In or Out: Angelina Jolie in Ralph & Russo

Posted on February 15, 2012

We actually argued over whether or not to feature this look.

Angelina Jolie attends the Cinema for Peace Gala during the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival in Berlin in Ralph & Russo.

“I’m SO TIRED of talking about her and her effort-free styling choices,” whined Tom. “Shut up. We’re doing it. She looks fabulous here,” barked Lorenzo, all butch-like. Heading into our 16th year together, Tom knew it was pointless to argue when his voice gets the dictatorial bent to it. So, fine. She looks pretty good here; better than she normally does. Even though it’s yet another neutral, we like this dress quite a bit and it suits her to a T. Looks a bit wrinkled, but we imagine it doesn’t travel well if you’re sitting in a limo. The earrings are a nice touch and the hair and makeup look pretty. We really can’t find much to complain about here. It’s not quite setting us on fire, but it is a good look that works perfectly for her.

Hmph.

Vote Now!

IN! Oh, lighten up. She looks good.

OUT! I’m yawning again.

Voting on Gabrielle Union’s skintastic gown is still, like her skirt, open.

IN, even tho I’m yawning too.

    • Anonymous

Completely, totally IN. Great look for her.

      • Anonymous

I think she look FABULOUS. Of course I always want to see her putting in more effort, for all the usual reasons- stunning woman, imagine what she’d look like if she did, she’d conquer the world just by walking into the room, etc.- but seriously, this is so totally in the right direction. It’s, like, almost TIGHT, and it’s not black, and it even has a little detail at the waist. And she looks GORGEOUS (which is obviously SO difficult for her). IN.

        • Anonymous

I just wish she would gain weight. I don’t want her to break

    • Anonymous

      Lighten up. In.

      • http://twitter.com/TheRedZavodnik Ginger

Amen!  Is life so bad that she can’t manage a smile?

    • Anonymous

      Oh, in.

    • Anonymous

I’m sorry it’s a pretty generic dress.  The only things that make it exciting (by Ms. Jolie’s standards) are that it’s not black or loosey goosey.  And no, I’m not going to vote in just because Angelina is genetically superior to us mere mortals.

      OUT

      • Anonymous

Ooh, have to respectfully disagree about the “genetically superior” assessment.  I’ve tried,  watched several of her movies, and I don’t feel envious (too old).  She just freaks me out.

        • Anonymous

Agree!  She gives me the creeps – tried watching her movies but I just can’t make it through any of them.  It’s a case of one of those inexplicable “I can’t stand this woman” things.

    • Anonymous

IN.  She looks great.  At least it’s not black!

    • Anonymous

      Absolutely stunning! In.

    • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

Her legs look ENDLESS. Plus, defined waist! IN.

(It’s sort of sad that those are the criteria, no? Regardless: a little dull, but she still looks very good.)

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

Look at the height of those heels! No wonder her legs look endless. With heels that high, you can add many inches to the length of the dress.

        • Anonymous

How doe she walk in those heels???? Anyway, this dress has a lot more interest than the boring draped loose stuff she usually wears and I love grey. She looks super chic, especially since she put on makeup and brushed her hair. Not the most exciting look but definitely In.

        • Anonymous

She does look like ten feet tall in this picture. Now we know what it looks like when Christina Ricci’s get like ten feet taller method is applied to a person of regular height. Crazy awesome!

        • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Urban Gypsy aka Tess

I am dying to see those shoes. Doesn’t she normally pick the most bland shoes on earth? These have got to be killer.

          • Anonymous

But they look like silly putty pumps, no?

        • Anonymous

You must have seen other photos of her at this event……….I don’t see her feet at all in these photos.

          • Anonymous

You can see the heel of one of her shoes in the second picture. They’re very high.

            • Anonymous

Thanks, AnaRoW.  Now I see it.  High, indeed!  I live in Durham, NC and occasionally see one of Duke’s basketball players out and about in the community.  It’s always interesting to be next to someone and realize you are at eye level with his waist….must be almost the same feeling with her in those stilettos.

            • Anonymous

hey – I am in Durham too, and I almost never am lucky enough to be face-to-waist with a Blue Devil!  Where do you hang out?
Oh, to the point though:  Angelina is a big IN.  Beautiful, sexy but covered.  Lessons can be learned from her.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Inês-Martins/100000345906318 Inês Martins

IN! She looks great (soooo skinny though…)!

