Blake Lively in Valentino

Posted on February 06, 2012

This is a really cynical, kinda bitchy thing to say, but … well, we can’t find a way to finish that sentence. Our point:

Blake Lively attends Godiva’s “The Sweetest Story Ever Told Sweepstakes” in Valentino. Shoes by Christian Louboutin.

We just don’t know what to do with a Blake Lively who’s wearing something tasteful and chic. Sure, after a couple minutes, we recovered enough to note that her hair’s kind of a mess, but our brains shut down for a good thirty seconds there. We couldn’t process it at all. It’s like rounding a corner and suddenly coming face to face with a cat tap-dancing.

She’s such a beautiful girl and the dress is nice and all, but I don’t think I will ever be able to get behind a white pump.

      • Anonymous

I hadn’t even noticed the white pumps, I was so in shock that there was no excessive boobage or leggage on display.
Yeah, the white pumps are a definite no.

    • Anonymous

she’d look awesome if her hair didn’t look so fried.

    • Anonymous

This outfit is just ehhh.  And the how the waistline looks when she’s not facing the camera head-on isn’t my favorite

      • Anonymous

It’s almost giving her a baby bump.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PRM766RS56X25A5742XLACK2LM Sam

I think that dress looks terrible, from a design standpoint.

    • Anonymous

Not really digging that dress, honestly. It looks like she pulled a skirt on over a dress or is wearing a really fancy apron.

However, it is refreshing to see her covered up for a change.

I would much rather see tap dancing cats, though.

      • http://twitter.com/democracydiva Democracy Diva

I read that she literally did put a skirt over a dress. It’s apparently a Valentino skirt over a Valentino dress.

        • Anonymous

Was she getting ready to play strip poker?

          • Anonymous

I almost just snorted diet coke out my nose when I read your comment. Apparently I never learn and still try to eat or drink while reading TLo!

And you know Anna Wintour is going to go all crazy over this innovative approach.  I bet we will read this as One of the Most Important Things Ever Happened In the World soon.

        • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Is she trying to outdo Shailene Woodley? Is this going to become a thing now??

      • Anonymous

Looks like a big ol’ doily.

        • Anonymous

My thought exactly. One you’d smack on a homemade Valentines Day card, with one left over for an Easter card.

        • Anonymous

It most certainly does. In fact, my daughter’s Girl Scout troop just hosted a mother-daughter tea and I have some leftover doilies sitting on my kitchen counter. I’m gonna glue one to a white t-shirt today and declare myself the shit.

    • Lori

I can’t get  behind this. I appreciate that she put both the boobs and the legs away (good lord, do I appreciate it). However, I don’t like the dress. The pattern on the top is weirding me out and at first glance the ruffle on the skirt looked like eyelet. It’s not, but that doesn’t help all that much. And then there are the white pumps. Let us never speak of them again.

If this was an In or Out I’d be voting out.

      • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

        Precisely.

      • Anonymous

That second sentence says it all. *claps appreciatively*

I’m sorry, but I just cannot muster the energy . . . She just doesn’t register.
Rather like Bosworth and Biel, nothing comes through.

      • Anonymous

Oh snap – me too, all three of them

    • Jasmine Moten

That dress makes her look like she has a 80 year old’s body. Her waist appears to be boobs high.

    • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

The top of that dress looks like an appliqued t-shirt, the waist really isn’t hitting her right, I hate those shoes, and her hair looks gross. On the other hand, her knees and her tits are both covered up AT THE SAME TIME, so I suppose we can call that progress.

    • Anonymous

In my eyes, Ms. Lively is the type of girl who can look cute, hot or as seen here, even pretty. However, she lacks a certain grace that will ever allow her to look beautiful, at least not in my eyes.

      • Anonymous

Amen, sister. BTW love your “handle”.

Ugh…I think the dress is ugly. But, it is a tasteful length and the sweater puppets are put away. So good on that!

      bahahha cat tap dancing.

    • kschwarting

Okay, now I really want to see a cat tap dancing.  I can’t get that image out of my head.

Don’t care for the shoes, but love the rest. Hair doesn’t bother me.

