA’s 9th Annual Pre-Oscar Party in a The Hellers dress.

The Hellers Alissa Dress

She is so flipping adorable; and such a funny, talented, quirky actress. So it KILLS us to see her on the red carpet, because the gal just can’t seem to maximize her assets that well. In a way, it’s very endearing that she’s so bad with clothes. But really, it’s frustrating, because she could so easily be a knockout but she’s hiding that light under some very awkward-looking bushels.

This could be a very cute look if she’d just wear it correctly. The skirt’s sitting a skosh too high on her and the blouse is a laughably sloppy mess. To make matters worse, she matched her accessories almost exactly to her skirt. This is an outfit that desperately needed pops of color, not a purse and pair of shoes that blend in. To be honest, we never would have recommended this look for a public event just because it’s guaranteed not to photograph well and almost guaranteed to look a little sloppy after a limo ride.

Sweetie, set this look free so it can land in Dianna Agron’s backyard. And for god’s sake, hire a stylist.

Alison Brie can wear a burlap sack covered with dog hair and I won’t care a bit.

    • EveEve

It is delightful to see the cast of Mad Men  increasing their presence on the red carpets again; a not-so-subtle indication that the PR buildup to next season is starting!

      • Eva_baby

Holy cow, Mad Men has been off my radar so long that  her Annie from Community has trumped her Trudy from Mad Men for me.

  • kimmeister

Well, at least she doesn’t have visible bra, like the model.

    Those shoes are awfully cute.

    • ccm800

Yes!  What witchery is it that keeps it from being so see-through on her? Lined?

    •  the visible bar looks better and makes the dress less quirky grandma to me.

  • annie_wonder

Love her and love her shiny shiny hair. Hate how that dress went SO wrong.

    • girliecue

Right? Whenever I see her I still can’t believe I heard the word “bloodsport” breeze off her adorable lips.

BTW, love your Disqus handle. Then again, my mom’s name is Annie so I might be a little biased…

  • According to imdb, she’s almost 30! This is not the outfit for a 30-year-old woman!

    • mike__tv

    • Alison’s pretty young; we try not to sexualize her.

  • gdougs

I think it looks better when the skirt is more structured, like on the model. And the matching accessories have to go. But I think there’s potential!

  • The whole outfit just looks cheap, even on the model – it looks like something I’d buy from Target and wear to the office (with a sassy little cardigan, of course). And Alison is right up there with Ellie Kemper in that they’re both adorable and I love their shows but I just wish they’d both hire a damn stylist already because they never look good on the red carpet.

  • A skosh too high?  It’s practically part of her bra 🙁  I do like her a lot but this is awful.

  • lrhoff

I do like the bedsheet print of the skirt….can I get it in a king size, please?  And do you have a matching duvet cover with pillows?

  • hughman

The skirt looks like it’s made from a seersucker bedspread at a Best Western.

  • That is SUCH a Dianna Agron dress! I thought that was her in the promo photo.

  • Pupioso

  • mjude

when i saw this i thought of st. patricks day.

  • Gayer_Than_Thou

It just doesn’t work, and I think what we’re seeing here is an outfit that doesn’t work at all — it’s helped by a skinny model and (I suspect) some artful pinning and tucking that could not be reproduced in real life.

    • mike__tv

I’m still laughing at your handle ‘Gayer_Than_Thou’ I would love to have witnessed the argument where this was uttered.

  • judybrowni

Umm, honey, maybe buying separates at the Limited, and wearing them out of season — it’s February, even in Los Angeles — might not be a stellar red carpet look.

The first (and now only) thing in my head after looking at this was “twee as fuck”. Her pelvic thrust posing isn’t helping the shape (or lack there of) of this look, either.

And I’m not even going to get started on the hair.

  • indigospade

Annie’s young. We try not to sexualize her.

    • I was about to post the exact same comment. Glad I checked 🙂 I don’t care much about her clothes anyways because COMMUNITY’S COMING BACK!

      • kittle

It is?  OMG, OMG, OMG, OMG
        *runs around in circles*

        • mike__tv

OMG OMG OMG Is it? Chases Kittle in circles.

        • YES! 15 March! 8/7 central. WATCH IT LIVE because the network is watching with big cranky scowls.

    • Barnitosupreme

But Alison on the other hand, feel free to sexualize her like crazy.

  • butterflysunita

That skirt is adorable.  But yes, the outfit looks messy and not quite right.  Might be one of those looks that only really work on the runway.

  • joe_tey83

It’s like she’s playing a character in a comedy who has a habit of wearing all her skirts high.

  • serenitynow02

She’s so pretty, but she is wearing Dakota Fanning’s dress.

I can’t wait to see what Trudy will be up to when MM comes back.

    • charlotte

This is definitely still better than that bulky peach-colored maternity dress Trudy wore in that one scene.

  • Rand Ortega

That ain’t nobody’s dress! It’s hiddy. Though since she’s so adorable, she certainly is giving pulling it off the old college try.

  • MilaXX

I agree with you, but I can also see why she choose this. Looking at the model it looks like something that would work on her. At least the hair and makeup look good, and YAY! for Community coming back

    • testytess

It looks to me as though she has it turned 90 degrees. The wrap edge that should be in the back is on the side. The pleats are positioned wrong…but it’s still not doing her any favors.

  • sagecreek

Unks, you have completely indoctrinated me. Even before I read your commentary, I thought, “now, Dianna Agron could rock that!”

