The Art of Elysium Gala Red Carpet

Posted on January 18, 2012

Darlings, it was The Art of Elysium 5th Annual “Heaven” Black Tie Charity Gala! The problem with Black Tie Charity Galas is that everyone’s pretty much on their best behavior, which means this is going to be a boring post if you’re here looking for bitchy opinions. But hey, a little positivity never hurt anyone, right?

Hit it, charity-minded celebs:

Abigail Spencer

Very pretty. There’s some awkwardness with the top around the waistline, making it look a little shoved in, but we love this dress.

Amber Heard in Donna Karan

Drop dead gorgeous.

Angella Lindvall

Great color; perhaps a bit too many elements.

Brittany Snow in Catherine Deane

A beautiful dress that’s way too long on her.

Busy Philipps

This gal’s got some bad instincts. She seems to default to Big Dresses that make her look bigger.

Camilla Belle in Carolina Herrera

Gorgeous, but again, it might be just a tad too complicated with one too many elements.

Jamie King in Valentino

She RUINED this gorgeous dress with that hairstyle. Absolutely ruined the look. The shoes look wrong too.

January Jones in Chanel

Cute dress; awful shoes.

Jennifer Morrison in Kaufmanfranco

Simple, but she looks great.

Julianne Hough in Kaufmanfranco

She’s still styled too old for her age, but she looks great.

Kelly Osbourne in Guishem

Y’know, we like Kelly and we like that she takes risks, but we’ve seen too many questionable choices from her to take her too seriously as a red carpet critic. This looks like a ball gown for a priest.

Kirsten Dunst in Valentino

Gorgeous.

Minka Kelly in Oscar de la Renta

We’re already a little over yellow, but we’ll take it over all the nudes and blushes and other euphemisms for the color of Silly Putty.

Molly Sims in Marchesa

It’s the “I’m not fat; I’m pregnant” red carpet pose. This is maybe a bit much for maternity wear, but she can pull it off. We just wish she hadn’t done up her hair that way. The dress is precious enough without precious hair.

Rachel Bilson in Chanel

It’s just all right. No great shakes.

Rashida Jones in Peter Som

Striking. Not sure about that band of black right at her waist and hips, but she turns heads.

Rose McGowan in Temperley London

It’s a bit too “Aphrodite” for our tastes, but the gal sure knows how to wear a white gown without looking bridal. It’s a talent.

The post said Kelly Osborne.  The photo is of Kelly Osborne.  My mind still went “I thought Bea Arthur died last year.”

Them’s fightin’ words – Bea Arthur had better style!

She looks like an extra from The Munsters

          Or Mad Madam Mim!

A cross between Madam Mim and Miss Medusa!

            Oh, brilliant reference.

Does she have gray hair on purpose?

        • P M

          Incredibly – yes.

I think she does. It appears to be very trendy right now. April on PR has the same color.

I can’t figure out if it’s bleached out so far that it’s gone past platinum to grey, or if it’s been toned to that color.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZBFH32YG44LIIZYLSQPMBXMYCU Sarah

I remember having a drunken, drugged out conversation with my friend in college to the effect of “Instead of dreadlocks (which I had) and purple hair (which she had) we should go full geriatric grey-blue if we really wanted to freak people out.” Done, and done..

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Deborah-Jozayt/100002949685297 Deborah Jozayt

It’s toned to that color, but it does have to be lifted to a certain level in order for the desired tone to take. If you bleach someone’s hair to the breaking point (Recent Lilo Pics) the hair almost has a see through clearness to it and feels/looks like spaghetti.

Kelly’s hair is bleached, and the roots are toned properly, but her ends have more of a blondish tint because the hair is so shattered it can’t absorb the toner. Heaven help her when she wants to be rid of that color.

            • Anonymous

Maybe she’ll shave her head! I would fully support that.

            • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

Yep. I used to bleach my hair every summer, from a level 5 brown to platinum. I’m well acquainted with spaghetti hair. I’m also familiar with bleach breakage. I once let one of my co-workers bleach my hair.  She was very good with color, but I learned the hard way that she should have boned up on bleaching. A week later most of my hair was at the bottom of the shower.

When Kelly decides to change it, I hope whoever does her hair is an expert in fillers, because that’s going to be a nightmare.

I guess TLo didn’t get the memo that “braids as headbands” are a thing this week. It’s OK: I didn’t get the memo myself until yesterday in my Facebook feed. That’s why we have a Bitter Kitten community.

I HATE Kelly Osbourne’s hair. Amber Heard looks fantastic.

