The Prada ‘Pyramide’ Bag

Posted on January 13, 2012

We just adore these.

Prada has launched the ’50s style ‘Pyramide’ handbag for Spring/Summer 2012. Sporty and classic, modern and just a little bit granny at the same time.

They almost look like little feminized varsity bags.

But of course, it’s the opinions of the Bitter Kittens that take center stage here. What do the ladies think? Could you see yourself sashaying somewhere with one of these on your arm, big Jackie O sunglasses on your face, and a ton of attitude left in your wake?

What we’re asking here is:

Prada’s “Pyramide” bags: YEA or NAY?

I love them.. except for that damn triangle.  Sorry, I won’t advertise for Prada or anyone else.

      • Anonymous

It’s so annoying, isn’t it?  It ruins a perfectly well designed anything for me.

      • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

Really? I mean, I VERY STRONGLY agree, which is why I hate Louis Vuitton and Coach bags, even the Chanel ones with the giant logo, but I think a small triangle in the same color and material as the bag itself falls well within reasonable branding limits. I wouldn’t even mind if that triangle were gold.

        • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Yeah, I don’t like the giant logo, but something tiny is fine with me.

Mainly because it’s not about advertising; it’s a matter of protection for the designer.  Apparel designs have virtually no legal protections, which is why knock-offs are so prevalent.  What DOES have protection is a trademarked logo.  Most designers (particularly of accessories) use a label on the outside because while anyone can knock off the design itself, the logo cannot be legally duplicated because of the trademark.

        • Anonymous

I with you. I have a friend who has a couple of Coach bags and they have no appeal for me. The logo kills it for me and ruins it. But, everyone KNOWS it’s a Coach bag I seriously, I think that’s why she bought it. Different stroke, ya know. The logo here is small and tatstefully done so I’m fine with it.

          • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

I think that is why people buy the, so people know they have an couple extra hundred dollars to throw around. I can’t for the life of me think of any other reason. Coach bags are not more attractive than lesser brands, and I’m not sure they actually last longer.

            • Anonymous

Mine is going on 30 years

            • http://twitter.com/saturnwings Alexis

Actually, some Coach bags do have a couple of design elements that make them a bit more sturdy than your average bags.  And they’re also quite well constructed.  Granted, my experience with Coach is limited to the few made entirely of leather and don’t have those hideous Cs on them, but really, I’ve quite liked the one bag I own.  It has totally turned me from my hate-everything-Coach stances.  (But yes, the bags themselves aren’t necessarily any more attractive than lesser brands.)

Anyway, don’t like the Prada bags.  I’m not a Prada girl to start with, but really, these have a bit too much structure in them for me.  I like my bags to slouch a bit to compensate for my inability to.

            • mrspeel2

I think that is why people buy them, so people know they have an couple extra hundred dollars to throw around.

As they used to say: If you’ve got it, flaunt it, so IF I could afford to buy one, design, comfort and useability would be my main objectives. BUT, the logo would certainly be near the top of my list of reasons to buy ANY couture purse and I’d be proud as punch (another old saying) to carry it around with me all day long!

          • Anonymous

What is so ridiculous about the Coach brand is they actually sell more of those bags at their prolific “outlet” stores in outlet malls.  Here in the midwest, EVERYONE at Walmart with their Kate Gossilen hair has a Coach branded bag they got at the outlet mall at Lake of the Ozarks.  No one I know with any real money buys them anymore, they leave that brand for their cleaning ladies.  Snobbish?  Totally. True? Totally.  My poor sister had the misfortune of being suckered into a LV bag from a friend with “a connection”.  When the clasp broke after three months she took it to the LV boutique in Plaze Frontenac where she was informed, very nicely, that it was a knock off from China.  Which I had told her the day she bought it.

            • Anonymous

This made me laugh because it’s so true!  I used to work with a woman (middle aged, as am I) who flaunted her Coach bag, and the big thing that annoyed me about it (besides the obvious) is that she still dressed Totally 80s in bright colors and prints that clashed violently with the handbag.  But she was on-trend among her friends, I guess…

      • http://twitter.com/OperaSickness Opera Sickness

It’s pretty difficult to find a bag that doesn’t have the brand somewhere on the outside.  At least the Prada triangle is a lot more subtle than a bag completely covered with Gucci Gs or LVs or whatever.

