DKNY Fall 2012 Menswear Collection

Posted on February 09, 2012

Darlings, we went to the DKNY Menswear presentation last night and ….

… there are worse ways to kick of your Fashion Week. Especially since live music and cocktails were involved.

DKNY never seeks to redefine menswear every season; rather, they tweak it a little each time, which makes the clothes feel classic, but freshened up.  This time, the suits were fitted (We both walked out saying, “We have GOT to buy a DKNY suit this year.”), the ties were skinny, and the outerwear ranged from bombers to trenches in a modern mid-length. As always, there’s a very NYC feel here. These looks are all chic takes on the kinds of outfits you’d see walking down a New York street any day of the week, except styled to perfection and everyone wearing them has killer cheekbones.

Is it just me, or are these models looking particularly Children of the Corn-y?

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

The venue was lit like a nightclub, i.e., very dark. We had a feeling the pictures being taken were going to look like this.

They look like little fascists to me which I found quite distracting and off putting.  So after I read your reply I looked at the clothes and there are some great things in there.
But why do models always have to be so young?  They don’t look old enough to drink!

    • Anonymous

That first/lead picture just screamed Rhythm Nation to me.

      • Anonymous

Yes, and I’m pretty sure Collective Soul is hanging out in the background (or their kids are). Very ’90s, a lot of this.

    • Anonymous

Well done, but I find myself yearning for some color.

Hate the baseball caps, love every thing else, even though I suspect they are going to take me to their leader and run uncomfortable tests on me.

      • Anonymous

Yes,except the guy in the black leather button down and brown pants–he must have infiltrated the alien horde.  He’d better watch out. his slight neck tilt and half smile are going to blow his cover.

      • Anonymous

I had exactly the same feeling about several of those photos!  Just a little whiff of the fascisti about them.

The last two photos are great, though.

        • Anonymous

The cheekbones on the model in the last pic are insane and I dug his whole look.  Sadly, the second to last picture I didn’t love – all I could think was that the model looked like Lamar from Revenge of the Nerds, but wearing pants I don’t love.

          • Anonymous

Is it me, or does the 2nd to last model look ever-so-slightly cross-eyed?

            • Anonymous

              He TOTALLY does

          • Anonymous

Last guy looks like the love child of Taboo from the B.E.P. and Johnny Depp.

            • Anonymous

              Wow, that’s soooo true…excellent call.

Those poor boys need to eat.

      • Terence Ng

They’ll be fed after they’ve worked. One bowl of gruel each.

        • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Gruel’s too starchy. Fat-free protein shakes!

          • Anonymous

            Both of you are hilarious!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1314915676 Harvard Bridges

Whoa, cool. I really like these. I’d wear the first suit and probably the plaid shirt in the back of the last photo.

    • http://profiles.google.com/dchockeyguy Trevor Burroughs

I didn’t see any bombers in the pics, but I’ll trust that they were there. I might need a new leather jacket soon.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_62USDUVT7YWSMOPJDE5SWN5NBI Karen

3rd picture, center model.  Is it me, or is the inseam of his pants gathered?  It looks dreadful.

      • Anonymous

And you can see it in the first pic…he’s the 3rd guy from the left.  Shocked that was not caught/fixed.

        • Anonymous

Or maybe it’s a design element.  I’m hard pressed to believe otherwise.

    • Jasmine Moten

Major WOOF to the guy in the last pic.

    • Anonymous

Judging from the models, Donna’s target market is 14 year olds with trust funds?

    • Terence Ng

Wow, who chose the polished black floor as the venue? Can’t see anything below the waist.

    • Anonymous

      Frightening and fascist.

    • Sara__B

What’s wrong with these DKNY people? I LIKE this stuff! It looks like ordinary guys can wear it and look really good — if they ditch the baseball caps — guys like my husband and son and their friends.

    • Anonymous

In addition to being tight (which I’m so-so on, but that’s just personal preference), don’t the blazers seem a bit short?  I remember when short blazers were in for women, and they almost always make you look bottom-heavy if you have a butt/belly/hips.  Tough to wear for mere mortals.  But that’s kind of the point with this collection, I guess.

      • http://twitter.com/carelessriver Cassie (C.M.W.)

Short blazers actually look proportional on some short women! [raises hand] I look so frumpy in anything with more than two buttons, unless I’m shooting for the Mary Crawley look.

