2012 Oscars Red Carpet – Part TWO

Posted on February 27, 2012

Line ’em up!

Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace

What the shit was she doing with her leg all night? Did she come down with a bout of crazy or something? Because usually Angie’s pretty demure when it comes to playing the sex card. That was just odd the way she kept sticking her leg out like that all night, especially when she did it on stage. Look at how far apart her feet are! She’s ready to squat down behind home plate!

The dress is fine, if a little big for her.

Cameron Diaz in Gucci Première

We were surprised by how much we liked this, given our constant bitching about neutrals on the RC and dresses that match the hair color. It’s very chic and clean-looking. And the bit of glitter in the skirt was a nice touch.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford

So we hear that classless people with vision problems are out on the internet voting this one of the worst looks of the night. Lucky for you, we have taste here at T Lo Taste, Inc., and we absolutely loved this for being dramatic as hell without being too attention-seeking. Quietly dramatic.

But the hair’s pretty bad, we have to admit. Love the cuff.

Judy Greer in Monique Lhuillier

Sharp as hell.

Kelly Osbourne in Badgley Mischka

We’ve always defended her but she’s really starting to get on our nerves lately, especially when she starts talking about fashion like she has decades of experience with it. And besides, no one with hair the color of potpourri burner water should be lecturing anyone about their style.

But the dress is nice.

Kelly Ripa

That’s one tightly wound spring. She looks like she could go off at any second. Look how everyone behind her is moving back. They can sense the danger.

Leslie Mann in Roberto Cavalli

Sharp and chic.

Maya Rudolph in Johanna Johnson

We didn’t like this at all onscreen but it looks a bit better here.

Melissa Leo in Reem Acra

We hate the sad little sash, but the dress itself is kinda chic. Just wish it was a little fitted.

Mellisa McCarthy in Marina Rinaldi

AWFUL. We realize that her size and shape make it ridiculously difficult to score free dresses for the red carpet, but we’ve seen her in so many disasters we’re ready to declare that her problem goes deeper: she really doesn’t know how to dress herself. Now, the basic shape here isn’t bad, but the color is horrible, the glittery trim looks tacky and the big flowy sleeves add volume.

We think she could solve so many problems for herself if she’d go the Gabby Sidibe route and decide that she doesn’t give a good flying fuck what the world thinks of her arms by opting for sleeveless dresses with wraps or dresses with little cap sleeves. Nothing is going to magically make her body smaller, so she’d be much better off by owning it rather than trying to cover it in extra fabric.

Milla Jovovich in Elie Saab

Knocked it out of the park. We’ve always loved her ability to go from zero to uber-glam so effortlessly.

Missi Pyle in Valentina Delfino

Fantastic color, but way over-designed.

Penelope Ann Miller in Badgley Mischka

Still needs that hair consult. P.A., let us get you started: lose the pale blonde hair and go for strawberry blonde. It’ll do wonders for you.

The dress is pretty. Not over-the-top chic but much, much better than a lot of what she’s worn through awards season.

Rose Byrne in Vivienne Westwood

This look seems to have been universally praised, but we thought it looked odd as hell. It’s tight across her boobs and drapey over her hips, which makes her bottom half look much wider than her top. Add that mushroom cap on top of her head and the shape becomes so weird that she almost looks like a semi-colon.

Sarah Hyland in Alberta Ferretti

This looked more romantic and ethereal onscreen than it does here. we thought the color looked pretty on her but it all looks like a sad prom dress in this picture.

Shailene Woodley in Valentino

This looked terrible onscreen last night but looks considerably less so here. We think this might be a dress for not moving at all. Once you move and speak, it starts looking awkward. Too many design elements on a dress that deceives you into thinking it’s simple. Interesting choice, though. We’ll give her that.

I loved Shailene Woodley in “The Descendants” and thought she deserved a nomination of her own, but damn.  When I saw her last night I just said “oh no.”  She’s wearing the hand-me-down of Glenn Close, if Glenn Close was a sister-wife.

    • Sweetbetty

It looked like something you’d wear to a winter formal here in the northeast back in the 60s.  Very warm and very aging.

    • ArchaicSmile

Agreed. The gown might have looked better if it were a halter top – the sleeves are just too much. But it probably would have still looked too old for her.

Actually, as I look at her and Penelope Ann Miller I’m thinking they should have switched dresses.

    • sockandaphone

havent seen the descendants yet but i cant believe shailene woodley of “the secret life of the american teenager” fame can actually act. Ill definitely gonna have to watch this film eventually

      • amywinns

She’s very good in it. Maybe the TV show doesn’t allow her range.

        • sockandaphone

have you seen the show? oh man the first 2 seasons were so tragic and hilarious. so much bad acting. but good for her for landing a good role!

      • alyce1213

She’s excellent in it, complex but understated.

    • I don’t think the dress was so bad, but it’s too mature for Shaliene, who tends to go that way. Would love to see Cate working this dress.

  • Did Angie not feel so fresh down there? She was airing it out all night.

Cameron looks like Dianna Argon’s “hip” “cool” aunt.

I feel so bad for Melissa…she just needs to find a designer who understands her shape and works with her exclusively like Octavia Spencer did.

Judy Greer looks perfect. Why is she not on my TV 24/7?

    • schadenfreudelicious

she really did appear to be having a Monostat moment….

      • Saoirse Lee

Not that it’s related, as such but there are rumours that she’s preggers again, hence the glow and happy head.

Perhaps this rumoured pregnancy is also giving her a vagocentric world view, hence the legz akimbo. ;P

        • homespunner

I’m gonna go with the posture being an inside joke between her and Brad. “Angie, hon, stick your leg way out everytime you’re on camera. It will be soooo funny.”

          • See–that would explain much.

          • siriuslover

what, the pregnancy or the inside joke? And if so, why didn’t he stick HIS leg out all night?

          • Peri7473

I don’t know if you are joking or not, but that is exactly the vibe that i did get from it.

          • If I were part of a celebrity power couple, there is absolutely no way I’d be able to resist these sorts of shenanigans.

          • Hahahaahaaa, that’s hilarious, but I think it would make more sense if she’d made the agreement with a three-year-old.

          • HapEPants

Totally agree. It was so obvious when she exaggerated the pose at the mic and then giggled. What fun!!

        • vmcdanie

It’s none of my business but she doesn’t appear to be a good place physically to be having a baby. I’m surprised she’d even be fertile. She looks like someone in the serious throes of an eating disorder to me.

          • janiemary

My thought too… not so noticable on the RC but when she was presenting her arms looked emaciated.  Maybe sticking her leg out was to keep people from checking out how thin the rest of her is!!

        • amywinns

Happy head? I thought her hair was depressed and suggested longterm malnourishment. Pretty makeup, but the hair has been so much more lush in the past.

          • Saoirse Lee

Sorry, happy head is an Irish colloquialism for someone who looks unusually and obviously, well, happy!

As in “Would ye look at the big happy head on Angie, you’d swear she’d had a go on Brad in the limo on the way over.”

    • JimMcC

I don’t know. I kind of dug that Angie was feeling frisky.  Totally silly, of course, but in a way that seemed like she was having fun with it.

I’m surprised to see nice things said about Melissa Leo’s dress. To me, it was the worst of the night.

And credit to the Paltrow. I may not like her so much, but she looked stunning last night.

      •  Me, too. Of course the thigh flashing was ridiculous, but Angie seemed to be in a really good mood, so I decided she and Brad were just enjoying a parents’ night out and she was going to go BIG with the sexytimes.

        • Maddie_Faddenoid

“Go big with the sexytimes”… love it. Going to have to use that seductive little phrase one day. “So… you me go big with the sexytimes?”

    • lifetime_student

As soon as I saw Melissa last night I said, “She needs to hire Olivia’s stylist.”

    •  Thank you for mentioning Octavia Spencer – who was wearing white and silver for goodness sake and looked fantastic. And she’s not exactly sylph-like. as a matter of fact, if Octavia wants to be very kind, she’ll slip Melissa the name and phone number right…this…minute because what Melissa Macarthy was wearing looked as close to a couch cover as I’ve ever seen.

  • Little_Olive

Shailene: All I could see is the tunic the Pope wars under the cape. :S

Melissa M: NO. In camera it was even worse. Those boobs look too heavy to be supported by tulle fabric within an inch of its life.

I just can’t get over how well Mila Jovovich looked, and I don’t usually like one-shoulder dresses. The makeup and hair were gorge.

Angelina’s was an insult. She must have ridden (is that the conjugation?) a motorcycle to the Oscars to explain that posture and that hair. Was your crotch on fire honey?

  • I disagree with some of your comments–I thought Melissa McCarthy looked great in the televised segments. The color lit up her skin and hair. Standing still, yeah, less good.

    • The cut is a crime — no one with that body shape should ever be put in such a dress.  For one thing, a waist set directly under your boobs should be worn by skinny women or pregnant women — larger ladies LOOK pregnant in it.

      •  My thought exactly.  Lose the sleeves and move the waist down about six inches and I think it would have looked fabulous on her.  The bodice draping could have been directed toward the middle to give the illusion of a waist and then the skirt draping flowing out from that center like they are attempting to do would be more complimentary to her figure.

I think she is a beautiful woman and it makes me sad that she ends up in these grandmother of the bride looks.

        • Lori

Yes. The high waist and the big sleeves made her look like a parade float and that is Not OK. I’ve been there, so I know. She really does need to find a good designer to work with. That person needs to know how to work with her shape and to help her see that more fabric is not always better.

