Cate Blanchett for UK Harper’s Bazaar

Posted on February 29, 2012

We almost never start the day off with an editorial. We don’t know why, but we tend to see them as afternoon and evening posts; something pretty to look at when you’re in the midst of or near the end of the day. Of course it’s a silly thing to think about because the number of people who will read this post days after it’s posted is much greater than the number who will read it in the next couple of hours, but we all cling to our silly fictions and for us, the rhythm of our posting day resulted in a self-imposed rule we didn’t even know we held to before this very moment: magazine shots after lunch, but never before.

But we’re coming off a whirlwind of red carpet posting that has – no bullshit – literally left us both a little sore. We figured something pretty and somewhat less mercenary than stars working the biggest night of the year for cash and prizes was called for right now. Cate won’t let us down. Give us something pretty with our coffee, Cate.

Cate Blanchett featured in the April 2012 issue of UK Harper’s Bazaar photographed by Alexi Lubomirski and styled by Cathy Kasterine. Hair: Nicola Clarke. Makeup: Mary Greenwell.

“An actress once advised me, ‘Make sure you do your own laundry – it will keep you honest.'”

“There is a film I’d love to direct, but I just don’t know if I’ve got the patience. In theatre, you can have an idea and get on with it. In film, you hear of people sitting on an idea for eight years, by which time the idea has changed and evolved and become something else.”

“My husband went through a phase of giving me vacuum cleaners, sewing machines and Mixmasters. It’s ironic. He is encouraging me to develop a hobby, I think.”

Love the Berardi. She’s looking great, the hair is aces.

  • Judy S

Cate the Werq-aholic. She makes every outfit look better than on the model.

    •ía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

It’s that freaking fabulous face, it’s like the camera owes here and she’s here to collect.

  • Michelle Argento

No one should ever give Cate a mixmaster.

  • Scarlet39

    Simply gorgeous

  • serenitynow02

She looks good, though I find the editorial not very interesting. The McQueen on the floor looks like a fancy bathroom rug. And why is Cate passed out on the floor? Was it all too much for her?

    • sagecreek

I was going with “dead, wet dog”, but “fancy bathroom rug” works, too!

    • Melissa Brogan

I think she’s actually on a table or a runway. (Those gold bits in the background are chairs, right?)

Either way you’re right, does seem like a very posh carpet. Not that she doesn’t look fantastic, but it’s kind of a weird spread.

    • Irina Ryabchuk

      And it’s not even a floor, it’s a dinner table…

      • serenitynow02

I think you are right. I guess she’s the main course…

      • Lori

Yes, it’s a table and she looks like some sort of bad food item. Some sort of cooking experiment gone horribly wrong, like when I try to cook without a recipe. Whatever the idea was behind the picture I’m pretty sure I’m not getting it.

    • sid123

      mold…I was thinking mold

    • Laurie Bergman

And I thought, “Why did they rake the leaves all over her?”

  • Shannon Stewart

I’m wondering what hobby her husband thinks vacuum cleaners will develop… ‘Cause I’m sure she doesn’t need to clean her own house and only crazy people enjoy cleaning.

  • Kayceed

She looks so beautiful in a suit, but I must admit I’m not loving the Berardi trousers – it looks as if one’s Spanx are showing through.

    • Charlotte Horseman

You are right!  I didn’t see it at first – I guess I thought it was just the light.

    • Sara Leigh Merrey

Then the model’s wearing exactly the same Spanx. I think it’s just the trouser design.

      • kimmeister

Whoa, I hadn’t noticed it either, but now that I see it, what a weird design choice!

  • Kiltdntiltd

I think she and the stylists together batted this out of the park.  No, its not the most innovative editorial on earth, but she looks fantastic in every shot and the clothes are equally well served.

  • umeboshi

i wasnt aware that most of your readers werent daily (hourly?) visitors such as myself… *hides behind sleeve*

    • AthenaJ

Seriously… sometimes I feel as if I’m a TLo stalker!

    • Pants_are_a_must

I do that somedays just to keep my sanity, or whatever I have left of it.

  • Sharon Iverly

I can’t not love anything she does, basically. It’s a sickness.