      • Anonymous

so skinny. She’s a striking woman, but she doesn’t look healthy.

        • Anonymous

Maybe it’s the way she’s holding her arms – but her hands look creepy.  CREEPY!

      • Ceur -

I was going to say ‘In, because she covered up the protruding bones.’ She looks horrible with bare shoulders at the moment. So, yes, in. Congratulations Angie, you won yourself a one year supply of buttery sandwiches!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CBJGITXG2PYJPHPGG7DUTNCQXA Erin

In.  Even though she looks like an awards-show statuette.

    • Anonymous

IN.  She’s trying to play the serious director role here, so the gray and the sleek silhouette make sense.  Is it thrilling?  No.  Does it need to be?  No.  I can’t find any fault here.

      • Anonymous

        What you said

    • Anonymous

I’d like it more if it were short, but IN nevertheless.

In…TAILORED, this is not an awards show but she is not wearing a caftan thank all that is holy.

    • http://twitter.com/BookcaseHat Emily

      In. She looks good.

    • http://opinionandamovie.blogspot.com/ Deitra S.

Ugh.  I can see both sides to this arguement.  It’s almost a color, but not quite.  And yes, she does look stunning, but it’s like she doesn’t even CARE.  Her make-up actually looks a lot better than it has lately: much more flattering and softer.  But I say she gets a Non-Participant ribbon.  She’s lovely, but neither in nor out; floating in the ether of uninspiring pretty.  Wake me if she wears one of those Monique Lhuillier dresses you featured earlier.  THAT will be worth seeing.

    • Addicted2Glamour

Not exactly a “stunning” gown, but at least it’s not black. And her hair looks fantastic. IN.

    • Anonymous

You guys are tired after a long crazy-busy week. Take it easy. But do write the Glee recap, for heaven’s sake, we need to know what you thought of Rachel’s dads.
Oh, Angelina’s dress? In, she looks great. It looks office-y, in that grey stripe, so I don’t know where another human would wear it, but it’s perfect for her.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

IN.  I like the look — yes, it’s a neutral, but it’s got some interesting details, and it’s a neutral that suits her.  Plus it fits her beautifully.  And I don’t mind the neutrals like many here; when you look like she does, you don’t really need a color to draw every eye in the room.

    • Anonymous

Love this! IN! And I’m not just saying that because she threatened to shank me with that wristbone, either.

    • Sara__B

The fit needs to be impeccable on a gown like this — understated and in a light color — and it’s not. She looks fine, neither in nor out. Quite ordinary, except for her extraordinary face.

    • Anonymous

Boring but In…but please eat something, Angie!!!

    • Scott Isaacs

In, but yes, *yawn.* She did nothing wrong here, but a little pop here and there would work wonders. Besides, she always comes across as an ice queen, so maybe it should come as no surprise that this works for her.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1077090078 Megan Sullivan

She looks much better than she normally does. In.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1253053236 Belle Burnett

I’ll say IN, because it’s not a black jersey/clingy fabric.
That little bit of heel that’s showing in the middle photo intrigues me, I wish we could see her shoes. Probably just a nude pump, but it’s crazy high.

      • Anonymous

        Yeah, right! Like insanely high.

      • Anonymous

        I smell putty, too.

      • Anonymous

That picture is actually hilarious; she looks like she’s standing in one giant shoe.

      • Anonymous

I saw the shoes on another blog. They are indeed nude patent platform pumps. I was loving this look until I got to the bottom of the photo. They almost ruined it for me. Truly, beige with grey? A black shoe would seem more logical and attractive. But she is too fantastic to get an “out” from me.

    • Anonymous

      She looks fabulous. IN.

    • Anonymous

      IN

    • Anonymous

IN, love her in a more tailored silhouette, very pretty. Color is whatever…

      • Anonymous

I agree.  I do also love this shape on her and seems like the shape alone is evidence of effort.

    • Anonymous

      In. But it’s too long.

    • Anonymous

In. It’s not a breakthrough for her or anything, but she looks, well, like THAT.

    • Michelle Nguyen

She looks like the sexiest novice nun EVER.

I’m torn – silhouette looks fabulous, but color is boring. >_< I guess a reluctant "In". But seriously reluctant.

