Christian Siriano Fall 2012 Collection

Posted on February 13, 2012

Christian Siriano’s always had a flair for the dramatic in his designs, but there was something more refined about the kind of drama he was serving up this time. There was a sense that he was appealing to a more sophisticated and slightly more mature customer. There were, of course, plenty of the gorgeous gown confections for which he’s known, but they were sleeker and more chic than the exuberant princess gowns of the past. Also on display were a range of pared down dresses and separates in blacks, whites and reds; the kind of simple, chic clothes the discerning customer would buy and pair beautifully, with modern details or shapes to make them interesting and typically Christian. He continues to grow as a designer, which is part of what makes him so watchable, and this collection shows a more grown-up and elegant take on his aesthetic.

Our little Christian is truly on his way to becoming the next great American designer. If he continues in this vein, he will become a major player.

      Beautiful collection!

A Christian Siriano collection after my own heart! I love the burgundies (especially the first) and the silver-greys. WTG, Princess!

    • Sam Corbett

I love the black dress with the fish scales and the tulle (middle of the bottom row here, and I believe also the second-to-last look to walk). The whole collection was very chic as a whole – Princess PS made a wise choice in hiring Danielle Nachmani to work with him.

    • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

Lovely. This collection really justifies the NY Times article on him.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1046681022 Paula Berman

Love it! The gown with the mock turtleneck sleeveless leather top and flowy bottom (4th row down, far left) should be Rooney Mara’s Oscar gown.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

CS dresses have always been red carpet material, but to me this is the first time that women like Rooney Mara or even Angelina Jolie come to mind while looking at the pictures. There’s an edge that wasn’t quite there before.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HREPOWNBVUBRIVPQCF3ST2IKDM Euphory

That leather-top dress reminds me a lot of Angelina Jolie’s leather dress, back when she was actually a daring dresser.

      • Anonymous

Ooh, good call. I’d also love to see her in the red one above it.

    • Anonymous

I like the black dress, second row on the left and the black dress, third row on the right. It’s a really nice collection.

    • Anonymous

      Great job, Siriano!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Patrick-Cleary/1201575213 Patrick Cleary

In a few more years, Project Runway is going to be nothing but a curious footnote in this major designer’s CV.

    • Anonymous

3rd on the 4th row … Lovely.  And some good-looking white coats too.  Last black evening gown in last row also beautiful.  I like it when he goes easy on the volume.  Someone had a gown of his on Grammy red carpet last night and it was kind of ruined by the sheer ridic volume on the bottom.

    • Anonymous

Gorgeous collection. I really like the deep, blood red.  My only complaint is the biker jacker over the gown.  It’s been done too often.

      • Kyle Crawford

did he call SJP or did she call him ?

      • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

I just realized that he did that–but it looks so much better than the SJP version, to my mind. It’s as if he decided that if people want to do this they need the right gown to do it with.

    • http://twitter.com/wonderdivaEtsy wonderdivaEtsy

      Beautiful!

    • Anonymous

There’s a lot to love about the collection and many of the pieces look crazy flattering even on non-modelesque figures.

    • Anonymous

This collection is simply stunning! It makes me so proud to see him putting out such chic, elegant and sophisticated work. It’s really nice to see someone from PR become such a success.

    • Anonymous

If Project Runway can take credit for the launch of Christian Siriano, they have done their work. It’s just a reality show, after all. To have brought such a extraordinary designer to the marketplace is a pretty incredible distinction.

    • http://twitter.com/thedogsmother thedogsmother

      Very pretty!

    • Anonymous

The only thing I don’t like in this collection is the too dark lipstick!

      • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

I don’t like it either but I realized that for most of the looks it is great.

      • http://profiles.google.com/grandiva1968 e jerry powell

It’s like something out of a Clara Bow movie.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Adore the collection and him.  I can’t wait when we all stop tagging him along with Project Runway. He no longer needs that, this man knows what the hell he is doing.

    • Kyle Crawford

Is it just me , or is this reading- with the leather – a little MK  ??? LOVE some of them, Someone NEEDS wear row three #1 on the Oscar red carpet… but who?

      • http://twitter.com/BrienneCalmer Brienne Calmer

…whoever can rip the Santa Claus belt off it first?  Otherwise, I’m in agreement.