        • Anonymous

Sadly, if I saw this from a distance, the triangle would make me think “Guess” not Prada.  I love living in South Dakota…

Love the bag though.  A little sporty and a little granny.  Sounds like me a lot of days.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UH5XQGXDKLXDSVGB626B53KXBA linda

It kind of looks like a bowling bag to me.  Are you sure it doesn’t say Brunswick?

      • Anonymous

true. and i’m not a rich girl, so if suddenly i were walking around with prada on my arm (even authentic prada id legitimately paid for), it’d just look like a knockoff anyway, especially when set against my forever 21 coat, as i climb into my decade-old car.

    • Sam Corbett

I think I would feel like a stewardess carrying one of those… but I have the wrong below-the-belt equipment to be their target customer anyway!

      • Anonymous

Well, I am so equipt, and I see stewardess, too! Maybe that robin’s egg blue? Would have loved them but for the size and that nagging image of “Come Fly With Me!”

        • Anonymous

Nay from me too. Not my kind of bags.

          • http://twitter.com/TraciRai Traci Rai

Well I am actually a stew, and I really want to walk through the airport with one of these bags now! Unfortunately I make stewardess money, so this is strictly in dream territory.

      • Anonymous

Yeah the image of the Pan Am stewardesses heading out to board their flight comes to mind with this bag. It’s chic but maybe too big for a handbag.

    • Anonymous

I LOVE THEM YEAH YEAH YEAH…
I LOVE THEM YEAH YEAY YEAH…
I WANT THOSE BAGS IN EVERY COLOR
I LOVE THEM YEAH YEAH YEAH!!!!

      • foodycat

I think you are being a bit ambiguous. Do you mean you like the bags? Me too. One in every colour please!

        • http://www.facebook.com/carrie.lindstedt Carrie Lindstedt

          I’ll have what she’s having.

      • Anonymous

        YES DEAR GOD YES MINE.

      • Melvis Velour

As the legendary Flotilla de Barge might have said “….oh mah stars and garters!”

        I’m a guy – yes, really – and I’d carry one in a heartbeat!

    • http://heartprintandstyle.blogspot.com Vivi N

      YAY!!!

    • Anonymous

I will take the blue one, thank you very much.

    • http://twitter.com/AbbottRabbit AbbottRabbit

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=527150091 Pat Biswanger

A huge YEA!  My heart skipped a beat when I saw these bags.  And how often do you see a fashion accessory that both we and Queen Elizabeth could love?

      • Anonymous

That’s what I thought too, I could totally see the Queen rocking on of these! I love them too :)

    • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

Is there a MEH option? These are nice, but I want to be able to say something more than that for how much I’m sure these cost. The proportions are a little weird to me. I’d want something slightly smaller or slightly larger. The colors are divine and I love the way it opens. But still, not enough to waaaant it.

      • http://twitter.com/MissAmynae Amy Putnam Ellinger

        Agreed. (and love your name!!)

I carry my grandmother’s bowling bag from the 50′s, would love to see this bag in that style.

        • Anonymous

I immediately thought of bowling bags as well!

        • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

Your grandmother’s bowling bag!!! That is about 13,643 times cooler than these purses.

          • http://twitter.com/MissAmynae Amy Putnam Ellinger

Awww, Thanks!!  I’ve had it forever, from when I used to play dressup in her closet! It’s navy, with white trim & 2 stripes, and has her name “Lura Helen” embroidered on the side. One of my favorite things in my closet :-)

            • Anonymous

THAT is an awesome handbag, Amy! Love it!

            • Anonymous

that’s very sweet of you to say :-)  thanks Auntie!

            • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

That is *so* cool. Just the sort of thing I’d blog about when I get my blog (WordyDoodles) back up again!

            • Anonymous

Aww!  :D I told my grandmother you said this, and she laughed that her “old beat up blue bag was causing such a ruckus!”   Hehe, crazy old woman.  Hope you get your blog back up soon!

            • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

I’m with you on this one!

    • http://twitter.com/sockandaphone Gaby

i like them, but the color choices seem kinda weird, specially the red one.

      • http://www.facebook.com/CatherineKatz Catherine Katz

I like the red one!  I’m not sure about the others, though!  So we’re opposites!

    • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

I guess I’d want to see how the inside is set up before committing. Not that I could afford one anyway.

    • Anonymous

Yea! and if there were any justice in this world, that black one would be hanging off my arm right now.

    • Anonymous

      YEA!

