Stephane Rolland Spring 2012 Couture Collection

Posted on January 25, 2012

A favorite of Lady Gaga, Stephane Rolland sent a collection of eye-catching looks out on the runway, many of which seemed tailor-made for her. Starkly dramatic gowns (mostly) in shades of red, black, white and chartreuse, with body-altering flourishes, architectural details and gold accents throughout, these looks somehow manage the trick of looking classically elegant and trendy-modern at the same time. These are red carpet looks for the lady who doesn’t like to necessarily follow red carpet rules. Like we said, Gaga has a fondness for this house and she could rock almost anything here, but we could also see Tilda Swinton killing it in many of these looks. Some of the architecture gets a bit overdone, but we’ll take an overdone interesting dress over a boring old princess fantasy dress any day of the week.

There are several pieces here I would KILL to own.

    • Sam Corbett

For some reason the eye makeup is giving me a serious Olivia Wilde vibe on nearly all of these models. Hmm.

Love most of these, though. Tres dramatic!

    • http://twitter.com/jmurph3 Jaclyn Murphy

I would cut a bitch for that orange/red dress (look 2).

      • Anonymous

That would be me then. What are your thoughts on time-sharing that dress? ;)

    • Anonymous

I LOVE this collection! So dramatic and gorgeous!!!

    • Anonymous

Eye-popping in the best possible way.  I would love to see a lot of these on the red carpet.

The fourth one from the bottom, though.  All I can see is smoke curling up from her crotchal region.

      • Anonymous

The slit on that one is terrifying!

      • Anonymous

The slit on that one is terrifying!

      • Anonymous

Oh, yes!  Had the same shiver on the next look, b&w with a red blood-spout from somewhere secret.

    • Anonymous

Wow. Cate Blanchett could kick a few of these out of the park as well.

      • Anonymous

        You are so right.

      • Anonymous

        my thoughts exactly!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1043171034 Tadiana Walton Jones

In the 5th picture, I feel like the toilet paper roll fell inside the wall holder but the tissue is spilling out.

I kid because I love.  Well, most of it.

    • Anonymous

That fourth dress is just hilarious. Her pelvis is presenting an angelic iPhone.

      • Anonymous

ETA: I would also like to see either SWINTON or Angelina Jolie in the second-to-last gown.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4IM6TWHKNNTL2BAXHKFNEYR6CU Irene

I was thinking the third-to-last for Jolie… reminds me of her recent white/red dress, but far more fabulous.

          • http://twitter.com/OracleKath Kathrine Marlow

I was thinking the chartreuse grecian look with the slit up to her hoohah.

      • Anonymous

that is EXACTLY what i was about to type. You beat me to it!

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MNMVM2GPVUEIOJXBOSLCXKAW4U judy brown

Also: on her hip, the sixth dress is carrying extra dinner napkins.

          • Oze R.

If you are going to wear napkins in your skirt, better be lots of ar-chi-tec-tu-ral napkins. Love it.

      • Anonymous

Ok, yours is better.  I thought her skirt was a perfume bottle.

        • http://twitter.com/1carmelita 1carmelita

          That’s what I saw, too.

    • Anonymous

Awesome stuff.  And really minor edits would make these perfect for the mass market.  I’d say a winning collection!

    • Anonymous

i see a lot of Gaga in this… but also a lot of Rooney Mara! Especially that white one with the rectangular cut out at in the front? 5th from the top.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

SOOOO pretty! I can see Evan Rachel Wood in quite a few of these, too.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000060490093 Anita Freiler Palmer

That’s how Madonna should do gloves on the red carpet…

      • Anonymous

I thought those thumbless gloves were hilarious.

    • Anonymous

These are interesting and there are probably 4 people on the planet that are not models that could pull them off. You’ve named two.  I find myself wishing that some of the details were scaled back some as they overpower some of the stark gorgeousness of the dresses. I also think I may declare 2012 the year I am officially over giant platform shoes. When the size of a shoe eclipses the waist of a model (check out the starving waif in red wearing the cocktail napkins on her hip), they’re officially too large in my book. I long for a delicate strappy sandal, but that’s probably just me. Also, I lived through the 70s the first time and have suffered enough ankle damage already. Please fashion gods, end the platform.

      • MilaXX

Besides Gaga, I think Swinton, Blanchett, Zoe and maybe Evan Rachel Woods could pull off a few of these dresses.

        • Anonymous

I can see Jolie in the white gown (or is it a jumpsuit?) with the sorta cape and the gold fragments from crotch to neck

    • Anonymous

OMG, how gorgeous!  I loved the black and white dress with the red “rose”
Some of the dresses are definitely too architectural, but most are just to die for!