    • Anonymous

I like the deep red color that he is using, particularly the pieces that are center of the second row and fourth row, right.  The black gown with the leather(?) halter top in that same row is also gorgeous, but the one in the second row right is godawful.

For the most part, he seems to have (thank goodness) toned down the oddly contradictory secretarial and overly-ruffle-y/puffy tones that I always loathed about his earlier work (and that should have had him auf-ed on more than one occasion), and I think he may actually be learning the shape of a woman’s body.

I still don’t like leather jackets with formal gowns; that’s a fad that can’t disappear too quickly for me.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1326120071 Gaby Ripoll

Yep, the 90s are back in a force.

    • http://twitter.com/lenabena_ Elena

      LUHV the red gown.

I like quite a lot of these pieces, actually.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=506473106 Mori Clark

not a big fan of the burgundy tbh, wish these had been punchier in terms of colour. can’t deny that he’s improved and gotten more mature…but my personal tastes are immature, then, cos i’m not a big fan of any of these. a bit generic.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tim-Wong/507815939 Tim Wong

I get that its grown up…
but i miss the ruffles and puffy sleeves….

    • Call me Bee

Yes–much more elegant and sophisticated!  There’s still a few little crazy touches here and there, but then, it wouldn’t  be a Siriano collection without them.  Absolutley love the white coats!  Well done, Christian.  My, how you’ve grown.

    • http://www.facebook.com/kathy.lewinski Kathy Lewinski

      Oh, those white coats! Gorgeous!

    • Anonymous

      Zzzzz

I love Christian, and there are some beautiful pieces here, but just ok for me.  I read that he hired a stylist to tone down his collection.  She styles Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and Maggie Gyllenhall.  Really? Have we ever seen them look anything other than bag lady?

    • Mariah J

I guess I love the fantasy because I prefer his past collections, but this is lovely as well.

    • Anonymous

absolutely LOVE that black gown with the full skirt and the turtleneck/halter top in the 4th row…looks like a leather bodice.

He really is growing in his taste and sophistication.  Jolly good show!

    • Lisa Salmon

I want the red print blouse and skirt so bad!!

    • Kwei-lin Lum

He made quite practical clothes with an eye for the paying customer.  I miss the audacity of past collections.

      • Anonymous

Me, too. I am bored and saddened by this collection from the exuberant Siriano.

    • MilaXX

It’s really nice to see his growth as a designer. I really like this collection. That burgundy color is gorgeous.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

      I miss the puffy sleeves.

    • allisankelly

Really. Just one of each in my size, please. This stuff is gorgeous and he really does look like he’s grown/growing as a designer.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=570976850 Jen Greenberg Roberts

      Stunning!

    • Anonymous

Christian shows so much growth with this collection.  Bravo.

    • Anonymous

      Love it all

    • Anonymous

I don’t know – it is not very exuberant, which I always expect from him. It is like a depressed Siriano collection, and not just the colors. The lines are all more contained. I hope he doesn’t lose what made him special.

    • Anonymous

Good for him! I think he may have truly arrived.

    • http://theargiehome.blogspot.com/ Gus Casals

I can live with this being the Project Runway true legacy.
Does that make him the Kelly Clarkson or the Carrie Underwood of the show?

    • Anonymous

Good lord, I actually love some of these! They are actually wearable!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

For some reason, I thought of Laura Bennett when looking at this collection. The white dress in the top row especially reminded me of her Paris couture dress. Could be the redhead in the second row made me think of her as well. :p

    • Anonymous

Amazing. I never in a million years thought I’d say this about his designs but I’d wear every single one here.

    • Anonymous

I lived through the 90’s once, and that was enough.  I just don’t see anything fresh here!

    • Anonymous

Wow. Certainly a great collection. You’re so right, he’s really grown and matured as a designer. I am loving the print dress and leather jacket, as well as the metallics. Really beautiful. Wonder who will score one of the gowns for the Red Carpet?

    • Anonymous

This appears to be a very confident collection.    The preciousness is dialed back.

Didn’t Tom and Lorenzo say that there was an article in the New York Times about Christian?   I looked for it, but couldn’t find it.   I can’t remember the post when they put the link.

    • Anonymous

From your mouth to my closet, please.

I have never, never, never wanted a leather dress till I saw that one with the diagonal stripes and the zipper down the front.  wow.  at least it looks like leather.  is it?