  • SewingSiren

She always looks good. Especially in difficult to wear clothes. Kind of like Tilda that way.

  • Lilithcat

In theatre, you can have an idea and get on with it.

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

The woman’s delusional. Either that, or she’s channeling Mickey Rooney as Andy Hardy.

  • Claudia Berry

oh she’s just gorgeous.  love her.

  • annie_wonder

‘Make sure you do your own laundry – it will keep you honest.’ – I can’t hear that with out thinking of CC Bloom in Beaches.

  • EEKstl

Cate, like Tilda, can do no wrong in my book.

  • Sara Leigh Merrey

She wears those clothes so much better than the models. I love Cate.

  • Kiltdntiltd

Don’t hide, we’re here to support you.  I cannot get through my day without multiple fixes of T+Lo.

    • formerlyAnon

I believe that you mean “enable,” rather than “support.” 😉

      • Kiltdntiltd

Well, yeah, I suppose I do.    We are all of us here, addicted and proudly so.

  • TieDye64

    Ah, she’s beautiful. Love her.

Thanks for the (for me) very early in the day pretty.

  • formerlyAnon

If she doesn’t mess with the underpinnings of her face, she’s going to be even more striking as an old woman. (Yes, I know I am probably a decade or so behind in coming to that realization.)

  • jannanna

I love that she hasn’t had her nose shaved down.  LOVE.  A perfectly beautiful imperfect person.

  • girlritenext2him

Um…I was unaware that it was the norm to check in on a less-than-hourly basis. I mean, full disclosure here, I’ve been known to check in not only on an hourly basis, but when that hourly check-in yields no fruit, to hit refresh over and over and pray to the fashion gods for just one more post.

    This may be a problem.

    • Kiltdntiltd

I’m right there with you, m’dear.

    • formerlyAnon

I have been known to feel slightly guilty if I’m having a busy stretch at work and don’t check the site for a day or two. As if important tasks have been left undone.

    • Deborah Jozayt

My problem is reading comments, then hitting refresh to read more comments, then hitting refresh again, then hitting refresh again, then hitting refresh again, then hitting refresh again, then hitting refresh again, then hitting refresh again, then hitting refresh again, then hitting refresh again…….

You people just can’t quit yer yapping and I love it!

      • tinyredlocks

Glad to see that I’m not the only one that does that! Hitting refresh now. Again….  :-)

  • Kyle Crawford

How much do we love the fact that our Cate is rocking that Antonio Berardi FANTASTIC white suit better than the model !!!

  • MDH3

I have the wildest girlcrush on her.  She is so fabulous that I have to forgive her for having her knees wide open in that last shot (yes, I have turned into my mother.)

    • Qitkat

I, too, am my mother. I always cringe at knees wide open. Even in a bee-you-ti-ful pantsuit.

  • Jecca2244

Wow. making American Vogue look like a 2 cent publication. gorgeous.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

How incredibly lovely, tasteful, elegant.  And the clothes are fabulous as well.

  • PeggyOC

Love Huh.  Could not love more unless I jumped the fence.  And for her, I might.

  • Usman Hamid

I woke up today shocked and amazed to see an editorial. I tend to read this blog in “real time” say, 75-80% of the time.I feel an editorial is more Nico “Sunday Morning” and less Dolly Parton “9 to 5”

  • BeeBeauNYC

These looks all look better on Cate than the models. Girlfriend never disappoints.

    • Kiltdntiltd

True facts, BeeBeau.  Our lovely Kate always serves it up better than any model ever does.

  • sarahofalessergod

Cate in that white suit takes me to a very happy place.  That woman is one of my biggest crushes, and that picture is one reason why.

  • BayTampaBay

Wonderful! Full Marks!  Kate looks better in the clothes than the model…especially in the McQueen.

  • Judy_J

Fabulous! She is my ideal woman.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Not a huge fan of the smoky eye on her. It makes her look a wee bit too harsh. LUUUUUUV HER, though.

  • SapphoPoet

How tall is she? Those suit pants make her look like she’s on stilts.

    • BrooklynBomber

I was also wondering how tall she is. I’ve always loved a white pantsuit, but I want to look like that in a white pantsuit, and it ain’t gonna happen.