    • P M

Brittany Snow: I wonder if she tripped often with that hem. Minka Kelly: eye-twitching colour. Amber Heard: Stepford wife barbie.
Jamie King: All I can hear in my head is Bavarian music. Is that normal?
Busy Phillips: Who the hell gets named Busy Phillips??? Why would one’s mother do that?

      • Anonymous

It’s a nickname. Her real name is Elizabeth. Apparently, as a baby, she was in perpetual motion. Hence, Busy.

        • P M

Ohhh. Okay – thanks for clarifying.

Will someone please tell Kelly that using Fanci-full lilac rinses on your bleached platinum blonde hair is only OK if you are 82, are wearing a print dress, live in the south and have a cane you use to hit people.

      • Anonymous

Yup. My grandmother uses it, and it looks great on her, but she’s 86.

      • Anonymous

it literally looks the color of hair bleach while its processing. April on PRA is in the same boat.

        • Anonymous

I want April to get auf’ed just because I can’t stand looking at her nasty hair anymore. I know it is shallow but I just can’t. And wtf how can anyone justify paying Kelly to be a Red Carpet critic with that hair, seriously.

      • Anonymous

All of the “I’m not really artistic, I just look like I am” girls at my school have hair like this. It isn’t unique if everyone is doing it and it certainly doesn’t look any less stupid.

    • http://twitter.com/ShelfAfterlife Shelf Afterlife

      Is that really Brittany Snow??

      • Nicole Chubb

Yeah, an ah-ooo-gah with cartoon eyeballs kind of d.d.g. … if the boobs hadn’t been squoze so much, we could take this seriously (same thing w/ Miranda Kerr the other night: a too-tight top ruined her look in an otherwise lovely dress).

I’ll take the Nora Arnezeder version of Miss Heard’s ‘type’ any day.  Seems to know that you don’t need to work the sexy quite so hard — usually channels it through an easy, natural elegance.

      • http://vvatima.livejournal.com/ murt

Ya her boobs are hiked up way too high – I don’t know if that’s the look T&L want women to go for when they tell them to get a better bra…

    • Anonymous

I stopped listening to Kelly Osbourne seriously when she made that disgusting comment about Mila Kunis’s SAG dress.  The only person on that show who has any amount of fashion knowledge is the gay guy (He’s awesome!).  Joan brings the comedy.  Kelly and Giuliana just don’t bring anything except bad hair.

Amber Heard is heads above the rest.  No competition.  The best of the rest is probably Minka Kelly.

      • Anonymous

        What did Kelly say?

      • Anonymous

Nooo, the gay guy IMO likes everything that is just “in” at the moment (I remember a specific horrid python coat that Anna Wintour wore). But I agree that Giuliana des not add much to that show…. I never thought I’d say I find myself agreeing with Joan a lot  :s

        • Anonymous

I didn’t say he brought a lot.  But he has the most knowledge.  I don’t always agree with him, but I like how he phrases his arguments.  I do agree with Joan a lot, but most of the time I don’t agree with whatever the majority of the panel thinks.

        • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

Giuliana bugs the hell out of me, and I’m not sure why. I’ve seen her in a few get-ups that should prevent her from commenting on anyone else’s clothes. And, based on the dress Kelly’s wearing, the same thing could be said of her. Not to mention, the more I hear about Kelly, the less I like her.

George is OK. I don’t always agree with him, but I think he does know a lot about fashion. I feel sorry for him when he disagrees with everyone, because they all gang up on him.

As for Joan, I think she’s the cat’s ass (which is a good thing).

          • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

Whether you agree with them or not, this week’s GG show was hysterically funny.

It’s interesting to see how many times they (and other fashion commentators) like a look that we kittens have torn apart. Beauty is for sure in the eye of the beholder.

            • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

Oooh, it’s still on my DVR just waiting for me to watch it.

I probably don’t have to tell you how many times I’ve thought they’d lost their minds re: a look that most of us have hated. Then I remember what Santino said: Relax, it’s just fashion. (Now I’m not sure if it was Santino)

          • Anonymous

Me too! I mean, I’m so sorry for what she’s been through, but her extensions and wardrobe (I’ll be mean: the woman has NO waist, please stay away from tight dresses already and eat a sandwich) annoy me quite a bit.

I think I agree because in the starlet/hooker part I usually think (hope?) it’s the latter… like Joan does.

      • MilaXX

That’s because George is an actual stylist while Kelly and Julianna are just wannabees.

    • Anonymous

On Fashion Police, Kelly got pissed about something and announced that she doesn’t follow trends, she SETS them.  If she’s looking to bring back ugly, mission accomplished.