        • SheWhoMustBeObeyed

As a plus-size girl myself, I *love* an empire waist. But when you put an empire waist with a gathered flowy skirt, you look pregnant. Cut the dress in an a-line on the bias so the fabric skims but does not hug the body. Lose the giant sleeves.

          • I think this speaks to the fact that shape of the figure matters.  And that even plus-size girls have different shapes.  Despite what designers think.

Octavia Spencer’s shape (X) is VERY different than Melissa McCarthy’s (O or H).

I have an X shape and would never be able to pull off an empire waist (and I’m trying to hide my envy that you can) because empire waist garments emphasize that I’ve got two bowling balls stuck to my chest.  An empire waist just stops the movement of the eye “right there” instead of down to my proportionally thinner waist and makes me look rounder and heavier than I already am.

I like your idea of an A-line cut on the bias!

          • MilaXX

Actually for Melissa’s shape I don’t like empire. I think dresses that wrap, with a bit of ruching are better for her. And A line when you are short, makes you look like a giant triangle and only emphasizes the parade float look. I’m 5’3″ and rarely go for A lines as a result.

      • TheOriginalLulu

Man, that dress was awful on her. She really needs to get Octavia to show her a thing or two about dressing a larger body.

        • tsid2012

She and Octavia have completely different bodies so I don”t think that is the answer for Melissa.  Octavia actually has a much smaller waist and can get that hourglass figure.  Melissa has what the women in my family have, a larger midsection that is a real problem to wrangle in.

          • Sweetbetty

We must be related because I have that figure too; small boobs, thick midsection, relatively smaller hips, that gives a barrel shaped figure.  Olivia probably weighs more than I do but I’d trade her shape for mine any day.  Melissa M. has in-proportion boobs but she’s not gonna get that hourglass shape.  However, she can do much better than this dress.

          • MilaXX

The do, but that ruching does wonder. I don’t think every dress Octavia wore would work on Melissa, but that Tashi she wore to the Oscars would. However, I suspect Melissa would never bare her arms.

      • MaryMitch

Agree. And all that extra fabric just adds volume.  Very common mistake that large women make.
I loved the color on her, though.

        • Adding so much roundness to her roundness only makes the situation worse. As someone shaped like her, I understand the challenge. As I’ve said before, set-in rather than dolman sleeves makes a definite difference as does a V neck. Add a tunic top over a slim skirt and she loses several sizes.

      • MilaXX

Keep meaning to mention, since leaving Glee Ashley Fink Has been quietly stepping up her fashion game.

    • MilaXX

That was a fat girl dress if ever I’ve seen one. It’s the wrong color, the wrong fabric & the wrong shape. As a big gal myself I have to say we need first and foremost structure and fabric with a bit of weight to it. I have no idea why Marina Rinaldi shopped not one, but two versions of that hideous dress. Sherrie Shepard’s is only slightly better, but at least she got the color and fabric correct.
The only dress Melissa has worn that truly worked for her was the David Meister

  • Baditude

I just have to say, thank you guys for all these posts so early in the morning! As someone who can’t even stay awake for the whole broadcast, I am impressed by your marathon of tweets followed by what looks to be a marathon of posts.

As for the dresses, my fave was Emma Stone’s, but I also loved how great Judy Greer looked.

  • I feel that the Jolie had that weird stance a night was for one of two reasons.
One: Because she’s ready to pop out another baby.
Two: She’s ready to take a dump right there. Prime taking-a-dump stance.

    • kentiesgirl

LMAO-just what I was thinking, ready to drop a kid at any second.

    • tsid2012

Considering how unbelievably thin she looks, skeletl actually, there is now way she is preggers enough to warrant that stance.

      • amywinns

Possibly the pointiest I’ve ever seen her.

  • miagain

Man alive… i thought Gwyneth Paltrow looked glorious.  I just loved the cape…

    • Cathy S

       Yes, just incredible.

    • Glammie

Yep, it bugs me to have come around to like Paltrow–but the outfit is great.  And she deserved her Glee Emmy.  Sigh.

    •  This was probably my favorite look – it’s completely simple, but gorgeous and tailored perfectly. And it’s a perfect match of woman and dress; I know a lot of people don’t like her, but I only require that she look pretty and she looked fab in this dress.

    • Sweetbetty

I didn’t see the broadcast of the show but I’m curious as to whether she kept the cape on during it.  It would seem awkward to sit in it but if she took it off what did she do with it?  Do they have a coat check room at the venue?  Or perhaps a personal assistant held it for her?

      • Adriana_Paula

When she presented with Robert Downey Jr. the cape was off.

    • SheWhoMustBeObeyed

I am not a Gwynnie fan. I tend to despise her with the red hot fire of a thousand suns. But she looked great.

    • MilaXX

I can’t stand her but I have to give her props. That was an awesome look.

  • Katia Alba

Angelina was trying too hard. Did you see the guy from “Community” who won best screenplay?? He was mocking her, ha!

    • twocee

I think we were posting at the same time.  Jim Rash cracked me up.

      • Katia Alba

hahaha yay, Jim Rash was fantastic, actually one of the best improvised things of the ceremony. By the way, when Angelina entered into the stage, one of my (male) friends screamed: that forehead!!!

        (sorry for my english)

    • Lori

Jim Rash was funny but watching her last night it seemed obvious was goofing around the whole time and a lot of photos from last night seem to back that up.

      • girliecue

Totally. Didn’t people she she was laughing when she stuck her leg out? I feel bad for Angelina that she’s getting hated on for this. She gets criticized all the time for being humorless, drab and not as sexy as she could be. The one time she is self-mocking and over-the-top sexy, she gets clawed to death. Girl can’t win for losing.

        • Sweetbetty

That’s just it; she’s known for a certain type of behavior so when she suddenly acts out of character people don’t know what to make of it.

    • butterflysunita

Angelina’s leg thing made me laugh even before I saw the Jim Rash imitation.  She looks ridiculous.

    • alyce1213

Yes, but he was going along with all the spoofing started by J-Lo and Cameron, picked up by Angelina.

      • melizer

Well, *there’s* a way to make sense of it!

  • Leonardo Alves

    Love Gwyneth’s dress!

  • twocee

Gwynnie and Milla for the wins last night.  Odd that they were both in white.  I thought Gwyneth looked sharp as hell, and I gasped when Milla walked on stage in that dress.

I adore Melissa McCarthy, but I do believe that was the least flattering dress I have ever seen on her.  At least she has gotten it right in the color department in the past, but that old-lady graypink is AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL.  If the designers won’t give her free gowns, surely at this point she has enough money to hire a stylist and BUY something that looks good on her.

Angie cracked me up.  Anyone else notice Jim Rash on-stage mocking her when they were accepting their award?

    • BayTampaBay

It was ROFLMFAO hilarious. All three winners of the writing award mocked her.

      • Spicytomato1

Her ridiculous pose was begging to be mocked but I was shocked that they did it right in front of her. Girlfriend could have clocked them with the spare statues that were no doubt handy.

        • girliecue

She was mocking herself. I am really surprised people don’t see that. Everyone had an open invitation to join in the fun. I wish the camera had panned to her. I’d bet good money she was laughing her ass off.

          • Spicytomato1

I don’t know why I didn’t see that. I guess because she’s usually so deadly serious about everything. And the whole tone of show was pretty uneven, with more than one joke falling kinda flat. Reminds me of the time in grade school when I tried to be flip and funny to a teacher who was known to be a jokester and she reprimanded me for being disrespectful. I was mortified at the misstep.

          • girliecue

I had the same sort of experience with a teacher in junior high. And I totally agree with you about the uneven tone of the show. It made viewing a little uncomfortable. I kept getting anxious about whether or not people would laugh – sometimes feeling bad when they didn’t and sometimes wondering why the person even tried that particular line or gag. It was almost like the presenters didn’t know what to say or do. Maybe a lack of direction? I don’t know. The Oscars desperately need an overhaul, that’s for sure.

    • Melissa needs to go back to whoever styled her on Gilmore Girls. On the rare occasion Sookie was dressed up, she looked fabulous.

I skipped part of the Oscars to watch The Walking Dead. And I missed Jim Rash? Gah!

    • Greg Yoder

Melissa McCarthy could commission a gown from Korto, who has always done a great job dressing larger women.

      • mskgb

I had the same thought. Although Marina Rinaldi is an exclusively plus-sized designer, gowns don’t seem to be her forte. The dress combines every awful piece of advice plus-sized women used to (and sometimes still) hear: cover your arms, hide your hips beneath excess fabric, create a waist because there’s no way you could really have one. Where’s the reality TV show where designers whisk someone like Melissa McCarthy off the red carpet, perform an intervention on her gown and release her to the cameras once more?

TLo’s comment re: “something deeper” affecting Melissa’s ability to dress well at RC events: I think she could score dresses, albeit not the selection her peers have access to. I think the issues may be her inability/discomfort with reconciling her persona with couture dress requirements and perhaps growing-up plus-sized baggage that tells a girl she can look “fine” or “slimmer” but never fantastic.

        • This is pretty much what I was thinking about this look.  As a big girl myself, I know how hard it can be to find something that will look amazing.  One other thing is the colour – darker is better.  Nice, defined lines don’t hurt, less floofy, but not TOO form fitting either.  Best dress I ever wore was actually a bridesmaid dress in a royal blue with spaghetti straps, empire waist, and a-line skirt.  Sometimes classic works.

