Downton Abbey Ladies at London Fashion Week

Posted on February 21, 2012

Darlings, Lady Edith and Lady Mary took the train down to London to get fitted for their new dresses for the coming season.

Laura Carmichael and Michelle Dockery attends Mulberry show and after-party during London Fashion Week.

They met some of those lovely girls who work in the picture shows.

And politely pretended not to be revolted by their vulgar profession.

Lady Edith showed her legs in public and sits in jail now, awaiting trial. Her father is drinking too much and groping the hallboys.

Mary, free from her tiresome sister’s constant efforts to cock-block her, dashes off to meet (hopefully) Turkish men with good hearts.

Yes, we could have talked about their clothes but we just MISS THEM SO.

Well I guess London FW is all about stockings, pretty coats and luscious hair right now. The Middleton Effect.

      • lamireille

My spider veins and I thank the stars and Cathy Cambridge for the return of stockings! I put my little hands together every night with a prayer that the trend will drift over the Atlantic.

Honestly, if I had a choice between her luscious hair and being able to wear stockings again without feeling 90 years old, I’d choose the stockings. My legs are JUST that ugly.

        • Sweetbetty

I dress up very seldom these days but I still put stockings (panty hose) on when I do.  It just doesn’t feel right without them.  I don’t have spider veins but my legs bear the ravages of years of scratches from yardwork and bug bites and other marks of a working woman and hose helps even out the skin tone.  Plus, I don’t want my feet sweating in my good shoes.

    LOVE that green coat

Going through severe Dowton Abbey withdrawal.

Damn, Michelle Dockery makes pale look fab.  Skin to die for.

    • AuntieAnonny

Did you know that she’s not actually allowed to get a tan? She said she avoids direct sunlight at all costs while filming.

    • MilaXX

I like it when women are able to embrace their paleness.

      • http://www.lindamerrill.com Linda Merrill

        Yay for pale!

  • http://www.thechipsterdiaries.blogspot.com/ Jess

Michelle looks gorgeous! I love that coat. Laura looks like such an English hipster, which is weird.

Any word on when the next series airs? I’m already experiencing the D.A. Dt’s!
(I watched the cast Q & A video and was so delighted to see Lorenzo asking a costume question!! Were you nervous? Everyone who was given the chance to ask a question appeared to be nervous!) Loved Hugh’s response to the “Occupy” question: “It’s just a t.v. show”!!!

Can you please post the link to the Q & A video?  I’d love to see it!

    • mrspeel2

BayTampaBay posted yesterday that we’ll (USA) get it in January 2013 but I just read @ Zap2it that they started filming Season 3 last week and it will premiere in England this September.

I thought everyone was charming and the questions were smart. But have to disagree about Bonneville’s answer to that one. It’s hard to imagine that none of the actors (with the exception of Dan Stevens) has any thoughts about class and income equality now vs then. If that’s true, it’s disappointing – it could have been a lively and relevant discussion. I didn’t totally agree that the divide between Detroit/Fifth Ave is greater than an Lady/scullery maid, but I wanted to hear more. I sensed the whole topic made everyone uncomfortable, which is kind of absurd.

  • RzYoung

I love everything about this post!

  • ChristySchiff

I love how Michelle Dockery was there in a fashionable coat.  See, everyone listens to you two!

  • mshesterp

Agree with others–that green coat is TO DIE for…so a gorgeous color and such a lovely drape.  Someone make a knock-off that I can afford!  And I love what she’s got going on in the dress/shoes department too!  With her hair down, Lady Mary just looks so lovely.  Lady Edith is super cute from the neck up, …and we won’t speak about the rest of it.  Oh, Lady EDITH.

  • mommyca

    I love the Crowley girls!!!!!

But what about the Crawley girls?

      • mommyca

oops! sorry for the typo! :-)

Ahhh Mary and I are kindred spirits.  White legs and all.

    le sigh. miss them too.

Just miss them so? You guys make me laugh — it’s not as if Season 2 ended less than 48 hours ago!

(Maybe you could print out some of Vulture’s DA paper dolls and write your own YouTube fanfics)

  • serenitynow02

Did Lady Mary go with two different purses to the event? And did she bring Anna along to carry the spare one for her?

  • CassandraMortmain

Edith (who is this Laura person?) looks fantastic.  Love her leather jacket and I even like the funky boots – they give the outfit an edginess.  Her hair looks great and those are quite a pair of legs she’s got.  I’d be showing them off too.

Mary (Michelle) may be the whitest person on the planet.  She positively glows.   Love her shoes and coat, the dress not so much.  She has gorgeous hair.  Almost in Cathy Cambridge’s league.