    • Anonymous

      LOVE

    • Anonymous

A few of these look as though the architectural element was tacked on at the last minute, but some of them are just KILLER!

The black/white/red, the chartreuse charmeuse, and the white gown in the 5th photo are to die for.

I’m not a fan of the hand-coverings, though.

      • Anonymous

The gloves look to me like someone dipped their fingers in latex.

        • Anonymous

Wonder if Madonna’s snatching them up.

      • Anonymous

I agree. And that black/white/red dress is just divine. *swoon* The loveliest “question mark” I’ve ever seen.

    • Anonymous

I love the concept as architecture and for the runway, but not sure how wearable most of these are. Gorgeous though. :)

    • Anonymous

I love the collar on the first look.  Would love to have a scaled down version for a wedding that I am attending.

    • Anonymous

Oh, I hope 90% of these make an appearance on a RC sometime soon. J’ADORE.

    • http://twitter.com/Goldielox73 Goldie

Most of these are absolutely gorgeous but the placement of that gold accent on a couple of them make the models look like giant perfume bottles.

      • Anonymous

Took the words right outta my mouth!

      • Anonymous

Took the words right outta my mouth!

    • Anonymous

Some of those pieces are spectacular.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

      Wow, this is art.  Exquisite.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1326120071 Gaby Ripoll

Fourth dress: It’s the new smartphone – with a push of a button, you’re in couture, with you’re own personal soundsystem so that you take the party with you!

But in all seriousness, I like most of these.

    • Anonymous

I feel like Olivia Wilde and Evan Rachel Wood could rock a few of these too. Love the gloves too!

    • MilaXX

First impression was “Please don’t let Madonna see these gloves.” I really like this collection. My favorites are the red dress with the square thingys and the black/white combo with the red swirl.

    • Anonymous

That black/white dress with the red “rose” on it – the one you used for the cover pic – is amazing. Someone better where that to the Met Gala!

      • Anonymous

Kruger or Karlie Kloss, yes please!!!  Or Fan Bing Bing…

    • Anonymous

Check out Yasmin Le Bon modeling a 110 pound dress at the end of the show – it’s painful to watch her walk, but when she poses it does make quite an impression.
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rgi4RiyI6hg

      • Anonymous

Looks shaky to me, like she’s about to topple over, and the expression on her face shows her discomfort.

        • Anonymous

But when she gets to the end of the runway and turns and DOESN’T FALL, that face shows the accomplishment too. It’s not a graceful walk by any means, but she got it done, by George! Rarely do I cheer in support of a model, but that was *hard work* with a great potential for failure/embarassment and she succeeded, so cheer I did.

    • Anonymous

Im digging the sculptural fabulosity with maybe an abstract floral thing happenig. My favorite is the fourth one, the calla lily gown.

    • http://twitter.com/TheRealSandraOh Sandra Oh

Makes me think of Leann Marshall.  Whatever happened to her?

    • http://twitter.com/herong Heron

GORGEOUS.  Although iPhone dress looks like iPhone (4th from top).

    • Lauren Maier

I’m getting a definitive “Princess Leia” vibe off 8, but all the others – WANT, especially the second to last one.  And those glove are awesome.  :D

    • Anonymous

Stunning! Some are beautifully WTF, but man, what a great collection!

      • Anonymous

They are so beautifully done that I even like the WTF ones!  Looking at them anyway.  It’s so imaginative and fresh–just what I always hope for and don’t get all that often.

        • Anonymous

Oh, I actually like the WTF ones too! Very refreshing and extremely well made.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

It was either, OMG that is fucking amazing, or OMG that was fucking terrible (second to last picture especially….who wants half a turtle neck on their evening gown??).  And I think we’re all thinking Leann Marshall here.

    • Anonymous

I like this collection. Dramatic but also very clean, which doesn’t always happen with these crazy designers.
The only one that I find disturbing the one in the 12th picture. The way that frouffy thing is coming out from under the slit in the dress, it kind of looks like her vagina is floating out from under the dress, much like a dialogue balloon in a cartoon. Not the best look for any girl.

    • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

How about JLo in that halter chartreuse number?

    • Anonymous

      love this collection

    • Joanna Schuth

3rd from the bottom made me gasp.

Some of these gowns remind me of perfume bottles, which is not a bad thing.

    • http://profiles.google.com/withano Loren S

The embellishment in the fourth dress looks like the back of an iPhone.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=599370579 René Herrera Domínguez

Basing your review on the supposition of whether Lady Gaga would like or wear these pieces is a little narrow minded. I think…

    • Anonymous

This is beautiful work!  I love the 3rd and 4th from the bottom especially–the ones with the hints of flowers, but not quite flowers. And that white skirt 3rd from the bottom–God, how gorgeous is that!  Also the top in the first photo.  But even the pieces I don’t love are interesting, and the structure is just amazing. Hate the models’ eye makeup and, of course, the horsey shoes.  But the clothes–Wow!

