Daniel Radcliffe for Esquire UK Magazine

Posted on February 06, 2012

Looks like Danny Boy’s little Hammer Horror movie did quite well over the weekend, which means you can expect a lot of “Harry Who?”-style profiles down the line. Still, good for him. Every child star had a hard time transitioning to adult roles and most of them didn’t make it at all. But Daniel may have had the absolute hardest row to hoe because no child star ever started out their career by becoming an icon to an entire generation, and in over a decade’s worth of films. Forget child stars, that’s tough for any actor to get past.

As for these pictures, sometimes we think he needs to dial down the intensity just a bit, but for the most part, we like them. He’s styled well (if a little safely) and he knows how to work a camera.

Daniel Radcliffe featured in the March 2012 issue of Esquire UK magazine photographed by Yu Tsai and styled by Catherine Hayward.

I love that shot of him next to the cab <3

he’s too cute… just want to put him in my pocket…would probably fit too…

    • Meg Strader

He looks like a beautiful young russian….”Barishnikov light”.

      • http://www.facebook.com/tiyuju Yuju Ti

YES!!! Thank you! When I looked at these pics I was thinking “He reminds me of someone…..who’s that someone?”
        Love your “Barishnikov light” !

      • http://twitter.com/RamenRanch Lebogang Mogashoa

Yup!!! I had a crush on both Radcliffe and Baryshnikov (SATC era but still) and I found them very similar but couldn’t explain it. I’m glad I wasn’t insane.

      • Cathy S

That’s right on target! I like the last picture and the one by the cab the best.

    • http://www.twitter.com/allforusophia AllForUSophia

Love the one with the coffee and the 2nd one with the blue polo shirt. He’s got an intense gaze. Very cool!

The second pic made me say out loud, “What did I do? I’m sorry!” He is turning into a cute man I must say.

I like the coffee shot too. Much better prop than a cigarette. :)

      WANT. God, he’s gorgeous.

      • Anonymous

Never thought I’d see full caps WANT or the filled with yearning “God, he’s gorgeous” directed at him… but am immensely tickled by how hard your loins are burning for Harry Potter!

      • Anonymous

        I love him.
And speaking as someone who saw him fully in the buff onstage… HELLO, HARRY!
And hey, he’s taller than me. That’s all I ask.

        • Anonymous

SO JEALOUS. Equus is one of my favorite plays and I’m SO bummed that I didn’t get a chance to get to NYC to see it. And yeah, he’s taller than me too. Of course, at 5’2″, I have a hard time finding a guy who’s shorter than me, so…

      • Sobaika Mirza

Same. Never thought I’d say that about him! But something about this shoot really works for him.

        • Anonymous

Yeh, I’ve never, ever thought he was handsome before now.  But now — wow!

          • Anonymous

I’m going to give good credit to the photographer.  I think these pictures make him better looking than I’ve ever seen him before.  Props!!!

    • Anonymous

I always say about Daniel Radcliffe, “Oh, he’s so cute!”  Or something along those lines.

What I like most about this editorial is that it makes it clear that “cute” is no longer appropriate.  Just as the cover promised, he has, indeed, manned up.  I like his hair like that too.

      • Anonymous

Agreed. This is the first time I’ve ever seen him look like an adult. I think it doesn’t help that his smile is very boyish, and he is usually smiling in the r.c./premiere pix (not that smiling’s a bad thing!) The clothes are also more “man” clothes/tailoring/something than I usually see on him, too.

        • Anonymous

Good point about his boyish smile.  You’re absolutely right.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Patrick-Cleary/1201575213 Patrick Cleary

He’s also a very small man, and smaller men sometimes feel like they have to make up for it by being WAY TOO INTENSE. At least, a couple of my ex-boyfriends seemed to follow that theory.

      • Anonymous

Funny, all my WAY TOO INTENSE ex-boyfriends were over six feet. The chill ones were the short ones.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Patrick-Cleary/1201575213 Patrick Cleary

Hee. Maybe it’s the ex- part that makes the ex-boyfriends WAY TOO INTENSE?!

      • Anonymous

Junior high/middle school often gives smaller guys extreme motivation for cultivating an intense demeanor, that is, if they can’t manage border-line psycho threatening.

      • Anonymous

I’m glad he isn’t going the route of becoming obsessed with bodybuilding like a lot of smaller men — and former child actors. (Seen Jonathan Lipnicki lately?)

        • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

          Yes, creepy!!!

    • Anonymous

Our little wizard is looking pretty good here. I’m rooting for him to be one of the rare few who make the transition from child actor to adult actor.

      • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

I’m rooting for him to make that transition too. Love the photos in an “Our little Daniel–all grown up” sort of way.

    • Anonymous

Ew. I will never get over the fact that he looks EXACTLY like my little brother (except lil’ bro is taller and blonde). Cannot see this kid objectively. That tie on the cover really brings out his eyes.

      • Anonymous

I have the same problem with Shia Labeouf – he’s grown up to be a pretty nice-looking man, but he reminds me so much of my nephew that I just can’t think of him in “that” way, it’s just too weird!

    • girl crow

That last pic is really odd. It looks like he is yogic-flying and has no feet.

      • Anonymous

Now that you mention it . . . BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

    • Anonymous

so refreshing to finally see his lovely blue eyes sans his Harry spectacles. :)

      • Anonymous

I actually think the Harry Potter character having glasses is going to help him with the transition to adult roles, now that you mention it. It makes it harder to associate the actor with that character without the glasses.

        • Anonymous

I never thought of that as a specific help to him, but I think you are exactly right. But it’s not so drastic a change that he loses his familiarity (Jennifer Grey, post-nosejob being a famous example).

    • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

Knows how to work the square jaw. And the hair is reminding me of his past co-star Robert Pattinson’s. I don’t know if he can turn off the intensity– maybe it’s just a function of eyebrow thickness? Plus jaw tension? All in all, looking great. Not over or under styled IMHO.

      • Anonymous

I just came here to say I thought he looks a little Pattinson-esque.

        • Anonymous

          except, you know, clean.

love the last shot – totally James Dean.

      • Anonymous

Holy crap, you are so right. I wouldn’t have thought of it, but he actually does resemble James Dean in that shot. Crazy.

      • Anonymous

That last shot made me think of What’s-his-name from 90210.

    • Anonymous

      :O

I can’t unsee the similarity of him and David Tennant! Not saying they could be twins, but definitely brothers or cousins.

      • Anonymous

        You stole the words….  ;-)
Especially in the next to last shot.

    • Anonymous

Now I can call him hot

    • MilaXX

Not bad. I have to say my favorite is the one where he’s leaning on the taxi. The only thing that bugs me is most of these feel like the pictures SNL takes of it’s guest stars and shows between commercial breaks.

      • http://www.facebook.com/mary.nease Mary Nease

Those they did of him were pretty awesome too.

All hail the SNL still photographer!

    • Anonymous

It’s the first time I’ve ever looked at photos of Daniel Radcliffe and wondered if I would or not (if you catch my drift). Still wouldn’t but it’s the closest he’s ever got to looking sexy I reckon. And I feel dirty for talking about Harry Potter like that.

      • Anonymous

You took the cougar-y words right out of my mouth.

        Except… I think that I would. :)

    • Anonymous

He looks really, really good in here. Whoever’s in charge of his image is doing a fabulous job.

    • Anonymous

Shirley temple would argue with your icon point. Judy Garland too. IS that a FLY on his shirt (cover shot)? He’s looking pretty smart in these – You go little guy!

      • http://twitter.com/londonpenguin Teresa MacDonald

I was wondering if it’s an ink blot.

      • http://www.facebook.com/mary.nease Mary Nease

To my generation who grew up reading Harry Potter as kids and into our adolescence and don’t remember our lives without Harry Potter, he has become something of an icon, or in the least, the physical representation of an icon.

      • Anonymous

Judy didn’t start her acting life as an iconic figure, although she ended it that way. And Shirley Temple’s last movie role, according to IMDb anyway, was in 1949, when she was 21. So she may have started out as an icon, but the transition to adult roles was apparently trickier for her. (The ones he should really want to emulate are Jodie Foster and the creme de la creme: Elizabeth Taylor.)

That said, we obviously can’t say yet one way or another what DanRad’s career will be like post-Potter. I hope it goes a little more Harrison Ford and a little less Mark Hamill. Or, he could follow his H2$ predecessor Matthew Broderick and always be one role (save Ferris!) to a given generation but still work consistently and successfully in theatre and smaller-budget films. Seems from his interviews that he’d be fine with that.

    • allisankelly

He’s a cutie and the new movie wasn’t bad. The taxi shot is good and also the coffee cup shows a little levity…

    • http://profiles.google.com/withano Loren S

He’s succeeding where Elijah Wood failed!  Good for him!

      • http://twitter.com/arodenha Alli

Hey, Elijah Wood seems to be doing pretty well for himself. I mean, there was that one indie trilogy he was in, Lord of the something. Tiny film, not sure if it was even released widely.

    • Jenny Zhang

Is it just me, or does he look a lot like Andrew Garfield in some of these?