Anyone else remember elderly female relatives who had those lace drapes on the backs and armrests of chairs?  They were called “antimacassars” and were supposed to cut down on wear & tear on the upholstery.  (you could take them off & wash them.)  That was the first thing my brain screamed when I saw this getup: ANTIMACASSAR!!  Which is SO not stylish.

      • Anonymous

I do remember those,  but I never knew they had a specific name.  I thought , similarly, doily.

Why do I know this? bit of trivia: Macassar was a brand of hair oil; antimacassars kept it off the backs of chairs. I’ve been waiting my whole adult life to use this!

I don’t think she looks good in this dress.  Her waist looks thick- doesn’t give her curves.

    • Anonymous

Now every time I see her I am going to see tap dancing cat. I bet that would make Gossip Girl much better.  Who else could we replace with dancing animals?

      • Anonymous

A tap dancing animal would be the only way I’d watch that show.

    • Joyce VG

I don’t like it. Should I like it?  I’d rather see the tap dancing cats honestly.

Isn’t she standing with the king of kitschy novels, Nicholas Sparks? ‘Nuff said.

I’m sure Blake’s white dress is see-through at the lower half, that’s why someone quickly grabbed the blue lace table cloth to make the pictures presentable…only explanation.  ;P

I kind of like her hair and fresh face…not right for that dress and event though.  Not sure what hair would be correct for THAT dress either….

    • Cynthia Yuen

Don’t worry. You can tell it’s still her because she’s posing boobs first.

      • Anonymous

Can she even pose differently? I was gonna comment the same on her Elle spread… miss Tyra would have kicked her out by now for lack of range.

As for the outfit… I feel it’s for a Lady Who Lunches. In the summer, at the Club, after her tennis lesson.

    • http://www.revivify.net Alex Smith

Tasteful, perhaps, but chic? It looks like she pulled on a Mickey Mouse tee and wrapped Grandma’s table runner around her waist. If this were an In or Out, I’d be absolutely shrieking OUT.

It’s pretty; I kind of like it.  I’d like it more if (a) the shoes were a different color, and (b) she weren’t doing her patented chest thrust.  Makes her look like a mom at Sunday School trying to let the hot new single guy at church know she’s available.

Well I can guarantee she wasn’t there for the chocolate.

    • MilaXX

Sure she’s fully clothed, but it’s not that great of a look. The hair is a bit too disheveled for the dress, I dislike the white underskirt or ruffle at the bottom and I think the dress needs a skinny belt.

Bitch, please.  Isn’t she another one who is basically famous for being famous?  Paris Hilton – Kim Kardashian – Blake Lively?  Is there a difference?

      • MilaXX

Actually she’s a step up since she does work for a living. She’s an actress on Gossip Girl and not just the special guest star one line cameos that Paris & Kim do.

        • Anonymous

Gossip Girl plus major parts in serveral movies, at least one of which she had to work pretty hard in, actingwise (The Town). Don’t you just hate defending someone like this, even if it’s just in service to those pesky facts?? I do it too and rather resent it every time. :)

          • MilaXX

yes, hate to defend her but she’s not famous for just being famous

    • Anonymous

Not that I *should* discourage such a step in the right direction, but it’s all too busy and sweet for me.  Though that is appropriate for the promotion, I guess.

    • Anonymous

It’s just wrong. Kiera Knightly maybe, or Emma Stone. But when you’ve chosen “slutty” as your image you can’t just step out in something like this and expect us to accept it.

    • Susan Crawford

I do want to understand this whole Blake Lively thing. I really do. But I just cant with her for some reason. She never looks quite . . . quite. There is always something that just misses – sometimes by an inch, sometimes by a mile. This Valentino dress is super, but on Blake, the whole thing seems . . . not quite. Someone pointed out to me that Blake is Sarah Jessica Parker 2.0. I guess I get that, but again, SJP actually seems to understand and work what she wears. But Blake? Not quite.

    • Anonymous

Aside from the hair, I think she looks pretty. The blue skirt just needs to be pulled down a bit. Clever idea, skirt over dress, I think it works here. White pumps with white clothing is just fine, it’s pretty much the only way you can wear them. The main issue I have is that this is way too Spring for this time of the year.