  • NC_Meg

It’s not a great dress at all but why does it fit the model so well and look so big on her? Girl, get that think tailored. Also, she and Cathy Cambridge need to share their shiny hair secrets.

    • dschubba

If I had to guess, she DID have it tailored. Alison Brie’s on the busty side, and I bet she tried to disguise them by loosening up the bodice and then attempted to de-frump the situation by messing with the hem.

      • NC_Meg

I didn’t realize she was busty but a Google image search confirmed it. That makes sense now but geeze. I think I’d have just chosen another dress.

        • BerlinerNYC

OMG, she is legendarily busty. On Community, Abed and Troy named their monkey “Annie’s Boobs” in honor of her rack. In the outtakes, they show the filming of the scene where her bust was poking Jeff in the face, and how hard it was to get that right without making it just vulgar. That show is genius.

    • dschubba

  • Jecca2244

I can’t believe i’m asking this, but is this Trudie from Mad Men?!

    • Yes. Alison played Trudie on Mad Men, and she plays Annie on Community.

  • Jecca2244

I can’t believe i’m asking this, but is this Trudie from Mad Men?!

  • I do love her so and love both of her shows and that is why I must chime in and urge her to get a stylist. Beautiful hair, lovely make-up, where’s that little yellow number that Anika was wearing?  But in a jewel tone…that would be so lovely.

  • kbuchholznp

Definitely a swing and a miss here. HArd to believe that this was designed as an ensemble to begin with. UG.

  • kingderella

    oh dear.

    but i love her.

  • I love Allison Brie (six seasons and a movie!), she’s adorable. I agree about the outfit.

  • greatscoutm

She is adorable but this looks like Target salutes the U.S Open.

  • Jessica O’Connell

Yeah…not a fan… but I have to say, it would fit Dianna Agron very well, I agree. Hell, the model even looks a little like Dianna Agron!

  • vmcdanie

I actually love this on her. It just looks like something she’d wear. I’d kind of hate to see her super polished. She looks cute and quirky and this, I maintain, is perfect.

(ok, taking a second look and the top IS a little bit of a mess so, almost perfect.)

    •  The top, I think, looks a little cool.  It’s that skirt that looks like lining fabric that’s bothering me.

      • vmcdanie

Looking closer, it’s not the top, it’s the waistline where the top and the skirt meet where things get messy. Nevertheless, Allison Brie should stay just the way she is.

  • bitchfacela

Alli that is not your dress girl.

  • Lisa

Oh, wow, yeah…. HOO BOY, not her dress.

  • …the model looks like Dianna Agron.

  • nannypoo

How is this an outfit? It’s a little skirt and a little blouse, not particularly related to each other. The concept of “outfit” seems to connote some kind of theme or connection that is missing here. The shoes are pretty.

  • norseofcourse

The outfit is NOT good. So I choose to ignore it and focus on her – and the fact that I love her for actually having the adorable personality Zooey D. works so hard at trying to emulate.

  • random_poster

I LOVE her hair.  So shiny and pretty!!  Yes, please hire a stylist, Miss Alison, to make the most of what you have.

  • I don’t think that’s anyone’s dress.  Looks like a cute beach outfit, actually.  But I really dig her shoes and want them very much.

  • quiltrx

I love the fabric of the skirt.  That’s pretty much all I like.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

i really like this little outfit–not for me, but on someone for whom it would be more appropriate. it’s difficult to figure out whats wrong w/ it here but i think you are correct by climbing onto the fit & proportion highway. also the top looks like it needs
something that may no longer be made: a leotard-type snap bottom crotch. irritating to wear, yes [i remember them] but the shirtsides wouldnt be flapping around so distractingly had the blouse come w/ this feature. still wouldnt help the height of the waist & the weird length of the hem, however.

  • pdquick

Some pops of color would help, but girl, that is not your haircut!

  • bitterk

Is that a dress or a handkerchief?   It’s hideous.

  • understateddiva

Definitely not her dress.  Also, definitely my shoes.  Gimme.

  • Bozhi

    That blouse is a mess.

  • She is my biggest girlcrush and I think she looks gorgeous all the time.

That said, it is safe to say that she has definitely looked, um, more gorgeous than this.

  • Laylalola

I’m sure she’s tiny — she’s just got a figure like a lot of non-celebrity women (she’s shortwaisted or her waist doesn’t go in dramatically compared to her breasts and hips, even though it’s probably a 26 inch waist). And it’s actually very hard and frustrating to dress such a figure in a way that’s flattering (nevermind if you’re a celebrity and scrutinized).

  • msdamselfly

I think she looks cute and comfortable

  • fiestyfashionfem

    That is NOBODY’s dress!  Ugh.

  • mike__tv

But she’s still soo cute, and soo hot, and now I weep for Community…. woe is me

  • CatherineRhodes

Maybe I’m crazy here, but I think she looks cute.

  • Vickiefantastico

…or fire the stylist you’ve already got!

  • Girl, that is not anybodies dress.

  • This outfit is okay for going out to lunch or going around town; it’s not a good event look though.

  • butter nut

her lame hair style is bugging me.  she could (and should) be doing so much better.  girl’s on 2 hit shows, there’s no excuse!

  • it looks like two completely different dresses sewn together.
It doesn’t look good on her but for some reason it looks better on the model.

  • PhillipWilde

As soon as I saw this first photo, I immediately thought it would look better on Dianna Agron.  Then I scrolled down and shouted, “See? TLo agree with me!”