    • marilyn

      A great looking guy!!

    • Lauren Maier

Is it me, or does he look a bit like David Tennant’s young (and amazingly available) younger brother?  Especially in the shot where he’s wearing the striped shirt and white pants.
Although I totally admit to eternal 10th Doctor withdrawal.

      • Elaine Lang

OMG, you just made Nerds everywhere spontaneously orgasm at the thought.   GGGGGGhhhhhhhhhhhhhrrrrrr.

Also, i have to give old DanRad credit for the relatively poised transition he has made into adulthood.   Famous at 10, making impassioned and thoughtful PSA’s for the Trevor Project at 19?   I can’t think of one good reason to wish anything but success for him.  With statements like this:

“Don’t define yourself by your sexuality, don’t define as straight or gay, define yourself as people and help another person if they’re in trouble. The ultimate reason gay marriage should be legalized everywhere is because, as a kid, you look to your mum and dad and they’re married, then you look at the gay couple who’ve been together for the same amount of time, but because they can’t get married their relationship doesn’t seem the same. Yes, gay marriage is about symbolically blessing a relationship, but the larger issue is about transmitting a fundamental message about equality. Gay people should have equality in law everywhere. If you grow up as a young gay man knowing you dont’ have the same opportuniteies as everyone else, you’re going to feel victimised and massive prejudice towards you.”

I’m ready to join Dumbledore’s Army.

I have problems with his mouth. I know that’s awfully specific, but he has a tiny, thin, icy sort of mouth and a very small bottom half of face entirely. Just not my kind of boy.

    • http://www.celestiae.net Isy

I feel confused and uncomfortable about these photos.

It has to be pretty hard to dial back the intensity once you have battled the Dark Lord….

    • Anonymous

These are really good shots. I especially like that last one, in the beige sweater and pants.

He has been very smart in his non-Potter roles. Doing theater was a good move. He was also fortunate in that his Potter character grew up by 7 years during the series. He didn’t have a  career as child actor prior to that.

I’m rooting for him to have a happy and long career. I’ve loved every interview I’ve ever read with him.

      • Elaine Lang

That’s an interesting insight…The Potter child actors do have the benefit of the fact that their first defining roles were WRITTEN as a dramatic depiction of growing up…The whole point of the series was reaching adulthood in a conscious, real way…so there is less pressure on the actors to ‘be a kid forever” when JK Rowling wrote the characters as people who actually changed and evolved into adulthood.

    • http://twitter.com/arodenha Alli

Sometimes he looks a little too hobbit-y for my taste but good lord that cover shot made me gasp. Those EYES!

    • Anonymous

If only he used more than one facial expression while actually acting in films… his acting in the Potter films was always atrocious, but Woman in Black wasn’t bad. Decent ghost story.

      • Anonymous

I always felt he was hamstrung in those films by what the adults around him wanted. I think the grown-ups felt too sorry for Harry. David Heyman (producer) wanted to cast him because he had “haunted” eyes. But to me, one of the great things about Harry in the early books at least
was how funny and cheerful and adventurous he was – despite the unwanted fame and the dead parents and everything life at Hogwarts was *aweseome* and he was thrilled to be there. I wish they’d let DanRad play that up a bit more, especially since the kid is apparently bubbly as fuck in real life.

        • http://www.celestiae.net Isy

Seriously. Harry was sarcastic as hell in the books and I so missed that in the movies. We only got glimpses of that, when Harry’s sense of the absurd was so off the chart that he was wise cracking even when he knew he’d be punished for it.

Hopefully he’ll turn out to be the British Ron Howard and continue to be super successful as an adult actor. Good thing he already got his “troubled” phase out of the way with that drinking problem he used to have.

It’s not really that rare anymore for child actors to make a successful transition to adult actor.   I never liked Daniel as Harry Potter (In fact, I thought all of the kids were miscast except Draco and Neville.), and I haven’t seen him in any non-HP roles.  He seems likeable enough in interviews though so I hope he continues to do well.

He could burst into ‘hot’ any minute now.

      • Anonymous

It’s funny, he’s neither as hot as I thought he would be when he was 11, nor as homely as I thought he would be when he was going through his awkward teen phase. I think he has the potential to age quite well, though, given his bone structure. Cheekbones and (esp) jawlines like that help when everything else starts to sag.

    • Anonymous

I love this spread…he’s a handsome boy (man?) that looks good and it’s not a standard mold of the Clooney/Pitt/Evans uber-hunk layout.

