Christina Ricci in Jonathan Saunders

Posted on February 15, 2012

You know what’s the best thing about Christina, from a style perspective?

Christina Ricci attends the ELLE Style Awards 2012 in London in Jonathan Saunders.

Jonathan Saunders Resort 2012 Collection

She’s got a flair for the dramatic. We love that. Most actresses her age don’t have that understanding, but most actresses her age didn’t grow up in show business, which tends to make you an innately dramatic person for life.

Do we like this? A little. It’s head-turning and it flatters the hell out of her. but black gowns with sheer material over the arms and neck tend to read a bit mature, since these are the tricks deployed by the 60+ ladies when dressing up. And then there’s the hair. We feel the internet, after years of making fivehead jokes at her expense, may have scarred her just a little. Yes, she’s got a face made for bangs, but this is perhaps a bit blunt and limp-looking for our tastes. Then there’s the fact that she’s orange. But as first impressions go, this look has got it going on. As tiny as she is, we imagine she turned some heads when she walked into that room.

from the thumbnail i thought, “did Samantha Jones dye her hair?”  she is too young for this look.  she should shove this in the back of the closet & pull it out in 30 yrs.  then, she will look slamming.  but now she looks like a troll in an old lady’s dress.

      • Anonymous

Yes!  I totally see the Samantha vibe.  Although I actually like the dress on her.

      • http://profiles.google.com/napaisagem na paisagem

i actually thought of victoria principal (THAT’S how old i am…)

        • Anonymous

I did not recognize her as Christina Ricci even after I opened the link….

    • Anonymous

This would have looked better with her normal pallor.

      • Anonymous

I wonder if it would have invited Morticia Addams jokes?

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kimberly-Burke/100002384493067 Kimberly Burke

I agree that it would look lovely with her natural skin tone.  I detest the “tan”.  But now that you mention it LesYeuzHiboux, you are right too.

          • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I pretty much always like it better with her natural skin tone, so I may not be the person to ask.  But then, I always thought Morticia had great style (that same dramatic flair:).

            • Anonymous

I’m also a big fan of Morticia. If I were ever compared to her, I would consider it a huge compliment, lol.

    • http://twitter.com/Moondragonic Charlotte

There’s not a single thing I don’t love about this look. Love the dress, the hair, the make-up, that little smirk, everything. Definitively drama done well.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_64HSRZWCSJ5RBFGCWDLFQOICYM G

Love everything about this.  She looks amazing and curvalicious.

      • leilah

Just imagine how “curvalicious” she would have looked it she’d retained her former rack…..

    • Anonymous

Love this girl!  This a Monet Love thing – the full-length shots are amazing and I dig all the elements.  On the close-up, I realize I do not love the Blonde Ambition Tour outer-bra thing, but that is a minor quibble.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kimberly-Burke/100002384493067 Kimberly Burke

I didn’t even notice the seaming of the bust until you mentioned it and I have to agree.  Luckily, there are no cut-outs below the bust, that we’ve been seeing everywhere.  That would have made the “bra” stand out in a really bad way.

    • Anonymous

I don’t like this. I don’t know why I don’t like it, because she looks beautiful in every way (except for the orange skin). But it just doesn’t look like her to me.

Maybe because her hair looks so severe in its bang-ness. She looks very ’80s R&B back-up singer.

    • Anonymous

And everything always fits! I may not always like it but I do admire she understands tailoring. Look at this: the proportions are such that she seems to be the same height as the model — rather than a foot or more shorter! Amazing trick. I wonder how often she borrows garments, as this is surely not a sample (the sleeves probably had to be hacked six inches).

      • Anonymous

It took me a bit of time to figure out that she’s short because she usually does a really good job with proportions. It’s one of those crazy scale things where it suddenly becomes apparent she’s a doll when she stands next to a person of average height. Sort of like how Victoria Secret models often seem quite curvy sexy, and then you stand them next to a regular model and realize they are the same size, and stand them next to a normal-sized person and realize they are TINY. Tom Cruise has that working as long as he doesn’t stand next to a female costar in heels.

      • http://eclectictsunami.blogspot.com/ Cassie

It’s kind of amazing how she looks so LITHE. She is teeny-tiny, and although she’s very slender now (maybe a little too slender, IMHO), she has a naturally curvy shape. That cannot be easy to dress, but she looks fierce as shit.

    • http://twitter.com/GaraStJames Gara St. James

Wow, that hardly looks like Christina. It DOES read a bit too mature for her, but she is working the heck out of the look.

