Emmy Rossum Steps into Spring

Posted on February 24, 2012

Darlings, it occurred to us recently during an editorial meeting that we are perhaps getting a bit too used to color on the red carpet and that we should praise its appearance more, lest it disappear from the backs of our starlets again, leaving us only with a weepy trail of dresses the color of wadded-up pantyhose. We spent so much time in the earlier years of our red carpet blogging (Jesus Christ, that sounds weird) bemoaning the lack of color in the dresses, that we fear our 2009 selves will get wind of how blasé we’ve become in the face of one brilliantly colored starlet after another and time-travel here to slap us righteously across our faces.

So as Miss Emmy steps out in some brightly colored spring frocks, we felt she deserved the spotlight, just for… well, stepping out in some brightly colored spring frocks. Cute ones, too.

We don’t trust the colors in these pics because they look pretty washed out all over, but our first response was that this wasn’t her color, cute as the dress is. We’d need to see it in person to get a ruling on that one, we think. Either way, it’s an adorable dress. A little Betty Draper-ish (that skirt doesn’t need to be quite so full), but she’s pulling it off. She’s got the conjunctivitis eye makeup, though. HOLLYWOOD MAKEUP QUEENS: WE WILL FIND OUT YOUR NAMES AND EXPOSE YOUR SHAME TO THE WORLD IF YOU KEEP MAKING UP AMERICA’S STARLETS TO LOOK LIKE THEY’RE DYING OF CONSUMPTION.

Sorry. Felt it had to be said, is all.

Jenny Packham Spring 2012 Collection

Darlings, let’s all head to Studio 54 with Liza and Halston for Easter dinner! We love it. She looks fresh, elegant, and ready to party all at the same time. And it’s a great color on her. And she doesn’t look like she was punched in both eyes by a baby, so there’s that.

  • I’m sorry, I love the color of the second dress, but the design is practically screaming, “Titscrepancy!”

    • I want to reach through the screen and tuck that little bit of loose fabric into the “wrap”.

      Other than that, it’s lovely.

  • TDSE

Love her. Love the looks. And absolutely LOVE Shameless. Easily some of the best stuff on television.

  • Qitkat

Love the blue dress on her. I’d be very happy to see more dresses like this one. Assymetrical hem done well and perfect length for her. Sheer sleeve with lined body. Nice edging detail. Side tied belt with NO bow. Her hair and makeup are much more flattering than the severe consumptive look [thanks for the deserved shoutout on that, TLo] in the cute yellow dress.

  • She is just so pretty and fresh, love her.

  • Terence Ng

The way she smiles is always so condescending. Does she have fugly teeth?

    • janedonuts

I think she just looks super high.

    • EmilyMullasWilson

I know, right??  She has perfected the smugly self-satisfied facial expression.  You can almost hear the internal monologue: “Yes, you may breathe my air.  I know that your lives are more boring than a line at the bank.”

  • jw_ny

I think Emmy gets it right more times than not.  She looks good in each of these looks, except for her dreadful makeup in the top pic with with the yellow dress.

  • Cathy S

I love the color of the blue dress and the shape of the yellow one. Very nice.

  • TheOriginalLulu

The blue dress is glorious on her. Simply stunning. Love the updo and the lip color as well.
The yellow may not be her best color, but I agree 100% that the make-up is bringing it down. It could have been an equally stunning look, had her make-up queens done right by her.

  • I absolutely adore that blue dress and immediately wondered if I could recreate something similar for Easter Sunday!  How funny to scroll down and see TLo’s remark.  This bitter kitten is proud of herself. =)

  • EEKstl

J’ADORE the blue dress and she looks great in it – the yellow frock is adorable but she’s too pale for it.

  • Beautiful. Both of them. Wasn’t the yellow once made of like pineapple fibers or something outrageous like that?

  • I love her on Shameless, so I can’t hate. I think she looks great.

  • rougeort

Brava, Emmy. May this blue dress be the beginning of many fabulous spring outfits on the RC. Lea Michele and Jennifer Aniston, take notes from your peers.

  • Looooove both dresses. As for the eye makeup, I just have to wonder which makeup company was the first to think, “You know what would be amazing? ORANGE EYE SHADOW.” Why?

    • MilaXX

Orange eye shadow can work with the right skintone, but usually they work better or olive or darker skin.

  • “And she doesn’t look like she was punched in both eyes by a baby, so there’s that.” God, I love you two.