    • Anonymous

I love the red one! It could add just the right pop of color you need for an outfit.

    • http://twitter.com/OracleKath Kathrine Marlow

love them, i’d collect them all, like Pokemon or something :)

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

Oooooo, I love them! Especially the baby blue one!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Clydette-Wantland/673315286 Clydette Wantland

The blue one looks like a bowling ball bag.

      • Anonymous

That’s kind of why I like it.

        • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

          Agreed.

    • Anonymous

YEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want the red and the camel….. gorgeous!

    • http://twitter.com/ohmybears48 Michelle Argento

      WANNNNNNNNT. I yearn for those.

    • Anonymous

Nay. They look like upmarket Adidas bags to me.

    • Daisy James

Totally impractical, and verging on bowling-bag in terms of looks, but for some reason that black and white one still makes my heart go pitter-pat.

    • Sara__B

Mini bowling bags. But I still like them.

    • Anonymous

THEY WILL GO PERFECT WITH MY CANDY STORE/CLOWN MAKE-UP!

      • Anonymous

bwahahhaa.  Thank you for the laugh!  WANT NAVY IMMEDIATELY.

    • Haley Buchanan

LOVE THEM.  The grey and gold one shall be mine… if I inherit or win some money somehow.  And the branding doesn’t bother me. It’s small and tasteful unlike some other handbag branding I’ve seen before…

    • Anonymous

YEA.  I love these.  I want #2 or #4, should anyone rich enough to purchase one for me wish to do so.  LOL

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=625120374 Jessica Walsh

YEA…. the red one needs to be in my life immediately.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jill-Tracy/100001557759289 Jill Tracy

      LOVE THE RED ONE!!

    • http://twitter.com/democracydiva Democracy Diva

YAYYYY. I want to buy the blue one for my grandmother (even if she can’t leave the house, girl can still rock a fierce accessory), the black for my mom, the red for my sister and the gold for me!

Except a year of my rent probably won’t cover one purse, but whatevz. A girl can dream.

    • Anonymous

They aren’t hideous, but they aren’t my thing.  I do like how they open, but I’m curious to see how widely they open and what it’s like inside.  Just a deep pit, or are there pockets, etc.

    • Call me Bee

Yea, yea, a thousand times YEA!  Gods willing, I’ll have one of these very soon, as I am willing to give up my entire year’s clothing budget forone of these this beautiful objects.

    • MilaXX

Hell YEA! I want them all.

    • Anonymous

It is so nice to FINALLY see some handbags that aren’t totally covered in studs and crystals and all the other nonsense they’ve been covered with for the past 5 years. I want one of each please!! But especially, no…I can’t decide. One of each.

      • Anonymous

        What you said!

    • Anonymous

I don’t like the white side panels. Makes it look too “bowling bag” for me.

    • Anonymous

Love them! Can’t wait for the cheaper copycats.

      • Anonymous

I was just about to say that.  Sending my mom to Chinatown stat!

    • Anonymous

YEA for me. Like them all except the light blue. The color, along with the shape, looks too bowling ball bag for me. Digging the others, though.

    • Anonymous

I can’t fathom why “practical” enters into a conversation about a bag with a 4-digit pricetag, yet I know, I know that opening that bag in order to find your sunglasses will require a lot of table space. Just look at it! You can’t discreetly slip your hand into that thing and get what you need out. It will be The Public Opening Of the Bag.

      • Anonymous

“It will be The Public Opening Of the Bag.”  That almost made me spew tea on my monitor!

        • Anonymous

Always so awkward when you’re carrying tampons, amirite?

    • Anonymous

LOVE!!  So what’s the price on these babies??  Although I know, If I have to ask I can’t afford!!  :-)

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I’ll take one in black, blue and red, thankyouverymuch. (P.S. My birthday is next month, hint, hint.)

    • Anonymous

Yes, and in every color, please.

    • Jennifer Hamner

I *adore* them, especially the light blue.  I really like the return to more structured/tailored bags.  The slouchy/sloppy bags that were popular the last few years turned me off.

    • Anonymous

I can’t decide between red and yellow; maybe I should take black? Looks like you could carry your iPad in this. And, probably some knitting, too.

Sporty and chic.  Looks like the clasp opens the bag almost on a hinge.  Definite YEA!

    • Anonymous

I like them and the size would work for me. I love the navy with the bit of red trim.  Very cute.