    • http://twitter.com/ShelfAfterlife Shelf Afterlife

I see tan, but I don’t think she looks orange.  The bangs are a bit much, but overall I think she looks good.

      • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

I’m not seeing any orange either. She’s just not as pale as usual.

      • Anonymous

I also see tan, and am not liking it, but it IS a different look for her.
As far as the bangs? I don’t like them normally on her, but here it seems like an echo of the bodice to neck gathers, so to me, they work.

      • http://twitter.com/ClairRose483 Clair Ellis

        I see no orange either.

    • Anonymous

There’s something about the dress+hairstyle+orange that makes her look out of proportion to my eye. I think it’s the way the lines in the sheer top expand that’s making her chest look oddly wide. Dislike.

    • http://www.facebook.com/Curefreak Daniel Wheeler

      did not even recognize her.

    • Anonymous

I wonder if I would have liked this better without sleeves.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

I’m getting a Liz Tailor Cleopatra vibe from this- it’s striking, but seems dated. Looks like a costume- but a nice one.

    • http://twitter.com/susanpcollier Susan Collier

I swear, Anjelica Houston hasn’t aged a day!

    • Lauren Stanisic

the overall look is impressive, but the sheer portion seems ill fitted. especially the sleeves.  on the model, the sheer portion seemed to fit and flatter better.

    • Anonymous

Mature is OK when you always look like a nine-year-old anyway. And the look is youthed-up a bit with the bangs, which I LOVE.

    • Anonymous

Bangs are her best look, but ideal when paired with longer-length hair.  Then she is rocking it.

    • Anonymous

for some reason, the first photo just doesn’t look like her.  she looks like a forty-something latin bombshell.  why wear huge earrings if you’re going to cover them up with your hair?   i love the fit of the dress and the details on the torso, but if i see another black dress…….

      • oohsparkley!

Why wear huge earrings…? Because we like them!  :)

    • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

Christina who? I would never have recognized her.

    • Anonymous

I want to like it very much, which is almost the same thing as liking it.

    • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

She looks fantastic from head to toe.

    • Anonymous

She is a little orange, I agree.  Too bad she didn’t stick to her natural skin color.

    • Anonymous

I don’t know. She does look a bit daughter of Morticia Addams here; Wednesday all growed up….

    • Judy_J

I seriously didn’t recognize her at first.  Her face looks totally different.  The dress is a bit mature for her, but she wears it well and she’s working it.

    • Anonymous

Doesn’t look like her at all — is that a spray-on tan?

      I do like the dress.

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

My guess would be yes.  Self-tanners often don’t work very well on the very pale — you need melanin to react to the chemicals, and when you have so little…

        • Anonymous

On the skin tone spectrum I fall between pale and Powder, so I have always had paleness issues & I think I know what’s going down.  I spray tan fairly regularly only because it does help even out the skin tone, so long as you don’t Jersey Shore it.

I’m thinking she spray tanned AND her make-up team went a little bronzer heavy, hence the odd tint.  Given that it’s more prominently orange-y in the full length, that makes me feel that make-up had a hand in the shade, in addition to the tan juice.

          • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Gee we must be the same color!  Though I NEVER tan in any fashion — spray tans just never look quite right on me, self-tanners just leave me the same color with dirty patches, and I’m white enough to reflect the sun so I don’t tan at all.

I would think you’re right about the process there.  Though it is difficult to adjust make-up when you significantly change your coloring, so I’m willing to give her a pass on that one.

            • Anonymous

Ah, my moon burn sister! Best joke I ever got my utter paleness was a classmate saying: “The whitest part of my butt is still darker than the darkest part of you.” haha

And there are some good spray tans out there…I only do it because of historic sun poisoning has given me some uneven skin tones and a light spray tan = less makeup and that’s a win for me. :)

    • Anonymous

I think the hair and makeup are strange. What look is she going for here?

      • MilaXX

         feels kinda 70’s retro, no?

    • Anonymous

I’ll admit that on first glance, with the tan and severe bangs, I thought this was Rashida Jones.

The dress is alright, but a little too mature.

    • Anonymous

This dress is doing amazing things for her proportions, she doesn’t look long-waisted at all.

She also doesn’t look orange on my computer screen.

      • MilaXX

perhaps not orange but overly and likely artificially tan.

    • Anonymous

Not only didn’t I recognize her, I honestly wondered whether TLo had mistaken someone else for Christina Ricci.

      • Anonymous

Ditto. She looks like a PR Mia/Maya merger.