    • Anonymous

the second to last dress needs to have a sci-fi movie written around it.  KILLA!!!

    • Anonymous

I know people say this as a joke about gowns sometimes, but several of these dresses ACTUALLY look like perfume bottles to me – the white ones with the gold bits in mid-torso.

That said, it’s an aesthetically pleasing collection and I look forward to seeing which ones Lady Gaga picks.

    • Anonymous

I am all over that first look.  I also love the black gown with the white torso ruffle, but would need the slit adjusted so I could wear undies.

    • Anonymous

Olivia Wilde – you need the second chartreuse one! (among others)

    • Anonymous

      Gorgeous.

Were I a starlet I would totally try to wear one of these on the RC.  TLo would immediately put me in a “girl, that is NOT your dress” post, but I’d have fun trying!

    • R. L.

Really amazing, interesting work.  I hope we see these on a few celebs.  GaGa would, of course, rock any of them.

    • Anonymous

I could see JLo in a couple of the flowier ones, especially the chartreuses–or in the ones that have those giant flower-ruffles near the face. And the fifth one down, the white space-shift with the rectangular cutout, is breathtaking to me. I really want somebody to wear it, but who? Emma Stone, maybe? Can Hailee Steinfeld pull off this kind of minimalist shit, or is she not old enough for that yet?

Anyway, I really dig this collection.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

The first one looks like she was caught in a gust of wind and is about to take off like Sister Bertrille.

    • Anonymous

Love them all in a “totally not me but gorgeous anyway” way. Love that metal bangle belt and the metal inserts and the volumed edges on some of them.

    • Anonymous

      Superheroine flowers!

    • Anonymous

OMG  Love that red black and white dress.  I would love to be able to wear even 1 of these dresses

    • http://twitter.com/ryenerman rynerman

Every one of these would be completely preposterous on me, but I love them anyway.  Really interesting and well done.

    • Anonymous

But when she gets to the end of the runway and turns and DOESN’T FALL, that face shows the accomplishment too. It’s not a graceful walk by any means, but she got it done, by George! Rarely do I cheer in support of a supermodel, but that was *hard work* with a great potential for failure/embarassment and she succeeded, so cheer I did.
      And she’s 47? Holy cats!!

      • Anonymous

She is really age defying!   She looks absolutely amazing!  And I say that as someone who spent her early teen years totally in love with Simon!

And I love this collection.  I especially adore the black and white dress with the red swirl!  If only I had someplace to wear it!

      Vulvas everywhere.

    • Anonymous

Nice of them to incorporate an iPhone case into the 4th one.

    • Anonymous

The 3rd one is the one that calls out to Tilda the most.
The slit on the black on is TERRIFYING.
Love the belts and the clutches.

    • Anonymous

WOW. I love this collection. So dramatic but nothing is too overworked/outlandish. I die for that red-orange dress (look 2), I loved the architectural pleating in the white looks (3 and 4), the other red-orange dress (look 6) with that giant detail that looks like falling napkins and the amazing styling, chartreuse gowns (9 and 10), and that black/red/white look (13) with that detail that almost looks like smoke, even though normally i find black/red/white combination to be boring.

      Where are their eyebrows?

Is there some sort of eyebrow shortage I do not know of? If there is, I’m sure my father could supply the entire Paris Fashion Week with them, easily.

      Attack of the giant robo-women!

Also, GODDESSES IN SPAAAAAAACE!  I love the whole sci-fi vibe of it all.

    • glennethph

The red one with the squares is very Gaga. The one I want Tilda to wear is the B&W with the red swirl or the red one with the cape down the sleeve.  A cap(e) sleeve, as it were.

    • Anonymous

Please someone get the white with the midriff cutout for Rooney Mara. She’s a nominee–needs a big-girl dress!!!!

    • Anonymous

These are really cool, but I feel like too many of them are very basic classic dress shapes with a sculputral piece of foofaraw or a gimmick tacked on.  The corners of my mouth lifted, but my jaw did not drop.

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

Challenge: Take a classic shape and make it futuristic through the use of architectural embellishments.

I have a full on erection now… FAB!

I really love those gloves.  For the dresses, at first you think, “Huh, that’s odd.”  And then the more you look at them, the prettier they get.

    • http://tigergray.blogspot.com/ Tiger Gray

You work those vagina flowers, ladies.