It was so interesting to hear how their real accents are quite regional, not posh at all. Lady Mary/Michelle Dockery has THE most beautiful voice!

    • Corsetmaker

The actress who plays Sybil is the only one who has a posh accent to start with.

  • sweetlilvoice

    Looking good Lady Edith!

  • Lilithcat

They met some of those lovely girls who work in the picture shows.

And politely pretended not to be revolted by their vulgar profession.

As the Countess of Severn and Thames described them to the Dowager Duchess of Denver, ” . . . the riffraff we are getting in now from the films and the nightclubs . . . ”

    • carolynmo

Hey! Love the Dorothy Sayers reference!

    • Mariana Newman

      Me too!

  • Anathema_Device

Hilarious. This is better than discussing the clothing. Although Carmichael’s 1990s boots are a sad punctuation to that outfit.

  • Pants_are_a_must

I would like to have Miss Mary’s shoes, thank you very much. If Turkish men literally die on you in bed, you’d better have FAB shoes at least.

  • j_anson

Man, this particular entry was not the one to be drinking water during.

  • BPlease

I can’t get over how beautiful Laura Carmichael is in real life, and how effectively the hair and makeup styling on Downton makes her less attractive.  It’s a shocking difference to me.

  • AudreysMom

when they do a tv movie of the latest Royal Wedding (they haven’t yet, have they?) Michelle Dockery is perfect to play Cathy Cambridge. Who else is that thin (beside Keira Knightley?), so radiant and suggests Kate M? Flog me if this idea has already been tossed out – but somehow looking at her in more contemporary clothing, just made it so obvious.

Thanks for mentioning the Downton cast Q&A session. We loved it!

  • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

Tom Hiddleston was sitting next to these three all evening! Poor Lady Edith had to crawl  into her friend’s lap, because the hammer in his pants needs a seat all to itself. The guy has been making nice with Tilda Swinton and making out with miss Piggy and he still didn’t make the blog! Foiled again!

    • http://twitter.com/ursny UrsNY

      Thanks for these! Love him!

But, I do loathe the sit & spread, even on him. A guy sitting next to me like that on the subway makes me violent, like the old Hothead Paisan comic. Guys, please keep the angle under 15º. If your balls are so easily suffocated, switch to old man boxers and see a physician.

      • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

Haha, word. I think he might be ‘physically’ incapable of keeping his legs closed. Medical intervention might be needed.

  • dress_up_doll

It’s nice to see the ladies out and about and in contemporary dress. Lovelovelove Michelle’s entire look. And Laura Carmichael looks adorable. I don’t even mind the that the Princess of Twee (MW) joined them.

  • Zippypie

I love Edith!  She’s adorable and she was so funny and kind on her PBS messaging session a couple of weeks back.  I want to hang with Edith!

  • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

God, Michelle Dockery just has the most beautiful skin. And Laura Carmichael is really adorable when she’s not on Downton Abbey. They sure do an effective job of frumping her up (down?) for the show.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1046681022 Paula Berman

Are we sure Michelle Dockery isn’t Ally Sheedy’s clone?

  • Gayer_Than_Thou

What exactly is Michelle Dockery standing in front of?  Trump’s broom closet?

  • Mariah Warnock-Graham

Mich. Williams should totally do a cameo to bring Downton into the 20′s Jazz Age thing.

  • PrunellaV

“Edith” is such a cutie, and a good sport for letting them make her so dowdy on the show.

    • LANDRU3000

Did you see her as a seventies secretary in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy?   She seems to have a face that fits into any time period.

  • http://twitter.com/carelessriver Cassie (C.M.W.)

[wailing, gnashing of teeth] Come back, Lady Mary! You can even bring Lady Edith with you!

  • Pennymac

I’m having Downton withdrawals so terrible that I Googled a bunch of YouTube interviews of the cast today. They seem to get along when they’re not working and have true friendships. Is there a date for season three to begin? Do we have to wait for an entire year?

  • bluefish

Some beautiful legs on the lovely and talented Laura!

  • Susan Crawford

Well, doesn’t little Edith tidy up nicely? Those legs will take her far as the DA crew enters the Roaring Twenties and hemlines creep up. She has a bit of a gleam in her eye and a lot of steam to let loose, and the black bottom is just the beginning for this little duckling who is going to be a swan.

As for Lady Mary, that perfect poise and posture in the face of those pesky paparazzi barely hides her disdain. No doubt the eeeville Sir Richard has sent them to taunt her, but I suspect she plans to toss Elven Michelle down a flight of stairs to distract them, and then dash off into the London night to meet Michael and be twirled around and around and around . . .  God, I miss the show so much already. (Sobbing bitterly into my lace-trimmed hankie.)

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

They both look so adorable. I love Michelle D.’s coat.
