DKNY Fall 2012 Collection

Posted on February 14, 2012

The notes didn’t say so, but this collection came across to us a direct appeal to the NYC gal; tough, ballsy, occasionally in your face, but feminine to the core. The kind of gal who can rock a leather jacket and 5-inch heels while navigating subway grates. Having the models walk in from the street against the backdrop of a parked NYC cab certainly helped that impression. Then we realized, aren’t all DKNY collections essentially about that same woman? From the powerful-looking black leathers to the business-like grays to the pretty florals and the feral leopard prints, this DKNY collection, like all DKNY collections, showcases the strong, sophisticated, sexy urban woman. Loved the shapes here, especially the fitted tops with skirts that flare out at the bottom, and the big leather Wonder Woman-style belts.

Strength + Femininity = DKNY.

And these are styles that work on a variety of body shapes and sizes. Can’t wait to see them in stores!

That floral pantsuit is not something I can abide by.  Seriously, did I lambaste Austin too much for his Driving Miss Daisy ensemble on PR?  These floral prints are freaking everywhere…but not with high waisted pleated khakis, so that’s a difference.

I do j’adore the light grey items with the piping and the longer dresses are beautifully simple and elegant.

Yeah.  That floral pantsuit reminds of the one Florence Welch (not sure on the last name) wore a couple of months ago.  Didn’t like that one either!

With the exception of the fur (not just morally, but visually) and some of the shapes (like the low-sitting trumpet/flare skirts), I am in love with this collection. Favorite looks are the top row middle, the oversize blue sweater, and sheer black top and trousers at the end. <3

Love it! Awesome LBDs and love the belts except not over the puffy jacket ;)

I think these are great clothes but as fashion they’re a little boring.

      Yes. Too safe I think.

Agreed.  I’ve always thought that about Donna Karan.

It was when they did their Spring Show on 9/11/11. Very bright pretty colors. Kinda the opposite here.

Ankle straps are going to be hot!!

  • Judy_J

Functional, wearable, good-looking clothes.  DKNY is nothing if not consistent.

Sign me up for any of the black leather skirts. I bought one 11 years ago for my 4-month old daughter, and I’ve been wanting one for myself ever since. :)

Lord, beer me strength, if I see one more belt-excuse-for-a-corset on the runway.

    Otherwise, I love this collection.

    • MilaXX

yeah not a fan of the belt/corset, but love the collection

Red, ankle strap platforms with black tights?!  Hot!

Ok, I’m going to be needing one of each of everything up until the blue-floral suit.
After that, I just need the magenta dress. Are you writing this down?

    Purple coat, please be mine!

If you’re not into leather this is a pretty boring collection. Not much color – kind of depressing actually.

  • http://viridianpostcard.blogspot.com/ viridian61

I see I’d better go out and buy some black tights.

I love the jackets, but the big belts remind me too much of a medical device.

  • Sarah Thomas

These are not clothes for stylish people. These are clothes for rich people with no style. These are the equivalent of buying the window vignette at West Elm for your living room.

  • Jessica Rowe

Yah, I loved this collection.  Love the colours and the sleekness.  I hate muppet coats though.

bottom row, left look- I NEED IT /NOW/. flawless and actually something i would wear. those shoes……. i might be drooling.

  • MilaXX

Love it! I’ll take one of each. I especially like the dresses and skirts.

  • kbuchholznp

I quite liked this show as well, and thought that the pieces were quite wearable. It wasn’t until my friend, who was sitting next to me while I watched online, piped up and said “that’s very nineties” (the sheer panels, the off the shoulder, long slim hemlines) that I actually notices that yes, it is very nineties. But that’s a good thing

Fabulosity! Love, love, love the last look in the right hand column. I want to go there!

I’m not young, urban OR chic…but I LOVE this collection.  there isn’t an off note anywhere.  This collection is GORGEOUS!

I’m no New Yorker, but I adore my DKNY leather jacket… and this collection. Love the shape of those shorter skirts, particularly the grey one with black detailing (6c), the black and white print (2b), and the dress with the leather panels on the side (2a)–and yes, I realize they’re all the same skirt. Also, that second jacket… drool.