      • Anonymous

oh, is that what’s going on? i couldn’t figure out why a dress would look so lumpy.

        • Anonymous

Skirt over dress–I had no idea!  No wonder the fit is so wonky!

    • Anonymous

i lovvvvveeee her shoes!!! so classic and sexy. i wish the top was just a continuation of the skirt material, its so pretty and should be a full dress! dontcha think!? but i agree, wierd to see her in something more… “conservative”… her thighs must be so confused that they are touching material!!!

    • Anonymous

      you like this?

theres something about it that looks like a beautiful late 60s vintage t-shirt w/ macramé inserts on top & a bunch of tangled & slapdash-dyed ribbon on the bottom. maybe it’s the angle, or maybe it’s the strange high waist, i dont know.

    • Anonymous

I don’t really like this. When she’s not arching her back so hard she looks like the Gateway Arch, it makes her look thick-waisted, and I guess I just don’t dig the textiles involved. Too fussy. But that’s just me, and I agree it’s nice/crazy to see her all covered up for once.

    • Anonymous

Yet somehow it’s all just “meh”.

What I wouldn’t give to see a tap dancing cat!

    • Vaniljekjeks

It’s always the same complaint I have with her.  Below the neck: “middle aged WASP”, above the neck: “pretty girl at beach party”

    • Anonymous

I thought I might be the only one who didn’t like this!  And the more I look at it, the less I like it!  I wouldn’t even try this on . . . ok, I would b/c how often do I get into a Valentino, but still.

Kind of weird/interesting how the scroll-y lace applique at the bust mimics the cups of a lace bra that would show through.

    • Call me Bee

She does look chic, if not a bit…matronly?  IDK–not liking it so much…

    • Anonymous

imagine having such a flat stomach that you can literally pose sticking it out and still look like a stick. Just jealous and thinking out loud here…

    • http://twitter.com/madamesuggia Madame Suggia

I just can’t see the point to her…I mean, I’m sure she’s a good person, loves her cat and is kind to small children and all that, but I’ve never got that “ooh what a stylista” thing. Also that outfit is waaaay too matronly.

    • Anonymous

I don’t think these pieces should be worn together.   Individually, their pretty.   Since it’s February, I think pairing either the top or the skirt with black would have been a better (and much more chic) choice.

      • Anonymous

In complete agreement–about the skirt anyway.  Something black…something just a bit heavier…something less mid-summer. (This is what the now-ignored rule about white shoes was all about.)  Do not like the blouse? tee shirt? at all.  Big designer name, big designer price, but to me it looks like the pieces on the clearance rack that no one ever buys because they look so chip.

By the way, who is this woman?  I know, I know….  Off to Google.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HREPOWNBVUBRIVPQCF3ST2IKDM Euphory

      A taller Sarah Jessica Parker.

      • http://twitter.com/yankeefoxtrot Alex McGeagh

I think that gives her a bit too much credit, just sayin’…

    • http://www.facebook.com/charlotte.horseman Charlotte Horseman

I have never seen her act in anything, but I love her look.  And she looks great here – it’s the right outfit and look for the event.  I was an 80′s girl, so I will always love toussled(sp?)/beachy blond hair and the “new Goldie Hawn” look.  It’s sexy and I always wished I could look that way.

    • Anonymous

Her hair being a “mess” looks better then my hair does on it’s best day. I know others will disagree, but I think she’s really beautiful.

    • Anonymous

I’m not sure it’s actually tasteful.  It’s actually a pretty ugly outfit, it’s just tasteful because none of her anatomy is hanging out of it.  And she gets props for that.  But I really can’t get behind the buzz about her.  Clothes just wear her.  Or not, as is too often the case.

    • Judy_J

What’s with that blue over-skirt thing?  It just looks odd to me.

    • Anonymous

I want this dress. Also, what do we think she makes for these appearances?!

    • Anonymous

Not bad – bit a shocker to see her dress modestly. But her presence is sort of the anti-fierce, no? Everything she wears is rendered a bit banal.

    • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

Even with the messy hair she’s really pretty here. I don’t love what she’s wearing, but I don’t hate it either. Even the white shoes, which I think are pretty much always a mistake, work here. This might not be fabulous, but at least she doesn’t look like she works by the hour.

    • Anonymous

I think she looks quite fetching

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

It may be tasteful, but she sure does bring it down to mall-wear level. Respectable mall-wear, but still. Sorry. I never would have guessed it was Valentino.

There’s a hidden Mickey* on her chest, but otherwise she looks very pretty. Love the colors with her skin tone/hair color.

she looks like a down to earth girl, that’s her biggest asset, her clothes are secondary to her personality. she doesnt give off the plastic vibe other girls do.  i dont mind the outfit, seems a bit casual, but maybe that’s appropriate to the occasion. skirt’s nice.

Kara’s top looked too much like she’d gotten her fabric at a quilting store, plus the look just didn’t have any pop.  The pants were unflatteringly bad and yet totally Kara at the same time.  I wonder if she, like Jerrell, hasn’t learned much in the time away from PR.  This is a look she could have done Season 2 which was years and many fashion trends ago.  I’m not sure she does classic so much as she can’t seem to get out of her own way even in the two-day challenges.

Kenley’s dress was another great look although I’d have done something different with the pink pockets which are both in a bad spot and a bad shape.  I still think she needs a shout out from the judges because she’s been consistently good and I was never a Kenley fan before.

Mila’s is just Mila and it’s getting kind of repetitive.  It doesn’t matter what the challenge is; her stuff looks the same.  She is trapped in a very small black and color blocked box that she either can’t or doesn’t want to break out of.

NO NO THOSE BANGS NO THEY’RE SO AWFUL NOOOOOOOOOO!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Patrick-Cleary/1201575213 Patrick Cleary

I think Kenley and Mila both suffer a bit from being almost too “good,” in that their work is polished and looks a bit too “done” and is definitely more on the ready-to-wear side than a fashion show standpoint. If Michael Kors were a contestant on this show, he’d be pretty much suffering from the same thing, which is kind of a shame, because while Alexander McQueen is an undeniable genius and the runway shows are amazing, most women aren’t buying that every day.

    • vmcdanie

I know she was an asshole in her season, but I felt sorry for Kenley in the park. I think it’s both been enough years that I’m over it and I really unabashedly love her aesthetic. That dress isn’t my favorite but it’s quite likable.

Good grief, what is happening with Kara?

    • vmcdanie

I love Latrice and I’m so gratified the judges do too.

Lashawn-what the hell? You kicked your shoes off at the start of the LSFYL and then didn’t proceed to do a tumbling routine or some crazy shit? You really will get read by your drag mother.

I like his intensity.  This is the first time I saw him as a man :)

I like the idea of Kara’s but its too quiet, there’s no POW!

Kenley’s is terrific again, except the houndstooth panels, and I love houndstooth but not here, they kind of ruin it a tad. If the front looked similar, or the same as the back I’d probably think it was perfect.

Mila’s was my favorite look this week. Androgynous aspect of Kara’s but has runway flair. I could see this go straight from this runway and on a girl walking down the street. The pants are terrific!

    • BuffaloBarbara

I think Kenley’s combination would be more flattering if she just continued the yoke down a smidge, maybe a line or two, because from the side, it looks like it’s pulling up.  (Still not a fan of the pattern mixing as a thing, but if it’s there, I’ll try and treat it fairly.)

Mila’s looks like something you’d see on the street, to the point of thinking “I’ve seen that before somewhere.”

Please please PLEASE tell me that hair is for a role.

I agree with you TLo, how can someone so gorgeous do this to herself? Do you think she sold her brunette soul to the devil for fame and now she has to stay blonde?! There must be a contractual obligation somewhere, it just doesn’t make sense otherwise!

Oh gah. That hair.  The bangs are just as bad as the dye job.  And the back of that dress is terrible.