      • Anonymous

Unfortunately, ugly has never gone away . . .

    • Anonymous

Molly Sims’ fake braid totally clashes with the color of the hair that is growing out of her actual head. That is some Claire’s circa 2002 shit right there, Molly.

    • Anonymous

You guys just don’t have your bitch on today. How do you let Angella Lindvall (whoever the fuck she is) get away with the Scarlett O’Hara curtain treatment across the bottom of that dress? How do you let Molly Sims get away with a pink Mother Nature at a costume party ensemble with a “she can pull it off”? I’m shocked!

Abigail Spencer, for what it’s worth, should wear way too much makeup ALL THE TIME. It transforms her.

      DAY-um, Amber Heard.

And I am just so impressed with Kirsten Dunst lately.  Her taste level has just done a 180-degree turn from a few years ago, when I would have put her in the same pathetic category as Mischa Barton.

Preemptive comment: Yes, Rose McGowan did something to her face, and no, it was not because she was in a car accident a few years back. She only suffered a cut beneath her eye and it did not necessitate her reconstructing her entire face.  She apparently did that to herself by choice.

Why is Busy Phillips all over the red carpet circuit right now?  And how do we make her go away?

      • Anonymous

Cougar Town is back in February, and they probably want to get the stars out there in anticipation.

And since it’s way better than a show called Cougar Town has any right to be, I don’t mind.

Was Molly Sims is auditioning for a remake of The Princess Bride? She looks adorable, though. Thought Rachel Bilson was Selena Gomez at first. I miss Rose McGowan’s old face. Rashida Jones has been looking better lately. I think January Jones looks stumpified.

Oh hell to the no! I hope I’m not the only one that sees the 1970- 1980′s ruffle hem thing going on on Angella’s dress?  Pretty sure that is something that needs to remain in the same decade in which it was created.

The dress Busy Phillips is wearing is fabulous. It doesn’t look good on her though. She kinda looks like she should be holding a basket of laundry on her hip on the way to the clothes line.
My favorite is Jamie King, head to toe. Love the braids especially. Okay I’ve said it , does everybody hate me?
And goddamn it is Rose McGowan trying to make people remark upon her face?

Busy Phillips – somebody needs to talk to her about these atrocious dresses she insists on wearing.
      Camilla Belle – beautiful
      Jamie King – I think it’s hideous.
January J. – LOVE that dress
Julianne Hough – yes, it’s too mature a look for her, but at least it’s not ugly. She wears some truly hideous clothes sometimes. She’s been sporting what appears to be a natural tan for some time now. Sweetie, you might want to cut down on the sun exposure, otherwise by the time you’re 40 you’ll look like an old shoe.
Kelly Osbourne! I love her and I love that she has fun changing her hair color every few days, but this has to be the worst, most unflattering hair she has ever gone for. I can’t wait for her to change it already.
Kirsten Dunst – Wow, she must have hired a stylist. She’s been looking really great lately.
Minka Kelly – I don’t mind all the yellow, as long as it flatters the wearer, like here. I can’t stand seeing people dressed in yellow when it’s clearly not a good color for them.

I think Jennifer Morrison’s dress is helped by her stunning posture. Loved it.

When I look at Jamie King all I can see is that that fabric would be perfect for a period piece about Napoleon and Josephine. Add some bees and it would be perfect.

Love Amber Heard for her old-school Va Va Voom, Jamie King’s dress for resisting its wearer’s attempts to ruin it, Jennifer Morrison for getting it right for once and Kirsten Dunst for consistently bringing her fabness as an actress into her clothes these days. I love January and her dress too, but there’s something odd about her make-up.

My thoughts, exactly! I mean, I critique red carpet all the time from my cube at work while wearing Target slacks, but I don’t get on TV for my opinions. If I did, I would try my ass off to not be the Pot (as in, “calling the kettle black”).

I wondered why she didn’t say that the first time she was on with that ridiculous hair. And for that matter, the hair she had before wasn’t too good, either (same big shape which does her no favors in a dark-rooted fake blonde). I would love to see some critique on this one though, you’re so right. Although Priestly Ball Gown is hard to beat :)

Amber Heard should look up to Jennifer Morrison. I think her thrusting of the breasts a la Blanche Devereaux is was making her look like her chest is going to explode. The dress is gorgeous though, and nicely fitted. Molly Sims looks like she is going to be in a remake of “The Mists of Avalon.”

king in valentino: i actually love the hair; also love the dress, but i tend to be very tolerant towards lord of the rings fashion. taking the sleeves off might have made this a little more current.