  • sagecreek

I liked Kelly Ripa’s look, but why the heck is a minor TV soap/talkshow star showing up at the Oscars?

    • SewingSiren

Modeling borrowed gowns and jewels. The commercial aspect is almost comical these days.

    • pattyw

“Live With Kelly!” hosted the morning-after Oscars show that Oprah used to do. She was interviewing celebs backstage last night. BTW: On “Live” her dress looks more yellow and her skin looks more orange.

    • Judih1

I was wondering why Kelly Ripa was there too! Also Sarah Hyland the teen from Modern Family – why was she there. And even though JLO has not put out a decent movie in years, we know she was there for dramatic effect

    • Little_Olive

And would it have killed her to pack a pair of boobs?

      • rawrgrowlrawr

My flat chest is glaring at you right now. 😉

        • Little_Olive

Oh, nothing against flat chests. Just wear styles that suit your shape, especially in KR’s case where her tummy is so obsessively toned it’s lost all waist. As a 32D girl, lord knows it took me a while not to want to be almost flat, because I always found it more gracious. I cannot pull off a strapless to save my life.

    • Lori

For the same reason other talk show hosts were there:  because actors need to appear on these shows when they’re peddling a movie.

    • alyce1213

Girl has an eponymous (“Live with Kelly”, national, network show on TV every day for which she makes $20 mil a year and you call that MINOR?

      • sagecreek

I get your point. But she’s not A-List. That’s what I meant by minor. I happen to love her — I still remember Hayley Vaughn!

      • amywinns

Credit where it’s due. I’m not a fan, but it’s hard to argue with facts.

  • Nicole Runde
    •  That’s hilarious!

    • serenitynow02

It’s hysterically funny, yet at the same time, I feel almost embarrassed for her.

      • alyce1213

It is funny, as were J-Lo and Cameron when they hit their pose, but Angie’s leg is so skinny and sad looking, the humor was almost lost.

    • dress_up_doll

Thanks, Nicole! This is awesome! I saw it with my own eye’s last night, but didn’t get that they were mimicking her. This has made my day.

    • Oh, thank you. I missed that part last night.

    • Anathema_Device

Oh that’s what Dean Pelton (guy from Community…forget his real name) was doing on stage! We couldn’t figure it out. Hilarious.

    • Anathema_Device

Oh that’s what Dean Pelton (guy from Community…forget his real name) was doing on stage! We couldn’t figure it out. Hilarious.

      • alyce1213

Okay, first J-Lo and Cameron spoofed the “look-back-over-your-shoulder” pose, then Angelina spoofed the “leg-out-of-a-slit” pose (for which she is famous, but worldly enough to know that it’s an expected “pose”), then Dean Pelton spoofed her.
It was all meant to be funny.
        And it was.

        • Anathema_Device

Went right over my head. So, it wasn’t funny to me.

    • Anathema_Device

If you can stand one more…Dowager Countess-gelina.

  • BazoDee

I do not like Cameron Diaz’s dress – It looks like shredded pantyhose!

Jolie better stick to pretending like she’s not trying! Gwynneth looks like the storm trooper queen. George Lucas could look into casting her for that role.

    • Stormtrooper Gwenyth is all I can see now.

      • Terrie_S

For me, my immediate thought was “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope.”

    • Don’t give Lucas any more ideas for re-editing the Star Wars movies! Great. Now he’s going to put in a digital Stormtrooper Queen. Maybe she’ll shoot first.

    • Absolutely accurate. To me it looked like she was emerging from a pod in Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance video, and then she shed her cocoon by the ceremony and became a beautiful, colorless butterfly.

Also, she needs to have a discussion with her colorist. Her hair’s such a cool blonde that it looked almost green on my TV last night, and it’s not much better on my computer screen.

  • jblaked

Oh, Angie, you do look amazing, but you really do need an intervention.  You look like you are about to break in two.  How someone so skinny can have such a youthful, healthy glow must be a testament to a great makeup artist.  And your stance has become the new planking.  I found myself doing it online at Starbucks this morning…

    • Spicytomato1

I’d love to hear a name for this new move, lol! The most ironic thing is that the leg that she seemed to eager to showcase was a little frightening to me…Waxy, bony and twiglike.

Gwyneth, on the other hand, could have rocked a slit like that.

    • mstzilla

Other photos of Angelina’s face and body really make it look like she’s quite ill.

  • Saoirse Lee

Think Gwinnie looked outstanding (as is obligatory when complimenting her, I must also mention that she ordinarily gets on my tits somewhat). Never has a dress so suited someone’s physique, stature and colouring. The haters could say that she looks somewhat like a PR consultant for the Jedi council, but I say nay.

    • Did I miss a memo about looking like one is related to the Jedi Order in some fashion being a BAD THING?  ‘Cause it really only makes me like it more.  (Though I’d say the dress is more Imperial in nature — too many angles to be Jedi:)

      • This is one of the many reasons I think you’re awesome.

      • Saoirse Lee

I would regard retro-futuristic fashion (encompassing imagined costumes of a Jedi order nature) to be a very good thing, but these foul haters of GwinnieGoop’s ensemble have not our taste.

As PR for the Jedi Council, she must be careful to present a sharp, professional image and eschew outfits of a baggy, hessian Jedi style as that would only reinforce the prejudices of those whos opinions she wishes to sway.

  • DinaSews

The scary thing about Melissa McCarthy is that she is going to start her own clothing line.  Not knowing how to dress yourself is one thing, but thinking you know what you are doing (and looking like this) is just downright scary.

    •  I know!  I couldn’t believe what I was hearing!  And I still can’t figure out why the hell she didn’t just wear Tadashi Shoji and call it a day.

  • crackineggs

I can’t believe people are hating on Gwyneth’s look.  I thought she looked fabulous.  Love the cape.

  • laughingacademy

I like everything about Gwyneth’s dress except for how it makes her breasts look crooked.

  • I was mad at Melissa’s dress last night. It’s clear that she and Octavia have (or had) similar body types, so why didn’t the former go right to Tadashi Shoji? Octavia wore the designer for pretty much the whole season and knocked it out of the park; I think Melissa could have done it too if she’d gone with a Shoji instead of that hot mess.

    • Agreed!!  E! had Mellisa McCarthy’s stylist on.  He was quite proud of himself for her look.  Celeb’s – steer clear of that guy, because everything – the color, the fit, the stylying were all bad.  So so bad.

      • alyce1213

Really?  He showed his face in public?  Some people are so deluded.

        • Spicytomato1

I saw that interview, too, and he even went so far as to say that styling her for last night was akin to having a baby with her because they created the look together. Talk about deluded!

    • elmhurstgal

I think Melissa is a lot heavier than Octavia, but if not, it shows the benefits of wearing something that fits your shape well! Octavia looked great, Melissa not so great…..

    •  Yes!  Everything you said!

    • mskgb

They don’t have similar body types, although I think Spencer’s dress would have looked good on McCarthy. Octavia Spencer has an hourglass shape and fairly square shoulders while Melissa McCarthy is pear-shaped, with sloping shoulders. It will be interesting to see what McCarthy plans to do with her own clothing line: http://www.shefinds.com/2011/bridesmaids-melissa-mccarthy-is-working-on-a-plus-size-clothing-line/.

  • cam_lo

Hard core disagree on Rose Byrne. I thought she looked amazing and I loved her hair. Also Mila Jovovich is a goddess.

    • Last night was the first time I’ve seen Rose Byrne in anything other than a still photo. She looks a gazillion times better in action. I thought she looked really great on stage, but here, she looks boring as usual, and in need of a hair intervention.

  • Colleen Robinson

As someone who can’t stand Gwenyth Paltrow, she looked pretty amazing. I don’t get the hate for that dress either.

  • Alisa Rivera

I hated Gwyneth’s cape when I saw it last night, but it looks pretty cool in the still photo. The dress itself was gorgeous.

  • Angelina has become a caricature of herself. When she was presenting, I couldn’t take my eyes off her stick arms. EESH!

Melissa McCarthy – what can she do? I relate because I’m a large woman. People who compare her to Octavia, I would venture to say there are 50 -75 lbs difference, and Octavia is shaped different. The volume of fabric was not her friend, but the color didn’t bother me.

I was really surprised at how much criticism others were giving Gwyneth this morning. When she arrived last night everyone was gasping. I thought it was beautiful. Her hair looked bad, tho.

Mila was perfection head to toe.

    • Little_Olive

Yup, good dress, wrong wrong hair. And dare I say her face looked too tanned.

    • I’m a big girl, too, but I’ll tell you what she can do:  wear something a helluva lot more fitted, that’s what.  I don’t care how big you are, those awful muumuu gowns she’s been parading around in make me sad and mad.  I don’t remember Gabby Sidibe looking bad, and she’s larger than Melissa McCarthy.

      • That’s what I mean about the volume of fabric. It was like someone saying “lets gather as much fabric together as we can to cover all this up” It accentuates after a point. Gabby Sidibe is a much better comparison than Octavia.

  • SewingSiren

I thought Shailene Woodley in Valentino was the 2nd best look of the night. Rose Byrne and Mila Jovovich are also very good. Angelina Jolie wins the stupidest pose award. Awkward. And Melissa McCarthy by far, the ugliest dress. By god those “sleeves” look like they were tacked on at the last minute by a nervous stylist who had no idea.

  • Pants_are_a_must

The reason Goop is being chowed down is the cape. That stupid, stupid cape. Girl is NO Streisand.

  • Jessica Kyler

    GP looked INCREDIBLE.

