WERQ: Elizabeth Banks in Versace

Posted on January 20, 2012

We’ve given Elizabeth a hard time on the red carpet before. We couldn’t actually tell you why, because she doesn’t have a personal style that actually registers to us or stays in our memory. We just remember not really loving her red carpet choices pretty consistently. And while we’re ready to be the cheese that stands alone on this one…

Elizabeth Banks attends The Cinema Society & Gilt Man with Grey Goose screening of “Man on a Ledge” in New York City in Versace.

Versace Spring 2012 Collection/Model: Nyasha Matonhodze

We think she looks pretty killa here. Her hair and makeup are youthful (when, to our recollection, they aren’t always so) and the sheer hose with black booties was a smart choice, keeping the lower half very simple, but tying it into that incredibly focus-pulling dress. That’s not an easy dress to wear at all, but she’s styled exactly how she should be to pull it off. You WERQ that S&M cocktail party frock, girl! Fuck good-girl dresses!

    agreed! werq

  • She looks spectacular. Her makeup looked similar on last night’s Daily Show and I remember thinking how good she looks. Someone has a new stylist! Huzzah!

    • Anonymous

The fantastic makeup is being helped by her giving FACE! BEAUTY! FACE!
Seriously, I just made a RuPaul’s Drag Race reference and I still would very much like to hit on her.

  • Absolutely love it. She needs to keep that hairstyle for a while.

    • Anonymous

No idea who she is, sadly, but she looks amazing. Sexy without being slutty. Hope she has that stylist on speed dial, they did her a favor.

I always have a problem with this girl’s hair, even in movies, etc.  But I do like it here.  She looks really good, with the exception of the boob-into-armpit bulge.

    • Anonymous

Many the time I have seen quadra-boobs, but this is the first time for a Tri-boob.

      • Anonymous

except for Jessica Biel’s victorian lacy affair at last week’s Golden Globes. I swear the girl had 3 boobs.

  • Her hair and makeup look great, and the dress is pretty cool. I don’t think I’ll ever get behind black hose and black shoes, though.

    • Jackie Lorden

  • Those booties are not the best choice, IMO.  Everything else is killer, though!

  • She looks great here! But I can’t stop staring at how amazing the model looks in it.

    • The model is stunning.

  • Anonymous

    Her hair is KILLER!

  • I like it. Too.

  • MilaXX

Cute! I wish more gals would go for these type of hose over the super thick, matte tights.

    • Oh, they will. Give it time. It’s happening slowly but sheer colored hose is definitely on its way towards becoming a thing.

  • I got her mixed up with Elizabeth Berkley. It happens.

  • Stefanos Mantyla

Is this the same girl who wore the “party on the front, invasive medical procedure on the back” Prada dress? She sure looks better here!

Werk! THAT is how you wear black pantyhose. They need to be a bit sheer, not super dense.

  • Mariah J

I prefer the way the model is styled but either way, awesome dress. werq

  • It’s JANUARY in New York.  Give the girl a break on the footwear.

  • Anonymous

Huh. When I read “we’re ready to be the cheese that stands alone”, I thought for sure you were going to say you hate this. I was like, I wonder what they don’t like about this; she looks great to me.

  • Anonymous

    Fabulous.  You go, Avery Jessup!

  • Lexie

LOVE THIS. It’s a million times better than when she tries the curly-hair, girl-next-door thing.

  • That is the best her hair and makeup has ever looked! I still just have a personal distaste for the black tights, but overall she looks really great here!

  • Anonymous

Love.  Agree with the WERQ.  She looks fabulous.

  • Anonymous

Wow. Good for her. She looks seriously amazing here. A quantum leap up from previous efforts.

  • Anonymous

Any dress that causes the uncomfortable boob-squeezing look displayed here can never be a WERQ for me, sorry.

    • Judy_J

I was thinking the exact same thing.

    • Anonymous

      me too- ow

  • Terence Ng

I expect no less from Effie Trinket and the future live action Tinkerbell. WERQ, mama.

    • Honestly, I wonder if her work on The Hunger Games is going to influence her personal style at all.  Her costumes are going to be ridiculously avant guarde-esque if the trailer is any indication, and the fact that she can pull it off while looking only mildly freakish may end up being reflected on the red carpet.

  • Anonymous

Other than it looking like she’s getting her left tit cut in half, I agree she is rocking the shit out of that thing.

    • marilyn

It it her boob hanging out, or arm fat?  Can’t tell.

  • Sorry, I usually agree, but I really, really don’t like the hose and the booties. I think this was styled much better on the runway. Still, killa dress!

  • Anonymous

    Love it. Want it.

  • Anonymous

Love her, love this look.  On a side note, this is exactly what Chelsea Handler would look like if she wore makeup.

  • Anna Maria Diamanti

Great dress and she kills in it. Angelina Jolie, take note. Versace is supposed to look like THIS, not tacky or drab. If Elisabeth Banks can nail it so effortlessly, you shouldn’t be struggling so damn much.

  • Lynne Godfrey

Is it me or is her left breast making a run for it?

  • Anonymous

Sorry, but the boobs look as if they’re in great pain.

  • her hair and make-up look amazing. The dress I can take or leave, but over all, she looks a lot better than she has in a long time.

  • Anonymous

Killa, indeed. One of my favorite WERQs recently.

  • Killer dress, but it´s all about the hair, where she more often that not makes mistakes. Here? Aces.

  • I am usually not a fan, but she knocked this one out of the park. She looks so fab I just can’t bear it.