    • Anonymous

      i love the look.

    • Cathy S

I think she looks fabulous. Except for the “tan.” She looks so tall and regal.

    • Anonymous

I think the bangs soften her face nicely.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

See, the sheer doesn’t read “mature” to my eye as much as “cold”.  I’ve seen a lot of that on women of every age in winter — don’t ask me why since it doesn’t make you any warmer at all — in the northern midwest winters.

    • Anonymous

That’s not Christina Ricci, that’s Cher.

    • MilaXX

Perhaps it’s seeing the different hairdo’s on PAN AM, but I really don’t like her hair here. It has a helmet quality to it. The skin is way too orange. She’s working the dress and the makeup other than the bad skin tone is nice I just think she doesn’t have to default to this same hairstyle to disguise the fivehead.

    • Anonymous

      She looks fantastic, full stop.

    • Anonymous

      She looks so tall!

    • Anonymous

It is a good thing you told us it was Ms. Ricci – I would not have recognized her. Never a good thing IMO. Her hair reminds me of that pic of the cat wearing a lime helmet. Also not a good thing.

Holy cow.  I saw the small picture and thought ‘What the hell did Thandie Newton do to her face?’ and then I realized it was Christina Ricci and I was like ‘What the Hell did Christina Ricci do to her face?’

    • Sara__B

She’s #1 on my Irrational Celebrity Like List, but I think I’m being rational when I say she looks fabulous. She’s working the dress and the room and what her mama gave her. Well done!

      • Anonymous

Actually she’s working less than mama gave her. Remember the notable breast reduction?

    • Anonymous

When I saw the first picture, I thought it was Naya Rivera from Glee!!

    • Anonymous

I keep wondering why she is doing that hip thrust to the side pose all the time now? Did someone tell her it makes her look less — something? Or more something? It just seems so awkward, like my 6 year old daughter when she plays “model.” Other than that, she looks great, even though I hate the hair and hate the dress. I don’t know why I think she looks great, perhaps just because she looks healthy and happy.

    • Anonymous

I think she looks absolutely stunning here!  Best she’s looked in a long while, in my opinion.

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

I like it. Not sure about the bag, but I can hardly see it.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PRM766RS56X25A5742XLACK2LM Sam

      Her head looks so tiny

    • Anonymous

I love the dress on her; it’s sexy as hell.
The hair: I’m kind of digging it. She’s got a serious Cleopatra thing going on, and I would never knock a girl rocking the Cleopatra thing. I would, however, like to see her go a little softer with the hair. Just a little razoring would make a big difference.

Christina Ricci, starring in “From Rag Trade to RIches: The Mila Hermanovski Story,” this summer on LIFETIME!

    • Anonymous

IN. This look is bold and dramatic and she looks pretty damn gorgeous. Also, she looks really TALL in that first pic. I see how this is rather aging on her but she pulls it off nicely.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1248212910 Jessie Melcher Brown

All I can think is how much fun an Addams family movie with Wednesday all grown up would be :-)

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I like the entire look except the clutch.  Didn’t recognize her, though, until the close up.

    • Anonymous

The bust looks extremely weird. And the fabric looks cheap to me. The more I look at this the less I like it.

    • Anonymous

jesu criste, this girl + spray tan = NO!!  I can’t even see the outfit I’m so blindsided by the skin color.

    • http://ultimatevariety.blogspot.com/ Thombeau

I will always love her. No matter what.

    • Susan Crawford

Normally, sheer sleeves and bodice treatments are a no-go for me, but somehow they both work in this case. I really like this dress a lot! And while I think Christina DOES need bangs or a softly side swept do, this blunt cut isn’t flattering. I’m getting very tired of the pin-straight, flat-ironed look in general – and for Ricci, it truly does read “Little Wednesday Goes to NYFW”. But I do lovelovelove her, and the past few T & Lo posts featuring her have been awesome.

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I don’t understand the trend toward this — I get the smooth, stick straight thing.  But WHY no volume at the roots?  If your hair is that flat it makes it look a)thin and limp or (sometimes and) b) dirty.  It’s not attractive.  VERY VERY few women can pull off the flat-on-top look, so why is it suddenly everywhere?  I can flat iron mine and get volume back in at the roots, so I’m guessing the pro stylists can too…

    • Anonymous

Looks great–her attitude is her best accessory.

    • Anonymous

So, so weird. I can’t get past the fact that it doesn’t look like her… and the extreme body contortions also distract me to the point of not being able to appreciate the dress. The close-up is bad. She has looked so very much better than this.