    • Anonymous

She’s always striking, which I think is her problem. She can’t not look good, even in less than inspired choices. I think this is better than most on the interest level for her, but it’s the hair and make-up that really push it into striking territory. IN.

    • Anonymous

There’s sort of a glamorous sisterwife vibe going on here.

      • cluecat

Yes!!  I was thinking that  pre-liberated Nicky from Big Love would wear this to a social event, along with her Cowboy boots and maybe some lace trim.

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

Tired of her hair. Would have been nice if she sported a nice bracelet. At least it’s not black and draped and boring, though. IN

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Standard Jolie fare. She’s IN, of course, but color *really* wants to be her friend.

    • Daniel Hoerner

      IN by default.

    • Anonymous

I’m trying to imagine only now seeing her for the first time — instead of tired and toned down, would she appear breathtaking in this photo? I can’t tell anymore. (Already voted.)

    • Anonymous

The camera angles here do her no favors…she looks like a PEZ dispenser.  Great dress, not a fan of the messy hair.

    • http://twitter.com/ryenerman rynerman

In – the color is bleh, but the fit is perfect and she looks stylish.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=668425491 Daniela ‘Dani’ Weiss-Bronstein

In, but more color on her face with such a neutral dress would have made me happier. She’s beautiful as is, though.

    • http://theargiehome.blogspot.com/ Gus Casals

It’s not earth shattering, but she looks really good and not just by genetics. The sleeves cover her extremely thin arms, there is a detail in the fabric that you can see in the close up and hair and make up are no afterthoughts. IN

in where?  The vampire librarian’s club?  OUT

    • Anonymous

      A resounding meh.

    • Anonymous

In. The WOW factor may be missing, but the dress and styling flatter and nothing detracts. I love that lip color on her. She should consider it for everyday use too.

    • Anonymous

      totally IN

    • Anonymous

I mostly hate her. Like personally, even though I don’t know her personally. She’s just one of those people who make me cranky by virtue of their existence on this earth. So, you know, permanent OUT from me, especially if she’s wearing a wrinkled gray dress and a borg-like facial expression.

    • Noelle Haland

I find the Berlin-grey fabric a bit cheap-looking, but that might just be because of the wrinkles. I like the subtle vertical stripes and I like the cut of the dress, as well as the belt. Hair and makeup are lovely, and yay for earrings! Overall, I give it an IN, but it’s not setting me on fire or anything. This same dress in a different color might have done that.

    • Anonymous

Has to be an IN since it’s fabulously tailored & looks great on her figure, but it is a yawn.  Can someone please run in there & shove some red or hot pink or any color shoes on her?!

    • aimee_parrott

Well, it’s not black so I guess that’s better than what she usually wears.  Still, it’s pretty effing boring and I can’t really bring myself to say anything nice about it, so for me she’s OUT.

    • Anonymous

I was on a phone call and looked at this and forgot what I was saying.  Who cares if it’s neutral?  It’s striking and gorgeous and (to me) this is about as feminine as she’s looked in a long time.  This is so incredibly IN.

    • Anonymous

IN.  I mean, I hate that it’s gray, but I can’t deny it’s sharp or that she looks great in it.

    • Anonymous

IN, because somehow she brought the conservative director look while also making her boobs look ah-mazing.

    • Anonymous

It’s better than most of her choices because there is interest. The fabric is patterned or textured. The dress is fitted with detailing. Her hair looks “set” or “styled” instead of just “combed”. Like the earrings; would have liked a bracelet. She still looks unpleasant and slightly vacant. But In.

I’m just happy it actually fits rather than being another kaftan. I have no issue with her defaulting to neutral tones as long as the cuts and silhouettes are flattering to that (amazing) body. Totally IN.

In. I like that it is tailored but still feminine. Not super exciting, but still lovely.

    • http://shootingshoes.wordpress.com Amanda Gun

In, but only because she’s gorgeous. I do think the sleeve length makes her look slightly awkward, which actually adds to it in my opinion. It makes her seem slightly more like an actual human being.

I love this dress… it’s a beautiful and unusual choice. I happen to love gray. And even though it does, however, accentuate the alarmingly bobblehead-esque (ish?)-ness of her proportions, I’ll give her an IN.

I now understand the point of the caftans: they hide just how scarily thin she is.

Also, how sad is it that a shiny neutral modest gown has become synonymous with Angelina Jolie. It makes me sad, so OUT.