Tom and Lorenzo vs the Hollywood Consumption Make Up Queens.

You have no idea how much I’d pay to see it. Televised.

  • Make-up is awesome with that blue dress. She looks fabulous!

  • Also, the blue looks fab with her skin color

  • Damn it, I need that blue dress. Nice shout out to the Hollywood Make Up Queens. Someone needed to put them on notice.

  • granddelusion

Whats wrong with her feet? Or maybe the question is why are her shoes making her feet do that? So wrong.

  • understateddiva

The accessories are perfection with the blue dress, and the makeup looks great.  Gorgeous metallic shoes – why aren’t those the red carpet staple, rather than the silly putty pumps?  They’re also neutral and leg-elongating.

  • MilaXX

I like both looks. I wasn’t sold on the hair in the first one initially, but looking at a close up, I like it. I do wish she was wearing a nude eye shadow instead of that orange-y shade. Second look is a home run for me.

  • Sara__B

Her habitual facial expression bugs the heck out of me, but she does wear those charming dresses well.

  • Her dresses are cute.  There is something so perpetually smug about her facial expression that I never notice what she’s wearing, so thanks for pointing out the cute, TLo.

  • OMG I love that cyan/indigo clutch.  That may be the first thing on this site I’ve ever actually contemplated hunting down and trading for–and then it’s not credited!  Oh, the woe!

  • AthenaJ

I wish I were thin and rich enough to wear that blue dress… where’s the devil so we can make a deal??

Btw, is it just me or do colors seem to be more vibrant in the runway shots vs. the red carpet ones? (i.e. the Jenny Packham dress above, Jennifer Anniston’s dress from yesterday). Is it just the lighting?

  • girliecue

Yes, she is as lovely and refreshing as a spring breeze, but the shoes on the Jenny Packham model made me squeal with delight. Yes! Sexy strappy sandals a stumpy-legged gal can wear! Life is good!

  • DeborahLipp

I am so in love with that blue dress I want to have its little blue babies.

  • Two fabulous looks for her but I especially like that turquoise. Great cut to that dress that really shows, as you said, the 70’s inspiration without being too literal. Love.

  • sjkg

I think Emmy looks sweet and fresh in these images but in other online pictures of her in the blue dress, you can see straight through to her heart-shaped pasties….  I can’t get on board with that, even if here she looks charming….

  • Anathema_Device

She looks good in these shots. Wish she hadn’t worn such orangey lipstick with the blue dress. Agree that the yellow isn’t the best color on her and that eye makeup is awful! She still manages to look cute, though, so credit where it is due. Also, I wish the yellow dress just had straps made of the flowers and didn’t have the illusion netting going on. Would look a little younger and fresher to me.

    • kimmeister

Yes, the orange in her lipstick in the 2nd look was bugging me too!  LOVE that clutch though.

  • I would love the blue dress if you couldn’t see that she was wearing heart-shaped pasties.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, she has fabulous boobs but…..girl, you need a lining.

Also, she is my favorite part of Shameless. Hence how I know she has faboobs.

  • turtleemily

The first shots in both outfits – she’s posed looking like she has to pee.

  • PastryGoddess

Dear Hollywood Makeup Queens.  Emmy has dark heavy lidded eyes, please stop making her look like she is a cute, but Narcoleptic breath of fresh air.

Every time I see her I’m looking for the string holding her upright so she doesn’t topple over on the red carpet

  • ivypoison

Some other website pointed out she was wearing some heart-shaped pasties that were super visible (underneath the blue dress)…just wanted to point that out for some reason LOL.

  • butter nut

i love the blue one on her!

  • cleep1000

The pink lipstick clashes with the yellow dress. Otherwise, very cute.

  • Lisa

LOVE the blue one, don’t like the yellow one – too bridesmaidy.

  • minnye

The Jenny Peckham dress is be-you-ti-ful.   Drool-worthy.

  • ccm800

    She looks  so French

  • SewingSiren

Some kind mentoring financial backer should purchase that yellow dress for Jerell Scott. He should pick it a part and sew it back together no less than 100 times , including pressing each piece flat and taking note of the finely curving edge of the neckline each time he does it. Thus he should learn the proper and correct way to construct and pattern make  a sweetheart neckline on a sheer yoke.

A bad makeup job is what happens when you are an asshole and piss off your makeup artist.

  • janetjb

She looks lovely in both dresses but the blue is a better color for her.