    • Judy_J

They remind me of a bowling bag, but I like them very much….especially the black one.

      yea indeed!!

    • Susan Crawford

Very retro – the blue one is SO Pan Am stewardessy! I’ve never been a huge fan of Prada bags, but these are classic in shape, not too gargantuan, and would work with all sorts of looks, from lunch with the ladies to work to theater to . . . oh, hell, just put the black and white with red piping in the mail for me right now, Miuccia!

    • Anonymous

Meh I don’t care for them.

LOVE!!!!!!  I really want….all of them.

    • Anonymous

Likes: the shape, the clean graphic lines, the colors, the Kelly-bag feel.

      Dislikes: The logo.

The killer for me is that, much as I love the style of bag, I just wouldn’t use one that doesn’t have a shoulder strap.

    • Anonymous

Yea.  I would totally buy one in a heartbeat, and then call it a murse.

    • Anonymous

No thanks. And I am a granny.

      Yea!

    • Anonymous

No good.  Most women I know need an everyday bag — the structure of this one doesn’t allow for stuffing a scarf, ballet shoes, makeup, sandwich-in-baggie, makeup for later, etc etc etc.  I’d take the Celine tote or the stand-by Balenciaga or even the PS1.  This one just isn’t flexible enough.

    • Anonymous

      LOVE LOVE LOVE

    • Anonymous

Oh yea – I like a structured bag!  Is there anywhere that shows what they look like open?   That trim goes down so far I’m thinking that they may be verging into muppet-mouth territory…

    • http://twitter.com/emiliohodoggio Emily H

      YEA!

    • Susan Walker

Love it – one in each color.  I don’t care about the logo and I suppose someone there might be someone around here that does, but I just like the clean lines, the colors and simplicity after so many bags with chains, pockets galore and what all attached.  So I guess that makes me a bit of a granny?

    • Anonymous

Yea! Oh, love them all…But I really want the red/black/white/gold…so yummy…

    • http://twitter.com/poptartsjen Pop Tarts Jen

A million times yay! I would definitely carry one!

    • Anonymous

Are the bowling balls color-coordinated to the bag as well?  Given that it’s Prada, maybe it would be bocce balls instead, which look like they’d fit better.

    • Anonymous

YEA in theory. Nay in practice. At least for me. I can’t do an over the wrist/forearm type of purse. I wish I could, but I just can’t make it work. They are awfully pretty though.

      • Anonymous

I agree.  I need a longer strap to hang from my shoulder.  They are very nice though.

      Yes please!

    • bethannstamps

agree, giant logos are so over, never ever liked them. a small one is fine, acceptable, needed even, but honking giant ones are a real turn off.  the bag shape is good, i do like a classic lady like bag. ie Jackie or Grace.

YEA. Love, love, love the blue. I am digging the auto-inspired aesthetic of late (but then I love kitsch, particularly Americana). I like how the Prada logo turns into a hood-ornament for the bag.

i’m not overjoyed at the color choices, but i expect more options will come out as the bag hits its popularity stride.

      out!

I’m gonna say NAY, not because they’re not pretty, but because they’re nothing new or different.  I just bought a Kate Spade bag this past fall that’s the exact same shape.

      I want one

YEA, although I think I’d like it better with silver metal instead.

I’m not really a fan of them. Prada isn’t usually my style overall. The only part I really like is the gold on the edges- that adds a lot of glam.

Bowling bags – more so than the ones called “bowling bag” – what was is last week?

Yay, although the shiny gold accent isnt really my thing. But I love the shape and structure.

I love Prada. In fact, I have a Prada bag that I want to be buried with some day. But, I dislike those bags. I don’t dislike them as much as their nylon/leather bags (one of my top 3 most hated bags –Chanel quilted bags and Bottega Veneta’s woven leather bags are the other two, if you’re curious), but they are high up on the list of “things I wish my favorite fashion houses had never designed” list. I wish they’d ditch the triangular logo and just go for the Prada name in metal, like Miu Miu does on its bags.

YEA x 1000. But I agree about the label-whoring of bags in general.

Definitely a Yea. But then again I’m into the retro/vintage thing….

I don’t dig logos of any kind (I am not a billboard) But if I could afford this nice bag, I’d definitely tie a silk scarf around the handle ala Joan Holloway/Harris in Mad Men!

nope.  Looks like a bowling ball bag.

It’s a bag that demands to be held wrist-up-and-facing-in, a la Japanese women.