To add to my comments from yesterday. I’ve now seen the WTF episode and I’m sorry to say I’m still not overwhelmed. I almost feel that Ru herself is just phoning it in. The girls for me really don’t seem to have the style or skills from past seasons, or the Charisma or Uniqueness. We do seem to be getting more back stories earlier in the season, however. Also I’ve not yet seem one memorable face or personality. Is it just me?
Come on ladies, step it up!

I liked Mila’s best of the three and thought it was [more than] competitive with any in the top four or five, (including the winner). Same could be said of Kenley’s, though hers was less to my personal tastes.

Kara’s was less colorful and waaay more tasteful, but otherwise clocked in for me like Jerell’s: A representative, but not at all impressive, example of what they do.

But yes, the judges who awarded Mondo the win this week and Michael the win last week are looking for more color & pizazz than Mila serves up.

I dunno, lace upon lace upon lace…Must be my irrational hatred for poor Blake coming out again

Seriously, how do all of these people not know how to prop up a pair of boobs?  With those sizes, even some interfacing would probably do it.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Not necessarily.  If the seams are done properly, they shouldn’t be uncomfortable unless one is REALLY moving a ton.

Nope. She meant to have that hair, or whoever colors her hair did. I think it’s an attempt at ombre, but came out looking tie-dyed.

It strikes me as the kind of dress a lot of women would want to wear. Vertical stripes to make you seem skinnier with horizontal ones at the bust to make your boobs look bigger. XD

I am whiter than the Queen, and, as the late, great, and seriously missed George Carlin said (paraphrased) I don’t even try to get a tan. I just try to neutralize the blue.

I’m a cheapskate by nature, and all those years in the beauty business make it even harder for me to spend a lot of money on cosmetics and skin care, because I got almost everything wholesale. But my foundation just isn’t doing it for me anymore. I guess it’s time to shell out some money. All that to say, thank you for the tip.

but isn’t it also the most adorable smile ever?

It’s much younger than a lot of her stuff from her first season — which I think has been the case through most of the challenges.  It wasn’t so much that her earlier stuff read as “old”, it just seems like the newer ones would appeal to more young women.

I think the difference is: would you buy multiple pieces from the same line?  If you can put several outfits into a reasonably sized wardrobe without feeling it’s too repetitive, then it’s a signature look.  If you look at a designer’s collection and think, “I’d love one of those dresses” but would never consider more than one (except for a fantasy wardrobe — that doesn’t count:), then it’s repetitive.

At least, that’s how I always assess them.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I actually use that strategy for people ALL THE TIME.

Seems fair enough.  In which case, Mila’s not too repetitive.  She loves her geometrics and her black and whites, but there’s a lot going on in terms of the different pieces.

Oh well, I don’t think she’s getting the judge-love this season.  Too bad.  I actually think she’s one of the more original designers they’ve had over the years–but she’s hurt by her lack of interest in color. Something that wouldn’t be a problem in terms of actual sales, but does hurt her with the judges, I think.

How much time do you spend on your tumblr posts? I’ve been trying to get one off the ground but finding the time and putting out something that’s good is more than a little challenging. TLo make it looks so easy :-)

How do they wear on oily-ish skin?  My skin sucks in make-up — the only one I’ve ever found that actually lasts a decent time is Revlon (oddly enough, I know drugstore brands aren’t known for doing particularly great jobs.)

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I can beat that!  I tried to bleach mine at 18 and turned it 12 shades of orange — we counted.  And when I saw the orange, I decided I just hadn’t left it on long enough, so I let it sit longer… for 3 hours.  My stylist, when I went in to get it fixed, told me I was ridiculously lucky my hair is so strong and thick or it would have been breaking off and I would have had chemical burns all over my scalp.  Eeep!

And to top it all off, I did it on a Sunday… the night before I was supposed to start my first semester of college.  And the day before I was supposed to work… in customer service… for my third day ever…  REALLY bad timing.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

My stylist actually gave me a dark blonde/light brown (kind of a caramel color) as a base color and then heavy highlights so mine wouldn’t get so stark when it started to grow out.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

She probably can’t tan (nor do I agree she should — I like the fair skin).  People with that incredibly fair skin with a pink undertone generally can’t.

Like especially the assessment of Kors. [of course, because it reinforces my opinions].