  • Anonymous

No to the black color of the hose (sheer would have been better).  But fab dress.  Fit is a bit wonky on top, though, on the left side.

  • Anonymous

No, the boots and black stockings are too predictable and mute the killer effect of the dress.

  • CQAussie

Oh my, I love this!  Agree with your style assessment but I feel like the top can be fitted better?  Her boobs look a little like they’re in pain….but still – FAB!

  • Presumptuous Insect

A bit of a flesh bulging out thing going on.

  • You are killing me with the black tights!!

OK, they are sheer so I’m willing to let it pass, especially since the dress and shoes are black. FINE. Hair and makeup are great. It’sa good look for her. Much better than a “sweet” look.

  • Anonymous

Sorry to nit-pick on you guys, but anyone who wears them knows those are not sheer hose. They are SEMI-OPAQUE, quite a different look than sheer or opaque.

She looks great. A litle Chelsea Handler-ish, but better than usual.

  • Anonymous

I don’t like the makeup, her undereye concealer is far too light and her lip color is meh

  • She actually has a very Versace vibe in general. I can see Donatella being pleased to dress her.

  • R. L.

Yes!!!  I love a little S&M cocktail dress.  She is indeed WERQing it!

  • Anonymous

Nice. I like the model’s leg- and foot-wear better, but It’s a great dress and she looks fabulous.

  • Anonymous

Girl is werq-ing that modern Xena look.

  • Anonymous

i dont like her stocking/shoe choice… i wish she stuck to black pumps instead of booties, and a nude leg. but even with all that in mind i agree she is wearing that dress fabulously

  • Anonymous

I don’t really like this dress, but EB is pulling it off and for that she deserves credit.   She has the same struggle as January Jones – very beautiful, but not distinctive.

  • She looks like Chelsea Handler…

  • Anonymous

Eh.  To me, she looks like the girl next door who’s trying unsuccessfully to look naughty.

  • Lowercase werq for Elizabeth.  Uppercase WERQ! for the runway model.

  • Anonymous

    Love it…head to mid-thigh 😉

  • Anonymous

    Wow. She looks fantastic here.

  • Anonymous

it is fantastic on the model, only so- so on her. Besides it looking too tight causing that bulge in front, she doesn’t have the “attitude” to wear that dress. The dress is wearing her instead of vice versa

  • Anonymous

Her face is well done – the dress is great – just don’t like the way she is bulging out the top.  Seems to be a trend, though based on the looks at the Golden Globes.

  • Anonymous

Living up to her potential here. It’s about time. I can’t remember ever seeing her hair and makeup looking so good. Well done.

  • Anonymous

    love it!!!!!

  • Anonymous

Sorry, she doesn’t have the sass for the Dominatrix Barbie look.

  • Anonymous

I have a really hard telling the difference between her, Elizabeth Mitchell, Julie Bown and a dozen other blondes with much the same features. Is this one on 30 Rock? Was she on Lost? I’m lost. Pretty sure I saw her on The Daily Show last night and she looked hard and haggard, so this is an improvement over that. I still think she needs to stop  with the harsh bang and harsh eyeliner.

Helmet and a lance and she’s ready to go

  • charlotte

She could be Julie Bowen’s sister…

  • compared to her usual look, this is great.. but she could have gone without the tights

  • Anonymous

    LOVE this Versace dress!!

  • Anonymous

Agreed.  I am sucker for a hot babe in a hot Versace gown.  And the lower half here are perfect.  It’s a stand alone dress – no need to do anything but make it look edgy.  I would have liked a big gold cuff here.  Or a chunnky bracelet of any kind.  nothing sparkly though.  leather, gold, hammered metals, something of that sort.

  • Susan Crawford

VERY cool, Ms. Banks! I like the hose and black shoe treatment so the dress can pop and sparkle. And the hair and make-up? Really smooth and oh-so-right. You GO, grrrl!

  • Anonymous

She’s NOT WERQ-ing anything… Look at her breast (fat?!) just overflowing from the bustier. SO, SO WRONG.

  • Anonymous

Flawless makeup and hair, not a fan of the dress but I tend not to like Versace.

  • Lizzy B. 2.0! And I love it. Huge – and overdue – improvement. Love everything about this look including her new hair and make-up.

  • Anonymous

I mostly love her entire look here, but again with the overflow. At least she is getting flack from the kittens when Madonna got a pass for much worse. I hated that look, even though she was wearing an awesome dress, but almost everyone, including you lads, ignored it.

  • I think the sheer hose are actually problematic in this dress because it brings the look out of proportion, especially because the right-bottom side of the dress is “solid” black.  It makes it look like someone cut a huge chunk out of her body…she should have worn it somewhat like the model is wearing it.

  • Anonymous

The styling and the attitude are just what they need to be for this dress.

  • Anonymous

FAB until I hit the hose. Great little dress. Like something a hot soprano would wear while singing Wagner.

  • Zi Jie Tan

She looks fierce! I just caught My Idiot Brother where she was a brunette – she looks wayyy hotter as a brunette! I wonder why she doesn’t keep that look.. Is she a natural blonde?

  • I don’t know that this quite qualifies for a WERQ. It’s very nice and for the most part she looks very good. Just a couple details I don’t like.  In the first photo, you can see that the skirt is too long on her and makes her legs look short.  Look where it falls on the model. Granted, the model is 6 foot 2 and weighs 79 pounds, but on Liz, the skirt looks much heavier. In the last photo, she’s got some boob muffin-toppin’ going on…how much did she have to suck it in to get it zipped? Nice, but not a WERQ for me.

  • frankystein123

    Fuck yes.