  • halleygee

Milla Jovovich looks amazing, best dressed so far. And I agree with you on Gwyneth’s dress (and the hair).

  • My problem with neutrals is when they are too close to the skin colour. That neutral is nothing like Cammy’s skin, so it looks lovely. Re Melissa McCarthy, I remember an episode of What Not To Wear that showed pretty clearly that a strapless dress is often better for a sonsy lass than sleeves, because it plays up the delectable curves.

  • serenitynow02

All I could think was that Angie had a stuck gas.

I detest Gwyn Paltrow but I adore that dress she is wearing and she looks lovely. I found the RC pretty dull, on the whole. I hate Cameron Diaz’ dress because it looks like the color of my mother’s old girdle.

    • SewingSiren

I took me a second to figure “stuck gas?” Jeezz. I can not. Stop . Laughing…..

      • serenitynow02

I was going to be more blunt, but I had a sudden ladylike qualm. It will soon pass. (Unlike Angie’s gas.)

        • sagecreek

Oh, please, Angelina never passes gas.

          • serenitynow02

Precisely. Therein lies the weird stance.

          • Oh my God, you’re cracking me right the hell up.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Say what you want about Rose Byrne (and I have wasted many an internet word on her awful, awful dress sense), but she managed to hide a vodka mini bottle in that dress. I have RESPECT for that.

  • pattyw

Every other woman managed to brave the “cold” in their strapless and sleeveless gowns, but Gwynnie needs a cape? Annoying. I have been obsessed with Shailene Woodley’s Valentino dress since I saw it in Fashion Week photos. It’s a stunner, but not for her.

    Angelina: Private(s) joke?

    • homespunner

Private joke – only explanation. That or the gas thing mentioned above.

    • alyce1213

Angelina’s joke was not private, especially since it was preceded by J-Lo and Cameron hitting the look-back-over-your- shoulder RC pose.  They are all expected to produce these poses on the RC, and they were all spoofing it on stage.

  • Scarlet39

Angelina seemed desperate for attention.  It was uncomfortable to watch.

I have an almost irrational dislike of Gwenyth Paltrow, but I did adore the dress and the cape.  So chic and understated andit was accessorized perfectly.

    • dress_up_doll

Agree with you on all points. Imagine what stunts AJ will be doing at awards ceremonies once she’s no longer relevant.

GP’s cape and gown were magnificent. I can’t think of any other actress who could have pulled it off as well as she did.

  • kentiesgirl

Kelly Osbourne: agree & agree, but gotta say those embellishments and cut outs make for one of the most flattering dresses I’ve seen on her-although the colors are not to my taste. But what color goes with used potpourri water (lol) anyway?
    LIVING for Cameron Diaz. Perfect.
I don’t get Gwynnie dress hate; can’t see sitting in it but damn, pretty unforgettable and chic as heck. I would dial down on the draping(?) across the bust though, there’s a bit too much, like it’s almost unintentional.

    • I think a fair amount of the hatred for Gwyneth’s dress is a by-product of the hatred for Gwyneth. Not all, of course (thus “fair amount”), but there’s a boatload of people who hate her with a hot flaming passion. (I’m guilty of it when it comes to Demi Moore. I can’t stand her and think she always looks ridiculous.)

      • kentiesgirl

Good point. My personal irrational anger monster is Gisele ‘I know more about being a mother than any human in the history of the universe’ Bundchen. But now that someone brought up “Queen Gwyneth” and “Storm Trooper” I can’t un-see it. The helmet shaped hair is not helping. Sad cause my love for the dress is declining every time I look at it now. 🙁

  • I think, Angie’s right leg was afraid to stay in the dark, under the velvet. So it constantly was finding the way to the light. Poor cowardly thing. Angie’s left leg was her pillar, her bravery and all, and held till the end.

  • mjude

i have to give it to gweny, thought she looked smashing!

  • nosniveling

Gwinnie was striking – one of my favs.

  • Lilithcat

Angie is doing that because the Atelier Versace people said, “Make sure everyone knows that dress has a slit up the skirt.”

What is that weird sheer piece across Kelly Ripa’s belly button?

I thought Paltrow’s was one of the best looks on last night’s red carpet.

    • Little_Olive

Is that sheer? I saw it reddish. Like the dress was made by Nautica.

  • Ragging on Angelina was the favorite activity of my Oscar watching group.  Milla wins my vote for best dressed, although Gwyneth is a close second.  And you don’t know how much it pains me to say that.

I hated Cameron’s dress.  *Hated* it.  And I hate her hair, too.

    • Little_Olive

Finally someone who hated Cammie’s post-beach thing. We know you can surf, girl. We don’t need it on RCs.

  • Carla_Charlton

Lots of dresses really did look better moving on the television than in still photographs.  For instance, Michelle William’s dress had beautiful movement.  As much as I don’t like Gwyneth’s persona, she looked amazing.  Angelina’s stance was very peculiar — it almost makes me think that someone told her to look a little more sexy and this is her attempt.  And maybe I’m lame, but I thought it was a little mean and petty to make fun of her on stage — just let it go!

    •  For someone who has been widely regarded as “sexy” for many years, I don’t think she would “try”.  She knows she’s hot.  I think she’s either doing it tongue-in-cheek and trying to be funny, or was high.  It almost seems she had a bit of pre-motherhood self returned.

      • RebeccaKW

I agree.  I think she was doing it tongue-in-cheek.  Her face on stage when she first struck the pose-that’s what made me think maybe she and Brad had an inside joke or something.

        • alyce1213

Yes, it was tongue-in-cheek, and a follow-up to J-Lo and Cameron striking their RC pose earlier.

  • The dress on Melissa McCarthy made me think of a barmaid from any Masterpiece classic series (watching Lark Rise to Candleford right now and the Dawn French character, Caroline, comes to mind tho’ she isn’t a barmaid).

  • bluefish

Milla!  Lovely … The Angelina leg pose thing is bizarre.  Wonder if she’s trying to remind us that she’s still the Alpha SexPot & Glamour Aviator.  The whole thing just screams of massive insecurity.  I wanted to be able to see her Blood and Honey film and don’t mind subtitles at all but the story is so horribly depressing that I’m really just afraid to.  When a lot of folks feel the same way, movies tend to tank.  Wonder if it’s getting her down and so cue the old leg routine  I saw that Bernard Henri Levy wrote a piece in support of the film for Huffington.  I sense desperation.  Also, red red lipstick that intense is not her friend.

    • emily mcginnis

that lipstick made her teeth look yellow.

  • Marty1112

Poor Melissa McCarthy.  Draping your plus-size body in tons of blah chiffon does nothing for you.  I agree she should have gone to Tadashi Shoji.  Didn’t Badgley Mischka make a beautiful plus-size dress for someone?

    •  No, Badgley Mischka made that hideous thing she wore to the Globes.

  • sid123

Ugh have to say it Gwin looked very pretty, but it seemed she was dressing as though she was a royalty, not that Gwin would EVER think of herself like that….

    • sagecreek

May I buy you a cup of coffee? Nicely done!

    • Spicytomato1

I can’t imagine an actual royal wearing that cape or really any cape unless it was a a coronation or something. Somehow it seems too flashy for the likes of Cathy Cambridge.

  • Eva_baby

I am sorry but Angie looked haggard.  Her arms were like sticks and the dress seemed huge on her or maybe it was because it looked like it has a bustle.  I also kept wondering if ‘leg thrust’ was included  as a requirement for wearing the dress? I loved that Jim Rash mocked that because it was just so random.

I thought Gwennie looked great.  it pains me to say that, though.

  • Watching their presentation segment, Cameron Diaz’s dress looked like it was about to get in a fight with Jennifer Lopez’s. Battle of skin-shade nudes! She’s cute, gosh they looked odd together on stage.

  • Anathema_Device

I liked Woodley’s. She is one of those young women that dresses a little old for her age, but I thought this was a pretty chic dress. Jovovich was probably my favorite of the night. I absolutely love that dress on her. Agree with you on Paltrow. I didn’t know people were hating on that look. I thought it was very cool.

I disagree with you on Leo’s. I think it looks awful on her. Not sure it would look good on anyone.

I think Diaz’s works because it is peachy and not too close to her skin tone.

And laughing at your Jolie comments. I noticed the leg think during her stage time. Weird.

    • alyce1213

Not weird, it was meant to be funny.

  • Absolutely love Gwyneth’s look — are people really saying it’s one of the worst of the night?!?

    • alyce1213

I don’t get it.  It was gorgeous and memorable.

  • Mariah J

I thought Mellisa McCarthy looked soft and pretty. Great hair and makeup. I don’t really see how sleeveless would have helped anything.

Other top looks: Milla Jovovich, Maya Rudolph, Leslie Mann, and Cameron Diaz
I like Gwen and Kelly Osborne’s dresses but they ruin it from the neck up.

  • Gwyneth was one of the best dressed of the night. Say what you will about Goop but she brings the drama. This time she was bringing it all the way from a galaxy far far away, but that only makes it  more awesome in my humble opinion.

I thought Rose Byrne’s dress looked really pretty on tv but you’re right about the draping around the hips and I really don’t like those shoes.

I can’t even talk about Angie, what the hell was she doing? At least it made for a hilarious moment on stage with the Descendants writers.

  • Judy_J

I’m not a big fan of Cameron Diaz, but I thought she looked gorgeous last night.  Loved that dress on her.  And Kelly O is getting on my nerves, too.  I think being on Fashion Police has gone to her head.  Did Angelina Jolie have some work done on her leg?  She kept sticking it out and wanting it to be noticed.  Very awkward.