    • http://www.facebook.com/TheChangling Michelle Lucas

      OMG. I LIVE!!!!

    • Anonymous

Looks like Madonna’s right on trend with the gloves…

    • Jill Roberts

I like the risk-taking here.  The sad part is that when designers, and the celebrities who wear them, go out of standard silhouettes, they get immediately get criticized and mocked by lame self-appointed fashionistas (no, I don’t mean you guys, T-Lo!).  Yes, some of those metal rectangles look like mail slots.  Clever observation.  But does that diminish the artistry or impact of the dress?  In this case, I don’t think so.  But the Fashion Police and their ilk will be all over it as soon as it hits the runway.  Do I really want Kelly Osbourne telling me what looks good?  Puh-leeze.

    • Lattis

Man, why was I born so short. I would love to wear clothes like this. They are gorgeous.

    • http://twitter.com/TigerLaverada TigerLaverada

Cool clothes, but I was incredibly distracted by the Blue Meanie eye makeup.

    • Anonymous

      Love these designs.

HOT. The vomiting abdomen dress however cracks me up

    • Anonymous

I love the red, black and white dress!  Not sold on the glove things, though.

    • spooki C

Love the black/white/red dress and the chartreuse one.

    • Allison Woods

You all need to step back so I can get to the dresses without hurting anyone.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1445460261 Courtney Bolt

The second look is perfection. I liked a few of the others, but that one is impeccable.

    • Susan Crawford

Now this is what a designer should be: these are original, wholly gorgeous, challenging and amazing pieces. I would strangle a beeyotch for the red, white and black confection, and if Tilda doesn’t grab one of the white dresses then Angelina should. GREAT collection.

    • Anonymous

There is a modern art vibe to these clothes.  That does not make them wearable.

    • Anonymous

i feel like i should like this better than i do. i do like some of it–the vaginal floral interrobangs & the dresses upon which they are affixed, for example. & the second chartreuse, the one w/ the 60s cardin-esque space gold. & the black ones arent bad–but i fall off the happiness highway, if you will, when i hit the multitude of hip napkins or the clavicle stairway.

i think i do like things that are unusual & are particularly well executed; otoh, when they become a canvas for the gluing & the sticking & the sewing & the molding of things upon things only to make them look different, well, i get either bored or exasperated. since a lot of this stuff is better than that, i’ve passed the straddle point & i guess i’m on the side of the fence w/ most of us here. i just wish i were leading part of the pack instead of strolling along somewhere in the distance.

i do like the barfing one, btw. the white one? i just dont like its shoulders. scapulae or abdomen but not both, i think.

in other news, for any- & everyone who not just hopes but expects to hear from me:
i am not trying to be a jerk, i’ve just spent the last week really sick. &, of course, he just told me they told him he has less than a year to live. is it true? is he making it up? not all of it, i dont think. but whether they said you have six months to live if you dont stop smoking & take care of yr health instead of pretending yr problems dont exist that i cant tell you. cos he wont tell me. & he wont let me call them to find out.

The one with the cell phone on her tummy is a bit… off. But the rest? The REST? WOW. I want someone at Mattel to copy these for Barbie so my girls can look fierce.

KILLER!!!!…definitely see Tilda werqing someof these!

I love the clothes, but the styling looks off on some of the models.

    • Anonymous

I love the odd elegance of the white gown with cap sleeves and gold mail slot on her tummy and the black gown with smoke wafting out of the slit.  The second chartreuse is pretty amazing too, looks like something Isis would wear to an awards show.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1077090078 Megan Sullivan

Fourth one looks like she’s using the dress as a shelf for her iPhone. Otherwise, love the looks.

    • marilyn

Gorgeous!  Innovative, simple, bold.  The dresses are perfect.  But what about those gloves?  They are not terribly noticeable, but are a funky accessory that is out of place with such elegant dresses.  (Madonna-note:  The gloves blend in with the clothes.  If you are going to do trucker gloves, do them right.)

    • Haley Parsley

loved most of this, but…did anyone else think the rectangular metal pieces at the waists of some of the dresses looked like the backs of ipod touches?

    • Anonymous

I love the gold halo belts on the suits.  This is really an interesting (in a good way) collection.

The language I am about to use is NSFW or kids or most people:

HOLY FUCKING SHIT.  These gowns are FUCKING PHENOMENAL.

      Okay, done.

I get that they are a little severe for a lot of people, but looks 1,2,2,12 are my favorites, and I would do some terrible things for the 13th look.  Like, unspeakably terrible. It’s my favorite favorite. It’s fantastic. My favorite thing I’ve seen this season.

    • SuYin Wong

      Gorgeous!