    • Anonymous

She looks great. More tan than orange on my monitor, and I like her usual pale look better. But, she still looks great & I think it has a ton of glamor.

    • http://twitter.com/ClairRose483 Clair Ellis

I think she looks stunning. Maybe a little old for her, but then again I’d rather see her looking mature and fabulous than like a 5 cent hooker.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HREPOWNBVUBRIVPQCF3ST2IKDM Euphory

She really knows how to work her proportions.  She looks regal and tall in that first picture.

    • Anonymous

I agree with all of your points

    • http://twitter.com/IamDaBee Antonija Mitt

Yes–sheer sleeves and neckline read: middle-aged mom out on the town.  Her hair style is not quite flattering to her face. I understand that she might have thought bangs might soften her large forhead, but this style seems to squish her head a might.
And–more puddling at the HEM!  I hate that.

    • http://eclectictsunami.blogspot.com/ Cassie

It might be a bit too old for her, but whatever. I love this fabulous bitch.

    • Anonymous

This dress makes her chest look really strange to me.  There have to be much more flattering options out there…

    • Anonymous

Not the best dress for her.  But still, she looks more interesting and edgy than any {fill in the blank} generic blonde starlet in a nude tone gown.

    • Anonymous

I think the dress is stunning and I don’t even mind the tan, but I can not bring myself to like the hair. The girl needs bangs (which I can totally sympathize with, bc I’m in the same boat, although due more to multiple scars as opposed to a large forehead), but I think a softer and longer look would compliment her features much more. This is too Mila Hermanovski for me – and the world only needs one Mila.

    • Anonymous

I really like this, but I could see cutting the sleeves off to a cap sleeve. Might make it a little younger.

      • Anonymous

        Definitely. Great idea.

    • Anonymous

Damn girl, that dress looks great!  Just step over here for a sec & let me fluff up that hair a bit

    • Jena Lohrbach

She totally reminds me of an unadorned Cleopatra.

    • Anonymous

If only she had been pale!

      • Lisa

I was just going to say, “Gorgeous, but she could have toned down the bronzer!”  I really love this look on her other than that.

    • allisankelly

We watched Sleepy Hollow over the weekend. She was so much cuter when she had some meat on her bones. I am not crazy about this look. The dress I like.

    • margaret meyers

Has she had more plastic surgery?

    • Anonymous

Like the dress, but I’m not loving the overall look. Maybe if she had pulled her hair back? I don’t know… just looks a bit too mature.

    • Anonymous

My vote is on a giant yes for the bangs. She looks terrific.

    • Anonymous

she looks good, but the fit in the shoulders is bugging me.  fitted correctly on the model it looks more… crisp.

    • Anonymous

I think she rocks the heavy bangs that are so in right now better than anyone but maybe Rooney Mara. And I still think she would have made a better Catwoman than whatsherface.

    • Anonymous

Love it.  I barely recognized her with those bangs, but they look really good on her.

    • http://www.fatladysings.us/ TFLS

Whomever her  recent stylist is, he/she deserves an award.  For the last year now she’s been looking fabulous.  The haircut was the key IMO.  It flatters her best feature (eyes) while hiding her worst (moon face).  The choice of couture is also a plus.  Almost every time she struts down a red carpet these days it’s a hit.  Maybe this is just another black dress….but it’s a black dress that looks great on her.  Her weight looks healthy too.  No more skinny, skinny to make her face look less round.  Kelly Osbourne has that problem too, though her face is too square.  It’s still out of proportion to the rest of her small frame.  Kelly’s got it right for her unusual looks, and I’m glad to see Ms. Ricci has as well.  Brava.

    • Kirsten Henry

I had a surprisingly violent reaction to this dress

    • Anonymous

There’s something powerful about this look, even though it skews mature.

    • Anonymous

The bosom in a different fabric looks like she put on a black strapless bra over the dress. It really cheapens it. Better all in one material, one piece.
      She looks weird to me.

    • Anonymous

“Then there’s the fact that she’s orange.”

The delivery – like the hem of your trousers, I’m sure – is impeccable.

Love her and this dress but that bag looks dreadful, or maybe it’s an odd angle.

    • Anonymous

      She looks wonderful and confident!

    • http://frockpaperscissors.blogspot.com/ kvlm

Too mature for her and it makes me sad that she looks so “normal” now.  I liked her fivehead.

    • Anonymous

I think she needs to be taller for this dress. It’s aging, but might be pull-off-able by someone with more stature.