  • nancylee61

I am classless and tasteless – I hated Paltrow’s 19 century nurses outfit. As someone on the NY Times live discussion board said last night, all she needed was a nurses’ cap. And I know we are not supposed to discuss that elephant in the room, but Jolie, in pictures, looks like she is dangerously near dying from weight loss. Her arms and waist are that of a young child.

  • janetjb

Gwyneth: I think this is just about perfect for her.
    Judy: So sleek and confident.
Maya: Gorgeous color on her, pretty and different.
Mellisa: Lose the sleeves, spread out the bodice and up the color.
Mila: One of my favorites she looks like a “Movie Star”.

  • I sort of wondered if Angelina was trying to be funny?  It is so unlike her to pose like that.  Can’t stand her though, so the bashing doesn’t bother me!  haha

  • TxMom2011

I kept thinking Angie and her leg were making a joke and I wasnt getting it.  wtf    Kelly Osborne and that hair are killing me… just awful.  Milla Jovovich looked high…. mustve smoked a doobie in the limo.

    • alyce1213

Angie WAS making a joke, as did J-Lo and Cameron.  You seem to have gotten it, unlike so many people here.  They were goofing on the typical RC poses.

  • RzYoung

I think Milla’s was the best of the white dresses, she can really bring it.

  • VioletFem

Gwyneth’s dress was not the worst of the night at all. In fact it was one of the prettiest (along with Octavia and Milla). I think some people’s annoyance with her is coloring their opinion of her dress. But the hair was awful.

  • homespunner

Melissa Leo looked beautiful when she was presenting – chest up. Gorgeous understated make-up. Lovely hair. Milla’s makeup (at least on my tv) looked severe. Shoulder pad was a wee big. If she was going for glamorous actress of a bygone era, she hit the nail on the head.

  • If there’s anything that could make me believe in a higher power, it’s Gwyneth Paltrow in that dress.

  • Sweetvegan

After seeing these, I still think Ellie Kemper’s look won the night!

  • Claudia Fernandes

Rose Byrne on TV looked fierce and distinct. In the photo…not so much…
    Miss Tilda Switon…so much….

  • Angie is usually so glum on the RC and last night she was lit up like a Christmas tree with happiness and then to be so cruelly and so justifiably mocked by the twitterverse, it’s embarassing for her. But man, oh, man, what was Angie thinking?

    •  Exactly. She seemed genuinely happy to be there, and you could see her smiling and laughing throughout the ceremony, which was a nice change of pace. And then the leg thing just ruined it. It never occurred to me, but I hope some people are right that it was a joke and she knew how silly she looked.

  • Who’s saying Gwynneth is out? WTF? She looks like class on a stick.
And so do Judy and Leslie.
And liked Shailene and Rose for being interesting.
And if purple hair doesn’t go with couture Kelli! It’s like when you see the tennagers on the subway in t-shirts and cut-offs and lots of make-up. Doesn’t work.

  • Loved Cameron Diaz: she wore best neutral that I have seen on the RC for awhile.

  • Leslie Mann is close to perfection as it gets.

  • GorgeousThings

Gwynneth looked the best I’ve ever seen her. Watching E last night, one of the stylists they had on said she tried to get Stacy Keebler’s dress for Leslie Mann, but it had been spoken for. You had Hollywood bitches fighting for the dress YOU pegged, TLo!!!

  • Rose, Penelope, Mila, Judy, Cameran and  Leslie are stuninng.  Especially Mila and Cameron.
Gwyn was also gorgeous, but her ponytail needed to be closer to her head.
When The Hubs saw Melissa Leo, he said she was wearing a cute dress over a sparkly bowling shirt.  I agree.

Angelina was so annoying with that stance all night–on stage even, where it looked just plain silly.  I really wonder who talked her into doing that.  And the black velvet looked just dowdy–that’s what made the dress look so big–absorbed all the light.  I roared when one of the Oscar winners did the same stance in his tux.  Take that!

Melissa McCarthy’s dress was a mess.  Too much going on, wrong color and bad “sleeves”.  She actually looked better in that bathrobe she was wearing during her bit with Billy Crystal.  I agree she needs to just own her size and dress like she means it.  I hope she took some lessons from Octavia last night.

Random thought–I was surprized about the lack of necklaces last night. Or even statement earrings. All the jewelry seemed to be understated and elegant. Actually on the verge of boring–except for Gyn’s cuff, which was fab!

    • SRQkitten

I saw that Oscar winner doing the Angie stance and LOL’d, too funny!

And yes, Melissa should have a word or two with Octavia who knocked it outta the park last night with her dress. Lovely and flattering.

I thought GP’s look was fab – she seems to do better with the simple designs and last nights look was wonderful.

  • I agree about Melissa MCCarthy. If she’d left the sleeves off, it would have been a much better dress.

  • histrogeek

Gweneth’s dress was striking, even interesting, though I felt like she needed a spear and owl to complete the effect. This isn’t to say worst dress list at all, just easily mocked.

    • Good lord, don’t give her any ideas. Next thing we know, she will show up somewhere with a spear and an owl, without a hint of irony. (I say that with some love. I know she’s ridiculous, but I just can’t hate her.)

  • minnye

The white gowns were my favorite (including the Shalene Woodley Valentino)… as well as that incredible navy strapless number.  Lots of great dresses this year.

  • Re:  Melissa McCarthy “she doesn’t give a good flying fuck what the world thinks of her arms by
opting for sleeveless dresses with wraps or dresses with little cap
sleeves. Nothing is going to magically make her body smaller, so she’d
be much better off by owning it rather than trying to cover it in extra
    fabric.”  Word.

Did you hear her say on the red carpet that she’s going to be designing a clothing line?  And that she actually has a background in fashion design?  Yikes.

    • alyce1213

      No, it can’t be.

  • luluransom

I thought Gwyneth looked so chic. She’s getting panned for it, but I just love it, with and without the cape.

  • ChristinaRi

Oh, I could write for ages about all those dresses, but really I loved Paltrow and Diaz the best.

Kelly Osbourne should not be saying anything about fashion if she chooses to show up like that to the Oscars.

Angie — You could have looked so great but for that silly leg posing.   *weeps*

Tom and Lorenzo get the Oscar for working ever so hard during this red carpet/fashion week/project runway season.    Love and kisses and cuddles to you for giving your all to your kittens and unborn fawns.

Please take off for some tropical isle just as soon as you can for some R&R.

  • bellesprit

I really think Angie’s consistent leg exhibit was some kind of private joke or dare. Really. She’s usually been so reserved & elegant on the Red Carpet. Some fun that we’re not privy to was obviously, um, afoot.

    • alyce1213

I believe it was she was continuing the joke J-Lo and Cameron started when they struck their pose.

      • Pennymac

But she was doing outside on the RC, too.

        • alyce1213

Yes, she’s “required” to, and I think she was goofing on it.

  • Stefanos Mantyla

    ; for Rose Byrne is right! In fact, the Greeks use the ; as their question mark, which makes it perfectly fitting for this look, no;

Gwynie made a strong start with me, but Mila rounded up and took my number one at the end of the race.

  • I am not going to bust on Kelly Osborne for her hair color, seeing as how I did some cray-ass things to my own hair when I was young. But girl needs to learn how to coordinate her colors. Lavender hair and matte pink lipstick do not look ironic. They just look bad. On the other hand, she looks smashing in that dress.

For once, Cameron looks fantastic. I was stunned.

I don’t love the jeweled cap sleeves on Maya’s dress, but, overall, I think she looks great. I really love that dress on her.

Judy Greer – holy cats, she looks fab.

Missi Pyle looks a mess. That is one seriously ugly dress.

    Milla wins this round.

  • siriuslover

As everyone here knows, I hate Gwynny, but I thought she looked great (and her little skit with RDJ was kinda funny).  However, it WAS funny to read on another site that she looked like a high priestess of some weird cult. I’m not a small woman, so I don’t like it when celebs like Melissa McCarthy dress like they shopped at Fashion Bug in the early 1990s. Big women don’t have to wear tents. We’ve seen lots and lots of great examples this year alone. And Angelina’s leg…sheesh…That ranks up there with Billy Bob Blood and making out with brothers. She’s an odd duck, I don’t care how “sexy” she is, her crazy brings it down a notch or seven.

  • bellesprit

In one RC interview, I heard Mellisa McCarthy say that she’s working on a clothing line. I could hear fashion conscious women of size all over the world gasp in horror.

  • Jecca2244

I wonder if Angie throwing her leg out was a result of the dress being too big…Gwen looked great. Definitely will be one of those that people talk about for years to come. but i wonder if part of the look is more that she is in such good shape than that it was an awesome, awesome dress.

  • Rose Byrne as a semi-colon really cracked me up…because it’s so true!

  • Jennifer Coleman

Angelina’s little frog leg and bony knee just made me sad. Was there something in a contract that required her to keep flashing it?
Because Cameron’s complexion was totally in sync with that dress, it worked.
I really liked Gwyneth’s dress (and that cuff, GAWD!) and that’s saying something because I cannot stand her persona.
Judy Greer was perfection. In the top 3 for me.
Maya Rudolph does not dress her shape well. She has a good sized bust/broadish shoulders and the high neck/fussy waist/embellished sleeves is not a good look for her.
I liked the concept of Melissa Leo’s dress, but in the end, it’s a blinged-out housedress.
Melissa McCarthy looked better in that pink robe and sparkly pumps in the skit w/Billy Crystal than she did in that horrible dress.
I liked Rose Byrne’s dress, but when she walked onstage, it had funky hem issues. Plus, she needs to gain 30 pounds for that blunt cut to work on her.
I’m convinced Penelope Ann Miller’s hair dye is leaching the youth out of her. I swear she’s aged 25 years since award season started.
I rarely am disappointed with Milla J’s RC choices.
I have a little thing for monastic gowns, so Shailene’s frock didn’t bother me at all.