Can I just say that the obvious winning designer this season is Valentino, and rightly so? I want all of those dresses for my princess fantasies.

January Jones’s shoes look awful because they are on the wrong foot.

    • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

Abigail Spencer: The weird treatment around the waist is keeping this from being a perfect look. Love her messy hair.
Amber Heard looks like a 1930s movie star. She always looks fabulous.
Angella Lindvale: My eyes! That dress is horrible.
Brittany Snow: A gorgeous dress, and she looks great in it. I agree it’s way too long.
      Busy Phillips: Channeling Joan Crawford
Camilla Belle: Yeah, I don’t think so.
Jaime King : Ugly dress made uglier by that stupid braid
January Jones: How did she manage to make Chanel look like a cheap cotton housedress? I’m not much of a Chanel fan, but I think that dress would look great on someone with an actual sense of style.
Jennifer Morrison: She can be boring sometimes, but she looks like a goddess here.
Julieanne Hough: A very pretty woman with a killer body. She looks fantastic in that dress.
Kelly Osborne: I’m overwhelmed by how hideous that dress is.
Kirsten Dunst: I can see the beauty in this dress, but I’m just not in love with it. It’s much better, however, than the Valentino that Jaime is wearing, and Kiki looks great.
Minka Kelly: That color looks good on her, and I like that the dress is simple. But, damn, it’s a bright dress. If the power goes out, everyone can just follow Minka to safety.
Molly Sims: I actually really like the dress, but she looks like she trying too hard. A little earth mother goes a long way.
Rachel Bilson: Talk about trying too hard. It’s pretty, but it’s just too much.
      Rashida Jones: Flat out gorgeous.
Rose McGowan: Again with the looking great in a white gown.

Jennifer Morrison takes it. She looks perfect.

I think Rachel Bilson looks adorable.

Molly Sims looks ready to go to the Renaisssance Faire and get a turkey leg.

    • http://twitter.com/taijuuuh Taija HU!

Goodness me, January Jones looks like a blonde Kristen Wiig. Is it just me, am I going crazy?

    • http://twitter.com/alacartealbums à la carte albums

I bet that Kelly Osborne’s priestly prom gown would look fucking awesome on Tilda Swinton.
Also, even though I am quite content to be a butchy dyke myself, sometimes I just want to point to Amber Heard and yell “one of ours! No flannel required!”

You 2 are feeling kind today.  Jamie King’s hair is bad, but that dress isn’t gorgeous; it’s too loose, baggy with puffy sleeves.  Kristen Dunst is gorgeous only if you’re grading on a curve; it’s definitely good compared to some really awful outfits she’s sported in the past.

    • Toto Maya

I’ll admit that I had trouble watching the Fashion Police as I thought that what Kelly wore to the Golden Globes was WAY more hideous than anything else on the Worst Dressed list. And she was like, “I love this dress because it’s similar to what I wore…” girl, that is NOT a good thing.

I don’t get Angella Lindvold – she’d the “Heidi” of All Stars, right? She’s a model, right? And that’s how she stands to get her picture taken? It baffles me…is she some BIG model type and I’m just out of the loop?

Also, I wonder what said “Heidi” to Jamie King when she looked at that stunning Valentino? She should be banned from wearing Valentino – or any other great designer – for the balance of 2012.

Boy, I’m crabby. Must need coffee.

Amber Heard looks amazing.  But honestly – why do all the dresses have TRAINS?  I thought you really only wanted that for a wedding or a coronation as queen to a large country…

    • Anonymous

Jamie King’s giant body/tiny head from the camera angle are freaking me out, and Molly Sims is channeling Princess Buttercup.

      • Beth G

I had the EXACT same reaction to Molly Sims – in fact at first I thought it was Robin Wright.

    • MilaXX

Abigail Spencer – Nice outfit, but I think the waist needs to be synched in a bit.Amber Heard – Gorgeous!
Angella Lindvall – Reminds me of Rami’s PR dress and that’s not a good thing.
Brittany Snow – Could stand to lose 2-3 inches.
Busy Philipps – Not her dress.
Camilla Belle – It looks a little too short. I hate the scarf hem and the shoes.
Jamie King  – The hair is too Swiss Miss and the shoes are too modern.
January Jones – She looks under dressed and I hate the shoes.
Jennifer Morrison – I like this much better than the lighter dress she wore.
Julianne Hough – Cute, but not quite right for her.
Kelly Osbourne – I used to think she dressed okay, but this year with the weird dresses and the gray hair, I can’t.
Kirsten Dunst – This is how Jaimie King should have styled her dress.
      Minka Kelly – Okay
Molly Sims – The Earth Mother look is not working for me.
Rachel Bilson – Cute. I wish Julianne was dressed more like this.
Rashida Jones – This is the best she has ever looked on the RC.
      Rose McGowan – Boring.