        • Anonymous

Ah, I didn’t mean the height of the woman, just that short blazers can create the illusion of narrowness on the top half and bulk right around the hips.  Guessing you have nice shoulders, and/or a long/slim waist, and/or narrow hips, and/or an ample (enough) chest.  Short blazers work well for the hourglass shape and for thinner gals, just usually not for those with a more typically pear shape (I prefer to call it the Modigliani shape, if you want to be more positive about it).  Anyway, you’re lucky–I think short blazers are cute as all git out!

      Needs color!

    • Anonymous

I like this collection very much.  For the most part, guys of almost any age could find flattering pieces.

Also..I kind of dig the baseball caps for the show, well…guys in baseball caps, in general, too.  ;)

    • Christy Cricow

I just feel relieved they aren’t wearing Hannibal Lecter masks….or worse. Nice to see a relatively sane take on masculinity.

    • http://twitter.com/stopENtalk Brittany Johnstone

LOVE the casual pieces. One of each for the Mr. please!

    • Anonymous

i actually like the collection.  boys i hope you do a run down on your like & dislikes of the actuall events as in venue, cocktails, etc.

    • Kyle Crawford

I liked this the first go round as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAwaNWGLM0c

      • Kyle Crawford

we are part of the rhythm nation!

    • Anonymous

Various models look too much like very famished lesbians

    • Judy_J

Great suits, and nary a puddle of fabric around the ankle!  Hollywood stylists, pay attention!

    • Anonymous

Sadly I don’t think anything but the sunglasses would fit me.

    • Anonymous

cool concept! Though I don’t get the baseball caps.

    • mrspeel2

I just don’t get the whole ball cap with sports jacket look and think pairing them with suits is even weirder. I think it makes the men look like pinheads. REAL pinheads; not the O’Reilly type!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Patrick-Cleary/1201575213 Patrick Cleary

I want every single jacket in every color. Grey, black, off-black, and off-grey.

    • Anonymous

That last guy looks exactly like every guy I either crushed on or dated in high school. Except for the ones who had blond or (in one case) beautifully auburn hair.  ahh, memory lane.

Clothes are nice, too. [I fear those suit jackets may not flatter those with a bit of middle-aged spread - though I don't know enough about clever tailoring for men to say for sure.]

    • Anonymous

Shh don’t tell anyone, DKNY just made clothes that *real* people can wear.  Seriously, these clothes are amazing and if I was a man I’d want all of these pieces

    • oohsparkley!

Some of those cheekbones could cut a bitch!  They look kind of depressed in their refugee clothes.  Give them a sandwich and some color.  Just kidding.  Except for the leather and the suits and sportcoat jackets, the clothes look like they could have come from anywhere. (expl. Wal Mart, Sears or the thrift store)

Love. When I am Queen, men will have a short list of options for the mandatory dress code, and this will be one of them.

    • Anonymous

Love, love, love every single piece. That’s the way I like my men — classic with a tweak.

    • MilaXX

      mmmmm, pretty, pretty boys!

    • Anonymous

4th pic from the bottom looks like Cobie Smulders O.o

    • Anonymous

      I like it.  Very urban.

    • http://twitter.com/carelessriver Cassie (C.M.W.)

I wouldn’t say “styled to perfection”, exactly. The baseball caps are an automatic no for me, and so is nineties-grunge-length hair.

    • Lexie

      YUM.

    • butter nut

      LOVE!  every piece looks perfect.

    • Anonymous

Oh Lord…serve me up a big plate of that last model!  He’s rocking circa-1990-Ian-Astbury and MAMA LIKES.

    • http://twitter.com/mirrormirrorxx Paola Thomas

Are those the models or the models’ CHILDREN?  God, I feel old…

    • Anonymous

Clearly I’m missing something because these look generic and ill-fitting. Are the trousers meant to crease like that? And everything looks so tired. Unimpressed.

    • Anonymous

These models look like they are all in trouble at school and are all standing outside the principal’s office.

    • Anonymous

that last model wins the cheekbone competition.

    • Anonymous

Meh.  It all looks like stuff I wear to work every day.

I pretty much have versions of everything in the third photo including the baseball caps. Only I don’t look half as hot as they do.  My partner would beg to differ but he’s a sweetheart that way.

    • Anonymous

I love the collection, love the guys and I am def going out and buying that first suit.

    • Anonymous

boys-wear more like it. Do the kids cost less as models? Any way this shit looks about the same season after season.