    • A commenter in the Oscars Part I post said that Tina Fey doesn’t serve fashion (couture?) well. I think the same can be said of Maya. It seems some of our current funny women have a complicated relationship with fashion and Hollywood’s beauty standards. I think Maya is gorgeous and Tina is about as sexy as any woman can be (I would actually consider switching sides for her), but neither fits into those standards. It’s hard enough to be a woman in comedy. Now they have to be glamorous too, which probably seems silly to them. I imagine it’s a balancing act for them.

All that babbling to say I think Maya did really well here. I agree with you about the fussiness and the embellishments, but this is the best I’ve seen her. And dammit, I love that dress.

  • Sara__B

Is Maya Rudolph wearing her dress backwards? the back is all sparkles, like the sleeves, and has a scoop neck. Odd.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Angelina’s dress would’ve been fine if they would’ve just made the skirt as a plain old skirt and gotten rid of the waist-high slit altogether. The slit and weird leg ruin it. Leslie Mann, Cameron Diaz and The Gwyneth look fine, but for me, Judy Greer and Milla Jovovich win this group. Both look fabulous.

Kelly Osbourne is a little Mae West-ish, which is odd and very wrong; I hate camp shirts and Melissa Leo’s looks like a fancy camp shirt dress; Missy Pyle looks like she’s been lassoed at the knee to be dragged away; Penelope Ann Miller’s dress made her tummy look fat on camera last night; Kelly Ripa looks like a bandage about to snap; Rose Byrne looks fantastic from the neck up, but the drape on her dress is just plain weird; and for me, Sarah Hyland’s dress needed to be simpler to fit her age. Shailene Woodley gets points for not showing up in the glittery bath towel or prom dress her compatriots seem to love, but her gown struck me as something that would look sensational on Faye Dunaway or Uma Thurman or some other tall, dramatic blonde. It doesn’t seem like the right match for a kid like Shailene Woodley, though.

And Melissa McCarthy… Sigh… This looks like her Lawrence-Welk-ish character on SNL, or like some kindly old lady character in a children’s book who wears a straw hat and carries a basket with eggs in it and is excited to show her pie at the county fair. In that dress.

  • thank you! im glad someone finally said something about Angelina. Why is she standing like that?! all night too, her legs were so far apart it was ridiculous! I wish you guys were commenting on E! news so we could get some real feedback and not all the ass kissing Guliana does. Oh and i loved Gwenyth dress!!!

  • Kimbolina

Count me as one of the people with an irrational dislike of Gwyneth.  But her dress was awesome.  But… I HATED the cape.  It was perfect without it.  With it, nooooo.

  • NasserShaheen

Jolie’s leg thing was a desperate ‘look at me!’. Lady, we’re all forced to look at you and your scruffy boyfriend already, so sticking your skeletal leg in our faces is practically assault. Her hair is pretty though and without the stupid leg/pooping pose thing she looked lovely.

  • vmcdanie

Dude what the hell was Angelina Jolie doing last night? So strange. And those person or persons in the audience howled and I was like, “For the love of Christ, don’t encourage it.” Also, she really REALLY looks unhealthy.

Did Penelope Ann Miller recently have some eye work done do you reckon? That odd face she’s making in that picture is the same one she made on stage. She really does nothing for me.

I love the color of Missy Pyle’s dress so much (and love it on her) that I’m going to give everything else a pass.

I think Rose Byrne looks beautiful here.

I like Gwynneth’s hair. I do not like Kelly Osbourne’s hair and her new inexplicable career as fashion snark has made me really dislike her, which I wouldn’t have thought possible.

  • Stefanie Mackenzie

Gwyneth was absolutely drop dead and drop your drawers fabulous. It is so beautifully retro. I kept thinking the only thing she needs is a butterfly on the cape somewhere a la “Now, Voyager.” She needs nothing.

Melissa McCarthy was a mess. She has looked a lot better. Whoever is influencing her fashion needs to be kicked to the curb, immediately.

  • nannypoo

Gwyneth looked great with the cape, except for the awful hair, but without the cape the dress had odd little shoulder pads that I didn’t like at all. Sara Hyland made a strange little commentator on E. She’s adorable, but really, who cares what she thinks about anyone’s clothes? Rose Byrne is trying to do that Kiera Knightly face-suck thing and they both need to stop. Poor, desperate Angelina Jolie has surpassed herself for self-involvement and made herself look like a fool all at the same time. And I hated her dress.

    • Sarah Hyland was on Fashion Police a few months ago, and made hilarious fun of Lea Michele and how she poses on the red carpet. So, while I get your point, she can make all the fashion commentary she wants to. 🙂

      • nannypoo

I wish I could have seen that. No one is more irritating than Lea Michele.

        • Judy_J

I saw that episode, and Sarah Hyland had Lea Michele’s posing down pat.  It was hysterical.

        • It was so funny. Hyland got a load of crap for it from Lea’s fans, but she really nailed it. Joan River absolutely loved it, of course. She also thinks no one is more irritating than Lea Michele.

  • Stefanie Mackenzie

At first look I thought Shailene was wearing St. John knit. I thought “Honey, only older women on cruises wear that stuff. Why you? Did you borrow it from your granny or an auntie?”

  • alyce1213

I do believe (hope) that Angelina stuck her leg out on stage with IRONY, à la J-Lo and Cameron when they hit the back-view-look-over-the-shoulder pose.
I mean, she’s too worldly to have done it for any other reason, right?  (I’m not fan of hers, and could comment about the hideous skinniness of that leg and the tattoos, but . . .)

Gwynnie’s dress and cape made me gasp, in a very good way.  I give her top honors; it was memorable.

Milla Jovovich’s dress was beautiful, but she so annoyed me when she took the stage with a slow, deliberate, diva walk like she was Deborah Fucking Kerr or something, which she ain’t.

I’d love to see Shailene Woodley’s beautiful dress on Jane Fonda. Shailene remarked that of all her red carpet outfits this year, this one was most like her, what she felt most comfortable in.  I think she must be a very old soul.  BTW I really like her.

I want to like Kelly O (hate her hair), but, like you, I get outraged when she tries to sound like she’s been doing this for decades.  I’ve heard her say, with a whole lot of ‘tude, “I don’t follow trends, I start them,” which is a whole lot of hubris.  That’s for other people to say about you, but only if it’s true.

Bravo to Leslie Mann and Judy Greer for nailing it.

    • SewingSiren

If the leg was a joke, then Angie deserves the Academy Award for comedy. Because I am still laughing about that stuck gas..

  • The reason I love you guys?  Two of the looks I loved last night, Jane Seymour and Judy Greer, are on the “Who was worst dressed?” list on another site.  I come here and see you agree with me. You guys have a much better grasp of fashion because, while you make a living from this, you are real people first.

  • TheOtherChristina

Oh, Melissa McCarthy. Whatever are we going to do with you?

I seem to be alone in liking the color. But the shape is atrocious, the fabric looks cheap, and the trim is just embarrassing. She also needs to give the empire waist a break. It’s not exactly on trend, for one thing. I would love to see her in something that’s fitted to the natural waistline.

Her hair and makeup are pretty, though.

And she has a background in fashion? Oy.

    • colleenjanel

I’m roughly Melissa’s size and shape, and I can testify that drawing attention to the natural waistline is NOT flattering on a girl with a large belly.

      • TheOtherChristina

She seems pear-shaped to me. Regardless, I don’t agree with your opinion.

  • lrhoff

Gwyneth looks stunning — killer sleek look.

  • Leslie Mann and Camron Diaz looked great, and I really liked the uniqueness and simple aspects of Gwyneth’s dress.  Hands down, though,  the winner for me was Judy Greer. I gasped when I saw her.  Never could have predicted that one!

  • SpcilK

Thank you TLO for the Gwyneth comment. I agree, she is serving up Hi- Fashion all over the place in her avant garde frock. The lines, construction and simplicity are EVERYTHING!

  • lilibetp

Thank you for NOT showing a closeup of Penelope Ann Miller.  I saw one last night and her throat looked about 100 years old.  I’m hoping it had something to do with the fit of the dress…

  • FinnieB

Gwyneth looks fab in her dress BUT don’t you think it’s a bit Pricess Leia at the end of Star Wars? Slap a silver belt on her and she could be giving away medals to Han and Luke.

  • This is the funniest photoshop of Angelina Jolie’s legs!!!!  http://i39.tinypic.com/sfula0.jpg

    • sweatpantalternative

      Hahahahahahahahahaha thank you for that.

    • Pennymac

      OMG, Snort!

  • MoHub

Kelly Ripa’s looks like a tennnis dress cut to gown length. What is that fabric anyhoo?

  • lucasuk82

I usually don’t like assymetrical gowns or white gowns, and yet both Milla and Gwyenth look fantastic.  Missi and Penelope have both been in the industry for a long time without recognition; I see their clumsy choices like fumbling on the phone when the boy you’ve liked for months finally calls.