    • Toto Maya

This is probably my favorite collection of his yet. Simply gorgeous. I’m so proud of him, like I had anything to do with his success just by watching the show >_>. But I’m just happy to see him be so successful when we’ve seen so many others fail.

    • Anonymous

What a gorgeous collection. Yes, please.

    • Anonymous

Dammit. I know he never will – but I really wish Jay McCarroll would get back in the game.

    • BuffaloBarbara

I love the red one that you’re featuring in the post identifier icon–how many times will we see that on the RC this year?

    • Anonymous

Awesome.  Glad to see he continues to grow as a designer.

    • Anonymous

Little Ferocia Coutura has really grown up.  I approve wholeheartedly.  It’s a beautiful collection.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Tres chic though not as exciting as his last collection.

    • Anonymous

Does this make him Queen Puffy Sleeves now?

I love his collection. Of all the Project Runway contestants ever, his are the ones I look forward to the most.

      • Anonymous

        Empress.

    • Anonymous

      Fantastic.

    • Anonymous

Just wow.  I mean, the styling and the background color make this collection look particularly yummy.  I’m not quite sure how the clothes would look if they weren’t presented so flawlessly.  Hopefully we’ll see some on the RC and find out!

    • Anonymous

If he keeps going like this, a decade or two from now, his debut on Project Runway will be a footnote.

    • Anonymous

I think that first white dress with the “wings” would make such a fabulous diva-licious wedding gown

    • Anonymous

Everyone is on the “Ballgown with Biker Jacket” bandwagon…..

    • Anonymous

I LOVE the red one, third down on the left.  Want!  Also, I want the body to fit into it… ‘le Sigh…

    • http://twitter.com/HotMessHousWife Sammi M

LOVE. The leather jackets paired with gowns is so cute, and I want the black dress with the attached capelet, it’s SO elegant.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I love that PR gave him the exposure to start out so young.  It’s fascinating to watch him grow this way, and without the money and connections he got from the show, I can’t imagine too many 22 year olds could mount the sort of shows he’s been doing since.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CQPXLNCBM5CZSHZZXJDHPVFS7E Buffy

Beautiful!  If I hadn’t read the caption I wouldn’t have guessed it was Christian, he’s really evolving and maturing (unlike some of our PR alums *cough*Kenley*cough* *ahchoo*Kara*ahchoo*

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I’ve never been a big fan of PPS, but this collection is beautiful, refined, and elegant.  Love.

      Beautiful. Love all the gowns.

      A beautiful collection.

For the first time, I’m seeing maturity, uncompromised taste, refinement, and most of all restraint from CS.
      Bravo.

    • irielle

I’ll be honest. I thought Christian was getting by on his personality more than his design talent, but I really like this collection. I’m no fashion maven with great insights in design, but to me this collection looks both elegant and interesting.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Heather-McIlrath/673340132 Heather McIlrath

my favorite collection of his yet! who knew princess puffy sleeves was capable of such editing and high levels of sophistication!

I don’t think I’ve ever liked anything of his more!  This collection is such a nice departure from his frothy dresses,

I wish he had an affordable ready to wear line. I LOVE look 9 – the dress with the visible zipper down the front.  Now THAT is how to do a visible zipper.  And I want look 22 – the sleevless burgundy cocktail dress.  Want so bad.

That fur (hopefully faux) drape is divatastic.  Bitch needs a turban with that.

    • Anonymous

Ohhh yes. I would happily wear 2/3 of this, which is not something I’ve ever been able to say about his collections before.

    • Anonymous

I like the collection and I like that his models are ethnically diverse. He is just at savvy at marketing as he is in design.

    • Anonymous

Glad to see he can move beyond fierce.  Love the separates.

    • Lisa

I love that little elf, I just do.  He’s amazing – I love all of this!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MBZQXGWCTBDTAZMEM4S2EJUNUQ Katie

That leather jacket/gown combination makes me want to go back in time to a high school prom. How awesome would it be to stroll into the gym in that.

    • Anonymous

I liked all these clothes…when other people did them.  They were a borrowed lot from many others the last 2 decades…but didn’t relate to each other…just pieces…still he is young and tryng and finding his way.

    • Beth G

      4th row… 3rd dress…. Grandmother of the Bride….

LOVING this.  Fabulous outerwear, gowns, everything.

I wish I had the bad-bitch body (and wallet) to wear that zipper-front dress.  It’s awesome.