    • Lisa

He looks fabulous!  I don’t mind the intensity at all – smoke ‘em if ya got ‘em, you know?  It works for him, and he should use it.  As for the styling, he looks great!  It really is nice to see a child star headed in the right direction – same can be said for Emma Watson.  Wonder if Rupert Grint will get it together soon?

I just want to put him in my pocket and take him EVERYwhere with those blueblue eyes and those sculpted cheekbones. DanRad is growing up oh so nicely, isn’t he? A little preppy; a little nerd-chic; and a whole lot of what mama likes!

Hrm. If I imagine you as roughly contemporaneous in age to him, it takes the cougar factor of this comment — on a scale of 1-10 – down to like, 8. From about a thousand.

        • Susan Crawford

          Dear amywinns,
Let us draw a discreet veil over the vast difference in age between my elderly self and Daniel. I can only say that – sadly - I no longer even fit the cougar age group. Is there a velociraptor group? If so, slot me in there! But although I am ancient, I’m not quite dead yet. Even a woman of a certain age can fantasize.
          Love, Susan (The Wizened) C.

    • Judy_J

He has an interesting face.  He’s aged well, don’t you think?

I kept thinking that as well. The angle between his jaw and chin is so chiseled. Yes, you look back at the first Harry Potter and at least I don’t see the potential.

I very much enjoyed Woman in Black, an old-fashioned Gothic ghost story that relies on atmosphere, rather than gore, for the chills. Young Mr.Radcliffe looked quite handsome in the film, period clothes suit him very well. I did not think of Harry Potter once.

He looks great in this spread. I like his intensity, it seems a genuine part of his personality and not an affectation. I hope he continues to do well for himself.

he is just so adorable. love him.

That second from last shot is the absolute best angle I’ve ever seen for his face. I think he frequently tends to tilt his chin down to increase the “intensity” of his gaze, but keeping it up dials down the “intensity” of his browbone/eyebrows and brings more emphasis to his very nice bone structure (cheekbones and chin). I never thought of him as having a manly face, but now I can see how it will develop.

Ummm in the cover picture, it looks like he has a spider on his shirt and it’s kind of freaking me out…  Otherwise, he looks good – surprisingly good.  Though I don’t think I’ll ever be able to see him as anything other than Harry.  Kind of like how I can’t see Ashton Kutcher as anything but Kelso.

He has turned into a very dishy young man.  I heard him interviewed on CBC last week and he is quite articulate and level headed, which is amazing considering all of the attention he receives.

And money. He could just seat home counting his millions or put them up his nose, but he just seems to be amazingly level headed about his life and career. His parents should raise child actors for a living. I also agree with serenitynow02 above. Woman in Black is a nice old fashioned thriller. He is great in it. He has all those scenes where is just him alone, reacting, no dialogue. And he does a great job with that. I hope he keeps on growing as an actor. Who knows?

So happy for him! He looks great here! I’d been cringing at the somewhat extended awkward phase he was in. . . for so long. . .

Most child stars don’t grow up to be that handsome. He looks good.

      Jake Gyllenhaal? Last Photo?

I think he’s absolutely adorable and not only that, he’s grown into a very handsome man. And I’m probably one of the few people on the planet who never got caught up in Harry Potter fever, so my opinion of him is completely unbiased. He just has a face that grabs you.

    • Scott Isaacs

Second to last photo: I’d never thought I’d make the comparison, but he’s serving up some major Henry Rollins intensity. Almost like they could be related.

Whoa, I can totally see that. Weird!

    • Wrenaria

      He looks great!

      He looks really great.

This is the first time I’ve ever considered Radcliffe to be handsome. For the longest time he looked like one of those sickly boys who in school would constantly get bloody noses… so, way to go Esquire.

i still think those eyebrows need a wax.

He sure has grown into a handsome young man. The camera loves his face.

He seems like a good guy and is getting to be quite handsome.  In some photos he reminds me of an architect I used to date.

      Cute!

“No child star ever started out their career by becoming an icon to an entire generation, and in over a decade’s worth of films.”  Try Shirley Temple. Now that kid had it ROUGH when she grew up as far as maintaining an acting career. Can you imagine?

I’m usually not a Daniel Radcliff fan- I think he looks really scraggly and weird a lot of the time. These pictures are great though. This might be the first time I think he’s pretty hot.

    • Anonymous

I’ve never found him sexy before, but he looks FINE in that cover pic and pretty damn hot (albeit intense) in the next one too.

He’s very cute, but the boy needs to eat a damn sandwich. I feel like I can see his ribs through a suit, and that’s a problem.  It also seems like he’s styled a bit too old.  He’s only 22, but he’s dressed like George Clooney.

I love the shot of him sipping the coffee.