  • BuffaloBarbara

Angelina: Maybe the leg thing is because she realizes the matte black isn’t going ot show up very well on camera without breaking it up somehow?

Gwynnie: Looks like she’s being pulled sideways–probably just the camera angle and a moment’s shifting, because the dress is amazing, but in this picture, it looks like the cuff is dragging her down into the carpet.

    Judy Greer: Love that.

Kelly Osbourne: I love the dress, but I will not give her an in until she does something about that hair color.  I don’t have much against odd colors, but this one isn’t remotely flattering.  If you want a weird color, how about a nice midnight blue?

Kelly Ripa: I’m with you guys.  I won’t comment on ther dress.  I am scared of what she might do to me.

Mellisa McCarthy: She needs to talk to Octavia Spencer’s stylist.

Rose Byrne: How is she walking?  Her feet are bound together?

    Milla Jovovich: Completely amazing dress.

  • Loved, loved Gywneth’s. She had an aura of Jackie Kennedy in Cassini with that graceful cape.  Just loved it.

  • Spicytomato1

My thought upon I seeing her was that I think Gwyneth’s ensemble is going to go down as one of the greats in the pantheon of “iconic Oscar looks.”

  • Maddie_Faddenoid

I’m sure Angie did it for a dare. Like maybe she lost a bet with one of her kids.

    • Pennymac

She did have an “inside joke face” while she was doing it, didn’t she?

    • Laylalola

I don’t know. To me it looked more like a woman newly re-sexually charged (usually by the prospect of — or the actual pursuit of — a new love interest) with that, you know, fresh flush and the slightly crazy behavior.

  • I thought Gwen’s was fantastic, and would have loved to seen it without the cape.  Melissa McCarthy’s was as bad as it gets. I felt awful for her.  I think even taking all that shit off her arms and making it a darker color would have been an improvement.

  • I love Mellisa McCarthy but that dress was terrible on her.  It did nothing to show her curves and only made her look wider.

  • MyBigKitty

Shailene Woodley  – no like.  Looks like a fleece dress.

  • kimmeister

I hated Melissa Leo’s dress.  Looks like a long bowling shirt with sequins.

  • carpediva

It pains me to say it because, well, I “loathe” her personally: but I did the gay gasp of the night when I saw Gwyneth on the RC; that Tom Form with cape is SLAMMIN’ GLAM-UH.  And at first I thought she’d cut her hair as well, and it was just perfect. Less so from the back and side once you saw the sad ponytail, and less so onstage without the cape, but I thought this was pretty much the look of the night.

VERY close second goes to Milla J, who looked effortlessly, flawlessly like Hollywood royalty. Which is funny, cuz, well… Resident Evil, and all. But just GORGEOUS from head to toe.

  • Gwyneth looks STUNNING. LOVED that dress.
WTF with Angelina? Such an odd attitude and SO awkward on stage. Just really bizarre. She’s kind of blown the “I don’t care about fashion and all you looking at me I’m just doing my job so I can get back to the refugees” thing.

Penelope Anne Miller – when she walked, you could see the line of the spanx = MAJOR FAIL. I don’t think she looked that great.

LOVED Cameron Diaz’s dress, hated the hair. Worst haircut ever.

  • Pennymac

Angelinas’ leg made me laugh. Especially when the fellows who won the award she presented mocked her by standing that way on stage.

Gwynneth looked amazing in that Tom Ford, but I wear my hair like that when I work in the garden.

Mellisas’ dress was most unfortunate; the color of unbaked pumpkin pie and made her “girls look like awful appendages. She should have consulted with Octavia. Her skit with Billy Crystal in his dressing room was hysterical, though.

    • that was awesome, with that guy imitating her. Best moment of the night, IMO

  • Zippypie

I think Ms. GOOP looks stunning.  The dress without the cape was so incredibly elegant on screen, where as I thought Milla, though gorgeous, looked too bridal and some of the other white dresses out there were just meh.  Including that of Shailene Woodley who had boob ventilation and it was SO long – hem that sucker!

Angelina looks insane and desperate, which is ridiculous.  She’s Angelina, she’s gorgeous – what’s her worry that she has to start acting like a hooker on Sunset.  Gah!

I just can’t get on the Cameron Diaz train EVER.

  • I agree with the Kelly O write up; plus she always interrupts the others on the panel. Its so constant I had to mute those segments a lot last night! Shut the hell up and let the others speak – ya might learn something!

  • I am sorry but all can think when I see Gwyneth is Edna Mode yelling “No capes!”

  • AnnPopovic

Angie and Brad were probably stoned out of their gourds. Wouldn’t YOU be, if you were getting out for a night, away from six kids?

And oh little Ms. Ozzie, that’s My Little Pony hair…it’s gotta GO.

If you look over at the Huff’s call on the dresses you get crack-comments. I knew I’d find reason if I came over here. Still can’t stand Gwennie but that dress really was classy and sublime.

Missi Pyle’s on the “best of the night” lists??? Seriously? I thought she was a walking advert for the tacky series GCBs coming soon to replace the Housewives. Yikes.

And yay for Maya Rudolph. She looked pretty and comfortable and if I were gonna have dinner with any of those people it’d be her; I bet she’s hilarious in person, and we’d snicker bubblie out our noses more than once …

  • SVLynn

I have to laugh at your comment re Angelina, because I was wondering too if she smoked a fattie in the limo or something. She did it a bunch on the redcarpet and on stage too.

  • brora

Paltrow looks great – she’s recaptured her Grace Kelly moments of which she used to have so many.

  • Judy_J

Angelina’s leg gets the attention it deserves.

    • Qitkat

So funny, it got its own twitter account.

  • fringebenefit

Here in this living room, everybody was screaming “What are you DOING Angelina?” In order to stick her leg out like that she had to walk and stand in such peculiar positions. It was impossible to tell what the dress looked like and how it really fit. And she kept thrusting her leg out in this obnoxious, defiant “YOUR SEX GODDESS HAS ARRIVED!” kind of way that was not only baffling, it had the opposite effect. The winner of the award she announced even tried to mimic what she was doing, it was so damned bizarre. Across the Internet, I’ve seen newspapers note that as one of the weirdest moments of the Oscar ceremony. We just kept saying, What are you doing…and why?!

    Paltrow GORGEOUS. Just gorgeous.

    • alyce1213

It was to SPOOF the leg-out-of-slit pose actresses are “required” to strike, as was J-Lo and Cameron’s pose earlier in the evening.
The writer who won “got it” and struck the pose to carry the joke further.

  • Emmyllou

Agree with you: Gwyneth = gorgeous.

  • unbornfawn

Had I seen Angelina pose as she usually does, and not contort herself to show her leg, I think I would have really liked this dress and be posting about how awesome it was that she took a step away from the drapey goddess things she always wears. Unfortunately, she looked awkward the entire night. Her reading of the nominees was just awful because she was concentrating on getting and keeping that leg out of its holster. Worst moment of the night.  Otherwise lots of generic pretty on the red carpet.

    • 3boysful

Have to say I was so proud of fellow Charlottean Jim Rash– who won for adapted screenplay “The Descendants”–when he got onstage and promptly posed just like Angelina!  In his tux.  Cracked me up!  Tho she looked none too pleased, and I doubt she or Brad will ever be in a movie that he is attached to . . . .

      • unbornfawn

        Loved that too!

  • frances rossi

I think Maya Rudolf shouldn’t wear belts – she doesn’t have enough of a waist to warrant. She has a pretty terrific rack so a lower neckline would’ve been better. OK color but not so good on the dress.

  • Lol @ classless people with vision problems! I have to agree with you though; no matter what you think of her as a woman/mother/actress, that dress is amazing and beautiful.

  • Lilak

Leslie Mann & Judy Greer V V nice!

Oh Rose Byrne . . . TLo nailed the ways that gown went wrong — too bad, ’cause it coulda been a contender.  On the other hand, the uber-bangs didn’t bother me as much as usual, on account of (a) tucking her hair behind one ear and (b) Ellie Kemper was in the room.

So-o-o freakin’ tired of Cameron Diaz.  After this year’s ad libbing (barking), no need for her to be on that stage ever again.  Is the pool of available talent so shallow that this over-aged Valley Girl keeps making the cut?  (As for the gown: Not bad, just unremarkable.)

I’m no big fan of Paltrow, but I have to give it her this time: She and Tom Ford sleekness are one awesome duo.  She looked like the queen of a planet in an Ursula K. Le Guin galaxy.

  • leilah

Angelina looks as if she can’t take herself seriously in so much dress, w/o Brad to lean against; 3 or 4 years ago she would have OWNED it.
Cameron looked beautiful — unusually soft…almost ethereal.
Gwyneth was stunning in that gown and cape and cuff — like a style-super hero.   Even in the color is beautiful on her, particularly since she seems to have spent 10-15 minutes in the sun (tanning bed?!?).  I saw the comments/worst-dressed claims flying around — those freaks are insane!
    Judy Greer:  Fabulous.
Kelly Osbourne:  “…hair the color of potpourri burner water” — !!!!  You guys should get a Pulitzer for poetry!
Maya Rudolph:  (Sigh) I can’t say anything bad about Minnie Ripperton’s daughter (‘tho she looks a lot better in the picture above than she did on the screen)….
Melissa, hon, wear three-quarter sleeves that are just about 1/2″ wider than your arm (3/4″ w/unyielding fabric).
Rose Byrne:  “….mushroom cap on top of her head and the shape becomes so weird that she almost looks like a semi-colon.”  ROTFLMMFAO!!!!  (breathe)

  • momato

I don’t get some of the commenters, here. It was pretty clear that Angelina was joking around, having some fun with the leg bit.