January Jones’ clunky orthopedic shoes should be burned. Kelly Osborne, I like you but that hair is…I just cant.

Somebody tell Kelly that gray hair only looks good on my mother. I’m 51, and I dye my hair its original color.

And- I see far more Marchesa that I dislike than I like.

      • Anonymous

I think gray hair looks best when someone has gone naturally grey. Dyed grey hair always looks fake.

I had an aunt who turned grey at 25 and kept it all her life. It gradually turned white when she reached her 70s. I never saw her not look spectacular, especially when it was silvery.

Why does Kelly Osbourne have gray hair? I somehow find it amusing that her mother wouldn’t be caught dead with her real gray hair, but Kelly goes for gray when presumably her real hair isn’t. Or maybe Kelly has dyed her hair so many different colors that it really is gray underneath. Like she’s leeched all the color out of her poor hair and gray is all it will do.

My preferred story is that she’s appearing in Disney’s Sword in the Stone on Broadway as Madame Mim.

    • Lulu Lafurge

I can’t believe you went so easy on most of these dresses. To me, most of them look foolish or dated. Maybe you’re both high. Or maybe I need to up my own meds.

The Valentino dresses would look great on Florence Welch.
What is up with Abigail Spencer’s hair and make up?  She is not as old as it is making her look.
I’m surprised you didn’t have a problem with Amber Heard’s dress choice.  Although GORGEOUS it does kind of match her skin and hair.  Also, that make up isn’t really doing her any favors.  She’s a beautiful girl!

    • Anonymous

January Jones looks way too casual for a black tie event! I give Rachel Bilson a pass because she is tiny and as a fellow shortie I try to get away with avoiding long dresses as much as possible and at least her short dress was frou frou enough that it could only be worn at a formal event. And her shoes, hair and make up are stunning.

Normally I’m so much more in favour of hair-up but I actually think Rashida’s dress would have looked better with her hair down. She does look lovely though.

Kelly Osbourne – is it me, or is her hair sort of an odd purplish color?
January Jones – great dress, but what is this pose?
Jamie King – gorgeous dress? I think not.
Brittany Snow – is that Brittany Snow?

Kelly’s hair is the latest rage — a kind of ombre grey. It’s disgusting.

Angela Lindvall (who?) I agree with TLo – great color, get rid of the bed spread dust ruffle on the bottom of the gown and let it flow: would be my favorite gown of the evening.

Julianne Hough is just sad in that color – she has such gorgeous eyes and figure, please please wear some color. Molly Sims: Disney  (preggers) Princess. In a good way. I thought she looked lovely. Rachel Bilson – giggled out loud when TLo wrote: no great shakes –that dress is MADE for shaking. She looked cute and comfortable and I loved the subtle wash of teal or perhaps seafoam color in it. Note to self: must get monitor adjusted. Rose McGowan- cannot overlook all the surgery, she had a lovely and unique face before all the work- now she’s no longer ‘Charming’ and I can hardly stand to look at her.

Reconstructive surgery doesn’t always look pretty.

Kirsten Dunst clearly didn’t get the memo about Valentino dresses and milkmaid braids. Thank god for that.

Molly Sims looks like she is trying to pull off the Galadriel, Lady of the Wood, look.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

Sorry but Jaime King’s dress looks like it was made from upholstery material.  Ick.  And Kirsten is Little House on the Runway, IMO.  Another ick.

UGH – KELLY OSBOURNE, FOR GOD’S SAKE, THAT HAIR! JUST QUIT IT ALREADY. **SHUDDER**

What the hell is going on with her these days? My mom’s sadly-outdated-but-still-stubbornly-frosted hair looks better than that!

      • Anonymous

I was about to write almost exactly the same thing: what is going on with her?
6 months, a year ago she seemed to almost always look just right.
        I don’t get it!

    • Anonymous

I don’t think Kelly Osbourne is taking risks. I think she’s just a young woman who doesn’t know what the hell she’s doing and is brave enough to try anything.
I mean– that hair? that dress?
It’s annoying that she’s on TV sitting in judgment of others’ fashion choices. She has no chops.

January Jones sure took a sharp turn toward mom-fashion. Her look is night and day different from before she had her baby.