    • Anonymous

I have a question, and it’s more rhetorical than anything else, but here goes.  She’s there as a director, as I noted in an earlier comment, and obviously trying to show herself as a serious filmmaker, so she’s not going to wear thigh-baring Ungaro or feathery Marchesa.  While this blog features men regularly, I’ve never seen male directors like David Fincher get their own post, because nobody expects directors to really heat up the red carpet, even if it’s an actor/director like Affleck or Eastwood.  So while I’m not a huge Jolie fan, I find myself wondering if she’s kind of caught in a bit of a gray zone in terms of being a young(ish), beautiful woman who has to break into a position that Hollywood sees as being a man’s job.  How SHOULD she be dressing for this?

      • Anonymous

        In gray! haha.

Meh. Meh, meh, meh. Guess it’s an OUT for me. The first thought for me was ‘sister wife’. I don’t like the drab color on her, and the big shoulders make it look like she’s shrugging. Also, her arms are so long and thin that the sleeves look like they shrunk rather than  were constructed as 3/4 length sleeves. I realize she’s busy (no shit–with all those kiddies, directing, acting, and saving the world), but would color actually kill her? She’s so naturally stunning that’s it’s always a disappointment to me that she looks so meh most of the time. Obviously, she doesn’t give a shit about what the rest of us think, but just once I’d like to see her and think, “Hot damn, she looks great!”

In. Classy look without the severe hair she can sometimes wear.  I like it.

    • elzatelzabelz

Out- the dress is completely weird. Is she going to a formal business meeting? I wore that same dress to work the other day, only about 10 inches shorter. So, not appropriate for a Red Carpet. Also-YAWN.

    • elzatelzabelz

WWait- about 20 inches shorter. Geez, that’s long.

IN, she looks fantastic, head to toe.

    • Anonymous

In.  It’s enough of a departure from the usual gown to be in.

    • Anonymous

Very severe look. It suits her well.  Too tight across the ribcage though. I can’t imagine who it would fit, if it’s too small for her.

IN. She looks stunning. Sure, she played it uber-safe, but unlike 99% of what she wears, it is neither super-draped nor reveals skin in awkward ways. So yeah, safe color-wise, but other than that I think she really got out of her bubble.

    • Anonymous

Dude. I cannot stand this lady, but she looks AMAZING here.

Eh. IN, I guess. She looks great, but her face and figure are pulling most of the weight.

She looks fantastic. Girl, that’s your dress. I don’t care if it’s another neutral, it’s gorgeous. IN.

Meh. the color is just blah, as usual for her. I like the style and her hair and makeup look great. In..by a smidge.

    • Anonymous

I think that’s fabulous. She hasn’t looked that statuesque in ages. Her legs look like they go on forever, and I can’t even see them. In x 100.

    • Anonymous

Meh.  The overall shape is nice, the earrings are nice, the hair is nice, the color is bland and snooze-worthy.  I hate the neckline, though.  So, in a look that is bland overall, the fact I hate the neckline and that is the only strong feeling I had in this either way…

      OUT.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

I like it but don’t love it. Could use a little accessorizing. The cut of the top is not bad and it fits nicely around the waist, but the skirt should either be a little shorter or slightly embelished towards the bottom.

      Beautiful. IN!

At this point she doesn’t even have to show up. A cardboard cutout would be just as interesting. Out.

she looks great but she also looks like her implants are all thats standing between her & death. meaning: she’s just about ready to replace demi moore as the acting world spokesmodel for anorexia.

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

When I look at this, I think of PR season 2, when Iman said of Daniel Vosovic’s winning gown that it was a little bit boring, but “I will make it not boring.”

Iman would make this not boring. Angelina doesn’t. So I’m gonna have to go with OUT.

    • Anonymous

As a gown, it falls short of the fabulousity it would strut if it were a dress.

    • Anonymous

So she gets a pass because this is “better” than what she usually wears?  I think not….  Formal length office garb does not fashion make.  To quote Joanne Worley  (for all us oldtimers)  BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO_RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRING! (OUT)

    • http://twitter.com/ClairRose483 Clair Ellis

In. Great fit. Great hair. Great make-up. Skinny as a damn bean pole. Not black. I’m in fact not yawning b/c anyone who can manage to pull off a dress that is form fitting without looking form fitting is gonna get an IN from me.