      • kimmeister

I want to look like that too, but white pants are challenging for a girl with stumpy legs and thunder thighs. *sigh*

  • nancylee61

She is just gorgeous!! Love her, ever since “Elizabeth.” Can’t believe Paltrow got that Oscar that year over Blanchett. Crazy.

Anyway, the pantsuit is fabulous on her. I really like that designer, am going to look him up. And her hubby sounds adorable!! Everyone needs a hobby – I was just thinking about that, if celebrities ever paint, or sew or birdwatch, or do they just look in the mirror? Just wondering. :)

    • Snailstsichr

I went to see the Talented Mr Ripley with my (other) sister. All I can remember of the movie is my sister turning to me and whispering, “I hope Cate got to hiss ‘Bitch, you stole my Oscar’ at  Gwyneth.” I spent the rest of the movie hoping Cate would have a chance to dump Gwyneth in the Canal.

      • EEKstl

There are SO many awards that movie stole from more deserving folks.  Still a head-scratcher to me.

  • Snailstsichr

This weekend I got to see an old friend in St Louis and my sister who was visiting from California – and both are devoted T Lo fans. It was like a mini convention! Getting to squeee about T Lo made up for the fact that I was traveling and was reduced to squinting at the posts on my iPhone.
Oh, and Cate looks divine. I now crave a tux, even though I have no place to wear it.

  • sanja_ramic

Gosh that woman can wear clothes. Love her! And while we’re discussing our obsessive love of TLo, I may as well point out that sometimes I stay up really late just so I can check out the new posts before I go to bed (I live in Australia, and it’s currently about 3am here, I think I may need to join a support group).

  • Ass Kicking Adviser

I love that she looks better in the Berardi suit than the model. Way better.

  • mjude

    love her & bowing down

  • Sarah Winningham

I just hate feathers on clothes. It’s not even a moral, poor dead birds thing. The way other people feel about clothes made with human hair – that’s how gross feathers are to me.

    • pippitypup

Birds shed feathers annually, so no birds die to acquire them.

  • AC

    J’adore Cate.

  • Kevin VanOrd

She looks fantastic, though am I the only one tired of seeing that McQueen look popping up all over?

  • Amelia Logan

ugh i want to buy this so i can hang these pictures on my wall. can you get bazaar UK in america?

  • mommyca

    oh…. I love love love Cate……

  • prettybigkitty

She is so amazing.  This makes me love her even more.  As if that were possible.

  • LuisaNL

she looks gorgeous as always and is giving some serious face. Love her.

  • Aaminah Khan

    LOVE. HER.

  • ri_dic

    I don’t get the adoration.

  • granddelusion

Less mercenary! No shit! Although this is Blanchett selling herself.

  • Anathema_Device

I adore her. She was made to wear that white Beradi pantsuit.

  • Megan Sullivan

Love the last shot and the white pant suit.

  • Toto Maya

It’s Cate Motherfucking Blanchett, what you want?

  • VicksieDo

    LOVE !!!!

  • Susan Crawford

    Just gorgeous. Just Cate.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

OMG I love the McQueen gown.  She is so f’ing fabulous.

  • MilaXX

J’adore Cate. She can work these clothes as well as if not better than the models.

  • DesertDweller79

Fabulous!  I love the white pant suit.  She looks spectacular in it.  Way better than the model.

  • CatherineRhodes

I hate the trend of pants hemmed so long that they cover the shoe and brush the floor. It just looks dumb.

  • natalia h

  • gubblebumm

All I can see is a crazy doctor in her scary mansion….who is daily shrinking so her clothes are all too big…who never gets any sun…the shrredded dress on the floor, it feels like silence of the lambs to me…its just a visceral thing

  • joything

“…  stars working the biggest night of the year for cash and prizes …”

Ah, THAT’s the appeal of the Oscars in these latter days!  It’s “Let’s Make a Deal” for millionaires!

  • texashistorian

Editorial is wonderful: her comments are funny and I can imagine her delivering them in a dead-pan voice. I think, however, that she looks a little like road kill in the Alexander McQueen gown photograph.