    • alyce1213

I know!  It was so obviously a spoof on the “required” leg-out-of-slit pose, taking off from J-Lo’s and Cameron’s earlier look-back-over-the-shoulder pose.  And capped off by the writer who struck it too.

  • Any time Gwyneth’s name is mentioned on the intarwebs people automatically start hating (I’m not a fan but I can appreciate good style). Me likes the ensemble.

Again, I don’t know half the people on the list.  I must not be keeping up with the latest celebrities.

[“So we hear that classless people with vision problems are out on the internet voting this one of the worst looks of the night.”]

In regard to Ms. Paltrow, I would put it down to good old-fashion Gwyneth bashing.  It’s very popular, these days.

  • AllisonRae

Ugh. Angelina and the leg were so annoying…I understand it on the red carpet when she’s posing, but when she was presenting, it was so odd. She took a second to pose and then started talking…who does that? I’m glad that guy immitated her haha. And she is TOO THIN, she looks like a lollipop…she has a huge head and little twig arms.

Judy Greer looks fantastic!!! I also loved Milla Jovovich, she looked beautiful and the dress was stunning.

    • alyce1213

Um, Angelina herself was spoofing the “required” pose.  As did J-Lo and Cameron earlier in the evening.  And the writer, being funny, got it and trumped them all.

      • CPK1

Really? Did Angelina actually say she was spoofing? I never got that goofy humor vibe from her before. I am curious. I actually really like her as an actress and humanitarian, and think she is beautiful but to me she just looked ridiculous

        • alyce1213

One does not announce when one is spoofing something, one just does it and that’s what makes it funny.
Did you miss Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz striking their pose?
Angelina is not what you’d call a comedienne, but she’s quite worldly, probably has a sense of humor, and struck that pose with intention.  And it was funny.

          • AllisonRae

I guess I missed something, what’s the “required” pose? I thought Jennifer and Cameron turned around cus of the nipple haha

          • Laylalola

Then why the heck are you so damn serious about defending it? She bombed with viewers.

          • alyce1213

I’m supposed to make damn joke?  I just explained.
It didn’t bomb with any viewers that I watched with, we all laughed along.  And it created the biggest internet meme in years.

          • julnyes

This viewer’s household found it hilarious as well. I have no idea why she did it, but it cracked me up. Maybe one of her kids was lecturing her on the proper way to show off the dress and it became a family joke played out on TV.

            Whatever reason, I vote FUNNY!

      • kimberlini

He trumped it all because we were in on the joke…we’d already seen Angie do it.  But it was an inside joke when Angie did it which is why it bombed for her.

  • julnyes

My hatred for Goop Paltrow burns with the fire of a thousand suns and even I have to admit the annoying twit looked fantastic.

    • Yes, she annoys me to no end too, but she really pulled it together. One of the best looks of the night.

  • Angelina looks like she’s hiding one or more of her children underneath her skirt.

Gwyneth looks like Little White Riding Hood.

Kelly Osbourne looks like she’s wearing a backpack.  Dislike.

  • ri_dic

I do not for one minute think that Angie was “spoofing.” Having said that, she looked good in that dress.
Also- that cape was not too much? Disagree. She looked great in the dress, but the cape was too much. Too Gwyneth, which is always too much.

  • BeeBeauNYC

Gwyneth looks amazing, but the pony tail was not thought out. Can I just say the Oscar fashion reviews are my Christmas morning on TLo? I am always excited for every Oscars post you guys do! Please do 100 more! (Just kidding. Well, only kinda.)

  • Violina23

What I love about Mila’s dress is that it was striking, white, but in NO way bridal.

I will always have a soft spot for Melissa McCarthy because I watched Gilmore Girls to the BITTER END, but wow. She can do so much better! She needs to have a chat with Octavia about what is flattering on a larger woman. Pools of fabric loosely draped is NOT.
Rose Bryne looks like she can kill me with her eyes. I’m kinda scared of her…

  • Thathoodwink

    Gwyneth needs earrings.

    • kimberlini

She also needed lipstick and a hairdo that didn’t reveal the extensions.

  • ccm800

I LOVE Gwyneth’s FRIGGIN cape! I think she looks so damn chic.

  • Thundar99

Rose Byrne is giving it the full Get Smart/Agent 99/Mata Hari treatment and I love it!

  • thebitterkitten

Mila’s dress is definitely on my best dress list…and I would imagine Gwyneth’s is too! Cameron’s dress is totally not offending me at all!!  But Rose Byrne’s dress looks almost cheap to me. In fact my husband was watching from the kitchen and was like is she wearing trash bags?

  • melizer

Ah, thank you, TLo, THANK YOU.  Your comments about Kelly Osbourne were like a soothing salve to my soul, and may have given me the strength to tolerate the impending Fashion Police or even watch the E! RedCarpet I TiVoed.

  • Lisa

I was crazy about the way Milla J. looked – fantastic!

I was so bummed at Melissa McCarthy – I’ve seen her looking amazing, and as a bigger girl myself, I know it’s harder for certain sizes.  But for god sake, I’ve seen her looking chic and glamorous in Allure magazine, so she couldn’t have borrowed the gays from there?  This was just so sad, it just looked like a tent.  And as a result, it made her look bigger than she actually is, which is a problem we bigger girls have to be careful of.

I’ll also defend Gwynnie up and down – LOVED that look on her last night!

  • kmk05

…Um, guys? Doesn’t Missi Pyle look like RPDR’s William? Or is it just me? Also, Sarah Hyland’s dress is wrinkled. No no no, please!

  • Rose Byrne is SCARY skinny.

  • formerlyAnon

If Paltrow had died her hair a nice, rich, interesting chestnut, I think that could’ve been called a WERQ.

On the whole, a good lot. That Jolie girl, on the other hand – ???? Did she get into the cocktails for the first time since the last birth?

There’s something weirdly positive going on between Ms. Osbourne’s hair and that dress. Which, considering what each looks like, bespeaks genius on someone’s part: stylist, hairdresser or Ms. Osbourne, I dunnno.

Kelly Ripa is one of my irrational celebrity hates (though if massive irritation, re-encountered at intervals over years & years, engenders hate how is that irrational, really?) So of course I concur.  I expect her biographers to reveal she was mostly heavily medicated and frequently menaced her children. So, o.k. Maybe I am over the ‘irrational’ line.

  • TieDye64

Wow, I missed Judy Greer onscreen. She looks amazing! As does Mila. LOVE. And I’m totally with you guys. Gwynnie looked fabulous. Perfectly suits her.

What was Angelina smoking? Did Brad promise to cut an inch off his hair every time she thrust her leg out? If so, I hope he likes going bald.

  • quiltrx

Milla is my vote for look of the night, and hubby agrees!  She’s equally at home looking tough or looking glamorous…not an easy feat!

SO glad you guys gave Judy her props!  She’s worn some troubling stuff this award season, but she really looked fantastic here.

  • loverungay

I couldn’t believe that Penelope Cruz didn’t make every best dressed list – she was our choice of look of the night!  Loved Gwyneth too.  Did not think Angie looked as stunning as other RC events.

  • Presumptuous Insect

I like Cameron’s haircut. It flatters her face more than long hair.

  • mila_8

I cheered to see Cameron overcame her disastrous haircut. Gwyneth, Federation Senator for Star Command.

  • I’m just as annoyed by Gwyneth as 99% of the interweb, but I must be fair, Goop had one of the best looks of the night.
On the other hand, I adore Maya Rudolph, but that dress is not working for her at all. Melissa’s dress is tragic.
    Mila for the win! Perfection.

Milla Jovovich, Gwenyth Platrow, and Cameron Diaz and just KILLING me right now. In the best way possible.

  • Laylalola

I caught something where Melissa McCarthy on the red carpet said she was going to start a clothing line, that designing is what she’d got her training in or somesuch. Why on earth would she pick these kinds of dresses — or not design her own to better flatter her — if that’s the case?

    • mhleta

The dress looks like it’s made from Gulliver’s ball sack, and not in a good way.

  • That dress added about three decades to Miss Woodley’s age. Or was she scampering off to audition for a remake of Valley of the Dolls?

  • bitterk

I love Gwenyth’s dress and cover but the hair killed the effect.  I can’t imagine any one really thought that was flattering.

  • Note to Kelly Osbourne: If you’ve become grating enough to give me new found respect for Giuliana Rancic, you might want to tone it down a little. It drives me nuts that she rips on people she doesn’t like but pitches little hissy fits if anyone on Fashion Police makes fun of one of her friends. Time for a new panelist on that show.

    • alyce1213

I agree, but she has her audience.  I see her existence on the show as another example of show business nepotism gone bad.  She’s a nice enough looking girl with a Brit accent who’s been sartorially rehabilitated and takes fashion risks — but she has NOT paid any dues, she has no fashion chops, and any ‘natural’ ability seems limited to repetitive sound bytes that reveal her shortcomings.  Then again, it’s Fashion Police, so what should I expect?
      (But that hair . . .)

  • marilyn

Why is the purple haired granny on the red carpet?  I feel she is not worthy.

  • frankystein123

Milla Jovovich must had been thinking, “bitch I look GOOD”.

  • Not Blonde

I know I’m way late in saying this — and perhaps it’s been said by now — but I think Angelina lost a bet, hence the protruding leg.