  • Anonymous

Hmmm. . . . New Yorker though I may be, I’m not feeling this one.

    • Anonymous

New Yorker born and bred here too. First thought I had was that Ive seen versions of outfits like these worn by me and my friends on countless occasions over the last 15-20 yrs- maybe not as expensive but certainly in the same wheelhouse of style. Its timeless and classic with enough edge to be distinct. I can see why some view it as a snooze fest. But yet there are so many go to pieces for typical NYC nights out or days at work into nights out where something cool is required that also wont get you fired.

So Im on the loving it side of the fence.

That off-the-shoulder black dress is divine.  Everything else I’ve seen before, though I don’t doubt that the execution is fantastic.  They would probably make incredible basics.

Love all the skirts, the jackets aren’t the right shape for me but they are very cute. I will shell out for one of the belts. Quite the snappy collection overall!

love DKNY. Their dresses are always a hit for me. Love the sheer paneling on the arms and necklines.

  • Anonymous

When looking at this, those furry arms on the coat on the model in the third to last row made me think of that old Far Side Calendar with the cartoon of a man with bear arms and the caption, The right to bear arms.” Made me LOL!!!

  • Anonymous

Very northern hemisphere urban – the first few rows look like costuming for a spy movie set in NY, London, Paris & Berlin.

The floral pantsuit with matching high-necked shirt and cropped trousers must be very high fashion because only a person absolutely convinced of their sophistication and in possession of a stylish hair cut and minimal hips could wear it without looking as if they’d come out of a clown car. And god bless those girls, they give the rest of us something to people watch.

That mid-thigh plum coat is very scrumptious.

  • Susan Crawford

Very tough-urban-cool. I love the wide leather belts, the pops of color, especially that plum walking coat ensemble, and the leather jackets are just gorgeous. One thing you must say about DK – she knows her NY!

  • Amy Ellinger

I’m not “her woman” but these are pretty clothes, if a bit meh.  There are a few pieces that would work into a variety of wardrobes and styles, but I’m having a hard time imagining wearing these outfits anywhere else but NYC.  It may be the leather sleeves on the coats, or the lack of color.

    The purple coat is lovely.

LOVE. There is not a single thing here that I would actually wear, but it is all beautiful. Audreybot can wear some of the black leather for the next Girl with a… press tour.

Peacoats with leather sleeves really seem to be a thing this season, no?

  • oohsparkley!

If only I were young, thin and rich.

Purple coat!  Purple coat!  Mine! Mine! Mine!

  • Anonymous

    Oh, yummmm.

Gorgeous, except I wish the skirts were just a skoosh longer to make them office-wearable.

    I want those red shoes.

  • Anonymous

Started strong, sort of fell apart in the middle and ended on a high note.  I love the red shoes.

DKNY Aways comes through with wearable, fierce, feminine yet powerful clothing.  LOVE.

Circa 1967, my mother had a to-the-knee version of the black gown with the sheer top/sleeves near the bottom of the page.  It wasn’t a designer label, but it was a great dress back then, too.

  • Anonymous

As a California Woman, I guess I am not supposed to be worthy of these looks.  I love the balck tights and red shoes, and many of the looks minus the fur and too warm coats.

  • Anonymous

I pretty much love all of this.  Those skirts are unusual and the cut is very flattering…I bet they’re going to be very popular.

  • Anonymous

As a huge DKNY fan, I love and covet this collection. Donna never disappoints. I want it all!

  • http://twitter.com/carelessriver Cassie (C.M.W.)

The first half of that collection screams “Lost Girl”. As in the fabulous, sexy Canadian TV show. I approve.

  • Anonymous

same shit – different season. Shes a lazy ass designer.

  • Anonymous

Love it! DKNY has always been one of my faves…I needs a pair of those red pumps and at least one leather jacket and or skirt…I am so happy that leather is having a big moment, must be the cowgirl in me…

I guess enormous belts will be back in style again soon..