    • AWStevens

Yahoo say it’s an in so I say it’s definitely OUT.

Sure, it shows off her curves but the color is all wrong for her.  She looks like the postmenopausal wicked witch from “Snow White”.

OUT.  I actually usually like her simple styling, because I think it works for her.  But that dress is dull as dishwater, and the same color as it.

    • Anonymous

Her breasts look fantastic!!!  Even covered up, the dress showcases those ta-tas…

    • Anonymous

I think she looks very good and it’s not black and loose.  It fits her very well and it’s interesting, even though it’s in a neutral color

    • Anonymous

Yawn indeed.  If this were knee-length it would look like an executive secretary dress.  Blah, bland, uninspiring, and boring.  OUT.

PS: so much for all the “pregnant with twins” headlines that assault me at the grocery checkout, too.  If she’s pregnant at all here, it only happened in the five minutes before the photo was taken.

She really does look like she’s gotten too damn skinny again.  She looks so much healthier – and beautiful – when she’s a little more filled out like she was in those horrid Lara Croft movies.

Oh, the dress….see, I’m so busy gazing at her skeleton in dismay, I didn’t even notice.

    • Anonymous

      Absolutely IN! She looks flawless.

    • Anonymous

I wish she’d change her look again. Get a haircut (pixie or chin-length), gain 20 pounds, wear color again – any and all of these. She’s so gorgeous but it’s just the same look over and over again.

She has a slightly odd body – it’s probably not as easy to dress as you might think.  I’m trying to remember – has she EVER worn a pattern or even something with more than one color?  Her choices always looks so…nunnish.

      • Anonymous

Years ago she wore a strappy cream silk dress with a pattern, around the
time of Mr & Mrs Smith, before the Relationship was acknowledged.  There
were some pics of her going up on stage to shake BP’s hand and she was

I have to say that Ms. Jolie usually leaves me flat – don’t care about her, don’t go to her movies…just a big old ‘meh’ here from Crash Central – however – she looks fab here. I love everything about this look. Everything. Not one thing would I change. There, that’s probably the last time I weigh in on anything Angelina Jolie. IN.

    • Anonymous

LOVE the dress but the mannequin could have looked a little more life-like.

    • Anonymous

I was all prepared to give her an out, but then I looked on the pics on my computer instead of my phone and I find myself thinking IN.

    • Anonymous

In, simply because seeing her in a dress with darts is such a novelty.

Plus, I really like the dress.

That said, she looks good-ish, but she’d look better if the dress were in a nice warm color to de-emphasize the hint of spectral death’s head I’m getting from the neck up.

I’m afraid that when she gets to the age (and really, she’s years too young to be thinking of it) at which putting on 10 pounds, or not, becomes a choice between “your ass or your neck” looking o.k., she’s going to make the wrong choice.

    • Anonymous

She looks lovely and appropriate. The dress is reserved which I would think is right for an event celebrating “Cinema for Peace” in Berlin in February.

    • http://twitter.com/7Valfi Fio

I am tired of the excuses other fashion critics says about Jolie’s style as effortless as well. I call it redundant and plain boring. If this dress would have had a pencil skirt, different colored belt, and a pair of red or shocking blue heels then I would have praised Angelina. I think she has an entire closet filled with yawning dresses from 1990 – 2080 titled an effortless closet.

    • Anonymous

Late to the show … Lovely dress and she has some beautiful wrists but she looks increasingly unreal with each passing year.  So, yeah, an IN for a lovely dress on her emaciated frame but, really, is she real or is she Memorex?  It seems clear that she’s got other folks doing the cooking at their house because no one dealing with that number of children and mealtime obligations looks this thin unless they are ill.

Lovely dress though and she looks good in it.

    • suzq

Methinks Lorenzo may have pulled a muscle trying to construct those compliments.  Save the kudos for something more stunning.

She gets a pass from me because she’s promoting a movie that she produced.  She doesn’t want to necessarily be the story, front and center.  I think she’s intentionally trying to play her look down.

    • Anonymous

I know it’s not the done thing to comment on the body rather than the apparel and adornments, but I am so mightily distracted by her disproportionate head and what look like crow claws sticking out of her sleeves that I can’t even begin to focus on the dress, hair, and makeup. She has a beautiful face and build, but she needs at least 10 more pounds on that rangy frame of hers.
